Nice guy. Takes advantage of the whole class time to talk/teach history. gives study guide for tests, so as long as you know everything on study guide youll do fine on each test. very approachable!
be prepared TO FALL ALSLEEP IN THIS CLASS. Take this class if and only if you are going to be awake. He lectures the whole hour and uses the same tone of voice all hour that can make class very boring. but he does give study guides for tests.
As long as you take notes in class and follow his study guides you should do fine in his class.
nice guy, fun subject matter, I recommend
The most boring class ever. I did bad because I couldn't pay attention it was so boring. He didn't like me cause I asked my friend what time it was once. Maybe its not as bad if you don't take it as a night class. 3 hours your dread every week.
I thought it was a very informative class and if you listened to what would be on his test it was an a.
Extrememly easy class as long as you come and take notes.Gives review sheets that are basically the test. Grades papers pretty easy too.
Dr. Wegner is a very nice man and he is a very fair grader.
Very knowledgable; lectures very organized and knew the materiakl off the top of his head every lecture. Is a nerdy history expert but makes it interesting, id take him again
My favorite teacher! I learned so much from him, he is great. If you get the chance you should take his course!
Lectures are boring but very informative- don't bother buying the book, all the information you need to ace the test is provided through lectures. As long as you show up and stay awake (not as easy as it sounds *-*) you'll do fine. He's the typical nerdy history prof and he talks in a monotone, which can get kinda boring, but he really loves histry
sweats alot...but he is a pretty damn cool guy
Very boring class, but if you take good notes, you'll be fine in the class. He has no variety in his lectures, but he's a great guy
Class is extreamly borring, however gives study guids that are the test question for question. Very very easy, just do the study guides.
Wegner was the hardest professor I've had at EMU. I almost failed his class. He takes attendence so make sure you go. He makes the material extremely boring and I always fell asleep in his class
This guy is kinda strange, but knows his stuff. Do not buy the book, take extremely good notes and come to class EVERYDAY. He gives study guides, just know the entire study guide, and you're good to go.
Wegner is an odd man of sorts in the class room but when you like to discuss something about your person effort in class ie grades His lectures are wonderful everything he talks about is helpful to his study guides which are basically TRUELY NEEDED FOR EXAMS also obtain info from book if stuck Great class! and a great professor
This guy knows his stuff. You will have to take alot of notes but you wont need to buy or read the book. He gives study guides that are almost exactly like his exams. recommended
Wow, I actually like history now. Very helpful and interesting. He assigns a research paper, not bad. I needed help finding info on my topic and he returned next class w/7 sources! Everything they say is true. Great teacher and class.
This class was boring, but if you go to class every day and take good notes you should do well in his class. The study guide that he gives is exactly like the test.
Wegner is very easy, he kind of reminds me of the teacher from Ferris Buller's Day Off. But other than being very monotone and boring, his tests are very easy. They are all multiple choice and follow exactly to the study guide. Just basically memorize the study guide and you should be good! Have fun!
When you think of a typical college class, you're probably thinking of this guy's class. Straight lecture, a couple pages of notes a day, occasional slides and transparencies in an attempt to break the monotony, three tests and a paper. Not a bad class by any means - I prefer lecture classes - and pretty easy. Oh, and he needs a new hairstyle.
I would not recommend this class or professor if you like history. This man can took the revolutionary wart and made it as boring as watching a quorum call on CSPAN.
Best lecture I've taken yet. Stays on target with a structured presentation that makes note-taking easy. He lists "Retrieving The American Past" as a required book, but it is simply primary source documents. If you want to save money, use the Halle library online databases (like JSTOR) to look up the questions from the study guides.
This guy knows his history for sure. Don't miss class because you'll be way behind. All you need to do is take the notes from his lecture. He gives study guides and the exams match them perfect. Exams based on his lectures, not the text. Not very good at relating to students. Comes off as a jerk to students. Keep quiet, take notes, you'll do fine.
Prof Wegner teaches history as bluntly and truthfully as possible. Instead of sounding like a text book, he adds personality to what he is saying. Classes consist of lectures and slides. He is usually very frazzled and can come off as a prude sometimes. FILL OUT THE STUDY GUIDES! They are exactly like the exams. Easy A if you pay attention!
I agree completely with the person below me. He was a fantastic professor, he really knew his stuff. You will fly through the tests if the study guides are followed, and you will fly through the study guides if you pay attention in class and take thorough notes. It is usually pretty easy to tell what will be on the test.
