He's nice, but he'll put you to sleep

Dr. John is superb although he at times seems baked. He is challenging yet fair.

very knowledgeable, and interesting lecture

I heard he was tough for other english classes but is awesome for poetry writing. A tough marker but passionate about poetry and is totally personable and funny. Is open to critiquing him.
If you know what you're talking about, you'll do fine. Doesn't insist you agree with his opinions.
Kick ass teacher. The kind of English teacher people dream of having.
John Webb is the epitomy of what a teacher should be. He is interesting, fair, and completely down to earth. He is an endless resource of information and I wish I could retake his course again and again.

Does tend to blab on a bit, but interesting lectures. Takes his time to tell you what to improve on, relatively easy quizzes and essays, and super nice guy. Best English teacher I ever had.

He is a very nice guy, but he gives unclear instruction + expectation. Students can learn from other students, but not from this instructor. He is not suitable to teach communication class.

creative writting poetry. Thank god he didn't spend a lot of time goin into the esoteric meaning of poetry. Very witty, sarcastic and dry sense of humor. Entertaining and down to earth. I worked hard writting my poems and got an A-. Will help all.
He has such a nice english accent and he rambles on! All we do is listen to him read/analyze poetry. On all his tests/essays, I've gotten Bs throughout. Very easy and relaxing course. NO homework. Great teacher!
Not his student...But a sweet gentleman, polite charming and adorable.
I loved taking John's course. Very down to earth, witty, and extremely knowledgable. Tends to talk on tangents, but all very interesting. Definitly an easier course, but it's nice to just be able to sit and talk about poetry.Speak up in class! He loves chatting with his students.
For one former student, J. Webb's Studies in Poetry course was acutely insightful and enlightening. He is gracious, understanding and encouraging. He is considerate with his time and marks. Work hard and repay the effort and energy he brings to his classes.
His studies in poetry class must have been one of the most boring classes i've ever taken! No room for class discussions on poetry because we sat there and listened to Webb speak for 2 hours...literally! Highly unrecommended!
I have to say this is most boring class i have taken, especially the poetry portion. He's such a hard marker, and the essay topics are uninteresting, however, easy quizzes. Talking to him in his office hours sometimes help, but most of the time, he just tells you how bad your writing is. Avoid!!!
John is a great teacher, inspiring and full of knowledege. Tends to ramble on a bit sometimes, but it is usually interesting stuff.
Yes, he's a great teacher, but before everything, he's such a wonderful person. He's fair, helpful, gentle, knowledgeable, compassionate, sensible--everything you want from an instructor. Highly recommended!!
wicked teacher, not a big fan of english classes myself, this guy made it ok....
sometimes interesting, but most of the time = so boring. and keeps rambling. when i am learning? it's hard to tell. i took NO notes in his class. but he's nice, i'll give him that.
he's quite nice, quite easy going if you show him you're a responsible student eg. if you are going to be absent just give him a call or email him or just talk to him he would excuse you and tell you what went/will go on in the class and would excuse you for late paper
HARD marker at the beginning but if you show effort he is very generous. Not picky about things like grammar or lateness, just wants intelligent, clear, concise writing. He rambles but it is usually funny little stories.
this guy loves to hear himself talk!
It's very nice to listen to him speak, but I very rarely left class feeling like I was taught anything. It seems he's happy to just rate your writing, rather than teach you how to write better. No class discussion. Very friendly, but a poor instructor. Doesn't care about pedantic formalities though, which is a nice change.
He's an easygoing guy, but his quizzes are like bulldozers (i.e. what was the last word of the novel? how many died in this battle?)... so detail-oriented. I doubt I'll learn much in this class, just rambles and sits down. I got a B in 1127 and I get a C- on the first quiz. Oh yeah, he gives one twentieth (1/20) of a mark. How can he do that?!:(
Whoa, some marker! Limited feedback, unclear of what expects from paper. He's a doctorate... PhD, scary. However, easygoing kind of professor -> cracks a joke or two in class, but that is about it. HARD quizzes pratically once/week, tricky tricky. Oh... when was the novel published? If you are great in english, then take him, otherwise... :(

