Arrogant yes... absolutely. However, you may have fun getting used to the way he teaches. He detests tardiness, and he can be a fun teacher IF you know how to be sarcastic as he is, and fight back with the same attitude and arrogance. OUTSTANDING!!!!
I think Dr. Brooks has an outrageous sense of humor!!! I was rolling in the isles! English literature is NOT an easy subject, so ANYONE teaching this class would be considered "difficult" or "hard." I loved the classes; I give it "
Overly dramatic. Likes to hear his own voice. Not recommended if you want a coherent professor.
Hard but fair! I learned so much from his teacher and will take him for ENC 1102. I love his sarcastic sense of humor!!
Very helpful--knows his stuff but class is challenging! I learned so much!!
Pompous and arrogant in the extreme. Did not enjoy listening to him or taking his numerous little quizzes.
learned alot but class is hard, hard, hard
Dr. Brooks was the best. Wish he taught math, sure would be easier that way
Dr Brooks is a great teacher. If you are shy like I was, this is a great class to help you get out of your shell. Almost all the class time is in group discussions. Just make sure you read the things he assigns VERY carefully. Very good class.
I HATED his class. He was unapproachable, arrogant, and made everyone who had an opposite opinion from his feel like an idiot. The class would have been easy had he taken the time to realize that there were others besides him in the room.
Has a nice sense of humor. It's obvious he enjoys what he's teaching. The many little quizzes got old but as long as you read what he assigned, it's a good way to boost your grade. Willing to help look at your papers, etc before you turn them in. I recommend him.
Dr. Brooks is a very good teacher. Yes there is lots of work in his class, guess what, if you don't do it you won't pass. He is very straight forward and helps you if you ask. Alot of reading, and be ready to asnwer questions about the reading he assigned.
Very difficult! Didnt really spice up the class at all. kind of dull
He was a great teacher, really enjoyed his class
Difficult grading but he was very entertaining! :)
I liked Dr Brooks personally and felt he was entertaining. However, he seems to enjoy making this subject as difficult as possible. I didn't even know about being able to take my paper to him to check b4 turning it end till almost the end of the semester. I DEFINITELY DON'T RECOMMEND!
Brooks is friends with Senzig (another bad teacher) Brooks in comp 1 was awsome but in comp 2 he was strict as hell! he makes jokes that arent funny, and is in dire need of a shave. I recommend you take him for comp 1 and find someone else for comp 2
I decided I wanted a challenge for comp 2 and took brooks. Big mistake! Being a jock, and he representing the opposite, our personalities conflicted and we did not get along. He asked me one time why I didn't have a journal response and I told him the truth, I was at the gym. He told me that honesty is overated! How pathetic is that!
I had Brooks for COMP 2 and it was horrible. His grading is very unfair. He often starts your papers at a 90 and not a 100 (depends if he likes you or not). Sit in the front row and you will get a better grade. I say try and get someone else for comp 2 if possible.
He worked with me out of class, the guy bent over backwards for me! Learned alot and earned a B.
he is not unreasonably demanding and is very willing to help in any way. i think he's a great teacher and grades fair... almost to a fault. still bitter about being one and half points from an A. i would take his class again and recommend him to anyone who doesn't hate english
I absolutely love Dr. Brooks! He is amazing! He's passionate, so if you don't like English you won't enjoy his class.
He is terrible!!! His grades are based on if he likes you or not and to my dismay, he didn't like me. I am graduating with honors and got F's on my papers!!! He was not willing to help and was not a good teacher of the subject. Do not take him of you want a good grade, take Ms. Williams, I've heard she's great and friendly!!!
If I could give you one bit of information it would be to STAY THE HELL AWAY!!! Guy is an egotistical jerk!! You can work your butt off for him and not miss any class or any papers and he still gives C’s, D’s, and F’s out like hot cakes. Go in another direction or you’ll pay in the long run.
