The guy is a mathematical genius, but gets annoyed at students for not understanding. 99% of chance you will need a tutor to pass his class with a good grade. General advise AVOID this guy.
If you look up the word arrogant, you will see a picture of him there! Avoid his class at all costs.
If you taking this professor you need money to afford a good tutor. He thinks he makes all these formulas up by him self. Drop while you can but if you cant definatly get an W. This is the best advice that can be given.
WOW.....what a jerk, excuse my language.I wonder where did he buy his diploma and fool us as a Math professor. This guy needs to go to mental hospital or something. We pay to go to school not to get abuse.Beware of this guy especially if you were minority.

I took his NET course. WORSE DECISION EVER! This guy expects you to know the math, even though its not taught to you anywhere, and he requires you to understand this maple software which is impossible. AVOID HIS COURSE AT ALL COSTS!
He is a math genius. He doesn't have manners as a professor. He doesn't respect students at all. He treats students poorly. One word "awful". One advice, "Don't take his class".
This guy is smart, but he is really arrogant. He act like one of those Vietnemese veterans. He is psychotic to be clear, and teaches like you are at his level.
He is the worse teacher in the whole planet.
Avoid his class. this guy is very rude and stupid. his HW is uselessly tedious. (excuse my langage)
he's crazy
verey hard and hard to be fallowed
If you see this guy, please, please drop it. He is terrible teacher i even seen. Every time i have to spend my whole day to do my HW by using the stupid Maple. (excuse my langage)
REALLY BAD TEACHER!! STAY AWAY!!!
people for your own goood. i dont care how bad u need this class, u will end up failing it. so drop it before you do!!!
NEVA TAKE HIM PLZZZZZZZ...FOR UR OWN SAKE....
Never take him. 90% that you will fail this class. If Math is you major, this class with 3 hours will cost you as much as 8 hours. Useless and time consuming HW. MAPLE is a major requirement for his class.
IF you want to commit suiside, take him. This jerk is NOT a professional teacher. He does not teach at all. I don't understand how he get the job.
HORRIBLE! simply horrendous! Do not take it with him! My afther is having to teach me the ENTIRE course in the next week before the final. His homeowrks will take you 5 Hrs + and chances are youll not even get a 5/10. WOrst teacher I've ever had, and will be THRILLED with a B-! HORRIBLE!
If you Do Not want to learn, have a good grade, have a good time, live,be respected, have more time with your friends, families, work,or playing, have fair homework,...In short,if you do not want to enjoy your life, then take him.I am sure that he will make your life very horible. You won't enjoy it at all.
Do not take him if you want easy A without any serious work.He is a great teacher if you want a real knowledge of calculus not the grade.I do not recommend him for the folks who have any thing less than A in his high school algebra. You should be master of basic algebra to not end up like other guys.
Guys, DONT TAKE HIM, HORRIBLE 'teacher'. I can't call him a teacher, b/c he doesnt really teach. MAPLE IS an extremely hard soft. to master, and you need to MASTER it to get anywhere in his class. Waste of time..

this guy doesn't know how to teach i haven't learned anything this entire semester and he uses way to much maple in this class which gets boring
He is very condescending and rude. Dont expect much help from him if you have questions to ask him.
don't take him i haven't learned anything this entire semester yes he is easy but u don't learn anything so being easy does not help
he is not a bad guy. Some of the material is difficult to understand and he doesn't doa great job on making it clearer. If you can't use MAPLE or other Mathy software DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! I got and A, but I had to study a lot(And I usually just look at my notes) before the final and couldn't have done it with out the computer.
If u follow from the begining u might understand him. But since all of his tests are online and there no deadlines, it makes it hard to follow. another tip if you take his class, get maple from the begining and learn it, without it u will probebly fail!!!
Well, I do not know what to suggest. Maple is helpful, but you have to learn basic commands, and that takes some time. Many of us just do not have any time to waste in a computer lab. Professor is impatient and sometimes rude. Sorry, professor, but you scare you students to death. Teaching is not supposed to be like that.
I believe it was the first day of class when, open hearing the role that Maple would play in the class, a student said something to the effect of, "We won't be learning anything if we just enter values into a program and see it on a screen." Might be playing mind games to see our computer-dependency. Class won't help as it is often screen watching.
