VERY arrogant, but otherwise interesting and good prof
he is funny .. great prof .. hope his exams are good tho'
I do believe that cockiness is his middle name.It is nice to have people know of your achievements but when you take half of every lecture to enlighten the class on everything you have ever done...it bites. We for the class, not the profs arrogance.
His exams were very fair and quite like his practice exams. I never fell asleep in his classes and he seemed very approachable.
I think his exams are good. Never will fall asleep in his class. He has cool demos. and he is a smart man .. knows a lot and is helpful.
Most amazing prof ever. The man is a genius. And for all those who say he's arrogant, I've got one thing for ya, it's not bragging if ya done it
Somewhat arrogant. But then again, the man is incredible! Even though I hate organic chem, I thought he did a great job!
very good teacher, my advice - make sure you know how to EVERYTHING on the practice exams; he'll reuse questions and not even change them, oh, and pay attention to the questions he offers money for, he'll use those on the exam too :)
Vederas is an amazingly smart, funny and entertaining man. Classes are exciting and fun. Majorly lacking in the technology and organizational skills, though. Talks fast, writes small and is unclear on what is course content. Never boring though!
He was a great teacher! I'm not sure where people get the arrogance thing from though. I thought his life stories were entertaining.
well his practice exams and actual exams are very alike BUT they are SOSOOSOSOSOOSOSOSOSO hard..... its jsut too hard.. and his stories are kinda lame.... i dont knwo wat to respond to his stories...and he gets off topic alot and i just get lost....
He goes VERY fast, trys to answer your question but then you get lost even more
The demos he did were really cool. As to what I actually learned, I'm still not sure, all he did was draw pictures and barely explained anything. I found the exams to be incredibly tough.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He just lists a million compounds out and then acts you to recite their common names and structures out on exams. This isnt teaching, this is just STUPID. I HATE YOU VEDERAS!!!
Dr. Vederas is an absolutely amazing prof. His classes are fun to attend, and he always uses interesting examples to reinforce the concepts. He is by far the best prof I have had yet. Extremely willing to help, and explains concepts very clearly and easily. Lots of hilarious stories, and great demos, Vederas is a terric prof!!!
Vederas is a really good prof. Gives lots of examples to help relate to the reactions and chemicals. His lectures are usually quite interesting. He sometimes even gives out money for correct answers to his questions during lectures. Although he asks chemical and common names of some specific compounds on exams, you should do fine if you study.
I loved his many cool experiments. Due to his teaching, I am more interested in organic chemistry.
Makes the chemistry material as interesting as possible but his tests and notes are scrambles from out of no where, no real structure to either but atleast makes class interesting.
He's a great prof. Nice demos, great explanation. Uses interesting molecules as examples and has really good teaching methods. I learnt so much more under him than anyone else. He's the best chem prof that I've ever had. I really enjoyed his classes.
So far my favourite professor. Makes class very interesting and enjoyable. My love of organic chemistry has increased drastically as has my understanding. Excellent professor. All professors should take a class called Professing 101 taught by John Vederas before they are allowed to profess.
made chemistry very interesting by breaking apart the lessons with awesome stories . . .
Don't exactly love ochem but vederas made the class a lot of fun. experiments/jokes made the class very interesting. tests were ok, just make sure to do the practice exams. memorizing everday molecules for extra points was a pain though.

I'm not sure what I hate more; Vederas or organic chem. I'm not there to learn about the setup of the university or anything else that doesn't have to do with my class. I would prefer if he would spend the entiring class teaching organic chem, rather than telling his pointless stories.
Difficult concepts to understand, did a good job of trying to help students grasp concepts. Very interesting, brilliant professor.
Wasn't a bad prof so can't give him a bad rating, but didn't particularly like him, either. He didnt seem well prepared, his notes were hard to follow..and I dont know about anyone else but it seemed like all of his stories involved someone dying.Easy exams though.Do the practise ones. All round good prof.
I really enjoyed his class, it was the only lecture I would never think about skipping. He is definately a brilliant chemist and personally I found his stories intrigueing. for a 80 minute class, 5 minutes worth of stories is a good break for the brain. Most importantly he had relatively easy exams! Highly recommended.
Really interesting professor. Told really cool stories in class and taught the course material well. His exams are really easy if you do the practice ones.
cool!
Excellent prof, he can always keep you interested during the lecture. Funny guy. His class is easy as long as you review his notes and go to the lectures.
He's a funny guy, and a great prof. His style of teaching is perfect for a first year course. I didn't like how he modeled his exams so closely with the sample one's, though. That really inflated the average. He also curved a bit hard (at least the top of the curve).
