Jonathan is pretty cool at first the class seemed sketch but just don't worry about the key words!! That was my mistake on the first test. Study the lecture notes and you should do fine. Quizzes are easy and help grade ALOT so do well on those.

I love this class. I've looked in the book twice and I have a B+, maybe an A... he's a little nutty, but he makes a real effort to know everyone in a class of 150... I admire that. He's a good guy, pay attention and GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS!

Awesome guy, dont listen to anyone who says otherwise because they more than likely dont go to class or just are to stupid. hes kinda crazy at times and literally runs around the classroom, but hes a great professor, two thumbs up!

Go to the class and take notes and you'll do fine on the test. I haven't read anything from the book since the 2nd week. The map quizzes help your grade too.

Not an easy class, test get easier as you go but they are still hard. You need to study and go to class to stay up on whats goin on, because he doesnt follow the book or his reading outline

He is very funny and makes the class interesting. As long as you study the notes and know what the key terms are for each chaper for the exams, you are good to go. He is recommended.

Johnathon does he best to make sure everyone does well, his exams are tough but doable. hes a funny guy and makes going to class fun. go to the review session he basically tells you everything on the exam. take him.

Jonathan is awesome. He's honestly the best professor that I've had this year. He cares about his students so much! His course is challenging, but its worth it in the end. You learn alot and experience a truly awesome professor.

this profs is insane with the amount of energy he has. He cares about each individual student and memorizes who you are, even in a huge class. take notes, go to reveiw session, study the maps and you can't go wrong. He'll help you if you do.

If he doesn't like you watch out! your grades will suffer! Followed all the instructions for his research paper to a T and got an F. Never take this class. I didn't even do anything to get on his bad side. He just decided to punish me. My grade for him F!

Best teacher I've had at JMU! The material is a little boring and tests are a little hard, but they get easier and I highly recommend going to the review sessions!!! If you're going to take this class definitely get him.

one word: eccentric...he runs around the classroom, wears asian clothing, and rides his bike to work...he is very knowledgable and gets excited about what he's teaching - certainly makes the class entertaining and has a way of making you remember things

Jonathan is such a good teacher, he is very knowledgeable and has been almost everywhere in the world. His tests can be a little on the tough side but go to the review sessions and you'll do great. I loved his class, even at 8am

Energetic professor, I really enjoyed him. Tests require a little studying. Map quizzes every week- easy way to boost grade. Tests get more difficult as they go along, so don't slack off if you do well on the first one. Overall, great class.

TAKE THIS CLASS! it is my favorite class. He is extremely energitic and such a sweetheart. He tries really hard to get discussions going, and may make interestng comments to start them. He loves geography and has lots of stories to share. If you takes good notes and study then the tests are easy

Biggest complaint: class is HUGE. Map quizzes are easy and tests aren't too bad. Lectures are interesting, and he always wears something wacky. One research paper. Good professor. Not a bad class--for a gen ed.

Contrary to everyone else, I don't like him. And I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's because he tries too hard to be friends with the students. Or when he says something offensive and then acts surprised when people are offended. I've been trying really hard to like him;it's just not working

One word, AWESOME, thats exactly what Johnathan is.. If there is a class u need to take at 8 AM then let it be this one..U will never get bored because Johnathan knows how to make the class fun..Class is not hard, but it does require some work.. go to review sessions and you will be just fine

The only interesting thing about this class is his pictures from around the world. He teaches by asking questions the whole time and writing sloppy notes. He is VERY liberal and it's shown through his teachings. One class was on how affirmative action is necessary, but that's his opinion,not a fact

Professor Walker is highly entertaining! The class is all about discussion, so be prepared to talk a lot in class! Tests are difficult, go to every class and if you participate then it'll be easier! But the information is really interesting, so the class is easy to get through.

A big-headed fool who is unwilling to help or listen to his students. He is very rude when approached about any topic regarding his class (i.e. grades, tests, quizzes, other such help as that). Not an easy class and requires some work, like all classes. Not recommended to anyone anywhere.

walker is an arrogant pain in the ass. his attitude toward students in unacceptable to me besides the fact that he was rude to you if you countered him with the other side of an agruement. i did receive a B by not having too work that hard, but his unprofessional behavior made it a terrible class.