This guys is this worst Professor EVER if you want to understand what the Professor is teaching you..do not take this man. All his problems become your problems....honestly this is the most arrogant Professor I've taken in Brooklyn! STAY AWAY!!!
If you are interested in a practical and structured approach to learning math, DO NOT TAKE HIM!! Knowledge of Maple ( computer programming software ) is a requirement for passing the course , without it you will certainly fail. However, if you choose to take him , GOOD LUCK TO YOU.

very dull teacher...i would advise to stay away...he does not let you understand what is going on and just expects you to know what he is talking about...also very rude
The worst part of the class is the dead silence when he's looking up a maple command. As to Maple, with the newer versions there is almost no syntax learning. You are expected to know the material from previous math classes. The flexibility of tests is a good feature. Don’t ask him questions that make you look like you were not paying attention.
The amount of hatred I had for him could go on forever. He WANTS you to fail and he failed more than half the class! MAPLE sucks because he is never clear about it and will not explain anything. He will tell you that you dont belong in this class over and over. STAY AWAY from him he is the devil! He is a waste of life!!!
he is the worst prof. ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if ur movin on to higher math course like calcalus II and so on then he is not for u, but if u can not understand calcalus, then he is the perfect match. maple makes it so much easier. do not listen to everyone that complains aout him. Velling is a great professor. and maple is basically a legit program. jus go to class everyday and ur guarenteed a
Only suitable for people who knows math and do nothing to get an easy A. No need to come to class everyday just to make sure finishing all the evaluations on time. Remember all the stuff from math B and u will be fine.
Treats the class as if everyone is going to graduate school for math. Gives HW the size of term projects that take weeks for even a group to do, VERY UNCLEAR ESPECIALLY about what he wants, not rational. He cares about grammer/neatness in maple more then the actual work. Easy to pass because everyone does so bad. You learn nothing worst prof in BC.
He's underrated. The people that rate him low obviously did not take the same course with a different professor before and failed it. He's not a friendly professor, but he gives you assignments that you can take as many times as you want till you get the grade that you want. Also he lets you use Maple during the exam.
RUNNNNN...I am not kidding...
Took Advanced Calculus with this jerk. Horrible lectures, no teaching plan. Gets lost with thoughts. Very arrogant to students. Expects you to be an expert both in Math and Maple. Doesn't grade or explain homework. You can't learn under this conditions. I can't believe he gets paid for passing 5 out of ~30 people. I lost time and money.
Velling's not bad at all. He's enthusiastic and very polite and accomodating when students ask questions- even if they're slackers like me and should have known the answers to the questions. I would definately take him again.
He insists on doing problems in the most difficult way possible and it's tough to follow him because he jumps steps (while solving) that are so obvious to him. He is willing to help but that doesn't help much because his tests are really hard.
extremely hard, doesnt explain the information well, expects you to learn it on your own.
This professor knows alot about math but has no delivery at all. He is a horrible teacher and one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is not clear, very useless and talks down to students alot. Very irratating professor and I strongly suggest to KEEP AWAY. DO NOT TAKE HIM . WORST PROFESSOR IN BC. YOU WILL WANT TO KILL YOURSELF AND REGRET IT
I had Prof Velling for Prob/Stats and Adv Calc. His knowledge of the material was outstanding and his accessibility was excellent. His grading was more than fair. He offered a drop exam/assignment. He even provided a list of questions that were on the exams. For all the complaints, I remember there were a lot of voluntarily empty seats in class.
I took Advanced Calculus w/ Prof. Velling. This is a tough class, regardless of who is teaching it. I felt Prof. Velling was clear and precise when discussing the material. He was receptive and attentive to questions about the material. True, he's not going to hold your hand for you, but at this level, you have to start learning on your own.
This professor does not have a grading criteria, provides no guidelines to his expectations and worst of all, does not seem to have any interest in teaching. He is much too self-absorbed and disrespectful. He holds one of the highest student drop out rates.
Don't take him!!!!!!! Run as from hell
Most disrespectful teacher I have ever had in Brooklyn College. Knows alot about the subject but does not know how to talk to individuals or how to teach. Expects students to come in on the first day knowing all the material and doesnt explain sophisticated material. As college students we come to learn with a professor and not to be talked down to
I like the guy. He's funny.
