all tests are in essay form and he does not grade easy.
John is demanding; take him if you want to learn!
Fair and not judgemental -- you are free to think anything, just be able to articulate your position. Best Prof. ever!
one word: explicate. difficult, but GOOD professor. WILL teach class like a university class. smart guy.
Great teacher. Will expect alot from you. YOu will love going to class
Extremely difficult. The man is very easily angered and will spend entire class periods yelling at the students. I hate going to the class and wish someone would have warned me to take someone else.
Great instructor!
Be prepared to think and write at university level. If you aren't a very good-great writer, you will be by the end, but requires a lot of work. Very worth it. Take him, prepared to be enlightened. He's also very intelligent, willing to help, passionate
In the middle quality teacher. Very well educated, he seems to bring in a fake but trying attorney complexity to himself which I find rather amusing and fake. The teacher finds that being strict scares students into thinking harder.
Nice how a total of 7 students remain in his class. You call that easy? I think not! I can't stand a man who thinks HE is always right and YOU are always wrong. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
John is hard...very challenging. Didn't enjoy the class at first, but I eventually realized why: He's the first teacher who didn't pamper the students!! Very smart. Very credible. Strict...yes, but I think thats just what the students at COC need!
Best teacher ever! Although I did not like him at first, once you get into the swing of his class and personality you will like it. Very challenging, but you learn a lot and actually enjoy it.
He's absolutely brilliant, intelligent, and amazing. Not to be corny, but he TRULY inspires me. He's a good speaker, but makes the most simple points seem terribly complex and uses big words all the time. It's hard to take notes cuz he's hard to follow.
Very interesting guy. He was always there to help me during office hours. Take it from me, base your essays on what he says; use the book only as additional info. Usually I had enough to write solely from all the info he dictated. Be rdy to work & learn.
This class is hard and the teacher very strict. I recommend only for serious students. You must read the book and be good at writing essays. John is a good teacher, but he will not take any BS from students. Are you up to the challenge?
I took almost all my history classes with him. He's a great teacher, he's always willingo to help you and he lets you re write essays if he knows that you need help. because of him i decided to take history and now i'm doing really good!he's hard, but nic
singles people out for no reason!expects too much!has a rediculously fake accent and i would not recomend him to anyone who is a first year student!he will scare you.be prepared to read A LOT.he thinks he's going to be lawyer!! fat chance buddy!
The professor singles people out for being unprepared. From day one he let the class know the difficulty involved. He has been fair by making allowances for his early semester absences. Sounds as if someone is bitter because they do not know what it me
very hard teacher, his notes suck, and you cant even understand what the hell hes talking about most of the time. you should only take the course if you can keep up with the work.
Very hard indeed if you do not read, which is the biggest problem in my class with Professor Varga because people are unprepared eventhough he tells us what to expect. Next week he is going to teach us how to write a paper and he has given us more than enough time to prepare. He is not to blame.
Very hard class, dont take if your a first year, its all based on test essay test and multiple choice that are not easy and you have to read soo much out of the huge book!
good teacher, but likes to challenge college students abilties such as coming to class on time and writing essays.
Varga is very very hard on grading! For the written exam, the highest grade was a 70%! He just speaks and you're suppose to take notes off of his lectures. He is very funny I'll give him that, but unless you're super studious, don't take him!
John is a hard teacher. Be prepared to read, pay attention in class, and ask questions. He is a tough but fair grader. He actually treats students like they are in college. I highly recommend him.
One of the best instructors I have had. His lectures are extremely informative and interesting. He expects you to think, write and behave at the university level. A great class to take if you are interested in majoring in the social sciences. I really looked forward to coming to class everyday.
Varga was one of the best professors Ive had, but he was also one of the hardest. Very fair. He gave everyone in my class 10% extra on the first test because he missed a few lectures. Tests are hard but do the readings and study hard and you should do fine.
Very hard! Not a teacher I would ever want again. He always tells the students in class how he act as if he is teaching at UCLA. Also he is looking for way too much out of a student! he leaves no room for you to work on any other homework. Notes are a pain too.
VERY, VERY hard grader. Interesting teacher, but hard to understand. I would NOT recommend him.
Nothing from the lecture is on the test...all from the book. Participate, laugh at his jokes, and come to class and you will pass. I learned a lot from the lectures and he is a nice guy.
I about had a panic attack after i went to his class for the first week! There is SOO much to read in a short amt. of time and the tests are extremely hard. There are 5 in all including the final and 2 of the tests are in essay form, the others are mult. choice, which aren't easy! You are truly on your own in this class...and there is no structure
Varga is by far my favorite teacher at COC. He is very challenging and wants his students to think. You WILL learn in his class so if your looking for ease I don't suggest his class. Do the reading and pay attention and you should be fine but keep up with the reading because there is alot. Just dont fall behind.
WARNING!!!!! this class is soooo hard unless you want to spend the whole semster reading, taking notes, writing essay tests(like 5 pages), a hard essay at home, never sleeping at night. then take this class, he is interesting and funny... but seriously you will be sacrificing taking 4 other classes and wanting a life... is it worth it?
I took this class during the summer. Oh my god! Don't do it! Hours of reading and studying REQUIRED to pass. He's funny and nice but I highly recommend taking someone else.
One of the best teacher at COC. He makes history interesting. A lot of work, prepare to read and write a whole lot. All the work is duable don't panic. Try to pay attention in class, he'll give you key points to write the essays try to stick to those key points and you are sure to get an A.
favorite teacher. Highly intelligent. If history is your major or you just really want to learn, take his class. Encourages you to think on your own. I got an A in the class but I studied every day for hours for each test. Take really copious notes...that was most helpful for me.

nothing he leactures on is on the test. very hard tests practiclly have to memorize the chapters. lecters for 2 hours, if its hard for you to stay focused dont take this class. encourages participation but if you answer the question wrong he practicly calls you stupid without acutally staying those words. i dont recomend unless your really serious.
Lectures all class peroid. Skips around alot, making him difficult to understand. Doesn't teach very chronologicaly.
Way too hard to understand... too many notes to take.. dont know what he wants on the tests.. its a horrible class good guy though

Great Teacher! I enjoyed his class. He is very deamnding, but if you work hard you will be rewarded. I would take him again.
A great person. Went above and beyond what is required of him as a history instructor. Truly dedicated to his profession.
The very best of the best in History instruction. Truly passionate about his work, this is a treat for history majors. Highlights the true concepts of history study, such as examining human nature, and looks beyond the textbook for examples.

John is by far the best instructor I have had at COC. His is such a good teacher and pushes his students to the best of their abilities. Don't get discouraged in his class. At first it can seem difficult but stick with it and you will do fine. He tells all the students to stick with the class even if you think you will fail. Trust him! Don't drop!
He was the hardest teacher i've had. He's the guy that edited the same history book he teaches. there is a lot of reading you have to do alone. Multiple choice tests are extremely tricky and difficult. get a new teacher right away before deadline.
Hard teacher, but very fair. He made copies of the example exams for us to study. It is a college course-it is not supposed to be a cake walk. He went over the exams with us and showed us how to study. The previous comment is so out of context because he is helpful, clear, demanding, fair, passionate, and very understanding. Great teacher.
This guy is a jerk. and his tests are hard and his grading is unfair.... i studied for 15 hours for one test and i still failed.....
