This course is totally based on the five exams. There are no homework or quizzes. Attendance is never taken, but if you miss a class you will miss a lot of notes. These are usually big lecture hall classes. She goes over information quickly and the exams are about every 3 weeks.
Five exams with no quizzes or homework. Final is not cumulative. She explains things fairly well but moves fast to get through the material. Get the optional coursepack! It helps tremendously with taking notes.
I am extremely satisfied with this professor. I would take her again if I had to. She does have a thick polish accent but understanding her was never an issue she just talks fast on occasion. She is always willing to help and most of the people I talk to received above a B in the class. Overall fantastic professor.
This class was challenging because your grade is based solely on five exams. It is a lot of material in a short amount of time. However, Professor Lanier teaches it well. She can be blunt, but if you ask questions and pay attention, you will do well.
The class overall is based on five noncumulative tests, so it's crucial that you do well on them. She does have a thick polish accent, but it didn't deter from understanding her much and she would clarify if need be. I would take her again as she did explain things well and is available to help when you need it.
I was very satisfied with this professor. She's straight forward, clear in her expectations, no surprises on exams. You've got to study hard and go to lectures cause she basically covers all that you're tested on.
Starts off slow delivering information at the beginning of the semester then speeds up very very fast. Not very clear about which info will be on the exam vs. which is supplemental to help your understanding. Kind and helpful professor but you'll want 2b sure to make a friend to help tag team the notes. Tip: try and label the diagrams before class
Lanier is a decent enough professor, but little more than that. She will read directly from what is on the slides, which leaves little room to take notes that you don't already have in your workbook. If you are like me and you learn better through extensive note-taking, you may want to think about taking another professor. If not, she will do fine.
Worst lab instructor ever. Do not take her. English is a second language for her and she constantly contradicting what she says. She doesn't know how to use the lab equipment and will tell you your results are perfect but then will mark you down for your so called perfect data is wrong. Most worthless prof ever.
Her accent is not an issue and she is laid back and somewhat funny. The NERVOUS SYSTEM is very difficult in this class, study up. You will be fine if you can't find a better prof for this class. Make sure you attend somewhat regularly so you can learn what you don't have to know in the booklet.
Do not take this professor for BMS 250 lab. She is incredibly unclear and does not teach the information. You can get a good grade by studying from your lecture notes, the text, and such for the weekly quizzes but if you actually need to have good comprehension of the material do not bother taking her. She is nice enough but not a good lab prof.
nice person. accent not an issue. Tough grader! She takes an already time consuming class and makes it worse by being unclear. Totally phoning it in. Compared my lab question responses to a friend in another lab- they got all of the pts and I missed some even though we had almost the same answer. mine was more detailed but not enough 4 her.
Professor Lanier is a hard grader but ultimately very fair. She clearly tells you what is on each exam via the outlines in each section. She does move very fast but can be found during office hours to explain if unclear on concepts. The workbook is used every single day for literally everything. The textbook however, is never ever used.
Professor Lanier was not very helpful but her exams were pretty straight forward. Not great but not horrible I suppose.
Good teacher, sassy sometimes when responding to questions, wish I knew what her accent was. Pretty easy class, just study (from the workbook which is all you'll use).
The workbook is all you need. She gives extra details in class that she will test on so go to class. She's decently helpful. I've heard that her office hours are helpful.
She is unclear and does not teach the information. When people would ask questions she would get mad and sassy. Terrible teacher. Makes an already hard class more difficult. Do not take this professor for BMS 250 lab.
As long as you attend class, you should be fine. Before exams, she answers questions. As long as you study, you should get a decent grade. She helped me understand things I never really understood in BMS 202.
A hard class overall but a good professor for it. She is a helpful teacher, if you have any questions make sure to ask. Only need the workbook for the class and the tests come from everything in the workbook.
She is the best lab professor I have had on campus and I strongly recommend taking her class.
This is definitely a weed out class. If you do not attend lectures you will NOT pass with a grade able to qualify for Cadaver Lab. Her tests are based off of the way she thinks, like messing up the order of the multiple choice to trip you up. Minuscule details that can take a good grade to a bad one. Studied 2-3 hours a day.
Lanier is such a sweet lady. She may seem to come off as snotty, but she is super kind. She wouldn't let me leave her office hours until I understood the material because she wants her students to do well. She explains things very well.
The class is pretty straight forward - there is no attendance taken but it would serve you best to go. Lectures can get long but hang in there. You get what you put into the class. Don't waste your money buying the expensive textbook I didn't open mine once - if any thing get the online one. I would recommend this teacher!!
The accent on her is to die for. I loved this teacher, me and her really formed a bond, and she knows her content well, but sometimes language barriers did get in the way. All in all I would definitely take her again, she really enjoys inspiring students I could tell by when I went into her office hours and the A is there if you work for it.
Her class was pretty easy! Doesn't matter if you skip class, more than half of the class did. She changes the days of her exams often and gives away questions to the exam during lecture. I thought I was going to get a B in the class but with one extra credit worksheet it changed to an A.
She uses Connect for quizzes, so you actually need a subscription. Your grade is based on 5 exams and open-note quizzes, but her exams are easy. She doesn't post her lectures on Blackboard, so going to class is a must, plus he will often tell you exactly what to study and what will be on the exam. Overall, GREAT professor.
Her exams were tough and her accent makes her hard to understand at times. Decent professor.
