Good, but fast, lecturer;voluminous information to absorb; test questions very difficult
No Comments
Looks like Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory all grown up. Great teacher! Loves to draw the reflec arc...over and over...but very informative.
Incredibly difficult information- and lots of it for just one exam. He's very knowlegeable about the topic, but it seems that he expects us to just absorb it as fast as he does. Nice person and willing to help- just seems to expect beyond undergrad devotion to the class.
He is a good teacher, but he draws a lot of pictures that aren't on the test. Make sure you listen to what he is saying, not what he is drawing.
Great teacher
Great teacher - reminds me of Einstein
This teacher teaches bs 300, and the way he presents information, made this the most difficult class i took at csu! covers alot of information in short periods of time, if you miss class, you are screwed! tests are nearly impossible!
Extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He covers a lot every day because there is so much to get through. If you keep up and read notes and do the objectives he posts online before the test, the tests are no problem. Makes learning fun-good story teller. Buy the old tests because there are a lot of the same questions.
Fabulous. Great enthusiasm. Go to class. Tests are from notes.
Great prof- wild hair
Great Teacher! He knows a lot of information and is excited to teach it to you. He goes through a lot of information during every class so DON"T miss class and be ready to write nonstop for 50 minutes. Whenever he switches colors when he is drawing so does everyone in the class and hearing 300 people click their pen over and over again is annoying!
Awesome professor - Lectures are very detailed but interesting. Take notes and study old exams. They will help prepare you for his tests. Make sure you know concepts and aren't just memorizing facts.
Dr. Walrond is a lot of fun, and he's enthusiastic, but his teaching style absolutely did not work for me. I felt that the material he covered in lecture did not appear on the exams, and the textbook he wrote is filled with typos and broken links. I honestly felt that the only way to pass his exams was to memorize answers from previous exams. :(
Awesome Profesor, he really helped you out when needed, and preps you very well for HEX403. I found the TA slides were really helpful for the exams.
He's a great teacher, but his tests are incredibly hard. He is so detailed. Make sure you understand everything.
This professor is very interesting. He knows the material he teaches as if he is speaking about his own family; however expects you to knwo the same. His exams are very difficult, I am a liscensed Paramedic and still find them very challanging. I know the material, however he words his questions as if to trick you to see if you truly understand.
He is definitely the best professor I have had at CSU. He is enthusiastic and teaches in a way that you truly understand the material. You need to put effort into the class, but with a little work, an A is very easy to obtain.
Awesome teacher, tough class. If you miss lecture make them up online and you'll do fine. Make sure you study and grab those extra credit points that are available, missed an A by FOUR POINTS!
Really interesting professor to listen to. I actually rarely attended class (because of work). Just watched his videos and got a B+. Still, you have to work hard!!! I did find his tests poorly constructed. Just my opinion, but they didn't seem to correspond with reviews very well.
Walrond was my favorite teacher at CSU! He was awesome!! Hard but you learn a ton!
Great class, super hard, but very clear and interesting!
Probably one of the most difficult classes at CSU, however walrond makes it as bearable as possible. Definitely requires a lot of outside class time. His test questions are tricky, but doable.
Awesome lectures. very engaging and you learn a lot. I LOVE that he didn't just flip through powerpoints. not easy, but not hard so long so you pay attention and take good notes.
Walrond is a great professor and is a great lecturer, I have never found myself bored in his class. You need to take good notes for this class and make sure you attend class or watch the online lecture videos that he posts.
Dr. Walrond is SUPER CLEAR. All you have to do is listen to his lectures carefully and review briefly before tests and the A is yours. He is def one of my favorite teachers just because he's so smart. he also loves to teach. his methods of communication are interesting and original and helps students connect with the material.BMS300 is not that hard
Best teacher at CSU! He explains everything extremely well and is really funny too. As long as you pay attention, it is easy to get an A in this class.
GREATEST PROFESSOR AT CSU. VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PROFESSIONAL. AGE HAS NOT STOPPED HIM FROM BEING SASSY AND A FUN GUY. GREAT TEACHER!
The material in BMS is hard enough.... HE CANNOT WRITE A TEST. If you cannot write a test you should not be teaching such a difficult class, let alone teaching at all. When a test questions asks: What does ______do to the regulating hormones when _____ and ______? It doesn't matter how much you know the material...you're going to fail either way
Walrond is incredibly helpful & knowledgable. His teaching style worked well for me-he writes everything on the board as he goes through it. Material is covered quickly. It can be difficult to decipher his writing, but he'll clarify. Test ?'s have good answers & BETTER answers which sucks. Don't worry about every TINY detail, just know your stuff.
