Do not take Bible at TCU. The class drags a bit. We had to do portfolios which seemed a bit like busy work. Tests are pretty hard. STUDY!!
His bible class is pretty hard and requires hours of reading every night. Requires a typed page summary of every class. Tests are hard and cover way too much material.
The daily sheets he makes everyone write for the class are pointless because they are more of a hastle to complete than a helpful tool. His tests are way too hard and he gives reading assignments like his class is the only class we have.
Professor Miles is not an understanding teacher. He assumes that Bible is your only class when most take it simply for a UCR. If you are interested in take religion don't take this class and especially this professor!!
His class required a lot of reading and a lot of studying. It was difficult, but I learned a lot. You cover soooo much material, but I thought it was interesting. Yes, there's a lot of outside of class work, but it keeps you prepared for the tests.
hours of reading, and you have to write a paper after every class for a midterm and final portfolio. This is a UCR so talk to someone and find an easier teacher, he thinks this is your only class.
Class is not easy, daily journals require lots of time. Tests are not easy either. Just study hard and you can make an A.
Hard class lots of notes test straight from notes! Good teacher liked the class learned a lot! just a lot of work outside of class that takes up too much time!
He was the worst teacher ive ever had. His lectures were boring and he just sucks. Save yourself and dont take this class.
OMG this class was SOOOO much more trouble than it was worth! He's a nice man, but just doesn't understand we dont have time for 4 hours of reading a night, which is pointless anyways because the quizzes are too detailed to remember anything.
it was pretty hard and his review sheets for tests were not helpful, and the quizzes were way too hard... sometimes he gave "homework questions" that werent graded but just read that portion of the bible and answer them. study lots and pay atten
Very boring class. He is a very nice man, but my least favorite class by far. If I had the chance I would not have taken this class with him. He does give good notes, but it is hard to stay awake. I want to leave as soon as I can during his class. It's not too hard but its not easy either.
in the beginning of the semester i hated this class, but i have come to enjoy it now. hes a nice man and if you pay attention in class and take good notes you will be fine. his tests are not hard. i currently have an A and dont bust my butt studying. pay attention and youre good to go.
Great prof. Easy to talk to, tests are VERY straightforward - just pay attention and take notes and you will be fine. TCU needs more profs like this one!

OMG! I love Dr. Miles! He is hands down the best teacher I've ever had! He gives you EXACTLY what you need to know for the tests and his class is very fun and interactive. Plus he tells jokes before every class and gives extra credit opportunities... even though you won't need them! Dr. Miles rocks!
Decent as a person, but the material he teaches contradicts the Bible. Just do the review and it's easy, but very frustrating.
O my gosh unless you are not a Christian do NOT take this class. Professor Miles is just weird and teaches things that directly contradict the bible. He does not just give his opinion he forces it on you. Besides that he gives me the creeps. I reccomend another teacher he has issues!
he's a nice man, trys to make learning fun but he's kinda creepy. tests are easy and gives reviews so grades arent really a problem. only problem is that he contradicts the Bible in so many ways that, even tho he says he's a Christian, you wonder, not someone you'd want to have teaching a BIBLE clas
He's a very nice guy and is always in a great mood, but if you're a Christian, you're most likely going to disagree with alot of the stuff he says and it will frustrate you. But if you study the study guides he gives, you're good to go. I wouldn't recommend this class.
This class is challenging, Dr. Miles makes wonderful study guides, if you know that material you can ace the tests, however there is A LOT to remember but it is possible, I think he is a good professor and he really helped me to understand the Bible on a different kind of level. I would recommend hi
His class can be frustrating because he goes against some of what the Bible says. If all your worried about is grades though, just complete and know the study guides he makes for each test. If you know those well there is no reason you can't make an A on every test.
I took this class for personal benefit. I learned WAY more than I expected, and not only was I pleased with Dr. Miles and the way he taught, he helped completely open me up to Christianity; I LOVE the way he teaches the Bible! Very non-biased and academic, as it SHOULD be taught at a university.
Miles is great. Test are simple, and his study guides make them easy. Takes a great approach to teaching the Bible. Doesn't mind playing with those who have a chip on their shoulder. For a laugh, ask him "Jacob White wants to know if you got the memo about class being cancled?"
He's a really great teacher, brought up stuff about the Bible I hadn't even thought about before. Don't think if you went to a religious school your whole life that this class will be easy, cause you do have to study and work hard but I really enjoyed it
dr miles is a great professor. i am a religion minor so im slighly bias but his class was my favorite of my freshman year. if you are taking understanding the bible, i would definantly recommend him over the other profs.

