Great Professor, very involved with his students learning.

This professor rocks he makes impossible theroms like 1+1=2
Great math teacher.
Excited about teaching. Doesn't put me to sleep. Really helpful. Nice guy.
Great Class. Easy and straightforward. No tricks!
Just one word: GREAT!
Best professor I've ever had at Purdue. Hands down.
He is so excited about teaching, it's awesome. I love going to his lecture. he makes everything perfectly clear. I think he actually likes his job... Whenever he introduces a new theorem, he gives an example, and before starting it, says-in a very excited voice-"Now guys, watch THIS. Don't let them fake you out, its easy!" :)
Best math teacher i've had
Best math teacher I've had.He keeps you awake with his excitement for math. He claims to do integrals with his knees. Watch his finger when he gets excited.
good prof
He is such a great professor. You can really tell that he loves his job. He is always smiling. He likes showing you something and shakes his finger and says "now watch me do it faster!"
He is a great professor and person. I was not even signed up for his class but liked him so much I started going to it instead of my actual 261 prof. Keeps the mood light with phrases like,"Hold on to your hats!" and "Watch this!". Loves his job. Teaches so that any problem is understandable if you pay attention and follow his steps.
Johnny Brown is awesome! Even if you don't sign up for his lecture, still go-definitely worth it! He explains difficult material very clearly and he is willing to answer any student's question or re-explain material if the class is not understanding it.
He is simply awesome.
J-Breezy is the man. Literally the best math professor ever. If you don't sign up for his section, you've lost your mind.
He's my man. I want him back for Calc3
He is an awesome math teacher!
Uses lots of helpful examples. Could use more variety of examples. Explains thoroughly, rarely messes up.
Probably one of the math professors I had. Very funny and doesn't put you to sleep even though its a math class. His notes are excellent. If you have a choice between math professors, pick him! You wont regret it
The best at Purdue when it comes to introductory math courses. Take him and you wont regret it.
Amazing teacher, amazing person.
He's the best! Get your butt to class!
Great guy. Great class. I never really got to personally know him, but his lectures are clear, funny, useful, and overall he is a fair guy.
He is probably the best instructor in the math department. He is also probably the only math instructor who will put as much work into a class as he expects his students to. If you can get him for a course, I implore you to do so. He is funny, kind, and most importantly an excellent instructor.
Probably the best Math teacher I've ever had. He's very easy to understand and he's also pretty funny. He has very clear notes and you probably won't need to even open your textbook.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Pretty funny and easy to understand. Just take notes in class and you won't need to open your textbook.
Great guy and a great professor. Johnny's really interesting to listen to, and he does a great job of providing help to answer questions
This guy is the best professor at Purdue, hands-down. He is very funny, he explains the material clear and well, and I wish that he was my professor for Math 161. He keeps the class interested, so I do not have anything negative to say at all.
Johnny Brown is the best professor I have had so far at Purdue. Hold on to your hats everybody
he was amazing
Johnny Brown is honestly the best professor ever to grace Purdue with his presence. He made the class much more interesting than it should have been. Hold on to your hats everybody!
Some methods he introduced in class were not the easiest and most efficient one.
Fantastic professor. Easily understandable, and funny too.
Fantastic professor. Very easy to follow and understand. Very funny guy, as well.
Took this way back in 2011, he was very nice and most importantly a CLEAR speaker and explainer. I personally sucked and had to retake the course, but I blame myself. Tests were MC and really hard.
Johnny Brown is the man!
He is very clear and easy to understand (something unheard of in the Purdue Math department..). The course itself is difficult but he presents the material in an orderly fashion and constantly refers back/reviews. Study guides from his section saved me. I audited his lecture unofficially and definitely find it helpful.
SUPER AWESOME!
Best professor I have ever had. Everything makes sense in his lectures. I actually wanted to attend class.
Professor Brown taught the course in a pretty straight forward way. Absolutely no trick questions on exams and the homework followed the lectures very well.
