Average professor, but covers all the material well. Could stop say "So" at the beginning of every sentence :)

Wolfe uses a lot of examples, which is the most helpful in organic chemistry. His notes are logical. With his style of teaching though, it's good to have read the text before lecture to understand more of the material. Prob. good at upper-level chem
I thought Prof Wolfe was a great professor, his notes were very organized and easy to follow and he uses a lot of examples. I recommend his recitation sessions also. He's very good about wanting to help his students.
class is hard, but he teches well. very easy to follow, gives lots of examples,
Good teacher. A lot of students swear by Coppola, but Wolfe is a very good lecturer also. Class is difficult, but not because of poor teaching.
He's an average teacher, but his voice makes you want to fall asleep about 20 minutes into lecture. It helps if you read the sections before the lectures.
Very helpful and nice guy. Excellent professor as an alternative to Coppola, who is a beast. He does have a monotone, but if you are able to look past that, he has very logical notes, and is always willing to help after class.

prof. wolfe will take as much time to answer any question as someone needs, and really makes an effort to make sure that the lecture notes are clear to everyone. the class is unbelievably hard, but he helps
the only thing I got out of this class was a good nap. I would go to any Coppola lecture I could. Coppola is crazed, but he doesn't speak as though he wants you to fail. I asked him a question one day, and he couldn't explain it.
He had a monotone voice but he throws down on the chalkboard like Tupac raps. The class is hard if you don't do the coursepack or study. If you slack off, you will fail and eveyrone will laugh at you forever.
very boring and not always clear
I only had him for a short time, but in that time he spent most of it speeding through tons upon tons of notes on the board. Class sped by way too quickly. I assume that this isn't so much his fault because of the way classes are run, but the man was rushed and that sucked. In a more relaxed setting, I'm sure he's amazing.
I went to three of his lectures at the beginning of the semester and switched to Nolta because I was so bored... if that tells you anything
He is pretty boring. He often fails to explain many important concepts, probably because they come so naturally to him. On the up side, he gives excellent notes that you can easily follow in order to teach yourself the material if necessary.
I'll admit that he knows his stuff...but sorry kids...he can't teach it to you...and I don't know what the person was talking about that said he gives great notes... You should have seen his recent rendition of what he thought was a 'flow chart'. SERIOUSLY take someone else's lecture. I didn't take the advice, please don't make the same mistake.
He is always all over the place and never very clear. I found myself going to Nolta's lectures and always realizing how much he just doesn't cover. It seems like he skips over things because of time constraints but he's not completly useless.
People seem overly critical. I found that he was decent in explaining the course content and that I learned a lot. His notes are easy to follow and go over later. Nolta is nice but in my opinion overrated.
Sometimes he goes through a lot of examples without explaining them.It can be hard to keep up with his drawings. He is very good about giving you examples that show up on the test in format.
He glosses over too many topics. I listened to copolla's podcasts recently, and he's so much better than wolfe that it's ridiculous. It's not like wolfe is totally off base, it's just that he tends to neglect certain topics. This incompleteness ends up royalling screwing people over.
Clear speaker. If you like logical notes without sugar coating and bells and whistles to keep you interested (ie. Nolta), go with Wolfe.
orgo is a horrible class, and the lectures were not made better by this professor. he gave a lot of examples but never really explained concepts, so it was difficult to learn the material.
He will generally skim over a topic and then just delve straight into examples. His lecture alone is not enough to do well in this class but if you combine it with reading the book, a good GSI, or a good study group you should do alright (but you MUST do the coursepack to do well at all). Not as clear as Nolta.
Wolfe does a nice job of presenting clear and logical notes. For me, that is what I want in a lecture. Combined with a study group and the coursepack, I think that his lectures are excellent.
Everyone seems to forget about Wolfe and focus on Nolta...although she too, is excellent, they have two very different teaching styles. I personally found Wolfe's straightforward, unembellished explanations much easier to follow than her more colorful analogies. Wolfe also gives a ton of great examples.
Wolfe is a great teacher - if his style of teaching works for you. If you want straight forward notes that are easy to study, Wolfe is your man. Although he's less enthusiastic or animated than Nolta in character and teaching style, I don't say this in a reprimanding way. His lectures are logical and he's brilliant.
Wolfe is a good guy who knows his stuff. You won't have a whole lot of actual words in your notes, but you will have plenty of examples. He can be funny from time to time, especially when talking about the compounds that make up different recreational drugs.