Amazing prof that made organic chem interesting and easy to understand. Both exams were exactly like the practice ones and new questions were all from stuff that he emphasized in class, so it was easy to figure out what to study.
Great Prof, he actually gets you involved in the lectures. He loves OChem, the way he teaches it makes you understand everything. At times he will give out free money if you answer his questions correct. Compared to the other profs, this guy is the best, hands down.
SO FUNNY. Love this guy, he is so fabulous I would almost take another organic chem if he taught it... almost. Loves what he does, starts each lecture with a random five minute lesson on life (e.g. med school tips, history of the universe). Exams are hard because the material is hard, not him. My favourite prof I've ever had.
Vederas, will you marry me? Seriously though, this was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken. Starts off each class with a 10min story on something completely random and his enthusiasm is infectious! He has a smile on throughout the entire lecture and you can tell he loves what he does and loves to teach. Doable tests too. RECOMMENDED
Awesome prof. Does his best to make class interesting and entertaining. Really enjoys his field. Great demos, pretty often.
Vederas is the sh!t- best chem prof I've had! He's a genius too, he's gotten pretty much every award except the Nobel Prize it seems, which makes me even more happy that he takes the time to teach undergrad chem! :) My fave part: the explosion demos, and how he's ALWAYS smiling! Great at explaining concepts in person too. Hard class but worth it!
I don't know why others speak so positively of his teaching. Dude is definitely a great guy, but his teaching style benefits particularly to those(try hards) who succeed(get's As)by strenuous amount of effort and indirectly penalizes the clever ones. His focus is mostly on memorization, not intellectual capacity. HORRIBLE.
Best prof i`ve ever had!! i hate ochem but i enjoyed his classes and listening to his random stories which always had somthing to do with suicide drugs and sex...his class is def. worth wild. i would recommend him to everyone!
I can't see what all the fuss is about. I found his stories a complete waste of time, and his tests did not require anything more than memorization, not actually mastery of the material. I got an A in 261, but struggled in 263. He's also got a huge ego and was not approachable for help. I would not recommend him.
I took 161 back with this guy in 2006. He is f'ing amazing. His class averages are low but that is expected (first years are, for the most part, pretty stupid) so it was easy to get an A+ in the class. Tells awesome random stories, one time even lit the class perimeter on fire in a tinfoil track using ether. Was a blast.
Easily the best professor I have had in all four years. Every concept he teaches he actually uses interesting examples (synthesis of about twenty drugs). He uses demos everyday, even a few explosions that had most people screaming. AND he is hilarious. Only drawback is I thought it was final was extremely tough compared to midterm, so be ready.
J. Veds is simply amazing. I strongly disliked CHEM 261 (taught by another prof) but Vederas made 263 ridiculously engaging. His passion for the subject matter is contagious. Study what he tells you to know and do his practice exams, and you'll be fine.
I really didn't like his class much. He had interesting stories. it kept my attention. but his exams were ridiculous. It's true that they are just like the practice exams, but they were very hard. class averages were low. he asked you to memorize structure more than understand. I hated the class.
Great prof! has hilarious life lessons and stories every class, teaches way above the student level and the tests are hard. Do lots of practice!
I really enjoyed his class, tests are similar to the practice exams, attendance is mandatory, and i thought he was very funny. i loved the class, yes it requires more memorization than O.chem should but it wasn't hard!!
You are in good hands, take him. And here's one tip: memorize questions and answers from all practice exams he posts.
I love this prof so much. Definitely one of my favorites! I would strongly suggest taking this class with him. Make sure to study, though, and go to class!
I found him pompous and unapproachable. I far preferred my 261 instructor, who actually taught us something, as opposed to tell stories and then test us on how much we had memorized. I do not recommend.
Fantaastic prof! his examples were hilarious and he made the class very interesting to attend. exams were hard but after the curve it was fine
Don't miss a lecture, not because you'll fall behind, but because he has awesome jokes and demonstrations every few classes. Great with explanations, overall a great prof. He will answer questions during the half point break of class or after. I absolutely recommend him.
Lectures really helpful and wouldn't recommend missing any. Class demonstrations are fun and relate to topic discussed. Exams were tough, but just requires a lot of practice, reading assigned chapters in the text and doing a few problems. Overall great prof- explains questions clearly and says whether or not you need to know something.
