Tough Course, but Johnny (his first name) made it much better. His tests are difficult, but his lectures are great.
Genetics is not easy, but this instructor is was very helpful! He was even willing to assist students in understanding the material during his LUNCH BREAK! How many other instructors would do that? Zero.

This was an honors class. Awesome professor!
He was so real and respectful of his course that you wanted to learn it. Yes his classes are somewhat hard but they are worth taking.
I really liked the format of his class, but be careful because his tests are tricky. A great professor who is courteous in and out of class.
Tests were not difficult if you study the material in the powerpoint/lecture notes. Teacher is great with helping students!
Incredibly interesting lectures. Hard exams. I would take Johnny again in a heart beat. He is so good natured.
He kept the class interesting. As long as you study the notes regularly, the tests aren't hard at all. I'd love to take another class taught by this professor.
He made the class extremely interesting even though the material was sometimes difficult. You will have to work hard for an "A" but you'll get a lot out of it.
great teacher, very helpful and funny
he is extremely nice and very helpful in and out of class. i like he he gives ur notes on powerpoint. the only catch is hes exams are pretty hard, even if u study for them. the class avg for us was a 'C' but he is really awesome as a person and professor
I have taken several classes taught by Johnny. His classes make the USF Bio Dept worthwile. Truly nice man who expects his students to earn good grades, does not hand them out to people who do not work for them.
El-Rady was a cool guy. He puts practice tests up online and always takes questions from those test for the real one. Very helpful. A project is due at the end of the semester, its power point, very very easy. Must study to get good grades on the tests.
the class is totally boring. El- Rady teaches using powerpoint and u fill in the blanks on the notes he prepares. the class is about genetics and not sex!
Awesome teacher. He knows what he is talking about and very clear on what he wants out of us. Kept the discussion going. Highly recommended if you like micro. If you're not into micro, you may have to put in some effort.
This class can be very simple so long as you actually go to class and fill in the notes which he supplies. The class is not about sex it is about genetics, can be intesting. Not hard but you MUST go to class or else!1
excellent teacher- put notes up on powerpoint and had practice exams online before each exam. not always the most interesting stuff to learn about, but he tries his best to keep our interests. exams aren't too bad if you just study the notes a lot!
very good teacher. he is always respectful to all the students and really knows what he is talking about.
Wow this guy is nice, funny and very clear! i plan to take him for as many of my bio classes as possible!
I have taken El-Rady twice (micro and genetics) and I think he is a great teacher who is always willing to help students be successful as long as they put forth the effort. He isn't easy...you have to work for a good grade, but he is very down to earth and helpful.
Very easy class. Used clicker system to moniter attendence and class participation, it helped a lot with memorizing the material and learning how to do problems. He makes boring concepts interesting with examples, great professor overall. Would definitely take again.
Tests are more difficult than lectures would make it seem, be sure to know seemingly unimportant details. Questions could be confusing, but you can do well if you study the material well. Very good professor though.
Dr. El Rady was my favorite professor during my four years at USF. He went out of his way to help you if you asked. His tests were difficult but he instilled a good work ethic in his students that made you want to work hard. There should be more professor teaching like he does. He sets the bar very high.
Even though this class didn't study what i thought, I couldnt have asked for a better teacher. He does anything in his power to make sure he explains concepts clearly, and will not let you fall behind if you need help. Made everything easy for me to understand considering my poor background in biology. I reccomend taking a class with him.
A truely brilliant teacher, one of the best i have had at USF. While his tests a very difficult he makes you want to work hard to earn your grade, despite the fact i only got a C+ in this class i feel that i have learned more about genetics than i have of any subject i have taken so far, take this man if you really want to learn something.
Great teacher! Tests from notes, little bit of reading assignments.
Great class. Dr. El-rady is a wonderful techer and really makes genetics interesting. His tests are very hard, but he does review sessions and there aren't any surprises in them. HIs way of grading is nice too
Tests are hard, but he provides SOO MANY USEFUL resources-old & practice tests, review sessions... By test day, u've seen many of the ?'s if u use these sources. No surprises...he doesn't waste ur time with questions that won't help u on the test. A dedicated, compassionate teacher! Not necessarily easy, but I still recommend him.
Tests really aren't hard, as long as you don't just study the night before you will do good. He gives chances for extra credit points. nice guy! Really makes the class interesting!
Was an awesome teacher- made genetics very easy- and was quite comical...just try to get a recitation section with him- his TA isn't very helpful
he is a great teacher, he explains the material in different ways so you can understand it.
NEEDS MORE PRACTICE IN EDUCATION.
Good teacher, but somtimes hard to understand. He explains topics well. You have to know a lot of detail for his tests in order to complete the essays, crossword, and true/correct the false statements sections. He's definitely fair and easy going though, so that's a big plus. See him in his office hours for questions.
He was a great teacher as long as you did what you were supposed to do. He uses clickers and it was good so that he knew what he needed to reteach. He's not easy, but he's very fair and you'll get the grade that you deserve.
Dr. El-Rady is a great professor. The class isn't a super easy class, of course not- this is microbiology. You don't even have to read the book, except for extra clarity- just follow his notes, and study well- and you will get an A.
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHER THIS UNIVERSITY HAS TO OFFER....He makes the most boring subjects seem absolutely interesting. Study his notes and you will be fine! Also, he is a very easy going professor, he is easy to talk to and very responsive. Plus he writes the best letter of recommendations, so please get to know him and do well in his class!
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!. very approchable and funny guy. he makes the lecture very interesting by doing class participation questions and power point presentations. he takes time out of his own schedule to provide review sections for the exams. he's test are not hard as long as you do the assign homework. i definitively recommend him!!!!
Wonderful prof. Always willing to help and has a GREAT sense of humor. However, Genetics is TOUGH and tests are extremely difficult. This class is definately NOT for the lazy.
Great professor. He makes the topic easy and fun.
BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!!! I had Dr. El-Rady for 3 classes. I learned so much from him. His style of teaching, personality, and knowledge are impeccable. I highly recommend him!
Group projects in a Biology class?? Are you KIDDING me??? This was the #1 thing which pissed me off about this class. I loved the clicker quizzes, I loved his teaching style, but I HATED the group projects! There's no point in such a thing in a college biology course! It's a waste of time and is just one more extra useless thing that I have to do.
Decent class; good professor 'cause he is very HELPFUL, nice, very easy to talk to - sometimes it sounds like he is yelling but I don't think he means to do it. Tests are easy if you study the old exams and understand ALL his notes. Clickers and group projects = easy points. And his way of grading is cool - the lower test score counts less and etc.
Great teacher! A funny and interesting teacher. He has participation points, quizes, and a group project which is awesome. One of my favorites since being at USF.
Awsome prof, really nice guy, will take the time to explain things to students when asked. The only bad thing about this class are the damned group projects, which were a supreme waste of time, and I precisely learned NOTHING. They are maddening because he wants you to "explain" the answers. Dude, how do you "explain" a Punnett Square? Exactly.
Great teacher! Very helpful and easy to approach. Tests are a bit tricky, but if you study everything in his notes in detail, then you will do fine. His grading is also very fair, and he curves when necessary.
If you are a pre-med and want to learn El-Rady is the way to go. Best teacher at USF so far. Very good, punctual and fair. The only thing to look out for is to understand what he is asking for. I got C in the 1st exam until I learned his testing style and then got As. Still made an A in the class.
Group projects are a waste of time, especially in an upper-level science course. The clickers are a good idea, and it helped my grade. He's all right I guess; I don't know why people are going nuts for him....
Very good teacher! Very helpful and easy to approach. Tests can be difficult, so study everything in his notes in detail. Crosswords , Jepardy, and quizes are VERY helpful for tests. He curves the grades when necessary.
El-Rady is my FAVORITE professor. He really knows his stuff and he makes it very interesting for the students. I LOVE the clicker points. The project was annoying, but helped my grade. He is also VERY fair. If he sees the whole class did poorly on the test, he'll boost everyone's grade by a few points.
Great teacher. Really cares about his students. The tests are still hard though.
