Professor Vanderson is a great guy. He teaches you everything you need to know for the tests, and is really clear and easy to understand. He's a really nice guy- he really wants you to do well, so he makes himself available through office hours. Take his class!!!!
He's an ok teacher. He just graduated from school though so his teaching style is not very good, but he is very lenient gives lots of extra credit. Not a bad teacher over all, his only weakness is that his tests have really hard questions.
Totally reasonable. as easy as a chem class can get really hes the man. took him for 111 and 112
If you want a teacher that uses hard homework learnet assignments and then easy has easy test questions. Take him. He allows you to turn in late labs and homework up until the end of the semester, and he only takes off a few points. If chemistry is your subject, you dont even have to show up to the class.
Work hard. Show efforts. Ask questions. It's college; if you want cheap hacks, go somewhere else. I think he's a nice professor.
Professor Vanderson is the man, and he is very helpful when reviewing for exams. Just make sure you ask questions! He is more than happy to help. Hes an online gamer! Best Professor at NOVA
Mr. Vanderson is very clear and understanding. 5 tests, drops lowest one. Cumulative final that counts as 2 tests. 5 labs, 1 extra credit lab. 3-4 hours of online homework every week. Labs will be accepted late with a 20% penalty. Provides study guides and practice tests. Attendance is only required during labs. No make-up labs allowed.
I'm taking 112 and it's only now that I am appreciating how chill Prof. Vanderson is. His labs are graded on completion. While he is very by the book, he still is the most understanding chemistry teach at NVCC. I highly recommend his class. Show effort and you will do well. Easy tests, hard weekly hw that prepares you.
He is a GREAT! He didn't use power points, he wrote everything out on the board, so be prepared to take notes. He gave study guides about a week before the tests. He also cares a lot so don't be afraid to ask questions. Wish he taught 112, but he still helps me even though he's not my professor anymore. Goes through labs before you do them.
Professor Vanderson is not only an easy going person, but a very good professor. His exams were mostly based on the study guides, a lot of questions were taken from study guides. If you want to both learn chemistry and have a good grade, you know where to look for.
The professor is amazing, he makes you love chemistry. One of the best professor at NOVA. Very organized and helpful person, no powerpoint use in his class, all notes, which make the class fun. he is very knowledgeable person.
Never met a person who love chemistry as much as this professors does. He makes his class very entertaining and quizzes are only three questions easy as pie, no trickery and has practice test before you even take the test. He went over any questions that you did not understand in class and very helpful in his office hours.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. He doesn't teach off of any power points just based of off the textbook. He gives practice tests to study from which are exactly like the test. In Labs he's extremely relaxed and will take his time out to explain something to you if you don't understand it. He wants all of his students to pass.
I took Vanderson for CHEM 111 for lab, and I heard that he was a great lecture teacher as well, so I took his 112 lecture and lab. While he is fun, and amusing, he did not meet my expectations. It is very hard to get 1on1 help from him because he expects students to just know everything. He does not do PPTs, he writes on the board. MUST take notes.
Honestly, all you have to do is do the homework and the practice exams and you will pass. If you need extra help on something you can always go to his office hours, he is usually always available. I recommend taking Professor Vanderson for chm 111 and 112, there are no surprises on any of the exams.
I took professor Vanderson for Chemistry 111. His lectures are easy to follow, no surprise quizzes, and he gives extra credit for turning in the worksheets. He doesnt use power points; he writes all definitions and exercises on the whiteboard. Questions and problems in the exams are very similar to those in the worksheets and practice tests. I wo
Professor Vanderson is the most competent professor I have come across. He goes over concepts with extreme clarity. You will not even need to study for exams if you pay attention during the lectures. He does not use the book at all, so don't buy it. His exams are actually a little too easy, and he will give very similar practice exams.
best teacher ever, very flexible. help with any problems, always answer your question. not a stressed out guy, easy going. best professor, a real scientist. he always consider all possibility and different ways of doing things.
real scientist, good teacher, he answers all your questions
This guy is awesome. He writes everything on the whiteboard; just copy them down. If you know the worksheets you can earn yourself at least a low B. He's nice as hell, ask him any questions all day long lol! About Extra credit? like if I had a penny!