Calculus is hard, but if you aren't interested in pursuing derivatives and integrals as a life passion then this guy is your man. Just learn the concepts and forget the algebra. He lets you use a computer application to do all the algrebra automatically! Don't get scared when he goes over problems in class, just let it go over your head... MAPLE!
Professor Velling teaches calculus 1 with Maple software instead of a textbook.
STAY AWAY
This guy is the man! He gave me a free book to read. He is extremely intelligible and knows his subject well. What I mean by that is that he is an expert on the material but he will make some minor arithmetic errors once in a while. But that really doesn't matter because he is here to teach you the concepts. The arithmetic is left for robots(maple)
Makes you understand the meaning of what a graph represents.
Finally I understand how can we use probability and statistic in real world. Prof. Velling makes the class interesting by doing a lot of real-life examples. He uses Maple and Excel a lot and I personally like it.
Excellent teacher! Grades fairly and explains the material well. Sets a high but reachable bar. Is approachable and gracious when answering questions -- but remember, that as a student, you need to take initiative and ask if you do not understand. Has given me a strong foundation for graduate study!
real relaxing class. there are no midterms. make sure u do good on the online evaluations and cram for final if you have to. he is very willing to help and a really funny guy.
Professor was very helpful, easy to follow and understand
I took this professor for precal. He is the WORST! Stay away. He thinks his students are unintelligent and he has a bad attitude. I have no respect for him as a teacher or individual. He needs to learn to be a professional and leave his life at the door. I regreat his birth. I did well in the class because my mother is a math teacher butDO NOT TAKE
I'm baffled by the good ratings. my entire class wishes they never heard of him. He's not helpful, he's so self absorbed that he doesn't have a clue that the entire class knows nothing, or he just doesn't care. He will make you buy an unedited text he wrote and is completely useless. He lets u use maple but its no help if u haven't learnt anything
Velling is the worst professor I have ever had, hands down. This entire semester was a big waste of time, as I have learned nothing. The whole class boils down to a final that he does not prepare you for, and everyone does poorly on.
Stay a way!! i took precal, cal1 and 2 and got A's in all of them. he doesnt teach at all. his exam is hrad nothing like his evaluations. inlove with himself and crazy. he think that his student are stupid. i really dont know why he is teaching?! stay a way at any cost !!!! dont do it to yourself its not worth it!!!
Professor Velling was very helpful and understanding. He teaches calculus 2 with Maple 13 software and shows you how to use it. If you do not understand a topic...all you have to do is ask and he will help. He is very intelligent and expects a lot from his students. I would recommend him to anyone who is willing to learn.
Velling is a mess. His class appears easy because you are allowed to use Maple 13 which does all the derivatives and integration for you. You can take all of his exams over until you pass, but when you get to the final.. YOU ARE DONE!!! my whole class practically flunked and then we had to all take a make up final.. nice guy though, but cant teach
DON'T TAKE HIM! Guys, I am serious! 3 weeks left before the final and i dropped it with W, because my GPA is not worth it!!!! All semester you do nothing except submitting his evaluations by maple. Maple is disgusting, it does not recognize multiplication signs etc. even if you do all correct, your submission doesn't go through and Velling does not
I have all good grades precal A, cal1 A, and only his cal 2, i decided to drop with W, because I don't want C. I want to apply for medical school and now I just lost time and money. For god's sake, don't do it to youself! it's not worth it! He is a DEVIL!
We still havent gotten any marks yet so its a little premature-- but so far hes been very fair. The maple text that he usees for his class may seem a little intimidating at first but his worksheets make it really easy to practice-- I hope hes as good a guy as i think he is because i havent gotten my grade back yet
His character, being self-absorbed, self-righteous, and at times Bateman-like erratic, is key to understanding his poorly executed lectures. He is the reason why he the class does not respond. You will find fewer professors who are as ineffective and wildly erratic as this man. Consider him a worthy study of what failure at all levels can be.
Excellent professor with clear explanations. He knows his math (PhD from Stanford University) and made Calc3 interesting. He's helpful at answering our questions and understanding of the material. A fair grader. His textbook, MathLynx is interactive (important because Calc3 is 3D). Maple was extremely helpful, better than a calculator.