Never did I think I would be capable of enjoying a history class...I've now taken 3 classes with him! John Wegner knows so much about the subjects he's teaching, it's amazing. He tells stories and interesting facts to engage and fascinate even the most amateur history students. I would recommend any of his classes to anyone
His class can be interesting and boring sometimes. He teaches very well and explains matters in details and he tells you what you need to know so that you don't write down junk notes. Prior to tests, he may also give out study guides. The study guides are similar to the tests so if you study it, you're very likely to pass.
good class. easy, just pay attention or read the book.
It is definitely mandatory that you attend this class! Or just read all of the chapters. He gives out study guides every exam and you should always fill them out because they are exactly like the exam. His questions on the exam can get pretty tricky sometimes. Can be a boring class but hey if you need the credit...
John Wegner is a great professor. He makes history interesting with his random tidbits and fun facts that he incorporates into every lecture. Study guides are given prior to the exams making it clear what you need to know. Attendance is not mandatory but you need to go since most of the exams are based on his lectures. Great guy!
THIS CLASS IS HARD. PAY ATTENTION AND ATTEND CLASS REGULAR BUT IT STILL WONT HELP YOU PASS. HE LECTURES OFF THE TOP OF HIS HEAD AND LOSES TRACK HIS SELF
This class was great. Teacher was very fair. Study guide contained exact same info that was asked on exams. I would love to take one of his classes again.
He lectures during every class which can get boring but if u pay attention and take good notes u will do well. His exams are exact from the study guide so if u do the study guide n study u will definately learn a lot and do well on the tests.
Would not recommend this class online. For a 100-level course, the demands were RIDICULOUS! I've done less work for 400 level classes. Plus, assessments were loosely based upon assigned readings (i.e. lecture) The worst.
He gives you a study guide that is basically the exact test so its impossible to do bad! for those on here that said he was hard thats because you probably didnt take good notes and attend EVERY class! That is mandatory. take good notes, come to class, stay awake, do the study guide..you will do well!! oh and dont chew gum he hates that (lol)
Online class, look his weeks to respond to emails. Test are during the weekend, takes a long time to grade. Every week do a 3/4 page essay and discussion, he wont tell you what you did wrong on essays so you cant fix it for next time. Is always behind and makes excuses. Exams are very hard, long lectures to read 1-2 times a week
John just isn't a good online teacher, the assignments are all busy work and he is a super slow grader. He always finds some flaw with your essay even if you change it up each time. The online exams are very long and ridiculously difficult.
Online course - homework due weekly - though not always on the same day. Weekly essay and post - no textbook but I filled a 3 inch binder with all of the printed lectures. Use the exam study guides - test is almost exactly from that. He always gave feedback on essays - cite sources in the essays for full credit!
i missed one day of class and it really hurt me on my first exam, i never missed a day afer that and each exam got better. always come to class because he covers so much in one sitting
This class was not hard at all. The only problem I have with the professor is that he gave me the wrong final grade. I contacted him right after I noticed the grade was wrong. Nine months latter I'm still in the process of getting it fixed. He has been no help! I was basically told that he was to busy to help me.
Make sure you attend class, all material comes from there. Take copious notes, and read the assigned readings. His lectures are extremely dry and get old quick. Topics covered were not interesting. Few assignments, make sure to do well on anything graded or your in trouble.
There's so much info in H313(I had 8pgs of notes everyday)! He has some visual slide shows, but the rest is up to your note-taking skills.4exams &1 paper (=400 pts).DON'T MISS A CLASS!I busted my butt &went to office hours &received a better grade than most ppl did; B+ (most ppl had C's &below)!Study guides written exactly like exams.Exams~70 Qs ea.
Easy going professor with a lot of knowledge. Attendance is mandatory (based on notes, plus a bump up in grade if you are there to sign the sign in sheet). He uses he owns text book (a collection of stories). Exams are just like his study guides. Students have to write one paper as well (not hard at all). I recommend everyone to take him. Nice guy!
Attendance is not mandatory, but there is a sign in sheet and he boosts your grade at the end if he sees that you haven't missed much. Requires one research paper in which he is not very clear in the instructions. Missing one day can kill you on the exams. His study guides are completely consistent with the material on the exams.
Lectures can get a bit dull and if you miss any class it would be hard to catch back up. 1 term paper in this class (graded easily as long as you have a few sources) Test study guides match the tests almost exactly in order
His lectures are pretty exhausting but it is very easy to get a good grade in this class. Take through notes until he gives out the study guide, then just answer the questions as he lectures. There are never any questions on the test that aren't on the study guide. I suggest using flashcards. One paper, no page requirement. Easy class.