John Wolfe was an amazing professor. I really liked his teaching style and the examples that he gave were amazing. I came into the class thinking it was going to be impossible, but it was quite the opposite. I really enjoyed the class. Also, I made individual appointments with him to go over material that I was unsure of, and he was helpful!!!!
I love him! He's one of the best lecturers I've had so far. He really knows his stuff. I managed to get by the class without reading my textbook at all because his lectures and notes were so clear =)
great
Not too many explanations, but LOTS of examples, which really helps. Pretty good lecturer; writes small though, so sit near the front.
i love john wolfe but he writes small, he tells great nerdy jokes and cant hold back his own laugh :)
This class is very difficult, but this guy is the best you could have. His notes are awesome, and his open discussions are completely worth it. He's brilliant and makes an outstanding professor.
Wolfe is a great professor. He gives many examples and is very clear. He is very willing to help students as well. He seems very light-hearted in class which makes the class seem less intense. Overall, he is very nice guy who will do his best to help you succeed. By the way, it is possible to do well in this class!
Wolfe is the man - he is def the best professor you could ever have for chem 210 and 215
Pretty good professor. His lectures are good and he goes through a lot of examples. I would go through the book though, just to make sure you get all the little points that he misses. I would recommend him over other orgo professors.
Plain and simple: Nolta is the best for Chem 210, Wolfe is the best for Chem 215. The way he organizes his lectures and writes on the board makes it very easy to follow and he always gives tons of examples. Having had Gottfried, Nolta, Wolfe, Koreeda, and Sipowska so far for chem, Wolfe was definitely one of my favorites!
Best chem professor by far (other than nolta). If you have him as your professor, you'll do well in orgo 1 or 2. Tells awesome cheesy chemistry jokes and acts like he really cares about his students. Plan your schedule around getting Wolfe if possible.
take orgo 1 and/or 2 with him!!
Wolfe is great! He was very clear, and when his lectures are used in conjunction with the book the class seems very easy. He also wrote some of the fairest exams that I've taken at this university. He's a very solid orgo professor!
Makes Organic Chemistry easy to understand. Says cheesy chem jokes sometimes, which is adorable. He's super smart and clear. Will answer questions during lecture.
Wolfe has a PhD from MIT, but he's incredibly easy to understand. I attended all of the other orgo lectures but his are always the best. He explains things well. Get him if you can!
Wolfe is a really good professor. He explains concepts really well and if you're confused he'll stop and answer questions. The exams are difficult but what else did you expect? They're written by all of the professors. Overall great prof.
Wolfe is the man. He knows his stuff. His explanations are short and to the point and he gives tons of examples. Perfect for exam preparation. After going to the open discussions, it is clear that wolfe is the best orgo prof by a long shot.
Wolfe is amazing. I was really scared to take to take orgo because I didn't do well in gen chem, but Wolfe takes you step by step through everything.
He's a great professor who really knows his chemistry. He's able to gradually increase difficulty in problems while making everything very clear. He does a great job teaching a hard class. If you can, definitely try and have him as a professor.
I loved Dr. Wolfe! Super nice, funny and very willing to answer any questions, unlike some other profs. It's also very useful that he gives tons of examples during lecture and information that will be on the exam. I heard that some other profs were giving false impressions of the exams and I'm so glad wolfe didn't do that. :) take him if possible
Wolfe is great! I went to all of his lectures and all of Noltas workshops. My notes from Wolfe are extremely organized and make sense. He is a great professor and I would highly advise taking orgo 1 with him. He's funny and tries to make it interesting. Its obviously a hard class but Wolfe is great! DO THE COURSEPACK AND JOIN A STUDY GROUP.
Amazing professor. Always kept the material interesting. Showed many examples along with explaining the concepts very well. Would crack jokes here and there. If Nolta isn't teaching orgo, then he will be definitely be the best professor to take orgo with. Always email him if you have any questions. he is more than happy to go out of his way to help
realllllly good prof, i went to all the lectures and he made everything so clear. definitely better than montgomery, which is the only other lecture i went to
Wolfe is a GREAT professor. Definitely the guy to get for Orgo 1. Obviously it's a difficult course so dont expect a walk in the park. But, Wolfe outlines his lectures extremely well. Also, word on the street he writes the exams.
