ugh! I don't know where to start. He killed my interest in neuropathology! Tries hard and is very likable, but he's way too difficult of a grader. Extremely subjective.
great professor... take the class if you don't care about grades. I learned A LOT.
Great professor! He is very helpful and provide lots of feedback on assignments.
please do yourself a favor and ignore those negative comments. he's really kind and passionate about teaching. Killer prof. easy As can be hard to come by in the gero dept. but hes very close to that.
Easily my favorite class at USC thus far. Prof. Walsh is extremely enthusiastic about the topics and truly loves teaching.
Dr. Walsh is a great professor! He goes over the info many times and always gets the class involved to help us understand. He is speedy at replying to emails. This class doesn't require a textbook, so you save a ton of money there. You use an free online website that is super easy to use. He's compassionate, intelligent, and hilarious. A+ for John
TAKE THIS CLASS! I never had an interest in neuroscience but now that I've taken this class I find it so interesting. Walsh makes everything so relatable and is very understanding. I learned so much in this class! I will take anything Walsh teaches. If you pay attention, you will do well and love the class too.
Best GE at USC! All material is online; learn from great videos rather than boring textbooks. Material is extremely interesting and relavent to today's society: depression, anxiety, drugs, Parkinsons etc. Professor Walsh really cares about what he teaches: How many professors have you had break down crying in a lecture when something hit home?
BEST CLASS EVER! 2 midterms + 10 page paper + oral presentation + final. Class is curved with A at about 85%. Gives GREAT study guides. Very relevant + interesting, lots of talk on Ecstasy, Marijuana, Bipolar, Parkinsons, Touretts. Teacher is chill surfer guy. I rate this class at 110%! Take it!
The only thing that was 'cool' about this class was the subject. The prof is only interested in his precious root system, doesn't respond to emails in a relevant manner, and you never really know what your grade is. Kicking myself for taking this GE
He was a good teacher but he gave the class a false realization of what the curve for an A would be when he showed it at 85. The class was interesting and he is a good profesor but the class is curved unfair so if you are looking for an easy A don't take this class, but if you are looking for an interesting topic take it.
Such a fun class! I've never had a prof care more about his students and learning. Loved the way he made us all feel comfortable asking questions and kept us interested. Def would suggest to anyone who isnt even a scientist or sci major!
Avoid if you don't plan to come in as a premed student or with a strong AP Bio background. Loved the first class, but was left completely in the dust by the end of the second lecture. Switched to pass/fail immediately. Prof uses ROOT, which has some cool features, but fails to weave material together like a traditional textbook. TAs are top tier.
Interesting professor, very passionate and pretty chill. Root system makes it hard to learn if you are a student who prefers to read things in textbooks. The class was a bit disjointed and Root also didn't have accurate grade reports. Overall a solid GE but it would have been much harder if I didn't have a background in AP Biology and AP Psychology
John Walsh is a great professor, but my TA sucked. He was reluctant to give help, and graded entirely too hard. I'm all for a challenge, but when I put my heart and soul into a project and get a c for it, that is absolutely unfair. John Walsh is awesome, but you might be too busy dealing with a poor TA to appreciate him.
Great professor, great class, great TA's. However, I poured myself into the class only to face a harsh curve that told me loving the class isn't enough. This class is like an awesome party only with a killer hangover.
Probably one of the best professors I've had at USC. I may not have gotten the best grade but the class has left me with real-world knowledge and awareness. Both the prof. and the TAs are super passionate about the class and their fields/research.
The root system made it hard to learn material because it was all over the place. There was a false realization for where the curve would be. My TA had a 'Grad Student God Complex' and graded way to harsh, first time ever recieving a B on a paper and Im an Honors English major :/ Dr Walsh is nice but just shows up to class an goes through the Root
This is a love it or hate it class. Take it p/np or if you don't care about your grades. There is completely no structure to the class and when you have a test there are a lot of surprises. Also some of the ta's grade harsh I had a another ta other than the one I have grade my presentation and he graded me way harsher than in buad 302
Walsh is not super organized, so you should study the OMLT carefully on your own time. However, he is fantastic and his approachability and passion will get you interested in the material. Very knowledgable TAs, but condescending airs did push some students away from asking valuable questions and contributing meaningful insight in discussions.