She was very straight forward with her class and exams. Exams were composed of her lectures and powerpoints. She doesn't post her powerpoints but you can buy a lecture outline which is directly where she works from with the images and notes she uses. If you put in the work your grade will reflect not a hard class by any means. Take her!!
Straight forward class, however she often confuses what she tells different sections and most of the time you end up with material on the tests that you've never heard of. Textbook is only needed for the online portion of the class, and everything else is pretty straight forward. her accent is sometimes annoying but you get used to it.
Professor Lanier although she is a nice lady she is not exactly my favorite prof. She was slightly mean to me when I went into her office hours to ask for help but if you show effort in her class you will not regret it. It really helped to read over sections out of class to keep up because she goes through material fast.
Very straight forward lectures. The class may seem like a high school health class. Material is not super difficult and she is clear when she lectures. If you always attend lectures and take good notes and just read over the notes, you will do fine in her tests. Class is not super difficult but some work is required to receive a good grade.
Prof Lanier can be very confusing in the order/way she presents the material so paying attention and going to every class is key. About 90-95% of her test questions are things she talks about in class and she tells you which sections of the chapters she's skipping to prevent excess studying. Go to class and study and an A isn't hard to get.
Sometimes the way she presents the material gets a little confusing and seems to be all over the place. Goes through the powerpoint slides rather quickly, so make sure to keep up and pay attention. She doesn't post the slides online which is a little annoying. Other than that, the course itself was super easy and she wasn't a horrible professor.
Speaks with an accent. Stutters constantly. Does not follow lectures well, ie. speaks about things not on powerpoint slide. Does not provide powerpoints. Have a question? She'll tell you to read the book for the answer. Worst professor I've ever had.
I took this class as a gen ed and, for the most part, didn't mind it. Professor Lanier really cares about what she's teaching, which helps make longer lectures easier to tolerate. I personally didn't use the textbook, but you have to buy one if you don't already have access to McGraw-Hill in order to complete the assignments
She is very very intelligent, she does have a slight accent but it is definitely not a problem. The exams are very fair and easier than you would expect based on the lectures.
Professor Lanier is a decent professor and her class was fairly interesting. Sometimes her slideshows are all over the place and it can lead to some confusion. Get ready to study and memorize diagrams.
Honestly, she is Polish and it is sometimes hard to understand her. I did not like the way she set up the class. we flew through the material and had 5 exams, which meant we were taking one more exam than the traditional GVSU course. there are no other grades besides the exams and small little quizzes. She does post extra help info online.
She is a smart lady but she goes too quickly through her lectures and expects us to learn everything on our own. Going to class is mandatory as she does not provide any lecture notes online. This is tough because you are constantly copying down material during lectures and missing important details she only says out loud that could've been helpful
Prof Lanier is extremely helpful when you ask for help. She does have an accent but it never bothered me. Her tests are very fair and organized, however you need to study in order to do well on them. She posts learning tools on bb to really help you understand what is going on. Very nice lady, would take her again.
Professor Lanier clearly knows what she is talking about. However, she does not post any assisting materials online (including her lecture notes) and the class lacks a general structure. There are not many opportunities to make up points so one C on a test essentially ends your chances of an A.
Lanier was a pretty good BMS 251 lab prof. You had to show up for the lab but for the activities we would do, we could be done 45 minutes early and she would force us to sit there and do it over again just for fun. Her quizzes also seemed much harder than what my friends had bc we mostly had written answer and they had more multiple choice
This class was pretty basic of non-science major. Couple of exams and online homework. Often, she would take attendance if she saw more than a couple of people walk out during the lecture.
I had her for a BMS 251 Lab. She was very rude to students and when people would ask questions she would make them feel dumb. She graded very hard. I ended up with an OK grade, but it was no thanks to her.
I did end up with a good grade in her class, but only because I went to her office hours for 1 hour each week. Although she make objectives for what the weekly quizzes are supposed to cover, I had to ask many clarification questions on what we were covering. Make sure you know the answers to all of the questions in the lab manual before the quiz.
Lanier is one of the worst professors I have ever had. You do not get the power point, she is an extremely fast talker, with a polish accent, so you miss half of the things she says and especially the stuff she is testing you on. Only graded by 5 exams and 5 quizzes. She also expects you to teach yourself out side of lecture. Do not take her.
Not only is she the rudest professor I've ever had, but she teaches inaccurate information (uhhh I'm pretty sure epi and norepinephrine aren't the same thing!!!). I took this class for a second time to bump my grade up and keep a high science GPA and I'm lucky that I didn't need someone to explain things. She's horrible. Take Bender.
The course itself is not very difficult. Attending lecture and reading the required book will be sufficient to get the grade you want. The syllabus is direct and you know what is expected. There is a language barrier with this professor. You can certainly understand her but the explanations can be often unclear. Read the chapter summaries to help.
This professor did not make it seem like she was accessible for help outside of class. When students asked questions in class she made it sound like the were stupid. The class is based solely off of tests and quizzes. She teaches from a powerpoint consisting of diagrams but she doesn't ever post them so make sure to take notes of what she says.
She is hilarious and is a pretty good teacher. As long as you go to class and take notes the class is easily passed. She is super sassy if you ask her a question that was just answered or if she has it in the syllabus so read the syllabus.
She is one of the better professors that I have had so far. There is a lot of note taking, but she tells you exactly what to write down on each slide. Also, she doesn't post the notes online. The tests are all multiple choice. The last two tests had extra credit on them which boosted my grade significantly. Overall, a pretty decent professor.