The course is very touch, but J Breezy makes it easier. His lectures are clear and examples easy to follow and he has this great habit of going over something again if several students went to office hours because they were confused about the same topic.
Clear, straightforward examples during lectures. Is not trying to pull any tricks with the material. Approachable guy who will crack jokes once in a while during lecture. Best part is he's on your side. Tries his best to make fair exams. Students had a terrible average on one exam compared to previous semesters and he tried to vouch for them.
Johnny Brown was easily my favorite teacher so far at Purdue. His lectures are very clear and ordered, include examples, and he adds personal tips and helpful visualizations. He even holds extra review sessions the weekends before each test and the final. If you are taking MA 261 you should be taking it with Johnny Brown
Professor Brown is the best math teacher I've ever had, hands down. His teaching style is clear: 1. Go over the theory 2. Explain the method 3. Do examples
Great professor. Clearly explains the concepts and takes his own time to hold review sessions before exams. Had no problems with homework. Loved every bit of it. Must-have if you r taking ma 261.
Lectures are real easy to follow if you focus. Makes help sessions when exam is near and even for midterms. Homework is quite hard but you can always ask your TA. For exams, you can do it if you understand well in lectures and do past years.
Simplifies the material and is good at making the dots connect
Amazing calculus professor. He writes his notes during class and gives clear direction for solving problems. Very easy to follow. He held 2 hour study sessions before exams to give students the opportunity to drop in and ask questions or simply watch him solve problems. Aside from being a helpful professor, he is personable and entertaining.
Good professor in general. clear writing and explaination. wants students to do well. have extra class before exam for you to ask questions
Johnny Brown is just the most jolly professor I've ever had. He's all around super happy, which is striking cause he teaches math. He's a very good professor - clear, easy to understand, good handwriting, and fair. In addition, he truly cares about his students. He puts up study guides for tests, which is just awesome. Would definitely recommend.
Absolutely the best professor on campus. Lectures are clear and if u study for the exam, u gonna do great.
By far the best professor I've ever had. He's just so enthusiastic in lecture, even though he teaches math. His tests are very fair, he grades quickly, and Dr. Brown genuinely cares about his students. Definitely take him if you can.
Absolutely amazing. He teaches with such enthusiasm that it makes you enjoy learning linear algebra. Concise, easy to understand, and articulate. All around best professor I've ever had.
One of the best professors I've had at Purdue thus far. He came to class every day and made me smile or laugh, he is the nicest man. I thoroughly enjoyed being in his class. He explained the material very well and really made sure he put himself in the shoes of his student's so he could make sure we'd understand the material. I HIGHLY recommend!
Currently in Prof. Brown's MA 262 class and I've nothing but good things to say about. He has extensive knowledge in the subject he is teaching and he tries very hard to make sure that this knowledge gets passed on to his students. In fact, today, the Sunday before the Final Exam, he held an extra 2 hour help session to help his student. Take him!
Amazing professor. He has incredible raw ability to teach- comes up with great examples and counterexamples on the fly. So prepared for every class. Very funny. He teaches with so much enthusiasm!! Great professor doesn't make the material any less difficult you've gotta study!
Dr. Brown's diff eq class is probably my favorite math class I've taken at Purdue. He makes sense of the information so well, and doing well on exams feels much more rewarding than it would in other classes for this reason. You can tell he has such a fierce passion for what he teaches.
He is a nice guy and teaches really well, agreed. But do not take him as a professor. He grades the exams brutally. Even if you got most of your work right for problems, and messed up in the end, he won't give you many points for that question. He is a really tough grader, and doesn't even respond to his e-mails.
Great lectures and always keeps students engaged throughout class. You can tell he really cares about his students, and he will "do everything legally possible" to help. If you pay attention, exams shouldn't be a problem. 10/10 would take again.
Super funny and nice guy. Knows his stuff and answers questions to his best ability. As long as you go to class and do homework regularly, you'll come out with at least a B.
