Best university professor I've ever had (I'm second year even though it's a first year course). His classes are fun with great anecdotes and crazy criminal justice psychology examples (drawn from his on-the-job experiences as a psychologist for Corrections Canada). He even makes the effort to learn as many names as possible in a class of 250+.
Any one who says John is no good obv. just didn't go to the class enough and didn't study enough before the exam. He is extremely fair and stays after class for 30m to answer Qs. He has been the best prof Ive had so far. If you want a prof that brings first hand experiences, interesting examples and someone cares about his students then get John.
Extremely helpful and genuwinely cares about his students suceeding. I recommend this prof to anyone who is looking for a fun free elective!
Best Prof. I've had yet, anyone who says otherwise should have shown up to class.
Excellent prof.Stays after class to answer questions and give guidance.Absolutely passionate about the field.Very knowledgeable, with emphasis on criminal/drugs/forensic areas.Gives many real-life examples.Powerpoints are sketchy-take notes, but only need basics.Exams a breeze if attended class.Goes on tangents-be patient!Text only for basics.
So, John is very animated. He doesn't teach linearly so watch out if you learn that way. He goes off on tangents quite a bit - the catch? They're interesting! He loves what he does and he is an asset to know. I enjoyed the class, and would love to take anything else he offers. If you miss a class, you might miss a hilarious story.
Confusing at time, drug references in every class, but all in all a great prof. Friendly, approachable, funny... highly recommended.
BEST PROF EVER! all of the below comments are true.
Awesome prof. Nothing not to like. Very open to helping students and knows his stuff. Genuinely enjoys the material.
took psych 1001 and 1002 with him.... excellent prof; exams are relatively easy; great guy that you can tell loves his job and salways willing to answer questions; going to lectures will help suplement the course material but are not mandatory... the text covers all you need to know for exams; finished with A+ in both courses DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!
best prof ever. hes able to teach the lesson and help us understand by including hilarious stories. loved him
JOHN is great. He is hilarious and always has a story to tell relating to the content. He knows who everyone is which was nice to see. Really helpful and makes a point to stay after class to answer questions. He doesn't usually lecture for three hours which is nice, but he isn't cutting you short either. I wish I could take more classes with him.
By far my favourite prof I've had at carleton. Tells the funniest and most interesting stories. One of the only teachers that genuinely cares about his students. Wish he taught more classes because I would forsure take another one with him! His lecturing style makes you actually WANT to go to class :)
John Weekes is one of the best profs at Carleton. Tries to get to know everyone even though the class is huge. Very interesting and animated, love his lectures. Easy to get an A if you just attend class and take notes.
Best professor I've had at Carleton. Seriously, take any course that he offers. Addictions is incredible, he makes it fun and interesting. Uses real examples that are incredibly interesting and help you get the idea. Attend lecture, take notes, listen and you'll get a good mark. He's super approachable and a great professor!
Great proff, if you're looking for just a lecture course maybe not the best because he does a lot of discussion, but it is beneficial.
John is an excellent professor who is passionate about psych. and loves helping his students. He has lots of great stories and makes every lecture worth attending. He tries to get to know as many students as possible and is always free to talk after lectures. I just wish he taught more classes.
Best professor i've ever had. Has great connections if you become a part of his student team. Loved him so much that i'm writing my thesis with him! Always happy to help you out and is super friendly. Definitely take addictions. Easy A+ if you go to class
He was okay. I didn't really find him engaging, found he talked a lot and I got bored and didn't pay much attention. Very kind and enthusiastic but his teaching style just wasn't for me.
Tried to gear a course on addictions and psychology more towards criminology as well as corrections. Will not bell curve or round grades up or down, excessive use of pop culture references. Can be a bit of a prude at times, for best results I recommend taking this course with Ahuja.
Probably my fav psyc prof. Worth noting is that he is trained in clinical psychology, and is the only Carleton prof I know of whose teaching is based on experience being a clinical psychologist. I agree with all the above opinions. He's very funny, charismatic, and extremely inspiration for anyone interested in clinical, addictions, and/or crim
Awesome course and great teacher. Always there to give a helping hand. To do good in the course however, you been to be present and take good notes. However material is not very difficult. He tries to add humour is all his lectures and this makes an interesting topic to begin with even better. Recommended!!