He is okay, but his exams are hard and tricky. What I hate the most about him is that he ignores that students are taking other courses, he gives more work than necessary. Five group projects is definitely a waste of time.
Dr. El-Rady is the best professor i have ever had. he cares so much about his students, and it really shows. He usually curves the class to around a 70%. Take down his clicker questions, do all of his quizzes online and MEMORIZE his notes. His tests are tricky, but manageable. I got an A+ in the class. TAKE HIM! He's the best USF has!
I'm not sure why everyone loves El-rady. HE is fair and he's funny but his tests are tricky and the group projects are a complete waste of time. The last two are juat busy work' which I don't expect in an upper level college class. The clicker points were the main thing to help my grade. The final sucked...cummulative.
Very hard class. Teacher is really nice; however, tests are hard. Group projects (5 total) are a waste of time and interfere with studying.
He expects alot out of you, but he actually teaches, not just reads the book or slides. He uses many different methods, and there is more to the grade than just tests. He's very available, and doesn't mind being asked to explain anything. He one of the best teachers I've had.
Dr El-Rady is the best professor at USF. if you are planning to continue your education in anything related to biology or medicine TAKE HIM. you will learn alot. he cares about his students and is always willing to help. write down all clicker questions! they will help on test! test are easy as long as you do the homework
Ok guy but... you will need to study very hard.
He is really helpful but tests are tricky..... ALL OF THE ABOVE... TWO OF THE ABOVE... NONE OF THE ABOVE??? pretty much all the questions are like that and that confuses
I am currently enrolled in Genetics with El-Rady, and it is a great class! He makes it very interesting. Practice quizzes are extremely helpful. Tests are challenging and make you think, but very do-able if you study (I've gotten two 100's so far). He's just a really fun guy, and always willing to help his students out.
Very passionate professor that expects a lot out of his students. Attendance is imporant as there is a quiz every day to apply what he's taught you previously. Study hard and do the quizzes he gives out and homework as he gets kinda tricky on the exam questions.
Rady really isnt anything special. He likes to schedule advising appointments during his office hours, many times I have not been able to speak with him. He canceled a required review session and thinks its fine if he makes a random time two days before the exam to do review. I guess he assumes everyone is free. Inappropriate!
One of the best I've had! He is very genuine and really cares about his students. Very knowledgable on the subject, and explains the material in multiple dif ways to suit dif learning styles. PPT are posted, as are the notes with filled in blanks (he wants you to pay attn in class, not focus on writing.) Clicker quizzes everyday and group assn req.
El-Rady is a "fake" professor. He tries so make himself look like a fun guy and different from usual professors. However, his exams are not easy and he crams alot of stuff in. If he wants to make himself appear cool to the students, he should make the exams easier. To me he is just trying to be something he is not.
He is an OK teacher. He explains but jumps from subject to subject quite often making it hard to keep up and understand. Tests are difficult with tricky questions. However, if you go to class and study VERY hard you can still get an A or a B.
El Rady is an okay guy but what i dont like is he tries to trick you. his questions on the test are not straight forward and it almost seems like he wants you to fail. I had to devote soo much time studying for his exams and a only made a c in the course. clicker points and group projects helped my grade alot. I recommend taking schmidt.
He's a great teacher. He actually teaches the subject well and makes you learn all the things that you need to know. You do have to study a lot for his exams, but it is college after all. One of the most imformative teachers. I would highly recommend him.
Genetics is definetly not an easy class. The exams are tricky but doable. The clicker questions are annoying because they require you to know the material every lecture. The group projects are a waste of time for a college level course. El-rady is a nice guy, he talks fast but answers any questions. Definetly not your average biology class.
He is a cool guy who knows his stuff. He is also makes hard exames. I had him two years ago for gen micro and genetics, some of my hardes and best classes in college. Talk to him, he really gets to know his students, even years later. Oh, clickers are cool if you study as you go.
Very good teacher. Knows what he is doing & is genuinely concerned about making sure students get the material. He does use clickers for attendance and also to ask questions that ARE PART OF UR GRADE, NOT EXTRA CREDIT so make sure you study before coming to each class. There's also a group proj. Start early on that one and you'll be fine.
Dr.El-Rady is not an easy professor. He class is really hard. I devoted so much time for this class and barely passed. His tests are so tricky that it will drive you crazy. Be sure you re preapred for this classd or else you will fail. Start studying early because you will need it. His tests are mostly calculations so that will really screw you ove
Amazing teacher and a really fun class. You really dont need the book because his powerpoint notes and practice quizzes really are all you need to pull info from. You do have to go to class... he uses the clickers and he also has really fun group projects!
great guy. you learn a lot in class. his tests are little tough but if you study his notes and know them well, you will be fine. just study all semester long.
Great Prof, Study his notes he gives, tests come from there. Class was minimal studying, study groups helped. Get a good group for group prjts grades very liberally on group projects so dont stress it. He loves the subject he teaches, and makes lectures so interesting, his grading scale tries to give students the best grade possiable, got an A-
Dr. El-Rady is by far the best science professor at USF. He made genetics as well as microbio interesting and fun to learn. He gives you powerpoints and study notes to fill in during class, which he draws all his test questions from. He also goes out of his way to help and even gives exam review sessions. The key to doing well is going to class.
Tests aren't always easy, but they are definitely fair. He posts practice quizzes for each unit on Blackboard - do all the practice quizzes and read the notes thoroughly, and you should do fine! We also did a "class project" that involved making an entire movie: check it out at http://youtube.com/watch?v=eOqFlynf8JA
He is a great teacher and is very helpful in office hours esp for the test. Tests are tricky. He cares about his students. Be careful in class tho becuase he watchs for cheaters. Even if you have all your work shown once he is on ur back, u will get a FF. 1/10 or more of the class gets accused....
I think Dr. El-Rady is not tricky at all. Just look over the notes and do the practice quizzes and you?ll be fine for the exams. I easily got high A?s on his exams with little study. You must come to class because you earn points for clicker attendance. With the way his points system is set up, he DOES try to give you the best grade possible.
Dr. El-Rady is awesome! You'll need to study hard, but if you attend class and crack open the book you will learn everything you need to know and will leave with a good grade.
He knows what he's doing. Good guy, just sometimes hard to understand. I never really talked with him personally, but the class was ok if you like bio. It's a class for non-majors, but it sure doesn't feel like one.
Worst Teacher Ever. I will never take another class with him again. Harps on useless details and makes class needlessly complicated by doing so. He's a huge herd who thinks microbiology is so interesting, he's turned me off to the subject. He's boring, and has an accent. Lecturers directly from notes and then compiles test from notes; lazy.
Not useful as a teacher. Makes exams needlessly difficult and harps on details that aren't critical to material understanding. Clearly gets a kick out of microbio but class killed my interest in the subject. I will never take another class of his again due to his boring lectures and awful teaching style.
Even if you completely dread biology, Professor El-Rady will find a way to get through. He also has a wonderful character and is very approachable.
Funny guy. Likes what he does. Class for non-majors, but was really difficult for being that. TA was nice and helpful. Tests are of average difficulty, but the concepts are rather abstract/dont flow together well. Most of what i learned is useless for my major, so I'm not too sure why i had to take it. But he curves, and is lenient. Nice person.
He is a really nice guy and pretty funny too but he was not general at all. Every chapter consisted of over 50 powerpoint slides and the whole semester we only went over 13 chapters. I think he should have been much more general as this is only a general ed class.
He is not a easy teacher, but he is extremly fair and willing to help his students any way he can. He even came to a study session at school at 10 pm on his own time to help us study for the final
Easy class. Disregard those who claim the tests where hard. He gives you all the information to pass his tests plus he curves every test by at least 3 points. USF has too many lazy students. No wonder why graduation rates are low. Attend class and TA sessions for a good grade. A little effort will earn you a B+
I have had this professor for 3 different classes and there's definitely a reason I keep taking him...he's a fantastic professor. His tests may focus on details, but he gives you all the information you need ahead of time and even gives you extra points to help your grade. He goes out of his way to do everything possible to benefit his students. =)
I am very picky about professors and most of professors at bio and chem dept at usf suck, but I could not find anything wrong with this guy. He's actually quite interesting I got an A in his micro class.
he teaches well, but his tests are ridiculously hard.He does the a-one thing b-another thing c-both d- neither which totally screws up your thinking process. very hard teacher..doesn't curve tests...you need to put in like 40 hours a week to do well...
