He was fun and interesting to hear. Liked to have class discussions and strived to get students to interact and argue. Made for a fun class.
Very easy class, fun and interesting.
Great guy, intersting, fun, and easy to listen to. Honestly one of the best professors I have had
The class was kind of confusing and he can be hard to understand at times. I bombed the first test but after that I knew how his tests were and what to study. After that i got a 95+ on all of the tests and an A in the class.
He does not like if you stand up to him. He dislikes very much if you have to miss class. Not understandable at all if you must make up a test due to something you cannot miss, for example an IPFW athletic competition. Athletes are treated unfairly in his class. Read over notes carefully for test.
Attendance is very important in his class, but he allow few free pass that doesn't counts toward your grade. After that, even you are just late for class it will be on the record. His exam is very fair. And textbook reading and in class notes are the important tools to get A in his course.
Tests are very hard but passable if answer the esseys in detail as the directions say. He has a thick accent but you get used to it after a while. Powerpoints were taken word for word out of the textbook so they were long and rather boring at times. However he explains things very well if you ask him.
I took this class online. The majority of the work is answering questions based on reading. I found the tests fairly difficult. He grades essays very strictly, so answers that he praised on the homework were insufficient for the tests. You definitely have to earn your grade, but overall it was a good experience.
If you get a compliment on one of the many essays you completed on the homeworks and then try to use that for the essay on the test he WILL NOT accept that. He will want more detail etc...just be wary that he is a harsh grader. Also i forgot something was due and went to turn it in an hour later and he wouldn't let me...not helpful at all with que
His classes aren't to be taken lightly. If your not use to being extremely detailed in essays then there could be problems. He's very passionate about his subject and makes a boring and confusing subject exciting and his personality makes for a memorable class...overall he's a great prof.
He can be intimidating because he is so knowledgeable on the subject. His tests are to be taken seriously. Studying is necessary, but he gives study guides for each test that are very helpful. Powerpoints are taken almost directly from text. He is very personable and hilarious. Overall, I would take another one of his classes.
I took an internet class. His directions were clear and he responded to every email to answer questions. It was a lot of writing, but if you did the assignments they were a great study guide for the test. He gave 2 exams, 4 fairly big writing assignments and 5 discussions.
Excellent professor, great class
Great man!
Totally amazing and caring
Really great professor, great class and very caring.
I took this online. He's a ridiculous grader. Like he'll take off points for you using pronouns instead of repeating the question and write really condescending paragraphs in response to you. If you're used to taking upper level classes in high school and aren't a college freshman, it's infuriating. He doesn't communicate clearly in writing at all.
I took this class online. He is extremely difficult to understand because he has a thick accent, so you have to teach yourself by reading the textbook and lecture powerpoint slides. His grading is pretty harsh, and he takes off points without clearly explaining what you did wrong. One of my least favorite classes, and I would not recommend it.
Altogether excellent and very caring professor. He is my favorite.
Great professor
I like the professor. He is very caring and helpful and made sure everyone understood the topic before moving on to another. He is very highly recommended. I will take more classes with him.
This professor does not care to assist you if you're doing your best and would like to know your mistakes. He will tell you to go to the IT department and when they also can not help he doesn't care.
Wow! Excellent professor - caring, helpful and friendly. Decker is very smart and intelligent.
This is my final year at IPFW and by far Dr. Decker is my favorite. He Is an interesting, friendly, warm and respectful. Decker is very intelligent and smart, and can be intimidating. He freely uses ancient languages in his teaching. He is first I have met that writes and reads Greek and Hebrew.
Took two classes with professor - one online (PHIL 11100) and this one face-to-face. He is the best. I look forward to take more classes with him.
Took two classes with professor - one online (PHIL 11100) and this one face-to-face. He is the best. I look forward to take more classes with him. Very highly recommended.
Very funny teacher. Just reads off Power Point. Tough material though
Really very honest and smart professor who makes hard work fun. I took this course and Intro to Phil with. Every time he would knowledge after knowledge. His exams are hard but if you prepare you will pass. He provides excellent study guides. You sure earn your grade in his classes.
He is the greatest. Nothing bad to say. Highly recommended.
Fun and exciting class. I learned a lot.
Will take more classes with Prof. He is a terrific man and teacher.
Altogether great class.
He grades easily on class discussions and modules. There isn't a ton of work to do. Tests are hard but there's only two of them.
Provides excellent feedback and is very fair. Prof. Decker is one amazing, caring and loving person.
Made ethics easy to understand, caring professor.