He rambles the whole lecture on stuff that is hardly relevant to the course. His lectures are scattered but his midterm and exam are pretty good if you study. Overall, not the best but is very helpful outside of the classroom. Not my favorite but not the worst.
John is a really nice guy, super approachable, EXTREMELY helpful (about course content and stuff unrelated to the course). Definitely not an easy A but if you go to class, take good notes, and study you'll do well. His mc questions are "which option is MOST correct" and his short answer questions can be vague. Not impossible, just have to work hard
Awesome, interesting and really understands his students. He actually wants to get to know you! I recommend any class he teaches. You dont even need to touch the textbook. But attending class is a must, but with him teaching, class is a treat.
AMAZING prof. Definitely one of my favourites this semester. Talks a lot, but it super interesting.
Best psych prof ever. He has the clinical stories to back up the theories and he's always interesting. Highly recommend
John is an amazing prof. He keeps his lectures entertaining while getting through the required material. Some students may have found his personal experiences and stories irrelevant to the course, but they help him break the ice and let students know he is their friend and not just a professor. I would highly recommend his class.
Definitely the best class of the term! John's an excellent prof, he really knows what he's doing and tries and makes lecture very interesting, especially at 8 pm!!
John is super laidback & a lot of fun. He does go off topic often but the stories he tells are interesting & most of them relate to the course content (kind of). Honestly one of the best profs I've had in my 3yrs at Carleton, he really cares about the class material & the students. WOULD RECOMMEND! ps, the final exam is cumulative though
He is one of the best profs ive ever had. He made the 3 hour lectures bearable and is very friendly, knowledgable, and approachable
Engaging, entertaining and such a fun class!!
Really cares about his students. 3 hour lectures tend to get long but he does his best to keep the class alert and interested. Not an easy A class but enjoyable nonetheless.
Draws from professional experience and is very open and ready to answer questions. One of my favorite professors !
The best prof Ive had in my 3 years here so far. So approachable and willing help with class content, or anything else. Makes the class really interesting and 3 hour lectures dont feel long. If you participate in class he will remember your name, and he will say hi if he sees you outside of class. Good sense of humour, amazing prof overall
Great guy and very likeable. However, the class should be renamed to "clinical/counselling psych (addictions) because I learnt more about how to treat someone with an addiction than addictions itself. This is not my area of interest so found it boring and hard to study for. Wish I knew it before hand. Wouldve loved to learn it from a neuro aspect.
midterm/exam very fair, really nice guy, loves what he does, no textbook required. Had an amazing semester with john weekes.
John is super charismatic and gives entertaining lectures. He seems to really care about his students and will often give advice on how to be successful in your studies. I really liked that he has extensive practical knowledge in addictions and a lot of funny anecdotes. He does sometimes go on long tangents, however we always ended early!
Have to go to class, likes to ramble
John is a great prof, who loves what he does, and truly is inspirational, the tests are pretty straight forward , can be tough but if you study well it shouldn't be a problem.
John is a rambler to say the least. While some of his jokes are amusing, he spent the majority of the time using the class at a stand-up gig rather than an educational setting. He seems to be a very personable guy and even offers his cellphone number to students who need extra help. The class was hard to take seriously because of the constant jokes
Absolutely awesome prof! Great lectures, clear cut material and really loves interacting with his students. He genuinely cares about your success in the class. Exams are easy if you study the material well. Even if you don't love the material, he teaches it in a way that makes you fall in love with it. I can't say enough positive things about John
Amazing, nothing bad to say. Midterms and Exams are straight forward, with one bonus question. Short answers on exams require lots of memorizing and final long answer is an application question of all that you learned. Funny stories and approachable guy, always helps his students. Take his 4th year summer clinical class PSYC 4001B (new in 2016).
He's a very approachable person, but I didn't enjoy him as a professor. His lectures disregarded, and even contradicted the researched material in the textbook, in favor of his subjective personal experience. It seemed as though he lectured about his opinion on a topic, rather than the facts about that topic. Easy grade, but didn't very learn much.