He is a good professor in that he cares a lot about his subject and students - but he zooms through the material at a VERY fast pace. His tests focus on minute details and he provides you with A LOT of information. Be prepared to put in a lot of study time, attend all classes, and be glued to your textbook.
By far the BEST prof. I have had at USF. Extremely interesting and detailed lectures. He is Brilliant and funny. If you like Biology you will enjoy his classes. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE his exams, they are full of extreme detail..but ultimately YOU earn your grades, he is totally fair.
It is obvious that he is passionate about his subject and tries to get students insterested in it as well. His exams are crazy hard and test on the most minute details and not an understanding of the material. In retrospect I wish I would have taken a different professor.
El-Rady is excellent, but like everybody on here says, his tests are VERY difficult. Best advice to succeed: make flash cards of his notes, take his online quizzes (some are test q's), review online flash cards on the book's website, make flow charts of the material and link everything together, attend class (clicker pts), study MEET session notes
He is a great teacher. His tests are not tricky, just very comprehensive. If you study, you will find then very easy. If you don't, you will not guess your way out. Group and personal projects help to buffer grade, hassle for those who don't need it.
Micro is the hardest upperlevel Bio class in BMS major, no doubt. But he is an amazing professor and his exams are completely fair. He makes you know everything, but you wouldn't understand anything if he didn't make you know the details. REALLY GREAT PROF!
Awesome teacher. Teaches so well in class that minimal study is needed. Tests can have tricky questions but he posts a ton of practice questions so you don't get caught off guard. Loves teaching, puts a lot of work into it. Fun to listen to and easy to understand.
Amazing teacher. You get most concepts first time around because he explains them so well. Tons and tons of practice quizzes. Know why you picked the answer and why the other ones were not the answer and you will get an A. Didn't open the book once. Studied straight from the notes, his lectures, and quizzes.
El-Rady is freakin awesome at lecturing and hott mustache& tests come mainly from the notes and practice questions done in the lecture and review and very helpful because he gives you practice exams to study for his tests and they are the exactly the same except for different numbers or such. But overll awesome teacher except making a group project
This was the best professor I have ever had. Do not listen to people saying that his exams are crazy hard. I never cracked the book and basically just memorized his powerpoint slides, and I got A's on every test. Definitely take him over Vandenbergh.
The BEST biology instructor at USF! Take him if you can - it is rewarding. Enthusiastic, kind of goofy, and helpful. You must study! Exams aren't made to fail you, but they are challenging - might seem tricky but everything on them was covered and he provides numerous ways to prepare for the exams (jeopardy, crosswords, review sessions..) THE BEST!
BEWARE!!! This is a professor who believes you are only taking his class and your life revolves around it. The homework is tedious and has nothing to do with the subjects. Tests are very difficult and he gives you some 200 terms and definitions you must know in a week for 50 question tests. I regretted taking this course for the ENTIRE semester.
This class requires far more work that any other 1000 level you will take. Three assignments and 1 quiz every week + 2 comprehensive exams. I spent 10-12 hrs/week on the work for this class each week. Prof. is VERY helpful and works with you IF you talk to him. Take the practice quizzes online over and over to prepare for the quizzes and exams!
quite a bit of writing but very light hearted he is a sweet man and wants to help students learn great if you like the topic..highly recommend. fun project at the end i got an A
Good professor. Can make tests harder than would otherwise be necessary, but you will be well-prepared for other courses building on genetics. Cares about students and explains things very well. I would definitely recommend him for those who will need his course for their major.
He is a nice guy and pretty funny. But he makes his tests much harder than they need to be. You really need to know the material for his tests.
He is extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and funny. He keeps you interested in his class, and when you get close to exams he makes extra office hours so he can help as much as possible. I didn't use the textbook once the entire time, there is no need. He can be tricky in tests, but it makes you very well prepared for exams. I got an A.
He's a great teacher just make sure you study and you'll do fine!
He is an amazing teacher. I understood everything in that class. He makes class fun and interesting, I never skipped a day! You will learn a lot in his class. There are 4 exams, one is dropped. There is also a final. I hardly used the textbook. Go to class, take good notes. Exams are a bit tricky, but you should be fine if you study! I got an A :)
This guy has to be the best professor I have ever had at USF. He always makes time in his schedule to help out students and makes such dense concepts sound as if it were common sense. If you go to class everyday and do the practice quizzes the tests should be cake. I STRONGLY ADVISE SIGNING UP FOR HIS CLASS.
This class was tougher than my honors 4900 level classes due to the sheer volume of work. That said, he was extremely helpful when I met with him about my poor performance. Each week, there is a quiz (25pts), homework (25pts), reaction paper (10pts) and process of science (10pts) and 2 on campus exams. Extremely tough to take during summer!
Dr. El-Rady's teaching skill is beyond compare. He is quite funny and his lectures are exceptionally well designed. I was not a huge fan of genetics coming into the course, but he made it interesting and provided excellent notes to study from. Be sure to do the quizzes multiple times, understand the notes, and watch for tricks on the exams.
The man knows his stuff. He's been teaching genetics for 13 years and it shows. Tests are tricky and come straight from his powerpoints and practice quizzes. Don't buy the book unless you want the extra practice problems. He is very helpful, funny, and approachable. Definitely recommend!
Dr. El-Rady is one of the best professors I ever had. He loves teaching and is very helpful to his students. Kinda dorky but that's why we love him. Uses clickers in every class I took with him so attendance is important. He does read off the ppts but goes into more depth and has plenty of stories to keep you interested
I've been honored to have this man for genetics, pathogenic micro and medical mycology. You do have to study, you will cuss his existence from time-to-time, and you will learn more from him than most professors. He's a beautiful human that cares for his students, the world, and the future. He's the best professot at USF.
Very intense online class. Work takes a lot of time each week to do, so if you like to do meaningless work take this class. If you have better things to do take another class. Easy A but a lot of work!!!!!!! 4 things due each week.
such a great proff. He was so helpful and resourceful when in came to understanding the material. You can tell he genuinely wanted his students to succeed in his class!
Such a great professor, who genuinely wants to you to succeed in his class. His exams are fair, quizzes are easy you take the practice ones. Overall, I would definitely recommend anyone to take Bio of Humans online!
Really loved being a part of his Honors College class. Never really had in interest in microbiolgy before but he made it interesting and fun. Very upset that he will no longer be teaching at the Honors College but I am very appreciative that he truly wanted every student to succeed in the class
Great professor! he really knows what he's teaching and explains it in a way thats easy to understand. he gives practice quizzes which are extremely helpful and lets you drop a test!
AMAZING teacher. Enthusiastic about the material and the most helpful instructor I have ever had. Schedules multiple review sessions for every exam to accommodate student schedules as well as "meet and eat"s to discuss material at group dinners or lunches. He is extremely positive and makes the material fun to learn.
I thought this was a solid online class. The instructions in the syllabus are very straightforward, and this professor seems to have a passion for the subject and will help you if needed. It took me about 2-4 hours per week to finish the assignments. I would highly recommend this class.
One of my favorite professors at USF. He is very helpful and truly wants everybody to pass. He structures the grading so to fail you have to actually try to fail. His tests are very difficult and you need to study a lot for them. Be ready to work in his class, but he honestly makes it fun
Class is too much work for a 1000 level class. He is fine; explains his syllabus and offers the chance to drop a couple of your low quiz/ paper grades. IF you don't have a heavy workload, you could take this class and not die.
Quite a workload! I was very surprised at the amount of assignments I had to do BUT the positive thing is that the assignments are worth WAY MORE than the exams so if you do really bad on the exams but did all your assignments (some do get dropped as well) you will still pass by a long shot. I recommend it but just stay on top of the work!