Dr. Vederas is a hilarious professor. He always started off the lectures with these random facts and even life lessons. The class content was very interesting. Unfortunately, his midterm was brutal, BUT the final was very straightforward. As long as you go to class, review regularly, the final should not be a challenge. Highly recommended :D
Classes are very interesting with a ton of cool experiments, and he is an incredibly smart man with lots of cool stories. The midterm was very similar to the one posted online and pretty basic, but the final was more difficult. There's a fair bit of review and work involved in this class to understand the material, but his classes are awesome.
Really great prof and incredibly intelligent. Must attend class because he says things related to the exams. Pretty easy final if you study. But midterm a little unfair (no calculator for complicated long division question worth 28 points)
John is probably the smartest chemistry prof at this university.and he can teach!, his classes are very interesting and he always shares cool stores and experiments with the class. he covers the material very well and is always eager to answer questions. if you are taking chem 261 take it with Dr. Vederas
His lectures were all over the place! Very hard to learn anything from them but his online notes were helpful
Vederas has a way of keeping you engaged, but sometimes I wasnt sure what was important and what wasnt. Exams are tough, and some questions overweighted, but fair. Do the practice problems and you'll survive
Great prof. Really interesting lectures, and always had cool demos. Midterm was a a bit on the hard side, but the final was super straight-forward.
Vederas is truly a brilliant man and makes organic chemistry seem interesting. The course in itself is difficult so you need to study, but his knowledge and passion of the subject is infectious. He is the ONLY reason why I continued taking organic chemistry into the 300 level.
His lectures are honestly the best Lectures ever. No professor has the enthusiasm and funny stories to keep us learning and laughing at the same time. His final however ; you are screwed.
Vederas was an awesome prof, with awesome notes and awesome demos. Lectures are mandatory if you want a good mark, but they're pretty interesting. He gives people money for answering questions sometimes - I think he gave out 200$ this semester (?). The class is pretty challenging but if you take notes and do practice problems you should be fine.
Good prof! Didn't like his lecture style at first, but going to class and writing notes and then seeing his posted notes after was a good way to learn for this class. Has stories for every compound he talks about, and definitely kept lectures interesting. Looking back I enjoyed this class and his lectures. Exams are fair and averages are low.
Very good prof, tells interesting stories. Love the little talk in the beginning of each class, the break during a 1.5hr class is nice too. Does experiments and pass things around to spice things up. Posts detailed notes online. I wish I had done better but I didn't work hard myself since I always kind of hated ochem, but he made it not so bad.
Prof does a great job and the demos were VERY interesting. He is always smiling and shows interest in the course. My advice to ace the course (A+)is: study his notes, the text and problems. Make flash cards a few weeks before the exams and learn them! Very interesting material and I learned a lot. Great prof and would certainly take another course.
Other than ignoring my email just before the final, he's a great prof. Class was interesting, he talks about random stuff sometimes which is interesting and takes up time hehe. His tests are pretty easy and fair. His demos are also pretty cool. He's a real down to earth person it seems, and he seems to happy and enthusiastic teaching. Recommended!!
Vederas was a super nice and knowledgeable prof, very smart dude. Notes were a little scattered and online notes contained more in depth explanation of topics than hand written notes (online notes >). He went off topic a lot but it kept us entertained. Midterm was so-so, and final was on the easier side, but know structures of well known molecules.
Dr. Vederas is a great prof and definitely the best chemistry prof I've had. His notes were awesome up until the midterm, the notes weren't that great leading up to the final which was a lot more difficult than the midterm. But his exams are definitely fair, just need to put in the time using the textbook as supplement. He makes ochem interesting.
great guy, good examples and straight forward tests
He's funny! class can be complicated but just do the practice midterms and you'll be fine. The final was dreadful so have a really good grade going into it!
There is a reason this course is curved, it is very hard. It definitely requires a large time commitment. Don't get behind, it killed me. The lab is a mark booster. Vederas keeps you interested with fun chemistry facts which really helps keep you awake. The material is hard to understand and he has high expectations. GO TO CLASS
Don't even think twice, one of the most influential lecturers on campus. You won't regret it.
Take his class, you won't regret it! He's amazing! Cool demos and his stories were hilarious! I don't think i've ever laughed so hard in a class because of the prof, which actually made me want to go to class. i would take this class again just so i can sit in his lectures and hear his stories and jokes. His exams are tough but fair.
POMPUS. Have to memorize useless structures. Clear upto midterm. Downhill from there.
Dr. Vederas has inspired me like no other professor at the University. It is clear that he's in this field for his love of all things chemistry as he gives hilarious anecdotes before the beginning of every lecture and gives amazing demos at least once a month. Class was interesting, but beware, the tests are tough. Do all that he recommends.