Great teacher; tests are very hard. Only reason he didn't get 5 for clarity was because sometimes objects in his drawings look too similar. I love that he records his lectures.
Dr. Walrond is the BEST teacher at CSU. Hands down. He is extremely enthusiastic about the material in this class, and is more knowledgable about class material than any other professor I have ever met. Awesome, interesting, and worth while class to take. Having physiology with John was one of the greatest experiences of my life!
Walrond is the best professor I have ever had! He made me remember why I was a bio major in the first place. I will take as many classes as I can with him. He cares about the class he is teaching and it's evident in his teaching style. It's a lot of work but it isn't hard if you try.
This class is extremely hard. I've been putting in more hours outside of class with studying, getting a tutor, and online tutorials, and I still can't seem to get a C on an exam. His tests are almost made for someone to fail. He knows his stuff and expects everyone to too. Not an easy class!
Dr. Walrond is by far the best prof I have ever had! That says a lot since I have been in school for 10 semesters!I just love him! He is an extremely intelligent, wise man and if you like biology you will LOVE this class! Just make sure to NEVER fall behind! His tests are fair - be sure to study hard! Use your outside resources, including him!
Great professor. I would definitely recommend reading the e-book religiously, as his teaching overlaps with it very closely. Take your time on tests, attend tutorials, and do the extra credit quizzes. BMS 200 doesn't hurt either. Overall, a very interesting class if you can keep up and understand the processes.
Hard class! Enjoyed it though! John is a really nice guy!
I took this class this summer and it was very difficult. There is a lot of information but Walrond is a really sweet guy. A pretty big curve for each exam (got a 56 on 2 out of 5 of them and ended the class with an A). You need to put in the work for this class but an A is definitely not impossible.
Dr. Walrond is a great professor. His class is HARD. That being said, it is clear Walrond loves to teach this subject and that is reflected in his teaching. He is willing to help and provides many opportunities to get extra help outside of class. He is kind his students, and we all love him because he is a genius, and he's really cool.
Currently taking this class for the second time and I am still failing. I've done the tutors, readings, lectures and reviews and it's still not sticking. This class is great if your major is Biology but I am a psych major and I cannot comprehend this easily. This is my final class I need to get my diploma. Looks like I'm still not going to get it.
Dr. Walrond is brilliant and incredibly passionate about his subject and teaching. With that being sad the class is incredibly detailed and requires a lot of work. It's hard and there is so much information, but it's not impossible if you're willing to put in the work. It's also fascinating and he's so much fun to listen to lecture.
Dr. Walrond is a great professor! I am the third in my family to take BMS 300 and although his tests are hard he is very passionate about the subject and the information is fairly interesting. An A is not difficult if you are willing to put in the work USE THE T.A.'s!!!!!
Walrond is hands-down the best teacher I have ever had. He makes the subject material extremely interesting. Extremely well-prepared for each lecture. Definitely a good class for visual learners. I thought his tests were very easy if you are able to understand the body system interactions rather than fact-memorization. Highly recommend!
I received a D in BMS 300. It was not for a lack of effort though, as I went to every lecture and studied roughly 30+ hours for each test. Although Dr. Walrond knows what he's talking about, he draws on the board instead of powerpoint notes, which makes it difficult to understand. Also the tests are DEATH.
This is a tough class, but there's no reason anyone should fail. You NEED to study. The tests are tough, but if you read the material and draw out diagrams, you'll understand the material enough to be able to answer his questions - BEWARE - they are NOT straightforward. Final exam grade can replace a previous test score.
Walrond is easily the best professor at CSU. Yes, his hand writing requires a scribe and he has fill in the blanks for exams. But if you're taking BMS 300 you should have to work for this class. He makes every system easy to understand and tells it like a story instead of just facts.
Dr. Walrond is very highly respected at CSU. I failed the first test, but ended up getting an A in the class overall. The key is to practice the old tests as much as possible because you need to know HOW he will ask questions. The mistake I made on the first test was not going over test questions although I memorized the material.
Take this class at Front Range if you aren't a good test taker. They break it down way more and you can spend a little more time on the material. This is a great class if you're a Bio or Chem major.... not if you're a Psych major like me.
I took BMS 300 online, and thought it was excellent. The online class consists of video-taped classroom lectures. It is an advantage to be able to pause the video-lecture to keep up with taking notes. No reading materials are needed. The exams focus on understanding concepts, rather than memorizing details.
Professor Walrond definitely knows his stuff. The problem is his exams are brutal and I've found that no matter hard I study I can't pass his exams. If you're a biology student, you've found your dream class. If you're a psychology major, expect to hate life. PS if you're trying to get into grad school, save this for your last class.