Good online class, syllabus is straightforward. A few homework assignments due every week or two, easy but takes a few hours. a few can be dropped, easy extra credit available, 3 exams 1 drop easy and straight from his study guide. easy class if you can work on homework a couple hours a week and memorize a study guide
Took Bio of Humans online. He doesn't grade the work, the TA does so this could be good or bad. You have work due almost every week. You can find the quiz answers via a Google search. You also have 2 worksheet to do. 1 is kind of hard. Lots of grades get dropped. TONS of extra credit. 3 tests, 1 gets dropped. Fufills the life science FKL.
Great professor. Go to class and you'll do well
Easy work, but a lot of it. My TA was kind of a rough grader. if you can write fast & research well, should be pretty easy.
El-Rady is AMAZING. Def take him. He explains things so well! Exams are only a little bit tricky but honestly if you go to class you'll def get an A. He has amazing review sessions before each exam. He is honestly the best professor I've has in my three years at USF. Very willing to help and cares oh so much. You won't regret taking him, I promise!
This was an online summer class. There is a lot of weekly work...not hard...but time consuming. The extra credit project is worth 30 points and really helps your grade.
I had his online bio class. His lecture notes make it so that you don't need the textbook and he uploads the first 2 sections from the textbook so that you have time to get the textbook. you have 12 units, with each unit due about 10 days apart. 2 homework assignments, and a reflection paper per unit. 3 exams, lowest gets dropped. great professor!
This was an online class and although there is a lot of work to be done, he drops about 8 of the lowest assignments and the lowest exam. He is extremely helpful and keeps constant contact throughout the semester. Stay on top of the work and do the study guide and you're golden.
One of the best professors I have ever had. El-Rady cares about his students and is extremely knowledgable about genetics. Great professor and highly recommend him for this course.
Dr El Rady is a great teacher and a great person! He's very friendly and helpful, posting practice exams and outlines of material needed for the exam. Don't underestimate his class, though. He makes genetics very clear, but you need to study a lot before the exam. I spent more time on Orgo, but could have easily gotten an A had I put in more time.
Very sweet man! Makes every requirement crystal clear- even online as I took it. As a student with no interest in Bio, I found this course refreshingly simple. No doubt there is a lot of "busy work" but it just improves your grade in the end. Drops one exam and lots of assignments!
Summer C 2013--El-Rady's class was O.K. but waaaay too much weekly work for an online summer class. Instead of the normal course that only has papers and 2 or three quizzes, El-Rady had 4 assignments due EVERY WEEK. (Quiz, Summary, 2 HWs) Course material isn't hard but there are alot of subject material crammed into each of the 2 exams.
Dr. El-Rady was by far the best professor I have taken at USF. He makes lecture very clear and he is very helpful to his students.
I took him for Genetics summer C 2013... Hands down the BEST professor at USF! He's so helpful, he makes it very interesting, the man knows his stuff! All notes and power points are provided. You have to study to do well, but he provides practice quizzes that are just like the test! I can't give him enough praise, don't hesitate! Take El-Rady!!
I really enjoy the field of genetics but did not enjoy this class. El-Rady is a great guy and an A is totally attainable, but I learned nothing but math in this class. Learn his practice tests and the powerpoints and it's an easy A... if YOU put in the study effort. I got nothing from class and usually fell asleep. Current straight A student.
Great professor! There are several units, either consisting of 1-3 chapters. Each unit calls for a homework page (he asks questions and you type in answers), a Process of science page (you go to a link for a short video and write in answers), and a two page reflection paper (just write main points from the chapters). 3 exams, and one is dropped. :)
Even though it was an online course, he made it very easy. There were 11 units and he allowed at least 2 drop assignments of each type (most units had 3 assignments). There are 3 on-campus exams on Saturdays, but he gives you a complete study guide which he takes the questions from. Very easy!! If you email him a question, he responds quickly!
I decided to take Microbio this semester solely because El-Rady was teaching it. It's definitely a tough class with loads of material to memorize, but he is very clear in his expectations, and provides a ton of review material to help prepare you for each exam. Awesome prof, highly recommended but get ready to devote some time if you want an A.
I believe him to be the best professor at this university. Take him in any class you have the chance to.
GREAT professor. regardless what class it is, please take it with him. he really knows his stuff.
DO NOT TAKE BIOLOGY OF HUMANS! This professor seems kind and passionate but has tons of useless assignments. This is a 100 level course but gets into Chemistry and Molecular Biology. WHY????
Didn't like him much because all the class consisted of was math problems. He was a nice guy and his notes are a great study tool but BORING lectures. Again TO MUCH MATH. Didn't have to memorize syndromes and diseases. Would recommend to take statistics before genetics.
El-Rady was very enthusiastic about microbio, but does not know how to teach for non-Microbiology majors (since it was an honors class there were a lot of non-majors). I would recommend him if you are a microbio or biology major, but do not take his courses if you are not.
Great professor who actually cares/teaches. Does clickers and offers practice quizzes. Class isn't just memorization, it's a lot of basic math and formulas you apply to a word problem. Tests are all scantron, final is required. Very accommodating so the final wasn't from everything covered in class. Just study BEFORE doing the practice quizzes!
Dr. El Rady is a great professor who is interested in the course subject and genuinely cares about students. He makes the course interesting by adding outside facts and references to pop culture, and sometimes telling anecdotes about his own life. His tests are hard though, study the online quizzes. Even then, many questions are tricky.
El Rady is a great professor but this class is hard! He explains things really well but you need to study a lot to do well. There are small mandatory textbook reading assignments for each chapter. He uses clickers so go to class.
El-rady is a great professor! Don't buy textbook because his powerpoints cover material that will be on the test. Also do the practice quizzes that he posts because they will be additional supplement to study for the test. He does clicker questions for attendence and participation grade. You will actually learn and he is very helpful and very nice!
This guy is by far the best teacher I've had at USF. He really wants you to pass his class and provides Online Practice Quizzes, and Review Sessions which exam questions come from. Book is not required and he always asks "Please stop me if you don't understand." Cannot fail his class, there are clickers where test questions also come from. Good Guy
Very helpful and kind. He truly cares about his students and goes out of his way to make sure we succeed and understand the material. He drops the lowest grade in each category (hw, test, etc) so if you do all of the assignments you should be fine. The exams come DIRECTLY from the study guides, so you can even get away with just memorizing it.
Hardish class for a biological science mostly due to the fact that there is more math than usual. Read everything, study hard, do all the practice quizzes, drill a lot and you should be fine. You need a clicker but get it because it could be the difference between an A and a B
He is very nice & helpful. Offers an abundance of office hours. But you absolutely have to study & take the practice quizzes. If you do well on the practice quizzes you should be set for the exam. The book is not really needed, he posts all information needed in his powerpoints.
I enjoyed the teacher, he actually made genetics interesting since I didn't particularly enjoy it when I was taking Biology. When you study you are for sure to get an A. But just some advice study those powerpoints like crazy!
El-Rady is a nice guy but his lectures were boring and unclear. His powerpoint notes are vague, but referring to the textbook helps. Attendance is mandatory as clickers are a decent portion of your grade. Reading the notes before class helps.
This class was enjoyable, and he really helps to make subject matter clear. His office hours are great, and he has extra office hours/study sessions right before exams. His grading scale is curved, and he even curves your exams sometimes. Take advantage of those practice quizzes! But if you don't read the material, you will absolutely fail.
This is the best professor you will ever have! Get the clicker, do the notes, study a little before class, and take the quizzes multiple times to pass the class. He's super helpful during office hours.
Dr El-Rady is truly a great professor - he is able to connect all the material in such a way that gives you the chance to learn in class (via clicker questions), and his practice quizzes online are so wonderful - they really give you the chance to practice what you have studied. Dr E is extremely kind and so helpful during office hours. Take him!
Dr. El-Rady's class is easy if follow directions. He is very generous with grading, allowing for 2 lowest homeworks and quiz grades to be dropped. He gives a detailed outline of what is on each of 2 exams, and if you know it, you WILL do well. He has a good sense of humor, which is important in my opinion.
