Lectures are kind of boring, small group discussions
No Comments
very smart, good lectures
It wasn't the easiest class, but he was helpful. He is a pretty easy grader as long as you try.
Worst class ever. Honestly made me reconsider grad school. Uninteresting, wears his bias on his sleeve, in no way enjoyable or educational.
Definitely had his own opinions, but an interesting teacher. Had him the first time 350 was taught, which wasn't fun, but not his fault. Class has been restructured since then, is probably better.
Very intellegent, yet opinionated. Very enjoyable in class and as an advisor. As a teacher overall he is good, but this specific class is another story..not his fault just very deep material.

He knows a ****load of info... and expects you to also. He is demanding yet fair. Lectures are insightful and deep, maybe too deep. Oh yea, caffine is good before most classes!
Dr. Williams is a very intelligent professor. He knows his information and how to explain it effectively. His grading is firm, but it is encouraging and reasonable. One of my favorites.
Very intelligent but he is arrogant and does not offer help when needed. His instructions for group work is unclear.
I hated his class with a passion. He made rude comments on my papers and was extremely unhelpful. He is a smart man, but a HORRIBLE teacher. I hated him and I will never ever take another class with him as long as I live. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
He was very hard, very unhelpful, and he wasn't a very good teacher.
worst class ever. I couldn't wait for the semester to end. He gives some extra credit though.
He expects everyone to know as much about history as he does. He is knowledgable, but if you aren't a history buff like he is, I wouldn't bother taking his class. He criticizes writing style as well. I didn't like him. I wouldn't take him again.
This class was HARD!! He's fair though. As he is also my advisor, we clashed hard. But i've found if you stand your ground on an issue, he will respect it. Be prepared to learn about everything and more....be prepared to keep up!
Considers students with less interest in his field to be directly insulting and disrespecting his profession, graded way too harshly
If you want to learn a lot take it, if you want an A don't unless you are prepared to work your a$$ off

He knows his topics very well, has had life experience within his topics, and is always willing to help as long as you ask him at the appropriate time, are clear in what you are asking, and willing to work with him. I recomend taking any of his classes!
I admit, there is a lot of reading. However, if you keep up relatively well and prepare for the test, you're fine. As long as you back up your argument on the essay tests (he lets you use the inside of the bluebook for notes) he's a pretty fair grader. His passion for history is contagious.
I took a seminar class with him on documentary films, but he was very insightful and made our discussions interesting.
Great guy and knows his stuff real well. Easy grader and covers the material very well and with great interest. Guest speakers could be reviewed before allowing them in, though.
Out of all of the lecturers I thought he was the most interesting and clear.
it wasnt a blow off class but his knowledge makes it more interesting, tough but good teacher.
He's kind of a **** but his class is easy. He's not hot at all, by the way, so don't get your hopes up or anything.
He was the most interesting lecturer, yes. And the hottest. I gained more knowledge from his lectures than from the other individuals. I don't know how he handles his class discussion, but as a lecturer he is cool.
He is a really nice guy to begin with and he knows what he is talking about. Out of all the lectures, his was the most interesting and easiest to follow.
My friends and I called him eye candy. Very hot. When you get passed appearences, he is oe of the smartest people you will ever meet. Out of all the lecturers, his was the easiest to follow and understand. If you dont understand something, he's more than willing to sit down and break it down with you so that you do understand.
you have to try a little to get an A in his class. Participation, something i didnt do, is major. very nice to look at, very knowledgeable, and helpful. also has a cute acccent

He grades a little odd on his exams, which are all essay based. He knows his stuff and is interesting. Talk to him during office hours before the exam or during class to find out what he is looking for otherwise you may bomb the first exam. He is more than willing to help if you have questions. Take his section of Civ102, he's the best of the three
Wretched professor
Total jerk, hated the class, material was difficult, and he did an awful job of explaining. Never take him. He sucks.
Best Western Civ teacher EVER! NEVER thought I'd get an A in this class, but I did! Discussion on Fridays forces you to read the material, which is nice for those of us who would slack otherwise. He really made the class interesting! SO cute too, unfortunately gay, but whatever! We can still look and enjoy!
He thinks he knows everything, but clearly doesn't. He loves his PhD. He is nice, but tough.

