He is one of the best professor at MSU. He is very friendly to students. You can learn a lot in his classes. Likes to help students.
Great teacher. Passionate and very interested in making learning fun. His enthusiasm makes any class he teaches worth taking.
Such a nice, excited, passionate professor. He loves what he does. Makes the class read the best books. Can talk and ask him about anything. Never raises his voice or yells. Makes you feel at home. AND HE'S HOT!
He's hot but he's pretentious and condescending. He treats the class as if it is a high school poetry class, not a college level literature course.
Exceptionally student-oriented. Makes himself available and approachable. Helps students make the best possible presentations of their written work. Encourages creativity and scholarship. Wish he would teach more upper-level or grad courses.
Very hot brazilian guy!!!!!!!!
He's an amazing professor- he knows his stuff and has a lot of interesting things to say. Plus, he's HOTT! Definately take him at least once when you're at MSU or you're missing out!
Wow he is gorgeous and very sensual...Plus, he is a very open, challenging and understanding teacher. He allows and wants you to be creative with your thinking. He picks great literature...Plus he is sooooo hot!!!!
awesome teacher
Clear, Nice. Fair grader. A little dry. Would recommend.

He's a good teacher and a nice guy. To the previous comment: Why does sexuality matter?
Totally over-rated looks wise. Class is okay but boring like every other english course. Take him if you want to read something different than european stuff but otherwise he's a dork.
~.~ yes he is hot! Very helpful
Too into the language of the stories we read and bores the class from this. Needs to make the class more interesting by not going so in depth with the language. On papers, he takes forever to get them back to you and takes off points on everything.
He is brilliant. He makes it very clear what he wants you to do for him. He makes you write your papers in steps which is unbelievably helpful. We read very interesting things. I am taking him again next semester. Not to mention...he has a smile to die for.
Cares about students, one of the best in my opinion in teaching how to write critically. Forces you to delve into words to produce your own meanings. Preparation he takes to help us in papers and class in general is so helpful.
Lorenz is a brilliant professor and really knows his stuff. He really focuses on the language of the stories you will read and makes you analyze critically. You have to come to class prepared or this is not the class to take....oh and ladies.......he has a SMILE TO DIE FOR....he is soooo cute.
I have taken three of his classes and I am now a Literature major, I never truly appreciated reading anything until his class, he teaches you to see the beauty in language and for other countries. I have learned so much about other countries that it has touched my heart
Incredible professor. Always prepared and provides great insight on readings. Knowledgeable and conducts workshops directly related to upcoming assignments. Highly recommended.

The man is so smart. The best teacher I had at MSU. I learned the most from him.
Caution, hot.
he is very handsome, but when you get to know him he likes everything done his way or no way
For a GEN-ED class, he is to harsh when it comes to writing..He is very passionate about the subject..but too much work for a GEN-Ed class...at least he's cute to look at...
I have taken him 3 times during my years at MSU as an English major. He is sexy as hell, interesting, and you will definately learn something. He is hands down the best professor I've had at MSU.

Material is pretty boring, but it's a gen ed class..and fairly easy. For whatever reason, girls seem to be in love with this guy...it's fairly evident when female students throw their panties at him when he gives a lecture. He's the tom jones of English...

he's great! i really learned a lot in his class. he gives a lot of work...but you learn a lot from his class. take him!

Class is worth it just because of how hot he is, but the material is pretty interesting too. I feel like I actually learned about poetry and writing in his class. Not the easiest class but if you pay attention to his tips you should do fine. Highly recommend.
on top of being hot, he really knows what he's talking about. Has very high standards but B's are attainable if you do the work. Can be condescending at times but overall a good professor.
He's very passionate and knowledgable about his subject, but very open to student's own opinions and interpretations. However, he's very into exploring the 'poetry of language' in the novels he chooses, so if you don't like poetry, don't take it! Otherwise, its a stimulating, interesting class with very interesting reading!
So what if he's attractive? It doesn't change the fact that he's a self-important ass. There's nothing creative about this class. Learn to write exactly like him or you'll get nothing but Bs on every assignment. Take someone else for Creative Writing.