Best teacher I've had at USF, and there are some great ones there! He makes it very clear what you need to know. Provides PLENTY of materials to help you study and succeed in his class. Not an "easy" A, but if you pay attention, take notes, and study the slides/practice quizzes, his tests are a piece of cake :) I will be taking D-Bac. in the fall
Professor El-Rady is awesome. Relates biology and concepts that are normally boring to real life and you really learn from him. His lessons are fun. Not "easy A," but not hard to get an A either. Always there to answer questions or help. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Especially if you normally would hate bio!
Honestly, He is great professor, great personalty and really understanding. However DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE I say this because he assigns all this unnecessary homework, quizzes and assignments. Unless you know someone else taking the class and you guys split the work I would not do it online. Take this class in person with another professor
I took this class online. There is a lot of work to be done. Every week there is a quiz, homework, an assignment and a reflection paper which is required two pages. But if you do the work you will get an A. The exams are proctored, there are 3 and you can drop one. He also drops homeworks, assignments and quizes I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS
Dr EL-rady seems like a nice guy and maybe a great in class professor, but I repeat do not take this class online by yourself or if you have a hectic schedule. The unnecessary homework is ridiculously hard, time consuming, and there are so much of it . This truly hindered you from studying for his exams. Positive note, grading scale is generous.
Took him for determinative bacteriology and it was an enormous amount of material, but Dr. El Rady makes it manageable and very fair. Tests are mc, short answer, essay, fill in the blank, and tf that you must make correct if false. Very clear and straight forward from lecture notes. Tough tests but dbac should be tough. Great teacher!
I took Dr. El-Rady in the fall 2014 for Determinative Bacteriology. I was blown away by his sincere passion for teaching, his genuine concern for his students, and the efforts he put in to his lectures. As a senior who has been here all 4 yrs, he is by far, the best professor I have ever had at USF.
Dr. El-Rady was extremely helpful for genetics. He was very fair on grading and mostly concerned that students learned the material. His homework questions and tests could be challenging, but his class was structured so that getting an A was not too difficult if you try. He was very caring, and helpful over the semester.
He's an amazing professor but you'll actually have to try in his class if you want to pass.
Since this class is an online class, you have to put a lot of busy work into it. The TAs grade the homework sheets. If you and your friend have the same answers and they get a perfect score, you may not. The hardest part are the quizzes online, they aren't on the internet so take it with friends! Don't take a make up exam, its fill in the blank.
El Rady is the BEST professor at USF, hands down. Just finished my 3rd class with him (Gen. Genetics, DBac, Human Genetics) and would take more if I wasn't graduating. Intelligent and passionate about his subject, respectful and down to earth, can be challenging but he makes things interesting so you end up learning a ton. Great guy & professor!
Dr. El-Rady is an amazing professor and I'm happy that I had him for both general genetics and human genetics. His lecture style is always crystal clear and he was always kind to everyone. For human genetics, just make sure you go to class and review his power points before the exams.
Truly an amazing professor. Lectures are some of the best I've seen. This man knows his material. Not an easy course, but if you go to class and office hours, you will do fine. Although I got sick the last two weeks, turned in an incomplete project, and received a D+ in the class, I have to take the blame. Awesome instructor.
This online course was very demanding for a 10 week summer class. Homework and quizzes each week, 3 exams, no final, 1 semester homework. At first glance it doesn't seem demanding, but lectures are sometimes 6 hours for a single chapter. 2 chapters per module, 9 modules total. As I said, El-Rady is fair. Would take him again in person, not online.
The quizzes are a lot easier than the tests. Quizzes pull questions from the the 3 practice quizzes. The tests are a lot tougher so you want to study and utilize the study guides! Tests are on Saturdays at 11 am. Class isn't easy but you can find many resources online to help. Reflection papers due at the end of each unit so be prepared to write.
Dr. El-Rady is one of my favorite professors. Although it is not an easy A if you put in the work it is easily achievable. He give a drop test, a curve, and the lowest test other than the drop is only worth 10%. No homework or quizzes. Cickers are 20% of the grade. He always is willing to help and meet with students as well.
Tests are tough. He's a great professor and the class is entertaining. But I studied for days, went to office hours, and poured over his online quizzes and would still manage only a B. A lot of his test questions are SAT like format. I don't feel like my knowledge of genetics reflects my grade I received in his class. He's a great teacher though!
El-Rady is one of my favorite professor at USF. Although tests are tricky and tough, he will prepare you well. Do the practice quizzes and study the lecture slides and you will do great.
Genetics, four tests, one final exam, drops one test, drops lowest test, second lowest test 10%, other two 20%, final 30%, participation 20% (!). Had an A in the class till the final, which is largely cumulative, dropped to an A-. Do not underestimate the material. Practice quizzes are a necessity and a boon. Tests a bit harder than you think.
Great professor. Really cares about his students and gives you all the tools to succeed. It can be easy to let this class slip through the cracks so don't underestimate his material. Go to class, take notes on his powerpoints, do the practice quizzes and you will be set. Don't bother buying the book, the powerpoints are all you need.
Be prepared to type very fast onto the .ppt's that he posts prior to class. Any salient, tiny, minute points that he states during class, TYPE them down; more than likely, they WILL be on the test. Tests are horrid, tend to be meant to trick you & make you think you know nothing. Do not skip class - clicker points are key. Don't be rude.
Although this class is easy, I did not learn much from the class as he goes over his powerpoints very quickly. His tests are very tricky, but it is really easy to get an A or B in his class if you just repeatedly go over the study questions he posts online. Although his teaching could be improved, he is a really nice guy and will help you whenever.
I took the online version of his class. Very unprofessional during his recorded lectures. He was unclear in the syllabus which quizzes were for points and which were not and when he finally clarified it he did not allow people who took the wrong ones to take the correct ones. MEET session are very helpful!
Dr. El-Rady had very fair exams. Just make sure to do well on the online quizzes, because those are a large part of your grade. Quizzes are solely based on the online textbook, and a lot of the material from the textbook is not on the exams. STUDY HIS POWER POINTS. Also, if he says something in a lecture video, it might show up on the exam!
Medical Mycology was taught for the first time in 5 years- that said, the course overall wasn't particularly difficult, but his exam format can be tough. El-Rady has a tendency to ask questions about topics that were NOT majorly important in the lectures. His "truncated" notes are still upwards of 300-400 slides... Good teacher, but be careful...
Don't take
Passionate professor. There for you. You will learn the material well and he cares about his students. Make sure you go to MEET they are helpful! Quizzes are similar to exams although exams has a few trick questions on it. Nice guy. Definitely take him!
I would love to take any science class with Dr. El-Rady again. Took Genetics, my first online science class ever, his video lectures were AMAZING! I felt like I was actually in class learning. Quizzes were a little difficult sometimes, make sure you watch the test reviews &all videos. It is not hard to get an A if you put in your time!
He is a teacher that is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is teaching. When he said something was going to be on the exam it was. He is very fair and accessible to students.
He's hilarious and super accommodating to his classes. He was constantly extending deadlines for students. He provides an informative yet amusing online lecture with his powerpoint as well as a great review for exams. I would take another class from him without hesitation!
- He gives a couple clicker questions during each lecture. Would recommend briefly reading the notes before actually going to class. - His grading is a little bit weird but works better for the student. - No curving.
El-Rady is an awesome professor. He explains material very well in his online lectures. He also is super understanding and will help you manage everything if you have something come up. Exams are kind of difficult, but very straight-forward if you study the material and know important details. Overall, great professor!
He is so GREAT!! The class was straight forward and he gives a lot of opportunities to succeed. I really enjoyed his class and would love to have him again in the future. Plenty of time to do homework, possible EC opportunities, great to communicate with.
He has high expectations and expects you to have prior knowledge based on other Bio classes. His tests requires you to know materials beyond his lectures. Clickers are a major part of the grade. He also sometime makes you teach yourself on certain materials since he doesn't have time to teach it, which is not fair.
Great professor, did everything he could to make sure we got good grades. Lectures are clear and easy to follow, he does not try and trick or confuse you; everything is straight to the point. Would take him again in a heartbeat!