Must learn everything outside of class, but have to go to class to get the notes. Not clear as to what to study for a quiz or tests. Not understanding in case of emergencies and hardly helpful outside of class in general. Treats people as if they were dumb when answering questions and forgets we are just starting out learning subject matter.
All she does is read from the slides, going to lectures was honestly one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. It felt like a waste of 3 hours every week. It's pretty easy material, it's just like a tick; constantly annoying.
Randomly started taking attendance in the middle of the semester. Material/Assignments are easy. A little unclear about expectations and criteria.
You can tell she is really caring and a good person at heart. But, teaching is not her thing. Her tests are difficult, which is fine, but she doesn't give out many "inflation" points like other profs do so you'll end up with a bad grade.
This lab is much harder than BMS 250 but she made it easy to follow with power points & objectives posted ahead of time. There's a weekly quiz and online practice that counts so don't skip it. She explains things clearly and gives good feedback after quizzes to make sure you don't mess up on exams. I liked her hands-on approach the most.
Teaching is simply not her thing. You must attend lectures in order to get notes, and she is not clear about what should be studied for each exam. Grade is based on only 5 tests. She speeds through the material and expects you to learn it yourself outside of class.
Reads directly off of slides, extremely test heavy. All work must be done outside of class. Tests have information covered that was barely discussed in lecture. I consider myself a good student and struggles immensely. Thank goodness I only needed a C to pass.
Good proof, clear on grading and content. I didn't always go to lecture so just completed the outlines she posts on Blackboard along with all the diagrams and was fine on exams. You have to review frequently cause the content is massive but there was no surprises on exam. She often gives hints during lectures & answers questions right before exams
Prof Lanier is fine. She goes over everything you need to know in her note outlines, it is not absolutely necessary that you go to lecture, as you can fill out the outlines on your own with the book. Your grade depends on the 5 exams, which are kind of hard if you do not memorize the outlines. Also be able to apply the concepts to situations.
If you take class with this prof be prepared to teach yourself everything. The only point in going to lecture is to get the notes. She's lecture heavy and not very helpful with learning the material. The diagrams she gives you are often different from whats in our books and sometimes they don't match the ones on the exams. Very frustrating!
She's really good, easy to follow, posts outlines of all her lectures and corresponding images online. She adjusts the pace willingly and uses Kahoot reviews so the whole class can participate. I must say that I was stunned how many people around me would not even print off the outlines or prepare in the slightest for a review.
Office hours are so helpful, focus on the objectives and powerpoint for the weekly quizzes. The quizzes are easy if you know all the material. Would take her again!
The class is heavily dependent on exams which come directly from the lectures, so print off the outlines and diagrams, pay attention in lectures, and study the outlines thoroughly and you'll do fine. She is also very willing to answer any questions you have, though at times she can come off a bit arrogant. Otherwise, good professor.
Professor Lanier isnt a bad prof if youre willing to do everything on your own. Shes very condescending and I hated asking any sort of question because shed make me feel dumb. Id avoid if you can, but if you have no other option shes not too bad.
Professor Lanier definitely makes you work for a good grade in the class. Her exams were usually 80 questions and came from the lectures. She moves quickly and covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. The only grades you get are from exams and online quizzes. She is Polish so theres a small language barrier where some things are unclear.
Expect to read a lot and learn the material on your own. She usually doesn't go over the diagrams in class, which is an important part of anatomy. Don't bother asking a question, she will most likely respond like you should already know the answer. Unless you've taken anatomy before expect a challenge.
Most difficult class I've taken to date. She moves super fast through the notes, so if you're hand writing them you'll miss a lot. There is a lot of content covered every day so its risky to skip class. Tests and quizzes are the only grades. She also has an accent which can make her hard to understand at times.
Lectures are boring and heavy. She moves pretty fast and theres just a ton of info. Read the chapters and skip lecture and youre more likely to do better.
I was expecting a BIO course to be fun and exciting. This professor is extremely lecture heavy and moves quickly. I passed with a C. She isnt terrible, but if you can take someone else, try to.
Prof Lanier lectures the whole time off of slides that are pre-accessible but she makes it super interesting. Everything you're tested on is covered in class and you have about 20 easy questions of homework online each week where you can earn easy extra credit. She takes random attendance 10 times and that counts for a grade. Easy class
Her classes are lecture based and she has a small polish accent but overall you need to come to class because attendance is taken most of the time and if you miss attendance you miss points. Also you do Learnsmarts each week so you need the book. I am not used to taking BMS classes because it is not in my major but the class wasn't too bad.
You think the material for the exam is the notes you take during the class with the provided outline from her, but the exam is on the specific things she SAYS in class, not just the information on her slides. 5 Exams, 5 online quizzes. Homework wasn't bad at all, the exams were just very hard and she's not great at teaching. She's kinda funny.
Semi large lecture and she still had a grading category for participation... The notes are posted online so honestly you only really need to show up for exam days. Her lectures are very boring and useless. The tests aren't too bad except she doesn't give a study guide. The homework is online with clear due dates and the textbook has the answers.
very straightforward and easy class. She tells you everything you need to know and not know for the tests.
Really easy gen ed if you're looking for something without a lab. Pretty much a glorified version of high school health class - if you put in the effort you'll come out with an A the way the class is weighted. Very straightforward
Professor Lanier was good at giving lectures. Showing up to class isn't really mandatory but she does do random attendance 10 times in the semester, which can be helpful in the end. There's an online textbook and homework which is important to do. There's a decent amount of tests but they weren't super difficult as long as you review the chapters.