The class is not hard if you read the material and attend. I didn't even take notes, just listened, and did very well on the tests. He will give you constructive criticism on your papers, but not be unfair. He is very lenient about due dates, especially in unforeseen circumstances. I had this class without taking eng 1101, and I recommend it!
I would recommend Dr. Brooks. I thought he was fair, interesting, and he loved class discussion. He never seemed to accuse anyone's opinion of being wrong. I really stink at reading and analyzing Shakesphere, and I still got a B in the class.
He's a very odd guy overall and extremely egocentric. As a whole I would not recommend him as a teacher unless you don't care about somewhat debasing comments and jokes. If you read the material and know what to study (which is the hard part) you might make a "B". If he likes you you'll definitely have an easier time.
um, this man is a dream. not only does he make class hoo-larious and fun, he also challenges you intellectually... something hard to find in OWC teachers.
Hes good.
I LOVED THIS CLASS ! HE IS AN AWSOME TEACHER ! VERY HELPFUL HE WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO CREATE A NICE PAPER
I would NOT recommend this teacher. He plays favorites. Its unprofessional. He was never 100% clear in what he was looking for in terms of papers so it would take a toll on your grade. His jokes are really not that funny, and over all hes just really weird.
This professor is AMAZING!!!
Helpful--lots of bonus points! Drops tests and papers--A. 5% bonus for attendance
Knows his stuff--go to class for the bonus and its ez--took him for comp 1 too
not to many papers--bonus points for going to class. He's funny and helpful. Do the work and get an A
Made me want to write better, luved this prof.! Great class and great bonuses!!
EXCELLENT TEACHER--lotsa bonus points brought up my grade!!!
If you go to class, you will be fine!! I didn't miss a class the whole semester and he added 5 points on my grade!!! 5 points meaning I had a 92(B) and he added 5 points to make a 97(A!!). VERY important to go to class. At the end of the semester he drops your lowest paper grade! Just do the work & go to class and get an A!
Dr. Brooks is the coolest professor I have ever had. He's an incredibly nice person, and he is very understanding and willing to help. He isn't a Nazi about due dates, either. If you have a personal crises, he's very willing to work with you and help you out.
Dr. Brooks rocks, way easier than O'Brien, that witch.
Dr. Brooks was an excellent teacher! I had him for ENC1101 and I can say that it was the class that I looked most forward to. There is alot of work to do and you will be writing alot of papers! But if you are willing to put in the effort then I would definitely recommend this teacher!
I took ENC1102 in a Fast Track. It was very hard. We had Quizzes and Journal due every time we had a class. It's a lot of writing, but if you keep up with it, you will be fine.
Really good teacher. Very helpful and gives you plenty of time to complete your work. If you are good at writing you'll pass his class with almost no effort. Funny personality too!
I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this class, but Dr. Brooks made it very interesting. It is a lot of reading and writing, bu Dr. Brooks is very helpful and will work with students. I would recommend him to anyone that needs english classes
If you attend class regularly, do the assignments, AND he likes you, you'll probably pass. He has a weird sense of humor, isn't really that funny, and he isn't very clear about what he wants done on certain papers, but he's quick to hand out C's, D's, or F's. Didn't help me out a lot either. I wouldn't recommend him for Comp 2.
This teacher is no good stay away
He is an excellent professor with the positive qualities that I look for in a professor, without those that I avoid. He has an excellent sense of humor with the ability to laugh at himself and the subject matter. He's also able to hold class discussions about politics, racism, and sexism without the deterioration into chaos that often occurs.
I really liked this professor but he is very unfair and unwilling to work with a student if they have a problym. I had a A in this class until the research paper and I had problyms with MLA format that he did not even attempt to even go over in class. Do not expect him to be fair if you have a problym. Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!
Very hard, he expected you to do your work. You must read, and analyze the work. I thought my grades were fair. I barely made an A, gave it all I had! I did enjoy his quirky sense of humor, and he did completely go over the readings! Can't say if I'd take him for anything else, very hard...