John is a WONDERFUL prof. He really loves teaching, and loves clinical psychology. He does ramble, but it's always interesting. If you reach out to him he can be an effective mentor and great supporter. He is honestly wonderful for anyone who likes more practical learning and lots of real life context for his materials. He's the BEST prof.
If you love science and want to learn a lot about addiction, DO NOT TAKE this class. If you want to learn about the criminal justice system, take a course taught by John. His lectures feel like a waste of time because he tells useless stories but you have to attend to get the tidbits that are actually important. Easy A but not enjoyable.
He is very knowledgable and a really nice guy but he spends 75-80% of the lecture talking about himself and his experiences with little to no relevance of the course content. Gets off topic often resulting in one lecture spreading over 2 weeks. No exam reviews make tests difficult to study for as his lecture are of no substance.
An absolute embarrassment for Carleton U. Does not know even the most basic things about drugs (thinks PCP is a psychedelic...) and will preach his factually incorrect opinions the entire course. If you actually want to learn then have a look at MIT and Emory Coursera addictions courses instead where they actually have educated professors.
The best professor that I've had in my four years at Carleton University. Very open and friendly guy who lets you text him any questions you may have. His exams are also enjoyable and you'll laugh your way through the exams. I recommend you take this class or any class with John!
John does talk a lot about his experience, but it's relevant. He provides guidance on how to make the best of your time at Carleton. This course in addictions is in PSYC department, not NEURO, therefore its not science heavy, and has no science prerequisites (which is a complaint) He's a good and fair prof. Take him if you get the chance.
John is such a lovely, caring professor. I was a distance student and I loved tuning in to his lectures. It made me feel like I was visiting an old friend. He is so genuine and really cares about his students. His course really changed how I look addictions and opened up a whole new world to me on treatment options. Thank you John!
Dr. Weekes changed my perspective on the field of Forensic Psychology. One of the most caring, accessible, and educated professors CU has to offer. His stories are relevant and his examples are often related to corrections as a result of reliable data in terms of substance misuse. Class was always enjoyable and fun to engage in. Highly recommend!
John is such a caring professor and genuinely cares for his students. Gives great feedback and is very supportive. Definitely going to miss his classes.
John was one of the most caring and approachable professors Ive had. He gave really useful information about volunteering and how to make the most of your time at university (something a lot of professors dont address). Hes extremely knowledgable in his field, and the lectures were interesting and engaging.
Great professor! Truthfully never even went to a class in person, just ensured I did all of the required online and textbook readings, watched the recommended films and kept up to date on the lecture slides. Having prior knowledge from grade 11 & 12 U level biology is VERY beneficial to doing well and coasting through this course, in my experience.
Very easy class but John really likes to drone on about himself so its easy to zone out and becomes quite boring. He will spend upwards of 30 minutes on one slide talking about a story that is hardly related to the course content. Would take a class of his again for an easy A, but not if i genuinely wanted to learn about the subject.
John is a nice guy. I found it hard to sit through 3hr online lectures as he often goes on very long tangents that are not related to course material. He enjoys talking about himself. He involves the class and is happy to answer student questions but his answers often don't make things any more clear. Mark is made of just midterm and final exams.
This was my first online class that felt like I was sitting in a lecture hall. Didn't try to cram as much info as he could into a recorded lecture & actually tried to connect with students. I really appreciate that. He's always accessible outside of class. Should strive to focus more on course material, and identify when tangents get too drawn out.
He is very interesting and shares many cool past experiences but goes on tangents very often so might be hard to follow the material and stay focused during the lectures
Tends to go on rants about himself and easily loses track of what he is teaching. Does not use enough material to determine your grade as your final grade will solely depend on how well you do on your midterms and final. Definitely would not take it again. He is passionate about the subject but his lectures are just a snooze fest.
I went into this course expecting it to be the hardest, and my least favourite course. I was proven wrong about one thing. While it is a hard course, the way John teaches is different. The way he engages with his students during lectures shows how passionate he is about the course. I wish I could have taken PSYC1002 but it was reserved for B.Comm.