I haven't seen Calculus in about 12 years. Professor Velling's excellent use of his interactive textbook with the Maple 14 calculator software brought it all back for me in his Calc 2 course. His notes were extensive and easy to revisit for clarification of the topics. His course put me on track for my Master's and I am eternally grateful.
He got the message this semester. His final was completely manageable. As other commentators have remarked: "Just study the practice exams"However, it was extremely stressful having only one exam at the end of the semester. His personality is a bit challenging, but Hey! he's a math dude, not a therapist. Get a thicker hide sissies!
simply one of the best math professors i've had ever. The presentation of the material was very clear. The use of his interactive computer text called MAPLE gets rid of most of the gruntwork and room for error. it allowed me to focus on calculus and not elementary math, which is what most people need to order to get a good foundation of calculus.
he was helpful a little by the finals but the course was a nightmare. he has no interest in teaching and he talks to himself the whole time and if you ask a question you feel like 2 cents. he is useless- just use maple help for every turn and save yourself from listening to him.
This professor's lectures are near incomprehensible. He is heavy on jargon and assumes that his students are as comfortable with the subject as he is. Nevertheless, his use of MAPLE makes the class easy, and you don't have to show up, just take the final. He tells you exactly what will be on the final, so the test is easy, no surprises. Easy A
There was only one test in this class which was very easy, as well as several easy online assignments, easy A. As for his teaching, he's not as bad as some claim, but he certainly can be hard to understand at times. For the text, he uses his own book MathLynx, which isn't very good. I'd supplement it with Stewart or Paul's Online Math Notes.
Professor Velling was very helpful. He was always welcoming of my questions and he helped me understand what I did not understand. Through this I have achieved a good grade. Not a lot of professors would actually take extra time and efforts to help a student with class materials during their office hours. I think he is an excellent professor.
Velling created tons of interactive practice sessions and an interactive text to help us get through tough material. But you gotta work! No joke! The guy tells it like it is & doesn't care if you attend as long as you gitter done. Don't expect your feelings to be handled with kid gloves.
Engaging. Well written text on CD saved me $200. Plus it is interactive - I could play with examples and get immediate feedback on practice problems. Not some overweight static money sink like Stewart's text. Prof explained the math using tangible examples. Practice problems - a great chance to see if I could reproduce lecture content.
The interactive software is very thorough and lets you know how well you know the material. There are 6 online assignments that are exactly like the interactive practice problems (each can be redone once) given biweekly that make up 1/2 your grade and the final is the other half. Easy if you keep up to date with the material and study for the final
He created a Mathlynx CD compatible to maple that spared us from spending a lot of money on texbook. Also, the texts on the CD are well written and clear and complemented with interactive software that demystify the 3D world math, therefore helps with understanding. The best part is with the CDs, we can generate as many practice problems.
Prof. Velling loves to tell jokes. He's a good guy and a straight shooter. You'll need to learn how to use Maple and utilize his HW delivery systems, etc, but if you play ball you'll learn the material and should do well. I completely phoned it in and still managed to make my grade and learn (enough) calculus, which I attribute to his abilities.
Pretty much an average professor. Has a fair grading policy, but hesitates to help students and makes everything easy look hard in lectures. You don't have to show up/be on time to class. Basically, take him if you're able to do everything on your own.
Good Professor. Explains everything clear. You dont have to buy a book, only subscription to his mathlynx, which is only 50 bucks. If you like math you ll pass his class easy. If you dont like it, you will still pass it with minimal efforts.
Horrible professor 60% homework 40% final or if you do bad on h.w then 50% final and 50% h.w. Uses math lynx which is confusing and abstract. Will talk about stuff not important to class will end up not finishing by end of class and in the end rush thru and expect you to know everything on your own. Avoid if possible.
On target. I had to do some reading because there is a lot of stuff in the class, but the prof was always available on request and tried to make sure I knew what was going on. Online text has randomly generated problems with huge variation - they are hard but I feel like I know something when I understand how to deal with them.
Take him great professor!!
This class was very challenging and difficult. Professor Velling's assignments really make you work for your grade, as they are significantly harder than the assignments in the textbook that he used for the class. Take him if you genuinely want to learn, but know that there is a heavy time commitment involved.
He is the WORST math teacher I have ever come across. He prefers an online textbook which doesn't explain the material clearly at all. Furthermore, he doesn't give exams during the semester- the final is the only test you'll take in his class. I would never recommend him to anyone.