Really tough grader, but he wants you to do so good!! If you want to get a good grade, take ALL of his suggestions and go see him if you don't understand something. He's really nice and always willing to help.
Well I'll put it this way, he is a demagogue he does not want your view is on the subject he wants you to swallow his hook line and sinker. I got an A in the class but trust me it involved enough work that it hardly seemed worth it, I learned near nothing from this class even though he used decent (if too many) reading materials. BEWARE!
Wretched man, Wretched class...unhelpful, wrote rude comments on my papers, and didn't explain anything. His lectures to the group were actually decent, it was his section of the class that was awful. Don't take him, take someone else. He was my only C in college.
Dr. Williams is very difficult! He makes the mistake of thinking that everyone loves history even though it is a gen. ed. and he teaches the course that way. He makes an already difficult subject even worse and I will never take a class with him again!
Professor Williams is so nice! His tests for Western Civ are a lot easier than other sections. You only have 10 m.c. and then an essay. Explains everything you need to know to do well!
Great teacher. I enjoyed the class itself. Most of his discussions are interesting, but I hated the work that had to be done for it. Way too much reading! Studying for the exams was horrible! The most difficult class I've taken yet. He does offer extra credit though. I haven't received my grade yet; I struggled between B and C.
I was a little skeptical about the class already because i HATE history.. But i liked the class, lot of reading but is necessary to understand what is goin on in lecture.. He is a phenomenal teacher!! Always there to help, and yes i got an A.. Quizzes are easy, tests are a little difficult but he gives the essay questions to you to help you out...
Go to class, do the reading, participate, and you will be fine. Tests require a lot of preparation. He's an interesting lecturer!
Very good lecturer for was an interesting class. Very helpful especially during office hours. I would highly recommend this professor and this class (if it is taught again)!
One of my favorite classes. He makes material that otherwise might not be so interesting intriguing. If you go to class, participate, and study for the tests you will be fine. Notes are helpful but the most important thing is to spend a lot of time on your outlines before tests!
Nice guy, knows his stuff--harsh on grading compositions/papers, but it all helps you in the long run.
good professor, and yes, he's gay: get over it! It in no way affects his teaching. He's extremely kind.
Amazing professor. So smart and dedicated. Easy on the eyes :) Sadly gay :( This class was hard, but I learned so much. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. Start your essay tests early. Run you ideas for your essay tests by him. It helps :)
Very nice professor in a class that was rather stressful at times. Unlike other professors who teach this course, he gave us a topic to focus on. I didn't see this as a problem since you didn't have to spend too long deciding on your particular event. Very strict on citations, but needs to be and does a good job explaining them when asked questions
He is really easy to talk to and gives out tons of extra credit. But he grades weird on papers and test and is really bad at asking questions. If you do not like to read do not take his class. He also has a quiz every friday open notes
Dr. Williams is very knowledgeable and nice. His class is well structured. There is a lot of reading, but the textbook is pretty good. Tests and quizzes are open book/open note and extra credit is frequently available. However, he grades papers a little too subjectively. Other than that, I highly recommend his class.
Hardest grader I've ever had. EVER! He also has an extremely short temper. He's a good guy and I've learn a lot from his class.
Dr. Williams is very knowledgeable about history. He will try to include all of his students in class discussions, and he values everyone's opinion about the class material. Read the pocket style manual, read The Humanistic Tradition, sparknotes the rest, and you'll be fine.
Interesting teacher. Looks at a subject from all angles culturally. Tests (all essay) are difficult but you get the questions ahead of time so it's not tough to prepare. He's not easy but I recommend the class.
He's not bad. The only complaint I have is that he makes you feel stupid for not holding super-liberal views. I'm pretty liberal to begin with. He also allows some students to dominate discussions, especially students he has had in the past. It's hard to get a word in.
Dr. Williams is brilliant. This is a very difficult class, both in subject matter and workload, but it is worth it. Come to class prepared or you will be totally lost. Class is heavy on discussion. Cynic's BEWARE!
He was so helpful when I came to him during his office hours. All my questions were answered, and he helped me in developing my outlines and writing. This class is NOT EASY though. The workload is heavy, so don't take this class if you're not ready to do a ton of work. Other than that, my experience was enjoyable. Oh and Prof. Williams is HOT!!!
taught off of slides. would not post them. very interested in the material. liked it when students participated. essay tests werent too hard.