Johnny Miles is amazing! i loved every minute of his class. That man can bench 405 lbs!! He's a very good professor who is obviously very passionate about his work.
He is horrible and gives off a wierd creepy vibe that everyone i have talked to picks up on. Avoid him if you need help he will blow you off.
He is a little hard, not recommended taking him if it is your first semester as a college student.
Avoid this professor. He wasn't a good teacher and he didn't have any sympathy or help to offer to any of the students in my class. Just take the world religion class instead.
decent teacher, hard class. he laughs at everything he says, its a wierd creepy laugh. Joke of the day is never funny, but sometimes entertaining cause they suck so bad. He can bench press like 3000 lbs and he leads the NCAA in receiving yards with 963 and 12 touchdowns after two games, oh yeah hes a receiver for Louisville. YHWH
I was very dissatisfied with this class. I came into this class extremley excited and left frustrated. His tests are easy enough if you do the study guide and somewhat keep up with the reading. What got to me was the way he presents his ideas as fact. If you don't know your Bible very well, you'll fall for 1/2 the stuff he says.
As a person, he is very likeable. I enjoy the joke of the day- though never all that funny. Keeping up with focus questions online is the hardest part. Don't get behind and the class shouldn't be too bad at all. He gives you a lot of material to learn for the study guide although the tests aren't really that long or hard.
Do not take him! This class could be so much easier. He gives you a study guide, but his notes are so scattered that you don't know what to even fill out on the study guide! It is impossible to make a good grade on any of the essays.
I thought Dr. Miles' class was extrememly easy! He tells these stupid "funny" jokes that always end up making you laugh at him...easy class as long as you study!
Don't listen to them, this class is VERY easy. . . he gives you a study guide and you actually fill it out and study it you'll do great!! He makes class fun and is very imformative, I made a B in the class I would recommend it!!
I loved Dr. Miles' class, it was extremely easy. He was very informative and helped me think about things I hadn't thought about before. Study guides are so easy and if you study them you'll do great! The essays can be hard just put time in them and actually think about them! This class is easy, interesting etc. I would recommend it to anyone!

He can easily frustrate you throughout the semester, but in the end of it all you realize it wasn't so bad. He is very condescending at times. As a Christian, I don't agree w/ the way he teaches sometimes. Study guides exactly like tests, but essays can be difficult if you aren't an experienced writer.
Really nice guy- likes it if you talk to him outside of class and answers any questions you have. Gives extra credit opportunites, like FIVE POINTS added on to your final average just for not missing any class. Fill out the study guides before the day before the test so you can ask him any questions- then you know what you need to for the test.
Nice guy, makes going to class interesting.
he's a really nice guy. attendance is mandatory! if you go to class and take good notes, the tests shouldn't be that hard. the essay tho are a diff story. they're hard and you can't really prepare for them. if you've read the bible b4 u r not going to agree with some of the things he says...just blow it off, you won't be tested on it.
Easy class as long as you take notes and show up. If you do one extra credit or never miss a class you get 5 points on your final grade. Tests come straight from notes--given a study guide every time. Tells jokes at the beginning of class..
I hate this man... He has the most annoying laugh ever and has the worst jokes. The tests are not too bad if you study and take notes but now there is a 5 page research paper and he offers little to no help. He has lowered the extra credit for perfect attendance from 5 pts to 3. Not that hard of a class but i would not recommend it.
After the first few classes I dredded coming to class. He isn't funny and the class is his way or no way. There is not middle ground. Don't come in with any concrete thoughts. He will undermine everything you thought.
I absolutely hated his class. Making sure his class thinks he's funny with his obnoxious jokes is more important to him than answering questions students have. He makes condescending comments, and often makes you learn useless information. I would definitely not recommend him for any class.
Obnoxious. I can't stand being in his class. He's pretty easy going on absences he allows up to 6 but I hated the class so much I skipped more that that. A lot of his lessons aren't interesting and he has a cackle laugh that makes me want to scream. Do NOT recomend taking this class from him.
This is a great teacher..Yeah he does have corny jokes but fot the material he covers he does a good job
Nice guy, boring class. Annoying laugh! His tests are straight from the powerpoints and if you come to class and do atleast some of the readings you should be fine.
Just not a good class. More of an ancient hebrew culture class than a Bible class. Horribly boring, a lot of work, difficult tests, and hard to understand ideas. Really, really nice guy who cares about his students, but probably steer clear of the class.
This class was boring and the final essay was difficult to do because he never really helped on it. Considering it was a Bible class we spent a lot of time talking about other religions. Plus, it was a night class, making it hard to concentrate. Lenient on attendance and good extra credits ops though.