I took him over the summer, this guy is BRILLIANT, he truly simplifies it for the layman, GO TO CLASS. I got an A in lab, and a B in lecture. He provided study guides with plenty of practice. Exams the study guide. Lab was fun, we were a rowdy group, but was fun about it. Great guy, super polite, knows his stuff 10/10 do recommend.
Prof Vanderson is a wonderful and knowledgeable professor. His lectures are clear and contain ALL the information you need for the tests. Provides extra credit in the form of practice problem packets, which are a win-win because you get to practice whats on the test AND get extra credit for it! Gives practice exams, don't miss class, and take him!!
If you want to easily understand chemistry and get an easy A then take this professor for both chemistry 111 and 112
One of the most incredible, caring, easy-going, fun, intelligent, and and truly talented Teachers in NOVA. Professor Vanderson is clear in his grading criteria, his extra credits are very helpful, exams are straight forward, and lectures are fun. If you are interested in chemistry and you do your best he will make sure you succeed. Take him
Very nice & lectures are great, but he's a slow grader. The final's in 2 days, he's posted grades for 1 lab in 245 (we've had 10) and still waiting on the exam 3 to be graded. He said he'd post practice finals for both 241 and 245, but we're still waiting on those as well. Otherwise he's a great. Rated down strictly for untimely grades.
This man is the best professor I have ever had in the sciences! He does everything in his capacity to make sure we understand the material. His lectures are AMAZING. His kindness and willingness to devote extra time during office hours... What an amazing professor he was. It was an honor to learn chemistry from him. take him...
Love his lectures, he's a really nice guy who explains things very clearly. Very chill and while the content isn't the easiest, the tests followed in class examples/ practice tests very closely. Would recommend.
He is very clear in explaining step by step in really difficult problems. Although Chem is a tough course, I have to say this has been the best Chemistry professor I have ever taken. He is helpful! Do practice test worksheets before each exam, and you'll do well. Cheating is not tolerated in his class. He is very approachable for one on one help.
Takes FOREVER to grade tests and labs. And then EXTREMELY NITPICKY on the labs. Would not take again. Does not follow one text - you have to scratch and peck your way around several texts and the Internet to read up on theory. Very funny and nice but this class is all over the place - very disorganized.
A true gem. It was an honor to be his student. His way of teaching made me solve any kind of chem problems.
Professor Vanderson is truly one of the best instructors I've ever had. Such a real gem! I had him for both CHM 111 and CHM 112, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone. His lectures are interesting and his tests are easy as long as you do the worksheets and practice exams. He's the best! If you're reading this professor, THANK YOU!
Beyond best!!! Take him!!
The most brilliant, kind, caring, and wonderful teacher of NOVA. I wish all teachers were like him. I wish he also taught Physics 231 and 232.
A diamond in the ruff. Professor Vanderson is knowledgable +patient. He will answer ANY question. You will know what you're doing after this class. All the tools you need to succeed are there - extra credit, homework, and practice tests. Stay on top of it and you're solid. He is a great human being. Lectures and labs are always relaxed never rushed
He is an absolute gift and is the only reason I was able to learn chemistry. He makes chemistry much more understandable and straight forward than it could otherwise be. He is so funny in class, and is always willing to try to answer any question you have. He does work examples but be prepared to ask him to work unfamiliar concepts he might miss.
Prof. Vanderson is what every higher education teacher should strive for. He communicates a tough subject in the most accessible way; he is smart, helpful, and more than fair. You have to put in the work; like in any class, like in life. It's the first time I've felt successful in science/math and like I can actually do this - thank you so much!
Professor Vanderson is the kindest person you'll ever meet at NOVA. Gives really informative lectures; writes EVERYTHING down on the whiteboard, and answers ALL questions. Total Points: 640 (Sapling 80,Lab 160, Tests 400, EC 20-25). More than anything, professor vanderson taught me how being kind can go a long way in life.
Professor Vanderson is awesome! He knows what he is talking about and keeps you engaged during lecture. Very willing to help you.