This class is a lot of work. Preparation for the exams took me 15+ hours. The questions that he asks on exams are not straight forward. I recommend signing up for the recitation- it was really helpful. Lectures are posted online so you can watch again. He does curve the tests to bring average up to 72% which is nice.
Why hasn't Dr. W published a peer reviewed journal article since 1999? By far the WORST professor I have ever had. His teaching method is completely incomprehensible and outdated. He does not use powerpoint, instead opting to draw unintelligible diagrams labeled with illegible hand-writing.
Terrible professor. Apparently the tutorials were vital to passing this class; however, they happen outside of class and when you work full time they are practically impossible to attend. Seems to give other students an unfair advantage while I studied extremely hard yet was still unable to pass. His lectures were very unhelpful and scattered.
Walrond knows his stuff, no questions there, but his teaching method is horribly flawed. GET A TUTOR NOW. GO TO THE TEST BANK. Be ready to work hard just to pass. This class has the highest drop/fail rate at CSU. The tests are mostly logic based MC questions w/ fill in the blank. Best part of class was the last few weeks with Dr. Bouma teaching.
I truly enjoyed this professor. He knows his stuff. This is a very hard class but students have every opportunity to succeed if they stay on top of things
This class is almost impossible for a psychology major and it makes no sense that they have to take it when lower bio classes are not required. The grading is done by only test although some extra credit can be obtain if you are free to watch live tutorials. Failed this class twice am giving it one more try, reviewing old test helps some good luck
BMS 300 is definitely a challenging class if you don't have prior biology knowledge. But by far one of the most interesting classes offered at CSU. Dr Walrond is a difficult professor. Some people like him some hate him because of his teaching style. Tests are difficult but if you know your stuff its easy to pass. Just takes a lot of work.
This class is challenging and fast-paced. If you stay on top of the material and make sure you're following the concepts, you'll do fine. There is a lot of help offered (take BMS 200 at the same time!). Dr. Walrond is a genius and can sometimes be hard to follow but he is fascinating. Don't spend a lot of time drawing -- just listen in lecture.
Dr. Walrond is one of my favorite professors that I have had at CSU. BMS300 has a very large amount of material. The class is test heavy, but there are extra credit opportunities. He has taught this class for dozens of years, knows the material, and goes through it very well and thorough. Wouldn't have wanted to learn this material w/ anyone else.
Walrond is an old school guy. He records his lectures of him writing on the whiteboard. You need to watch every lecture to pass, and I highly recommend taking the recitation (BMS200). The entire class is based on four exams but there are extra credit opportunities. You have to study for his exams--multiple choice and fill in the blank.
John Walrond, is the best professor I've ever had. He is incredibly smart, and is super funny, even though most times his jokes go way over peoples heads. The hardest class I've ever taken, yet he made me want to work for it, which i've never felt from a professor. The fill in the blank section of the exams are easy, not the MC though
John Walrond was a great professor. However, he can go fast, and his figures on the board can get confusing, so I suggest re-watching every lecture after class to catch what you missed. He really wants his students to succeed. You can do well in the class if you are ready to put a lot of effort in. Also, do all of the extra credit!! It helps a ton.
Dr. Walrond is the best professor I have had, and I can bet he'll be one of yours too. Class is hard, but he cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches.
Completely unreadable handwriting, terrible hand drawn diagrams that are very disorganized, incredibly fast paced, not loud enough to be heard past the first few rows, and extremely difficult exams. Dr. Walrond knows what hes talking about, but he cant fathom that other people dont know it as well as him. Very bad professor. BEWARE.
Dr. Walrond is by far the best professor I have had at CSU. He is caring, intelligent, and passionate about physiology. He works with students to adapt to their needs, and he is a good teacher. While you are able to watch the lectures online, I found going to class helped me pay attention. It is a hard class, but totally worth it.
Dr. Walrond is by far the best professor I have ever had. His class is so difficult but he makes things easy to understand and gives you the materials necessary to succeed. You need to study a ton but if you go to lecture and pay attention you will be fine. I recommend getting a sketch book for this class to take your notes.
My favorite teacher/class I've taken. Passionate and intelligent teacher with amazing GTA's. Would SERIOUSLY reccomend taking the recitation and listening during tutoring sections. Textbook is expensive and unnecessary- less than 1% of extra credit comes from the book, otherwise I didn't use it once. Will miss this class and Dr. Walrond.
Dr. Walrond is an amazing professor. His class has plenty of extra credit opportunity but beware, this course is only graded off of your exam grades (4 + final). The material is hard and there is a lot of it but it is a very interesting course and his lectures easy to follow. Sit close so you can read his handwriting!