Forget the other reviews, this guy gives you a quiz every day based soley on the reading. Don't expect to be taught the material until it is too late. He teaches you after you already fail the test. Congradulations you learned something, but because he didn't tell you it earlier you got an F.
Varga is totally fair. Since the quizzes come from the text he should be expected to repeat what we have already done on your own. The point of the class is address topics from various perspectives not to hand you the answer. By the way you spelled congratulations incorrectly;but i suppose that his fault.
Don't take this class if you want a free ride. Doesn't care what your parents do for a living, or what you think you are entitled to. Have to THINK to succeed in this class, will do anything to help you become a successful student
He is an amazing teacher. he expects you to work in his class just as he works. you will learn in this class, but only if you want to. i would recommend this teacher to anyone who would like to test their intellect. also very helpful if you ask for it. he has study guides available for assistance in the library.
Hands down, one of the best damn instructors to ever grace the halls of College of the Crayons. He's TOO good to work here, yet my experience in his class tells me that he's exactly the kind of person who would work here to help the students. We're lucky to have him. As for you ****s who knocked him, get a life.
very smart and energetic man. His teaching style is different but his lectures are interesting. An A is possible if you work hard.
Varga is a tough, tough teacher. But if you are very involved with the class and you try hard, then a good grade is easy to accomplish. But it is not learning for the sake of a grade, it is learning for the sake of learning. Good man, hard teacher.
THIS MAN THINKS HE IS GODS GIFT TO TEACHING! HE IS CONSTANTLY BRAGGING ABOUT HOW WELL HE DID ON HIS SATS AND HOW SMART HE IS! INTELLIGENT PEOPLE SHOULDNT HAVE TO TELL U HOW SMART THEY ARE! THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF QUIZZES AND THE BOOK WAS COMPLETELY USELESS! DROPPED THE CLASS AFTER THE 4TH WEEK!
This guy is by far the best teacher I have ever had! He is very tough, but if you stick it out, his class will be worth it. I think he is to good to teach at a Community College. He should be at Stanford or some other highly regarded University.
This man is a brilliant teacher. He may be tough when it comes to grading, but it is totally worth it to take this classes. He inspires students to do their best for the sake of learning. He challenges students to think on their own, and that alone is the mark of an awesome teacher. Oh yes, he is very funny! Two thumbs up!

Don't be intimidated by him! He is such a nice man, and his level of intelligence is amazing. He likes to give tests and quizzes frequently, but they are right out of the book and lectures. You will learn a lot and be very inspired.
Absolutly amazing. He kept my jaw on the floor. Makes you crave education. Very interesting teacher. But PAY ATTENTION!! He gives you the info. but you are responsible for taking it in and applying it.
Arrogant man, seems to know it all, and says he is related to Alexander Hamilton. Demands respect and gets pissed off if you don't know the answer wen he calls on you. expects you to read the chapter so that he can discuss it in class the next day. the only good thing is that he only gives you 1 essay (gives you the ?'s beforehand to research) and
Very hard teacher but very fair. Don't dislike him because he is an intelligent man. He knows what he is talking about and you cannot BS in this class. You need to prepare and study but he gives the essay question a month in advance, so preparation is easy. Demands too much of students? That's what being a student is about!!!!
I knew more about his life then History...tried to get help from him and nothing worked. Had to drop the class. I wasn't able to graduate because of him... Horrible teacher.
Excellent instructor who provides Instructor's guides and example exams for his students. Almost always provides a review of material previously covered in lecture. Exams cover material from text and lecture. Syllabus provides instructions on how to succeed as well as a preparation checklist. He was always available for help. Good guy.
tough class. everyone bombed the tests (there are 2). the final and midterm were tough- focused on material learned during lectures and in book. just for sticking around, i got a C after failing the tests. He's a very cool guy when he's not lecturing. take lots of notes!
Great guy, very fair.....show respect.....get respect...tests are a little hard.....but can be passed!
Sooooo hard! You must enjoy history and have a prior understanding of the subjects he is teaching...well..talking about. His lectures are fast paced and less than 40% of the tests are on the lecture topics.
Truly honorable professor. Very genuine and dedicated to students. Students think it's hard because they have to actually do work. Go figure, actually having to do that in college. He's not you're average COC professor. I suggest him if you're up for a challenge and truly want to learn. Great guy!
This man is quite the philosopher not history teacher. Also he didn't teach what catalog stated,i had pretty much learned a brief overview of 111 and 112 instead of 130.He's hard because he forces 6 essays in 1 hour and tests completely diff. than study guides.Have to learn everything yourself.
History 130 covered so much; if one read the catalog they would understand how the class is like covering 111 and 112 in one semester. Almost every exam was a take home exam in which we had a week to work on the questions. He went over an entire example exam with us to prepare for the final. He was very fair and very clear.
extremely hard tests.
very good teacher. He make history sound entertaining and he is very clear about how the class works. the only bad thing is that th blue book tests have to be incredibly accurate. I learned a lot of history in his 111 and 112 classes but he wants an incredable amount of detail. other than that the multiple choice tests are normal and easy.
The man will be fair, and if you attend class and do all your work, you will go no less than a C. If you like discussions and learning then this is the class to take.
This teacher is extremely difficult. If students work as hard as his do, they deserve higher grades than a "C". He is very demanding and not rewarding at all. He is very intelligent and has great principles for life, but he is impossible to please. Don't take him if you don't want your GPA to suffer.
J. Varga is doing what college proffesors are supposed be doing. That is teach you to think for yourself and not have someone else tell you what to think. The tests are hard and there is some reading. Not that much though. every chapter can be read in a little over and hour. If you want your life enriched then take his classes.
HARD HARD HARD! this class was he** doesnt teach well at all very confusing! i walked away from lectures not knowing anything new. pretty much a teach yourself class. tests are IMPOSSIBLE to do well on. studied for 15hrs for the final and still didnt get a good grade! nice guy but not a good teacher. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU ARE A HISTORY MAJOR!!!!!!
he's nice.. Seems like a good guy... But not so much a good teacher. The lectures were very hard to follow and everyone in the class did poorly on the tests. He IS a nice guy though,.. But nice doesn't cut it.
Had him several years ago
Interesting instructor. Hard grader, but very fair. He is very concerned about his students. His lectures are fast paced, but if you follow his syllabus instructions you should be fine. His class is for serious learners.
It depends on what your education goal is. If you just want to glide thru to get an AA then this class is not for you. If you are planning on going on to university and want to be well prepared than John's class is a perfect place to prepare.
It depends on what your education goal is. If you just want to glide thru to get an AA then this class is not for you. If you are planning on going on to university and want to be well prepared than John's class is a perfect place to prepare.
good guy. gives an outline before all of his lectures and follows it in order. tests are rather hard, but follow the material and read like you are supposed to and you will be fine. drops lowest test score and gives up to 100 points for participation and attendance. if you want to learn a lot, take him.
The classes consist of lecturing taking notes and tests. He is a hard teacher but only because he wants to actually prepare his students to be able to transfer. He's a great teacher and is able to capture attention the whole class.
good teacher that actually makes you think for a change. one of the best teachers at coc
Worst teacher ever. I am taking his class right now and it is horrible. No one understands what he is saying because he uses words people have never heard of. The tests are ridiciously hard. Half is T/F which is tricky and the other half is matching. Everyone is wrong when they say he is not that bad, he is terrible. I will never take him again.