Well, if you are a minortiy, TAKE his class. I swear he is **** against white ppl, and he is white!! Easy class, but you must show up everyday and speak everyday! Always about five random questions on the test that have about 1/45 to do with what you learned. Just come to class and look past the fact that his beliefs are the only beliefs.

Walker is so awesome. I learned things about geography that I was iffy about. Go to class, speak up and you'll be fine. Questions are right from the notes. Don't believe what others are saying. His lectures were really interesting but he is such a dick grader. I never got higher than a B on his tests. Talk every class (and I do mean every class) if you want to get a decent participation grade. Make sure he knows who you are or those points will kick your gpa's ass at the end of the semester.

Johnathan is a very entertaining teacher. It is tough to get to an 8 am but he usually makes class pretty interesting. The tests are from the book and the lectures. If you go to the review sessions and ask questions you will be fine. PARTICIPATE!

I took him for gen ed, so i figured i had to try him out for this class. Same guy, same style, still missing some crayons in that crayola box. He'll entertain ya, that's for sure... just don't get on his bad side! Big paper, but he'll tell you exactly how to get a good grade in the class if you pay attention to what he's saying.

GREAT CLASS! Very interesting. Participate and do well on the side Map quizzes because in the end they can hurt your grade. Walker is very approachable and loves what he teaches. It seems that he doesn't like white people but don't let that not take the class. Take it if you have the chance. Only 3 exams and the Final isn't cummulative.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! He is a wonderful prof. Great class, but definitely not a cake class. Talk in class, he knows everyones name so he will know if you dont talk. Do well on map quizzes, they can definitely help your grade and they're not difficult; tests are tough but the class is so worth it! I actually enjoyed it to my surprise!!

Basically if you dont talk because you have speech anxiety, you get an F for class participation. You can never reason with him because he's stubborn and he makes no exceptions. Great professor, but his's wacked out of his mind...his notes that he writes are like stream of consciousness, they make no sense.

Take this class, stop reading this rating and enroll ASAP. Johnathan is energetic, helpful and above all he knows how to teach. His lectures are never ever boring. Study your maps and make sure you talk during class. Take decent notes from his entertaining lectures and you're sure to get an A. I promise.

I would HIGHLY recommend this class to EVERYONE. This class is straightforward & not very hard. However, you will learn and retain far more knowledge from this class than u will in any other GenEd. No doubt Johnathan is eccentric, but he works very hard to make it easier for you to learn. This class is awesome, painless, and very interesting. TAKE!

Johnathan is a great professor!!!!! He's so chill and relax. The class was really interesting and I learned a lot. Not an easy A though. Attendance is not mandatory but in a sense it is because there are map quizzes and he knows your name so if you don't show up to talk in class...there goes your participation grade. Over all awesome class.

By far one of my favorite teachers, I took his ggeog class and loved it so much that I took another one of his geography classes just for fun. You definitely have to study for his classes, but his tests are very fair. His ggeog class was 2.5 hours each class session and I was never bored!

He has an interesting way to present a boring topic. His tests aren't too bad as long as you take notes in class and GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! The main problem I have with his class is the participation grade. He knows everyone by name and knows if you don't speak. Avoid this class like the devil if you're shy about talking in class.

He's GREAT. He really cares about both what he is teaching and who he is teaching. In my class of 180, he knows each of our names. 10 map quizzes, 3 tests, and a Family Geog Paper. The paper is a bit of a pain, but it's worth it. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS! He goes over most of the test at them. He's easy to understand and hilarious. Great class!

Walker is a pretty laid back professor and cares about his students. mid term/final/15 page research paper required along with a few quizzes(including one on how well we use chopsticks). Since Walker loves the phillipines and taiwan they were naturally the focal point of the class.

Take this class!! I expected to hate this class, but Walker made it interesting and fun! He doesn't just read off a powerpoint, he tries to relate what the book says to real life issues. Go to class and the review sessions. Study for the map quizzes! And make sure you speak once a class. I learned a lot from this class and I definitely recommend it

Pretty good class overall...tests are sort of tricky though. 10 Map quizzes and only three tests. One paper to write bit it's not bad...he does a good job at keeping the subject interesting. Good class but definitely study a lot for the tests...and go to the review sessions!

As everybody has said, participate in class and mark down how many times you speak. You'll thank me later. 10 map quizzes, easy. Study hard for the tests... go to the review session the week before. Fun family-history project. Attendance (not) mandatory, just don't miss the quizzes.