Professor Walsh is so great! He is so excited about the material and keeps lecture so energetic. He is extremely approachable, understanding, and intelligent. His difficulty level was medium compared to my teachers at SC and was super laid back so if you like strict class structure you may not like his teaching style. Take him!
Dr. Walsh is awesome!! I would highly recommend his class. It was not a super easy class, however, Dr. Walsh is very clear about what he wants you to know for his tests.
He's an entertaining guy, spent a lot of time in class talking about his personal life. His powerpoint slides for lectures are TERRIBLE and taking notes can be difficult due to his talking speed, so record lectures and re-listen. Midterm questions focused way more on detailed biochemical processes than I anticipated (instead of big picture aging)
One of the best professors I've had. Very enthusiastic, very friendly, and very capable of teaching interesting but difficult material in a fun and exciting way. Absolutely recommended to anyone, though the TA's grade at different levels of strictness..
Walsh is great but the class is pretty difficult. I took it pass/fail and really enjoyed Walsh's lectures because he puts the information in real life context. The class is ridiculously hard though, the exams are pretty unclear, take this pass/fail and enjoy it.
Professor Walsh makes class really fun, shows videos and animations almost all the time. He makes sure students engage with the material, but success in the class is largely up to how much time you devote to the material outside of class.
Dr. Walsh is a great professor and a VERY nice person!!! He is able to explain in the crystal clear way very difficult concepts. I have learned A LOT in his classes. Highly recommended for pre-med students. He is one of the best professors I have ever had!!!!
Dr. Walsh is awesome. He's hilarious and makes material pretty interesting. As a non-science major, I struggled with the tests and the curve wasn't super helpful so i did get a B, but the class is really interesting and Dr. Walsh is very available for helping students.
Professor Walsh is hands down the best professor I have ever had at USC. He goes out of his way to make lectures fun and interesting, I would take this class a million times over if I could. He is hilarious and gives breaks during lecture. virtually no assignments, greats TAs, and you will know exactly what is coming on the tests.
Awesome dude!! Watch his video of him surfing on youtube and talking about how much he loves teaching
This has been the best class I've taken at USC. John is super excited and engaging when he teaches. He learns the name of every student in his class and he's super supportive of everyone. He also plays the best music during mid-class intermissions.
Best Professor I've had at USC. Someone who truly cares about his students and the subject matter. Someone who wants everyone to succeed and participate. Life-changing class and life-changing professor. Highly recommend. Also didn't have to buy any books!!
Professor Walsh is hilarious. He is excellent at giving real world examples and explaining difficult concepts. I truly enjoyed his class. However, Gero 315 is not an easy A. Unless you have a background in biology, this class will be kind of tough. That being said, I have no background in biology and I did okay. I would take this class again.
Out of all my 18 years of education, Dr. Walsh is the best teacher I have ever had. He truly enjoys what he teaches and did not fail to personally engage every single student in the class and make it the best time for everyone. I HIGHLY recommend him as a professor!! MUST
Professor Walsh only wants his students to learn something valuable that can be applied to real life, so his teachings are interesting. He is really chill and loves to joke around and get to know his students. If you participate in online discussions once a week and go to the few class meetings, you will get an A.
A friendly, approachable professor who always gives engaging lectures. As an elective, this class offers a great deal of useful stuff, compared to some of the bio core classes that feed you useless crap you are supposed to memorize
Professor Walsh is really caring and just wants all of his students ot be engaged in his lectures. He presents a lot of visual information (videos, pictures, etc.) but also has links to readings on his slides so he has something for everyone to learn from. Though his lectures can seem long, he tries his best to get you to listen and learn.