My favorite professor at Carleton! Loved his class and his lectures.
I haven't went to a single lecture but I'm sure if I had went I would have gotten an A+. If you're willing to read a lot of pages off textbook the night of the exam you really don't have to go either.
Great person, outlines everything really well!
Some say that John rambles on from time to time, but those ramblings actually come up on all exams so PAY ATTENTION. He also always gives 1/2 bonus questions that are ridiculous to easily boost your grade. He also rounds to the nearest number for grades (initially got a 78 on our first midterm, went up to an 80 because he felt bad literally)
Tends to go on long round about personal stories, where some bits are related to the course. It was hard to decipher important parts of the exam vs. John doing storytime. It's disrespectful to students' time since some of us are also working, or other responsibilities, or use the time to study. Always bonus question that is related to "story time".
He is an entertaining, funny, and an easily contactable professor, though his lectures do oftentimes end up being quite prolonged, filled with tangents about things that are unrelated to the topic at hand. The exams are (multiple-choice), based on a mix of what he talks about in class and what the assigned textbook says. The course is test heavy!
He told students he didn't recommend buying the textbook. Lectures were scattered but interesting if you like listening to stories. When it came to tests the lecture material was not organized and thorough enough to obtain enough testable material. Did PSYC1002 with another prof and got an A-. Recommend to buy the textbook and read it on your own!
I had John Weekes twice. His lectures are long but he does end them early. It is true, he talks A LOT about irrelevant topics. This wastes a lot of time and although he says his stories have a point, most of the time they do not correlate to the exams. He is very caring though and clearly passionate. His exams can be a bit unfair.
After taking a different professor in the first semester for psychology, John was a great change. I took his class that was 3 hours long, and he never wanted to keep us any longer than 2 hours. That is just one of the many cases that showed how much John truly cared about us. His tests are based on what we learn and are not subjective!! Reccomend
John is kind, personable, and knows his stuff.
He yapped so much during his lectures that it was hard to know what I needed to know. instead of having that 3 hour class (which he shortens to 2.5), if he didn't yap he could have given sufficient info to do well in a hour MAX. Apparently if u study using the textbook youd be better off. If ChatGP didn't exist to expand on his slideshows id fail.
Really fun prof. Often ended class early since it was a 3 hour lecture. Would tell you what is going to be on the test. Best part is none of his tests are cumulative. Didn't even have an exam, but a test that happened during exam period so treated as an exam but weighed the same as the other test. Hilarious and super nice.
His lectures were heavy with information that wasn't on the slides, which makes attendance mandatory and if you miss a class you're screwed pretty much. His course grading relies solely on midterms and the final, so you can fail the course if you don't do well.
A very nice and funny prof. 3 tests total and the exam was like the other 2, also non-cumulative. He does tend to go on tangents but they are relevant for the bonus questions. Would also end class earlier so they wouldn't be 3 hours. Make sure to go to class and record the lectures or use the textbook because the slides don't cover everything.
I enjoyed the atmosphere of his lectures, although they're content heavy as long as you read the textbook and take good notes during his classes you'll be fine. Very caring and passionate, he looks out for his students and is well experienced in his field.
Very nice and caring prof. Easy to follow lectures. Sometimes he goes off topic during this lecture but I find it interesting. I didn't find the textbook reading were required to do well.
super chill
Very test-heavy (32% each).Go to lectures, do the readings, meet with the TA/prof, and STUDY. Tests cover lectures, readings, and tangents. He often goes on tangents, which can be confusing/annoying, but those parts still show up on exams. Different teaching style for sure, not my favourite. Long class but he finishes an hour before, so thats gr8.
Avoid this prof at all costs. Lectures lacked structure. He is extremely disorganized as he rambles. He failed to plan for my accommodations during final exams (did not use MEC or check Ventus) and ignored my calls during the final despite giving his number for "support". Save yourself the stress. There are better instructors out there.