Dr. Brooks is a great teacher, he is very interesting and his sense of humor is one of the best. He does expect you to read the work and his grading scale is odd, but if you just follow MLA format you should pass his class easy. He had a bunch of rough draft workshops which give you 50 points for having a rough draft.. I passed the class with an A.
Great at engaging class into the readig material, work load is more focused on teaching the material (in a most comic manner) than busy work. He is strongly recommended.
He was really funny but he was very hard and a harsh grader for your papers. If he likes you, you will probably make a good grade but any little grammar mistake will be counted against you. If you show up on time everyday then you should maybe make a B I worked hard for a 79
Dr. Brooks is a fantastic teacher. The course is difficult, but he is very willing to help. He clearly knows his craft, and his class is always fun. He makes the boring nature of grammar a lot more interesting. I definitely recommend him :)
Pretty decent guy. He will work with you if you show him you are dedicated.
Thoroughly enjoyable! Completely professional and objective instructor. He accepts your interpretation of literature as long as you can support your thoughts. Tests are short essay, m/c vocabulary final, 10 short writing assignments, 3 essays. All class time is class discussion on reading assignments. The most enjoyable class i have taken.
Wonderful teacher! For everyone blaming the MLA format for their bad grades, the Bedford Hndbk is required for the class. He has posted office hours 10 hrs/wk if you need help and is MORE than willing to answer questions. He loves to teach and loves his students! Great sense of humor. As long as you keep your papers interesting, you'll get an A.
Fantastic teacher! Though it can be a little bit boring sometimes, he tries to keep everyone awake. Great personality, and more than willing to go out of his way to help. STICK TO THE RUBRIC for the essays, though. A forgotten quote will give you an automatic D or lower. Overall, awesome teacher. I highly recommend him.
It had been a long time since I had spent a day in a classroom. Went in with the jitters...He put everyone at ease. Come to class PREPARED. Must do the reading a writing assignments. They are not too bad, just time consuming. Enjoyed it and would recommend.
Took this class online. It wasn't a hard class, he is just a hard grader. Still ended up with a B.
The class is pretty easy and provided you do the readings, you should do fine. Brooks has a SUPER bizarre sense of humor that always makes class interesting. He's a pretty easy grader, assuming you did well in English before taking his class.
Dr. Brooks was b far the best english teacher ever. He is very easy and will basically give you a 100 on every essay if you show up on the essay work days. Homework is very easy readings. He is also very funny and really good with the students. Taking him would be the best idea ever. You will NOT regret it for a second!! TAKE DR. JON BROOKS!!!
Great English teacher. If you do all the work, it is an easy class. There are many writing activities and essays and he drops the lowest scores so you have many opportunities to have a good grade. He is also very funny.
Lots of Reading! Very Funny Professor with Tons of Enthusiasm! Interesting topics!!! He knows his stuff and really wants his students to be well-rounded!
Excellent class. Everyone who is complaining about MLA format sounds ridiculous. You should know MLA format in high school. And if you don't, the Bedford handbook is required for the class. Great teacher and gives very prompt and relevant criticism.
Dr. Brooks is by far the best English professor you could take at NWFSC. I don't care what anyone else says, he is very fair and willing to help. He always explains what he expects from you. TAKE HIM!You won't regret it. He does expect a lot but nothing you can't handle. If you really want to prefect your writing this is the man to take.
GREAT professor! Super funny and very easy to listen to. Ridiculously helpful with grades and going over your essays with you. Gives tons of extra credit opportunities. I don't see how anyone could manage to not get a good grade. Highly recommend his class.
Pretty awesome professor! He is easy to relate to and has a good sense of humor. His essays were boring but I made I survived. Be ready to read because there are a couple of long reading assignments. Also, read in depth because he will give quizzes on reading assignments that tend to be detailed. Overall not too bad.
Best professor I've had! Everyone told me not to take him but did and am so happy about it. He loves his work and makes it fun to learn. There is a good chunk of work but isn't very hard. He's so funny and animated it makes me want to pursue a career in english.