Absolutely do not take!! Very rude prof, says her coming to class is a privilege. Treats you stupid for asking questions in class but then will complain when no one asks questions. Expects everyone to get A's and just zooms through lecture slides reading straight from them with no real explanation or help to students. Do NOT take her for this class
I dont know about other classes but DO NOT take her for lab. She's rude during office hours and she looks down on you so much. RUDE!!! Shes absolutely THE worst professor ive ever had
I would not suggest taking her as a prof. Her lectures are content heavy and she doesnt really provide resources for her students to do well. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions and does not understand that it takes more than a week to learn content.
She is very good at giving lectures, but her tests are extremely hard. Her questions are straight from the powerpoint notes, but there are so many slides that it is hard to know everything. I would say her tests are oddly specific, but as long as you study hard you should be fine. I wouldn't take this class unless you are good at teaching yourself.
shes the best professor if you need someone to hate. shes a strict grader and her directions on lab reports are unclear. shes by far on the top for the worst professor
I thought she was a good professor. She explains everything clearly. Tells you what you need to get a decent grade. The exams are difficult but if you study not to bad. She makes subtle jokes in class and encourages class participation.
Her lectures can be a bit confusing when it comes to relating them to her exams.
This teacher has been very rude and disrespectful to many of her students in this course. Not only is she not a friendly person, but she will hardly ever work with you to ensure your success in the course and she will pick and choose people she doesn't like and will delibertily treat them unfairly. I highly advise not to take her for any course.
Worst teacher I have ever had and I am not a student that is just mad because I flunked because I actually ended the class with a 94% (A). She was rude, she was hostile, didnt ever want to answer questions or help a student, her online homeworks works about 50% of the time and she doesnt care to fix it. Much more to say but ultimately terrible
If you want to pass, I would NOT recommend this prof. She doesn't explain the concepts in a clear way for people to understand. Her tests feel like they're designed to trick you. She's not very approachable even if you do have questions. The only reason I passed this class was because of my lab prof (shout out to prof. Mullins)
She has a very thick accent that nobody understands, I barely could understand anything she was saying thankfully she has powerpoint, but all she does is read off of them and then expects you to go into depth with it. DO NOT TAKE HER I am a normally very good student and I don't think I am going to pass this class because I have her as a prof.
Really does not elaborate. Can be very intimidating and makes you feel dumb when asking questions. Talks extremely fast, giving you very little time to take notes on the slides. Seems to not care whether or not you succeed in her class.
She randomly put in points at the very end of the semester bringing everyones grade down. She is not clear on what she expects for the paper or exams. Exams are unnecessarily hard given this is a 100 level class. When she lectures she looks like she has no idea what she is talking about and if you email her or ask her questions she won't answer.
DO NOT TAKE..... very rude when answering students on question. Will make you feel dumb if you do not know as much of the material as her. Has trouble getting her point across and will confuse you while doing so. If you have trouble focusing do not take her because she will say umm several times in a sentence and lose you.
Do not take her, she talks quickly and doesnt go into depth on most things. When you go to her for help she makes you feel like youre dumb for not understanding and even then doesnt explain it any better. She skips over things as if we have already learned it and are reviewing- definitely not a helpful or easy professor
Had her for lab & lecture. She was not much help with either. Lab went a little better than lecture but I think thats because I had a great lab group. She makes you feel stupid if you ask a question for clarification and acts like we should already know the material. She also moved very quickly though lectures
First off, if you plan on taking this class with this professor, prepare to not rely on her to teach you the material in lecture. She uses powerpoints and goes through them lecturing every class period. So honestly, you have to go through the slides and take notes and teach yourself and use the online homework to help. It's up to you to succeed.
Lectures drag on so long that information can't be retained. Can be helpful during office hours, but most definitely not over email. Lab reports are harshly graded as she looks for major specifics and the same goes for her quizzes. Exams are much easier than anything else in her class. Overall, not my favorite professor.
Worst prof I have EVER had! She's most condescending person I've ever met, to anyone that ever asked a question. I LOVE anatomy and she made it incredibly difficult and unbearable. For the love of god do not take her class!
For 1 credit, I put so much time and effort into this class. The quizzes/ exams are over very specific information and she does not give out any sort of review for them. Lab reports are VERY time consuming and she grades so tough on them. During class, she was very short with students and not very accommodating to their needs.
Each online homework assignment offers extra credit that helps out a lot. Participation was weird as the amount needed was changed throughout the semester. Tests are easy if studied for. She doesn't respond to emails so if you need to get ahold of her go to office hours. Lectures were posted online so going to class felt unnecessary.
Her presentation and lectures are very well organized and detailed. I was able to miss a few classes and make up my work relatively easily. She is super nice and genuinely cares about her students doing well, so take advantage!
Professor Lainer is one of the best professors I have had in college. I almost switched out of the class because of these reviews and I am so happy I didn't. You do have to study a lot, and the tests contain a lot of information, but they are very straight forward. If you put in the work, you will pass!!
The absolute worst professor Ive ever had. Shes kinda rude and not really willing to help her students. Her lectures are long and boring and doesnt do anything to extra to try and engage or encourage her students. Definitely do not take her if you can help it
She seems like a nice lady at first but if there is ever an issue with your grade on her part be prepared to prove that you did the work, screenshots and everything. I have caught her misgrading several of my things and when I asked her about it she was SO rude and ever ruder when I had proof that it was her fault lol. Better be perfect!!