One of the best professors I've had and courses I've taken. It's clear he's put a great deal of effort into making his course exceptional. He writes on the board, which is good because it gives you a chance to absorb the material. The lectures are clear and interesting. He obviously knows his stuff. Exams are challenging but fair.
Walrond is my favorite professor to date at CSU. The grades relied only on the test which I loved. His lectures are engaging and he writes everything on the board which makes it easy to follow. I just watched the lectures online and took the recitation and did well in the class. Great professor, very personable and approachable.
I had to take this class 4 times because the exams do not reflect the material taught in lecture. There are only exams and extra credit quizzes that don't prepare you for the exams and no additional homework assignments. The class goes through too much material in one semester. Unless you need to don't take physiology at CSU.
Dr. Walrund is the best lecturer I have ever had -- a true master. Many people found this class to be extremely difficult, but I don't agree. You have to understand the material, this is true. On exams he tests conceptual understanding, not memorization of facts. If you want to be a scientist or clinician, this class should be a good time.
His exams consist partially of material covered in lecture, partially material covered in the text book, and partially of material not covered by this class at all. Hope you have a background in Oncology, because nearly a third of all of his exam questions have to do with cancer in various systems, which is NEVER discussed in class/the text
Absolutely amazing
I love Dr. Walrond; his humor and real life examples make difficult concepts easier to understand. That being said, understand that you get out of this class what you put into it, i.e., you have to put in the workand a lot of itto do well. His tests are based on your conceptual understanding of the material versus memorization, so be prepared.
Such an amazing class I really enjoyed his teaching style and the exams weren't bad at all!
Dr. Walrond is my favorite professor Ive ever had... his hand writing is sloppy, but he doesnt use PowerPoint, he writes down everything he wants you to know. All I did to study was re-write my notes in a more organized way everyday after class and got an A!
Dr. Walrund is the best lecturer I have ever had. His tests are very hard, but there are many resources. Lectures are recorded and uploaded to YouTube. There is an email where you can ask GTAs questions. There are recitations. I can't give Dr. Walrund enough praise as a lecturer. You will learn a lot in this class! (don't use your phone in class!!)
Lectures are intense but the tests are more intense. Study all the time and get ready
He is an incredibly nice man, but can seem scary to approach. Sit at the front or there is no hope for you to read his hand writing (still good luck there). If you have any questions he will try his best to answer them. TAKE THE RECITATION! Good God I wish my scheduler didn't mess up and I was in it, you NEED it. Overall I really like him.
I thought Dr. Walrond has been an amazing professor. It is much more fun to actually go to his classes than to watch them online. His handwriting is pretty terrible, but you almost start to get used to it by the end of the semester. The class itself is very specific and the tests are the only grades aside from extra credit. Take the recitation!!!!!
This is a hard class but it is meant to be that way. Walrond is an amazing teacher and tries not to give busy work. He is sympathetic and adds points to tests when the average is low and gives lots of extra credit. As far as the class, you get out of it what you put in. If you put in the extra work, you will be fine.
Dr. Walrond is one of my all time favorite professors. Hes funny, extremely knowledgeable, and caring. He goes fast in class, so be ready with colored markers to copy everything down. Do all the extra credit as its pretty easy stuff. Rewatching his lectures is helpful too. Many of the questions on the practice tests are on the exam, so do them
This is a hard class in general, but he does a good job of teaching it. Most of the exam material is taught a few days before the exam. The lectures are recorded and posted on canvas so you don't ever have to go to class. There are 3 extra credit opportunities.
Great teacher! Hard class! Be present or watch the lecture videos in order to retain information. He writes on the board and has no slides so make such to take good notes. Overall a great class and Walrond is SUPER knowledgeable.
Horrible teaching style and tests are impossible to pass. Reported students cheating and he did nothing about it even though the test curve is based on how well people did. He monopolizes the course, one should not have to take a 4 credit class, on top of another 6 credits of restitution just to barely pass. He prides himself on hard tests.
very tough material, but I think the teacher is very interesting and funny. It takes a second to understand his teaching style, and he has very hard tests but he expects people tout in a lot of effort outside of the lecture material. overall I loved him as a teacher!
Learned a lot in BMS 300!
Overall I had a horrible time taking this class. Dr Walrond seems like a really nice guy and he is very knowledgeable, but be warned, his test are nowhere near as nice. If you have a hard time with dense materials over a short period of time, you'll probably flunk. The tests are conceptual and hard. So far there aren't any tips for average students
Dr. Walrond is an acquired taste. Some people love his teaching style, others hate it. Basically, to pass this course, you have to learn how to answer the test questions. His test questions are hard and application based, but you WILL do well if you put in work. That being said, he is a great teacher and a pretty funny guy! Would recommend.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. That being said, definitely the hardest class ive taken, but if you put in sincere effort and go to office hours all the time and go to class and neglect your social life and the rest of your classes youll do great!