Dr. Wolfe is one of the best professors here at UM. He is incredibly smart and great at explaining things. He gives you a lot of examples which will make studying for the exam better. He has a great sense of humor and is really helpful (always stays after class to answer questions). Definitely the guy to take for Orgo 1! if only he taught orgo 2!
Oustanding professor. He made one of the most unenjoyable undergraduate classes at the University tolerable. I would absolutely take another Wolfe class if I could!
Best Chemistry professor at the U of M. Everyone who took him will agree. He teaches REALLY well. I would love to take another course with him.
He was definitely the best professor for orgo 1 fall semester. Clear, organized lectures and he's an awesome person in general! My only complaint is that I wish he taught orgo 2 as well.
LOVED HIM!!! Best orgo professor out of the bunch. Explained everything clearly. Answered questions in the huge lecture hall. Although attendance is not mandatory, go to class and you will understand everything because Wolfe is amazing.
Great professor. One of the better ones teaching Orgo 1. He makes vivid use of examples, which are very useful for the exams. VERY useful. Also an experienced lecturer.
He's the fairest when it comes to writing test questions. Very clear on what you do and do not need to worry about, the class is not as bad as everyone says. Most people will get A's or B's, but you WILL have to try. Go to his coursepack reviews before tests, textbook is garbage. Join a study group. You'll get at least a B, easily.
Took his class during the summer and even at an extremely accelerated pace for a class in whichhaving time to practice is EVERYTHING... he made it possible. He didn't make the exams easier, he simply taught it well. The man is brilliant AND can get the concepts across. That is hard to find. He is a gem of a prof and I wish he taught more classes.
Really clear with explanations for mechanisms/problems. Also kind of adorable to listen to.
Professor Wolfe is the best! Very clear, very smart, and a great lecturer. I go to his OH every week and I'm taking 215 with him next semester.
Wolfe is the best teacher for 210. He filters out all the garbage information in the textbook, and explains everything in a way he knows students can understand. Has a sense of humor and is a very intelligent lecturer.
he is really helpful and the best teacher for fall term chem 210
Easily the best chem teacher for the fall of chem 210. Covers all the material efficiently and weeds out the unnecessary info the book gives. he also is the prof who makes the exams so he knows exactly what will be on them and clarifies this
The best Orgo teacher out there. He goes through the material at the perfect speed and his chalk is really neat. His lecture always fills up fast though so come early if you want a seat.
Dr. Wolfe is one of the best and smartest teachers at U of M. He explains very thoroughly and makes the class manageable. He has a great sense of humor and makes orgo less stressful. There are not any surprises on the exams- they just require lots of studying. I would definitely recommend Wolfe to anyone!!
Dr. Wolfe is easily the best orgo teacher out there after Nolta (but she isn't teaching orgo right now and it is a close call). He is clear, extremely helpful and beyond intelligent on the subject. I have attended every other lecture of the other professors, and Wolfe by far is the best. Plus, he is funny and keeps us interested.
Wolfe is the best Orgo professor (except maybe for Nolta) - he goes through everything pretty quickly, but he does a really good job of explaining it. And he makes the exams, so if he says something will/won't be on there, then you can take his word for it.
Wolfe is da bomb!! By far, he is the best Orgo professor (even better than Nolta). He is super-clear, and tells us exactly what we need to know. He cuts out the fluff in the textbook, and gives us the down-to-earth, crystal clear explanations. He makes Orgo very manageable. Simply put, he is awesome!!
I LOVE HIM. BEST TEACHER EVER.
One of the best professors at UM! He is a genius chemist and lecturer.
Class is tough but Wolfe's a great teacher. Definitely take orgo with him if you have the chance
Wolfe is the man. Great guy, great lecturer. Definitely take orgo with him if you get the chance.
Orgo is orgo. I'm not really sure how much having Wolfe helped my grade compared to the other professors, but I did enjoy going to his lectures. He spoke clearly and would sometimes made jokes which were entertaining. Studying the coursepack is by far the most important thing for passing
Dr. Wolfe is the best instructor I have had at this university. He clearly explains materials in lecture and is available for help. His teaching style is easy-going but he always finishes lecture on time. I learned so much from him as a professor and would gladly take another course with him.