Her class is so lecture heavy and not to mention the lectures were very boring. The material is tough but she doesn't seem to put in any effort outside of class to help.
I had her for the lecture portion of BMS 250 and was not a fan. At times she was very cold and rude. She doesn't seem to care much about student success. Lectures consisted of her reading off of the slides. Will let you come in and see your exam and try and fight to get points back.
She wasn't the best but to be fair it is a hard class. She made sure that we knew from day 1 that all the work was going to be on our shoulders. She basically just talked through the slides for the whole lecture. She sometimes made people feel stupid for asking questions but sometimes she was nice. Put in the work and you'll be fine.
She just talked through the slides for the whole lecture, which make it so boring and hard to follow along. I would not recommend taking her because I had to read and teach myself this whole class
I understand that things were different this semester considering the pandemic, but jeez this prof didn't help at all. There were no accommodations. In fact, the class got MORE difficult after the switch online. In-class lectures were ok, but the exams matched nothing that the lecture was about. This class wrecked my GPA. Be careful with this prof
I'm taking this class online and she can't grade my assignments correctly at all. I've had to email her 3/4 weeks to correct a score that she accidentally marked wrong on an exam or put in the computer wrong. It's ridiculous, I have to double check her corrections.
Lectures are long and you need to know most everything to do well on the exams. No matter how thoroughly I studied, exam material felt like things I'd never seen. The entire class is her going through her powerpoints, which makes it incredibly boring. She blamed students because we all scored low on one of her exams. Do not take this course w/ her.
All homework and quizzes take place online. Exams are monthly and take place in the classroom. Lectures directly off of lecture slides it is almost pointless going to class.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Extremely passive aggressive and gets mad at students for asking questions. She is super unclear about what chapters are on what exam or quiz so you have hardly no clue what to focus your studying on. Take this class with anyone but her.
One of the worst and rudest professors I have ever had. Doesnt answer questions or clarify whats going to be on the exams. If you want a good grade, you should know absolutely everything. She doesnt curve or offer extra credit and doesnt do anything to help you succeed.
DO NOT TAKE HER She's one of the rudest professors I have ever had. If we get answers wrong she gets super annoyed & says "I dont know why you guys got this wrong. She also refuses to answer peoples questions, she cuts students off mid sentence and she once blamed us for not being able to hear her during online lecture & told us it was our problem.
Professor Lanier is hands down the worst Professor Ive had at GVSU. Her blatant disrespect and disregard of her students is offensive. Telling her students that they should know the content because I said it or not have to memorize shows she is incapable of leading a group of students. I would never recommend this professor, take anyone else.
She's not that bad. She's won't hold your hand through the class. She wasn't the best prof but she did an adequate job. She tries to make real life connections and even throws in a few jokes. If she is your prof, don't freak out and throw out your schedule for a new prof. She's fine. The kids writing these reviews probably didn't show up to class.
I had her for lecture last year and I wasn't the biggest fan. These negative reviews are a little extreme. She's not rude, just a little blunt. Just don't ask stupid questions. She was a great Lab instructor! She cared if we understood the material and was supportive and funny. Maybe not the best lecture prof, but great for lab!
She was very rude at the beginning of the semester and has actually said to us she will not be teaching us and that we will be teaching ourselves. She has also made it seem like we were the problem or we're dumb when we would get wrong answers on a Kahoot by saying things like, "I don't understand why you guys are getting this wrong".
By far the worst professor I've ever had. She clearly knows her stuff and is well educated, but has no social skills that help her to teach her students. Questions from students were for the most part ignored during lecture, and were sometimes simply answered with "this is not relevant" even though we were about to be tested on that material
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS EVER. I have never ever had such a horrible professor or any teacher for that matter. She does not care about her students' learning or understanding of the concepts or the guidelines for the class. She is unclear and vague about assignments and due dates but calls you names and refuses to answer if you ask a question HORRIBLE
You have to teach yourself every topics, Lanier could care less about her students. She won't answer questions when you seek out extra help, she's sarcastic and condescending to her students. She is the least caring and empathetic teacher I've ever had. She often says "not having good internet connection means you didn't prepare hard enough."???
She's not a hard professor, as long as you have some common sense you'll pass. However, she's very blunt and kind of rude and doesn't give good feedback. A classmate of mine had a death in the family and she didn't give that classmate an extension on a quiz. Completely ridiculous. She won't really help if you have questions either.
Its not a hard class, however, she will tell you to fix something and when you fix it on the next assignment she will always find something wrong with it and not give you full credit. She gives you almost no feedback. Im on my last nerve with her. Never take her class its horrible.
Had her for online classes- everything you needed to know was in the powerpoints she shared. LOTS of material, basically memorize everything. She was not always the nicest, but I managed to pass without talking to her much.
I think all of these negative reviews are EXTREMELY harsh! There are not too many assignments or engagement activities. While there is a lot of material to learn for the exams, it is not hard, so if you put the time in you will do good! If you put the effort in this class is a breeze. She is willing to help (especially if you can go to class)
For an online class for a gen-ed credit, it wasn't too bad. Lots and lots of weekly assignments, quite a few exams, and they're taken on lockdown browser that records you the whole time and locks your window, so you NEED to study to pass. Lanier is very sweet though, and answers emails pretty quickly. Very nice prof, standard class.
Her teaching methods were what made this class infuriating. Her exams include a ton of trick questions, she makes us use a lockdown browser, and she would often act rude when we simply ask for help. For a 100 level course, I don't understand why this was so difficult!