Prof. Decker genuinely cares about education and his students. If you have any interest in learning about religion, enroll in one of his courses. His knowledge of religion is incredibly vast and if you fail to learn anything from him, you were sleeping, something impossible to do in his classes : )
Mr. Decker is a great professor. His lectures are very organized and he makes it easy to learn the information. He give study guides which is basically the test. I would definitely recommend him as a professor.
Totally awesome Prof. Will take more classes with him. Very highly recommended.
Great professor. Real fun, amazing and thoroughly cares for his students. His examinations are not easy though. I wish other Professors were like him. I will miss him and our class. The best I have ever had.
Personally, I don't have much interest in this subject but the book that goes along with this course is pretty interesting. His PPTs are pretty lengthy, however they are super helpful on assignments and exams. You can tell the professor is passionate about this subject and is willing to further explain.
Very highly organized. Content was easy to navigate. Very involving, challenging and hard work but meaningful. The professor is both knowledgeable and helpful, and provides prompt responses to e-mail. Highly recommended.
My favorite professor of all here at IPFW. I have two classes with-one online and now face-to-face. Very caring, kind and cool prof and very fair, honest and respectful. I love his humor and warmth.
A great man to know, associate with and learn from. He has a big golden heart. A totally excellent Professor. Loved his humor and caring spirit.
I am currently taking two classes Dr. Decker. He is the best professor I have ever had. You can actually have fun in his classes and learn. He is very caring, honest and respectful. I am glad my friend recommended him.
Hands down Decker is the best professor I have ever had and I believe he is a gift to IPFW. Until I took his classes, I did not think very much of my professors. His classes are very interesting and highly informative. I looked forward to attending classes and learned so much from him. He is excellent and very caring.
I am taking summer classes with Professor Decker. He is the best professor I have ever had. He knows how to make hard work fun. He is very wise, intelligent, knows and communicate the material very well. Above all, he respects and cares about us his students. He totally rocks.
Really great professor. Knows how to perfectly balance seriousness with humor. His is a class you hate to miss.
Great teacher! He is super funny; however, he can be a little hard to understand. But seriously one of a kind, genuine, unique, and funny. Truly an excellent professor.
A truly superb Professor. Every student must take a class with him. Dr. Decker is very caring and honest; altogether one of a kind. I wish all my other professors were like. I will miss having him.
Wonderful professor. I had taken him for three classes. He is funny and makes the topics he is presenting very clear! He is definitely passionate about the subjects he teaches! Would recommend him!
I took Professor Decker's classes two years ago. I am now in my final year. Looking back now I am glad I took those classes with Decker. He is an amazing, caring and respectful professor. Those were the best experiences I have ever had so far. If I could, I would take any class with him. He is a fine and upright man but very funny.
I took this class as an elective because I had no other classes available to fulfill my general education courses. I had no interest in religion & culture whatsoever until I had Professor Decker. He is absolutely one of the greatest professors I've had! He is funny and makes each lecture so interactive and lively. He never fails to amaze me!
A really nice and highly knowledgeable professor. Very fair and caring.
Great professor that make the class fun and entertaining.
He was very passionate about the subject and cared about each student individually. I would take him in class again in a heartbeat. Just stay up on work and participate and theres no way you will fail.
Decker is the funniest professor at Fort Wayne. Once he gets to know you, he will pick on you all the time which is good because that means he actually likes you. Tests are common sense.
A great professor. Very caring, knowledgeable and respectful. He makes class interesting and requires class participation. He is the best I have had.
This guy is a gift to ipfw. Very wise and knowledgeable but very funny and humble. He drops wisdom after wisdom during lectures, and sometimes advises us like we are his children. He is very caring. I truly appreciate him. He is the best.
Online class was terrible. He gave terrible feedback and was extremely rude in his feedback. Kept repeating "adapt from the textbook" and didn't explain much else. Turned in one assignment, got an 80%, the next 100, and then the next 60% all for the same general amount of work and "adapting". Can't watch his lectures because of the heavy accent.
I just totally love and respect this professor. He is a very caring and good man and an excellent professor.
Knowledgeable, fair, caring but very funny. Decker is amazing and very passionate in his delivery. He is my favorite. Highly recommended!
Don't see how anyone can say anything bad about this Prof., Decker. Here is a man who is very fair, respectful, down to earth and caring. He does his best to involve everyone in class discussions and does not play favorites. I love his sense of humor and how lively he makes the class.
By far the most inconsiderate, rude, condescending, unclear professor I have ever had. Avoid having to interact with this man at all costs. He ruined the entire field of philosophy for me.