I really enjoyed the way he lectured--throwing in his personal opinions and jokes that helped certain dates and names stand out in the students' minds. I would certainly recommend taking a class from him... I tried to get Michigan History with him this year but the class was too late.
Class was all lecture based and attendance is crucial to do well on tests. The study guides are word for word on the exams and he gives review days. 3 tests & 1 research paper is the class so make sure you do good on those. Attend almost all classes and he'll boost your grade. Nice professor!
MUST GO TO CLASS. 3 tests and 1 paper. Take good notes. study guide questions are word for word test questions. Is not too helpful when you email him. Go to class and you will do a lot better and he will give you a better grade.
Print out and complete the study guides thoroughly and study them and you will do just fine. Three exams, one paper. Exams match study guides perfectly. The paper was graded easily, all you have to do is research and have some semblance of logical order. By no means a difficult class. Pay attention and take notes. Good professor, would recommend.
Knows the history very well. Class consisted of three exams (which he provides study guides for) and a research paper. If you put the work into the class you'll do good. If not you'll struggle. He graded fairly.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE COURSE. It consist of heavy loads of reading that for the most part do not help you write your essay for the unit (which you do for every unit). the lectures are written pompously. THE TESTS ARE HORRIBLE! there is only three but they are worth half your grade. the questions are minutiae, and are all in double negatives
This class is completely lecture based. You go to class and take notes while he lectures for the entire class time. 3 exams and one paper all semester. You get a study guide for each exam. It just gets boring taking notes for so long, but isn't difficult to pass.
This one of the harder history classes I have taken at EMU. He is very knowledgeable and a very likeable person. All tests are lecture based with a few questions from some online readings. If I didn't come across this class on Study Blue I probably would have struggled a bit more. 3 tests and one paper. I believe I ended with a B.
He's a great professor, very passionate. There was confusion on what time I was to take an exam by and I missed it. I emailed him right away and he allowed me to take it for full credit. All readings are his typed lectures, or articles, NO BOOK! Essay and discussion for each module. Read everything do the work and its an easy, interesting class
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE! There are 18 chapters over 12 weeks, that means a chapter every 5 days w/ a paper & discussion each. The readings are ridiculously long & the essay prompts don't relate at all. His grading is nonsensical & inconsistent & gives 0 feedback. The tests are 75 questions and take 3 hours. Absolutely unnecessary
The worst class I have possibly ever taken. Lectures are so boring and no visual aids. very hard to concentrate and bounces around. Grades easy on paper but very hard on exams. Must read all of the readings and study for hours on hours to even do okay on his exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
He comes to class and talks a lot. He expects you to remember a lot of what he says, and he talks pretty fast. There's also plenty of readings online that he tests you on. He also doesn't put grades online until the very very end.
This is truly the worst class I have ever taken. No matter how hard you study or try it's impossible to do well. Class averages on all 3 exams ranged lower than 62%. Lecture is painful. He jumps around everywhere, and you have to non stop write for an hour and fifteen minutes because he's the only way you get your information for the exams.
This class was absolutely awful. Wegner lectures off the top of his head and no matter how many pages of notes you take or the countless hours you spend studying or reading his ridiculous readings you will not pass. All three of his exams averaged to a 60% for the entire class. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!
Avoid this instructor at all costs. Every week you are assigned a lecture to read 80+ pages which consists of 40+ pages of his own writing and 3 other articles of his choice. Then a discussion and essay. Exams are IMPOSSIBLE! He also changes due dates and is rude when you email him. I am a sraight A student and most likely will fail this course.
This class actually would be better with a text book. The readings are ridiculous and material no has relevancy to K-8 teachers. Little feedback or communication. . He has proven himself to be unreliable and "absent minded" to the detriment of his students' grades. Highest grade on the last exam was a 83%. I got an 81% and studied my butt off.
DO NOT TAKE! The online class consists of 18 essays (!!), 18 discussion board posts and replies, and tests. I'm a straight A student and don't understand his petty grading. The whole course, I never got higher than a 12.5 out of 15 on his essays, which require you to read 15 pages of lecture material to respond to. There are much better professors
If youre looking for a prof. with little interest in communicating with students hes your guy. Lectures all class and hates questions during the lecture. I emailed him about retaking an exam during a family emergency and he never acknowledged it. Gives you several readings for each section with at least 14 pages for each reading. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Not even 1/2 way into the semester, I regret taking him. Lecture reading for e/module (minimum of 25-27 pages) along with two additional outside sources. There is a discussion board for each as well as a short essay. He has made rude comments on my essays, which I don't even understand the prompts for in the first place. ALWAYS changes due dates.
