Had him for an upper level archaeology class. He is intelligent and did a great job of giving students the hands on experience that makes archaeology classes so much fun.
smart. affable. hands down the coolest guy on unt.
I think the class # was 2080 at least. He was my lab teacher, cool guy, real world arch exp. He will go over the answers for the work book most of the time demos tool making in class and manages to cut himself often while doing it lol
I can't remember the exact class number, but it was Archaeological science. HE was SO fun to listen to! He also had a great sense of humor. He individually helped me with questions I had for a test, and I did great on it. Such a nice guy! I miss him so!
Very laid-back teacher with an interesting style of teaching. He kept everything simple and easy to understand, and he definitely knew his stuff. Study guides were a little lacking, but overall a good class.
Nice guy, easy going. Tests are almost entirely from the lectures, so don't miss class. Doesn't say 'no' to grade curves. Gives reviews before exams and will go into detail about his essay questions but you have to coax it out of him. The second test is by far the hardest.
Very nice guy... and very knowledgeable about what he is talking about! He also tries to break up the boringness that sometimes happens so that is always good!!
He is a bad teacher, his tests dont relate to the reviews at all. However he does give a cure on most of the tests. I wouldnt recommend him at all
Very laid-back teacher. He uses powerpoints for his lectures, which will be the key source for his tests. He likes to put stuff on the tests that aren't on the review, but for the most part if you listen in class you should be ok. He gives extra credit for attendence sometimes and curves the grade on tests. I would recommend him for students.
I feelbad for him 'causehe really wants people tolove geology likehedoes (and he reallyreally does), buthe's stuck teaching undergrads who don't givea****. He's sonice, andifyou pay attention, you'll learn, but I mean...how interesting canhe make groundwater really? My advice isthat, ifyou take him, don't goto reviews. They are counterproductive.
Really nice guy, very boring class. I could barely pay attention. Lots of notes but he throws stuff in the tests that weren't on the powerpoint. You have to take very careful notes and he can ramble about nothing for a very long time.
Not the best lecturer in the world, he often skips around in what he talks about. However, I learn a TON from this class. If you pay close attention, are vaguely interested in the subject, and take lots of notes from what he's saying (not just the powerpoint) than you will do well in the lecture. He's a great guy, very helpful, and really laid back
He's very laid back and knows his stuff. His reviews don't have anything to do with the tests so I would not recommend taking him if you are looking for an easy A. It's ridiculous that he makes the test extremely hard for non-major classes. If you are worried GPA he is not the professor to take.
his reviews are completely different from material that is actually on tests. classes are boring but he tries to make them decent with his sense of humor. do not take if you want an A unless you are an archaeology major
Very funny, tests are hard, reviews don't help much there is a lot of material not on the review that is on the test. Only counted 3 of the 4 tests though, lab is easy. Takes roll sometimes and curves all tests except the final. Interesting class.
Decent teacher; he obviously loves his subject. His tests are really hard because his powerpoints are like 95% pictures- not a lot of information. Science is one of my worst subjects, hence the not great grade. I did better in the lab than the class. If you like science you'll prob like this class.
I also had him for ARCH 2800. Rally nice guy, I do enjoy his classes (otherwise I wouldn't be taking him again). Tests can be very difficult, but he has been better about not jumping around subjects so much. Interesting classes, great sense of humor. Really wants you to be interested in that he teaches.
I'm not sure what some of these people are smoking. Prof. Byers is a great instructor! His lectures are PowerPoint based, but all of the info presented in lecture is EXACTLY what's on the exams, and they aren't that bad. If you go to class, take notes and attend reviews you'll pass the course! FYI, he does take random attendance for a grade.
Really a great class and an outstanding professor. Definitely has a passion for his subject. Great sense of humor, lots of fun, but you do have to study. Totally an advocate for his students success. I highly recommend any section he's teaching. I wish I could take another class with him. One of the best profs I have had @ UNT.
He is so awesome and funny! If you are like me and are dreading taking a science course, i'd suggest taking this one. He makes the whole science aspect of the class fun. He really keeps you interested. Best teacher i've had so far.
Johnny is awesome and so funny! If you are like me and dreaded taking a science then i recommend taking this ARCH2800. He makes the whole science aspect of the course funny/fun. He is pretty laid back. Overall, he is a great teacher.
He enjoys predicting test failure from his class. Most notes bullet points are cryptic or riddles. He has an issue with just presenting information. He goes out of his way to cover material not in the text or the internet (his own words). I don't get the feeling that he wants success out of the class. Would be so much easier if he used a text.