Oh Dr. Miles. His class is super boring but at least he cares...? He always tells jokes at the beginning of the class, but they aren't funny...they are those forwarded emails that your grandparents send you. He kinda sweats a lot....um yeah. His laugh makes me cringe, but he's okay. Creeper. But, he knows his information! Plays favorites.
Boring class, creepy guy. The final essay is a killer since he grades hard and expects perfection. Tests are fairly straightforward. Really knows his material, but assigns a ton of reading as though his class is your only class. The class is hard considering it's an intro level course, and most people just take it for the core credit. Steer clear.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Its really hard and Miles is an airhead. Hes only concerned with making himself sound smart. The essays are stupid and he offers minimal help on them. The tests are hard and material is very hard to understand because it is all his opinions and interpretations. Worst class I have ever taken.
This class is very time consuming. Dr. Miles thinks this is your only class. You are required to read before every class "to prepare for class." He is not funny, and I just generally hated this class. I thought I was signing up for a bible class, but it was a really weird view of religion that was mostly a history of Jews.
Dr. Miles is the worst! He expects a ton of reading every night. He doesn't warn you about online quizzes, so almost everyone gets at least 1 zero in the grade book. He grades impossibly hard on the essays (I got points taken off for excessive information and grammar usage that he disagreed with). He is not helpful with questions AT ALL!! creep!!
Worst teacher I have ever had. He grades impossibly hard on the essays, takes dumb points off for things like grammar that he just doesn't agree with. Expects a ton of reading every night. Doesn't warn you about quizzes that he puts online, so everyone gets at least 1 zero. Completely useless when it comes to questions. And, HE'S CREEPY!
Dull as dirt, I could barely survive each hour and a half. He's a really unfair grader and won't hesitate to screw you over at the last minute. Plays favorites in a major way.
Could not stand this man or his class! One of the worse profs at TCU. He is a complete jerk. He is simply not a very nice person or a good professor. This is an intro religion class and he treats as if it's the only class i'm taking. Way too much reading. Tests are hard. Big paper was extremely difficult and unfairly graded. STAY AWAY
Soooo much reading, really hard to keep up. Mostly in pdf format online and difficult to find. Random quizzes over the readings, and you can't see which questions you missed. Tests are fairly easy, straight from the review, but the summary and research papers were awful. I think he graded fairly, but gave unclear expectations. Boring, and not funny
You're in college now, it's not supposed to be easy. He is a good professor who expects 100% effort. Readily available outside of class for questions. Read everything (including his emails!) and take good notes! People complaining about his jokes: Really? You're complaining that a teacher tries to lighten up a class?
A lot of people don't like this teacher but I honestly didn't mind him at all. As long as you do the readings (i usually read 5 mins before class) and answer questions you'll get on his good side. The only text you'll use is the Bible. Tests are not bad...straight from the review. The paper at the end REALLY sucked but it's doable. He's helpful
All I can say is don't take this class at 8 am. Although his tests are directly off of his study guide, he randomly would email us about assignments he didn't talk about in class. Only 3 tests and a paper and I learned alot, but I think there are probably better religion profs at TCU. Attendance is mandatory.
Miles is the worse. Stay far away from him. I've enjoyed all my professors at TCU except for this guy... He's a jerk and unfair grader. Absolutely can't stand him.
One of the worst professors at TCU. He is very unclear on the assignments. A lot of the readings are in PDF and are difficult to read. He sends out weekly emails, which makes me think why did he not just insert that information into the syllabus and save himself and us the trouble. I suggest you take Dr. Grant or someone else.
His tests are right off the study guide. But he is super unclear with papers and group projects, it's really frustrating. You really don't have to read, if you have knowledge of the Bible you should be good to go.
He is a very nice and enthusiastic teachers. One of the more difficult classes I have taken. If you want to be challenged then take him. He made my religious understanding of the bible a ton better. Overall good guy though
His tests are directly from the study guide but he is very unclear with his assignments. One paper is required and you are literally on your own. He sends out weekly emails with assignments he never discusses in class. Attendance is mandatory but worth the 3 bonus points. I made an A in the class but would probably recommend someone else.
not necessarily a bad teacher. by far the hardest class at TCU. all of his assignments are very vague and his main essay basically has no prompt. he grades everything extremely strict and makes test-taking impossible. if you question anything he is very rude. take ANY other class. everyone knows don't take The Bible
Attend class, speak up, and take good notes and it's pretty easy. If you know the lecture notes for the test you will do great. Only 1 paper and it is relatively easy. He is also very enthusiastic to help for anything that you may need. Tries to add humor to class everyday
This class is easy if you go and take notes and listen. Like everyone said tests are straight from the study guides. But he expects way too much out of his students for just teaching a core class. He's not helpful at all and is very rude outside of class if you have any questions. Assignments and projects are VERY unclear.