Tests were fairly textbook problems, but aside from trivial arithmetic errors you would get less partial credit than you might expect. Quizzes every recitation, but the quizzes were fairly similar to homework. Similar problems get worked out right before recitation, so between paying attention and doing the homework I aced every quiz.
This man is an absolute legend. Absolutely made me feel at home first year of college. Super energetic, funny, and great professor. Married to math, or to a wife, either way would date him. I looked forward to this class every day because it was such a breather from the regular monotonous drone of other classes. Was a little slow but well taught :)
He's one of the best math teachers I have had in a while. His teaching is very clear and easy to understand. He does a lot of example problems. Homework is weekly - both online and handwritten. Exams are open ended questions and multiple choice. Sometimes there are extra credit questions
Johnny Brown is a very clear professor, he gives at least one example per new content. After doing it once, he will skip all the intermediate steps and skip to the answer, so pay attention to the first example. He gives you a ton of extra resources for exams; practice exams, a study guide of concepts, and lists of properties concepts. Do all HW.
MA 265 is a challenging class, but Dr. Brown makes it so much easier by providing lots of useful examples. His lecture is clear and totally understandable, and he also makes study guides to prepare you for exams. Definitely one of the best math professor at Purdue!
Enthusiastic during every single lecture, Brown keeps the class engaging while making relatively difficult content much easier to understand.
Johnny Brown is probably the best person employed by Purdue. Hes accessible, fair, enthusiastic and cares for his students education. Every lecture is worth attending, as his knowledge and articulation make this class much less daunting. Your entire grade rides on exams but its no problem; he wont trick you. Seriously, this guy is the best.
He is a great lecturer and an entertaining professor -- it was always well worth attending class. For Linear, he stuck to the basics and prepared you very well for the exams with outlines and example problems. Really hope to have him again in a future class.
Enjoyed going to lectures. Pay attention in class, it is super helpful for exams. The homeworks are few and not too bad. They reinforce material taught in class. Extremely fair and in my opinion, enjoyable exams.
This man is a god. Like others say he is very charismatic and exciting during lecture. His averages are always high which is great. Even then he still put a curve on the course somehow, which was crazy. Overall amazing Professor.
He really knows the material that he is teaching and cares that his students learn from him. He presents the material in a great way and his tests are very fair.
He is a great mathematics professor. Very engaging and passionate about what he is teaching; and it shows in each lecture. He never comes to class without a clear plan and clear set of examples for the day. Each class he had some of the highest attendance I have ever seen of a Purdue Math Class.
Dr. Brown is great at teaching math and gives lots of opportunities for help!
Professor Brown practically made ordinary differential equations easy. His lectures and notes were organized, thorough, and engaging, the exams were fair, and he held extra review sessions before midterm and final exams. If you go to lectures and do the homework, you'll pass easily. Probably my favorite math teacher ever.
Great at explaining
Really good and teaches very well.
The tests are heavy and there is a quite a bit of homework, but that's because the course itself (MA161) is just a meaty course. It's do-able, just be ready to put in the work. The professor himself is very sharp and experienced. He can be a little jaded sometimes, but he writes awesome study guides for every exam. So overall, he is firm, but fair.
Professor Brown is very organized and has a clear goal planned for each lecture. He is accessible outside of class and makes sure to review properly before exams.
Johnny Brown is a good professor who teaches sufficiently. However, at least once per class, his computer crashes and Dr. Brown just stands on the stage like a lost puppy waiting for the tech team to fix it. This wouldn't be a problem if it didn't waste 2-5 minutes of class and wasn't in the middle of a problem. Overall good professor.
Calc1610 was a tough class, but a good one. Its about as tough as one would expect. Tests were difficult, but easy to prepare for. Johnny is a great prof overall and an amazing lecturer, really good about telling you the right stuff you need to know. Plus he was great about posting his notes and lectures online as well as having a great structure
Brown is a fantastic professor. It can't be easy having a lecture hall of 700+ students, but he makes it look easy. He is interesting to listen to and keeps things interesting. He does a good job at explaining concepts, and I would love to take another class with him again.