Johnny is great. He does give really cryptic notes via his PP slides but if you write/type all of the info, you should have what you need to complete the reviews he gives out before the exams. Also, he let us skip the final if we liked our averaged grade from the first 3 exams. I had an A so got to skip the final. :)
I loved this class. Johnny is one of my all time favorite teachers. He's very laid back and manages to make boring topics a little less boring. I highly recommend him.
Byers is very laid back. (We joke that he is a cross between Jeff Bridges and Ron White) He's funny and interesting, but his tests can be difficult. Just be sure to go to the review days.
hint: google the qustions that are on the review- word for word... you should find that someone has made online flash cards for you to study with... easy B.. great subject and he is pretty cool and he skydives
I see somebody else already mentioned the awesome flash card thing. Props to whoever uploaded them! Professor Byers is a really friendly guy, but the class was kind of dull. The first test is really easy, but the second kicks in up a notch. Remember that. There isn't any homework or projects, but attendance is mandatory.
Johnny is a great teacher and he likes to let class out early. He goes over the review in class so you know exactly what to study!
Aw I'm going to miss Prof. Byers he's so awesome! Sometimes the material got really boring for me (PSCI major) since I needed one last lab science and thought it'd be the easiest one. WRONG! Its not a blow off class, Byers does make you work for your grade! But he is really helpful and funny!
Loved this class and Byers, but his tests are NO JOKE. Study your butt off. Seriously. I took this thinking it would be an easy A. I was wrong.
This professor is incredibly knowledgeable about the material, he is very entertaining, has a great sense of humor. The tests are easy enough as long as you take notes and pay attention. I would recommend this course to anyone. I've thoroughly enjoyed this class and am going to miss it when the semester ends.
Takes attendance at random (not often). Very funny guy, very knowledgeable, though lectures can be a little boring. Exams directly from study guides, extremely approachable after class or during office hours. Great guy overall. If you get him for MWF, F classes will only meet about 50% of the time (announced on W) as he prefers 2 day/wk format.
I was thinking this class would be an easy A, especially when he said the test are right of the review, but that is NOT the case. His lectures are boring but the information will be on the test. The tests will lower your grade but the lab helps
Johnny is definitly a good teacher. The only problem I have really is the fact for the first test that was literally all but 5 questions on the test that he just gave us the answers for. However someone complained about not getting it I guess so he told us he will not be doing that again cuz of one person and or the 2nd test the review helped none.
He's a GREAT TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a "college science" class this has to be the easier class
Great teacher! Definitely knows his stuff. Lectures are boring but he takes attendance randomly and it does count, so GO! He hands out a lot of extra credit. If you actually do your work, you'll pass.
The class is a lot of fun and the prof is really funny. It is a really hard class but enjoyable and a little easier if you enjoy Archaeology. It is a better alternative to a lab science than chem, phys, or bio if you are not a science/math person (we only did a small amount of standard deviation in lab (only 1 or 2 labs i think) but none in lect.
Johnny Byers is great. He's very knowledgeable and quite witty. The material is hard, but if you study, you shouldn't have an issue. Also, make sure you don't screw up in lab. That's what saved me.
He may not be the best teacher, but I was able to make up a test that was taken two weeks prior.
He is a pretty cool guy but the class is difficult. The first test is crazy easy and the rest are hard. The redeeming thing is that 10% of your grade is attendance, so if you go to class you can make a letter grade higher. Always lets out class early.
I loved this class, one of my favorite I have ever taken. Johnny is incredibly knowledgable and has a lot of personal experience. Of course this isn't a blow off class- it is archaeology for heaven's sake. We are talking about the discoveries of humans over millions of years! Tests were hard if you didn't pay attention and use your brain. :)
Loved his class. He is a very funny professor. His tests are pretty easy, but he is never clear about the reviews or anything in general. Take this class!
He is rude and his lectures make no sense. He makes up relationships between fossils that don't exist, trying to simplify things but only making them incredibly complicated. Doesn't go by the textbook, is patriarchal & ethnocentric. Not worth it.
Rude professor when students ask questions he makes fun of them. WAY to in to himself. He will have us study more in depth the archaeological sites that he has worked on than ones that have even more important finds. Gives a horrible review before the test, hardly uses the textbook, he refuses to post slides online, hard tests, no extra credit.
He seems cool on the first day of class. First test is identical to review. Other tests come from lecture but he doesn't post slides on BB and barely uses the book. When you ask questions he answers it extremely long and complicated answers as he dances around the question. Lectures go off in unrelated tangents. Very frustrating class. Study hard.