His love for chemistry is contagious. I loved the little historylife lesson before every class. Tests are tough. Posts notes online. Practice exams are not much of a help because material varies from year to year. Have to memorize a lot of pointless things for the exams . Class requires a lot of work but lab component is easy and fun!
Very funny, gave away money sometimes for right answers. The textbook saved my butt; it was actually really well written and if you do the practice problems, itll really help in the long term. Models are super useful too. Ochem isnt as scary as people say it is, but there is a lot to learn.
Best ochem prof I could've asked for! He made ochem interesting with stories at the beginning of every class. Exams are super easy if you just understand his notes and memorize mechanisms. Don't read the textbook because everything he tests are in the notes
I was dreading taking ochem but Dr. Vederas made it so much more enjoyable! Lectures are interesting and he brings in a lot of real world examples. The midterm was decently easy but the final was a bit tricky (lots of memorization!). Make sure to attend lectures since he leaves out some important things in the online notes
this guy is really great! of course ochem isnt an easy class but if you show up to class and reviewmemorize his notes then you'll be set! the midterm and final were both kinda easy and the lab will give you a big boost in your grade! Overall this guy is the man! take him if you can! his online notes literally were enough for me to get an A.
Exciting and you can tell he really knows his stuff. He goes into a lot of detail (especially for reactions) compared to a lot of the other o chem classes but it helps in later o chem courses. If you go to class and review the notes periodically you'll do well. Final was very specific. If you don't pay attention you won't do well.
Super great professor! Really made Organic Chemistry interesting and he explains things very well so I encourage going to class. Relates the subject to the real world so you don't feel like you are just memorizing. If you attend class and do what he says there is no reason not to excel!
Wow where to even begin? If there is any prof who'll win a Nobel Price, its Vederas. He's hilarious, SOO inspirational, his love for ochem along with how intelligent he is are incredibly contagious, and he gives money for answering questions. His midterm and final were both super easy, I don't get why everyone says ochem is hard. TAKE HIM!!!
he's okay, tests are what he says they will be
nothing to say 5 star
He uploads lecture notes that are way better than any notes you can take in class. Just pay attention for when tells you what structures to memorize cause they'll probably end up on an exam. He also gives you lots of practice/sample finals and midterms which are super helpful!
Vederas is one of the best profs I've had in all of university. He is so funny, and knows how to keep students engaged. He's crystal clear, and tests on exactly what he says he will. His actual exams are just like his practice exams, and he does lots of examples to make sure you know what you're doing. Strongly recommend this prof.
Super funny, trys to make class interesting and fun. Will often do experiments in class, or pass around compounds, or tell stories. Tests are very similar to practice exams. He even sometimes offers up small cash rewards for answering a question. Need to attend class as he tells you which specific compounds you need to memorize.
Now I get enthusiasm to O-chem. It's just that he went sorta fast at the end of the term.
Dr. Vederas is definitely entertaining and lively. Notes online were definitely a big help and his exams are EXACTLY like the practice exams he posts from previous years. It is incredibly difficult to fail this class but if you are struggling, textbook is not exactly user friendly, just go to Chem help sessions. Memorization is required.
He does very interesting examples in class, and has neat demos every now and then. Great prof, and helped maintain my interest in organic chemistry.
Great prof, tells interesting stories at the beginning of class to broaden your perspective of the world. Easy to understand. Great for office hours to chat and to learn about organic chemistry. Would recommend, he makes ochem fun.
Such amazing lectures, and a really funny guy. 10/10 would take him again.
The material is difficult but he teaches it very well and posts all the class notes
Good Prof. He makes Ochem fun!
Dr. Vederas is an amazing person and lecturer. He begins class with something interesting before delving into course content. He's super funny. The course itself is grueling, and sometimes he can be a bit confusing, but he'll go over it until you understand if you ask him. He does a good job at being engaging.
Vederas is a great prof for Chem 261! His lectures are very interesting and he knows how to keep the class engaged, tells interesting stories about history of chemistry at beginning of class. Exams are fair and quite similar to the practice exams he gives, no quizzes, final and midterm only. Would take again if he was teaching 263 this winter!
Amazing prof for chemistry, would love to take other courses by him if I needed to. He spends the first couple minutes giving some sort of interesting relevant facts and then does plenty of examples for each topic. I went into the class expecting it be harder than general chemistry and he makes me think the complete opposite!
John is a jokester! Really makes the class insteresting, as ochem can be a challenge and confusing. Always starts the class with a joke or a little blurb of interesting history. He always stops and makes sure no one has any questions before moving on. Made ochem not as bad as I thought it was going to be!