I absolutely loved Dr. Wolfe. He knows exactly what he's talking about and is incredibly clear. I would suggest a study group simply because I found best friends in there and it can be fun. I went to lunch with Dr. Wolfe and he is incredibly friendly and easy-going. He really cares about his students and his jokes are the BEST.
I think Wolfe is a great teacher considering it's orgo. I'm one of those people that orgo just doesn't click, and I'm doing just fine.
Orgo II is a hard class, but Dr. Wolfe is an amazing instructor. He is clear, concise, and explains things really well. And he is extremely good-looking.
Amazing. Best professor I have ever had. Don't second guess yourself. If you can take a class with this man, its your privilege.
If you have the chance to take the organic sequence with Wolfe, absolutely do it. I had him for both semesters, and even though orgo didn't come easily to me, I couldn't have asked for a better professor. Dr. Wolfe moves at a reasonable pace, is clear and direct, and very helpful (and he is also super adorable).
Dr. Wolfe is absolutely the best orgo professor, and the best professor I've had at UM. I feel privileged to have had him for both Chem 210 and 215. He is truly brilliant, yet manages to keep his lectures extremely clear and understandable. Even better, he is funny and makes every lecture entertaining.
Best professor I've had at UM. Engaging, knowledgeable, approachable, helpful, and funny. Loves his job and is prepared for every lecture, which makes students perform well too
Wow, where do I even begin with this guy? He is by far the best professor for orgo. He is clear and explains topics amazingly. He has a great personality and is very willing to help students. His exams are also very fair. I feel sorry for those people who cannot take orgo with him. Words cannot express how great of a teacher and person he is.
Orgo is a challenging class no matter who you have, but Wolfe makes this as enjoyable as possible. He is so engaging, sweet, funny, and clear in his lectures that you don't mind going! Take orgo with him if you have the option! Oh and he's easy to look at.
do whatever you can to take orgo with wolfe. he somehow manages to make orgo fun and not intimidating and he is super engaging. its weird to think i wont have him next year after two semesters with him! seriously, go out of your way to have him
Funny, clear, and knows the material.
Go to lecture-iClickers used for points. GSIs are all instructed to grade hard but ok curve. He explains things clearly and makes lab lecture less painful. Also, good looking prof (best out of all other chem profs). He has a good sense of humor too.
One of my favorite lecturers so far at UofM, shame it was only for lab. Prompt email responses and genuinely cares about his students. The labs are actually pretty interesting but grading of worksheets can be tough at times. Put in the time and effort and you're guaranteed a good grade. Class average is set at a B+ which also helps.
Dr. Wolfe was clear, concise, and really engaging. This class made my bad experience in Chem 211 seem negligible.
Was worried about taking a high level orgo class but so worth it. Very interesting lectures and kept material interesting. Incredibly knowledgable and loves what he does. I'm even trying to get into his lab this summer. If you are a chem student, try to take a class with Dr. Wolfe.
Really great teacher. Super nice guy and does a great job of getting his students to understand the material in a stress-free environment. If you are struggling with the problem sets, just go to office hours and he will help you out. He wants everyone to do well. In his upper level courses he gives out a very generous curve.
Dr. Wolfe is the best!! Loved Chem 420 & it has a great curve. He really makes it so that you can actually learn and enjoy the problem-solving aspect without worrying about grading too much. Everyone should take a class with Dr. Wolfe
So impressed by this guy, he explains things SO clearly and builds on the class's knowledge every single lecture. He makes so much sense, but yet is just challenging enough.
Amazing lecturer!!! Clear, funny and engaging. Orgo lab lecture is generally a pain but he will actually make you WANT to attend lecture.
Professor Wolfe teaches in a very specific way that may work for some people but completely confuses everyone else. He glosses over super important topics and doesn't understand that not everyone learns things the exact same way he does.
SUCH a great professor. He really knows what he's talking about and does a great job of teaching the material, and he's always ready to help students out. He also has his own little subtle jokes which make leature a little more bearable. Highly recommend taking orgo with him
Orgo 2 is hard no matter what. Wolfe is organized and there to answer any questions. He could've been clearer with what he wanted us to know, some exams were really hard with 50% averages, others were easy with 70% averages. Overall, he was average. After Nolta, he makes you work a lot on your own.
I took the Honors version of 215 in WN16 which happened to be Wolfe's first time teaching said class. If ever there was the embodiment of the awkward yet charming intellectual it is this man. Lectures can occasionally put you to sleep and the exams are rough. Be prepared to work, work, work. Friday quizzes are usually easy though.