The class is really all that it can be for an 8 a.m. i am NOT a morning person but was able to pay attention the entire time every class cause it's interesting. Learned the most in this class than any other but still got a c+/b- which is kind of frustrating. Just make sure you study really hard for the tests and that you def go to the study session

I am a straight A student who studies hard and participates in class. But taking this class was a last minute decision and worst idea ever. He's rude, obnoxious and has the ability to make everyone feel really uncomfortable. I've managed to get B's on his test but I studied my butt off and went to the study sessions. worst gened i've taken yet.

You have to get used to his 'sense of humor'. I enjoyed this class. Participation is graded; however he only picks on his favorites then gets uspet if no one says anything. Tests were hard and confusing.

despite having taken the same class two years in a row before this class, this had to be my favorite one of the three. Walker is a very enerjetic professor who makes his class fun. You're supposed to make at least one comment a class which can be difficult considering there are 200 kids. All the tests were fair and I never needed the textbook

Best professor i've had at jmu so far! the class was at 8 but totally worth it because walker makes it fun and exciting. He expects that you speak at least once a class but he makes it extremely easy for people to do so. map quizzes are cake and his tests are really not hard. just study everything he puts in his notes + you'll get an A. TAKE HIM!!!

Dr. Walker takes some getting used to (his teaching style and sense of humor), but once you get past that it's a great class. Tests are pretty hard, weekly map quizzes, and one paper, but take this class if you DON'T just want another pointless gened.

Prof. Walker is amazing! I learned so much from his class. It was an 8 am, but so worth waking up for because he's so energetic and makes the class so much fun. As long as you pay attention during class (which is easy to do) and study a little bit (go to review sessions) you will do just fine in his class!

I really enjoyed this class. At first, I thought I would hate waking up, but Jonathan starts the class off with a new music list every day to get the class started! Weekly map quizzes, fair tests (go to the review), and 1 research paper, which he grades pretty easily. I learned a lot in this class and I'm really glad that I took it.

If you like organization and clarity avoid this class. He isnt a very fair professor and unless you ask pointless questions you wont get discussion points. Tests are off of lectures and if you dont pay attention and go over the review terms he give you you wont do well. Avoid this class if you can

He is a very entertaining professor that really cares about the success of his students. He gives weekly map quizzes, three exams, one research paper, and a final exam. Be careful with discussion points, however. All in all, go to the review sessions, participate in class, and take the quizzes seriously and you will do well in this class.

Excellent professor. He is always energetic at class and knows his stuff. Yes part of the tests come from lecture, but that requires people to actually pay attention. The babies out there will call it 'hard' because it isn't spoon fed to them in powerpoints. He does get sidetracked occasionally but that doesn't make him less awesome!

his lectures are kind of all over the place but if you go to his office hours he's willing to help. he also has big review sessions the thurs. before tests which tend to be pretty hard. very helpful. there are weekly quizzes and like one big project. definitely take his class.

He is literally the most awesome professor on campus!! his notes can be a bit scattered but if you write everything down and look back on them you will have everything there. People get mad for having to talk but it's only once a week at most, get over it. Go to the review sessions before tests, SUPER helpful, that is how i Aced this class!

awesome teacher, he keeps you awake during class, likes to have fun and call people out for stuff. he's very big on letting everyone state their opinion. for the quizzes i would definitely play sporcle! it works so well. the tests are kind of hard but if you study the notes and make sure you know the material you should be fine.

Easily the best and most helpful teacher at JMU. Just an overall nice and funny, easy-going professor who loves to interact with the class and try to keep them up at the exhausting 8am hour. Quizzes are just world maps that you have to label countries, tests are moderately easy, and there's one paper to write at the end. For real, take him.

This man is a little crazy but in a good way. There are country quizzes worth ten points then 4 exams. The final isn't cumulative which is nice. He learns everyones' names. He shouts a lot and has no sense of style. Wears a tshirt, shorts/jeans every class. He has been to many countries which helps. Very good teacher though. Go to the test reviews

Geography as a course is easy material. Lectures are interesting (even at 8am), and he seems to really care about the students. 4 Map quizzes - easy points. Only thing I don't like is the level of difficulty for his exam are varied from exam to exam. Also you have one paper to write. Little bit of work and it's an easy A

Jonathan is actually nuts. Everyday you walk into class and there is music blaring, even at 8 am. He is very helpful and funny but a lot of the things he says are very uncomfortable and somewhat racial. Everyone just looks around at eachother like..DID HE REALLY JUST SAY THAT?! Honestly it is so entertaining and i could sit in his class all day!