Amazing Ochem prof! You can tell he's really knowledgeable in this field and is a real genius. Always has interesting anecdotes to give you a chance to breathe. Fair exams, and really inspires you to learn and love the subject. Bless this man, he's an amazing professor, wish I could take more classes with him.
Vederas is a great prof - it's clear he's passionate about chemistry and is eager to help out. His tests are quite difficult though and even though they're out of a lot, there aren't really part marks given out for questions so it's really easy to lose a lot of marks. Class itself is very interesting though - don't skip!!!
His tests are structured exactly like his practice exams which is VERY comforting and he always spends about 5 minutes at the start class with some life facts or jokes. He was a little sporadic with the reactions and mechanisms. He taught them well, but making your own list of reactions is necessary to organize everything! Overall amazing prof!!
Vederas is a very enthusiastic prof which makes learning ochem a lot better. He goes over things a couple of times to make sure you understand it. His class notes are a little scattered but you can always look at the online notes. His midterms are very similar to past exams. He goes a little fast at the end so make sure to keep track of reactions.
He is a great prof! He is very enthusiastic about the subject and very knowledgeable. The exams are just like the practice exams. No surprises.
I really appreciate that the midterms and final were very similar to the practice and he does not try to use trick questions and ask on things not discussed in lecture. Also, in lecture he is constantly reinforcing previous material and topics to drill important ideas into your brain. Great professor, would definitely recommend him for this course!
Worst prof ever; he chose to teach the hardest material and decided to ignore the mandatory but easy stuff.
O-chem was pretty easy with him. He pretty well told you exactly what was going to be on the tests, if you payed attention in class. Had 1 midterm and a final. The midterm was 36% and the final was 39% of the final grade. No homework. Just midterm and final. Explains things well. He's great in office hours.
The best prof I've had to date. He made such a hard course easy. No surprises on exams, just do his practice tests and make sure you understand them. He starts lectures off by speaking about life experiences and made o chem fun.
One of my favourite professors ever. He writes all his notes on the whiteboard in the lectures and does so at talking speed so you dont get overwhelmed, a small bit incredibly useful factor. He has TAs in class that take notes and posts them online. His exams are fairly straightforward and not tricky. The textbook is useful but I didnt use it.
HE IS HONESTLY THE BEST!! 10000000% recommend this Professor!! wish I could take more classes with him.
Dr. Vederas is a rare gem, he is actual a good teacher!! He is so amazing and inspirational. I wish I could take more classes with him. Ochem was rough, but if you have to take it, take it with Vederas.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. Absolutely brilliant. His tests are tough, but also very fair, and look exactly like the practice material. A gifted professor who made organic chemistry fun. WOW! Vederas rocks.
Vederas made this class very enjoyable! Material can be tough but if you attend class and actually pay attention to the MANY HINTS you'll do well. I'd recommend doing the questions in the textbook to get a better understanding of the material. Biggest tip is to GO THROUGH ALL PRACTICE EXAMS (especially T/F questions), he likes to reuse them.
Taking chem 263 with Clive made me realize what a gem Dr Vederas was. His lecture notes are clear and he actually TEACHES the class. Sure he may teach a little bit of Chem 263 material but his teaching makes up for it. Honestly I didn't even pass the final but ended up with an A-. Just do well on the midterm (DO ALL HIS PRACTICE TESTS) and the lab
In terms of online learning, Im yet to have a prof as bad as him. Nothing against him, cuz I can tell hes a good person. But when it comes to the aspect of online teaching, he might as well not even be there
Chose his class because of the good reviews, but realized he isn't that good teaching this class online. his notes and videos are alright, but the live q&a didn't teach me anything and he spent too much time talking about his stories and the curriculum. had to teach myself everything and use my friend's notes from last year. do not recommend :(
Literally the worst prof for online classes. He seems nice but I studied my head off and still got a bad mark. He has almost no practice questions. Just a few practice midterms. His organization of the class was the worst. His questions didnt reflect the depth we learned it in. Zoom sessions are useless. So try to learn everything on ur own.
Try babooram for online organic chem. Avoid this teacher at all costs. He is nice and replies to email, however that wont help ur GPA.
Dr. Vederas has good videos, but the Q and A's are full of people asking horrible questions. If you watch his videos and read the text you'll be fine. The only good part of the Q and A's are his stories, and the occasional course info.
His videos are hella well made but the Zoom is mediocre. Really tries to answer your questions, but most are basic. Midterm was just like the practice.
I was repeating this class, so I already knew the material but I know for a fact that this class would be horrible for the students that take it for the first time. He doesn't care about u or ur mark. he doesn't answer questions. his only time that he is willing to help u is the Q and A sessions, which is horribly unorganized. Exams are difficult.