He is extremely unclear in lecture. The test material does not reflect what he teaches, nor does the majority of the review he hands out. I would not recommend taking this professor. He isn't helpful and fails to answer students' questions.
He seems nice at first and I'm sure he's a nice guy, but his lectures are extremely confusing. He doesn't link topics, he doesn't stay on topic, he isn't clear at all. I only found out while reviewing for the exam that (what I thought) were two topics was actually one and the same, just with different names. Do not take this professor!
Really great guy, however he never used blackboard which mean no slides posted. If you go to class everyday, and take notes as he goes along you can fill out the study guide for test easily. He finds fun ways to remember hard stuff which can be helpful. I would suggest to take him.
Loved him! He's sarcastic without being mean, has a hilariously morbid sense of humor. I scored an A without even touching the textbook. You have to show up and pay INTENSE attention to his lectures (they're funny.) What he repeats/focuses on is what he'll probably test over. The reviews are difficult, so show up early and sit close. Study groups!
Lectures can seem long but he's a pretty funny guy. His tests are just like the reviews despite what other people say. He goes over the review before the test and GIVES you ALL the answers so there's really no excuse to fail.
Very, very confusing professor. Does not use the book, PowerPoints are confusing, goes too fast to write a lot of things down, but most of all he is NOT clear about anything. He does not list topics, categories, etc. you have to piece everything together. Do NOT take him.
Really intelligent and funny professor, he makes the class enjoyable and the topics interesting. However, it's hard to know what will actually be on the test even if you attend the classes. He's helpful when need be but it's a difficult class no doubt.
Overall this Johnny was a great teacher. However, sometimes he trails off in a tangent to try and explain something to better help his students understand but it backfires on him, because it doesn't always clarify his main point.
I got a B- in the class and it was my fault. The guy literally GIVES you all of the answers to the review. They are also online, search "archaeology exam 1 review unt".. Attendance is 10% of the grade. Takes 3 out of the best 4 test grades. Final is not cumulative.
He is an easy teacher. Gives a review which is exactly the test. He does take attendance, so just go to class. Power points give you the answers to the review tests. Easy to make an A with some effort. Highly recommend.
Johnny is a real nice guy. If you go to class every day and pay attention, you can see how things are connected so tests don't seem so daunting. He gives a review but it's up to you to get the most out of it. No strenuous effort required to succeed in this class.
He is really cool and funny. His review is the same as the exams. Don't take this course during the regular semester unless you're actually interested in it, take it during summer its easy and quick and don't have to waste so much time on stupid rocks.
One of my favorite professors I have ever had. He is the bomb, tests are EXACTLY the review although he will throw in random bonus questions like "his favorite type of rock" at the end of the tests so pay attention during lectures. He lets you out of class early very often, no homework just tests. SO EASY, TAKE HIM! also don't buy the textbook
One of the most straightforward lecture classes you could hope for. If you show up, and take the notes, you are almost guaranteed to get a good grade. He gives a review sheet with allalmost all the test questions on it as well. Lectures aren't boring either and he can crack a pretty awesome joke at times. Easy A and interesting class!
I LOVED JOHNNY. He can be sassyrude (only to the immature people in class who deserve it), but funny and interesting. Knows his stuff. Gives you every chance to succeed. Reviews match tests. Takes attendance for 10% of grade. EC opportunities galore. If you fail, it's not his fault! He's a great teacher!
Super nice, but can be rude to students he doesn't like. If you go to class you get extra credit on tests. Tests are straight from the review. Uses power points for lecture. Easy A if you try.
Johnny's lectures are fairly simple but you HAVE to pay attention. His test reviews aren't very helpful and often include information he won't test you over and excludes important things from exams. If you skip class you will have a really hard time passing the exams. He doesn't use Blackboard at all.
This guy makes it clear that he doesn't want to teach and he couldn't care less about how well his student do. He covers material very quickly, tries to add humor but fails, and often lets class out upwards of 30 minutes early. He also refuses to use Blackboard and there's usually a big incongruity between his test reviews and exams.
Okay, everyone told me to take this class because it was an "easy science", but I really don't know why they said that because geology is not very easy. It is a LOT of memorizing. However, if you go to class and take good notes and then study the review, you will be okay. Byers is, like, okay. Not spectacular. textbook not required but could help!