Professor lacks structure for the course. Learning outcomes are not posted and tests are filled with random questions. Lectures are filled with useless stories. Without prior knowledge from other classes, I likely wouldn't have performed as well in this class. I would recommend taking this class with a prof who sticks to the textbook.
John is a very Kind and caring professor but he talks a LOT about his experience and general things during lecture that has nothing to do with course material. Though he mentions everything on exam would be taught in class, go through textbooks and put in the effort to understand the material if you want good grades in his class.
Super funny and nice guy. Talks about himself a lot. Attend the lectures. Exams are all M/C.
A disorganized lecturer who loves to talk about himself.. Do not take his class if you have ADHD.. you won't have a chance on staying focused through irrelevant rants.. The MC exam questions are poorly written and come across as juvenile, like they are trying too hard to be funny rather than clear
Half of the lecture is him rambling and talking about himself. It's very easy to zone out in this class. The lecture slides barely have any information on them so if you don't attend, you'll have a very hard time catching up. We had 3 Quizzes all worth 32% and 4% for participation in research. The quiz had a lot of random unserious questions.
He wanted to know every student in the huge class. Really interesting guy, and the personal anecdotes he shared actually related to class content. I'd definitely take more courses with him as my prof, and that's saying something, because this was an elective for me.
Not quite sure why this person is even employed in an educational setting. Talks for ages about nothing and is delusional enough to believe he is delivering informative content. The only reason I can think of for all these positive reviews is his false facade of being the "friendly prof." Avoid at all costs.
GOAT PROF! idk why his ratings aren't better like im currently taking his class and i was unsure if i should take it based on the reviews i saw but bro hes a good prof i promise like just study like any other class and ur good. he takes all the info for the exam from the lectures so i got a 90 for the first exam and didn't even touch the textbook.
Sweetest professor ever. Made coming to his lectures enjoyable and I looked forward to it each week. Easily the best prof ever.
few things to grade on
John is such a great professor. It's evident he really cares about what he teaches and wants to get to know all his students. If you have the choice to take his class, do it! One thing, don't buy the textbook. Never touched it and passed the quizzes with almost 90 every time (without studying that hard). Really enjoyable class and great professor.
Professor Weekes is extremely genuine and one of the nicest profs that I have ever had. He does get off topic sometimes but his life experience and points that he is making when he does this are very valuable. I really enjoyed his lectures and taking his class.
This prof was super kind and actually did make the transition from hs to uni easier. The way the class is set up, even if you dont do the readings and just pay attention in class/take notes you can pass with an A. The prof's real life examples were helpful (to me at least) and he was always very open to questions. Gave great advice for ur future.
the amount of times this man says "so on/and so forth" is genuinely maddening. i counted once over 100 in one lecture. it's at the end of EVERY SENTENCE. it drove me crazy but aside from that he's chill. engaging lectures and if you take notes you'll be totally fine (i didnt do any external readings and have been just fine so far)
Yapped the whole lecture. Exams included things that were never mentioned, and dumb scenario questions!
Dr. John Weekes is a kind man but all he does is yap! He can spend 40 minutes just on the introduction slide. The midterm and final exam are all short/long answer as 'he doesn't believe in multiple choice'. He expects us to read the textbook but half the things in the text do not correlate with his lectures. He is nice guy but not a good professor
Kind, but incredibly difficult. Criteria for midterms and exams is totally unknown, impossible to study everything when there is so much content. Exams are written answer only and not enough time to write them. Added a slideshow for us to review on our own after classes had finished and had it on the final exam! Don't take PSYC3604 with him!
Talks a lot about himself. "and so on and so fourth" gets used about 400,000,000 times per lecture. Tests about himself. Tests are unique, no clue what to expect. Tests are lecture only. RECORD HIS LECTURES!!!! He's nice, has history, most certainly knows his schtick, fails to demonstrate qualities pertaining to a typical professor.
John is an experienced professor. As others mentioned, he goes off topic a lot, and it is hard to stay focused in the class. Apparently, tests are from what he says in the class, and you have to take notes on what he says, but I always wondered, "What notes shall I take from what he is saying?" I expected more from his experience. ATTEND LECTURES.