Amazing Professor, he provides you will all the information necessary to pass this class.
26 homework evaluations and one final. Even if you complete all of the homework you can still fail the class if you do horribly (below 50) on the final. Funny but tough professor. The homework is online. You don't need to buy an expensive textbook just buy a subscription to his Mathlynx. Online homework is slightly different from the final.
Avoid Avoid Avoid This is by far the worst professor you will ever come across. He talks way too much about non math topics because he loves to hear himself talk, the homework are done on a website which is crappy and there is one test. He doesn't check students work, just goes by what the website gives him. Awful math professor. Run
Okay, I enrolled knowing his bad reviews.. thought I could get past it for the credits. NO! First 10 mins of our first class I knew I'm dropping it. He talks too much about irrelevant things and his system is confusing. Wants you to buy and learn a huge program just to learn e.t yourself. His was the 1st class I ever dropped! Stay away if you can.
I took his class just to review calc 1 before going to calc 2 turns out I wasted my time. Ni__a focused on this bulls_it mathlynx. Son, this cra__er is so fu__ing unhelpful- teach yourself before coming to class.
He is highly knowledgeable person. He knows the stuff very well. There is only one final and 26 assignments. No mid-terms. Attendance does not matter.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! Very rude, unhelpful, doesn't explain anything. he just does a math problem & expects u to know how to do it. I've never got anything lower than a B and received a D+ & now I have to retake precalc for a better grade in order to take calc. there's only one exam & if u do poorly that's pretty much it for u. if your smart avoid!!
Don't do it to yourself.... I had straight A's and a few B's before taking Velling now i have one C.... RUN
Had perfect score going in to final. Got B, maybe B-, on final & A- in class. Just spent half-hour with prof reviewing this. He was generous with his time, said I could make photocopy of my final, and showed me where he was actually pretty generous in grading too. I could have got a B+ but he graded me up.
Prof. Velling is straight to the point, and the class is what you make of it. Work hard, reach out for help and u'll pass. He gives u plenty of chance to get a good grade on assignments. So If u are lazy, u'll fail like in any other class. We use a text called Mathlynx wich is only $50 for a subscription (compared to $180 books).Office hours help!
I took the calculus 1 class with professor Velling in the Fall 2014 semester and I really enjoyed the class. No regular textbook needed-need a subscription to an online text where precalc is also covered. Homework you do online and the homework grades are 50-60% of the grade!!! You will learn much, just listen to him and ask him-he'll always help.
If you're interested in learning math, then I advise against taking him. Math shouldn't be done via online virtual software. It defeats the purpose of theoretically understanding mathematical properties. No class exams, aside from the departmental final, so you're unsure of how well you'll do. He tries to prove his ability to solve, & not teach.
Online text as reference & online HW. No prob - I go online for all sorts of stuff that used to be hardcopy. HW system bit buggy, but infinite practice & much better than one-word solutions in back of book w no idea how to get there. Lectures usual mix of theory & practice on board. Prof generous when f2f, but not so patient.
If you think that you are good at math, you will have great time in his class. Uses an online homework website called Mathlynx. Mathlynx is very efficient website with an easy platform. A really funny professor. He keeps you awake during the whole lecture with his jokes.
Prof knows math and tells it straight. Learned a lot. But had to work HARD.
Prof says that most issues are dong arithmetic. That totally describes my difficulty in the class. The concepts are not that difficult - and prof explains them well.
One of the most amazing professors I took. Hilarious dude, no examsquizzes but the final! No need for a calculator, you get to use an incredible program that overpowers crappy calculators tenfold. All assignments and information is online! This guy is awesome! Knows his stuff like a grand sensei. Very lenient and cool. Do the assignments and own!
Professor Velling teaches realworld components of mathematics and technology. Uses MathLynx, which serves as a great indicator of whether you are solid on the material or not. He gives you whatever tools you need to do well in his class; he allows for redoals on HW,never even needed it and MAPLE 18. First time taking and would take again. MATH-GURU!
Loved this professor. Be prepared to work for you grade. He uses a very helpful online text that helps you practice everything you need to do. Explains clearly though sometimes quickly. Make sure to ask questions that pertain to the class, not to yourself.