Loved HIS CLASS! He is a great professor, teaching style is writing on board and going over problems. Labs weren't bad either. Replaces lowest test grade with final if you score higher. Study guides provided for exams. There were a lot of sapling HW's and quizzes. He's a great guy, always there for questions. Would definitely recommend him.
OMG Prof Vanderson is the best! He is a gifted lecturer, with an ability to make a challenging subject clear and understandable. No ppts, actually writes on the board! He is also a tremendously kind and compassionate human being, who wants to do whatever he can to see his students succeed. Provides study guides, and tons of extra credit. A+
He kinda fell apart throughout the semester. Fell behind early in the semester, second half of the semester was rushed. Didn't feel prepared for the last two exams, and he took weeks to grade.
Honestly, hes very smart and he tried to teach in a simple way, but he is one of the toughest grader I have seen so far. Plus, many students were complaining. I guarantee you that it will not worth it even if chemistry is your subject. Take other teachers and get a good grade and If u r curious about the subject, read the book. Keep your dreams.
Professor Vanderson is the best professor I've taken in years, he is dedicated, passionate, intelligent, helpful, and knows how to explain everything in baby steps if you need him to. He is incredible smart and is willing to go the extra mile if you struggle and ask him for help. He is always there even by emails. He is a phenomenal professor.
Professor Vanderson has an expansive understanding of Chemistry , and he does a phenomenal job of breaking down some serious chemistry concepts into easy-to-understand points. 4 exams, offers extra credit for completed practice problem packets; put in the effort and you will absolutely succeed. His class is a real gem in the NVCC Chem department!!!
Such a wonderful professor, is very clear on what he teaches and can explain in various ways if you're still confused, gives soo much extra credit, tests are exactly like the practice test. Im definitely taking him again for my next chem class!
BE PREPARED TO STAY IN CLASS FOR LIKE 5-10MIN MORE. I just feel like he is very unorganized when he is lecturing. A lot things don't match up to the Sapling online homework, so he would change the due dates often. Sometimes he forgets to teach us some parts and he tries to teach it before class ends (like literally 5mins before class ends).
Professor Vanderson was amazing. The way he runs his classes, it was a great way to take notes and the exams lean heavily on the reviews that he gives. He won't give you a perfect score if you mess up, but he'll be more than ready to discuss what you did wrong so you don't mess up again. Highly recommend.
Feel free to ask anything from homework during the class. Here's what you need if you're taking this class during pandemic: you'll need to buy Sapling for practice and weekly quizzes (around $50-$60) and Pivot for online labs (about $10-$15). You don't need to buy a textbook because it's available for free online. You'll have 3-4 exams in total.
This guy is a master at what he does. Translates complicated topics to layman's so well. Easily the best professor I've ever had. Goes the extra mile to show that he cares about his student's success. Understanding and reasonable. His online lectures after covid are just as good as his in-person lecture. Take his course, thank me later.
Super understanding professor, if you for some reason we're not able to get your hw done on time, then if you just let him know then he will extend the deadline for you. Offers ECs for every chapter, which will really bust your overall grade. The labs are really easy to do if you follow the steps.
Best Science Professor!!! He genuinely loves what he teaches, he lectures with enthusiasm in his voice. He's willing to help, you just need to ask for it. Also, he answers messages fast as well though remind app. There's around 5%ish extra credit, which is the Homework. Practice exams are like the real thing.
He is the kindest professor I ever had. Very caring and understanding!!
Stop searching, you have found the PERFECT CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR! coming from an anti-chem person, Vanderson has gotten me EXCITED TO TAKE ORG. CHEM! He will stop class just to answer your ques, SO ASK AWAY! He is one of the best teachers I've ever met and deserves a lot of recognition for his time & effort to make sure you understand everything
Super great guy and an excellent professor! Willing to work with you on due dates and always willing to meet outside of class hours to provide help. His tests are hard but fair and he gives great study guides. Lots of extra credit too and he makes it possible to really understand the material. Best chem prof I've had.