Superb Prof. Encourages students to learn and is very fair and respectful. Highly recommended. Makes class lively and there is never a dull moment with him.
Decker, rocks! My all time favorite professor. His classes are interesting, inspirational and highly informative. The exams are challenging.
I thought Professor Decker was very funny and a very good instructor. He always knew what he was talking about and was always very kind. The instructor is very excellent at teaching the material, he makes sure that everyone understands the material. The instructor makes the class fun and upbeat. The instructor is outstanding.
This professor is the real stud. I came to his class a graduate student trying to a clear an undergraduate deficiency; and boy was I in something very special and challenging. The guy is not only but very inspirational and heavy intellectual ideas every time. I looked forward to attending his classes even though they were late in the afternoon.
Decker is probably one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He is engaging, helpful, extremely knowledgeable, and you can tell he loves to teach. He was an extremely good teacher. if we didn't understand something he would take time to make sure we did. Also, his setup on Blackboard was the best I have ever seen: clear, helpful, and colored.
He knows what he talking about in Phil, he's very informative about using blackboard and willing to explain. However, I noticed he likes making jokes about women in class, and sure people laugh, but It just feels very uncomfortable
Great Professor. I looked forward to attending classes. He is just absolutely very good, respectful and caring.
Amazing Professor; witty, funny, respectful and intelligent. Hope all of my other professors were like him.
A truly superb Professor. He makes learning fun and does whatever lies in his power to help students succeed. I wish all of my other professors were like him. In his class, everybody is somebody,
Decker, rocks! I will take him any time. I wish he was teaching all my other classes
If you're not a philosophy major and do not care at all about philosophy, do not take this class, I was a biology major and I did more work for this class than both my BIOL 203 and BIOL 204 class.
I took this class in summer. Initially I thought I was going to fail the class. My email exchanges however with Decker changed everything. He responds to all emails promptly and would patiently explain any area in the course work I was struggling with. He is excellent. My dislike and distaste for him changed into appreciation quickly.
Taking this class with Decker was the highlight of my academic career at PFW. He is an awesome professor. Very friendly, warm, respectful, fair, balanced and very accommodating. Even though he is an ordained Christian minister he never allowed his believes and biases to figure in class discussions. Sometimes I wondered if he believed anything.
Worst professor ever! Repeated the same stuff every class, didnt review well for the class! Didnt work with students.
He takes attendance daily and your grade will be deducted after missing more than 2 classes. The textbook is required and you will read it but you can pass without it and there is no homework directly from it. He will require participation during class (for a grade) and his tests are hard but he offers extra credit to make up for how hard they are.
Rude and condescending, especially to women!
By far the most boring class I have ever taken. All he does is lecture all class and gets off topic very easily. If you are not required to take this class, don't. It will mess up your GPA. He grades you on attendance. Like, no.
Very uncaring and condescending to women
Was not available during the semester and never responds to emails. Very condescending
Bad communicator. Bad Lectures. Do not waste your money
Did not treat women correctly and ruined the philosophical field for many. Very inconsiderate
Dr Decker is Great! As you will quickly find out, he "has an accent" but you get used to it and his lectures quickly become entertaining and engaging. Attendance and participation is graded so be sure to show up. The class can be passed without textbooks but some test material comes out of the textbook only, not his lectures. Great course overall!
Possibly the worst professor I have ever had. He blabs about nothing all of class and hardly ever goes over the material that is covered on exams. If you take his Religion and Culture course, do not expect to learn ANYTHING interesting about religion or culture. Only grades in the gradebook are exams and attendance. Terrible professor
Absolutely the greatest professor I had at PFW.
Decker is just totally awesome.
Really very caring professor, honest and down to earth.
Decker is a great guy--he not only was a great professor, but supported me through my degree and into graduate school with encouragement and letters of rec. While his essays can be difficult, he wants to teach you to be organized and follow directions. Values hard work and communication, and he has a great sense of humor.
You often hear about professors who will change your life and how you live it. That is exactly who Johnathan Decker is. He takes the most complex subjects and makes them fun and exciting. Very few people can make you laugh and learn as well as he does. He is truly one of a kind and I could not recommend him enough.
I've only had him for one week now, and I can already tell you he is horrible. All of the reviews about him being condescending are accurate. One simple email exchange and he was extremely rude and unprofessional. I am willing to bet this class will be mildly difficult because of him wanting everything to be super particular. Take Witucki for this.
Easiest class of my life. I love his personality!