This professor really cares about you as a student. There is over a hundred people in lectures and he still makes a point to remember your name to show mutual respect. His lectures go by so quickly, they're so enjoyable. The exams are not a cake-walk but if you pay attention you'll do fine. I'm going to miss having him as a professor.
Professor Walsh is very fun. Throughout the semester, he brought in his dog , threw plush brains across the classroom, played music videos every class, showed funny videos, etc. Very enthusiastic and full of energy. He really presents the material in a way that is interesting even if you don't care about science at all (me). Great GE choice!
Best teacher I've had a USC so far. He's a passionate surfer and truly cares about his students. Lectures are mandatory if you want the participation grade and tests are hard but the class itself is very enjoyable. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Walsh is fantastic! He is definitely one of my favorite professors at USC! The class isn't very difficult if you keep up with the content. Be sure to do the lab reports. They make the class an easy A-.
Great GE D. Labs were a fraction of the work of a regular Bio class. Walsh's lectures are very engaging and he always is so supportive of students. He went out of his way to meet me just to congratulate me. Grades are based on 8 labs, three midterms, a final, 4 quizzes, and polling questions, all of which are easy.
Online gerontology. This is an easy class with two short papers, 3 social gatherings, weekly blog posts, 1 online midterm (open internet/notes), and 1 final interview/paper. As long as you try reasonably on everything, you should get an A. John and Julia are very nice and helpful and make the class fun and interesting.
Dr. Walsh is by far one of my favorite professors at USC. He is extremely caring and knowledgable, and wants all of his students to get A's on the tests. You definitely need to study, but he is very clear about what to expect on the exams. Pay at least a little attention in class and study what he tells you to, and you'll do well!
Professor Walsh is a very unique teacher. His condition makes it harder to follow the class content, but eventually gets you to understand deeper the situation of people with ADHD and similar illnesses. My biggest takeaway from this class was becoming a person that is more aware of other's needs, that respects diversity - an important life lesson.
also: do yourself a favor and go to class and take good notes because these ppts are painful
The exams are so poorly designed that even you have memorized every single word on his ppts you will still struggle to get a B Lectures are unnecessarily long and painful JUST NO
Prof. Walsh has been my favorite professor so far at USC. Originally I took this class to fulfill a GE, but ended up LOVING it. The material is very interesting and applicable to everyone. Although I attended nearly every lecture, I had friends who didn't and still managed to get As like me. He is very engaging and passionate, and it surely shows!
Dr Walsh is one of the best professors at USC. He is very caring and makes his lectures really interesting. He is also the only professor I have had at USC who makes a point of learning peoples names. Take his class - you won't regret it!
Dr. Walsh cares very much for his students and wants them all to do well. He's very personable and good about answering emails/being accessible to students. Exams are memorization based and straightforward but they can be difficult because his questions often ask for details. Attendance is taken with polling questions. 3 exams for this course.
Grade based on three exams with poorly written questions. PowerPoints and lectures are very disorganized and contain random links to various simulations. There's no clear, distinct, outlined textbook to follow the material and actually know what you're being tested on. Super nice guy, but really hard class.
What an amazing guy! Learned so many cool things about mental health and the brain in this class. Don't take this if you can't show up to every class because attendance is a huge portion of the grade. Labs are SO EASY! Tests are a little difficult though but the attendance and labs will pull your grade up. Take this for your GE
Very inspiring professor and overall an awesome individual. Lectures are hard to follow and exams are hit or miss.
Literally my favorite professor ever. He's the best. Can mumble or speak quickly at times, and the exams are lecture-heavy but he's such a nice person!!!!!! Genuinely made this class a lot of fun.
Dr. Walsh is hilarious, engaging, and genuinely cares about his students. Material can be challenging, but he does an awesome job of breaking it down and reviewing it until you understand it. Tests were reasonable, and grading was pretty lenient. If you're a neuro major, this is one of the best upper divs you can take!