Great teacher...learn how to spell ridiculous and maybe you will do well in the class. He gives the answers and expects students to pay attention and take their studies seriously.
I found this teacher to be very good at his subject. He definitely knows what he is talking about. However, I found his tests to be rediculously difficult. Half true/false and half mult. choice. If you want to pass his class, you'd better study HARD for his tests.
Horrible, horrible teacher. Tests are suppose to see if the student knows the material, not to trick the student and that is what he does. Highest grade on a test was a 67%, that says something. But I do have to say he is really helpful and a very smart man, just a horrible teacher. I HIGHLY recommend you don't take him.
i LOVED this teacher! he was extremely helpful and willing to help any student who asked for it. he'll explain things as many times as needed for anyone who doesnt understand the material. there was no homework only two essay tests. i recommend taking him!
Excellent instructor. I had him for an intersession and he was very helpful. You need to stick with his class in order to really understand what a great professor he is. He is challenging, but it is because he cares and wants students to succeed and make something of themselves.
DON'T DO IT! Anyone here who recommends Varga should just jump. The guy says words no one has ever heard of. Who has ever heard of 50 true/false question tests. I've yet to meet someone who says they passed his class. The guys a genius though. He knows a lot of useless facts and he is a nice guy but not worth letting your grade go down the drain.
I passed his class with flying colors. As long as you READ and pay attention you should be fine. If you want to learn history then take his class, if you just want a "grade" then don't bother. In fact, if a "grade" is all you want then you shouldn't bother with college.
this teacher uses too many big words it makes me wanna pull out a dictionary. my best advice for someone who wants to take his class is to not take it and avoid possilbly getting a bad grade. if ur a hard workin student then this is the class for u
I thought this professor was amazing!I got a A because I studied for it. If you want to skate through, don't even bother.
Overall: Challenging but with humor! Gives take home exams. one essay and the rest are scantrons. Listen and take down notes if you want to pass. Great teacher!!!
I think its amazing the amount of people at COC, who really think that school is about how easy it is to get a grade. WE ARE IN COLLEGE. In life, there is no "easy way out", so when someone tells you that you actually have to work hard in a class you freak out. Varga is tough, but he really makes you think. I am a history major now because of him.
John made sure each student got the most out of the material as possible. he not only uses the notes he prepares for us, he tells side stories, that allow us to gain more of an affinity for the material. if you want to bear down and be challenged, he is the best professor possible! dont bother if you are just looking for an easy way out.
Great guy don't get me wrong, I would NOT recommend taking his class unless you plan on being a history major or just really love history. He talks extremely fast and expect you to know everything he knows on the test. essay question is ridiculous for a beginning level history class and he's a pretty hard grader. Good luck
I dont know who is writing all of these nice comments about Varga. Do not be fooled. He is so so so hard. I was more confused about History after i left his class. I got a B and I really do not know how. If you take his class, GREAT! just do not take any other class at COC. He is very nice though and if you need help he is there to help you.
He is a nice guy, speaks quickly but will go on tangents about who knows what. I enjoyed his class, exams were essays. He is a very hard grader though. STUDY AND TAKE GOOD NOTES.
Varga was fantastic! His class was the only one of my academic classes I actually looked forward to going to every week. He's tough yes, his tests are essays (could never get higher than a B), but he makes the class very entertaining, and he's available for you to ask questions. It IS a college class though so just be ready to work and you'll be ok
Professor Varga is very knowledgeable and passionate about history, that said I was very disappointed when he deceived the class by assigning a "mandatory" extra credit project, then informing us after we turned it in that it was in fact our test! When you're a professor honesty is the best policy!
Honestly, he's a cool guy, pretty funny and expects a lot from his students. The only problem with that is for all that students were expected to provide, little was done on his part for us to meet his goals. If outlines were given, they were unclear, the way notes were gone over was a mess. Hard grader. Difficult to get a hold of.
Best teacher i've ever had. Luckily for me he was my first experience @ the college level. He's what a class should be, i got my grade and i can honestly hold it as an achievement for myself because thats what it feels like, his class is so ****ing hard but that's what its all about. It pays off, no matter who you are this class will benefit you.
Varga rocks. This class was really good, I took it over summer (5 weeks) and as long as you listen to the lectures and take notes the tests are great. He drops the lowest test.. His opinions and tangents are great, but my only complaint is that sometimes they detract from the lecture time.
What a great proffesor. Very tough class. He lectures for the whole class period. The lectures are brutal but are amazing. Tests are half essay and half multiple choice. If you want an easy class, DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you want to learn something, take his class. I am not the best student, but I worked hard and passed wit a B+!!!
Good Luck. This isint an easy class but its not impossible to pass, you just have to pay attention and most importantly read everything in the assigned chapters. His tests are made to see if you really read everything and not just skimmed through the text. His lectures are really good on the other hand, just try to avoid missing class.
I took him during winter session and I got a B. He made the test take home for us, but it was still very challenging. Nonethless, I learned a lot and everyday I took home 6pgs worth of notes. Good luck.
Mr. Varga is a great teacher. He really knows his subject! And he doesn't assign homework. However, you must read and study for his tests. They are not super simple, especially if you haven't read the textbook. His lectures are truly helpful. He is really a wonderful educator!
he was the best teacher I ever had. I learned a lot in this class. You will know what he wants, HE SAYS what he wants. You do it, you get a min. B! Very very nice. I would take any class with him in a heart bit:)
Phenomenal teacher, one of the best I've ever had. Highly intelligent absolutely hilarious easy class 4 tests an that's it fairly easy grading. Defiantly can see where students may not agree with him on certain points of view but a great teacher
I love this guy. This is the second time i took him. He tries to scare people away the first week with the essay tests, but the class ends up super easy. He is honestly one of the smartest people i have ever met, but if you have trouble comprehending advanced English, maybe not right for you.
Varga is an awesome professor. He is very educated and he makes history interesting. I would definitely recommend taking him. If you put in a decent amount of effort an A is definitely attainable. He also brings up current social issues and gives thoughtful and interesting insight. If you are a history major you have to take him!
Very well spoken teacher. THE BOOK is only needed for key terms and the take home exams. I would recomend borrowing it from a friend or sharing a book. The test are challenging but study THE NOTES and you will do just fine. Be sure to take very ORGANIZED and DETAILED notes so study time wont be stressful.
He is a good teacher. He wants most students get passing score upper than "C". If you prepare to read chapter before test, you'd be fine.Nice teacher to everyone.
expects way too much from his students he talks to the class as if he's above everyone else & all his tests are in essays and you have to write a ridiculous amount of information. im a good student and i got an F and a D on two of the tests & i studied so hard for them. he requires you to memorize like 10 ID's that must be written 4 pages in length
Do not take this teacher if you have trouble with essay tests! This was the first class ever that I had to study my butt off for and still would fail the tests. Had to drop it in the middle of the semester to avoid failing. He expects way too much from his students for a community college class. I would never take him again!!!
He had high expectations and the tests were extremely hard no matter how much I studied.I got an F and D on the beginning tests because I didn't write enough information (and I wrote alot...). If you want to pass than you will need to study your butt off and somehow have an amazing memory of each detail that was talked about in the book and class.