He's alright, I guess. There is not that much work in his course. One in-class essay and a final... taking notes in his class does not exactly help.
Wow, all those comments before indicating that he is such a good prof is totally misleading. My god, this guy is a f**king a#$, i mean seriously, could he be anymore unhelpful. After getting back in-class essay, go to his office hour, does not give advice to improve, but rather tell you that you have major writing problems,& critique your mistakes
OMG!!!! He's soooooo bad! I fell for his good ratings so I registered for his class... = BIG MISTAKE! Anyone else is better than him.. Trust me...
John has a different approach to English. Some may like it while others do not care at all or cease to pay attention. A gentle soul who tries to maximize every mark you can possibly obtain. Many eng professors & students think he's hot, from what I have heard. To improve, one REALLY needs to make an EFFORT to approach him. Favors boys!
As an instructor, he comes to teach, doesn't he? Then it is his responsibility to spend time and prepare.
I suck at English and still managed a C+, so not bad.
he is very harsh on his words if you do poorly on an essay. he will put you down and he never teaches anything its all essay writting. he will definatly make you feel stupid, so if you dont like to be put down dont take his class
If you're an English student, he's an ok teacher. You won't learn much, but if you're accustomed to an A/B in English, you won't suffer, you'll get an A/B. If you're ESL, or more of a science person, I'd go for someone less subjective. He's pretty harsh on kids who don't already understand everything and can't already write a decent essay.
Prof Webb was my fave prof for my first yr @ langara. Hes consistent in his marking, gives good reason behind his grades, and likes to use humor during class. I love his jokes and his style of teaching.. i've become a much better student because of him. he's awesome!
He's a very intelligent guy (in fact he should also be teaching History )and hilarious! His classes are really interesting(I wish they were early in the morning though) The quizzes are the hardest part(Every Monday) - the questions are specific -meaning remember every/any detail. Essays-2essays, and they're a breeze (3 pages) We watch films too!
I took English 1127 with John. He's a good teacher, but he's an extremely difficult marker and tends to go off on tangents that have little relevance to what he's suppose to be talking about. Otherwise, he's always offering extra help and he genuinely wants you to do well. If you do your work and try your best, you'll get your A.
I found class pretty boring (probably cuz it was a 2hr class), although he was quite funny at times..i usually get B's in Eng, and thats what i got, so he's a fair marker. We pretty much did nothing during class. He often let us leave early. There was 1 big research paper and a couple short essays. He told exam essay topics ahead. not a bad teacher
I am used to getting B+/A- grades, so when I received my first paper back from Webb with a C- on it, I was shocked. He totally ripped apart my essay - but with good reason. Throughout the course of the semester, I learned to catch myself on stupid syntax errors etc. and become a precise, interesting, and clear writer.
do not take this class!!! it is so terrible, you will not learn anything. the only reason to show up to class is to hand in a paper or take a quiz. i did not learn anything, his lectures are boring.
I thought he was great, a good listener and helpful. He does talk a bit but other than that he's all around a good teacher.
If you are a non English student, this will be the easiest class/grade. Ever. For those of you who want to learn something, don't bother. There is no reason to show up to class. Also, if you are in 1129 so you don't have to watch movies, you will find that you watch the movie version of everything you read. Horrible taste in poetry.
A SUPER SEMESTER! One of the best and most reasonable professors at Langara with a lot of valuable academic and life experience. If you want to improve your English and get a good mark in the process, just quit text messaging in the classroom, attend class, and give him your undivided attention, the rest will fall into place. It is that simple.
He's a nice guy with a sense of humour and a British accent. However, his class is a waste of time; he talks on and on and on. His quizzes ignore the substance of their topics, focusing on "factual" details (of works of fiction!!). Still, he marks generously and his few criticisms are spot-on. I really just wish he'd talk less.
What can I say? Nothing intelligent, according to John. No, not really. His marking is pretty fair, but I stayed within the B range the entire time, due to him NOT teaching. The comments about the useless quizzes are true. As well, he talks on and on (and scribbles all over the board like the English equivalent of "Proof"). Kind of cute though.
TAKE HIS CLASSES! People on this page seem to comment on the him not teaching grammar, but this is a uni.transf. course! You're not supposed to be taught grammar anymore! Although, his pet peeve is the correct usage of "it's" "its" "s'" and alike. SHOW UP TO CLASS, AND FOLLOW THE COURSE OUTLINE! Go see him during offi.h., he will help a lot!!
I agree, he's great! People, decide what you want! You say that you don't want to be watching a movie in ENG 1128, but he's just trying to get you to remember at least something from the course. He is aware that all you're really concerned with is sex, food, and facebook. So, just show up, pay attention, make eye contact and you'll pass just fine.
Very poor instructor. Going to his class is a waste of time. He rambles on and on with an occasional joke. Walked away this class with nothing. Always complain about how painful it is to mark student essays. I mean if you hate marking, you've obviously made a wrong career choice. Hires harsh external marker for your research essay and assigns.
if you really like to learn about poetry, take his course. if you are not good at writing essay, your grade will not be good. he is quite a tough marker.
You can suceed in this class only if you are ALREADY good in English. He doesn't teach. He only rates you, not teach you. Gives harsh comments.
John is a fantastic teacher. He does go off topic occasionally but he thinks outside the box and can help you expose your original ideas instead of regurgitating garbage. He wants you to think on your toes. He is a helpful instructor and he genuinely cares about your success. I wish I could take more classes with him.
Webb is a great teacher. People saying that you won;t do well unless you are already good at English: well no kidding. This is university transfer course. You are supposed to have Eng 12 as a pre req. Quit trying to minimize the fact that you are functional illiterates.