He doesn't use BB so all info must be taken from class. He's funny but he has a dry/sarcastic humor so if you like that then you will find him amusing. Test reviews kind of cover the test material. You MUST focus on the dates and timelines. This isn't the hardest but you HAVE to study a lot to do well. Attendance is a grade.
Professor Byers (or "Johnny") is a hilarious and intelligent lecturer- He's really interested in the material and teaching what he knows to his students. He let's class out 30 minutes early most days, but make sure you don't miss class, because tou'll miss a lot of notes. He puts nothing online. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO LAB.
This professor was absolutely horrible. The lectures are pointless you and basically sit in class with your headphones and write what he puts on the powerpoint. He has no relevant information towards the exams. The reviews he provides are also useless and do not help with the exams either. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Johnny Byers was my favorite professor this semester. He has a handful of jokes he tells in every lecture and their dry manner and execution had a charm that always made me laugh. Reviews and tests are very similar. Stay to the end of every class, especially on review days. He'll give out extra credit. Dont buy the textbook, you won't need it.
Professor Byers, he's definitely a silly guy, always has funny stories on the side to tell. He loves his area of study, knows plenty of it and seems very inspired by it. His lectures are easy, answers questions when needed, and is just a very laid back person. Would take again!
Amazing professor, took him my first semester of my freshman year and I passed with an A. But you have to work for it. The lab is 30% of final grade. So don't slack off. And 10% is attendance. 60% is the tests taken in class.
The exams are completely ridiculous and his teaching style is quite cringe-worthy. This course feels like a high school course and the ARCH department could find a much better prof for this position.
Only gives tests. Tests are okay because he gives you reviews. I missed a lot because I was sick frequently and I still passed the class with a B. If you want to pay attention to his lectures you can, but all you really need is the review. You don't need a textbook. Take it if you need a required science. It's pretty easy.
The class itself is pretty boring, it's rocks. The tests aren't extremely difficult but you definitely have to study, not an easy A. Johnny is pretty funny and he always lets class out early. He gives out reviews for the tests, so be sure to get your hands on one, they're a lifesaver.
LOVED his class! He was very relaxed and old school, take note from the powerpoints and you'll be solid for tests!
Johnny is very funny and wants the best for all of his students. If you don't show up to lecture or lab, don't expect to pass this class. The textbook isn't necessary and the department provides you with the lab material. Johnny curves by attendance and doesn't make you take the final if you're happy with your first three tests! Easy and fun class.
Prof. Byers is a funny dude and like he says, "Bubba don't do blackboard." Attendance isn't required but it is taken every class and how much extra credit you get depends on how often you show up. Class is easily passable if you study for your tests which I didn't do, but the extra credit saved me big time.
Only 4 tests and attendance, no extra credit offered. Lectures are interesting and enjoyable. If you struggle go to office hours and he will help you understand. He really cares, and is super easy going.
Johnny was an okay professor. His lecture was based off of PowerPoints. He doesn't use Blackboard, so grades and PowerPoints are inaccessible. He provides reviews for the exams and goes over it. His tests are pretty straightforward and from the review. He takes attendance and uses it as extra points on the test. His tests are all multiple choice.
Definitely go to class. He gives reviews a week before the exams but in my opinion, didn't help very much. I skipped a lot so didn't know much material but I showed up when he went over the review answers. The exams are MUCH more complex than the reviews. He is a heavy lecturer, which is boring most of the time but has hilarious moments.
I took this ARCH because a lot of other science classes were filled up and honestly I was not a fan of the class at all. However, Johnny is a great man and he is probably one of the best professors I've had so far at UNT.
Great guy really funny. Don't miss class or you will fail. Gives extra credit before every exam. Don't bother looking up his test review answers online, you'll get all the wrong answers. Definitely go to his review session the day before exams. Show up and you should have no trouble getting an A or B. Tests are 100% based on lectures so take notes
Pretty average class content-wise. His PowerPoints are very dry and a little scattered, so you actually need to listen to what he says. I didn't use the book whatsoever, so don't waste your money. Attendance is a whole letter grade, but he picks random days. The test reviews are short, sweet, and super helpful.
4 tests + lab. Loves to hear himself talk but doesn't talk about the right stuff. Will ramble on about meaningless stories and skips over valuable (and testable!!!!) information and expects you to know it. Doesn't use any technology. My biggest mistake was not getting the textbook to teach myself because he is an awful lecturer. He's mildly funny.
DONT BE FOOLED! This class is NOT easy! The lectures are so bare, so the tests are hard b/c it's over things you dont even know or things he said once. Some things on the review are left out, and not everything on it will be tested. I got an A b/c the lab grade was curved 10 pts. I wouldnt recommend b/c you dont know your grade unless you ask him.