Difficult, not very clear. He goes on and on and on with rants, and misses parts of what he is supposed to lecture. Gives minimal time on large tests. DO NOT take this professor. not professional
This professor is great. He is clear, provided outlines, covered material, gave us two exams to take home, a final exam prep that was exactly same as the final exam itself. He discusses the material and also larger issues related to the material. He is funny, challenging, and hi expectations.
Great teacher. Come to class everyday, take detailed and organized notes (it's best to keep them in an outline form for help with essays). His lectures go till the end of class but are filled with interesting info. My essay grades were average because he grades spelling and im dyslexic but i got a B in the class. Make sure you take time on the fina
I thought he was interesting, especially when he went off about "college of the crayons" and what the significance of life was. He can get mad easily. Didn't use text book too much. STUDY FOR TEST. I usually got a C or B on them. THEY ARE ESSAYS!!(except for the final which is nice) I thought he was cool, earned myself a B and was happy!
There is lots of writing in this class. All tests except for the final are in-class essays. There are specific things he is looking for. I did not do as well as I expected. One thing that bothered me was his fancy pronunciations of countries. All class was lectures. If you study you will do fine.
If you do not want to fail this class you must be ready to write 7 to 8 pages for the exams!! I missed 1 lecture, took notes, sat at the front of the class and I still could not manage to get a "C"!! He outlines but doesn't stick to it, seems a bit 'machista' which didn't bother me (Lol) but I could see the other girls reactions. knowledgeable.
Varga was great! He gives clean lectures which are easy to take notes on (which he outlines on the board). If you take good notes while paying attention to his lectures you wont have to read the book! He doesn't assign Homework! His tests are bluebook essays which if you memorize your notes you will do just fine! He rambles but LOVED the guy. Funny
I took History 111&112 with him. Tons of writing in this class! But he gives great notes and knows what he's talking about. Just show respect in class and he'll remain awesome. Sometimes he goes off on strange tangents completely unrelated to class, but they're usually hilarious and a good break during lectures.
John Varga was a GREAT teacher, he makes the class really interesting. He's very thorough in his lectures, writes tons of stuff on the board for you too. Make sure you read & TAKE NOTES!! You have 4 essays tests, he gives you questions to choose for the topics and you will write ALOT, so study!
Awesome. He is an amazing professor because he wants us to learn the material so we understand ourselves better. He lectures with such passion and knowledge. His tests are fair. He gives you every opportunity to succeed. If you don't it is your fault. I would take a class with him again in a heartbeat. I never liked history before I had his class!
All he does is lecture the entire class. Would of been better if he got the class involved. I wouldn't recommend him at all.
He's hard. Have to write a 4-6 pages essay plus a scantron test.. It's just way too much. Don't take him...this class is boring and you just sit there and listm to him talk and talk.
Tests were in essay format but he gave a study guide as to exactly what he was going to make you write about. Final was the easiest thing in my life. Gives you the answers the class before basically. Good teacher. Really liked him in the end.
Great teacher. He is really knowledgeable if your get to pick his brain consider yourself lucky . He expands on the topics you learn in class and quotes danish writers and thinkers a journalism majors dream
he repeats things sometimes and that means its on the test. You have 4 tests, and a Final. Lowest test will be dropped. All 4 tests are 30 multiple choice and a 6 page essay. for the final 100 multiple choice but no essay and he gives study guide that turns out to be the test! and you can use it when taking the test! so do the study guide for final
For summer, he gave us 4 test and 1 final essay. For the 4 test are multiple choice with each of them 100 questions. He will drop the lowest score. For the final essay he gave us a guide lines. So READ the book, it will help a lot.good luck guys
Great professor, favorite class. Gives very detailed notes (although a lot of it won't be on his tests). He doesn't follow the textbook very much but you will want to go through it yourself. Very clear and helpful, awesome personality.
Probably the hardest teacher ive had all year. I got an F in his class but i think he is a wonderful professor. His lectures were really interesting and i loved going to his class. i love the way he speaks, he is not afraid to say what is on his mind. Take him if you want a CHALLENGE!!
I found Varga very difficult. I made flashcards of my notes and only got about 5 questions relating to what he talked about in class. Most of the test contained things I had never heard about. There is a lot of information he expects you to know for the test but when it comes to the written and essay portion most of the information will be useless
SUPER HARD. The notes that you take in class are almost completely useless for the tests unless you actually understand what he is talking about. Goes off topic a lot. Says he is willing to help but its pointless. You MUST read the book. Expects you to know everything for the tests which are all essay questions. Good luck!
WORST HISTORY TEACHER I'VE TAKEN. DO NOT TAKE HIM. SAVE YOURSELF.
He is a great guy don't get me wrong very chill and kind but honestly I don't recommend his class too difficult notes are useless expects you to know the book very tough grader.
Great teacher! Gives a lot of fun historical facts that aren't found or widely known. Tough grader, but expects to have college-level writing skills and grades so. He expects a lot from you and is very clear about expectations.
Worst teacher I have ever come across. I don't know how he is a teacher. He is more concerned about grammar and argumentation rather then the students receptiveness on learning the text.
Very poor teacher. Should not be teaching a college level course. He is unclear with his directions and even more so with his grading. The worst online class experience I have ever had.
Toughest professor I have ever had. If you have the choice, do not take him.
Very tough and demanding professor, but he is very fair with his grading and helps you out by dropping the grade of prior assignments.
This professor really is something else, I am a history major and this guy definitely contradicts his "hard-working" doctrine. If he really wants to teach, he should develop a test which is much more comprehensive and open-minded to his students' interpretation of History not some lazy copied/paste 100-question test straight from textbook. Avoid.
At first difficult. But he made the class one in which people had to read the text to get basic undertdanding and then assigned four papers on a variety topics in which we had to interpret a important hsiotircal issue. The papers were tough, but he makes people better writers whether they are history majors or not.
Many people complain about the difficulty of this class, but the truth is it's probably one of the only classes comparable to a UC course. He provides an incredible amount of resources. I transferred to a difficult school in the UC system and wish all my classes had the same level of help he gives.
Loved this class! John is so awesome and passionate about what he does and is so knowledgable about history. His class isn't the easiest, but if you do what he asked and in a timely manner, you will be totally fine! He is completely willing to help you, as well. HIGHLY recommend taking any of his classes.
Professor Varga is a great person, but not the class you want to take if you are looking for a good grade. I am an A student and got D's on all his tests. He does not teach on what the test is on and is a horrible communicator. I had at least a few breakdowns thinking I missed a due date that was unclear. Very passionate, but wouldn't recommend.
I was wait listed,I talked to him and he said to just keep showing until spot opened. He know his stuff but he talked A LOT (at least 20 mins a class) about how proud he is to 14th generation Mexican. No body cares. I asked him after the 3rd class if anything opened up and he told me its not his job to drop people if they didnt show up. Just rude.
The professor was more concerned with my grammar than the essay itself. He got upset when you used 2 different fonts (which I did by mistake). The tests were impossible to study for and very difficult. He is a very hard grader of essays. Avoid this teacher.
This professor was one of a kind. HE tested my ability as a student. He instilled most of the information that would be on the tests within the lecture periods, which is more effort than some teachers put in such as professor Pennington, who assumes their students will never need her assistants. Anyways, Varga is by far the best choice.
