Tough class, I agree, but definitely, most definitely WORTH IT! You think he's a jerk? Think again! He's awesome! If you just go to him for assistance.

He is very knowledgable about his field and is very clear about how difficult it is to be a writer in our contemporary society. John teaches in a relaxed atmosphere and challenges us to connect with our creative selves through writing exercises. I took WR241 and WR244 with him. If possible, I would take another class with him.

Whomever thinks he is a jerk is OVERLY sensitive,his wrk cn b very difficult & time consuming,however if u r ever stuck w/ ur paper he is willn to help n if u listen he practically throws ansers at u, his teaching style doesnt make u drag to go to writing

Zackel is an awesome teacher. He does have a lot of work that must be done but doesn't grade too harshly. He genuinely wants everyone to pass his class. I would recommend him to anyone.

John was an incredibly advantageous, inspiring, encouraging, hilarious instructor that was just fun to be around--over all. I enjoyed every minute of his class and would love being in another with him. I completely recommend him to anyone who wants a great college experience!!

Totally easy class. Johns cool but a little fake if you think you are special in any way or a really great writer he probably likes your stuff but at the end of the day someone who sucked will get the same grade as you. Kind of a joke.

What a great instructor...interesting, great sense of humor, interesting ideas, encourages creativity.

Excellent instructor. He came to class everyday with an incredible sense of humor. He knows his stuff. One of my favorite teachers of all time. His sense of humor is dark, but still, being in his class was a privilege this term.

John Zackel is the man! What else can I say? Here's a man who is sincerely dedicated to his students and the art of writing. His classes are probably the most entertaining I've ever taken, due to the engaging coursework and his dark sense of humor. Effort is required, he doesn't appreciate freeloaders in his class, and neither do the other students

Excellent teacher! The only class at PCC I looked forward to going to. Laid back atmosphere in class, but you need to have read the material because you will be expected to participate in class discussions (It's part of the grade).

Zackel is a great teacher and his classes are easy if you're prepared. As long as you do your best in his class you will probably get an A, but for those who truly desire to learn more about writing, Zackel's classes are a must and invaluable. And you will laugh in every single class.

He seemed like a very well educated individual. I really think anyone could have fun in any of his classes but still get something out of it.

He defiantly likes the sound of his own voice. Will grade you at high standard as a student. However he rarely acts like a teacher. He swears and does not grade work quickly, if at all, leaving you to wonder about your grade. Funny, but not professional.

Very hElpful but hard papers

For sure learned a lot in his 241 class! I've always like writing but this class challenged me in a good way and I think I'm a better writer because of it. He is a little slow on getting homework back but has great feedback written on it when it gets back to you. For sure recommend his class to anybody wants to be challenged but also have fun!

I've had the pleasure of taking classes by some truly exceptional teachers and Zackel ranked right up there. I wouldn't say his class is easy, but it's worth the extra effort. Your brain will hurt, and you'll love it. Whatever else was going on I always looked forward to coming to this class and was terribly sad to see it end!

One of the best teachers I've had so far. Keeps class entertaining and challenges you to really think about your statements - backing them up with examples. Expect to read weekly, and come prepared. Debate is expected. One heck of a fun class!

Take his class! Not a huge fan of writing, but Zackel made the papers/class fun and interesting. Gave really good feedback. Textbook too expensive.

Great teacher! Class is a lot of fun, assignments are hard but he allows you to edit and re-turn in. He is very good about meeting outside of class to talk about grades and papers.

Zackel is by far my favorite instructor at PCC. He's a little on the crazy side, but he is really passionate about writing. I honestly felt like buying the text book was a waste of money seeing as I only used it once,but overall he is a really good instructor.

Great teacher! Take his class, he's usualy pretty upbeat and gets the class involved. Thought the text book was too expensive for how often it was used, which was once in class.

John is a hard grader but you will get a lot out of taking his class.

This man is the best writing teacher I've had thus far. He's clear about assignments, guides you through papers, and honestly wants you to pass. He curses a lot, and claims to not care about his students or their opinions. It isn't true though. He's a Teddy bear! Plus, he's easy on the eyes. An intelligent guy who knows what he's talking about.

I took his mythology class and I loved it! He does curse a lot and he's really funny. Plus he's totally gorgeous (like a little pixie man). I loved this class.

if you can take a class from Zackel DO IT!

