willing to help although don't expect much because he is unorganized and is in charge of a lot of stuff so he's always busy. kind of weird but a nice guy. pretty easy A.

I have some lame class mates. Their whining slows down the classs. He's always made time for any questions that I have and most people I've talked to agree. I hate that this class is at 8AM.

C'mon guys Prof. Shafer is not that hard. He gives you study guides and notes for all the tests! Once he even GAVE us the TEST to study from. If you listen to his lectures, take notes, and study then you will do fine. I like his teaching style too.

John Wayne is awesome. He's really passionate about his art and wants to pass if on to his students. His tests are fun and I made really awesome friends in this class. He forces you to get acquainted. I recommend this course to anyone who likes the arts.

Great teacher! He might not know all that much about theatre history, but about careers in theatre and acting he knows a LOT. If you wanna only learn history you might dislike the class. but if you wanna learn stuff you need, Shafer's your man.

Wonderful, very passionate, learning experiences are there and crazy as hell. Very nice, helpful, prompt guy, laid back. If YOU ARE uptight and an overachiever and what a snotty tighta** teacher to treat you like a number then DONT take him.

Way out in left field.. totally unorganized but the class IS interesting (only because you don't know what he is going to do nexy) and really easy. He doesn't so much teach you about theater but about how you can use it in your everyday life which is practical.

This prof came in on a WEEKEND (SAT & SUN.) to help us study for an exam. I've never had a professor so interested in helping us. If you want to learn from a caring instructor, take him. He's entertaining, too.

Interesting classes most of the time, but stereotypes honors students by thinking grades are the only things that matter. Unclear on most assignments though grades very easily. A mediocre professor at best.

Heres a balanced opinion. Professor Shafer is an Easy "A" he goes by the tex book and wants you to get the A so will do everything to help you get it. How ever he's very opinionated. He has alot of liberal biases which is not suprise coming from a theater professor. Just disregard opinonated statements. class is alot of fun,hes fun and helpfull too

I loved his class - he's funny and makes class very entertaining. It's sooooo easy, all you have to do is attend class and listend to his lecture - that's what's gonna be on the midterm and final. He tells you word for word what's gonna be on the exam!!! It's an easy A if your in class and listen to what he says. You'll have a good time

Take This Class! Shafer is really an awesome professor. He does crazy thing to ensure everyone stays awake during class, he walks the class through the finals, and midterms. The only negatives are students must attend two theatre performances, but they were much better than I expected. I would definatly recommend this fun and easy class.

Shafer is wicked funny, and unlike most professors, he actually cares about his students. The class is super easy; he tells you what exact pages to look at in the book for his tests, and the papers he has you write are your opinion on a play, so it's hard to fail that. Take him for a good semester.

He's such an interesting guy, and I have the class from 7-10 at night. He manages to keep my attention the entire time, which is impressive. He tries to make Theater appealing to everyone and brings it to a level everyone can relate to. You do have to see some plays for his class though, but it's not a big deal and you can stay on campus 4 them.

I enjoyed this class very much i took it from 7-10p.m and he managed to keep our attention. He is willing to work with you to make sure you get a chance to watch a play for your paper and he gives you the section and pages in the book that you need to study. I don't know a lot of mean and arrogant teachers who would do that.

The guy knows the stuff, and has a sense of humor. I was entertained by his class. No complaints here... or recommendations.

Shafer is the best teacher when it comes to keeping attention. I had him for three hours at night and I never wanted to leave. He does many demonstrations like standing on a students desk to emphasize the diff. between theater and TV, or blowing fire to emphasize spectacle.

It helps to have some kind of theater experience prior to attending this class. I've been loosely involved with theater since I was little, and I didn't even crack the binding of the text. If you do come to class, he'll make you laugh, if you don't you won't miss any notes really. Awesome class!