He cares about his students knowing and is easy to ask questions when outside of class. While the lectures tend to drag on, he records them and you can rewatch them. He is funny though so sometimes it isn't a bad choice to go to class. The exams are hard, but not impossible. He gives lots of study materials, so do those and you should do alright.
BAE ASF. This class was pretty easy and Brown is an amazing professor. His lectures themselves are fine, but I always fell asleep because the lights in STEW are super dim. Tests reflect the concepts we are taught. If you study, keep up with lectures, attend recitation and do the homework, you definitely can get an A.
The class is quite difficult, but Dr. Brown is an amazing lecturer. He works through new topics step-by-step and I never felt lost in any of his lectures. The course is still hard though given all the recitation quizzes and the difficult midterms.
Professor Brown was an excellent calculus lecturer. His humor and lively personality kept the lectures interesting, and he was great at explaining even the trickiest concepts. Also, I felt like he genuinely cared about his students, and he made useful exam study guides, so I always felt well prepared for the tests.
Great professor just a very hard class. Tests are all multiple choice which I really hate because you get no partial credit for work shown and I dont think its a fair/accurate representation of our actual understanding of the material.
Good professor. Cares a lot about the students and his lectures weren't bad. Answered student questions on Piazza before exams, and created study guides for exams with worked-out solutions. The course MA161 is just terrible in general, but they curve it, but a great professor.
Personally I did not like Professor Brown's lecture style. I found he skips steps on example problems that lead me to be confused. Most of my peers seem to like him, so I wouldn't worry if he's your to be professor. Spend lots of time understanding the material, and go to office hours with the TAs if you don't understand something.
Professor Brown is a great Professor who will do anything in his power to help you succeed. He creates very helpful study guides and quickly responds to questions outside of class, as long as you are willing to pay attention and ask questions you will pass his class
Professor Brown is a fantastic professor. You can really tell he enjoys teaching and wants to spread his knowledge. He has so many resources for his students that are extremely helpful.
Writes notes while explaining - by far the best professor I've had.
Professor Brown is by far the best math teacher you could ask for. He cares about the learning of his students, while he also tries to make the lectures entertaining enough. He is very helping when it comes to study guides and general questions. You can see that he is passionate about his work.
Johnny Brown is a really good professor and he gives good feedback when asking questions. Purdue Math is just hard
Took the class in fall 2021, the lectures are fantastic. Dr. Brown teaches every lesson in a very easy to understand way, makes you feel all the concepts are like common sense. Exams are not hard but easy to loose point, so make sure you do tones of past papers. Wish I could take another math class with him!!
Overall, just a down to earth Math teacher. My main critique is he's doesn't always break things down in immediately digestible ways. I took Calc before and sometimes things still confused me. His exams are fair, final was really straightforward. He gives plenty of good resources to prep for exams, good lectures, and was a good lecturer.
Good professor. Respected, and for good reason. Lectures are useful but not boring.
Best math professor at Purdue. If you can get him for any subject DO IT. He explains the curriculum so that it's easy to understand and creates extra resources outside of class to help the students. He is a very caring professor and one of the best I have ever had.
Best professor I've had at Purdue so far! He taught us the many applications of linear algebra and why it's so useful. You could see his passion for it every time in lecture. He made complex topics easy to understand and explained in a clear and concise manner. Lots of resources to prepare for exams, and the exams themselves were very fair.
He's very good at explaining the content and the homework and exams are all very easy. That being said, the course covers basically the bare minimum of MA 35100, and is far less detailed than other courses. Take it if you want an easy A, but not if you want to learn a lot of content.
Professor Brown is really passionate about what he teaches. He knows his stuff and it's very enjoyable being in his class. Definitely recommend taking diffeq with him if you want the class to teach you a lot and have manageable workload.
Funny guy, so lectures weren't boring. Easy content.
Great prof who makes complex topics easy to grasp. Homework and exams are manageable. unstuck AI helped me prep for tests. Covers basics, so take it for an easy A, not in-depth learning.
Love Professor Brown!!!!