Williams is awesome. The class is engaging. There is a ton of discussion so do the reading and prepare. Tests can be tough if you dont prepare. One of the best lecturers at Bradley. Tons of reading.
This class is taught at a level way above a freshmen level class should be. Professor Williams is too concerned spreading his own agenda and living in his own world. Take an easy teacher like Kamfl and stay away from this guy. Don't stress yourself out on a 100 level class if you don't have to.
I had Williams for the Foreign Cinema Honors Seminar. He was great. He is very nice and never belittles students. He encourages a very open and friendly classroom atmosphere. He grades fairly and his expectations are clear. Take his class at the first opportunity!
NOT an east professor but he is AWESOME! Passionate about most topics which kept me interested. You have to keep up with the reading!!!
Here is the deal. He is a really nice guy but man he expect a lot. You will write at least 5 papers, AT LEAST. All of which range 4-12 pages each. Also, you have to a crazy amount of reading. His class can be interesting but again the bad out ways the good. Stay away from his class if you are just filling a gen ed unless you have a lot of time
The class has a considerable amount of reading. As far a gen eds go, the class is more difficult that it needs to be, but it is not impossible. He really makes you work to earn an A, but otherwise he is not an incredibly harsh grader. Be prepared to participate in class discussion, by doing the assigned reading. Be sure to read!
My favorite professor this semester. While his class does require a significant amount of work, I felt very challenged in his class. The class environment is very open and he works hard to foster group discussion. He is one of the friendliest men Ive met and he is so eager for his students to learn and to succeed. Id recommend him any day.
I was so nervous to go to this class after reading these reviews. However, he is a great professor that should not be feared. He is not mean, rude, or inconsiderate. You don't write papers all the time. We've written one paper so far and it was 4 pages. He's a great teacher and is really passionate about his class!
Really nice guy. Go to class and read. A lot of reading and stressful essay exams, but he gives you the questions in advanced. He expects a lot from you.
Dr. Williams is a genuinely nice guy and cares a lot about all of his students. Class participation is a must, so if you're like me...might want to stay away from this class. I hardly ever talk and it affects my grade...20% is based off participation. Hard grader on essay tests and papers, but if you make all changes he says to, you'll do fine.
Williams is a very good teacher, but is an unbearably harsh grader when it comes to essays. He was a critic in his younger days, and it shines here. This is an upper level course, but students should not be expected to put out doctoral level work. Absolutely ridiculous. Show up or you won't pass, and by all means, make sure you do your readings!!!!
I took as many of his classes as I could when I was at Bradley because he was a great teacher. He's a really tough grader, but at the end of it you'll come out with amazing writing skills, which is what he wants. If you skip a class you're behind because so much is covered at once, but it's all interesting and presented well. I'll miss him!
He is a really great professor and always extremely knowledgeable on the subject and if you have a question that he doesn't have the answer to then he'll look it up after class and email you the answer. Just be prepared for all class discussions as participation makes up a big portion of your grade.
Really just an all around great professor. He had great knowledge of the subject and really cared about it as well. Also, as long as you participate in class discussion, you will do just fine
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! His rating would have been a lot higher because he is a great lecturer, but this class caused me so much stress. It is NOT worth it! He destroyed my confidence as a writer, and I still push off writing papers because he has forever placed a mental block in my head. Also he assigns INSANE amounts of reading! BEWARE!
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE A FULL STUDENT. He is very passionate about what he is teaching but assigns SO MUCH READING that is required because sometimes there are quizzes and he grades participation. There are 1 paper and 3 tests and he requires A LOT from you. It's just not realistic taking into consideration that we have other classes.
You have to read to pass this class. Participation is a lot of the grade, and you have a quiz every day (j-term). The exams are the exact questions from the quiz that you get the right answers to and get to keep. So much extra credit offered. Great lecturer, really has a lot of knowledge on the subjects. Definitely recommend this for western civ
As a person he's a really nice guy, but the comments about reading isn't truly necessary. Yeah there is a lot of reading assigned but to get a solid grade his lectures and slides do the trick. He does like to teach about film study and appreciation, which doesn't make sense in a Western Civilization course, but he insists that it is relevant.