I love this class! It could be tiring taking a 3 hour class until 10:20pm but Mr. Shafer makes the time fly. He is always doing interesting things in class and making jokes on a student's level. The class is much easier if you know anything about theatre, but it's not necessary. Easy, fun, and worthwhile. I highly recommend it.

hes so awesome and makes the class so fun. i never missed a class even if it took up all tuesday night. he's hilarious and i would love to take his class again.

The class overall is pretty simple, the papers are fairly graded and he tells you everything that is going to be on the test. Book use is minimal but needed for exam reviews. Keeps it fairly entertaining, a good professor.

He is a GREAT instructer!! Go to class because he does short quizzes just to see who is in attendance. I would def. recommend him.

I HIGHLY recommend theatre careers with John. He will get you to realize what you want to do and how you should do it. He also did wonders for my interview skills. After this class I went to 5 interviews and received all 5 jobs. John is super awesome and helped me SO much.

super nice professor. but TONS OF READING!!!!! its easy to miss class and still learn all the information for the test however he does 2minute papers randomly.. like pop up quizzes, and you cant make them up.. so you definately need to go to class.

Shafer is a funny professor. The reading isn't bad. You could probably get by w/out reading the text, but you have to read the plays. Only 4 of them, so it's not bad. also have to see 2 plays and write a 4 page, double-spaced papers on each, but it's not all that bad. His language is fairly strong, but he gets his point across. Take him if you can.

ended up with like a 98 in the class, etremely easy if you give a little effort, just go to the plays and write the essays and you should come out with at least a B if not an A

He keeps class interesting and prefers to have you learn stuff you may actually need later in life rather than just everything in the textbook. You do need to attend class because of random 2-minute papers, but if you really hate it, just surf the net. It's an easy class overall although the three hours can be rough [but he often lets out early].

I absolutely loved Shafer's class this semester. He is probably one of the most insightful philosophical professors I have had at UCF. He is a super nice guy, and really cares about his students. He wants everyone to succeed. This class is more theatre HISTORY, though, and does not focus on modern theatre. Shafer is awesome!

SUPER EASY A! Just attend class! His tests are really easy. He uses material from the book and from his lectures. I learned a ton of useful information from this class! He will give random 2 minute papers/pop quizzes so go to class! You have to Attend two plays and write a 4 page double spaced paper on them but it was easy. I highly recommend him!

This class is awesome. I took it just to take a class, but professor Shafer made this a very interesting class. Its not a hard class, extremely hard to get a C. There is pop quizes but its free points, its just to make you go to class. Def worth taking.

This class was pretty fun and there wasn't a ton of work involved. There were 2 major papers, pop quizzes, a midterm, and final. Go to class. You can't make up the quizzes if you miss them. The teacher is extremely arrogant and loves to talk about himself which can get annoying.

Amazing! He is very funny and intense. Even when the material gets serious he still mangaes to make it interestng. If you show up for class you'll pass, because he will tell you exactly what you need to know.

This class is hands down one of the best classes that I have taken at UCF. the structure is a bit loose but Shafer makes up for by being dedicated to the subject. I would highly recommend taking it to anyone.

Online class taken during the summer. I enjoyed the class. You do have to write a 4-5 page review on a play. However, I am somewhat interested in theatre and found the play hilarious. Lots of quizzes but if you keep up its not too bad. The final is very easy, based off of old test questions. Professor is cool, I liked him

Took this class online for summer b 2015 and it was easy!! If you need an elective choose this one and take it online. All you need to do is attend a play, which was hilarious, and write a 4-5 page response on it. His quizzes are open book if you take notes while reading the modules or open up another tab with the module there. No book required.

Took this class online in the summer and it was super easy. I suggest you take it like right now.. ONLINE. The quizzes are timed but easy. You basically have the module in one tab and have the quiz on the other one. The only requirement is to do a paper on a play that is watched in person. Depending on the play it will be funny and enjoyable.

I am so glad I took Prof. Shafers class. I do not care about Theatre at all but he actually makes it really interesting. He doesn't use a book just power-point slides that you read and then take a Quiz on. There are 25 (or so) Quizzes and they are all 10 questions, plus one paper and a final.