Hardest class I ever had. He's nice and knowledgable. Everyone loves him. However, the content is way too overwhelming than necessary. I have never spent this amount of time in one class and ends up with my very first B in this class. The class average was C (there are two sections with 600 students). This class is way too hard than necessary.
Dr. Walrond is a great professor. He has a very visual teaching style, drawing diagrams to walk through concepts. He tells stories, but they actually relate to the content. That's rare. That said, BMS300 is fast, so it helps to watch Youtube (CC Physiology/Armando Hasudungan/Osmosis) before each system. Try new study methods and you will succeed!
John Walrond truly seems to know everything. He has in depth knowledge of A&P and teaches in a way that makes everything connect by the end of the unit. His teaching style is slightly different, but rewatching lecture videos is the best way to study to catch everything he says. He only tests on stuff that he mentions in class which is helpful.
Worst professor I've ever had. Lectures suck, his handwriting sucks, and tests are brutal. The TA's for this class are awesome, but Walrond SUCKS. He goes way to fast in lectures, his drawings and terms are way to crowded on the board so it's hard to see/copy, his handwriting is awful, and the questions on the tests are impossible.
Dr. Walrond is awesome. I can't explain how insanely smart and funny this guy is. His tests are really hard, but not impossible. I highly recommend taking the recitation. The GTA's are fantastic for this course. Go to the lectures, don't watch them online. If you put work into actually understanding the material and not memorizing, you'll do great.
Makes the class much harder than it needs to be. The tests are nothing like the lectures. Lectures are drawing-based and the tests are paragraph long multiple choice questions.
I loved Walrond's visual teaching style, and I found that granted I either went to class or watched the lectures online (taking thorough notes, of course) I got all the information I needed to do well. I didn't like that the syllabus made it seem like you needed the online textbook to complete assignments when it was only for extra credit quizzes.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Exams are extremely complicated compared to the material in lectures. The only advice I can offer is to do all the extra credit as it can be a nice grade boost at the end.
GOOD GOD TAKE THE RECITATION. It helps so much with the class and making things make sense. Dr. Walrond is an amazing teacher and always willing to help, although his handwriting can be hard to read and he goes a bit fast. Don't let yourself get behind and put in the work to study and you should do fine.
Professor Walrond is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are always super interesting, and he likes to lighten the mood with a few jokes. That being said his tests were also the hardest I have ever taken. If you do not study you will not pass. Get ready to work your tail off, but kinda enjoy it at the same time. There is extra credit.
Why would a professor waste his time teaching a subject when nothing he teaches will be on the actual test? I haven't taken any of the tests yet, just the practice test, 6 times, and have failed every single time. Why? Because none of the material taught in lectures or in the book, or even the exam review is on the practice test. How misleading!
John Walrond is my favorite. He is extremely intelligent and a fantastic professor. Don't be fooled though, his tests are extremely difficult and are a test of your critical thinking rather than just simply concepts. (Think MCAT level questions.) If you put in the work for your grade, you'll do fine. I highly recommend taking the recitation.
Ive taken this class twice now. For those of you debating taking this class, i would avoid it if possible unless you're an amazing test taker. This class is a good building block, if you can wrap your head around whats going on. No homework, some extra credit (will take TIME). He thrives off of the fact that he knows his tests make your eyes bleed.
Best. Class. Ever. It is an incredibly rigorous class, but there are so many things to help you get through. Take the recitation, and do all the extra credit offered- mostly just to help you understand the material. Don't put off watching or attending lectures. It took me a bit to get used to the style he lectures in, but he is an incredible prof!!
Personally I loved Walronds teaching style. Plus he curves every test so the average is always at least a 70. If you want to do well in this class: do the extra credit, do not miss a single lecture, take the recitation, talk to the TAs when youre confused, and be prepared to see the connections between topics, not just memorize stuff
This is probably one of the only classes I've had to completely throw my hat in an look into transferring credits from another school to complete this requirement. This course is ridiculous when it comes to the exams. All the content is understand able and Waldron teaches it fantastically. But the fact the his exams are nearly impossible to pass.
I loved Dr. Walrond and his teaching style, but I know it's not for everyone. His exams are not just relying the information, you need to fully understand the material in order to master his exams. He is an amazing professor, but you have to be able to ask for help from the GTAs or him, rewatch lectures, and retake notes and you will be good!
I really don't understand what the hype is all about. This class was way harder than it needed to be and the tests just seem ridiculous. I'm not a med student, I'm an engineering student and this class wasn't for me. Maybe I'm just used to really good professors in the engineering dept., but Walrond wasn't that great, objectively speaking.