I took HIS313 online so I did not personally meet Professor Wegner, but he seemed very nice. There was no textbook, but all the lectures were done like a power point. There is an essay due every week along with an online discussion
Prof Wegner seems like a really nice guy, but this class was not for me. I am a full time student and work and do not have time to read his 30+ pages of lectures weekly, along with multiple documents that are also 25-30+ pages. He is understanding if you have to turn in work late. This class overall just takes a lot of time and effort.
Took History 123 with him online and was an awful class. We had 18 essays that were due each week that is to be done on his lectures and supplemental docuements on the topic we're on. Only problem is is that his lecture are 30 pages long and supplements around 15. Aside from this time sink portion, his exams are ridiculously hard and specific
His tests are so hard. No matter how many notes you take its still not enough. He lectures the whole class period, and you need to write down everything he says. Thats the hardest I worked for a B- in my life.
Great class. We have reading but it's not a textbook, it's reading written by him. Thought it would be worse than a textbook at first but I actually liked it a lot better. 18 units within the class, a discussion and essay (1 page) for each. However, you only have to do 10 of the 18 essays which was sweet. Lax on due dates. Gives good feedback.
He's nice and REALLY knows his stuff, but his lectures are 98% oral. He'll show a powerpoint with some pictures and some names, and will write a few terms on the board, but it's 98% him just ranting on about the topic. Also, this is supposed to be a HYBRID class and his idea of that is having online readings instead of a book.
Your whole semester grade is based on only 5 things and 4 are exams and are very hard and specific (you also have 30+ pages of readings along with lecture) and if you miss one class you are screwed. The paper was ok but he's not very clear what he is grading on. Not great at communicating. Do NOT take this class, you and your GPA will regret it.
3 exams, one paper If you don't read the assigned readings you won't pass
He sends out the study guide a day before the test and is very disorganized. I would not recommend him to an incoming freshmen.
(World History to 1500) Its not possible to get higher than a B on the exams, the class average is a D. Every class is a lecture and he talks so fast that you'll only get half of the information you need. He gives a study guide but they aren't very helpful in the exam. Lots of difficult online reading.
Wegner is an ok professor. He has discussion due every 6 days which really mixed me up. His lectures are also very dense with between 15-25 pages to read a week. Some of the reading was interesting and some was a bit boring. There are 3 tests and they tend to be a bit complicated and is very tough grading papers.
Everything in this class is presented orally by lecture. He occasionally writes terms on the board, but there is no clear outline of what exactly you need to know. On the test he asks questions about tiny details that he said. This was a 100 level class that feels like a 400 level. He is knowledgeable but a terrible professor.
I really enjoyed this class. The professor lectures all class so if you cant handle that dont take him. I really liked all of the lectures. If you like history you will like him. Hes very knowledgeable. Its graded on 3 tests and 1 research paper.
He is a very understanding person and very knowledgeable. The hardest part about the class is knowing what to write down for notes. He lectures from his own notes and does not give the class access to them. As long as you are attentive you will do fine. His lectures are intriguing and interesting, i enjoyed him very much.
During the first few days a select group of people (myself included) showed up to the wrong classroom because he failed to tell everyone the classroom switched, and we were marked down for those absences. John is very condescending and not open to constructive criticism at all. Class average always a D and he doesn't respect his students.
I took this class thinking it would be easy like normal history classes, but it was not. There are 17 modules and you have to write essays on 9 of them, which he grades pretty harshly with a discussion each week. Tests are hard but he gives you a study guide that is basically the test. Doesn't give good feed back on essays even if he marks you down
If you're a history major, be sure to check John out. He's excellent at teaching and adds in fun tidbits of info every lecture.
professor Wagner was a great professor. There was a lot of reading involved but the lectures were pretty interesting. Grading was clear and he was very quick to respond with an answer. All information was provided
This professor was amazing. He was super accommodating and very kind for online. His lectures consist of a word document with a typed lecture with pictures, and side documents to read about the topic you are learning. Then you write an essay and a discussion. The class is a fair amount of work, but if you make a good schedule, you're fine.
This was the hardest classes I took at EMU. I usually get all A's and I struggled in this class. 3 exams and one paper. DO THE READINGS! This professor just lectures the whole time and you need to write almost everything he says down because you will be tested on it and the readings. Class average on two exams were D's one was an E.