AMAZING PROFESSOR! Totally wakes you up at 8am and is a very fun and sweet guy. Really relates to students and is the most down-to-earth professor I've ever had. There is a map quiz every week. I always studied the night before and aced them. Go to the test reviews and you'll ace those too. Never really used the textbook. TAKE HIM! SERIOUSLY! Easy!

One of the BEST professors i have had at JMU. TAKE HIM, even if its only offered at 8 AM. He makes the class so enjoyable, and you will be engaged the entire time. The class is in the stereotypical lecture hall with 200+ students but he LEARNS EVERYONE'S NAME. Woah...talk about commitment to the job. I wish jmu had more teachers like him :)

He gives you an A- if you have a B+ at the end but have progressed etc. Theres 4 tests, a really awesome family geog. paper and map quizes which are easy if you study and KNOW EVERYTHING on map. went hungover a lot

He talks about anything, which is great in class discussions. He grades really fairly. If you pay attention at all and take notes you'll be fine. I got a 64 on the first exam, but ended up with a 90 on the next one. I got a high C and he gave me a B b/c of how I progressed. He doesn't ask stupid questions that aren't about Geography. He's amazing!

I guess I'm the only one who hated this class. His lecture notes were so confusing and disorganized, and he always went off on tangents. Even in his reviews he only covers about half the stuff on the exam. Went to him twice for help and he basically just shrugged and said "oh well sorry." I studied and did all the assignments and still struggled

Not a fan. Not organized, frequently yells in the middle of an 8am class. He tries too hard to be cool, but it doesn't work. Don't forget to do the family geography, especially if you're in the first group to turn it in. Map quizzes don't seem hard, except he usually askes about some obscure island that you wouldn't think to study. Exams are rough.

Most uncomfortable class. Dr. Walker only focuses on the negative parts about each place we learned. The notes were extremely disorganized. Every class he said outrageous statements just to seem cool. He expects you to talk at least 15 times during the semester, which is unrealistic in a 150 person class and if you don't he calls you out on it.

Not my cup of tea. Honestly, it depends are want you are looking for in a professor. If you want someone who is laid back and and acts like "one of us," you may like him. But to me, he was unprofessional. If your opinion conflicts with his, he WILL call you out. Topics to avoid: Religion, Politics, Sexual Orientation, and Race. Not worth it.

Johnathan is an awesome person, but I would not recommend him as a professor. I loved that he was really energetic and fun, but his notes are very hard to follow, which leads me to my next point. His tests are based on the notes, but most of the time he doesn't even complete his thoughts in the notes. Extremely scatterbrained, and hard to follow.

This was a very enjoyable 8am class, and the information I learned from it was incredible. I now have a whole new perspective on the world. Johnathan is crazy and his notes go all over the place, which can be frustrating at times, but it is worth it. 4 tests and 1 paper. Great!

Don't be fooled by the "hard to follow" comments. This guy cares about student success; if he didn't, he wouldn't learn your name by the end of the semester. Stay engaged and learn geographic examples and bigger global pictures while studying and you will blow through the tests. I'd type 1000 characters of positivity for this guy if I could.

A great professor and very personable person! I didn't speak in class (5% of final grade), but he still knew my name pretty early on in the semester and he's always been friendly with me. His notes are where the tests come from, so make sure to go to class and have a friend lend you them if you miss it. Take him! It's an enjoyable social science.

There are three exams in total, the first one being very difficult. There was a pop quiz on the first day of class on the map of the United States. His class is pretty interesting, however he is a little bit intense at times. Also turn off your phone before class, he'll lose it if it goes off during class.

First of all instead of a powerpoint presentation or a straight lecture he handwrites his talking points on the doc cam. This would be totally fine normally, but he is LEFT HANDED and you can't read anything that he writes down. His class is fairly interesting for an 8 am however he comes across very harsh and his tests are unnecessarily hard.