I don't really mind Brooks all that much. He was a tough grader on the papers though and disregards any opinion that is not the same as his. On the papers, I didn't get a lot of good feedback, mostly just rude comments. Other than that, the class was bearable and he seemed to be a decent guy in the class.
Dr Brooks is hilarious and gives a great lecture with plenty of discussion. The readings and assignments are not optional but you do get to drop the lowest 3 quizes and assignments. You also get to drop one paper. I would definitely take him again. He is a great teacher who really wants to see his students succeed.
Has a sense of humor which lightened the class a bit, but be prepared for a bunch of reading assignments. He gives you a packet at the beginning of the semester on all the papers you have to write each day before class. Although it is not a hybrid class, most of your assignments are due on D2L and weren't discussed in class.
For all you people on here talking about too much work, get over it you are in college. Mr. Brooks is an amazing teacher and will do everything he can to work with you. His grading is very nice because he knows the students are not professional writers.
I'm not a good writer, but Professor Brooks understood and I passed his class with ease. The online portion is about doing book work, discussions, and writing papers. As with common sense, don't cram the papers in one night. He is also critical about your grammar, which has helped me become a better writer. I would take his class again!
we had 3 papers. he gives specific handouts on prompts & what he wants. Quiz every class on reading so DO THE READING! we got to drop 3 quizzes and one paper, no make up quizzes(!). he's funny and definitely participate in class. He also is not forgiving on close but not correct answers to quiz questions.
Although he is a good teacher and was clear about his instructions, he gives awful feedback. Drafts are required for major papers and instead of critiquing them on grammar, spelling, etc. he chooses to voice his own opinion on the topic itself. The class is a breeze if you don't overdo the assignments.
Brooks is a great professor if you really want to improve your skills in reading/writing. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not it. Each quiz is allowed one note card, but the information he asks is so specific that it's hard to prepare for it any other way than reading the selection once or twice.
If youre looking to improve your writing skills, I highly suggest taking Dr. Brooks! He has very detailed information on each assignment. I had no confusion whatsoever. His online class consists of discussion posts, 4 essays, a final essay, writing activities (reading a story out of the textbook and writing two paragraphs).
He's cool. He was available when I needed help revising my papers and was glad to do it. The reading quizzing were annoying and difficult, but they don't matter that much towards your final grade. He's sorta crazy but funny too. I'd take him again.
Dr. Brooks' class was challenging to say the least. There is a lot of reading that you must do if you hope to pass any of the reading quizzes; simply going on schmoop or grade saver will not cut it. Dr. Brooks grades strictly, however, he is always available to help with corrections, editing and any other questions you may have. excellent class!
He is an amazing teacher that will always talk to you during his office hours, and he really teaches the material. As long as you pay attention, actively communicate with him and work hard you will definitely get a good grade in this class
For ENC1102, Brooks gives 13 quizzes, 3 papers, discussion posts, a research paper, and 3 tests. He will drop 3 of the lowest quiz grades, and 1 paper. His lectures tend to go back and forth from real life situations into the literature. And he gives grades for effort, but will criticize your paper to death to make you a better writer. Good prof
Dr. Brooks is a fantastic instructor and a great person at that. His syllabus was organized and the grading criteria were clear as glass. The quizzes are reasonable, and the papers were graded fairly. The short answer tests require some studying, but nothing crazy. There are some real valuable lessons in the words he says: pay attention.
Dr. Brooks in incredible. I took him for ENC 1101 and his wife, Amy Riddell, for ENC 1102, and he is so caring, kind, and will give very helpful feedback. He is just like his wife. Definitely take him for ENC 1101!
Great teacher! Struggled through ENC1101 with a different teacher, but loved ENC1102! Online class is mostly reading the textbook and responding to the literature, a few analysis papers, and a couple of tests. Great and encouraging responses to papers, and easy to communicate with through email (especially through an online class).