His online genetic class is awesome. Watch all the lectures and take notes, 2 homeworks (difficult) make sure to do them at least 1 week before the due date. Everything you need for the exams are on his lecture notes. Understand the material, don't memorize it. Ask him if you need help. M.E.E.T sessions are your best friend!
He teaches very well and he is fair. Tests come from the notes, and the most important thing to do is the optional quizzes before the tests for practice. If you can do and understand those, you will do very well on tests. Same type of questions
Great professor. Took him for genetics. While the class does have some difficult material, his tests are largely conceptual and don't ask very complicated questions. His lectures are pretty boring but its very doable.
Dr. El-Rady is an amazing professor, very caring. He puts out all sorts of resources, including practice quizzes, videos, solved problems. He is very straightforward in what he expects from the students. Participation matter, he uses clicker questions for attendance and they are similar to exam questions. Absolutely recommend him.
Wonderful professor!
Took him online for genetics. I was nervous about taking genetics online but it has been super easy. Tests are multiple choice and are a mix between problems and conceptual stuff. His lectures are pretty straightforward and lighthearted. He basically tells you what is going to be on the test during his reviews. I definitely recommend.
Medical mycology for undergrad. His exams are not weighted equally. 2 midterms and then a final. Highest midterm grade is 30%, lower one is 20%, 25 for attendance, 3% for critiquing a paper and then final is 45%!!!. The midterms were easy, he basically told us a lot of questions on review day that would be on the exam. The final however brutal
NO textbook, only slides, hurray plus he truncates them. yay! tests not crazy. micro majors take this class over microbial physiology with Kathleen in spring
I took Dr. El-Rady for Human Genetic and General Genetics. He has to be one of the most passionate, intelligent professors I have had during my undergraduate career. You have to know a lot of material for his exams, but he makes this easy by truncating his lecture slides. Very easy to talk to and truly cares about his student.
So much material and memorization!!!! By no means and easy upper level elective. El-rady is great but truncated test material was still 400+ slides. It's a mixed class with graduate students, only difference is grad students have to do a presentation but take the same exams. For undergrad students the final is worth 45% of grade and it was rough!!
Four exams (no final), multiple quizzes, discussion forum, LearnSmart activities, and two homeworks (difficult!). Genetics is a lot of work so you have to work hard for it. He cares a lot about his students and is very caring. Definately attend his M.E.E.T sessions if you can since he tells you the basic guidelines for the exam there.
I will rave about Dr. El-Rady forever. Genetics is super hard but he gives a lot of practice material for the exams and really cares about the success of his students. Hes always cracking jokes and his lectures are very interesting. Hes been teaching general genetics for 20+ years so he knows what hes doing. love him.
He has a very lazy style of lecturing and he just reads from slides. I love biology, but he couldn't keep my attention. His exams could be a bit challenging, but if you study hard you'll do fine. Attendance is mandatory (clickers) and there's a ton of online homework. For those who can attend office hours and MEET sessions, I've heard they're good.
The students, who were doing well, were taking him for a second time. Reads directly from powerpoints. MEET sessions (which are supposed to help) are misleading. Be prepared to memorize everything and be tested on material thats much harder than what he reads off the powerpoints in class. This class is important. You will NOT succeed w this prof!
Tests had material that was never discussed and were extremely difficult! During lectures the material will be explained in one way and then tested differently. Readings were assigned but the material on the test did not agree with the readings. Not consistent. Does not email back. Makes genetics harder than it needs to be. RUN!
Dr. El-Rady is really a nice guy, he is an encouraging professor that wants you to succeed. That is until he gives you the exam, he claims that the material he gives is easy. The thing is that the examples he gives in class are 1. confusing at best and 2. much easier than the ones on the actual exam. I had a 4.0 before this and this was my first B.
Dr. El Rady as a person seems cool and funny. As a professor however, I wouldnt take him ever again. His tests are very very tricky and question if you even studied for the right class sometimes. Its very very demanding when it doesnt need to be, its hard to manage esp when youre taking another class like Orgo.
A good prof encourages students to get excited about learning. I felt prepared for every test bc the study material he gave was relatively easy, I read the book, studied in advance, did the hws,and still could not pass. Overall test class avg. of 300+ students was C's and D's. Most students I spoke to were lost and disappointed w the class.
Only went to class to answer the clicker questions as I usually didnt follow what was going on in class and just learned on my own. Important to take screenshots of the clicker questions to solve and understand later. Complete and understand all of the quizzes on canvas. Understand HW as well. All of these things helped to get an A. Work hard!
His tests are only 30 qstns and I cant imagine how I would pass this class if I didn't have copies of his past exams. He drops 1 test and thinks b/c he cuts off the A at 90 and A+ at 95 that he's already gone too far. But here's the thing, his weight is so bad. My 3 tests were 29, 29, 28 and I got a 50 on the final. Got an A-, how ridic is that??
Rushes thru lectures. Clicker questions r difficult. I knew students who were receiving A's had a sly way to do it because the tests were 30q and impossible to pass! Read the textbook before each lecture and understood the quizzes still was not able to pass. Resources are terrible. Tells you to email him w questions. Don't expect help or a response
I'm not sure if he's changed his teaching style since 2016 but I didn't relate to the experiences most of his students had at that time. I tried my hardest, studying for hours, and I still felt lost throughout. I tried going to him and was shrugged off. This was the most difficult class I've taken and the most defeated I've ever felt in college.
As context, I do well in bio classes and classes that require a lot of memorization. The powerpoints alone were enough for studying, most of which I did the night before and day of. It's challenging to get an A but doable if you do amazing on the 3 exams during the semester, giving you more leeway on the final. If you do not test well, be cautious.
I have a 3.9 gpa. I'm an excellent test taker. I studied the powerpoints in depth, as well as the book, and the practice quizzes. The tests were absolutely impossible. He will not email you back if you have a question and will rush you if you go to his office hours. He rushes the lectures. Not thorough and expects too much from undergrads.
Terrible Professor. Avoid At All Cost!!
I took the class online with in person exams. It's about what you'd expect of a genetics class. He does do both in person and online reviews before tests. There is extra credit, along with the all the homework (for every module it's about 2 or 3 chapters on connect, a quiz and a discussion) and then a overall course homework due at the end.
This was an online course. He gives you every chance to do well. Tests were straight forward (not tricky), he gave extra credit, there were all sorts of assignments that were doable to improve your grade. He did exam review sessions. If you don't do well, it is because you did not try! His grade ranges are lower than USF recommends (A- 88-90)!
Dr. El-Rady is one of the best professors I have had the pleasure of taking at USF. He makes genetics interesting and stimulates learning to levels I have never before seen in my undergraduate studies. His tests are not a cake walk, you will have to study but he gives you every tool you need for success.
Professor El-Rady is an excellent lecturer. His exams are easy because he tells you exactly what to prepare for if you just show up to his review session. I cannot fathom struggling on his exams because he prepares you so well (Unless you do not study or skip lectures). His lectures are both interesting and funny. He makes it very easy to succeed.
Professor El-Rady is hands down my favorite professor at USF. His compassion towards his students is unparalleled, and he makes decisions with your convenience in mind. His humor maintains a stimulating and entertaining learning environment. I genuinely looked forward to his lectures. Attend his review sessions and you will be beyond prepared.
Professor El-Rady is an excellent professor! His passion for teaching his students is unmatched and he often makes time for his online students to sit down one on one and discuss topics in the course and any question you may have.
The students with tests are writing the good reviews because they have answers. If you take him you will find out the hard way that he is a horrible professor. The tests are completely unrelated to the material, the test reviews do not help, so much busy work. If you want to maintain your GPA and learn genetics, thoroughly, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I don't know how anyone could do "bad" in this class. He provides us with MEET sessions that explain the exact questions that will appear on the exam. I put in minimal effort most of the semester and got a B+. He also gave the opportunity for extra credit, which was very easy. Class is very straightforward if you truthfully put in the time.
take this course online! I took this in person and withdrew bc I had boya-whatever she was bad. everyone says his course online is way easier than his in person and its true. His exams were only worth 48% online. In person they are 80 something %. He is a good professor. He made us do a horribly painful assignment tho, dont wait last min on it.