Johnathan is all about lack of censorship, and his style may be seen as rude. He pushes you to discuss topics seen by some as uncomfortable (race, gender and privilege,,etc.) and will tell you if he thinks you are wrong. He is helpful in office hours and generally knows his stuff. He will likely offend you, but you'll learn something. Easy capstone

He is terrible in office hours, incredibly rude and offensive during class. I am not even sure why his rating is so high. . The papers and quizzes are the only thing that potentially help your grade. He only does multiple choice, and half of the multiple choice are things we have not even gone over in class.

He is a funny guy, talks about controversial topics which is cool at a liberal arts school. Not afraid to say what he believes and is open to hear your opinions too. This class was fun to go to, I had him for an 8am MWF and even though attendance is not required I got up and went each time! I would take this class again and I highly recommend him!

Go to his office hours, get to know him. He loves to get to know his students. And if you're struggling, he wants to help you improve. 8am sucks, but he will make it interesting. He talks about real things that are going on, things that are controversial and many will not want to talk about it, but he's not there to sugar coat it.

Johnathan is an all around great guy. I took his 8am in Miller, which I thought was going to be awful. The way he lights up the room with energy is beyond belief. Had this professor for 8am this semester and he made going to an 8am FUN! He's super funny and tells thing like it is. He's also very encouraging and really cares for his students! Definitely one of the best 8am classes I've had. Walker's energy is crazy and he really made getting up early worth it. Make sure you participate in class. That's one of the most important things to him. 10 pretty easy map quizzes, 3 tests, a paper, final isn't cumulative. He really knows his stuff and will teach you a lot. Take him!

Johnathan is honestly JMU's hidden gem. Not only is he dedicated and passionate about Geography and teaching about it, he genuinely cares about his entire class. He learns 95% of the class' names and although its an 8am, his class is never a drag. If I could take this class again, I would.

His lectures are unstructured & all over the place. His jokes get old & aren't worth it being an 8 am. Participate & don't skip (he learns names). He had really good reviews but nooooooo. He tries SO hard to be funny, usually by being inappropriate, and it's cringey. Not a very demanding class but definitely not an easy A. His notes are just him scribbling on a piece of paper and very unorganized. He always picks the smallest islands to be on the map quizzes. Definitely would not reccommend.

Dude is a beast! For a T/TH 8AM, he makes it worth your time and you'll never doze off. Easy map quizzes, two midterms, a final, a paper, and discussion are your grades. His jokes and sense of humor kept me lively. His way of giving us notes is that he writes on a piece of paper under the document cam. Definitely take him when you have the chance.

this was a pretty easy class overall. attendance isn't technically mandatory but you have to speak for a part of your discussion grade so you basically have to show up. Tests are easy if you study and go to lecture and he will definitely keep you awake even though its an 8 am. Sense of humor is crude and kinda hateful at times but he's funny

Not the worst class you'll ever take, but also definitely not the best. Walker has a very crude sense of humor, tries way too hard to be funny, is unorganized, doesn't ever reply to emails, and is a professor who doesn't care what's going on in your life outside of his class. Overall it's a fairly easy class though if you show up and participate.

Best professor I have ever had, makes class worth getting up early for. If you take decent notes and go to review sessions you will do good on the tests. Map quizzes aren't too hard, just make sure you know when they are. He speaks his mind so toughen up and don't get offended. Also, hardly used my textbook, so don't bother even buying one.

Johnathan Walker is one of the greatest professors I have EVER had. He WILL change you life, I promise! All the people giving negative reviews aren't giving the guy a chance. He's just misunderstood is all. He's absolutely amazing. The class is not the easiest A, but you will get an A if you put in the some work. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS!

Don't take! If you think geography is an A easy, then don't take this class. 10 map quizzes (some easy, some difficult), 1 paper, and 4 exams. Final is non-cumulative and exams are pretty difficult. His review sessions are not helpful and his notes are all over the place. He can be pretty rude and a big part of your grade is discussion

He is a super energetic professor which made the 8 AM class easier to stay awake in. He memorizes all of his students names and tries to get to know everyone. He may seem intimidating in the classroom sometimes but he truly is a caring and understanding man. Participation does matter and he remembers who spoke at the end of the semester.

Really great gen ed! Keeps lectures lively and humorous, and makes the material really interesting. You get what you put into the class honestly. If you want to do well and have fun than chances are you will, he really give you every opportunity. Would 100% take his class again, it's definitely worth the 8 am.