Dr. Miles is a good professor. He has his quirks, but his Bible class is a good one. If you have no Bible knowledge and are looking for an easy A, this class isn't for you. But if you're willing to work, with or without previous knowledge, you'll be fine and probably enjoy the class. His study guides are really useful.
I LOVED Dr. Miles! He is an extremley sweet person and his class was very enjoyable. I ended up getting an A which was very do-able but you have to keep up with the readings and put in some effort. GO TO CLASS. He takes attendance every day and it counts as extra credit at the end of the year. I definitley recommend this class.
Learned a lot in this class. Read and do the study guides and you will be fine! Go to class because he takes attendance. Lots of extra credit opportunities as well, so do them! He is helpful and quick to respond to emails so get to know him right away. Very personable so don't be afraid to ask for help! :) I would take him.
Dr. Miles is my favorite teacher I've had at TCU so far. The only book you need is the Bible, but that could be confusing since they're all slightly different. I would recommend doing the mythical dimension paper - it's the first one, so you get it done with way early in the semester, (it's also the easiest subject); Made an A :)
Dr. Miles is a great professor who is always willing to help his students. Everyday he starts out class with a joke or funny story. He takes attendance, and he offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. He always provides us with a study guide before a test. Just pay attention in class, take notes, and study and you should do really well.
Dr. Miles is great and very helpful. The only bad thing I have to say is that he doesn't give you a syllabus at the beginning of the semester with all assignments and due dates. Instead he sends out a weekly email of what is due that week. It's really inconvenient if you try to plan ahead. And caused me to forget and get zeros on some assignments
Dr. Miles is a kind professor. His tests are off of lecture, so make sure you go to class and take notes. My only issue in the class was the lack of rubric for the paper we had to write. Otherwise he is very clear and helpful.
This teacher is not helpful in any way. If you plan on taking the course "Judaism, Christianity and Islam" expect to know all of the material and be able to mind read this professor. NO HELP GIVEN EVEN WHEN ASKED. Degrades students when they ask questions and submit work.
I absolutely hated my time in this class. If you can I would strongly consider taking another course. Miles is no help if you try to ask him questions and bombards you with a bunch of assignments due right around the same time.
I got an A in the class. I didn't put in a ton of effort. I made notecards based off of the study guides he gives, and studied an hour the night before the test. Definitely go to lectures and read for the online quizzes. Not too difficult of a class in my opinion. He got really annoyingslightly rude by the end of the semester though.
Dr. Miles sucks. I thought that I could get an A in this class so I didn't pass-fail it but turns out I didn't. He is not helpful and he could care less how his students perform. He is extremely unclear about all of his assignments and will get annoyed if you ask alot of questions. Avoid this class at all costs.
I took his World Religion- Communities class. Attendance wasn't too bad, you can miss up to 7 without being penalized . Miles is a nice person, but he has his limits. I'm pretty upset that I needed .12% more to have an A instead of an A-. I didn't find reading the textbook to be ABSOLUTELY necessary (except for quizzes), tests are lecture based.
Dr. Miles grades pretty tough. He does give study guides, but there is a lot of information you need to know for each test, and many students in my class complain about how hard it is. Many in my section have chosen to pass/fail it. He is approachable and will have a good conversation with you in office hours or after class if you initiate it.
I love Dr. Miles. He is just so hilarious, and fun! He makes the class so awesome no matter how boring the material may be. Expect group projects and the tests to be hard if you don't put time into studying. You will also have to do 2 reviews on religious sites, and he grades kind of tough on them. Overall, I loved the class though!
This class is hard, you must attend to pass. His lectures in class are what the tests consist of. The homework, reading, papers, and quizzes are sent out in weekly emails. He is a very harsh grader who doesn't explain what he wants out of an assignment well at all. I felt like I took 2 classes in one; his class and an online class for homework.
Horrible teacher. Very rude and inconsiderate. Gave a surprise group project over Easter break. What religion teacher does that? Harsh grader. Makes the class overly hard for no reason.
Assigns a ton of reading, and seems he challenges himself every day to see how fast he can put you to sleep with his lectures. Also is a ridiculously hard grader and seems to act as giving giving out an 100% actually hurts him.
Very objective on his grading. He says you have unexcused absences, but then he just gets his feelings hurt if you don't go and gives you bad grades. Do not take, if he is the last professor left, take it the next semester. This class is torture.