John is very boring and a terrible lecturer. Just read the textbook and go to GSI's office hours John is useless and not helpful. Exams are very difficult so be prepared.
Because of Nolta, it's hard to give anyone else a 5. John is a good dude and will teach you what you need to know to do well in his class. The exams are hard, but they're quite logical so they're not bad. After Nolta, he really makes you work on your own though. He's my second favorite prof in the chem department and an amazing lecturer. Take him.
You know that nerdy kid in your class that's good-natured and slightly awkward? Turn that guy into a professor and you have Dr. Wolfe. He's very intelligent and capable of answering any questions about organic chemistry. He sometimes goes a bit fast during lecture, so pay attention and make good/neat notes! Tests are hard, but reasonably hard imo.
Knows a ton about his field and loves talking about it. Even though the lectures are online, I advise going to class because he is usually good about answering questions. Overall a good teacher, tests were reasonable.
one word "amazing"
Had Wolfe for 215HH and don't regret it. 215HH is a good intro to scientific research, and he's brilliant, inoffensively honest, and if he were king, he'd do away with gradesalmost 70% of the students this term aced the class. The Honors Cup competition, HTML project, and studying for the exams all required hard work; he graded us to reflect that.
John Wolfe is as one commentator said "amazing". By far one of the best teachers I have had. Really knows his chemistry and is happy to help explain topics. Great Lecturer and one of the main reasons I am going into chemistry. If you ever have the chance to take a class with him do it! Specifically do CHEM 215HH. Again you wont regret it.
After 210 with Nolta I was concerned whether any of the 215 professors could meet her caliber. However Dr. Wolfe is awesome and has so much knowledge about organic chemistry! He is a really nice, funny, and down to earth guy and really wants all of his students to succeed. He explains concepts well and is more than willing to answer any questions.
He's an amazing professor. He's very understanding and responds right away to emails.
Love this guy. Super methodical about how he teaches, which suited my learning style really well. He's also very approachable and kind, and never fails to answer a question in a way that you can understand. Wish he taught more classes!
The material is in no way easy, but Wolfe does a pretty good job of explaining difficult concepts. He is willing to answer any questions you have, even a couple hours before the exam. The exams were fair, and with the coursepack and practice tests, its definitely not impossible to do well.
Great teacher with a dry sense of humor. Taught you most everything you need to know, but be able to apply concepts to new types of problems on exams. Only truly difficult exam was 2, but very high averages on the other 3 exams. Do lots of practice problems. Sometimes skimmed over stuff he tested on but overall a great professor and would recommend
One of the best professors at this University. Genuinely cares about each student. Do the coursepack and be able to adjust to new situations on exams. Pay attention during lectures because he gives all the concepts needed to be successful on exams.
His open office hours were seriously the most helpful thing ever, I went to them every single week. Super good at explaining really hard material and he answers questions really clearly and never beats around the bush
Professor Wolfe was awesome! His lectures were fun to attend. I really enjoyed the HTML project because it was such a creative project but still focused on the chemistry. After taking double honors with Wolfe, I love organic chemistry so much that I joined his lab.
He's an amazing lecturer and makes material so tangible despite it being pretty difficult. Does an exceptional job structuring notes with bullet points, notes, examples etc. Is kind enough to give exam review during lectures leading up to exams.
I attribute all of my success in this class to Professor Wolfe. His lectures were very organized and he explained concepts in a way that was easier to understand. The course material is very challenging but he offers open discussions where he goes over concepts/coursepack questions further. I would definitely recommend taking this class with him.
Dr. Wolfe's an amazing lecturer who presents difficult concepts in an extremely tangible manner. Exams aren't easy, but completely fair. Do all the coursepack before each exam and go to Wolfe's office hours and an A is completely obtainable. Go to GSI office hours too, Ashlee was absolutely incredible. Definitely found orgo 2 easier than orgo 1.
If you have the opportunity to take Chemistry 210 from Dr. Wolfe, do it. He lectures at a faster pace than the other professors, which means he covers more material and shows more examples of exam-type questions. He is truly an expert in the field and communicates his knowledge clearly.