El-Rady is an awesome, hilarious professor. I took this course online and did the minimum because of some personal family issues going on, I couldn't give my usual 110% effort, I still ended with a B. He gives extra credit, as long as you do all the assignments and discussions you will have a good grade. He follows his study guide to a tee!
He's honestly terrible. Very unlikely to get an A in the course, essentially impedes your ability to learn, as you're essentially forced to watch his dry and excessively long lecture videos. He posts PowerPoints, but they literally have giant chunks of text missing from them, as he wants you to watch his 1990's Lecture Videos. Awful professor.
He's been teaching this course for years and perfected his materials. Need to come to class in order to fill in the blanks on his posted notes. Accuracy counts on clickers qs but they're easy. Really cares and enjoys what he teaches. Genuine guy with a good sense of humor.
One of the worst professors ever. Homeworks take hours and do not correlate to the exam. Clickers are not capped.
Grades are highly based on quiz scores, not on homework. Quizzes, however, are online and he does not give access to your results, so you don't ACTUALLY know what you are doing wrong. In other words, most of what you study could be wrong but you don't really know. The exams he gives are the most difficult exams that I've ever taken. Don't do it.
He is the worst. Smart but cannot teach at all. He goes about 100mph through the lectures and its overwhelming. The homework is a huge waste of time. Also no curves(gave my class one point on an exam) or extra credit. Super heavy percentage wise for exams around like 85 I think. Take it online its easier Ive heard.
Good prof but lectures suck and arent worth attending. He just reads off his slides. His clickers are tough and not capped so that hurt my grade a little. Homework took hours but was a little helpful. I did much better on exams when I was able to attend MEET session so make sure to go to those if possible. Totally doable class
El-Rady is good to take online, but his exams are kinda tricky, as well as that THEY ARE IN PERSON SATURDAY EXAMS, so know what you're signing up for. His lectures are thorough and he is reasonable, it takes quite a bit of effort to study for his exams but ultimately he is a good professor who makes genetics interesting. But discussion posts :(.
El Rady is one of the best professors at USF. He cares so much about his students. He has been teaching genetics for 20 years so he really knows what he's doing. You can get an A if you go to class and do the readings and homework, and he keeps it very interesting. He has office hours and lunch meet-ups. I haven't met anyone who didn't love him.
Took his online course. I LOVE his teaching style but he makes you study a LOT of material. One of the tests was based on almost 300 slides that he expected us to know every word of. He also gives a lot of unnecessary busywork/quizzes. You have to work hard for your grade but he makes things interesting and gives fantastic reviews.
I took him fully online. His tests are difficult but if you review the meet session he pretty much tells you the exact topics that will be on the exam, some are broad though. That being said he gives a lot of unnecessary assignments that I don't feel helped me for the 3 tests. The tests are weighed less if u get a lower score and 6 points EC
Do you want a professor that is caring, understanding, and respectful of his students? So did I! Now go look up any other professor except El-Rady. He is arrogant and completely lacks compassion when it comes to his students well-being and issues that are out of one's hand which, shocker, are bound to happen considering the current circumstances...
Dr. El-rady is great! He does a good job explaining things and gives tons of practice material to prepare you for his exams. I would say the class is the usual difficulty for a biology class and most of your grade comes from the exams (85%).
El-Rady is nice, but this class is so difficult. He doesn't explain concepts well but there are practice quizzes to help solidify material. However, he doesn't put the explained work so you are guessing on how to solve certain problems. he assigns so much homework not relevant to the exams just for it to be work 5 points. Do not take this class!
He comes off as a good guy but the class needs to be restructured. The exams are heavy as most classes are but the homework which takes hours on hours of work is only worth a measly 5 points? If it was weighted heavier I would have saved my gpa but nah. Also exams didn't test material from lecture which sucked. He also does clickers in class
Dr. El-Rady loves teaching genetics. His grading is super fair, he dropped the lowest exam and quiz (4 exams and 9 quizzes, nothing cumulative). Definitely need to work a bit for the grade and be knowledgeable, but he and his TAs do great reviews for every module and for every exam.
Show up every week and remember stuff like the module checks, M.E.E.T. review, and guided notes are somewhat useful, do all the work and don't get discouraged by quiz questions - they are always frustrating. Get quick at solvable problems because time is an issue and the exams should be easier than I found them to be.
This is my second time taking El-Rady and I am so grateful for him lol. He is a great professor but other than that he is a very fair grader and will give you a lot of opportunity, if you fail this class you literally did nothing. It was a rough semester but Im glad I took genetics with him, wish he taught more classes.
Dr. El-rady had nice personality. As a professor, he gave a lot of assignments including Pearson material that might not be helpful on exams. His lecture notes still the best. However, assignments boosted the final grade because they were 50%. Also, his TAs could be confusing because they used lab experiment questions in lecture review sessions.
I had him for genetics and he was a great professor, I would 100% take him again. He knows his stuff and explains it really well, and is very funny. I highly recommend him!
Quiz and hw assignments every module. The exams aren't too bad, there are only 4 and 1 of them gets dropped. There is no final for this class, you just take exam 4 around the time of finals. The book quizzes are very confusing and his lectures didn't help all that much going into them. Plan to spend a lot of time studying to prepare for exams
3 exams, no final, no drops. Online hw, synchronous sessions, clicker questions along with a project. The class was interesting but study his material to pass. Doesnt proctor his exams but uses lockdown. Prepare yourself for probability questions and review the material. One of the best profs USF has to offer! Others should be more like him!
Genetics is hard, especially the math. However, El-Rady is a wonderful professor. He cares about his students and is a fair grader. You do need to put in the work to memorize and study, but he condenses the powerpoints to make it more manageable. 3 exams, some homework, and a large project that was graded pretty fairly.
Dr. El-Rady makes genetics fun to learn & is readily available if you need help. He provides many opportunities to prepare for the exams outside of normal lectures, and structures his class very well. His grading scale is a bit more generous than usual, and he would sometimes curve the exams slightly. I recommend him if you want to enjoy genetics.
this class will mess you up! I cannot understand how this man is still teaching. save yourself and DONT take this man. I somehow got an A last semester but it was hell. save yourself please
There are about 200-300 questions of homework due every week. An entire day of work worth MAX 5 points. Exams are WAY MORE in comparison. Along with a quiz and a discussion also due weekly. The discussion needs to be a minimum of 150 and you also need to respond to someone elses post (this response also needs to be 150 words). Hes nice though.
He is very kind and genuinely cares about his students. He is a tough guy, so he may be intimidating to speak with outside of class. His lectures are very helpful and he keeps them as concise as possible. The closed captions are always on and they are accurate. The exams are hard but he tells you exactly what will be on the exam. Would recommend!
It was an easy class, he gave us extra credit and weekly homework and quizzes .
I dislike him, I signed up for this class as an inperson class he chose to have it online, but he made exams in person. His exams are not all MCQ and he loves trick questions. He has a project that he has due right before exams and he says it will be easy but the questions are tricky and the other requirements are tedious. The homeworks are tedious
Professor El-Rady is super nice if you email him outside of class and he offers tons of resources for both class and potential problems that may arise in class. Read as much of the textbook, lectures, and notes that you can. The tests were hard for me no matter how hard I studied or read, but they're doable. Attend the extra credit lectures.
One of the best professors I've ever had. I found his lectures very engaging. The course material is difficult but it's genetics, so that's expected. That being said, Professor El-Rady made the class much easier with his own grading scale that allows for your lowest quiz and test to be dropped. He also gave extra credit for attending reviews.
He gave good lectures but the exams had a couple of curveballs for sure. All of the homework assignments were basically participation grades but they did take a minute to complete. If you have the time to devote to this class, you'll succeed.
Dr. El-Rady is wonderful. He does everything in his power to help you succeed. It is genetics so you still have to earn your grade. However, he offers tons of extra credit, curved grade scale and tells you exactly what to expect on the exams. He drops lowest exam grade and quiz grade. I don't like taking exams in person for an online class though.