Johnny is the man. It doesn't take much to pass the class - just show up to the review class before the test and you'll be solid. He makes lots of dad-jokes. He's very sassy to his students. There is no homework, just four tests that are exactly the same as the ones he's given in previous years. Quizlet is your friend here.
Hes such a nice guy! His exams are lecture based and require understanding of the material, not just concepts. He offers extra credit but you have to attend class and the review days to get it. You dont need the book.
He doesnt use blackboard, textbooks, and his tests are hard. Lectures are boring but hes talking about rocks soo... You get notes *from class*, THATS IT. HOWEVER, review day is always right before the test. Whether he actually gives you the answers to the review is the real question. A's are doable. Show up and study hard.
Super funny and caring, always keeps the class engaged with side stories. He cares about his students and keeps the course super straight forward. One of my favorite professors so far!
Doesn't use Blackboard, post powerpoints or grades, and doesn't let you take pictures of the notes. I didn't know my grade the whole semester. He's boring and talks about rocks in a complex way people that don't know/care about rocks struggle with. Class always felt like a waster of time. Good guy, not so good professor.
Favorite prof EVER - I absolutely love Byers. He cares so much about what he teaches and unless you're disrespectful he really does care about his students. Doesn't use blackboard but since the only grades are exams its super easy to keep track of your grade. Good reviews right before exams. Show up, you'll do fine.
Johnny is really funny and a good lecturer that makes it interesting enough that it isn't hard to pay attention. The tests aren't exactly easy but they aren't too difficult either.
Johnny is great! Show up for lectures and you'll do just fine. He goes over the reviews a day before exam, question for question. I never read the book, made an A. If you have a hard time with this class you should quit school.
The lectures were entertaining!
He's a great guy, but not the best teacher. He clearly would rather be out in the field looking for fossils that teaching a bunch of kids who are just trying to fulfill their science credit. He tells a lot of personal stories in class (which are hilarious), goes through powerpoints way too fast, and tells you to call him Johny.
I LOVE Johnny, had to take this class for credit but I couldn't be happier that I got Johnny as my professor. I loved him so much! Not online at all, if you don't go to class you will not pass. Very knowledgeable and he likes if you sit in the front.
Class is only graded by lab, 4 tests, and attendance. He goes over review word for word the day before test, but it helps to take notes during lecture as well. Often tells stories and will go too in depth science-wise while lecturing, but easy to ignore it. His tests are fairly easy if you study and he gives EC for filling out the scantron right.
He's disrespectful, and doesn't care if you learn or not. If you ask questions be prepared to be treated like you're an idiot that doesn't pay attention. His lectures are boring, sometimes he can be funny but he definitely has some ego issues. He acts like he doesn't want to be there and it makes it really hard to learn from him.
He is a great guy. His course is lecture heavy and although those lectures can get boring, his jokes and stories make up for it. 4 tests in the semester is all you get graded on in his class. Show up or else you won't pass. The lab to this is harder than the actual class.
Johnny is super hilarious. The key to a good grade in this class is to show up to review and show up to lab. He doesnt teach from the book so dont get it. This man really loves his rocks.
Good beginner's course. Had four tests spaced over the semester. Readings from the book are somewhat helpful but not completely necessary if you pay attention during lectures. Most test questions come from lectures, so go to class.
Dude loves to teach, and as long as you aren't a complete jackass you will get a good grade and enjoy your time in his class. I took his geology intro and it was probably one of my favorite classes to date. He tests from the material he lectures on and he is just fun to listen to. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you show up you will do better
Go to the lab it is a easy grade. The lab and showing up was forty percent. Try your best.
This professor was great! He was very funny and he actually cares about his students passing. He gives 4 tests, attendance, and lab for his grading. I thought it was going to be difficult to pass but I have a B in his class. Do the reviews, they're exactly like the test, make sure you get them done before review day so you can ask questions!
I enjoyed this class for the most part, but there arent a lot of grades so its difficult to get an A. You only have 4 tests and thats pretty much all of your grade besides the lab. The professor is really funny (sometimes he can be boring), but its just the class that kind of stinks. You have to be willing to study for the tests.
Really funny guy and passionate about his rocks. While the lab is 30% and attendance is 10%, there are 4 Exams that make up 60% of your overall grade. Doesn't post anything online so you have to go to class and take notes if you want the material. Exams based solely on his powerpoints, so don't even bother buying the textbook. Tells funny stories