Dr. Wolfe is great. He has a dry sense of humor that keeps lectures from being too boring. Tough class but if you put in work (coursepack, practice exams, textbook problems) you will be fine! I really liked him but he goes fast so pay attention
Wolfe is a solid orgo professor. He's not the best teacher in the world, but he will definitely give you all the information you need before exams. This class requires lots of time outside class with any professor, so put time into coursepack problems and practice exams.
Dr. Wolfe was the best professor I had at the University of Michigan. Only complaint is his handwriting is hard to read at times. Hiss lectures are very helpful for understanding the concepts. He is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. Stay on top of the course pack and take practice exams and you'll do incredible in the course.
This guy is the GOAT. He's funny and chill but also doesn't play games. He covers a lot of material quickly but he's very organized and explains the material in the most logical order. He definitely gets you very prepared for the exams. Definitely recommend.
This man is INCREDIBLE!! Literally one of best professors I have ever had. It sucks that I couldn't have him for Chem 210 or 215 because Wolfe knows how to teach so clearly and his explanations make so much sense. I had him for 216 and 420 and in both courses I felt like I actually learned chemistry and his exams have always been very fair
John Wolfe was a great orgo teacher. Even with online class, he really adopted to the online format and gives a lot of extra problem solving sessions. He explained material clearly and made orgo make sense which is a hard thing to do. He also answered any and all questions thoroughly. If you are going to take orgo, take it with Wolfe.
Amazing Professor
Orgo definitely is a tough course but Wolfe really makes learning the subject fun and the entire class worthwhile. Even with the change to online, Wolfe has been very engaging and accessible through extra problem-solving sessions. Overall, he's a really concise and amazing lecturer, which is really nice.
Prepares you very well for the exams. Lectures and zoom calls covered harder material of each subject, which prepares you better to tackle exam problems. People did have a hard time following Wolfe because he would go directly to hard problems during zoom calls instead of fundamentals (which I enjoyed this approach). Watch the lectures!
Excellent lecturer! Very knowledgeable, efficient, and cares about the education of his students. He technically was not my professor for this class, but I began attending his lectures part-way through the semester and benefited tremendously through them. I think I owe a good deal of my love for O-Chem to Dr. Wolfe!
Out of every class I've taken at UofM so far (including multiple science classes), Professor Wolfe is easily the best professor I have ever had. His online lectures were very clear and concise, and he is readily available outside of class to help. The exams are very difficult, but Prof. Wolfe actually helped me enjoy the content.
Dr. Wolfe was the BEST teacher I have had at UMich. I had him for both chem 210 and chem 215. He taught clearly and concisely, and always brought a great sense of humor to the problem solving sessions. His content vids are prerecorded, but the live sessions are worth coming to. Test heavy, but Dr. Wolfe is a fair grader and listened to feedback.
Absolute beast of a professor. Teaches hard classes, but makes them enjoyable.
Dr. Wolfe is an absolutely INCREDIBLE professor. He managed to make learning organic chemistry online doable and somewhat interesting. He is also extremely caring and wants his students to do well. I cannot say enough good things about him. Take him if you can!!!
Organic chem is a really tough subject, but Dr. Wolfe makes it doable. He is great at answering students' questions and interacting with the class, even when it's with 200 people on a Zoom call. I wish I could have had him during an in-person semester! Highly recommend going to office hours and doing the coursepack problems as often as possible.
Although Organic Chemistry is hard, Professor Wolfe made the class so much easier. His lecture is a flipped style, so you watch the lectures on your own time and then work on practice problems during class. Beware, it is easy to fall behind because homework is not required. The class grade is based on the four exams. A80-100%, B60-80%, C45-60%
Professor Wolfe is by far the best professor I have ever had. Organic chemistry is clearly not the easiest class, but the way he runs it makes it possible. The class is flipped but his pre-recorded lectures are fantastic and the way he works through problems in class prepares you so well for the exams. Take Professor Wolfe if at all possible!!!
Wolfe is a great lecturer. He reccomends (essentially requires) that you watch lecture videos before class, but this means he spends the whole lecture doing problems and clarifying concepts. He also has a great personality and is great at answering student questions. Best prof I've had.
Dr. Wolfe is an excellent professor. His flipped classroom format was very suitable for CHEM210, as he went over many practice problems each class period. The grade in this class is exclusively determined by four exams, so being on top of the (challenging) material at all times is essential. This class is 5/5 hard, but Dr. Wolfe is a 5/5 professor.