Greta professor, shes not rude by any means, just dont talk in class and pay attention.
Super easy class, but it is so boring. She only reads from her power points and does a kahoot every now and then. Only 1 assignment every week which is always so easy and there's always extra credit involved in them. 4 engagement activities and exams throughout the class but they're pretty easy to get a good grade on. Great GPA boosting class.
Horrible at teaching. Throws a crazy amount of information at you and gives little help. Exams dont even focus on the main points, its like she wants us to fail. If you want to enjoy the subject and pass the class dont take it with this professor.
Called me stupid in front of the class because I asked for further explanation about something I was confused on. Not great at answering questions, acts like her class is the only one you're taking, ALWAYS late to class. Find another professor unless you're willing to teach yourself content that you don't understand.
Do NOT have her as a professor, she is very difficult and super hard on grading. Her tests are very hard and often have questions that were not taught in class on them. When you do bad on an assignment, she gives feedback but when you fix it in the next assignment it doesn't seem to matter. She is condescending and sarcastic when you ask for help.
She is very rude and doesnt know the answers to her own questions
She's very rude. Often says wrong things which confuses the class. No social skills and shows up late to class.
There is no point to even asking her questions, she gets mad when you do it. She's probably the worst professor I have had yet, and I wouldn't recommend taking any of her courses. It has become very difficult for me to learn the material that I actually care about.
Very unclear and tricky questions, and rude at many times. A lot of content and memorization for a 100 health class.
This woman is just mean. At first I didn't even want to write a review, but after our last lab yesterday I feel like I should. Prof Lanier is not approachable whatsoever and enjoys degrading the class by saying stuff like "I don't know why it's so hard for you guys to get the answers". Don't bother taking her unless you liked being talked down to!
Professor Lanier lectures exactly what are on the exams, and not much homework is given very often. Some of the other ratings are harsh for her she's not that bad for BMS 100, I would definitely take it again. It was an easy course.
Professor Lanier is nice and lectures the material that will be needed for the tests. She gives clear feedback one her assignments which helps with learning. One negative is lectures can be boring and she is not very approachable for questions. Sometimes she will offer extra credit like Kahoots and games for attendance.
Never take this professor. If it comes down to taking this class with her, wait until the next semester and make sure you get a new professor.
Lectures are BORING, the activities were long, and overall I did not love this class. Prof Lanier is a very nice person but the class overall was just not enjoyable.
Go to the lectures- she gives a lot of extra credit (kahoot). Good at teaching concepts but can be a little vague for assignment instructions
Her classes were all lectures, aside from the testing days. There were 4 tests that were easy speaking as someone who rarely attended class. While attendance wasn't mandatory, she did do small extra credit things which could help your grade. Otherwise, there were a few big assignments and weekly homework assignments that were really easy.
Professor Lanier may seem like a nice person, but she is setting you up to do horrible. Lectures seem very long and boring, she just reads off the slideshow. Every lecture she covers a ton of information. She has exams like every two and a half weeks which covers entire body systems. The exams then consist of trick questions. Do NOT take her
-You arent allowed to see your exam after unless you schedule an appointment with her -Extremely irrogant and will give you dirty looks and make rude comments -Lecture will make you fall asleep -Grade is determine by exams only, nothing to cushion your grade
Not the worst prof I've ever had, but for a 100 level elective class, this was far too difficult. Hours of work every week, with little to no feedback on what to do better. A harsh grader on discussion posts, and has come off as rude when responding to students on more than one occasion.
Very nice professor, but class was pretty boring. Hour long lecture pretty much every time, but the class was not that difficult. You have to do the homework and put in some effort to study, but if you put in like 2 hours a week, you will be fine
just avoid at all costs
Another review on here that said "avoid at all costs" and I think that is the only way to put it. She asked our class a question and nobody knew the answer. She proceeded say "nobody? I hope you are joking" and then scoffed at us and didn't even bother to tell us the answer. Simply put: she is rude, condescending, and disrespectful. DO NOT TAKE!!!
I am typically a good student, and I put in whatever work needs to be done. The material was impossible to learn on time for the exams, and we were expected to memorize loads of info. Her exams were filled with trick questions, and she was rude on a number of times through her emails and announcements. My first B I have ever received in college.
Professor Lanier was a terrible professor. Extremely tough grader, and every class in a lecture.
Professor Lanier is a pretty rude lady but her class isn't too bad if you put in the time and follow her lectures and the lab manual and just know EVERYTHING for her quizzes. If you just mind your business in lab and pay attention to her you'll do fine, utilize the anatomy tutor lab.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She is extremely degrading, condescending and rude. She makes you feel uncomfortable when trying to ask questions and learn.
Quiz at the beginning of each class over previously learned information, very hard to retain information on quizzes. She would stand there and stare until people participated in class but if they got the answer wrong she would single them out causing people to not want to participate more.
She posts all the slides that you need to know. She's very understanding and will explain anything to you during office hours. She replaces your worst exam grade with the average of your practice activities; she will give you points back on exams at office hours. Easy A if you're willing to put the work in. She's one of my favorite professors.
She did not have much empathy throughout the course m. Was hard to follow her lectures while in lab. Was very strict and seemed to not care about how her students did on quizzes or exams. I would not take her if you want to succeed in your medical major
We were kept in class for the full 2 hours which was fine, but she would interrogate every student on why they were trying to leave early in front of the whole class. She also told me and my lab partner that our work was wrong and set it up for us differently, and blamed us for it being wrong afterwards even though we had it right first.