I took Professor Shafer's online Theatre Survey class. You are graded on about 25 quizzes (10 questions each), a paper, and a final. The quizzes are all super easy and the paper is not difficult at all. If you keep up with the quizzes, you will do well in the class. He is really funny in the modules and keeps your interest.

I'm a non-theatre major who just has a passion for performing and the arts, and I've enjoyed Prof. Shafer from that perspective. His modules are entertaining and engaging, and I feel that my previously lacking knowledge of theatre has increased tenfold. Would absolutely recommend, especially to non-theatre majors. Would absolutely take again.

25 quizzes total, but theyre all pretty easy and Professor Shafer makes his modules fun and entertaining to read. One 3-4 page double-spaced show paper, but its not difficult at all. Best THE2000 professor!

Definitely take this class! It is super easy and Professor Shafer gives you all the material that you need to succeed in his class. He makes his modules funny and entertaining and highlights the important information that will probably be seen on the test.

Professor Shafer structured this class extremely well, his insight and interesting stories are excellent for people just discovering theatre. I would take 10/10 again. Although I didn't get the grade I wanted, it was purely missed assignments on my part, but this class was great.

I took theatre survey in Fall 2019. Overall, it was an eye-opening class, and I got exposed to a lot of theatre genres and examples I wasn't familiar with. You have to see 4 plays in this course, and as Professor Shafer stresses, these can book out fast, so BOOK THEM EARLY. He pre-approves only particular, higher-quality shows, so don't wait!

Honestly such a sweet and interesting teacher! His lessons are far from boring and there are only quizzes.. no assignments besides one singular show paper as a midterm grade. The quizzes are directly from the lessons that he writes.

Even though this was an online class, I felt like I already knew the professor. His humor exudes though the content he writes himself. He is also super accommodating. I lost a family member this semester, and he was very understanding about the circumstances for getting deadlines done. 100% would recommend :)

This class is basically a "read the material and then do the multiple-choice quiz that follows" type of class. However, the reading is not from a textbook and is instead written by the professor himself. He's actually pretty funny and the lectures are actually enjoyable to read. Other than that there is a 4-page paper due, but I did it in a day.

I love Professor Shafer's enthusiasm. The work is not difficult at all, you read lessons in each module and do a quiz for each one. The questions come straight from the studies and he gives freebies sometimes. There's one paper and it's based on watching a play. As long as you've been paying attention to the material you read, then it's easy peasy!

Highly recommend for GEP 5 or 6. Grades are based on weekly quizzes, a final, and one show paper. The quizzes are easy and he gives you a lot of time to complete them. The paper was based either on watching a show on YouTube or watching Hamilton and it was pretty easy. He gives you a lot of reminders so just do the work on time and you'll get an A.

I 100% recommend this course! There is a module to read each week that is super fun and entertaining, and then 1-3 quizzes each week that are super easy. There is one show paper that isn't hard. There is no extra credit but make sure you complete all the quizzes and you'll do great! The final was super easy too. I very much enjoyed this class!

Easy A. I would have got an A+ but I missed a quiz! The material is also really interesting and you can tell he cares about the material. I really enjoyed everything that I learned :)

He was really cool. I loved his silly jokes and his insertions of his own photos! He included a lot of personal experiences and I really enjoyed them. Also, class is extremely easy, I recommend.

The class was pretty easy: consisted of online modules that he wrote himself with quizzes that were based directly off those reading, plus one show paper. Plenty of grades so if you forgot one quiz or did bad on it, your grade would still be fine.

This class doesn't have any lectures to attend and is entirely self-paced. It was very easy to complete and the professor is so passionate about what he does. This was a really nice class that I didn't feel the need to stress over. Keep up with it and you'll definitely get an A.

Attendance not graded but fun lectures & some in-person-only assignments (F2F mode). No textbook, just his own modules with info he finds important. Frequent quizzes (most=10 questions), often straight from the text. A few longer quizzes & 100q final. One 4-page show paper, but he gives talking points (take pics at all shows). Huge inspiration and a must take professor for any aspiring theatre majors. Class was super easy. Most of the time we would go in and just talk about his life story. Would take another class of his in a heartbeat. Can't say enough good things about the class, if you need a GEP definitely take it!