He has no care for students
If you have the chance, take Wolfe for 210. His topic videos are EXTREMELY helpful, even if you can't make the in-person lectures, these videos will help make orgo more manageable. It's a hard class and he goes fast, but Wolfe will provide you with the necessary content in a straightforward way, which not every 210 professor does.
Dr. Wolfe is an amazing Chemistry 210 professor. Organic Chemistry in general is hard, but he is always willing to further explain concepts and his insight is extremely helpful. I also found his flipped lecture style to be very helpful and he guides you through many practice problems after a new concept. Take this class with Wolfe if you can!
A bit condescending at times
the best professor out there. Explained concepts so clearly.
Wolfe is definitely the best orgo professor here, and I would recommend him over any of the other professors. He explains the topics in a way that is much clearer than any of the other professors.
Dr. Wolfe is very knowledgeable in his field. He explains material concisely and clearly. I had him for both Chem 211 and 216, and I appreciated the way he walked through the experiments in a way that helped me complete the notebook pages. 211 is more relaxed about notebook pages, but you should read the notebook page instructions closely for 216.
Wolfe has single-handedly redeemed the chem department for me. His lectures are concise, paced perfectly, and when he's done he lets you go early, which I really appreciate. Sometimes they are only 20 mins. He is insanely knowledgeable about orgo while remaining super approachable. The GSI's were also great for this course (shoutout Kate Berges!)
Wolfe's lectures are concise and paced perfectly. The material is explained clearly, and he's incredibly knowledgeable. Unstuck AI was a huge help for study prep.
WN 24 org II lab. Extremely fast-paced lecture, so you really have to review the slides later to understand everything. Lab was unfortunately monotonous week-to-week and lasted almost the entire 3 hours. Though I really think that the experience depends on the GSI. You do learn how to analyze an IR and NMR well, a useful skill. Enjoyed 211 lab more
I had him for Chem 130. He seems like a nice guy and tries his best, but I had a really hard time following along in his lectures and ended up attending Dr. Bartley's lectures instead, since it worked out for my schedule. He teaches solely based on slides and the chalkboard. I started doing better on exams once I switched to Bartley's lecture.
Wolfe is genuinely such a good professor! I did terrible on the first exam and started watching his lectures for the 2nd and 3rd exam and brought my grade up to an A-. HE IS THE GOAT!!! Unfortunately, he didn't write the final...
Great professor. Course grade is heavily based on exams but Wolfe is very polite and always willing to help/provide feedback. This course has leveled up in difficulty from the past few years so you have to put the work in but Wolfe prepares you very well for the midterms. The final was diabolical.
Wolfe is fine. Fast boring lectures, but that can be expected. The real issue is with the class. The exams were truly nothing like the practice exams or any of the review done in class. They were writing questions that were maybeee referenced once in a random lecture. Wolfe at least uses slides in his lectures. Study a lot for the midterms.
Pretty chill professor. He answers questions during lectures and office hours. Attendance not required. He's pretty down-to-earth. He'll help you understand a lot of concepts well through slides and his docu-cam. Shame he didn't write the final though. Overall, I'd call him the goat, but his name would make you say he's more of a Wolfe.
Chem130 can be a pretty hard course and you can't escape that because all of the chem students are taking the same exams, regardless of your professor. However, I highly recommend taking chem with Wolfe. He uses slideshows for his notes which is nice and always includes a lotttt of example problems where he thoroughly explains everything.
Solid lectures, but really bland and often hard to comprehend, as in he doesn't give the best explanations/examples. Got me through the course, but more or less just a filler class.
I thought his lectures were fun and concise. While the final was difficult, every topic had at one point been discussed in lecture (some of which I missed, and deservingly lost points on the final). His examples and walkthroughs in class are very helpful, if you want to succeed in this class you must attend lecture
Wolfe's lectures were comprehensive and easy to understand. He used slide decks and the chalkboard, which made it easy to catch up if I missed a lecture. He moved fast through lectures, but still slow enough to be able to understand him. Midterms are pretty okay, final was brutal.
When you go to lecture, he goes through stuff pretty quickly but he covers what you need to know. He's a nice guy and good teacher. The course material isn't so difficult. They try to make the tests harder, but if you go to Michigan, you are smart and will be fine.
He is a very nice and well prepared professor. Lectures move very fast so be prepared. Very helpful to visit him in office hours, he cares about helping his students.