I took this class for major credit but lots of people take it as an elective. Very easy grader and the topics are not hard at all. Even though it's an online class and those can be annoying sometimes, you literally finish the whole week's work in 30 minutes. Both he and his wife give this class together and they're the nicest teachers!
Lectures are extremely difficult to follow. Unorganized class overall
Dr. Walsh is brimming with empathy, support, and humility. He stays late after class just to hang out with students to talk about material, life, career advice, anything. He once told us: Im not here to destroy your GPA; Im here to help you become the best you can be. A gem.
Empathetic and caring. Brings energy to the class every single day, and made me extremely interested in the course material. Lectures include example after example to enhance understanding. You can zone out and still learn it all, it's very cohesive.
The one true GOAT at USC. John Walsh along with his wife Julia Walsh have created one of the best elective courses at USC. What they teach in GERO 200 is extremely relevant to everyday life, plus the two are just so passionate about what they teach. Every time I talk to them, it's like catching up with an old friend. Highly recommend, love them
Take any Walsh class you can. I took GERO 414 and would take it again. He really wants you to do well and gives you all the tools to help you succeed !
Best professor and best GE. Truly so caring and inspiring. This is an amazing class not only because of the course material, but also the way he connects it to life lessons about love and mental health and general advice. The TAs are also great. The labs and exams arent hard. Just study the powerpoints and youll be fine. TAKE THIS GE !
If you have room to take a 4 unit elective at USC take this! Its super easy & actually interesting & all online. Small weekly assignments that take little time & two tests & a few papers. Overall super easy and manageable for a 4 unit elective. Great profs that are super nice and communicative with students (email reminders about HW each week, etc)
Very caring and lovable professor. He cares about all of his students and will always help you out. Very down to earth. Labs are pretty easy and straightforward.
Professor Walsh is such a nice guy. Hell take the time to get to know you and wants you to do well. The material isnt super interesting at first, but it gets good after the first few weeks. 3 major test grades, 8 easy labs, make sure you know the information before each test. Great GE with a pretty laid-back but knowledgeable professor.
Such a phenomenal person, as well as professor! Took GERO-310 in the Fall with Prof Walsh and not only did I learn incredible amounts about immunology, metabolic syndromes, cancer, diabetes, and more-and seriously, taught in a way tying examples back to all real-life, personal examples, but our class learned so much about life too! Office hrsmust!
Easiest class at SC taught by the most amazing person. Very little work (weekly discussions and quizzes, two papers, an open midterm, and open final). This class is super easy and Walsh himself is such a genuine kind person who is willing to work with and help students.
John Walsh is by far the best professor I've had at USC. You will get what you put into this class. If you apply yourself, you can learn genuinely relevant, interesting information about the brain. If you don't apply yourself, you will still laugh a bit and get an A. It's listed as a 3 hr class, but it never ran over 2 hrs once.
GERO200 is an easy A and also is incredibly interesting and focuses on a wide range of issues. Both profs are super caring and willing to accommodate students (ex: moving deadlines through the semester). Exams are open notes, follow the rubric for the papers and complete all of the discussion boards/weekly quizzes and you'll be fine!
John Walsh is the nicest, funniest, coolest. He teaches this online, asynchronous class with his wonderful wife Julie. All the assignments are available at the start of the semester, and it' very manageable. 4 written assignments (1-2 pages), a midterm and a final, and a final project. Weekly quizzes and discussions take 20 minutes. MUST TAKE CLASS
Doc Walsh is the best professor at USC. I took GERO 310 with him and although the material is hard to grasp, he makes an effort to make sure all of his students succeed. He also has an exercise (core and stretch) portion of class and he really wants all his students to stay healthy. There are weekly discussions and quizzes, but they're not hard.
GERO 200 is the easiest class at USC. Discussion boards, open-book quizzes, one easy essay, and a timed midterm/final make up the entire grade book. On top of that you actually learn some useful life skills. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Loved this course. Easy A as long as you do the work. There's quite a bit of stuff that is due (discussion posts, quizzes, 2 non-proctored exams, 3 papers), but nothing was too difficult and everything was graded easily. Professor John and his wife Julia were amazingly kind and entertaining. If you put in a little effort, you'll learn a ton!