He pretends that he's a new innovative professor who has class discussion, but fails to realize that he manipulates the entire conversation. He says hates self censoring but he purposefully dismisses ideas. It's easy A as long as you study tiny islands for the map quizzes, but its ultimately not worth it to get screamed at about race in the morning

Don't take this class. I signed up for this gened because I heard great things, but it has to be one of the worst classes I've ever taken. He's very rude and makes very inappropriate comments and remarks to students . There's map quizzes every week and three tests. Class isn't super difficult but sitting through his lectures were painful.

8am lectures were really energetic. Learned most peoples name in a 200 person class. Wasnt super political after the first week. Study for map quizzes and its an easy A (my only mistake). professor walker is a little crazy for an 8 am class but he really cares about his students. 3 exams and a non cumulative final. he provides review sessions that tell you what exactly is on the exam so GO TO EVERY SINGLE ONE. textbook isnt needed so dont buy it. weekly map quizzes and a family geography essay at the end of the semester.

I highly recommend choosing to take Professor Walker. He is very energetic and passionate about his class. As long as you show up for class and go to the review sessions before the exams, there's no reason to not get a good grade. Be sure to study for the map quizzes each week, but they're not too difficult.

Such a great guy. The class consists of 3 tests, a paper, some quizzes, and participation. He holds review sessions before every test that are very helpful. The quizzes are easy for the most part, but one question is always very specific that a lot of people do not get right. Overall I definetly recommend.

The only way to get a good grade on the exam is to go to the review session where he tells you the answers to the exam. He is very confusing during lectures, just scribbles on a piece of paper all class. Acts like he cares about all his students but when I went to his office he talked over me and insulted me the whole time.

Walker is an awesome guy. He makes learning geography interesting. You take 10 map quizzes that aren't bad if you study, write an 8 page paper, and take 3 exams (all multiple choice). Go to the exam review sessions- they will help SO MUCH!! You get a participation grade at the end of the semester for how many times you talked in class too.

He is one of my favorite professors at JMU. He is so caring about his students. He is very blunt and can rub people the wrong way, but I am the same way so I didn't mind it. For extra credit, you can bring in cans for a food drive that he hosts; what other professor would do that? Despite it being a big lecture, he will remember your name Take him!

Professor Walker is an awesome guy. The test is based on 10 map quizzes, 3 tests, and a complicated research paper. He hosts review sessions before every test which help A LOT and I would highly recommend going to them if you want to receive a good grade on the test. Professor Walker is very awesome at what he does. Hes very approachable if you ever need help with something. We have quizzes on Tuesdays and a map he posts on canvas, filling it out and studying is a must. Its the exact same map on the quizzes 10 in total. IF YOU CAN TAKE HIM! Easily the most caring professor I have ever had. Emailed us weekly reminding us that our mental health matters more than any class we're in. Makes you want to go to class because lectures are so much fun with his music and running around. Exams arent too hard. Does weekly map quizzes which are super easy. 10/10 recommend.

He struggles with technology making the class frustrating for everyone. He scribbles notes on a webcam in bad handwriting which is hard to read and has minimal info so you will be relying on the textbook. Attach a geographic example to everything you learn and you'll pass. It just sucks that I missed out on a supposedly great in person professor

Overall, good professor. The pandemic made it a little difficult to enjoy the experience that previous students would write about in their reviews. For an 8am course, he was pretty energetic. I actually enjoyed this class and im not really a big fan of geography. He plays music in the beginning of class which is nice. So worth it!! Prof. Walker has been so considerate and accommodating to all his students, from athletes to introverts. Three exams, not cumulative, map quizzes weekly, and one paper. Unfortunately, professor walker gave me the worst experience I have ever had with a JMU faculty member. He deducts points from your grades for no clear reason, is snippy and intimidating over email, and belittles student. Awful.

Rude and unprofessional. Walker is a very insensitive and aggressive professor. I would never recommend anyone to take his class. He creates a very hostile classroom environment, has no powerpoint or visual aid, and makes quizzes/tests unnecessarily difficult. He does not create a classroom environment that is comfortable for students. Don't take!!

Coming from someone who attended his 8am class, he's actually really interesting and nice. he keeps the students engaged and will always listen to them if he says something wrong. Mr walker is truly great. Not everyday you come across a professor who wants to help/ see you succeed. I was struggling in the beginning. Came to office hours for help and it honestly became better from there. He is understandable, great course, and I couldnt recommend him more. If you find the course hard, reach for help! He wont disappoint.