Honestly, his tests are ridiculous. I have watched and rewatched every lecture, attended every extra review session, done every extra credit assignment, taken the practice exams, gone through the study guide, and talked to TAs outside of class, and I still could not get above a 30% on the exam. I honestly felt like not a single question made sense
I had to take this class twice because I got a D+ my first time however I got an A my second because I knew what to expect from the first time. You simply cannot memorize the material you actually have to study and learn it. I recommend drawing everything as many times as possible and without looking at notes. He teaches the material like a story.
He is so passionate and knowledgeable about human physiology that his story-like lectures are engaging and easy to follow. He gives lots of extra credit (do it), resources and his TAs are very helpful. The class is difficult but if you put time and effort into deeply understanding the material, his exams become more like a puzzle than a nightmare.
He is a decent person but a terrible teacher. He draws pictures as his way of teaching but if your not a visual learner its useless. This whole class is basically teaching yourself. It is a weed out class for people going to med school but if you have no intention of going to med school, do not recommend.
Walrond is the best professor I've ever had. I have testing anxiety and struggle with engineering classes, but his class immediately clicked for me. If you are passionate about the subject and talk about it daily, you'll learn it naturally. It's possible to succeed during the shorter summer course, this was my first time taking it and I did well.
This is a TOUGH class. Professor Walrond is a great professor though. I wouldn't want to take this class with anyone else. The tests are very difficult and you must understand the material to do well. This is not a class you can passively do well in if you're anything like me.
Dr. Walronds teaching style isnt for everyone, It definitely isnt my cup of tea but if you spend the time studying you will do fine, he provides all the info needed for the exams. His exams are not like most professors. He makes you use critical thinking connecting the info together its not AB and so most students cry about it but its passable
Walrond is super passionate, has put in a ton of effort for creating an online format, and is overall a great professor. His tests are very very difficult, but he accommodates for the low grades (get above the 50% average and you have an A or B). 10/10 would recommend.
John Walrond is a great guy. There is a lot of content, personally taking it online might have been better because you can pause him. He really knows his stuff and wants you to also. You can't just memorize things for the tests, they are more application based, you actually have to understand it. Put in time and effort and you will do well.
He is the absolute worst professor I've ever had. I feel like he genuinely does not care about his students, especially students that are not studying his topic of interest. He teaches us incorrect information and backtracks 3 lectures later, and he directly admitted to making the tests impossibly hard on purpose. He is a bad professor.
If you want to truly learn Physiology take Dr. Walrond. His tests are some of the most difficult I have ever encountered. If you truly commit to learning the material, you can pass this class. Do ALL the Xtra Credit. Take the recitation. Go to office hours. There are so many resources built into this class, if you don't pass - you simply didn't try
John Walrond is one of the most difficult but most respected professors Ive had at CSU. I took BMS 300 this semester (fall 2020), and it was very challenging at first because he writes his exams like NO OTHER PROFESSOR. He is so passionate though and knows how to teach. if you work super hard getting an A isnt impossible at all! (I got one)
He definitely knows what he's talking about, but that's where the positives end. Does not directly talk to students, you can only talk to TAs. Get ready to spend every waking minute studying to barely pass. Not uncommon for people to fail upwards of 3 times. Changes grading rubric at the end of the semester and will not publicly post new criteria.
He is a great professor that really knows what he is talking about, however, his tests are like no other. You have to study really hard to just make a grade. He writes his test hard and openly admitted to making a test harder than he was wanting because he was mad at the class.
Dr. Walrond is great. Even in a pandemic hes an effective professor. I tried to watch most of the lectures twice so I could copy all of his writing the first time and than to back and listen closely the second time. If you dont have time to watch both just always make sure to stop and understand something before you move on. Buy a white board.
Im sure he knows what hes talking about but no one else does. He hasnt published a paper since before his students were born and doesnt seem to care if you learn anything. Admits to writing hard tests bc hes angry at students. Wont talk to students. Definitely take the recitation and do ALL of the extra credit.
I'm sure Doctor Walrond is wonderful in-person, however, with the pandemic, his class has become intolerable and impossible to pay attention to. His less-than-legible handwriting leaves a lot to be desired, as well as his refusal to use more modernized teaching equipment (pre-made lecture slides) with relevant information clearly stated is a pain.
BMS 300 with Dr. Walrond takes at least 15 hours per week if you want to actually learn all of the material. He goes fast but he writes the notes with the class as he teaches!! His exams are hard, but he does curve. Find a study partner and review every two weeks. He also has lots of extra credit opportunities :)
Walrond is a good teacher. This class gets a bad reputation but it's really not that bad. There's a lot of material, but Walrond covers it well, tells you everything you need to know, and lets you have a page of notes on the exams. If you write down what he puts on the board you'll be fine.