He obviously knows his info and is very knowledgable on LOTS of things, but he is not a good teacher. Entire course is 3 exams and 1 paper. Lectures the ENTIRE time so fast you can barely write anything down. The only way to get a good grade on the exam is to literally write down everything he says. If you miss lectures, you just wont pass.
I loved Professor Wegner however I could see why some would not. His classes are only lectures and graded by three exams and a paper at the end of the year. Take extensive notes and show up to every class or you will not pass. His exams have questions on them that cover specific minute details. Overall he's a nice professor but his class is hard.
Do not take a class with him. He only lectures with no powerpoints. You solely write what he says out of his mouth. You are only graded on three exams, and a paper.
Professor Wegner is a good teacher. If you want to pass the class you have to show up every time and take good notes. The class is only ever lectures and your final grade is based on 3 tests and 1 paper all worth 25% of your grade
John's lectures are extremely boring and you take notes all class. If you miss anything he says you probably won't get a great grade on his exams. Although his class was difficult for me, if you email him he will make accommodations for you and offer extra credit/advice.
His classes is lecture from the start to the end!!! Please Please Please write down notes. He talk an thousands miles per hour so its kind of hard. If you don't want too take notes, wait until he give the study guide then go back on the recorded zoom to fill out your study guide. To me this the best best you don't write down unnecessary
All lecture BUT he is very willing to help you out if you have any questions or missed a class. Grades are based on 3 exams, but he lets you take them online and has a detailed study guide that goes question by question. While it is all based on lecture, he is an amazing lecturer to listen to if you let yourself get into the topic a bit.
Wegner is one of the most knowledgeable professors at EMU. His lectures are very dense and fast paced, but that's expected in a history course. He grades off of about three exams and a short paper on the topic of your choice which he grades very easily. If you want to learn more about history definitely take his class.
Overall average class and professor. Professor Wegner is nice and seems to care about students, however, his lectures can be very long, and get lost in information.
To start class was delayed 20 minutes every single class due to his tech issues. He was behind due to health reasons (perfectly fine) but refused to adapt his teaching plans and crammed everything in 2 weeks before the semester ended. He didn't get to cover units and wanted us to read a 35-page written report each after classes ended.
For a gen ed class this is the most work I have ever had to do with papers every week and discussions every week also. Be prepared for the exams that no matter if you read all of the lecture (that total up to about 35 pages per week) you will still fail. The information that he expects you to know is insane. Every question is all of these except.
Essentially, it's like showing up to a podcast that you're graded on. He knows his stuff and is fairly interesting if you care about history, but he will just get up at the front of the class and lecture at you for the entirety of the class period.
Very kind professor, very knowledgeable. Grade is made up of three exams and a paper that he grades fairly easy. Very lecture heavy, so you can't really miss any classes. The exams are pretty difficult even if you pay attention and take really good notes, the questions are worded poorly and the exams are 85-100 questions and take about 3 hours.
I really enjoyed attending Dr. Wegner's classes. The class consisted of pretty much just lectures to take notes on, making attendance important. However, they are worth coming to since they are extremely informative and pretty interesting. He graded only a few things, I believe three quizzes and a research paper. A very easy class to take!
For a gen ed course the amount of reading I did was truly insane. I was interested in the material so it wasn't the end of the world. 3 essays throughout the entire course and quizzes for each module. Overall, not horrible but not the easiest.
Was a good professor for an online class, 1 assignment a week which was a quiz for each module. I didn't read a single whole lecture and still did fine in the class using control F to look up the answers in the readings. If you decide to read there is a lot of reading to do. 3 papers the whole class, did all last minute and got good grades on all.
This class was extremely hard and stressful. When lecturing this professor went super fast and never slowed down. Not to mention the lectures were boring (all the class was were lectures). On top of the lectures you have to read a lot (30+ pages per week). The exams for this class were also very difficult. DO NOT TAKE or you will regret it!!!
The whole class is lecture, but he knows what he's talking about. There were 3 tests in the whole semester and an essay. I thought I would fail at first after my first two bad grades but I talked to him and he's one of the nicest teachers I've met in a while. He offered extra credit and I did it. He's caring towards his students and the content.
Professor Wegner's lectures are dense and fast-paced, but engaging. Attendance is crucial, as notes are key for the 3 exams and paper. unstuckstudy helped me prepare by summarizing lectures and providing practice questions.
If you have to, take this class online. Lectures every week with very, very long documents to read. The questions on the tests seemed almost impossible to answer correctly. Discussion post every week. Easy schedule to follow which I feel like saves the course a bit.