I looked forward to going to class every day, such a good instructor! Class was thought provoking, so interesting, and had lots of dialogue and exchange of thoughts, and it's because of the way he conducts his class. I wasn't crazy about this classes novel, but I still loved the class and it wasn't too hard. Take him! he's smart, funny, and cute.

Excellent teacher--he was entertaining, laid back, and encouraging. He makes it very clear what is expected from your work, and he's frequently available to give feedback/suggestions on unfinished work. He includes no personal biases when reviewing/discussing arguments; however, he does swear occasionally. I would recommend him to almost anyone.

Zackel is adorable, personality and physically. His classes will challenge you, in a good way. If you work hard and pay attention you should have no problem getting an A. He is fun, energetic, and gets the class invloved. I would highly recommend this or any of his other classes. And even if you aren't interested he is easy to look at for 2 hours:)

No matter which class you take from Mr. Zackel, you can count on thinking outside yourself, and walking away with a strong sense of accomplishment. The grade you earn is what you put into any of his classes. He is fair, nonjudgmental, answers questions, available for help when needed, and involves each student in a comfortable way. Highly recommend

Zackel is a great teacher and keeps the classes interesting. He curses a lot, but gets a little embarrassed when talking about sex which is funny. If you go to class, take notes, and do the reading you should have no problem passing his class.

Great guy, loves to laugh, was missing for a few weeks of class but made up for it on the end. I would recommend to anyone, especially liberals.

This is my second class with Zackel and I'm still loving it. If you come to class prepared you are going to have a good time. He has a sense of humor and isn't afraid to be more personal than strict. Plus, his discussions let you really explore topics, even if they might be a touch uncomfortable. Great teacher all around.

I absolutely love this teacher! The way we went over notes for the tests was very helpful, and as long as you do the readings and pay attention to the presentations you'll do great. Unlike a lot of teachers, he understands that life happens and sometimes you can't get to class. I highly recommend this teacher!

Zackel is awesome. I loved this creative writing class. He gave us good advice and skills, he answered a lot of questions, and always gave positive feed back.

What can I say? The man can teach. And he does it well. All around funny guy, but still is able to control his class as well as instill some super thoughtful advice that helped our class improve our skills. He however is super serious about the workload, so don't expect an easy ride. You have to work for your grade in this class.

Zackel is able to both teach and entertain at the same time. Hilarious sense of humor. He is my all-time favorite instructor. Provides feedback if you ask for it. Also, there's no textbook required. I'd recommend signing up for any of his classes.

This class is an absolute blast. You get to read a lot of different stories from lesser known mythologies; Ancient Greek/Roman myths aren't covered. Definitely worth taking.

Amazing teacher. It's very apparent he's passionate about writing. Zackel is even willing to talk to you outside of class about your work. Class workshops are both productive and fun. Your stories will be read by the entire class; but it's made clear only constructive criticism is welcome. You will want to attend every class.

Zackel really helps you become a better writer.I took this class for fun, but ended up learning a lot. I was proud of my work by the end of term.

He's super funny and makes you feel comfortable in class with speaking your opinion. He's vague on topics but it gives you the freedom to write about what you want and do the best on it. He's not judge mental so you can write about pretty much anything as long as you make it worth the time to read. He'll always compliment and improve your writing!

Amazing teacher. Doesn't require a textbook, which is awesome. He is one of my favorite teachers I've ever had and I'm taking Writing 122 with him next term!:) Take all of the classes you can with him! Fantastic.

Zackel is very funny and very laid-back with his students. Intro to Folklore and Mythology is one of the most fun classes I've taken and he makes it so great. Plus, he's not bad on the eyes either.

John is a very good teacher. I highly recommend him to everyone. His class is always engaging which seems to make it go fast. He never rushes when you meet with him. The assignments he gives are current and never boring. Take the class, you will not regret it at all.

The class was so much fun. I am really sad that it is over. I will definitely recommend Zackel to other students. He was funny, engaging, and passionate about Folklore and Mythology. He was very knowledgable and made learning exciting. He is also very attractive which is a nice bonus.

This class is so much fun, even though the workload is high everything you work on is enjoyable. Zackel creates an environment that makes you feel comfortable sharing anything with the class. I would recommend taking any class you can with him.

There's a lot of reading required to participate, and participation is important for a good grade. John has an issue with returning emails but he enjoys it when you see him face-to-face. He's sarcastic but in a funny way and his opinions are really valuable when it comes to your writing; he knows what he's talking about. Highly recommended.