El-rady is good prof but i don't like his exam and grading scale. I have an avg of 88% on the exam and 85% on the final and I got 100% on all assignments and all I got was a A-. Worst grading scale ever this means I need to get like above 90% on all exam which is impossible because his exam is worded weirdly and contain info outside the lecture.
Take it from me when I tell you this man is my least favorite professor of all time. I am now a senior at USF and his grading scale put such a detriment on my GPA. Professor El Rady is so passive agressive whenever anybody asks any sort of question. His final counts as 30% of your grade, and his exams are not easy. If you have to take genetics, gl.
Love him as a person and provides great lectures and reviews, but the exams are HARD... Class is online and exams are in person... on saturdays... Grading scale needs to be changed bc your grade is essentially only exams. He is such a great professor but my GPA is hurting :(
Dr. El-Rady never fails to make lectures engaging, though he often treats them like a speedrun. His tests are difficult, but your highest exam scores are weighted heavier, and one midterm is dropped. Clicker questions are not capped, so attendence is essentially mandatory. There is lots of homework, but it is extremely beneficial for exams.
I took this course fully online over the summer. The professor provides lecture videos that are very clear and tutorials on how to complete problems related to the content. He provided extra credit opportunities by attending review sessions for modules and exams. Loved him!!
Dr. El-Rady is a great professor. He is a genuine guy who really just wants you to succeed. His grading scale is very fair and generous and if you just put in the work you can earn a good grade. Only downside is lots of homework weekly that is time consuming and not worth alot of the grade. Aside from that, the class was great.
Dr. El-Rady is amazing! Clickers and Homework are fairly straightforward. Exams tend to be slightly difficult but definitely can pass. He is so passionate about Genetics and it translates to his students performing well. If you are taking genetics, take him. He provides so many practice problems that help you to succeed.
Dr. El-Rady is by far the best option for genetics. His passion is palpable and he makes the subject very interesting. He's also a very fair grader. Tests are a good reflection of lectures. He also makes available plenty of resources. Thank goodness USF has Dr. El-Rady.
When I say that this is one of the worst professor USF has to offer I mean it. Extremely disrespectful, takes 3-4 days ON AVERAGE to respond to emails, boring/monotone lectures, and has an excessive reliance on the textbook. Positives to be fair are a plethora of resources provided, however, the most helpful resources were designed by students.
Dr. El Rady is obviously very passionate about what he does however his grading scale was flawed. Exams are 85% of your grade. The other 15% comes from in class attendance questions and hours worth of online homework. The exams were 30 questions so there is little room for mistake. The final is 30% of your grade. He did curve by 1% at the end.
Dr. El-Rady is amazing at teaching. He makes extra lecture videos to walk students through exactly how to solve tough problems, and his lectures are entertaining to watch. His grading scale is EXTREMELY forgiving, and he offers extra credit for attending review sessions. Exams questions were just like review questions, so no surprises.
Genetics is a difficult class, and Dr. El-Rady really did not help. The grading criteria is insane: 85% tests and 10% clickers, not capped or curved - you need 100% on them. Lectures were often off topic and he was dismissive to questions. He has a long career of being a great professor but I didn't feel helped at all. Read the textbook and pray.
He's a great lecturer, although he often covers a lot more content than he needs to. His Canvas is organized well and he offers tons of resources to study and get you ready for the exams. The exams are also all MCQ, but little to no curve. Overall, I would probably take him again, but be prepared because this is a fairly difficult class.
Dr. El-Rady is a great professor! His lectures can be very fast-paced, but since its an online class, that doesn't really matter. It is difficult to contact him via email, but his TAs were always quick to respond. As long as you don't procrastinate, you'll do just fine in this class!
El Rady is known as one of the best profs at USF! I took his online genetics course and loved it, he talks a bit slow so watching his lectures in 2x speed and as much as I needed was nice. He has extra credit, gives a ton of help. BIGGEST THING: before each exam, do the concept checks! These are questions from old exams, so they help the most!
This class was memorization heavy. You have to make sure to set time aside to take this class, he also is very hard to get a hold of outside of class. There is extra credit opportunities by attending the meeting sessions. He also does not like you making up exams so make sure you try not to schedule things on that day.
Dr. El-Rady is an amazing professor. I took this class during the summer. There were 3 exams, none were cumulative, and there was no final. I have nothing bad to say about Dr. El-Rady. If you study you will get the grade you worked for. I would read the textbook and his uploaded documents because they cover everything. He gave extra credit away.
Dr. El-Rady is a knowledgeable professor. While lectures can be fast-paced, the well-organized Canvas site and practice questions help. Using unstuckstudy ai alongside the textbook and attending review sessions is key to success.
El-Rady was great! He goes over a lot of material in each lecture but provides skeleton notes in canvas. I personally didn't read the textbook because he covers a lot in class and completing the homework through mcgraw hill covered enough. No extra credit but he provides a lot of study material in class and on canvas.
El Rady is great - I never read the book only watched his presentations and took notes. Homeworks were busywork and quizzes were difficult. Tests were slightly hard but he goes over some questions in the MEET sessions so they are well worth your time! TAs were very only helpful for grading questions - not actual genetics. He's super understanding!!
He is a great professor and does a great job at explaining material. Homework is long but helps with the material, there are discussion posts and a quiz per module which also takes up time. Lectures are straightforward, he has review sessions before his exams which help a lot and his TAs review every module.
He has very interactive online course and everything is easy to follow. The 1st exam was the hardest and requires some studying but everything else was easy to understand. There are practice quizzes for you if you are struggling too. Very generous grading and 1 exam is dropped. 10/10 would recommend.
I honestly consider him a must-take at USF. He's funny and he's been a professor longer than I've been alive, so he really knows his stuff. He can be a little confusing in class and he goes through material really fast, but he has a lot of materials available to practice for exams. He's also always available for extra office hours. Great guy.
He is a nice guy, but the amount of material in so little time is tough. If you can put the time in, it's easy, but if not, read the textbook, use AI, and pray. I took this course with three other difficult science courses and this was unfortunately the class that I sacrificed. Uncapped clickers and tricky exam questions. Nice grading scale.
Exams are hard studying can't help you. You can study for weeks and still not do great. Prepare for how hard the material is and the mass amount of it ..
He posts a lot of good resources to make sure you understand the content. He does review sessions before every exam that count as extra credit, these are super helpful as he goes over a lot of exactly what will be on the exam! One thing though is that he is hard to reach via email, but overall great professor, super passionate about what he does.
Class organization, grading, and material is good, definitely not a bad course overall. Just 2 things: the TAs and Prof. El-Rady are super hard to reach by email and the tests are detail heavy. You basically need to memorize the powerpoints and MEETs to do well. I cannot honestly say I learned much. Be ready to memorize.
Out of respect, I do not fw J Diddy. His exams are so difficult and rely on a lot of memorization. He only gives 1.5% of extra credit. Everyone gets a different exam despite taking it at the same time. If he wants students to take their exams online, there should be no Honorlock required since we are all taking the exam at the same time.
A very passionate professor with a great sense of humor. I had taken this course online, and over the summer semester. I believe it may be better understood in person. All of the information is provided to you with all powerpoint presentations available. The exams are tough though, so I would recommend studying seriously.
He has a good grading method, he's not bad. He just never answers emails and its not very mindful of students. In the ppts, he gives on average ~ 200 slides, plus 1 quiz and 2 "mindtap" style that took me like at least 3 hours, PER WEEK. It was so much content and homework. It wasn't hard, just annoying and time consuming
Genetics is by no means an easy course, but El-Rady has really great lectures and provides students with a lot of useful study material. He hosts review sessions for exams and the TA's also hold review sessions for each module which I found really helpful. You get what you put into the class. I would definitely take another class with him again.
Honestly surprised I got an A but his grading scale is pretty generous. 1 exam out of 4 is dropped and there's no cumulative final. I think I spent more time on mcgraw hill assignments than anything else for this class. Just review the slides and do the practice quizzes multiple times and you'll be fine. Also attend extra credit review sessions.