Very good teacher. He is understanding and passionate... probably the best gen-ed teaher I have had. Make sure you keep up with your discussion board because in the end that will REALLY help you if you happen to slip up on the mid term and/or final. HE is a stickler on attendance too... after 3 your grade is lowered.
He loves language, and he wants you to love it too. Interesting discussions and great choices of poems to discuss.
Forget what students say about him being "hot." He's inspiring. He loves what he does, and makes you love it even more. The only problem is that he talks to students as if they're students instead of individuals. He seems more like friend, but he won't let you be one. You're his student, and that's all.
Hmm, where to start. First off, we both have very different writing styles. I'm not into the poetry and dissection of each and every single word. This became a problem. I'm sure he's a really nice guy and he seems like he's into what he's teaching, but we just didn't click. If you like poetry, take him. He does come off as being a bit stuck up.
Prof Lorenz is awesome. I loved his class. He's cool and laid back, but really cares and makes sure you're learning. He is critcal of your writing and can be a tough grader, but overall if you do all your discussion boards and come to class there is no way you can get a bad grade and you really learn in the process
You are either going to love him or hate him. If you are a gifted writer and write what he deems the correct way, you are going to receive a good grade. I actually loved the poetry class, but I could not seem to write the way he expected. This class really brought down my GPA. Not a warm person, keeps his distance from his students.
He's not a bad guy, but his teaching method and grading is different than how I expected a Creative Writing class to be. He has a strong idea of what is "good" writing and doesn't sway much. I didn't dislike him, per say, but I love writing and kind of dreaded the class for various reasons. It could be a worse professor, but there could be better.
Took three classes with him. He's a stand up guy who loves what he does. He wants students to be involved and share his passion for writing, poetry and reading. There's some work and studying involved, but it's worth it because of how much you learn in the class. A passionate professor who will make you remember why you?re English major.
Fun and interesting but hard to talk to.
Nice but can go on and on sometimes.Won't let you out of class early, will make you do a group assignment that goes nowhere. I wish he would have gone into more about what our stories meant and let us really disect them. Better than a lot of Eng.profs. Can be funny and definetely laid back. Good guy all around
He is laid back and nice but OMG can he go on about nothing. He resists going into detail about the stories bc he doesn't want to give too much away but in turn, our discussions were lame. His MT paper was unfair bc he penalized us for making an argument. He wanted us to only write about the poetry but didn't tell us that until a wk bf it was due.
Sometimes I was frustrated by his tough grading but it really did make me work harder and improved my writing. Learned so much from this Professor. Utilize his office hours, he'll spend all the time you need on your work.
Professor Lorenz was great. We used the text a lot, but it was only used as a model for our writing assignments. He is a tough grader when it comes to getting A's, but you get used to what he wants after a while. He's very nice and encourages class discussion which is the best part. 3 poems, 2 fiction, 1 drama assignment. Take him!
Professor Lorenz is a great teacher. He challenges lazy analysis in his students. Each class, he puts forth clear and insightful arguments about the readings. Take his courses.
Professor Lorenz is a great Professor that challenges his students. I took him 3 times. He divides the class grading into three section...1/3 Discussion Board, 1/3 Midterm or Essay and 1/3 Final or essay. Do all 8 discussion boards and get a guaranteed A in 1/3 of your grade. He's laid back but wants good thoughtful, strong poetic writing! Take him
I took Professor Lorenz for American Indian Themes. He was definitely a tough grader. As a student who does very well in most classes, I found his grading style difficult. I was not really sure what he expected which made the class hard. He also treated the class more like a writing class than a literature class.
Honestly the best english professor at MSU. He is not an easy grader, but it's a good thing. I looked forward to going to the class every time, he has the most enlightening discussions. I got an A but I worked for it. If you're lazy don't take this class
Dr. Lorenz is an excellent professor. The class was always engaging. I walked out every time feeling like I had learned a lot or at the very least that I had been intellectually stimulated to think about a lot. The work load was completely reasonable. He gives some of the best feedback on papers that I've ever gotten. Would easily recommend him.