Zackel is a great teacher. He knows how to have fun in a class, but still teach you lots about folklore you never heard of. The class is pretty easy and long, but the time flies when you're having geeky debates about Star Wars and Batman. Take this class if you can! No textbook, all reading are online.

Super laid back and chill teacher. Only 1 essay paper (5000 words) that you work on through out the term. The discussions are interesting and the workload is not overwhelming. He cares for his students and is very funny. Only problem is that the gradebook isn't working! So you have to email him for a grade. What a awesome teacher, would take again!

John had this amazing ability to effectively transfer information while being simultaneously hilarious, especially about some of the drier parts of his class. He was often very clear in his lectures and notes, gave us regular breaks, and was overall very fair in a lot of his assessments and discussions. He's a great teacher in a great class. 10/10

I knew nothing about Folklore or Mythology prior to taking this course, and it was pretty obvious from the very beginning that most of the other students had a good foundation of knowledge regarding the topic. I was initially terrified, but John's lectures were so easy to follow and interesting. This ended up being one of my favorite classes.

One of the few teachers I've had that made class interesting and fun. If you have a chance to take a class with John, you totally should!

Zackel is just a really cool, laid-back guy. He has a lot of great writing exercises, and I really enjoyed his class. The second half of this class is a writing workshop with your classmates, so participation is really important but also helps you learn to be a critical reader. Feedback could have been better, but overall great class!

He is my favorite teacher of all time. Extremely funny, he made me look forward to going to class. He swears and he is extremely sarcastic and it's amazing. There's a presentation, two tests, and a final paper. I wish I could take him again.

Zackel was a fantastic teacher. As someone who gets a ton out of well laid out lectures with all the notes written neatly and comprehensibly on the board I had a great time. He's also hilarious and easy to talk to.

Johnny is an amazing instructor. I've recommended him to students at other campuses because of his teaching style. He's realistic & respects his students. He only assigns one large essay in his class rather than multiple essays throughout the term. He also recognizes high costs for textbooks so he keeps that low. Take him--he's worth it (& cute).

Zackel was a great teacher. He only does one essay (that you work on throughout the term) and a few smaller assignments. The discussions are interesting and the class was fun overall.

Zackel is a very respected teacher and is dedicated to making sure students understand what is expected from them. He makes the class lively and his sense of humor makes the class enjoyable. Showing up to class is mandatory; after missing three classes your grade starts to drop. Additionally, lecture notes make up a large part of the exams.

He knows how to keep the class interesting

Johnny is super fun to listen to and assigns enjoyable homework. Mythology class was laid-back with lots of crazy class discussions. He's very caring and understanding of any issues with learning disabilities or mental illness or the like and is wholly willing to work with you. He likes to seem crass on the surface but he's a sweetheart.

I took Johnny for Fiction Creative Writing. The class is VERY reading heavy but the majority of the reading is easy and interesting so it wasn't very difficult. Johnny is hilarious and makes the class really engaging. I was never bored and looked forward to class every week, but I also learned a lot.

Johnny is a great guy! Very funny and flexible. His lectures are hilarious, helpful and very laid back. He always explains the assignments in great detail and gives tons of time to work on them. Only 3 papers in a regular term, so make them count!

Johnny is a fantastic teacher, definitely one of the best for ENG at PCC. He gives a lot of lectures, but they're always entertaining. There are a few projects throughout (some group), but the directions are clear. Only two big tests the whole term. I highly recommend taking a class with him.

Zackel was one of my top three professors here at PCC, and I have taken 90+ credits through this college. So when I tell you that he is going to make you enjoy reading a story about a guy that gets tied to the ceiling with intestines at 12am, you end up oddly curious to learn more. This is one adventure with this excellent instructor.

Hilarious, charismatic. interesting lectures. I learned a lot and laughed a bit every class. He is passionate and wants you to be as well. lots of reading, but they are fun. No books, everything is d2l. 2 tests & 2 projects. Tests are actually funny/enjoyable?! I will take him again. And if you can, you should too. It will be life changing.

Very affable and obviously loves his job. His time management could be a little better but we were given ample information for our tests and homework assignments and he really cares about his students.