This professor expects you to read multiple chapters before class. He gets upset if you do not talk multiple times and cite the text. The tests are difficult and involve knowing names, dates, and more. John Williams has shown up to teach in short shorts before and he takes himself very seriously. I would rate a 0 or negative if possible.
Dr. Williams is a great professor who gives good lectures and leads great discussions (if you and your classmates are willing to participate). There is a lot of work, but the tests are really easy and he makes the class very interesting.
He is unnecessarily mean when it comes to grading papers, some of the comments made me actually tear up.
The way he presented himself in lecture never made me think he would make such belittling comments on my papers.
I would strongly recommend staying clear of any of Professor William's classes, he is a interesting professor but lackluster in his teaching and constantly stifles creativity always believing his view to be the only correct one.
Dr. Williams is very straightforward in what he wants you to know. If you look over the lectures and skim the readings you will get a good grade. The only thing I will say is that he is not always the nicest. Generally a fine class, especially if you're a liberal arts major. But as somebody else says, it costs $0 to be a nice person.
sometimes he believes his answer is the only correct answer. However, if you write what he says in class on paper, he will tell you it is wrong. (did it to me twice) reading is extremely heavy in this class and YOU MUST PARTICIPATE EVERY CLASS. he changes grades at will for participation, and does not hesitate to shut down any comment you offer
Was surprised to see so much hate. Not a history major but I enjoyed his class structure & topics. If you're decent at soaking up info & writing, then you'll probably do fine & enjoy it. I did well w/o doing all of the reading but u will fail if you read none. If you're trying to keep your head down and get thru the class he's probably not for you.
Be prepared to read and take notes on what you read. The essays that we wrote needed to be thought out and planned. Prepare to explain in detail why you wrote something in the papers while using the class discussion and readings as evidence. Overall I enjoyed the course and would take one with Professor Williams again.
Expect hours of reading in preparation for every class. Even if you like history you don't want to take this class. Discussion is every class and you must talk ALOT to get participation points they are not just given. Tests are over material from the huge textbook not what you discuss in class. You need to read every page of the book in detail.
Dr. Williams was a very good professor to have. However, do not expect to coast through the class without doing the readings and receive a satisfactory grade. Almost all scheduled class time was devoted to discussing the assigned readings and receiving feedback from Dr. Williams. I would highly recommend signing up for his class.
Great professor, really cares about the success of his students. Exams aren't too bad if you've done the readings, but there are quite a few readings to be done in this class. Make sure to stay on top of the course work to ensure your grade. Classes are discussion-heavy, and there is a grade for participation so make sure to add to discussions!
Just the worst. Loves his own voice. Get ready to spend 80% of your semester on his class.
Good class. Very insightful. LOTS of reading and discussion.
Participation matters a lot if you take the discussion based class. Helps to get good at reading dense material and extracting main points. Always study PowerPoints and if you take good notes use those too for studying. Strict grader for essays.
This course syllabus changed weekly. Your own perspective does not matter in this class. Participation grade makes no sense. Leaves petty and rude comments on essay. Sends emails in the middle of the night. Also sent passive aggressive emails about exam grades and behavior that were entirely unnecessary. Likes to hear himself talk. Don't recommend.
Dr. Williams' CIV113 class is demanding but worthwhile. Participation is key, and the workload is heavy, but his engaging lectures and helpful study tools like unstuck AI make it manageable. With dedication, you can excel in this thought-provoking course.
Has good lectures and a discussion based class if your ideas already align with him. He is also a bad grader as it not only took me over a month to receive my grade I also had to manage the teachers computer incompetence. In his feedback he will also be elementary and vague.
This professor constantly asks for feedback, but does not accept opinions he does not agree with and retaliates against students in demeaning ways. He is very disorganized and has unnecessarily expectations for what the class is worth. I do not recommend this professor if you can avoid it.
This is the WORST professor I have ever had the misfortune of taking. Very degrading towards students. Very unorganized and does not do his part to help the class succeed. 0/10
Please spare yourself and do not take this course with him. He often passive aggressive and assigns so much reading to the point where I have little time to focus on other classes, especially for a 100-level class. He is extremely disorganized and is not receptive to feedback (even after asking for feedback).