I only had Dr Lorenz for a co-op teacher for Pursuits. Though he was not grading my papers, he was extremely insightful, clear, as well as intelligent. He also has a very poetic voice, so it's easy to get pulled in to what he is saying, as he makes everything sound very nice.
This professor is very good, had him a few times. He was very clear and funny. You will learn in his class. Highly reccomended
NEVER EVER TAKE HIS 3 week ONLINE CLASS!!! He was definitely a tough grader. His expectations are ridiculous!! Never responds to email. The 2 papers we have to write are pointless! Ruined my GPA....smh
Hilarious. HORRIBLE GRADER, i worked so hard on my midterm, got a D. He only gives TWO major grades, midterm&final. A few quizzes, but make sure you really focus on those papers. He can literally ramble about nothing for 2 hours. Hate the way he grades, and make sure do readings, he quizzes you on them
Don't do it to yourself. Very very tough class, really high expectations. I wouldn't put myself through it again.
Professor Lorenz was definitely one of the best professors I've ever had. He was very informative and helpful, and I walked away from the class knowing I learned a lot. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS OFFICE HOURS! It helps a lot, and he's a fun professor to get to know! You'd miss out by not taking this professor.
You will learn a lot about poetry in this class, but you have to actually READ it-- and read it out loud to yourself at home! We had two papers (one as an in-class final), and discussion boards on Canvas. Each counted as a third of the grade. Definitely take this class with Professor Lorenz, and VISIT HIS OFFICE HOURS! It helps a lot!
Get the books and pay attention to GUIDELINES!!! Drops lowest paper grade. 3 papers and 7 discussion boards.
Professor Lorenz is one of the best English professors I've taken at MSU. His lectures are so inspirational and interesting. He's very considerate and is always available to chat during office hours. Grading is based on attendance and 7 in-class written assignments. No midterm or final. Would highly reccommend him!
Professor Lorenz is one of the best professors I've taken at MSU. His office hours are extremely helpful! This class really helped me develop as a writer and inspired me to pursue poetry more in depth. You're graded on 7 written poems and attendance. If you're interested in reading or writing poetry, I HIGHLY recommend this class and professor!
Class is based on reading 6 books and answering about 3 questions on each one, he drops lowest grade and the other 5 are 20% each. You are allowed 4 absences. He is a great teacher and loves what he does, but his class gets boring at times. It is mostly him talking about the book we are currently or already read then wants us to ask questions
Professor Lorenz is very smart and very skilled at poetry however he comes off as extremely nasty. He is a TOUGH grader and loves to give the class snarky comments that make him come off as pretentious. Took this as an online course and couldn't stand him. Can't imagine how he would be in person. Would NOT take again.
Professor Lorenz is a nice man. He's extremely knowledgable in what he teaches and offers great feedback. He's very helpful outside of class and will help you with anything you don't understand. He's also pretty easy going during lectures and funny. However, he's a bit of a tough grader so definitely make sure you work hard.
Do not take him if you've had computer issues in the past. He will not take them into consideration and will not grade the work.
He's pretty nice, and I think he grades pretty fairly. It might take you a while to get into the swing of things, but you'll get it and everything will go fine. Just make sure you do the readings.
Prof Lorenz is one of the best! He cares about his students and definitely challenges them to break from their writing habits. There are seven poems total, no midterm or final. Buying the textbooks is mandatory. Office hours are extremely helpful. Lectures are frequent but interesting. Highly recommend!!
I really enjoyed Prof. Lorenz's English class. He is very lecture heavy, but at least he is interesting! He really makes you think outside the box. If you read, you pass! Would DEFINITELY take him again!
I loved Prof Lorenz's Literature class! No note taking or tests, just 6 in class writing assignments based on the books we read. He drops your lowest grade. Really loved our lectures, but reading the books are important for passing! Lectures are laid back but interesting. Would definitely take him again.