John is the most energetic and engaging professor I met at USC. It's clear he wants his students to success and he does his best to relate class materials with our daily lives. There are quite a few works to do but they are not difficult at all.
This class was sooo easy. All you had to do was put in effort in the labs, quizzes, and discussion posts. The exams were collaborative and his study guide is so helpful. Honestly you would have to not try to not get an A because he gives you so many resources, you just gotta take up on them. Also extra credit assignment available and kahoot
BEST PROFESSOR IVE HAD AT SC!!! So sweet and really wants us to succeed. Understands we are students and have a lot on our plate and is very understanding. Although the content can be a lot, he goes over it many times so you wont need to stress. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Dr. Walsh has changed they way I think about my body! He introduced many aspect of how nutrition influences our biology/health. The lectures are amazing with material which is very helpful even in Med School. If you are not a bio major dont worry-you will still love his class. He's an amusing man with clear passion about his topics. TAKE GERO310!
best professors ever at usc ! so sweet and accommodating ! you have to put in the work to get your grade, but the professor is always there to help :)
One of the best professors at usc, super funny and caring. Exams are collaborative, labs are not hard but do take up a chunk of time. Classes are always 2 hrs.
prof walsh is one of the sweetest professors at USC. he really wants students to be excited about learning and tries to make class really interesting. attendance isn't mandatory (i never showed up) and exams are collaborative so its really easy to get an a. i completely recommend taking him; the class is great.
Had Professor Walsh for the second semester at USC. He is very caring and always gives you second chance for things like a missing hw as long as you ask with a proper reason. Exams are taken in groups, and you can get answers directly from the professor during the exam by asking. Honestly one of the best and easiest GE out there. Would recommend.
One of the Best and easiest GE D in my opinion. Quiz and test are all collaborative, open book. You put in attention, A. Lab reports have clear instructions and good feedback, Tara is not a harsh grader. Dr.Walsh is very caring for mental health and teenager development. If you like bio/neuropsychology, even better, best option.
If you are looking for a chill and fun GE to fit in a rigorous schedule, GERO315 with Dr. Walsh is the answer! Lectures are fun and interesting. Exams are taken in groups so need to stress studying too much. However, there is a lab due almost every week but those shouldn't take too long. BEST GE EVER!
Best professor who is truly an inspiration to his students and believes in everyone's future careers. The setup of the class is very easy and emphasizes learning without too much of an emphasis on assignments, but it still creates an engaging atmosphere. The way he relates the material back to his personal life makes it really memorable
Professor Wash is the best professor I have had at USC. His exams are group-based so very low stress for midterms and finals. Very eager to give advice and spend time outside of class, and goes out of his way to remember every student's name, in some pretty big lectures. He is a super cool guy and has some crazy stories. Best prof at USC by far!!
Going into my senior year at SC and Walsh is the best professor I've had here. He is hilarious and makes the lectures so interesting so that you actually want to go and learn. Tests are in groups. Weekly assignments are based on completion. He plays music every class and brings snacks. Overall, I learned so much from him even beyond the classroom.
Extremely interesting class and is very useful for the future. Weekly discussion posts and quizzes, assignments, and tests are relatively easy and not time consuming. Would definitely recommend!
Completely online course with easy assignments. They respond within 10-15 mins to all emails and grade quickly. This is the easiest class I've taken at USC, and the information is relevant to all majors. Highly recommend.
John Walsh and Tara Mastro create a great learning experience in Gero-315. The class is engaging but doesn't bog you down more than a GE should. I recommend anyone to take Gero-31 with Walsh and Mastro.
One of the best and most caring profs I have ever had. Super interesting lectures and it is extremely easy to get an A in this class. He is so kind and easy to talk to. 100% take his classes! (psa tho he will randomly call of people so pay attention a bit at least)