His class is frustrating not because of the material but because of his lack of answering our questions and giving us importance. He is not available to help. He doesn't care about ur situation. Avoid him at all costs but if you have to take him, get ready to learn everything on your own. The exams are difficult and unexpected, very unfair.
He has really informative videos that are accessible anytime, and they are well organized. Definitely need to be actively paying attention as his class is on the difficult side, but I would say that's chemistry in general. I would recommend taking him, but be ready to put in the work.
To all the people who have wrote that the exam was too hard for the Fall2020 term, we haven't even had our midterm yet. Vederas is a decent teacher, people just want to have someone to blame when they don't get the grade they want. His videos and notes explain things well enough and he says that we arent gonna be tested on any of the zoom stuff
midterm made me cry :( Will update later if difficulty/structure of the course and exams changes. Mostly I am annoyed because previous year students' midterm was closer to the practice midterm than for this year's exam (this year was different in terms of format and difficulty) did good on practice and know I will do badly on midterm good guy tho
Videos and notes are great, but the zoom lectures are not very helpful. I recommend students to spend more time studying instead of attending the zoom q&a. The textbook questions that he assigned are also quite hard and beyond the scope of this course. So basically just use his notes and do the practice tests and understanding everything in them.
I really enjoyed John as my prof. The problem most people probably have with him is that he is test heavy; besides lab, your grade is made up of a midterm and a final. I wouldn't say these were over hard- it's a hard topic, but he's fair with level of difficulty. Just pay attention and put the time in!
the final exam was nothing like the practice midterms that he assigned. the mechanism questions were really hard and confusing. the midterm was okay for me but the final was worth 40% and i am sure i didnt do too good on it even though i studied really hard.
Not sure if things were different with classes being online, but I felt that the assessments were not an accurate measure of what was taught in class. For example, the final had only 25 multiple choice questions and most of them were on pre-midterm content which was frustrating as I had put many hours into studying post-midterm content.
Vederas is an amazing and hilarious guy, but not an amazing prof. The final was worth nearly 40% of our grade and only had 25 questions (all mc or t/f). I'm not sure if being online made the course that much harder for him to teach, but I don't think he adjusted well enough to teaching online properly. I definitely feel like my education suffered.
I took 264 with him. His teaching and notes is very not very detailed and are very generalized. Your mark is based on participation, midterm, and a final so not much opportunity to improve your marks. Exams are difficult. Online teaching was done poorly.
Dr. Vederas is a gem! He was very well prepared for the transition and can tell he is very passionate about the course and his jokes and applications of the material put a smile on my face. Straightforward about what you need to know, exams do require you understand rather than memorize but its really fair!! Do take him he makes organic chem fun!
He will test you well and you can't get away with memorization but he is a VERY fair prof. His notes are very step by step and systematic which is what you need for OCHEM. He is a G, highly recommend him. Also, he scares you when he tells you past curve cutoffs (maybe to make you work harder) so don't be scared of that just work your best!
Take CHEM 261 with Vederas if youre someone who prefers single midterms, and a final as opposed to heavier work. Overall, this professor will prepare you for CHEM 263 because he teaches into content from that class. Vederass enthusiasm is unmatched, and he truly believes that all of his students are capable of succeeding. TAs are brutal though.
Dr. Vederas is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Last term I dropped out of chem 261 by week 2 because I could not learn from a different professor. Vederas made this class interesting, easy to digest, and his exams were fair based on the questions he asked. The practice midterms were very representative, but no part marks.
Highlight of this class is his lectures! Interesting and very engaging. His notes are good, but I definitely recommend attending class. Practice questions are all out of the textbook. His exams are difficult but very similar to samples.
He seems to teach the class a little bit differently than most other profs at uofa. He gives no practice questions and the textbook ones assigned don't really apply. His tests however, are always similar to his practice tests and pretty specific to what you do in class so it's possible to do quite well. He's entertaining but it is a hard class.
Chem isn't my thing so I was terrified of Ochem due to all the bad experiences other people had but honestly this was my favourite chem class I've ever taken due to the professor. He was clear, genuine, passionate and had so many out of lecture resources like small videos on the lecture content to help us understand. 100% recommend this prof
He is great person, but his lectures do not make sense. You are given question periods a lot, but good luck unwinding the 100 reactions he uses in a sequence to explain 100 different concepts. He explains topic "A" very well, and topic "B" very well, but does he focus on the connection between A and B? Very little, which makes it very confusing.