THIS IS 100% THE HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN HERE. Dr. Walrond is by no means a bad professor, there is just way too much information shoved into this one class. I understand that it is a 300 class, but compared to other 300 classes, this was insane. Dr. Walrond taught great and made everything easy to understand, the tests are just impossible
WATCH THE LECTURES AND TAKE NOTES. Best professor I've ever had. You really have to understand the material, so don't rely on just getting information out of a textbook or notecards. Lectures were incredibly interesting and posted right after class. Make this class one of your priorities and you'll get through it no problem.
Dr. Walrond is one of my favorite professors and does a really good job with his lectures. This class is not easy but if you use all of the resources and make sure to really understand the material you will do good. Definitely take the recitation, do all the extra credit, and go to office hours it is super helpful!! Dr. Walrond & TAs are amazing!
BMS300 is a very difficult class, however Walrond knows what he is doing and will lead you to success. I struggled with this class in the beginning but when you actually listen to Walrond and his team's advice you will be met with success. Really great professor, haven't come across a professor so intelligent like this in a while.
Dr. Walrond's BMS 300 class is one of those classes that challenge you and either make you or break you. Attendance is not mandatory but each is heavy on information. Grade depends on your exams only and will test you on actual application and for your understanding. Regardless, he explains everything well and you are guaranteed to learn.
I absolutely adore this class and Dr. Walrond. I honestly don't know how people don't pass since they curve exams by over a letter grade. Just listen during class and takes notes and you'll have an easy A.
Great professor, excellent at describing & working through human body piece by piece. Very tough tests, but if you put the work in very rewarding. Professor very understanding and easy to work with, great TA's who know the material and can help with relatively every question!! 100% would take this class again!
Dr. Walrond is an absolute inspiration, I learned so much about the human body and came out of his class with so much respect for physiology and biochemistry. What a wonderful person he is! This was by far the best class I ever took at CSU, and even after passing his class I still enjoy watching his lectures.
I personally appreciate his teaching style, but he is objectively an incredible Professor and insanely knowledgeable about Physiology. If you desire to learn the material, you're in luck. You'll learn an immense amount, and if you are interested and excited it won't even feel like a burden. BUT if you don't care, the tests will make you regret it.
This professor is by far the least motivated and least caring professor I have ever encountered. He spends more time talking to his whiteboard than his students during lectures, and doesn't care if students pass.
Dr. Walrond is a very knowledgeable, competent, and understanding teacher; the TAs are incredibly helpful and kind; the class is set up in a great way. My advice: watch the live streamed/recorded lectures so that you can pause and make connections (+ read TA's notes); before each lecture, study the material from the last; do the lecture quizzes! :)
BMS 300 is one of the hardest classes in the Natural Sciences at CSU, but John Walrond makes it so enjoyable. His lectures are wonderful and very organized. He speaks very clearly and concisely and in a way which made me excited to learn the material. His passion for the subject is very apparent and his experience all makes him the best!
This is my 2nd time taking this class, and I'm still probably not going to pass. When you try to follow his lectures, he goes way too fast and his hand writing is impossible to read. On top of that, the tests are tramendously hard, and are phrased to confuse you. Just an overall bad experience.
Put the work in and youll do well. Study for a few days for the exams-mainly rewatch the lectures for each section. There are lots of ways to get help also. Grade is based solely on tests but if you do all the extra credit it will bump your grade after the final exam. Watch section reviews for the final, good luck!
Fantastic lecturer and is INSANELY knowledgeable in physiology. I learned so much information in this class and he tries to break down a complex subject with stories which really do help. This class is insanely hard and even if you put in the work you might not pass. His tests suck and are super hard but my study habits improved after this class!
Had to take this class 3 times and had to drop it every time. Gave up and took a class through Front Range to replace BMS. Exams go more in depth than the lecture goes. If you miss one lecture you are behind and its hard to catch up. Do every LQ and ebook quiz and tutorial. The extra credit will save your life. Hes a nice guy, but goes fast
His lectures are very, very good. Quiz/exam questions can be sloppy (FIB doesn't adequately telegraph the right answer; "always" is used even when "usually" is meant, etc.). There's a VERY generous curve, lots of EC, and drop the lowest exam. As long as you've taken background courses in bio and chem, you'll ace the class and have fun doing it.
I LOVE Dr. Walrond. BMS 300 is so organized and you have so much support in taking it. You get used to his bad handwriting. It's not hard to follow if you don't get distracted. I was so terrified of this class going in, and it was much easier than expected. It takes work, but it's possible to succeed without it taking over your life.