GREAT TEACH VERY NICE CLASS
It's an interesting class, certainly, but the 5 page paper he made us do hit my grade HARD. The tests aren't too bad, but with all the reading and studying required, it's quite draining. You should probably go find yourself an easier class if it's just for the core credit, they are out there.
Super quirky but great teacher! I wrote all of my papers in like 2 hours each. Not really an easy class but it wasn't hard either. I just took notes in class and I was fine!
Dr. Miles is a fantastic professor who makes learning about different religions fun and interesting. He is very interactive with his students and loves group discussions. Easy A if you come to class, pay attention, take good notes, and do the exam study guides before the test.
This man grades extremely subjectively. He makes up his own rules and tells different students in the class different things on what is expected on the projects. I would recommend taking another professor for your core religion requirement.
2018 -- Professor Miles is a really cool guy, he likes to have a fun time in class and makes the lectures enjoyable. You will need the textbook and the Bible. There are online quizzes and homework here and there but it's not bad. The tests are like the review. Its not a easy easy class but if you study you'll do fine
Awful class. Ridiculous amount of work for a silly core class. Grading is completely subjective if he "likes" you or not. Take an easy world religion class... seriously. He gets butthurt if you do not show up to class every single day and if you don't engage him enthusiastically about his class at 8am... Yuck
Phenomenal. However, I did notice grading based on participation and effort. Some things changed throughout the class and I would have liked things to be explained better, but he responds to questions in a timely manner. Ton of Bible reading so be sure to get one you comprehend. Participation, reading, and studying is key. Overall, great class.
Make sure you go to every class (automatic extra credit if you do) and study the study guides he gives you for tests! If you do those things you will do just fine. Overall, Dr. Miles is very qualified and is more than willing to help if you ask.
Dr. Miles makes the class fun and interesting. In my opinion, his Bible class is pretty easy. He has "Funday Fridays" where everyone has to say a joke, and then he says a typical dad joke. He also knew everyone's names the first day of class before you even met him. He's super nice and will like you if you participate and ask questions.
This class was hard. He gives so many random assignments and definitely picks favorites. It isn't clear how he grades or what he expects from you. The assignments never had concrete instructions and were too open-ended. He tried to make the class fun but the amount of random and useless assignments makes it not worth taking.
Dr. Miles assigns lots of assignments and readings without clear instruction. Does not care about his students and believes his class is the most important thing in your life (esp during COVID-19). Instead of trying to understand the struggles of students he simply believes they are lazy. Would not recommend.
Dr. Miles was really fun to have as a religion professor. There is A LOT of reading, but you're going to find that in any religion class. He makes lectures fun and as long as you do the assignments and participate in class you'll do well. His study guides for the tests are also very helpful.
I honestly wouldn't recommend Dr. Miles. His lectures go by fast and my classmates & I were always lost. He assigns various work and projects and would often never tell the class about it. He isn't clear about assignments either. His tests are difficult, even if you study the study guide. I've never done so bad in a religion class until now.
I am usually a grade A student but I did not get that in this class. There was a lot of reading and studying and it was still very difficult for me. I have emailed him a couple times and is not willing to help his students. A student try to ask a question about the study guide one time and refused to answer or talk about it.
Assigns a lot of reading but it isn't very time consuming since they're short passages from the Bible. Only two tests and a final so make sure you're well prepared. He's very friendly and understanding and likes to have fun in class. There is also a lot of homework but it ties into what you are learning in the next class and the reading.
This course was one of, if not the hardest class I've ever taken. Professor Miles was really rude and would not answer questions regarding unclear directions he gave for group projects, which lead to the head of religion department getting involved. I strongly recommend you take any other religion professor.
Took this class but did not realize it was for WE. Would have gotten a 4.0 if I had received just .20 higher. A little salty but he's a nice guy. The ending 12-15 research paper is a lot of work and he grades a little harder on that than others.
Important to actively listen to lectures in class in order to be successful. He is kind, but remember to check weekly emails and syllabus to stay on top of readings and heavy course load. Although there is no participation grade, he appreciates when you do. The homework load is heavy, and the quizzes/tests can be difficult if you haven't read
He is nice professor in class but literally has no compromise. He assigned each student to go visit a mosque and did not mention it once in class and then the due date comes and apparently I was supposed to submit a field trip form a week before and there was no chance for me to even receive credit.
Don't get me wrong, this is a HARD class over the Bible, but if you're willing to put in the work by reading, studying for at least 5 hours for exams, and participating in this class, it IS possible to get a good grade. He grades harshly and exams are all based on lectures, but he pushes you to be a better student and Christian knowledge.