He sometimes would get attitudes with students, like if someone went on their phone he would freak out. He also only grades you with map quizzes, 3 tests, and 1 paper. If you screw up on a test your grade is completely ruined. He physically WRITES the notes while he is lecturing, which made things confusing at times. He can be very nice tho.

If you ask to meet for office hours, he really does help you a lot especially over your grade. Hands down, best choice for GEOG200. Took his class last semester and there was never a boring lecture. 80% of exam material is in lectures, so try to go to all of them. He holds review sessions before every exam, which are very helpful, but are held rather late at night. Really good at engaging students and making jokes. Highly recommend.

This man is a kind person. Earlier in the semester I informed him of a struggle I was having and he was very understanding. He also makes the effort to learn names. I am NOT an early person, but he makes an 8am worth it. The course is test heavy, so make sure to allocate time for that. Funny, engaging, and caring professor. I recommend w/o a doubt

I loved him so much. He loves to run around class and always has energy. He makes going to an 8 am fun, he's funny and very sweet. He does teach fast but its nothing I couldn't keep up with. He loves what he teaches and it shows. There are map quizzes every Thursday and only a 2 exams.

For an 8 am, it's not bad. He's very high energy which helps for being in class that early. There are a few tests and one major paper. Also map quizzes like once a week. He put my paper grade in canvas as a 100, left it there for 2 weeks and then changed it to an 84. That's my only complaint.

Professor Walker was a great professor. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. His tests are very easy but lecture based, so show up. Very passionate about the subject so lectures are interesting He make a review secession for each exam and the review basically outlines the test. Always plays music at the beginning of class.

Prof Walker is a great option for an 8am class. His class is very lecture based but he basically gives you all you need to know about the exam at the optional review session so go. He is very caring and compassionate and if you go to him for help, he WILL accommodate you. Make sure you show up to class, if you don't you won't succeed.

Absolutely love Prof Walker. You can tell he cares about his students because he takes the time to get to know each student that comes to his lectures. He can be a bit blunt, but that's his personality. Lectures can be boring, but he tries to make them fun. Go to the review sessions, he shares questions that will be on the tests.

Prof. Walker was an interesting teacher to have as an 8 am. He is all over the place but a really nice person. Notes are sometimes difficult to follow. Genuinely one of the funniest people I've ever met. He does a lot of satire & doesn't actually mean what he says, which makes the class very interesting. A bit disorganized & all over the place, but he cares a lot for his students. Grades 3 tests and final is noncumulative,10 quizzes & a paper. Not sexist, I'm a girl and treats me the same as guys.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Walker is awful. The family paper is the worst assignmnet ever. I worked on it for weeks and still got a 63. The test are over random information that he says in class, so you have to be in class. There is 2 exams and a bunch of map quizzes. He is honestly so annoying please take a different class.

So, yes. He did give us a pop quiz on the first day of class, but he did let us retake it (as a pop quiz again). All other quizzes and tests are clearly announced from day 1 and all were shown on the Canvas Dashboard. Attendance isn't graded, but you should definitely go. It's pretty easy to fall behind if you don't go to class. Take good notes!!

Professor Walker is genuinely my favorite professor that I have had at JMU so far. While he can be a little bit headstrong and very out there, he really cares about his job and the students he is working with. If you work with him, go to class, participate, and are willing to put in effort, he will make your life 10x easier. I highly recommend him.

Great 8 AM Prof. Walker is genuinely my favorite instructor I've had throughout high school and college. He makes class incredibly interesting and makes an effort to know and bond with his students, and he is hilarious. His class can be difficult as the tests are challenging if you don't study heavily. 10 map quizzes 3 tests 1 paper & participation grades. The paper is hard & inconvenient if all your grandparents are dead. Walker has good intentions but the things he says sometimes come off as racist & class can be uncomfortable because he is unaware of this. Its hard to study for his tests bc lecture is detailed. Genuinely such a good professor. He has a good sense of humor and keeps an 8am class interesting & entertaining. He is very knowledgeable and interactive with the class. People who leave bad reviews about Dr. Walker clearly didn't follow his course correctly. All he asks is that you come to class, office hours, participate, show that you care, and you will get an A. A great choice for an 8 am. If you can name at least 1/2 of the world's countries already, this class will be a breeze. The family paper is an interesting assignment, though it takes a while. Dr. Walker has been the best professor I've had at JMU. He's such a caring, unique, wise person. Loved talking to him and hearing his perspective on things. His class was not difficult. Show up, participate in class discussion. 2 papers, they were long and intensive but overall simple. Would take any class again with him!