This class was pretty simple. Just stay on top of the quizzes that he will post as the semester goes on. There is also a show paper due which is also pretty easy as long as you don't plagiarize. He gives you an easy outline to follow for it.

100% would recommend it- his lectures were not mandatory but they were interesting enough that you never wanted to miss them. The quizzes are all very straightforward and are open-book (which is on the modules because he wrote his own book so students wouldn't have to pay). If you embrace the (sometimes silly) activities, you'll have a great time.

I took THE2000 with Professor Shafer this past semester. His class was very easy. The primary assignments consisted of small 10-20 question quizzes based on short reading sections he provided within Webcourses at no additional cost. Throughout the reading modules he wrote, Shafer adds occasional jokes and explains the concepts in a clear way.

Quite an easy class, just have to stay on top of assignments. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, he does surprise in-class assignments that are graded, so show up to every class if you want to get those points. Overall, it was a relaxed class that's interesting. Quizzes are 10-20 questions long, final was 100 questions.

Incredibly easy class with interesting content that is put in an easily digestible format by Mr. Shafer. If you need an easy GEP this is definitely the class to choose. There are a bunch of quizzes to stay on top of but it's easily manageable. On top of that there is a single, 4 page paper on a certain theater production but he grades very kindly.

Professor Shafer is one of my favorite professors. He has about 26 quizzes and all the questions are taken directly from the readings. There is a show paper which is four pages long and double spaced but only takes a couple hours to complete, very easy!! His final are questions taken directly from past quizzes. Great to even out a heavy workload!!

This was a great and easy class to take for a GEP. It consisted of many readings and quizzes, along with one show paper. As long as you read the lecture notes the quizzes will be easy. The show paper was also straight forward. You just had to watch a musical and write your opinion about it. Overall, great professor and fun class!

Everything is paced in a manageable time, just stay on top of due dates and you'll be fine. Definitely start the term paper at least a week in advance.

Professor Shafer's course was excellent! He gives weekly module readings, and quizzes that are based directly on the readings. The quizzes are quite easy. There is one 4-page essay, if you try it's super easy as he gives you a paragraph-for-paragraph format. Friendly, funny, and fast email responder. Highly recommend it for an easy GEP/GRW

Professor Shafer was great! His quizzes are very easy if you read each short one page module, and it's evident that he does his best to set you up for success! There's a paper toward the end of the semester that's 4 pages long, but he lays it all out for you ahead of time, and he even gives you paragraph by paragraph prompts to get it done faster.

Easiest class you'll ever take! The quizzes are all really easy and take barely any time to do. Professor Shafer writes all the content for the course and it's actually a really interesting read if you take the time to go through it. Just make sure you take all the quizzes on time as he doesn't give out extensions.

It is evident that Professor Shafer cares deeply about his students, however, his class is graded almost entirely by these little quizzes that you need to take daily. His tests are open note and non proctored, same with the final. However, you cannot miss the quizzes, or you will not get an A. Shafer is funny and caring, should be an easy A.

Easiest A ever, got a 99%. Never interacted with him, but he seemed nice. Make sure you do all the quizzes! Try not to procrastinate on the show paper. That is the only assignment that takes any sort of brain power and time.

Super easy class!! Mostly based on weekly open-note quizzes. And there's a Show Paper & Final Quiz (still open-note, but ~100 questions).

Most of the course is written lectures with a quiz at the end. It's easy to get a 100 on every quiz and, frankly, every test. I have no excuse for my C. Watch out for the big Show Paper. You essentially get the whole semester to plan and write it so DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ON IT. I wrote mine in one day. Bad idea. His feedback was harsh but deserved.