Worst class i have ever taken! the structure was very easy to follow and he did a good job of getting his students to learn the material, but the essays were ridiculous. i could not understand what he was asking of us at all and he seems to care much more about grammar and other essay structure than of the topic itself. DO NOT TAKE
He isn't easy, but he isn't impossible! If you send him a copy of your essay, he will happily go over it with you and help out! His lectures are very interesting and fun to learn about. His tests are a little hard, but a majority of your grade is in your essays. This isn't high school anymore, people need to learn that a teacher won't baby you.
seriously, the worst teacher. Great guy, bad teacher. If you miss a single class, you're pretty much screwed. You definitely have to read the book. He writes the minimum on the board and just keeps. on. talking. and he repeats things constantly, but that didn't help me remember anything any better. I think the test material is right from the book.
This professor is probably the worst i have had in 6 semesters at COC. Self centered, unclear instructions, interested more in grammar than actual content and flow of papers. DO NOT TAKE HIM, BY ALL MEANS DO NOT
Varga has a passion for the subject which helped me stay into it however every class is lecture start to finish so take notes. the essays are what killed me, he was unclear on what he wanted and was the hardest essay grader I've had. and his comments were so poorly written i had no idea how to fix it or what he wanted. good teacher, heavy workload
DO NOT TAKE JOHN VARGA. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM!! I am saving you the F you are going to receive if you take this class. I read all the warnings on rate my professor and did not listen and I indeed failed.. he does not teach instead he goes off on tangents about whatever he feels like, he grades his essays like a nazi. HE WANTS YOU TO FAIL
I didn't have a problem in Varga's class, I got an A, but then again, I am a history major. Anyhow, this guy is just not a good professor. Does not engage the students in the material at all- goes on weird, unrelated tangents that nobody cares about. Straight up lecture- no powerpoints or videos or anything. Could not wait for class to end.
His lectures are long, but most days he spends his time talking about his family rather than history. There are 4 tests and 3 papers. The tests aren't too bad because he gives you all the possible questions, but it is a lot of information to take in especially since he hardly teaches. The papers are extremely unclear as to what he wants.
I was a new student and took his Latin American History class. Great professor respects people views and opinions, funny, and overall a great professor. If you were confused about something, just ask and he'll help clarify. Contrary to some of these reviews, I recommend this professor if you need to or just want to take a history classes.
Easy class, too many students think writing in history does not matter. These students will fail when they transfer. John Varga's class is not difficult, he only requires one book for an entire semester. Apparently this is too difficult for most students.
The essays where confusing
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! IF YOU WANT TO PASS THE CLASS HE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER. GRADES PAPERS AND ASSIGNMENTS POORLY. HE IS NEVER CLEAR ON WHAT HE WANTS AND JUST GIVES LOW SCORES WITHOUT EXPLAINING WHAT YOU DID WRONG. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM I'M WARNING YOU!
He was a great teacher! You would have to try to fail his class. Just study the study guides he puts up before the tests and you'll pass the tests. Papers are a little tough graded but its not that hard some people just don't know how to write papers apparently. I definitely recommend taking him!
All you have to do is memorize questions that are given to you before each exam. Not much studying involved! Essays were confusing. He only took like a minute to explain them. This class was such a joke. I would not recommend this class if you plan on attending a university.
WARNING! Probably the worst professor I have ever had. He does get confusing at times and is tough grader. Any little thing Vargas will pick at. I could not stand his class.
Not very clear on assignment instructions, extremely tough grader, no feedback at all to improve, does not really communicate at all with class. Would not recommend this professor to anyone. Did not feel like he showed any interest in teaching this class.
Not at all fair to his students. Very tough grader and horrible personality. Will not work with you if you have a problem. Avoid at all costs!
His lectures are long and confusing and essays are unclear.
I took Varga unaware of what to expect, and it was a shock. His quizzes and tests aren't hard if you really study ALL the material he gives you. Which is the videos (they are all 30+ to an hour do not watch these last minute!) not only the book. He is an extreme stickler for grammar will straight give you zeroes for the smallest mistakes.
I took his class for Chicano studies, and honestly i enjoyed his class so much! Not an easy A, but as long as you apply yourself, you will be fine. I learned so much from his lectures and he really gets into them. He is very helpful and very respected. Grade is mostly based on essays. I would definitely recommend his class!
Only exams no HW/Quizzes. All exams are essay & short answer. Read the book, listen in lectures to pull small details which he'll expect for the exam. He goes on a tangent OFTEN, makes you feel like the lectures are pointless. Format of class is pure lecture, hardly ever any slides. You'll have to prove a point on exams & use historical evidence.
Not the easiest grader ever, but he gives everyone plenty of opportunity to prepare; practically gives you the test questions in advance. Expect long winded lectures with little room for class discussion or activities. He's a little intimidating sometimes but he seems to genuinely care about his students' success.
Took his course over fall. A tough class, very unclear of what you need to do & very picky on grading discussions. Makes you watch videos & quote them in discussions. Each quiz is 25 multiple choice questions & are super hard. Three 100point papers were due. Overall a really rough class but if you put hard work into it you'll end with a good grade.
As of fall 15- Lectures are long and don't necessarily include textbook information. No homework, five tests make up your grade. Tests include information not included in the lectures. Spent a bit almost every class getting off track talking about his life instead of the subject.
Seems like a really nice guy, will help if you ask. He does go off on tangents that have nothing to do with what he's teaching, but they're often entertaining. Five tests, all writing, drops your lowest score. Grades pretty easy on the writing, but expect to write a lot and back it up with evidence. Book reads easy but expect to read.
He will give you a 0 if he does not like what you wrote in your discussion post. I am an A student and am currently struggling in this class because of this. I don't even think he reads my posts and gives me a 0 anyways because his notes sometimes say that I didn't quote the textbook when I clearly did. Won't help you at all. Don't take his class.
Dude is super hard. He talks a lot and doesn't help out as much and goes on tangents. But as long as you do the work you might pass
very tough, sets you up for failure. I am a great student and have never done poorly, but I am failing the class. Students are dropping like flies from the online course. please save your efforts and take another teacher. He clearly doesn't care.
Save yourself the headache & take another teacher. He doesn't care about his students passing. I'm a straight A student & I'm failing because he gives 0's for "not quoting the book" when you clearly did. He also only gives you 30min for a 25 question test, which I don't think is enough. It's usually 2min per question. He's unclear about what wants.
Doesn't care about his students and obviously dreads his job. One would think he intentionally sets up his students for failure in order for them to understand that sometimes they are going to just lose in life no matter how hard they try. Like others said, enroll with another professor. Would not recommend.
Wouldn't recommend taking a class with this professor you can do exactly what he asks for in his syllabus and he will grade you based off of his own personnel opinion. States he grades based off of what the syllabus entails, and you can include everything he asks for in ur discussion and still deduct points based on his opinion. Very unfair.
I was skeptical of taking one of John Vargas classes from reading previous comments about him being a mean/hard teacher, hes actually quite amazing. He gives amazing feedback and is always available to answer any questions. As long as you read your weekly chapters and complete your assignments, passing the class is not an issue. Hes great!
The professor lectures all class long without visual aid. Struggled a lot because all the exams were timed, hand written essays, expect a lot of exam preparation before class plus the textbook reading every day. His grading standards are not straight forward, and although I know what the exam will be on, I often didn't understand how it was graded.