Got a C. Had a B going in to final. Easy to blame prof, but he laid it all out. MathLynx gave me practice & feedback. I just choked. Prof held lots of office hours & answered questions in useful manner.
Professor Velling is an incredible professor. I failed his class, but it was my own fault. His semester breaks down into two parts. The homework you do all semester, and a final. The final is an incredibly difficult challenge and is one of the hardest things I've ever done. By the end of this class you will know Calculus.
Attendance is optional but honestly if you come to class then you will know how to do the homework assignments which will help you boost your grade in the end! You'll love the course if you understand sarcasm and have a sense of humor. It's always easier to learn when you can laugh a little than sit in class and be bored to death in my opinion!
Explains material in a clear, applicable manner; does his best not to make statistics abstract. He will eagerly answer questions during class, and genuinely wants the students to do well. See him during office hours, talk to him after class; getting to know him really helps. Good sense of dry humor, but don't piss him off during class. Recommended.
professor velling does not know how to teach. he makes us buy a subscription to his crappy website where he assigns homework. the homeworks are easy but he doesn't teach anything in class so the homeworks are extremely difficult.
Best professor to take for MATH2501. Explains course material extremely well, in a clear and thorough manner. Just attend his class, pay attention to the lecture, do the assigned homework and you'll pass without any issues. Recommended!
Prof cares about success of his students & puts in time & energy to bring it out. Interactive text works fine & allowed me to practice w feedback. Dry sense of humor not for easily offended.
The Mathlynx site is MUCH CHEAPER than a textbook. Chapters are very organized, so you know exactly what will be happening in class next. Being able to use Maple on exams takes silly errors and excruciating algebra out of the equation, it is a life-saver. You cannot just follow along in class, you have to PRACTICE on your own to do well in math.
Velling's not easy, but he knows his stuff - 2501 requires you to know Calc 2 (integration with ln()/log()) and there's mental calisthenics involved. That being said, he does teach useful stuff, and he spares you from repetitive math (use Maple or Libreoffice for answers). That being said, you would have to browse mathlynx and do the problems.
You will expect homework from either mathlynx or libreoffice (mostly the basic but need to know the commands) in his class. We don't need to take class notes, however, you need to put some comments on his lectures note due to the fact that you going to have hard time reading his hand writing. expect the final to be 50% and rest is assignment
It's already the second week and I'm in deep regret. Well educated but the homework is complex and he hasn't defined ANYTHING. I have been self teaching for the past week! His "teaching" is horrific and MathLynx doesn't ease this. Who teaches math using software?! AVOID. Biggest mistake I've made in my academic career. We are not PhD students!
Give only 1 test so you won't know how your doing overall before you take the final and fail. He Makes you subscribe to online e-books that expire in a few months and teaches using software. Not to mention he constantly shows up late 10-30 mins each day. Spends time talking about his bad days. His teaching style is terrible in my opinion.
Took this professor for Calc 1 & 2. His final and a midterm worth 70-80% of ur grade together w/ no curve whatsoever. It was a mistake taking Calc 2 w him, as I had to consistently self teach myself. Unless you are truly desperate, try to avoid bc you will end up working 3x as hard as you need to, and this is coming from an engineering student.
He uses Softwares like libreoffice that are practical in the real world applications and most hw are done using his website. One downside is that there are limited explanation on the example so pay attention when he goes through the hw in class. Exam questions are almost the same as hw. Best math professor I have had so far in BC.
Eh,He is not the worse, however, he is one tough cookie. He goes pretty fast. Very outspoken. Only Midterm and final, which determines your final grade. I would recommend a different professor because it was a challenge to focus & understand & I am a math lover. I could imagine those who have trouble w/ math. Not clear and makes things complicated.
I enjoyed class with prof velling, while it took a while to get used to using maple and the online text, once i got used to it, it worked for me. Homework assignments count towards your grade, there is only 1 midterm and a final to determine your grade. While the course itself is hard, the professor makes it simpler to understand. I Recommend him!!
Professor explains everything you need to know to get a good grade and understand where and why you need to know the basics about probability and statistics. Don't skip a class, cause you will have troubles with HW and the book does not explain everything. I enjoyed the class and his final was a masterpiece that puts all material together. I recomm
I like him even though lots of my classmates dropping after the midterm. Yes, he is a tough professor but he is a great professor. Calculus is not a easy thing to learn, he explains clearly in class. His assignment is similar to the midterm and final. Go to his office hours, and he is the person who welcome you and guide you carefully.