I took Johnny's Folklore and Mythology class, and he is the best. His lectures are consistently hilarious, so it's easy to absorb the material. There were two exams and one final project. The exams did take some studying, but weren't that bad. There was no textbook. Also, he's very attractive, so that's a plus.

He's one of the best professors I've had at PCC. If you value the relationship you have with your professor, then he's your guy. He's hilarious, relatable, and cares.

One of the funnest classes I've ever taken. There's so much to read and remember, but Zackel has a unique way of abridging everything in a hilarious manner. If you need to take an English class take this one.

Johnny is an amazing teacher. He makes the lectures hilarious and easy to follow & gives interesting readings. The class-atmosphere is chill and you'll do well as long as you read and go to class (you'll want to go). Prepare to become a nerd. Cool.

Johnny's class was favorite this term and he is the best professor I've had in college. He's really funny and knowledgeable and the class itself was both fun and educational. Would definitely take one of his classes again.

Honestly he's hilarious and he made me want to come to class everyday because his class was so enjoyable to be in. He gives clear grading criteria and the option for extra credit. Makes the class engaging and welcoming to be in. My favorite class at PCC to date.

I took Johnny for Folklore and Mythology, and I liked his teaching so much I quit my job so I could fit his Creative Writing class into my schedule. That should tell you all you need to know. Take a class of his at least once.

I have never taken a more fun and interesting class than this. You learn so much but Johnny has a way of making everything memorable. Really gonna miss this class.

Johnny Zackel is my favorite writing teacher! I've taken many writing classes, but he makes it fun and he is very helpful and hilarious!

His teaching style combines many different styles of teaching that helps the student learn. Not only that, but he infuses into the class a wonderful enthusiasm that most professors lack. He makes you generally excited for class and learning.

He was such an amazing teacher! Very friendly and funny. I learned so much from this class and I can honestly attribute most of that to how awesome his teaching was. If you are interested in creative writing, or even just have some space to fill in your schedule, take his class.

I loved this class. You do two writing pieces that are then discussed by the class in a very compassionate and sometimes humorous atmosphere that Johnny directs. You then get written feedback from everyone on your story. There will be extra printing costs, and if you're shy, you probably will have from the anxiety of having EVERYONE read your story

Staying on top of your readings definitely help you, so do it! Overall john is such a great guy; he makes every lecture funny and enjoyable, and I'm honestly gonna miss taking a class for once. There's 1 prez and papers due for the term but they're very doable. I really appreciate him making the class do study questions/review for the exams too

Zackel is amazing. His lectures keep you involved and are by far the best Ive ever sat through. He lets you have a notecard on the final and midterm, so theres no way you wont pass.

This class was very engaging. He makes you want to be there; which I highly recommend as when I missed one class, some of the information given was irretrievable and on the exam. Luckily I was able to get a basic idea through someone elses notes. He is very insightful and funny.

Have to write a couple stories and do a lot of reading your peers stories, but if you keep up with it and don't skip class you'll be just fine.

Although there is a lot of reading with various myths and stories, Johnny's lectures are fantastic. He really cares about what he's teaching, and connects with students through his lectures, and is funny as hell.

2 stories are the main assignments. Workshop is the main core of the class so it does req. a relative amount of reading classmates' stories and giving written feedback, so it still makes you work for the participation points! But if you don't mind reading amazing stories, it's well worth it and I have learned a lot to improve my own fiction writing

WOW! My favorite professor! He was clear and organized as a teacher AND hilarious as a person. He gave the class so much creative freedom and he created an amazing classroom environment. Additionally, he had no problem calling out someone who was acting annoying or rude in class. Truly an icon. Please take a class of his if you get a chance!

Johnny is the best, most chill professor in the world. There is a lot of reading, but duh, it's an English class. You have one presentation (you can do another for extracredit.), two exams that are easy if you actually read the material, and one final project (either art or essay). Most interesting lectures ever, take this class. Seriously.

I'm so glad I took myth with Johnny because this was probably my favorite class I've ever taken. Johnny's lectures were super engaging and hilarious. There's a fair amount of reading and an essay for the final project, but I found the workload to be pretty easy to manage. Great class, highly recommend!!

This man is a real gem. You can tell by his lectures that he has a passion for this class and the subject. I highly recommend this class as it looks upon many cultures, history, and comes with one of the best teachers Ive ever had the pleasure of having.