This class was challenging, but definitely not difficult if you put in the time to study and apply yourself when writing the discussion posts. Read the syllabus carefully, do the work, and you'll get an A for sure. Don't pay attention to the people that claim Varga is a difficult grader (not true). This is college, right?
Took history 112 online and best class ever! No tests no final just simply discussion posts online chapter quizzes and an easy 2 page easy, this class was a breeze just read the weekly chapter take quizz and post discussion and you will pass with a high grade it is the best easiest history class I have ever taken bless this proff !!!!!
He really is the hardest history teacher that I've had but his lectures made me interested and I know he goes off on tangents all the time but he has definitely been the best teacher at giving you a good idea on how the time period was. Its easy to pass but dont expect an A.
Picks apart every sentence and docks points left and right. When told to write on how you interpret something, he will doc points if he views the subject differently than you. You will feel set up for failure because you are expected to know as much as him about history. Never any positive feedback, all negative. Impossible to get a perfect grade.
Not the easiest class I have ever taken, but definitely worth taking. He is a tough grader at first, but once he gets to know you he lightens up. He cares and wants you to succeed in not only his class but also in life. His tests are essay questions, but they are exactly what he lectures in class. Go to class, take good notes, and participate.
Definitely not the easiest class, quizzes were difficult, essays were also not very easy but as long as you do what he requires you will do fine. Very fair professor, hard to find someone like him these days. Very fair grader and makes it very clear what he wants from you. Im glad I took his class.
Took the online version of History 112, and you will need to read the book. Participation in weekly discussions is mandatory, follow the outline given in the syllabus it's very clear with his expectations. He is great with feedback, he is very strict on the grading of papers. Overall just do the work, the class is not hard if you do the reading.
Professor Varga is really passionate and good with history. However, his class is challenging. His tests are written essay forms, but he picks the answers apart. There are only two questions but he expects a long long answer and he picks apart every sentence. Since he's so good with history he is really particular. A very challenging class.
BEWARE! Had 4.0, 60 unites prior, GPA Ruined. Harsh Grader, worst yet. Tests are trick questions. Got answers from book, still wrong. Don't ask questions or contest mis-gradings, angers him. Online class was inflexible. It's not worth it. Take another class. Professor is poison! Worst experience in my entire academic life. RUN, RUN, RUN!!!!!!
Although I found the multiple choice tests a little tricky, I enjoyed the curriculum. Professor Varga's grading criteria is clear, as are his expectations. Plan on doing all required reading and don't stick to minimum requirements in this class.
He is an awesome professor! There is a lot of reading but tyen again what history class doesnt. Just stay on top of it and respond to the discussions on time and reply. If you email him he will respond within 24 hours usually less. There is only one essay and he gives you two months to write it. He is a tough grader. Overall, I would recommend it.
This man is what you want out of an educator and a mentor, he talks all class about the days topics written on the board and genuinely knows the information and knows what hes talking about. Tests are hard and essay format but pay attention and tell him what you know and you will pass. Even him off tangent I still learned something important.
I would strongly recommend that you read ahead to prepare for the lectures. He provided lecture guides that helped with taking notes and preparing a framework to touch upon all the topics he expected during the tests. The tests were essay questions to analyze certain events or time periods. He treats students as adults and provides plenty of help.
His online isn't that bad but can be time consuming. There are two discussion boards & two-four quizzes per week. Make sure to go over the min word count and CORRECTLY answer the board. Make a study group for quizzes, they can be really hard. Overall, hes a really good teacher, and he really cares. He answered all my emails and was very helpful.
I took his online course for history. He is very clear with how the assignments are and how they should be done. The whole month was exactly how he described it. You will need to read and make time to watch the videos he assigns for the quizzes. In overall his class wasnt the hardest, but you cant slack off. I enjoyed and recommend him.
I tried so hard in this class but the quizzes are not passable. All the questions are based on choosing the best right answer out of all the right answers, so its basically his opinion. I don't see the point in making the class so difficult when its for general ed. Don't take it lol
Im not sure why Varga has so many poor reviews. I took him for both Hist 111 and 112 (online). As long as you follow his syllabus for answering the discussion questions you will be fine. There is no final, only one essay that can be no longer than 750 words. He also drops your 3 lowest grades. There is a lot of reading though.
I've had him for two classes. the only times I've gotten less than 80 percent on a exam is when i did not follow the study guide. he is a great guy that treats you like an adult. he will not baby you but will help you if you do not understand something. he may go off on a tangent or two but it is mainly because he is passionate about his beliefs
He talks for the ENTIRE 2 hours. No slide shows, no questions, nothing to keep you interested or awake. Very monotone. If you participate and ask questions youll be his favorite. Extremely tough grader, literally no mercy. No extra credit doesnt believe in it
One of the best professors Ive but had in years.
This class was truly great and rewarding in the end. He lays it out plainly, so pay attention to the syllabus! He is a tough grader but gives excellent feedback to improve on every assignment. This isnt an easy class, you will have to read a lot, and take plenty of notes but if you put in the work its great. Dont let some reviews discourage you!
Online class. Must read everything in the chapter, quizzes are detailed but each of them can be repeated for better grade. Overall good class, fair grading
Exorbitant workload for 5 wk class: Two 500 word papers; Two 200 word posts ea. w/ 150 word reply per week (both incl. txtbk and video citing req's); Careful/critical reading of 2-3 chptrs per week w/ 2 quiz per chptr. Extremely challenging. Organize well. You will find what you're made of. He responds very quickly to questions and is helpful.
So overall the class was a lot of information He uses the textbook a lot and his tests are in essay format so study groups and studying is definitely needed. Its hard to figure out what you need for the exam but overall he is an amazing professor.
Prof. Varga was good. I liked the fact that we knew from day one what were going to be graded on. The class was tough workload-wise, meaning that there was a lot of reading to be done. As long as you keep up with reading and assignments, you should be okay.
Took Professor Varga online. We basically did 2 discussion boards per week along with 2 quiz's up to 4(Only if u do bad on one of them). 2 main papers one that's 500 words and the other 2000 words. No EC. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE and you should be good. His grading criteria is very easy to understand. I would recommend to keep track of scores.
Dont take this professor. He has an attitude problem and will screw you over on grading of your tests and papers. Avoid this teacher/class and pick another teacher instead. Failed me for no reason and gave tests that were 100 questions and an essay question. This is the first and only class I received an F in
being an online course you have lots of discussion boards, which is no big deal but when the discussion board prompt goes along with NOTHING in the chapter we're supposed to quote from it makes everything a lot more difficult. he marks down for the stupidest things and gives HORRIBLE - I mean THE WORST feedback of any professor I have ever had!
I took this class and then dropped it towards the very end because of how difficult it was. He says he reaches by the syllabus but doesnt and docks off points for the stupidest things such as forgetting to capitalize a word . In discussions he asks for your opinion on something but if he disagrees with your opinion you get docked off points.
Excellent professor.; makes things clear, wants students to write and provide analysis with lots of evidence .... he grades based on how well the analysis incorporates the strongest evidence available .. he says in his syllabus as well as his announcements ... some people just dont get it and take no responsibility
Professor Varga is excellent. Expect to pass with an A as long as you actively participate in discussions and quizzes and include every possible detail in discussions. Professor Varga makes sure to leave feedback on all discussions and primary source projects (2) to help you understand the content and learn from your mistakes.