I agree with the person just below a bit that you have to be AMAZINGLY GREAT in English to begin with or all you get are harsh comments. Not only is the comments harsh, it's unnecessary sometimes, but he says it to emphasize how horrible you are.
I don't want to bash Webb but I would definitely recommend NOT taking his class...especially if your new to langara and haven't taken a prior class of his. He made me feel like my writing was worthless. This is supposed to be 1128, obviously i'm in that class for a reason! Very critical and lacks in actually teaching.
He has this cute accent so its not that bad listening to him rambling. He gave a long piece of reading (ahem, The Machine Returns? a4, ten pages (double sided mind you) and expected us to finish it in a day. I only pretended to know what was going on, and that's probably what most of the other students did too!TESTS ARE SO HARD TOO ITS IMPOSSIBLE
Dry sense of humor. Rambles totally off topic, but classes are funny and interesting. If you miss class or appear to be falling asleep he'll call you out in class and make you feel bad about it. His weekly quizzes on texts are detailed and tricky but I'm not sure how much they actually count towards your grade. Provides exam questions in advance.
He is not that bad. Lectures are very entertaining. He is kind of on the pessimistic side.
To the poster below- no, that`s not irony. This is why you`re not doing well in the class... You have to be smart and write well to get a good grade from John. Most people are not smart, nor do they write well...Just the facts of life...
He's okay, entertaining, yes, but if you're not good at writing (in his opinion) then it'll be a long ride to hell.I've had better english professors, so if I had the chance I wouldn't take his boring classes.
I'm not big on participating in class; I'm pretty shy. Although I did well on my writing assignments and essays I received a bad grade because I didn't speak much during classes. My mark doesn't reflect my writing ability, and I think that's wrong.
The class became predictable, we sat listening to him complain about technology for the entire semester He would tell everyone who didn't do well and what they did wrong His marking methods are unclear, and often were nit-picking. Things he liked in one essay he'd complain about in another. Very poor memory. Does have a lovely British accent
Attendance to him is like the most important thing ever. And you don't learn in class he just talks. Kinda pointless. He's a nice guy and all but yeah I wouldn't take his classes again
A very tough marker. Like Dumbledore without the long hair.
I learned a lot from John in the short time I had him as a prof. He was very helpful and actually took the time to listen to his students concerns/ideas. If you work hard and show up to class, you should be fine.
I don't get all the bad reviews... you can't just come into college expecting that you can slack just like in highschool and still get an A. He doesn't like tardiness or absenteeism but will still try to help you catch up. Likes to talk off topic, discussions can be interesting. Doesn't know how to use technology and frequently complains about it.
I found John to be helpful and understanding when you approach him for help. He is a good balance of steadiness and flexibility. He enjoys discussion and reading aloud. His selections of short stories are interesting and thought provoking. He is clear with what he wants in an essay, and marks with fairness. A nice person.
John was a good english instructor. He appreciates an interesting paper over a typically structured essay. When choosing an essay topic I would recommend choosing the most interesting option and you will be guaranteed a better mark than if you chose a more typical topic.
Funny! He'd make a good critic. Unfortunately if you suck at writing you will get an earful. Fortunately, he's good to approach with your work in order to get helpful hints about why it sucks, and he makes sure you have the opportunity to do well if you put in the time and effort.
He is very nice and helpful. I think he's the nicest teacher in the whole college. He wants you to read and think about what you read, and then express yourself clearly, but that's a reasonable thing to require in an English class. He's very smart and open to new ideas. It's rare for a college teacher to remain enthusiastic, but he has. Amazing!
He is really nice. Gave frequent, personalized, positive criticism. That is why I found him very helpful. He is very engaged with his students, learns your names and helps everyone individually which is almost unheard of. One of the rare ones. Highly recommended.
John is quite entertaining to listen to. He often goes off on a tangent, but that's part of the entertainment. He is very knowledgeable and super helpful. He is not unreasonable when it comes to marking. To succeed in his class, write with personality!
THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER! John is really helpful and his classroom environment is very relaxing. His readings can be dry but easy if you do them with care. He is a very fair marker so if you struggle in English take this guys class!
Some readings were really dry and boring, and his quizes are fairly hard, as they are on very specific details in the stories, such as specific metaphors, sentences or dates. A good teacher though, and my writing has improved a lot. A fair marker.
Great professor. Very helpful and explains material very thoroughly. Gives excellent feedback regarding essays which hardly any professors do. Quizzes can be a little too detailed but all in all a good professor
John Webb is a great person. He talks about interesting topics in the class.but DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADES. You won't get good grades in his class unless you are a really good writer. If you are an average writer you won't get better than C+.
To sum it up: He is nice, very helpful; go to class; he rambles off topic; pretend to be interested; if you're an average writer do NOT take his class; he's a good critic; his weekly short story quizzes are easy, but make sure you read the story before class
Dr. J Webb is an amazing teacher! If you want to truly improve in writing essays, TAKE HIM! He does weekly quizzes which are basically free marks. He rips your essays apart, but that's how you learn, by seeing your errors and fixing them. One of the best Prof's at Langara College by far.
Pros: Nice guy, funny british accent, his weekly short stories are not that difficult but require specific details from the stories. He is not that hard of a marker on essays and for the research essay he bumped up my original grade on it. Cons: class can get dull, rambles a lot
John Webb is by far the best english teacher i've ever experienced. His accent is quite "groovy" as well as his interesting classes. He is a soft marker in my opinion, but you've got to be able to write properly structured essays without constantly repeating minor mistakes. He's a great teacher and very easy to approach.