If you like organic chemistry, or dont, take this Proffesor! He gives a very clear syllabus, and A LOT of extra credit opportunities. Hes very thorough when going over PowerPoints, and does lots of examples, so make sure you attend class. Also, remember to do all the homework, its all extra credit. Hes very understanding, and helpful, take him!
This is the first Chemistry class I have enjoyed in my life. It's impossible to fail unless you arise every morning and decide "I'm going to do everything possible to fail Chemistry." The homework is organized in a way that you will always get the full mark. You cannot fail the quizzes. He's very patient and kind. Just take him to boost your GPA.
Very nice and knowledgeable. He makes lectures enjoyable and won't continue until everyone understands. He is reachable outside of class and gives extensions. He is laid back and can change test dates if needed. The only problem I had were the INNCESARRY long homeworks every weekend and that what he taught in class was basic and the hw 10x harder.
I was so scared to take ochem but he made it a breeze! Everything was easy to understand w/ him teaching. Hes v helpful and answers all and any questions. Exams were fair and he does extra credit to help your grade. My only issue was his time management wasnt great (go over lecture time push back material/exams) but its worth it! Take him!!!!
The professor is very nice and respectful, he's willing to help students and give extra credit for each chapter. It is just very hard to keep up with his lectures because he does ramble a lot and makes things a bit hard to understand by the way he explains things. he explains things in a very confusing way but means well. labs are a bit challenging
Best chem professor
John Vanderson is the best professor I have ever had at NOVA. He explains every concept in a clear, understandable way. He is very kind, always open to questions, and makes sure every student understands before moving on. My only issue is that he is a late grader for labs and often extends test dates because he didn't cover enough in the lectures.
Great lecturer with the ability to simplify complex topics. Many extra credit opportunities. Ample office hours. Only complaint is that he takes a while to grade labs.
Overall, Professor Vanderson is a nice person. That being said he was a very harsh grader and took forever to grade all the assignments. Do not overlook any detail because he will take off a lot of points. If you have any questions or confusion it is best to ask, especially for the lab reports.
This is the best professor and you should definitely take him. Lectures were long but he was always there to help answer questions. No textbook either! Homework isn't mandatory but counts as extra credit. He gives lots of opportunities for that. His practice exams are similar to the actual exams. He's a fun guy and made the class easy.
The best science teacher ive had, he makes the homeworks extra credit, and if you do all of them you get like half a letter grade for just completion. He explains everything really well and is nice, just make sure to put alot of time outside of class especially if your taking him in summer. But hes definetly a good teacher.
Professor Vanderson is so passionate about chemistry that it is contagious. I highly recommend
Hands down the best Proffessor I've had at NOVA. Proff. Vanderson is an excellent lecturer and provides you with all the material you need to succeed in his class. If you happen to miss a lecture, NO videos for the material are posted on canvas for you to learn on your time. Although, I wouldn't want to miss his lectures, he teaches VERY well.
I walked into professor Vanderson class with the hopes of barely passing. Chemistry is not my subject and I seriously struggled with this topic since I could last remember. I walked out of this class with an A and with passion and love for the subject. It was hard work, but he is very open to helping you and scheduling office hours
He's hands down the best prof I've ever had. He's an amazing individual who made me feel comforted, seen, and cared about during a devastating time in my life. Never in all my years of school since 1st grade have I encountered a teacher who clearly cared deeply about his students and the material he was teaching. If you struggle w/ chem, take him
Amazing Professor. Chemistry is a complex subject and he is the only teacher I've had that simplifies it and really helps you understand it well, also willing to meet in office hours. Extra credit is 4%. Exams are fair game, he gives us practice exams that really help. On top of being a caring professor, his lectures are amazing. 10/10.
The best chem teacher I've ever had from his lectures I was able to understand chemistry way better then prior teachers I've taken. 4% extra credit gives fair practice exams before the actual exams which really does help. Always willing to meet during office hours. The final exam replaces one exam grade which also helps a ton
Best. Professor. EVER. Take him for any and all chemistry. He is great at explaining difficult concepts and is always willing to help you with any questions. I was very scared to take OCHEM but he made it so easy. His exams are fair and he gives extra credit opportunities. Lab wasn't bad either.