Take his classes only if you are interested in learning and willing to study. Mr. Varga is not an easy grader (you won't get a good grade unless you know the material). I recommend students to take good notes during class to do well on the exams. You will learn a LOT in this class about history and being a good human being. Great teacher.
Please do not take his class. Whatever he wants to do in class he does. Never understand students psychology. If you are hard working student n need great grade from your subject than dont take his class .if you want to repeat class again than go ahead he gives you chance. He his very careless while checking students test copy n assignment .
Terrible professor. gave me 0's on five 300+ word discussions simply because there was no quote from the textbook or he did not like the one given. Then emailed me and told me to drop the class. Put in lots of work only for him to be extra picky and give me no credit at all.
Very tough grader for an online class. Instructions are clear but very specific and make the assignments and grading very hard. Take this class at school, it'll be way easier and more clear.
so critical of discussion posts its almost discouraging, many strict guidelines on all work as well. the comments i received on my discussion to did not help in any way. too strict.
I took John's HIST112 online class this semester (Spring 2020) and found his style to be quite good. He assigns readings from the text and supplies videos that you must watch. The assignments are discussion board posts every week. There are also 2 quizzes per week. This class can be easy enough if you give it the time it deserves.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. He is such a hard grader and the lengths I had to go to just to get a decent grade was outrageous. I took his online course and the reading took me 5-6 hours a day. The rest of the work took up whatever time I had left in the day. Never ever taking his class again. I tried so hard all for a boring C+.
RUDE. I have never had any problems with my teachers until him. The very first assignment he gave me a zero. I asked him why I would get a zero when it had not even been past the due date and that I usually plan my week out ahead of time with those due dates posted. He stated I should just drop the class and I should have read the syllabus.
Worst professor I've ever had hands down. He has so many specific standards and if you miss one thing he gives you no credit. Horrible with instructions, so unclear in discussion prompts. Do yourself a huge favor and never take this class.
Definitely seemed like he wanted me to fail. I would email him after each assignment after getting almost a fail on each assignment. He is EXTREMELY particular. Reading the syllabus extremely thoroughly and exceeding every word limit will be essential to get a decent grade.
John Varga is a horrible teacher. He didn't teach a single thing all semester. He assigns readings and discussions every week. If you don't mention everything to ever exist in history you will not get a perfect score on the discussions.
1 discussion and 1 discussion reply per week plus 2 quizzes( takes the highest grade!) 2 Unit Discussions and 1 Primary Source Analysis. Weekly chapter reading + videos. Struggled at first but realized he wants every detail possible in discussions and my grade went up. Breaking discussions down into parts makes it easier.
Tough grader. NO tests. discussions are short essays must do to receive credit. only essays for the semester. due to covid he did not want to put lecture videos of people seeing him. Before in person was study guides and helpful, online those study guides weren't helpful w/o his lecture. The study guide outline 4 the essays
Where can I start. I'm being generous by giving this professor one star. I'm taking him right now over the winter and his class sucks. If you don't mention every detail in the book you're not going to get an A in his class. Also he doesn't give good feedback on discussion posts. Nor does he teach. DO NOT TAKE HISTORY 111 WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!
I'm taking this teacher right now for winter and really he's not as bad as he seems in these unfair reviews. He doesn't do online lectures so it's basically a teach yourself class but it's pretty much just reading the textbook. His discussions are pretty standard and quizzes are easy. Just put in the time and work and you'll get a decent grade.
DONT TAKE HIM. EVEN IF HE'S THE LAST OPTION DONT TAKE HIM. WORST TEACHER EVER. AGAIN DONT TAKE HIM
This class in all seriousness is not that hard. You read the book, take some quizzes and participate in a few discussion boards. That being said, this is the strictest prof I've ever had. As a previous review mentioned, if you do not mention almost everything that happened in whatever time period you are writing about, you don't get full credit.
He's literally is the worst teacher to ever exist! This dude doesn't care how much effort you put into your work because he'll always give you no credit. He calls himself a professor but all he does is sit around, link different webpages, and give harsh feedback. Don't tell him you have any issues or he'll pick on you and take everything personal!
Don't listen to the 4.0 good rating, this teacher has gone downhill since the moment I ever spoke to him, getting more and more aggressive with his emails towards me and not showing any sort of support from his side. He blames you as being the issue but the guy doesn't teach, he literally only links 2 videos and says go do it. Worst grader/ teacher
You definitely have to work for a good grade in his class as he does take points off for anything you miss on discussions. As long as you do good on the quizzes, you should finish with an A/B because he drops your lowest scores. Easy to reach and am taking him again for a different class.
I am a first-year student and this course was harder than English 101. I love history but this wasn't what I expected or even close. I admit I was also overwhelmed with a full time school schedule but all of my other courses seemed much easier to get through so I had to take a DROP.
If you're just looking to fulfill requirements just take another professor. For discussions, he is extremely critical. Just know the requirements you read are the absolute minimum. Ignore the minimum word count because he expects every relevant factor to the discussion to be included for an A. Definitely not worth the time for a GE history class.
He grades tough in the discussion boards. If you dont mention and explore everything about the topic, you will not get a good grade. The discussion prompts are vague, so be sure to include EVERYTHING in the chapters that mention the topic. The quizzes are not too bad because you can take them again and you can also find everyone on quizlet.
Prof. Varga pushes you and a tough grader. However, you'll figure out what you need to do quickly in order to succeed: take quizzes while material is fresh, take notes as you're reading to incorporate into your discussions and unit analyses. Professor wants as much supporting detail as possible - easy to do as long as you jot notes while reading.
If you are taking this class just for a GE do not take it with this professor, he grades extremely hard on the discussion boards and nitpicks every little detail when the assignments description explains the bare minimum. I messed up on one discussion board and got a zero and then I missed one discussion board and he dropped me from the course.
Horrible!!! Seriously the worst teacher I have ever had, and I've had some pretty bad teachers! Absolutely do not take his class. Under no circumstance should you take this class.
If you have an issue, Professor Varga will instruct you to reread the disorganized course syllabus and not offer any other help. You could be an A student, 4.0 GPA, and Varga will still prove to be more difficult than your hardest STEM class.Expect to copy/paste the entirety of the book into your discussion boards, that's basically what he wants
He is a Horrible professor. DO NOT take his class. He says he is willing to assist you when he notices your grades are down and then doesn't assist you in any way but instead tells you that it is in your best interest to drop the course. He is AWFUL. Hands down the worst class I've taken. He never answers your questions and blames everything on you
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is a very tough grader and is not understanding at all. he doesn't answer any questions for him if you email him. He grades tough and expects you to read chapters of the book, write, and harshly grades your work. I wrote a 1000+ word essay when 750 words were required AND RECEIVED A 71% #nevertakehisclass. #horrible #ugh
This professor is absolutely awful. With his fully online class, he doesn't teach at all. All he does is have you watch extremely long videos of other professors teaching the topic and read long chapters from the book. You'll spend a long time on your submissions just to get a bad grade for reasons that are unbelievably stupid. Beware!