Getting up for this 8 AM class was definitely difficult. He made the lectures as interesting as he could, and once I was in class I enjoyed it; however, I found the tests to be difficult. The exams are 65 questions and very challenging. There is a research paper worth 100 points which I thought would help my grade. I worked very hard on it and followed the guidelines exactly and got a 70. Challenging class for no reason. Friends with other professors had easier exams/work. Would not recommend.

He is crazy. He runs up and down the lecture hall at 8am. I think he means well but some of the jokes he says are out of line and not funny. The class has weekly geography quizzes which aren't hard but some are very meticulous. He has one big paper that he grades so harshly on. The tests aren't cumulative but they are material heavy.

definitely a character. 100% means well but can make some out of line comments here and there. Prof. Walker is one of my favorite professors! He lectures the whole class but makes it fun and interesting with music and outfits. The class is fairly easy if you show up and take notes. He's hilarious and if you participate, you get 15 points. Only thing is that there is a Family Geog paper worth 15% of your grade and I got a 69 which was outrageous for a gen ed. I highly recommend starting that project at the beginning of the semester. Everything else is chill. He walks into class with traditional clothes from different countries

The material isn't hard, it is just a lot to keep up with since his notes are chaotic and gets distracted easily. He's nice, but he makes some weird uncomfortable comments about things that could easily be taken the wrong way. The map quizzes are also difficult because you have to be able to label things the size of an atom.

Very fun guy to be in class for. Map quizzes are an pretty much an easy 8/10 but the final 2 points you have to label a country that you probably couldn't even see on the paper. The 1 essay was annoyingly harshly graded, tests are just a lot because there is so much information needed on each one.

Great Professor and pretty funny! Loved it for an 8am. You can pass this class if you just study for the map quizzes and exams. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS he will tell you what will be on the exam. There's map quizzes, three exams including the final which isn't cumulative and a family research paper. It's an 8am class but I never fell alseep cause he makes it really interesting. He was honestly one of the best professors I've had at JMU and led me to switch my major to Geography because I enjoyed his lectures and course so much. There are 10 map quizzes worth 10% of your grade. One every week. There's a family essay worth 15%. And 75% is made up of 2 exams and a final. He will put things that were never mentioned in class or in the exam material files on the exams.

Bad teacher. It's not hard but he is unorganized during class sessions and writes notes down on a piece of paper which turns out messy. There's a family geography paper that is graded harshly and due dates are unfairly created based on last name. He can be rude and he often brushes off students. The class seems to take forever, it's not worth it

Dr. Walker is a great professor who sometimes makes awkward jokes, but he's enthusiastic and makes an 8am class more enjoyable. Lectures may drag bc of the amount of content, but if you prepare for and attend class and go to the review sessions, it's very manageable. I LOVE Jonathan. This was by far my favorite class this semester. Every morning was enjoyable and interesting. The class has a TON of info. 10 map quizzes, do research on tiny islands. Family geography paper is a nightmare, start it EARLY (like a month in advance.) Attend every review session you can! There is a textbook, we really don't read it.

Dr. Walker is a very cool guy, which made the 8 am lectures a lot less draining. All of his tests are multiple choice and he does a review session before every test which covers basically every topic you need to know for them. The only issue I experienced is his policy of not having phones out in class as it distracts him, otherwise great class!

Very lecture heavy and he often just goes on rants about stuff that isn't really important. He always has a story/example for the stuff we're covering, but sometimes it's not very believable. If you go to class and take notes on the lecture you should be fine, but there is stuff on the exam that he doesn't cover in class.

Super energetic and clearly has ADHD. 10 map quizzes (easy besides Africa) that you take basically every Tuesday. His notes are sometimes unorganized because he likes to jump around various topics and he handwrites them on a pretty crappy projector. You HAVE to talk/answer questions like 5-10 times, he brings it up every lecture.

Professor Walker was very kind and made an 8 am manageable to attend. That being said it's entirely too difficult for a gen ed. The exams were very hard, averages 60-70. The paper is extremely tedious and graded harshly, the average was a 75. I ended with a B-, but worked extremely hard for it. I would try to find an easier professor if possible.