He was born to teach. He just makes everything make sense so even though his class isn't the easiest A it's very satisfying because you will come out knowing that you learned so much and are equipped for higher-level chemistry courses.
Just a well rounded Professor. He has always put the students before himself whenever we needed help. Always willing to help with anything, however that doesn't mean not putting in effort. He has integrity and has a huge love for chemistry. He is knowledgeable and has a willingness to give extra time on assignments as appropriate. I trust him!
100% take him again, love his teaching style and always has time to help. His homework isnt a lot, his exams are super easy
HEAR ME OUT. I took a heavy load, 18 credits so chemistry could have just been more difficult than it could have been. Although, he spend every minute with me during office hours whenever I asked, and he is very clear on how to teach. He encourages discussion and random questions, trust me, ive asked them all. CARING AND DILIGENT. CHEM WAS FUN
The BEST to EVER do it. He's so kind and caring. Amples of office hours and is always available to answer questions via remind. Literally the coolest person ever. I used to hate chem, but now I've found a new love for it. TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
LOVED HIM. I would fail this class on purpose just to take him over and over again
Chill dude he can genuinely teach. Labs are easy and tests are the study guide he gives you. Very understanding as well when it comes to extensions.
Professor Vanderson if such an inspirational teacher of chemistry. Very willing to help outside of office hours. Very helpful and understanding. He knows how to teach simply.
Genuinely the best professor to teach chemistry. Loved him and miss that passion of teaching. What an amazing person.
Professor Vanderson is very knowledgable, his lectures were engaging and interesting and he gave tons of extra credit. Take him, he's genuinely one of the best professors at NOVA.
The professor just writes on the board and explains how to do things with shortcuts and amazing tips. he is very kind and gave a lot of personal extensions. The lectures are important to go to. Exams are similar to the practice, lots of studying materials available. 4% extra credit opportunities. He is very patient and explains everything
hes a very understanding prof and he makes lectures so easy to understand. He doesn't use any slides, he hand writes all of the lectures/notes. There is an extra credit assignment per each chapter and another extra credit you get (group study) before every exam. He does not drop any exams BUT he does replace your lowest grade with the final exam.
He is friendly, don't get me wrong. He grades VERY harshly. The exams are hard, but he creates a good study guide, but you HAVE to study or you will fail. He also does extra credit, but it's very hard. My issue is that he did not grade anything until two days before grades were due, and nitpicked everything. He graded exams quickly.
I came into 112 not knowing anything from 111. This guy made it so easy and fun. Professor Vanderson, made life peaceful. Labs were easy, Tests were easy. I asked stupid questions and he answered with no judgement. His exams are related directly to the home works and practice exams. Lots of extra credit. Very hard to fail imo.
I am a bio major and I have to take a lot of chemistry. Chemistry isn't my favorite, however professor Vanderson made it enjoyable. He is really knowledgeable and anyone can tell, he enjoys teaching this subject and doesn't only make it fun but makes it understandable. He offers extra credit and study guides that are similar to his exams.
super understand and lenient, easy labs, easy hw, test are also doable, he gives tons of EC and study guide are similar to tests. i have asked the dumpiest question, he answer with no judgement, dont be scared to reach out to him. he explain things in simple terms with alot of examples in his lecture. take him you wont regret.
TAKE HIM!!! Best science professor I've ever had. I hated CHM 111, but he made me love chemistry! Lectures are phenomenal, show up bc that's where you learn! Labs are easy, hw is not too bad, plus lots of extra credit. He explains things SO WELL, everything made sense when he talked! Provides helpful study guides for tests, not too hard. LOVE HIM!!
Good Prof, harsh grader + you won't know your grade/standing til the end of the semester. Learned a lot though, mostly just him grading things last minute ticked me off.
The way he teaches is amazing, he will help you understand ANY material you don't get or want to learn more about. It's impossible to fail this class. If you miss a lecture you have to rely on another classmate for notes (he doesn't use powerpoints). He gave stuffed animals, during exams, to have out on our desk for fun/some emotional support!