I've had professor Zackle in two classes, and the most recent being English 250 - World Mythology. I've learned from professor Zackle that people's mythologies, religions, and cultures, are important. Even though I may not know much about them initially, I've learned the importance of researching to get to know others better.

Johnny is one of my favorite professors of all time! I took the folklore and mythology class with him and it was so much, everyday I looked forward to being in this class. Very clear hes passionate about it and the lectures are so much fun and interesting. He has fun projects and activities in class, and the tests are pretty easy. 100% recommend!

IF you are an ECHS student listen up, Johnny Zackel and his class will probably reach your ear sometime during your stay at PCC, and for good reason. A down to earth and hilarious man paired with a subject that will feed your imagination is a combo I doubt anyone will regret having. Trying to get some credits or you are just interested,please do it

Johnny was a wonderful professor who worked very hard to give us back our midterms literally 2 days after we did them. He's hilarious and can be stern if need be, but he was such a wonderful professor. I am so happy to have taken his class. I advise any student who goes into his English 250 class (Mythology) to be a good student and he'llbegoodback

Johnny is entertaining, and clearly loves writing and his job. He prioritizes group discussion when we workshop other student's stories, and ensures respect and constructive criticism. The class isn't that hard, but you have to read about 30 stories during the term. Worth the reading and you learn a lot.

This was my favorite class of the year. Johnny makes a fun classroom experience and the subject is really interesting so you pretty much forget that you're actually taking a college class.

Johnny makes the class super fun. You're only graded on the midterm, final, and final myth project. You can use a notecard for the midterm and final. If you miss class, you just need to get the class notes from someone else. He's great and I definitely recommend.

One of a kind. So cool- lots of class wide conversations on all sorts of topics modern and not. The reading isnt intensive but theres a fair amount of it. Take notes (or get them from someone) and read and youll get an A or even higher. Really cool guy. (but beware, the class attracts weirdos)

Johnny is so great. He genuinely cares about the success of his students and spells out what his expectations are. He usually lets class out a little early. He is very smart and knows what he is doing and expects participation, but also understands that not everyone is perfect. If you're looking for an amazing writing instructor Johnny is your guy.

The amount of reading is the only bad part of the class but, it makes sense considering the course material. The class is incredibly interesting and fun. The professor is cool too. I would recommend this professor.

I've taken this professor's classes twice and I would again. If you want a fun creative writing class with cool activities and a hilarious teacher, this class is for you. He is very nice and gives relevant feedback. Not too hard class. Just the best professor you could ask for. Seriously, if you're considering him, go for it! You won't regret it.

This was a very fun and interesting class. I highly recommend taking this if you are looking for something easy and fun. There is some reading, though not much and it's really interesting. Weekly discussion post and two multiple choice/very short answer exams, open note and really easy if you've watched the videos and read everything assigned.

Funny and down-to-earth professor, I loved his class! Material and work was easy and enjoyable, nothing too time consuming besides reading mythology/folklore stories, but that is the point of the class (it's not too much). Work load is not heavy and you get to learn and read about myth/folk. One midterm and final, medium difficulty ?'s, no quizzes.

Finally, a genuinely cool teacher without it feeling forced or out of place. It's a super easy course, and John said it himself during the first lecture. Minimal work, and easy-to-follow lectures with note outlines. He opens up discussion to everyone, and creates a relaxed and comfortable environment. Open note exams are also a plus.

One of the best teachers I've ever had to pleasure being taught by. He has made a lasting impression in how my brain and creativity works, helping me so many ways inside and outside the classroom. Like everyone else if you can take a class with him as the teacher, TAKE IT!

I absolutely love Johnnys class! He is a hilarious professor which makes lectures really fun and I found myself looking forward to them. He does a great job with guiding your notes and prepping for exams. Amazing group discussions and was really understanding with everything. I would 100% take a class from him again

Very fun class, with lots of reading though. He's super good at getting all sides of the discussion, even if he doesn't agree with said things, which I appreciate. There's a lot of participation required because it's mostly a talking class with lots of discussions, and honestly that helps cement everything into your brain.

Professor Zackel's ENG250 class is a fun and engaging experience. The material is interesting, and he does a great job facilitating discussions. For study prep, I found unstuck study and the free course textbook to be super helpful alongside the lectures.

John was an absolute gem of a professor, and I really lucked out! The course material is interesting, and you have a whole class of group study before each exam; there are two, and he brings treats! Overall, a very chill and fun class with the right group of students!