I took his class last semester and he is an amazing professor. His homeworks are very helpful, midterm was hard but Final was much more easier. He is very helpful and gives students good feedbacks. He knows how to communicate with students, especially non native speakers. if you work hard and do your best you ll get a good grade.
Professor Velling is a smart guy. In his lectures, he makes jokes and tells the students of how math can be applied to various fields. The only thing I didn't like was the grading in the class which is determined by homework, midterm and final (about 33% each). So if you mess up on the midterm or final, it is hard to reel yourself back from that.
He does not listen to your crap. He just teaches in his own way, whether you learn or not. Doesnt care about your difficulties. If you ever want to talk to him, make sure to prepare your evidences as you would want to prepare for a court hearing, otherwise you will be ignored, especially with the website he uses for hw, because it's full of error.
Expect to know excel formulas because all his homework and exams requires this knowledge. Clear instruction on his side whether you hear it or not. Very self centered and makes you feel like a psychopath. Don't expect to learn anything unless you're taking his class to learn how to follow instruction.
Possibly the worst professor I've ever encountered. He's smart but he should not be teaching. He knows how to speak out his knowledge but he can't make you understand the material. Military like instruction, consisting of a LOT of yelling in your face.
I won't recommend at all he's by far one of the worst professor i have ever taken, all the work is done in excel sheets with Libre Office , his final is take home but he's not one bit easy, he cant teach at all and has a rude attitude. Homeworks are given every week and small errors are harshly graded bottom line don't take him
one of the funniest professors i ever had.. he is extremely fare with his marking great teacher.. highly recommend him raminfar
Very clear and gives examples illustrating what he wants us to work on. E-text should not be considered more than a supporting reference to lecture. I have plenty of opportunity to experiment. Prof very responsive to student needs.
Amazing professor. He is the only one in brooklyn college who really tries to help you. Math is hard everyone who gave him a bad review it's because they're not good at math . He came to class an extra day just because so he can help us with any questions we had about the final. amazing highly recommend
Really funny professor and explains things well. the textbook could use some work. Definitely one of the better professors I had in BC
He is a grade A teacher. He teaches well, he puts a lot into the course, and tries really hard to make sure his students understand the subject. You cant be bitter if you fail the class without trying. It is a math class. He is a truly great mentor and a genius when it comes to the subject. He is amazing at explaining some really complex topics.
So, what i can say about this professor? He is pretty good man, also his funny "dude". However, he requires a lot. If you want free credit, this class not for you. This class (math 1011) with this professor for people who are good in math. Students must to pass a midterm (not easy )and final ( i passed it , and it was easier than midterm) .
He's a great, funny and caring (most of the time) professor. His lectures are great, he goes into detail with every topic doing various examples (similar to the homework) explaining how its done. His homework is fair you got a week to do it, as for exams they aren't bad at all, he goes over all topics on them, just be sure to study to pass.
Took Professor Velling for calc 1, great all around professor. Do his weekly homeworks online and you'll be well prepared for the midterm and final. He is funny, class is usually pretty stimulating. Not an easy A, but put in the effort and you will do just fine.
he teaches math in a computer lab (like seriously?!). He writes on a computer (which wastes so much time). Uses apps (e.g maple) in class to solve his questions. I tried my best to learn from what he teaches but the fact is that he doesn't teach anything. I have an A in pre-cal and cal 1 and I am most likely failing this class. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!
Pt1: He really knows his math, i was actually impressed with that, it's just the reason for all the terrible reviews is 1) calculus 2 is a hard class nothing can really stop that. and 2) he teaches in a way that is very not user friendly for people who aren't math oriented. He's a good guy and willing to help, so just ask for help when you need it!
Pt2: He teaches linear algebra differently from others, at least thats what youtube showed me, , he goes into extreme detail on all the subjects but its hard to keep with it, overall the course is quite easy if you are good at problem solving, for linear algebra and calc 2 hes a hard grader, but if you put in work you can get an A, I was able to!
he's a nightmare!!