He is OK, as far as organic chemistry professors go. His midterms and finals are a lot like the ones he has online, however, his lecture style is archeal and he only gives shallow explanations and expects students to fill in the gaps themselves. If you have to take organic chemistry, he is the best in the department, but still not great.
Dr. Vederas is in my opinion underrated. He does not beat around the bush with concepts and gives good and clear feedback in office hours. He sticks to the traditional note-taking strategy of writing on a whiteboard while still making notes accessible outside of class. Ultimately, he is a humorous, passionate, and respectable professor.
Organic chemistry is a jump for general chemistry. In Chem 10X you are used to your profs almost babying you and helping you out, and breaking each concept down. Chem 261 is not like that, however the way Vederas explains concepts makes sense once you review. At times, he may do extremely complicated steps that don't end up being on the exam.
Vederas is amazing and extremely passionate about ochem. Went into this class terrified and left with chem261 being my favourite class ever taken. He has a different teaching style than most (whiteboard+online posted notes after every class) and you need to keep up w both to do well. Finals/midterms formatted exactly like practice.100p recommend.
He does fun experiments where he lights stuff on fire which is very informative but also wastes more lecture time. He is old fashioned but in a good way. He is very kind and approachable.
Dr Vederas isnt bad, talks about random stuff during lecture, and lectures are primarily going through examples. He's a whiteboard type of guy and doesnt record his lectures. Hard to reach outside of class, doesnt allow emails abt course content, so office hours are a must. Exams are fair. Txtbk and Ochem Tutor (YouTube) will be your best friends.
Awesome guy. Even though he has a unique lecture style compared to many of my other professors, his charisma and love for the subject more than makes up for it! Exams are comprehensive but fair and he clearly outlines what will be on them.
Honest rating, compared to other profs he is the best one. But know what you are getting into. You cannot miss a class because he does not post his full notes online. Be ready to write for your life cause my hands fell off. Like the other reviews on him for 261, he goes slow in the beginning then he goes full god send in the last like 5 lectures.
If you keep up with the content then his lectures will make sense. I didn't keep up with the course, so I had to study like there was no tomorrow for the midterms and finals. Would have made my life easier to have kept up. Dr. Vederas is engaging, probably the best in ochem department, but his lectures are mostly based around giving examples.
Overall a funny guy, very passionate, and willing to answer any questions, and frequently stopped to ask the class if they had questions. His exams were generally fair and clearly outlined but there were a lot of memorization of little things.
Funny guy, exams are clearly outlined but when he says something is tested, you better believe him, even if it means little details, and random molecules.
Dr. Vederas is a great professor for Chem 261. A lot of information is covered, but he drops hints for what is on the exam. Practice tests are representative of the real exams. His teaching method works well for this class, and the demonstrations are useful for remembering concepts (and are super cool). Put in the work and you'll be rewarded.
Vederas is my favorite professor that I've had, His in class examples and fires make his class engaging and helped me realize my passion for chemistry. Try to attend every lecture for hints on exam questions, jokes, and him finding ever excuse to burn or explode something. Make sure you attend the last class for a surprise.
I haven't taken chem in years so I was STRESSED but Dr. Vederas made the class fun and engaging and I ended up loving 261. Works through a lot of examples, drops hints for exams and is an all around great lecturer (not to mention his fun fire + explosion demos). Go to lecture, do the practice and you'll do well! Could not recommend him more:)
Super great professor. Very intelligent man and has so many great stories to keep the class interested. The material in the course is "hard" but Professor Vederas provides all the information you need to understand the concepts at a good level. Reasonable and fair tests. Would love to have this professor again.
Professor Vederas makes this challenging course engaging with fun demos and plenty of examples. Attend lectures, use the free textbook, and try unstuck ai - it really helps with mastering the content. Tough but fair exams if you put in the work.
idk why this prof havee so much good rating, i know i sound like i didnt put any work in but I did!! I attend every lecture, spend hours go through notes he posted, I used to slay my Chem 101 and 102 but know im suffering and depressed. He yap alot during class, super disorganized with lecture, exam were harder than what he taught.everyone's upset
goes too fast and teaches stuff like we already know it. shows a lot of examples but never explains what it is. he writes on a whiteboard and his body blocks what he is writing so by the time he moves and you've copied what he wrote down he has another entire structure written. funny and knowledgeable, but if you have the choice, take another prof
I made an account just to say how much I loved Vederas as a prof. Overall great guy - it's obvious he cares about his students. He also has his own website with a bunch of resources available. The course material itself is hard and you will need to put in the work and ATTEND CLASS - but loved Vederas and would 100% take one of his classes again.