Lanier was an.... interesting experience. some things she would say in lectures could come off as slightly offensive at times, and also to save you the frustration, the extra credit activity content, despite being extra credit, is tested on on exams. I was mainly frustrated with the "extra credit". only take this prof if you HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE.
would never recommend her to anyone. She will give you random assignments in class and give you maybe 10 minutes to finish it for a grade and she won't let you use notes for it when you just "learned" it. The exams are so hard and every person who has 250 says they don't have half the stuff she talks about. -100000/10. Terrible.
Would never reccommend her to anyone. She will give you random assigments in class and give you maybe 10 minutes to finish it for a grade and she won't let you use notes when you just "learned" it. The exams are so hard and every person who has 250 with another prof, says they don't do half the stuff she does. -10000/10. terrible
She does not teach. Nobody learns anything in class. Won't tell you what's on the test, you will waste your time studying, it will be the smallest, hardest things you won't remember or even think of. Rarely homework, nothing to help your grade. Moves quickly during the lecture. Not very nice, will scold you for asking for help/ not understanding.
I will never recommend her. It is impossible to make up points and tests are extremely hard. I studied 5 plus hours every day for the tests in weeks advance and still would get a poor grade. If you go to her office hours she will interrogate you and will not help. This is the worst grade I've had but it was from the lack of education provided.
I would not recommend her to anyone taking this course. She is very condescending and is not open to feedback whatsoever. During one of our lectures, a few students expressed how stressed and lost they were feeling with the material, and the only reassurance and understanding we got was back-handed and frankly rude. Be prepared to teach yourself!!
Do not take her if you want to succeed in your anatomy class. 60% of your grade is based on your exams. She makes you feel incredibly stupid for asking any questions and got mad at us when she asked for feedback and we gave it to her. She expects you to know each of the 50+ slides before going into each lecture. Be prepared to fail!!!!!
The 4 tests you take in the semester are 60% of your grade! the tests are hard and some of the questions you barely even talk about in class. I will say that she gives lots of resources and is very nice but thats really all I could say about her thats positive. Take a different professor!!!
Just rated her for lecture, but guess what... Lab was 10x worse. weekly quizzes that re 15 points each, most questions you dont even go over in class. She gives no direction in lab, all she does is put models or an activity in front of you and then says nothing. First half of lab is just sitting there without any direction. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
We take a quiz every single week and it sucks really bad and lab is super boring and kind of pointless. Prof Lanier is mean but its kind of funny to watch her yell at other students so
To make life easier, only take her if you have absolutely no other choice. You will most likely fall asleep in her lectures, and she doesn't give many assignments, the ones she does give are very hard. Exams are also very difficult
I liked her at first, her class isnt that hard, but the second I missed an exam because I was very sick she didnt like me, I asked her a question on an assigmnent and her reply was "I explained this in lecture, sorry you missed it" giving me no answer. Overall the class wasnt super hard though.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Tests are extremely hard and make up most of your grade. She gives in person assignments on random days the last 10 minutes of class on the new stuff we learned and grades it on accuracy which hurts your grade. Pointless to go to lectures because she reads directly from the PowerPoint.
She was a fine professor and clearly very knowledgeable about the subject. Tests are pretty thorough and tricky and make up a large portion of your grade, so review often. The weekly homework added easy points and she often offered extra credit in lectures. The 3 papers were tedious and long, but she gives good feedback on them.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Her exams are very difficult, and she is extremely rude and not helpful at all.
I wouldn't recommend this professor. She is a very tough grader when it comes to in class assignments, she even graded a Kahoot game off of accuracy. The quizzes and exams weren't too bad, but I studied so extremely hard. Overall, I feel I could have gotten a higher grade that better represented the work I put in with another professor.
She was very passive aggressive and rude to students. Every class activity was graded based on how your assignment looked in comparison to another students, not on universal grading criteria. we had been called dissociated students when she got emails from multiple people addressing the same concern. Not an enjoyable BMS experience.
Lanier was easily the worst professor I've had. She thinks students should know this information from lab, only reading off slideshows with no explanation, you'll have to teach yourself the whole class. She is late to every lecture, gives long assignments with 10ish minutes of class left, and then grades them for attendance. WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
Be prepared to take home useless 200+ question quizzes, and homework. Be prepared for her to lose your exams. DO NOT TAKE HER
Unnecessarily aggressive and rude to students. Assigns busy work that doesn't actually help you learn. Definitely the worst professor i've had at gvsu.
Tough grader, but the exams aren't too bad if you study hard. unstuck AI was a great study tool to prepare alongside the textbook.
I would say that I am one who is very hardworking and dedicates SO MUCH time to this class and while I have a decent grade, it is based on what I have taught myself. Anatomy is not supposed to be easy, but the professor makes it impossible to stay engaged and she will judge you for asking questions. You will never have a break, hope this helps!
As a student that has gotten A's in all of the advanced BMS and BIO classes, I fought for my life for an A-. Rude and unclear on instructions, take exams that are computer generated and not from lecture. Worst professor at GVSU
She's mean, unclear, gives you so much information and little instruction on what will actually be on there. She has unnecessary assignments that aren't helpful to learning. It's the same McGraw hill stuff over and over again. You'll have to teach yourself basically.
do not take anatomy with this professor. she reads off lecture slides and flies through them super quickly. its hard to ask for clarification on things. often gives snarky or rude responses when you talk to her or ask questions. makes you feel stupid. spent hours doing homework assignments and exams every 2 1/2 weeks.