Prof. Velling is a great guy, just a bad professor. He uses Mathlynx and Maple which should not be a way to learn math. He has office hours, but rarely helps the student if they come to ask. If you like Mathlynx and Maple then take him at your discretion. He also has a bad rep in the tutor center for being unorthodox.
Doesnt answer questions and talks to you like youre retarded
Taking this professor implies you want to learn math on your own. He use the website Mathlynx to assign homework, which you have to pay $60 for a semester. However, this website is the worst, slow respond, no show work.
if you do the practice tests you will pass. He's a very nice professor that wants his students to pass and if you do the assignments and read the text you will pass
Sat in this class everyday wondering wtf was going on. Im just a brown boy trying to get an Edumacation. Least this professor could do was actually teach me. No offense but even the notes he posted online weren't clear enough to follow when I attempted to teach myself.
I think he is a great professor. He has two grading systems, one that is test heavy and the other is less test heavy. So if you do all hw and dont do too well on the tests no worries the less test heavy grading criteria will be of use to you. One thing i have to stress is do your hw's becuase they will help your grade immensely in this class.
One of the best professors I ever had
Very bad vibes!! annoying with all the extra homework. Dosent help at all. STUCKUP
The professor is one of the worst I have ever taken. I do not understand what is up with his ego. He makes you feel horrible about yourself and does not care about how you feel. If you take him then be prepared to work and not learn because that's what happened to me. Do yourself a solid and avoid him like COVID 19 seriously! No joke!
DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU LIKE TO LEARN THROUGH A COMPUTER SOFTWARE (MAPLE) AND MATHLYX!
Plz dont, I mean it. He is really boring and can put u to sleep within minutes. Doesnt even try to dumb the math down for students and straight up just throws the work at us. You will spend the whole semester doing the damn HWs that arent even worth a lot. Final is 40% no curve if u wanna punish yourself, take him... hes great at torturing.
He is nice, but you don't really learn. He uses a software called Maple. There are weekly homework assignments on MyOpenMath. Honestly, I barely learned anything this semester, he spends 40 minutes on 1 question and drags it. He makes it more confusing. One midterm and then the final exam. Harsh grader, the feedback is not helpful at all.
Do not take him!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything is online, even when you go to school in person. You have to pay for an online subscription on his website which includes his textbook and homework (which are graded). The only good thing is that he will grade you depending on the highest scores.
His tests are very hard. Homeworks are easy. Does not teach well at all. Got an A in the class not sure how. But easy grader.
Overall I'd say he is a good teacher. He can occasionally get caught up in relatively unimportant details. He uses a software called maple, and he dedicates a non-negligible amount of time to interacting with and formatting the software. Other than that, all g.
You will spend the majority of your time teaching yourself the material. The lectures are just a waste of time you will more likely be confused 5 min into the lesson. You use a useless software called maple and assignments are on myopenmath. Hw due every sunday, one midterm, and a final. I would stay away at all cost if you value ur gpa.
The absolute worst professor in history. Never helps with any problems you may have, is rude, and does not care to properly teach a class. He will simply explain a bunch of things and expect everyone to instantly understand what hes saying. He is so bad do not take him at all.
Please stay away from him! I literally mean it. When I read his reviews, I thought students are lying. He is so rude, never cares for your problems. Not tolerate and so selfish. Gives a lot of hw and difficult tests. Stay away at all costs if you care for your gpa. I had a 4.0 gpa and he ruined it. I wish I never choose him, my biggest mistake.
Bugs and unclear wording of HW, if you address anything in class saying that his ways is unfair he will ignore you or reply rudely. No curve, points taken off the smallest thing on hw AND exams. He's also a liar. Tells you something in class, then next time it doesn't count. It felt like he was trying his best to fail every student. Disgusted.
Lectures are somewhat confusing, his lectures are just him typing notes on a program called Maple. Gives homework every week, either MyOpenMath or a spreadsheet. Mistakes were common in the given examples of the MyOpenMath homework, and there was one homework where the entire class had to redo because of a mistake that he made in the questions.
Please if you read this, stay away from him! He is the worst professor ever! I have never met such a rude and uncaring professor in my life! He rudely replies to your answers, his explanations are vague and uses a software called Maple. It will give you the most stressful and uncomfortable moments of your life. Harsh grader and lecture heavy!