Super easy course, everything is on canvas. He bolds all the material you need to take notes on (if you even want to since nothing would stop you from cheating). Class is super easy material-wise. The only hard thing is the 4 page show paper which you can just watch Hamilton for and then comment on every little thing for a solid grade. Easy class

Very quiz-heavy class, but if you do the reading (which is interesting and usually not too long) you should pass every quiz with flying colors. There is one paper towards the end worth a lot of points. All you have to do is put thought into it and follow his grading criteria. Overall easy class with a hilarious and caring professor.

He is super nice and lets you know what his expectations are. All course content was written by him, divided into several modules. There are a lot of quizzes, but every question comes straight from the reading. You have to follow due dates so you don't miss any quizzes. There's also a 4 page paper and a cumulative final.

Even as an online professor, Mr. Shafer was so fun!! He wrote out his information in a really entertaining way, which is tough to do for an online class. You are required to see a play and write a paper on it, but I enjoy plays anyway so it was okay. Quick to respond to messages. If you don't read, you won't do well, but he provides hints. ;)

Really easy class. The professor writes all the information clearly and follows the schedule. Your grade is based on quizzes, tests, and one paper. The rubric and grading are very clear. Quizzes questions come straight from the readings and are not hard at all. Easy A!

He tries to scare you at the beginning about how hard the quizzes are going to be, but don't be afraid-- they are quite easy if you actually read the material. Be aware that 95-100 is an A, and below 95 is an A-. Interesting lectures, Shafer clearly is an expert on theatre. He unfortunately made us sing/act in front of the class a couple of times.

I took the class online but he seems like a super cool guy. The class was really easy but I also found it to be super fun. The final is a paper so you have to take the time to do that, but the criteria is not very complicated.

Class is SUPER easy and simple. I was worried about the huge play paper that was due at the end of the semester. However, it was a lot easier than expected and I was able to simply watch Hamilton on Disney+. I love how the professor added fun questions into the mix to give us some free brownie points. Overall, a great class and a great professor!

Fun and easy class to take. It was easier to take online because of the classes I was already taking. I recommend to attend one of the plays that UCF Theatre is hosting, it's a once in a lifetime experience. The quizzes/tests are heavy but the questions themselves are not bad (he occassionally keeps it light and funny).

Literally the best professor ever. Pls take his class if you need a theatre survey credit bc it's SO easy. There is one paper you have to write and its very chill with no crazy formatting or anything. 10/10!!!

Professor Shafer's assignments came directly from his readings. There was one paper called the 'show paper' which entailed reviewing a theatre piece. The piece could be a live theatre production or a preapproved recording of a production. Overall, he is a good professor.

He is a down-to-earth guy who is extremely passionate about what he does. Lectures can be boring sometimes, simply because it's a lecture, but he does his best to make them fun and interesting. Lectures were sometimes interesting, sometimes boring. In class activities were often fun and graded for participation. Fairly easy quizzes based on readings. Readings are short, but you must note all small details. One paper, not hard if you plan. Don't procrastinate, and you'll be fine. Honors version is not really worth it time-wise but not bad.

Such an easy class and an awesome Professor. Very funny and kind, is caring and respectful as well. Lots of Quizzes but are easy, Tests were a breeze. The only difficult part was the Theater Paper, but it's straight forward and it isn't that bad. Overall a very great class.

He makes lectures fun and interactive and he is so funny. There was a lot of moving around the class room or taking trips to different fields for interactive exercises, there never a boring day with Shafer. He gives participation grades on the class exercises and every now and then he has pop quizzes. One time he brought swords to class.

I absolutely loved this professor, I even recommended him to future theatre students. If you're going to take THE2000, look for John Shafer.

literally the easiest class i've ever taken. he writes his own lectures and posts them and they're so entertaining. all the assignments are just quizzes. however there's a big project/paper that's also very easy to complete but it requires you to attend a live play on campus or watch it online and analyze it. about 4 pages. wrote it in like 2 hours

Easy course, was taken online for theatre survey and it is all just simple reading and multiple choice exams and one essay for the midterm. Teacher is super quick to respond.