DO NOT TAKE HER. I have a good GPA and usually excel at science-related courses, but Professor Lanier was just rude. Even with her being rude, if the material is good, I can say, "Oh, whatever, and get through it." Nope. There are way too many pointless homework assignments, which she told me after that would not help with exam prep. STEER CLEAR.
Shes a lot. The smartbooks were agonizing (they took 4 hours), and the tests were so hard even with studying. The grading was so wonky no matter what you did your grade doesn't go up. She's also a bit rude and makes you feel dumb for questions and not knowing stuff 2 seconds after she said it. Take someone else.
I don't understand how her ratings are so bad. I had her for both lecture and lab, she was an amazing professor. If you pay attention during the lecture and engage in the material, I promise the class isn't that hard. Also, all 250 and 251 labs are structured the same way; there is always a quiz in each lab on the last week's material.
So so mean and rude. Boring class, reads off of lectures, rude when sending emails, not understanding. Would not reccomend taking this course at all. Super mean professor and boring class.
Long lectures, however very simple concepts. Professor sometimes talks too much about subjects.
All lectures are read directly off of slides with little to no other explanation or examples. Gives matching reviews on subjects that were not covered in class with no answer key to know what is correct. Before every exam there is passive aggressive language on who isn't coming regularly. Professor is also not clear on end of semester exam credit
she is extremely smart but some people are just not meant to teach. she is on a time crunch every single day so if you try to ask any questions in class she will get rude and be snarky in her response. just reads off slides. the first exam had stuff we didn't learn about in lab until 2 weeks AFTER the exam. do not take her if you can avoid it.
Would read off the slides and would skip over information throughout her lectures. Many topics showed up on the exam that weren't taught or even talked about. I've tried emailing her with questions and clarifications, but she wouldn't respond. If you had any questions during class, she would act like you were disturbing her lecture.
Lectures and homework were very helpful to learning. Was very kind and understanding with late assignments!
I learned the most out of this class than any other classes I took my freshman year. Extremely beneficial material towards overall physical and mental health. I see many reviews saying there is unknown material on exams. But if you go to class, pay attention and review the material you will do good. She posts reviews. Otherwise, you may struggle.
DO NOT TAKE! I honestly have no idea how there are any good reviews. Lectures are impossible to understand. Exams have material that was never taught or presented. Gives pop quizzes over material that was just learned in class which no one ever does good on. SO RUDE, good luck trying if you get sick and have to miss class, she sets you up to fail.
She makes it very hard to pass and is unreachable. We were expected to teach ourselves the material prior to it being covered. As far as homework, there was none, which was a disadvantage because you can't use that as a study or grade saving resource. She also said attendance wasn't mandatory and any pop quiz would be EC, but it is graded normally.
I hate her. Her tests and quizzes are unnecessarily hard and they basically make up your whole grade because of her wonky grading scale. She is so rude and demeaning both in person and over email. She actually made me hate science when I usually thrive in school. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Every time you ask a question or are confused about something, her responses are always condescending regardless of if she is in a good mood or not. Genuinely dread this class every single week.
She is honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had. She expects you to know everything right away and her slideshow notes are LONG and CONFUSING and COMPLEX. There is an online textbook but you don't have mandatory readings. Our whole grade was pretty much based on quizzes and exams and there were few opportunities to raise your grade.
She was a much better lab professor than she was a lecture professor, and since it was a smaller group it was easy to communicate with her. She did have moments where she was kind of rude... Also be prepared for your lab quizzes every week- she won't tell you exactly what to study for so you will need to know like everything.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Pop quizzes at random times throughout the semester even if you just learned the material that day . She is extremely rude and condescending, I was in the urgent care and had a doctor's note to prove my sickness, and she still would not allow me to make up my assignment. Don't take her if possible.
She gives out pop quizzes and hardly ever gives you opportunities to raise your grade. Her lectures are very long and sometimes confusing. She does handout worksheets to help your understanding but they are not mandatory. I would never take her class again!
The worst and least helpful professor I ever had!
Exams are your entire grade. Presentations are outdated. Had TERRIBLE images of people with eating disorders, don't recommend if you're recovering. Also, in the lecture about mental health, she didn't care and wasn't very kind to people who struggle with mental health issues. Not good overall.
She doesn't give you opportunities to raise your grades and the exams are really tough. Lecture slides are a lot and they are full of information and really hard to read. If you go to her office hours with concerns about your grade she will tell you to study more.
Her grading scale is very strange.. there is no way to raise your grade. Lectures about food and nutrition were extremely insensitive to those who suffer from eating disorders. You have to do a project about counting the amount of calories for 3 days, and then later reflect your diet and write as to how you can do better...again, very insensitive.
I would not recommend if you would like to pass the class. She was rude to students and seemed to not care at all. Pop quizzes were impossible to pass. She showed how many students had certain grades at the end of the semester and over 60 students were failing. only about 5 students had above a C.
Some key takeaways from this class: she only responds to emails when she feels like it, and if she does reply, you can bet she will be extremely rude, with a clear lack of care, compassion, and concern for her students. Do not take this course unless you like mistreatment.
she was ok. she was slightly rude and didn't really help us with our work. she talks to you like you're dumb and she won't respond to emails.
I really learned to respect Professor Lanier!! She can be a little cold at first, but if you engage in the activities and do the work (and ask questions) she will share a mutual respect:) She is actually really sweet when you begin to talk to her and wants all of her students to succeed!! She has a tough persona, but I ended up really loving her!