He's a wonderful lecturer, would highly recommend!
very kind and great guy, i just found his lectures hard to follow during the second half of the course. i find he speaks like we already know what hes talking about, which was kind of jarring. luckily he posts his notes on his websites w the videos on eclass! biggest thing is DO NOT FALL BEHIND !!
I found it hard to follow the lectures some of the time, partially because he often wrote in a faded marker. Otherwise he was a pretty decent lecturer, but I still found that I had to teach myself the material more than expected. Online notes, videos, and practice exams are provided. The final was very difficult so stay on top of your studies.
Best science prof I've had coming from a Kin student lol. Although he covers/writes stuff in class fast, he know what he was talking about it and his tests are very fair. The lab isn't that bad but does require a lot of time. Keep up with the content and follow the study guides he gives you and you'll be fine.
Exams were fair but his lectures seemed all over the place and it was hard to keep up. I liked that he posted very detailed notes after class though, they were soo helpful. He's probably one of the better Ochem profs at UofA. I also really liked the random experiments he did in class! So much fire and random stuff being passed around LOL
He was fun during lectures: he made jokes and did fun experiments. When it comes to the notes part, he does all his notes on the whiteboard and it can get hard to follow along because you need to get everything he writes down right then and there. Overall enjoyable class but be ready for those midterms bc that's all that will be holding up ur grade
Insanely Intelligent about many things, he loves sharing his knowledge with his students, who he truly cares about! He teaches exclusively on a whiteboard, so get a good spot in class. He delivers content at a good pace, rarely too much at once and enough time to digest everything. He delivers a difficult course in a very fun and interesting way!!
Had Dr. Vederas for C261 this semester, absolutely my favourite class I've taken. Going to the lectures is 100% necessary to not drown in the course, however he makes them so entertaining, comprehensive, and interesting that they're always worth going to. Exams are hard but very fair. Fantastic prof, hope I get to take some more classes with him.
I enjoyed Dr.Vederas' class this semester! He's extremely clear on how to succeed in the class. He's super positive and he shared a lot of knowledge and life lessons along the way which I always found interesting. I would highly suggest taking his class while he's still teaching - you won't regret it!
a great guy, always made lectures fun, i didn't love how he wrote on the whiteboard and didn't really have lecture slides but he posted notes of each lectures content afterwards. midterm 2 and the final were almost exactly like the practice, but he did throw in some new material. the course itself is tough so can't blame him
If you don't show up to class, you are cooked. Lecture hall was always packed because his teaching style is so disorganized that there are hardly any discernible topics/units. Lectures consist of only drawing compounds on the whiteboard so it's hard to make sense of anything.
One of the best Ochem prof! He wrote on the white board, so at times it got heard to see from the back. But he presented a lot of examples and it really got the concepts down. The midterms were fair and the final was pretty straight forward. The exams were similar if not the same as the practice exams, so just memorize the practice exams.
All of these ratings are lying to you! They tricked me too, on paper he seems like he'd be fit for his job (has a lot of degrees and experience at the University) but his class is so confusing. He only uses the whiteboard which is hard to see and his exams are so long and not multiple choice either. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
Nice guy and it seems like he's a good chemist, however his lectures are torturous and terrible. The only good thing about his teaching style is his website. Avoid at all costs.
He seems to be a fair guy and knows his stuff. But I think he would be better off teaching history than ochem. His notes are difficult to follow and teaches the material like you know everything. Probably the first and last time ill ever take this guy.
hes a chill guy but honestly not the best teacher. the practice exams are reflective of the actual exams which was fair. but you can survive by not going to class and learning the entire course on your own
Nice person & good chemist, but lectures extremely unorganized and borderline impossible to follow along. Lectures are pretty much just him drawing structures on the board with minimal writing to go along with it.
These people giving 1 stars just don't put in the work. If you just look over his notes after every class for 30 minutes and do the practice exams you can get 80+. He literally copies the true or false questions onto the exams, it literally cannot be easier. He does ramble on sometimes, but he teaches well and has his own videos for further review.
I enjoyed his teaching. he's very passionate about organic chem and is insanely smart
Lots of rambling in lectures, and trips up over complicated material relatively often. Passionate about organic chemistry, but not the best at conveying his knowledge. You might leave more confused than you went in, so make sure you're able to teach yourself.
Material itself is not difficult. But he teaches in a very unorganized manner and its unclear what he wants us to focus on. I've never left a single lecture having understood the material, and taught myself everything I knew. Mess of a class. Tho I respect Dr. Vederas, he seems like an insanely smart guy, his teaching is just not good.