Professor Lorenz genuinely wants his students to improve as readers and writers. His lectures are always insightful and his feedback on papers is really helpful. There are two papers and weekly discussion board posts. He looks for precise, detailed, and nuanced analysis. If you don't take him you're missing out!
Prof. Lorenz certainly knows what he is talking about and can be funny at times, but he's generally pretty pompous and will keep you longer than scheduled to talk about unrelated topics. He's a really tough grader and the 7 poems you write are averaged for your final. WARNING: LAST POEM MUST BE MEMORIZED AND PERFORMED!
One thing i'll tell you is that he talks a lot but overall it was such an easy class. You just have to read and you're good, no midterm just a final in class writing assignment. Highly recommend!
You read like 5 books and there are 6 in-class writing assignments. He drops the lowest grade. On a lot of them, he'll give you partial credit just for showing that you read the book 'cause 2 of them are a bit long. Lectures a lot and gets off topic easily, but fun. Can miss up to 4 classes
Not sure why hes got a bad rep but he was incredibly helpful and knew what he was talking about. Always made time to be at his office hours and help you with your rough drafts. Spends time on hard concepts so you can understand the material, he really cares and wants you to do good.
This class made me a better, more considerate writer. Professor Lorenz will push you because he genuinely wants you to produce the best work that you can. He was so patient explaining various concepts and took as much time with us as we needed to make sure we understood. Did I mention one of our assignments was based on Pokemon cards?
Taken him for two classes this semester I had no other option. His lit class isn't easy you read and he gives you an exam, it's a memory test you know the info or you don't. Asks ?'s about lil details. Poetry class he gives great feedback and helps. He is a hard grader and in his lit class there are only tests which became essays bc of COVID.
Very good teacher. Took World Lit & Intro to Poetry Writing with him. His poetry class was much easier and clearer than World Lit. World Lit had difficult readings and really difficult final but poetry really stretched me as a writer. He can be a little pompous and snarky with critiques sometimes but he usually gives very good feedback & is helpful
Couldn't stand him. Knows his stuff, but expects us to be @ his level in an introductory class-- tough grader to say the least. Don't bring the correct book (out of 4)? Absent. Miss 3 classes? Bad grade. Miss 4? Fails u. Doesn't care if u're sick/ have a disability, he will fail u if u miss class & ghost you if u email him w/doctor's note.
This was by far the least interesting and most unclear ENGLcourse. The endless jabbering tends to get in the way of actually learning the material. I am not one to complain about word count, but the fact that the midterm and the final were the same amount was overwhelming. We had a week for the midterm, and less than a couple hours for the final...
Professor Lorenz is a really smart guy and really wants you to succeed in his class. I took his intro to poetry writing class and he gave great feedback. The in-class workshops and exercises are really helpful and judgement free.
If you don't read the books, you will not do well in the class. If you read the books, you will get an A in the class. Lorenz is a fantastic professor who speaks poetically, yet down to earth. He is intelligent and kind, as long as you respect his class. Only 6 in class writing assignments, and he will drop the lowest grade. Just do the reading.
Was not that great and was very picky when it came to grading. For a level 100 course he gave books that were hefty reads and whilst he said you can come up with your own ideas when writing, if it is not close to his you will see a notable grade deduction. His lectures take up the entire class and they are not that interesting nor educating.
Lorenz gave great lectures and was clearly very passionate about what he teaches. We did have to read numerous books, but I genuinely enjoyed every one. My only complaint is that he made us write essays in class and one of them was on a poem he didn't show us until we had to write the essay and he graded a bit harshly for an essay written in an hr
read some books translated by him & they were interesting. Only advice.. READ! You hate reading? this isn't the class for you. No exams, but there is 1 in class writing assignment per book that you cant make up but drops the lowest%. If u dont read/think you can pass with just skimming or reading the summary... literally move along lol. 2 EC's tho
7 poems total with some rough drafts. Opportunity to share poetry with peers and get feedback. Had to memorize one poem and recite it to the class and the final was a "hip hop" poem we had to record over a beat. Definitely was out of my comfort zone but I definitely learned a lot in this class.