He teaches with two other professors. The other professors are great but sadly they only teach small sections of the course. Dr Walrond is a smart man but he is far beyond the material. He does not teach in a way that will benefit most students and gives little resources to study for tests, nor does he return the tests to help study for the final.
He started off the semester by telling students that it's better to go to the GTA's for help because he doesn't understand how students don't understand the material. He has taken what is such an amazing and interesting subject and completely ruined it. I would HIGHLY recommend taking HES 300 or taking it at FRCC.
Walrond is so extremely knowledgable about physiology and his lectures are very detailed. He draws out a lot of diagrams and his handwriting isn't the best, so I would definitely suggest watching the lectures a second time to take the best notes. This class is very challenging but it's interesting! Go into office hours and tutorials!
Amazing lecturer.Super straight forward. I never went to the lectures, instead watched them after online so I could pause. Drew everything well (buy a large pack of colored pencils for this course) and took gooood notes. Then the week/weekend before each exam I'd read notes, rewatch each lecture & make notecards.Over 100 on each exam.Generous curve!
Okay you will need to study extra for this class but it is doable! Try not to schedule a class before this one so you can sit in the front. Walrond takes his notes on the white board and its best to sit close to the front. Good luck :) also his exams are difficult so be sure to study
This is a VERY class, and your grade is based on exams only. However Walrond is a fantastic lecturer, and there are office hours every day and so many resources to get help. How I did well: typed all lecture notes, then redid my notes with the drawings and GTA livestream chat (life saver). Do the extra credit every day, it bumped my grade 6%.
Dr. Walrond is an exceptional professor. He has a different way of teaching than most which can make it seem difficult to grasp at first, but once you break it down it is all digestible. This is a course that will help you excel in other classes solely based on how you study and take in information.
Dr. Walrond is a very good professor. This is a class that you will have to put 20 hrs a week of studying into or you won't have the correct understanding of the topics presented. Draw all diagrams when possible, and make sure to take advantage of extra credit (helps at the end). Helped my understanding and base so much in anatomy and physiology.
For all of the psyc majors who are dreading the day they have to take this class. I survived and it is more than possible. Dr. Walrond is a great lecturer with terrible hand writing. Very interesting material but very difficult to grasp at the level he wants you to understand. Get ready to go to GTA and UTA office hours everyday.
I found Walrond's lectures to be very hard to follow, and looking at my notes I had no idea how to study as all of his lectures were done by drawing/writing on the white board. NO accessible lecture slides to help guide your studies. He is good at explaining complex topics, but if you don't understand his drawings you won't understand the content.
tough detailed exams using Respondus camera monitoring Takes a toll out of you to pass this course with B or even C. Exam questions didn't make sense , they were trickiest, and most convoluted. If you haven't taken biology before, the exams are going to be super difficult for you. there are fill-in-the-blanks questions which can be 90% blank.
Bad handwriting
The tests determine your grade in this class which is why it is super difficult with a professor that does not give clear lecture slides. He tells stories and draws on the board which is nice in class, but his handwriting is SO bad and hard to read. You are screwed if you miss lectures. Incredibly hard class so keep the rest of the semester light.
His handwriting is very poor and illegible at times, there's no slides. The online recordings don't usually get close enough to read his handwriting. If students do poorly on exams, he blames the students. There is extra credit, but the class is graded extremely heavily on exams. He goes WAY more in depth than John Michael, to a detrimental degree.
Walrond is very sweet and caring. He has been teaching this class forever and knows his content however he is old fashioned. His lectures consist of writing and drawing little pictures on a white board so either sit close or watch them online. No in class participation required but his tests are very difficult so be ready to put in a lot of time
Dr. Walrond is by far the best teacher I've ever had. He often draws simplified diagrams and it makes the concepts very digestible - great for the visual learners! I did not have to put in a ton of effort when reviewing because I learned so much during class. His exams are difficult, but I gained such an appreciation for the life sciences :)
Dr. Walrond is a great professor! He is very passionate and knowledgeable about physiology and that made the class so much more enjoyable. His test questions are difficult, but prove you really know the material! I would highly recommend taking his class!
I took 300 as a post-grad prereq for applying to vet school - it was THE hardest class I've ever taken but the one I learned the most in. Walrond is a fantastic lecturer and you'll learn a TON. I'd only take if you plan a career in medicine. VERY hard tests that are 10 steps ahead of lecture material but lots of extra credit to take advantage of!
Dr. Walrond is extremely knowledgeable, but his handwriting and lecture style can be challenging. The tests are very difficult, so make sure to use all resources like Unstuck study and the textbook. Attend class, take good notes, and you'll learn a ton!