A class I took with him had discussions and what you had to do is defend or disagree with a topic he chose. The only sources he chose were textbooks and HOUR-long videos. Most of the time you had to watch multiple hour-long videos to cite sources for the discussions. Mistakes are terribly explained or not at all. I would add more but I sadly can't
Just kinda pointlessly a hardass on things. Kinda rude, and passive aggressive. To give credit where credit is due, he's very proficient with canvas, and outlines things well. He genuinely reads your work, even if his feedback isn't always the best. The class was mostly discussion boards, and prompts were pretty hit or miss.
Respectfully, he takes two weeks to grade assignments, during a Winter cse. Has only 1 office hour per week, at 9pm at night. Is VERY specific on what he wants you to do for an assignment, but ONLY after it's submitted. He will say go to the supermarket to get eggs, but when you get back he says, "you forgot the popcorn, where's the dino nuggets?"
If you take this class online, it will be pretty self-taught. Have to read a 30+ page ch. abt once a week and write a very thorough discussion response with citing from both book and hour+ long video. This class taught me a lot of discipline, and I definitely earned my A.
I wish there were more bad tags to choose from. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM. His comments on discussion posts are discouraging and backhanded instead of being helpful. He grades so unfairly, and I wrote him a respectful email about my concerns with him and his grading and he did not care. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR
I had Professor Varga for my last history General Education portion of my Associates Degree at COC. Professor Varga is really a nice person if you connect with him via canvas and express what is happening, it's all about communication. BE PREPARED TO READ and do not leave out any important details when it comes to assignments, you'll pass it!
Most of what is said is true. He is unnecessarily picky with his grading for an intro course. He doesn't tell you what needs to be on the discussion boards so you HAVE to put EVERYTHING from the chapters in them. He was nice one-on-one through canvas but his responses/feedback can sound pretty cookie-cutter. Not the worst but not the best.
quite ridiculous. hardest class ive even taken. does not let you turn in late work gives 0, does not let you edit anything under 5 minutes or 0. syllabus says he wants 2 citations, but highest grade ive gotten was 14.5/15 and i did 27 citations. LET THIS BE A WARNING!!
He is a nice guy but grades very harshly. He wants you to have to dig through the syllabus to find any sort of helpful answers. He also doesn't make it helpful on where to find the MANDATORY book you need for his class. I just feel like he makes everything like a maze when it does not have to be. Also, no redoing any assignments.
This is by far one of the worst teachers i have ever had in my life. He has made my first year of college horrible and made me want to find another school and find something else to do. If you do ONE thing wrong on any assignment, he gives u a F. He is by far one of the worst teachers i have ever had. take this as a warning, pick another teacher!
I have taken 3 classes with Professor Varga over the years and found his lectures interesting and easy to understand. Professor Varga has a way of connecting the dots and applying it to modern times. I read a few negative reviews and just think the person who wrote it might not be ready for the college level.
I took a quick 5 week course with him this winter and learned so much. Sometimes "give 2 examples of.." and you give 2, but he'll dock points because they're not the 2 he wanted lol. Still gave really fair grading. The work load wasn't crazy it's still a class you have to do work but it was a perfect amount. I really enjoyed Varga and his class.
a lot of reading involved, even if you do the requirements for the discussions, he still wants above and beyond. and late work is not accepted at all, even if a minute.
WARNING WARNING I was in another country during summer and had to go walk to a place to get intenret, very strict. I worked quite hard in this. THIS TEACHER, MAN, his expectations he said to put minimum use 1 source for the discussion reply, and the highest i got was 14.5/15 and i put 8 sources. i turned sum late by 2 minutes and he gave me 0/250:(
I started off the class good/ okay but over time i could not get more than a 15/25. He's extremely harsh when grading. I have never had this much difficulty when being graded in any of my other classes. This class made me feel like I did not know anything and like giving up because I couldn't get a better grade.
Out of the 15 classes that I have taken this class was the absolute worst. The professor gives you feedback written like Shakespeare which is not helpful at all. If you don't meet certain standards, this teacher will give you a zero on your assignment. Do Not Take This Teacher!
Toughest grader I've had. Even after spending hours on discussion boards, I would have points deducted for omitting a single detail in my argument. I only got an A because I devoted everything to this class, which is not realistic for people taking classes at the same time. Fortunately no tests though!
Lecture heavy will ask some questions during class but not a lot. Make sure to read the syllabus because it will tell you what to read each week. He will not tell you what to do the syllabus will. USE the lecture guide, do the readings, and go to the TLC for that extra help. Going to the TLC was a game changer for me. Good luck.
If you are an atheist or a religious person and have ever wondered what hell feels like, this class is for you. The workload is insane, the readings, videos, and lectures have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the coursework. He will critique you and grill you and when you ask for clarification he can not elabritate on what he said. Run 4 ur life.
many people on here talk about how awful this man is. my experience was as long as u are very detailed, don't use "according to the book/video" and read your book, you'll be ok! just because you write a lot and put a lot of quotes doesn't mean you understood the topic, make sure to read! It takes a long time but with hard work it will be okay!
He is tough! Be ready to read, because there is quite a lot. Do not look over ANYTHING!!! All information matters! He makes you work for this A and you need to be able to work for it too. Read the prompt carefully and get your facts down. You may want to take notes too! Converse with friends to see if you missed anything! Good luck you got this!!
One of my favorite, if not my favorite, professors I have had. Genuinely cares about his students and will absolutely work with
Do not take this professors class no matter what. He is the worst teacher I have ever had and I wasted money and time. I also learned nothing. If you get him please request another professor ASAP!!!
Professor Varga's class is tough, but with dedication, it's manageable. Read the textbook, take detailed notes, and use unstuckstudy AI for practice - it really helps prepare for exams. Attend all classes, as participation is key.
Do not take this class. His guidelines for discussion boards seem very simple, but he expects you to greatly, and I mean GREATLY exceed the requirements for those discussion assignments. He does absolutely NO teaching, but what he will do is give you harsh and unforgiving comments on your work if it does not meet his impractical standards.
Professor Varga gives clear instructions for how to be successful in his class and also at the end of the semester drops your two lowest grades to help you out. I found that doing the reading and citing evidence and going a little bit beyond the minimum word count was enough to receive a good grade in his class. He isn't a bad or mean professor.
16 week course with Professor Varga Weekly discussion boards that required evidence from a chapter reading (30ish pages) and 2 lecture videos (1hr each). Every few weeks we had a discussion based on present day events and 2 required short essays. Yes he is a strict grader, however READ THE SYLLABUS! He drops low scores discussion scores! He is kind
This is by far the worst professor I have ever taken. He is not even teaching. He just has us read the textbook and gives assignments but is more concerned about citations than the actual work. He takes forever to grade everything and he is not helpful at all. AVOID!
His online course grading is extremely inconsistent, and his responses to discussions do not align with the content submitted by students. He also insists that we extensively search for content from textbooks and course materials. Grading is very slow, and it takes two weeks after each week's discussion to see our scores.
This professor is a tough grader and assigns a lot of reading. The assignments themselves are fairly easy, but there's a lot of writing and weekly discussions. They're very specific about what they expect and how you need to cite your sources, so be sure to follow the instructions closely.
Professor Varga is a straight forward and great professor! There are discussion boards that are easy to do and some other big writing assignments. However, the textbook is pretty easy to find information and he provides the videos each week as a resource. Sometimes, the grading can be a little tough. He excuses three assignments if needed.
