Difficult class, spacey at times, very very nice guy, does not ever take attendance...ever, grades with a great scale and gives lots of partial/extra credit, would recommend to take for math
the class itslef is not hard, but the teacher makes the material a little difficult to understand. as long as you do your homework, you wont have a problem. he will give extra credit quizzes that count for a lot... uh.. 4 tests and a comprehensive final.. good luck! he's willing to help outside class too!
class is easy, he's a little difficult to understand sometimes. 4 tests and a final, if you do better on the final than one of your tests, he replaces the test with your final grade. gave a quiz or 2, but we asked for it and he gives you A LOT of credit for them. willing to help outside class. his notes are easy to follow, doing the homework helps
Very easy, great reviews before tests.
Dr. Corson is very easy to understand, TRUST ME. As long as you do all the homework assignments he assigns, you should mbe in good shape.
Great teacher, he gives quizes that are purley bonus
4 tests and a final. No homework grades. No attendance. Only 2 quizzes but they were for EC. 3x5 notecard on exams. Make well use of them. Tests will be easy if you study your notes and have good cards. I would take him again.
Not a bad teacher, he's a little spacey, but his tests are reasonable and attendance is optional. I went to class maybe 10% of the time and ended up with a B in the class, but I'd suggest going to class! EC quizzes are a must!
Great Teach...The Cal III material is very interesting, it applies everything...note: take PH 105 with it, you will benefit! Note Cards are used on each of 4 tests and 4 note cards are used on final! All 4 tests were easy! But finals was rough...maybe because I had Quant and Organic too...I was mad that I didn't get an A+.....Take him if possible!
Wonderful teacher. He doesn't care if you come to class, and as long as you take notes while you're there and do the practice problems, his tests are easy enough. He also gives partial credit, extra credit quizzes, and is always there to help!
Great Teacher! Very helpful! Takes one day for review before each test and also sends out a study guide a couple of nights before. Great partial credit if you attempt the problem. By far one of the best teachers ive had for calculus! take him!
Great teacher! There is no one better for Cal 1 at Alabama. His test don't try to trick you and you can make an A on each one if you study. Gives bonus quizzes worth a lot of points, and the final was very easy. He is also a great guy who explains the material well. I strongly recommend him.
Dr. Corson is so nice and is willing to help with any problems with homework or if you just aren't getting it. He gives extra credit quizzes and great partial credit (you can miss the problem and still get 9/10 points for it!) I would reccomend Dr. Corson, but if you haven't had cal before it can still be challenging.
Best Cal I teacher at UA..he gives extra point quizzes that are worth a lot and he doesn't put the really hard problems on the test...do the homework (which he gives you ten tries on each problem with no penalty) and you will do fine...I got an A+
Great teacher!! Very clear, and more than willing to help with anything!!
Dr. Corson is a really nice man but sometimes isnt very clear when explaining. He works tons of examples during class and he no longer gives out "bonus quizes" like people earlier said. His tests are very simple since you can't use a calculator but I could see this class being very difficult for people who haven't had calculus before.
an easy course with him
hes super easy and a babe
Dr. Corson is a good math teacher, his English is great. He explains as much as he can but, sometimes tend to leave out an explanation for the tougher problems on the homework. He tries to give some hints (examples) of questions on the homework. But he is cool all around. Dont' get sidetracked by his clothes. =)
Good professor! Very helpful and an easy class. Teaches all the material needed for the tests in detail.
Dr. Corson was a great teacher. I understood everything he taught, and he is more than willing to help if you need it.
Very unattentive in class, looks out of it, tries to help, but gets sidetracked too easily
Great teacher, but you really must have some idea about 125 before you get to his class or you will be lost. He is really good at this level of math just be sure you are as capable.
The class is very good! If you do the homework you will do well. He doesn't grade the tests hard and he is available if you need him. He will help you if you need it.
The material in this class can be difficult, but Corson does a good job of working examples that are useful on tests and homework. He gives study guides that are quiet useful on the tests.
He is a great teacher! very clear and works some good examples that you will see on homework and tests. his review is just like his test. He's always willing to help and his is pretty funny guy
Calculus is not an easy class but this professor really helps. His notes are clear and examples really help. If you attend class you will do well
Great teacher! He is very helpful and clear. TAKE HIS CLASS
Great teacher! Take this class. Lectures aren't too exciting, but that's what you'd expect from a calculus course.
This class is fantastic. I've consistently heard Calculus II is the hardest math, but Corson makes it very easy to make an A. The homework is hard enough to make you learn the material (yet still manageable), and the tests are the simplest versions of what we learn in class. Gives practice exam worth lots of extra credit that is just like the final
One of the best professors I have had. Very very clear. Tests are like the study guides.
Great teacher. Easy to understand, straightforward tests that are very similar to the exam reviews. Tests on the easy versions of the concepts, no surprises on the tests. Take him!
Class material was incredibly difficult however Dr. C just wanted us to focus on the basics. Tests were hard but due to the material, he really did dumb them down. He is a nice guy who genuinely wants all his students to pass.
Dr. Corson is a great teacher! He goes over each section of material with indepth analysis of each topic. He doesn't bore the class with material that isn't needed. Don't know if it was him or his TA, but the grading was very lenient and helped with partial credit. Highly recommended!
I have had Jon Corson before and he is by far the best math professor at UA. If you get the opportunity to take one of his classes, do it. Notes were clearly communicated and he was eager to help! Tests are straightforward and if you just go to class and take notes, you should do just fine.
Dr. Corson is the best math professor you'll find at U of A. He's intelligent, helpful, and wants you to do well. He gives you a PRACTICE TEST that is exactly like the real thing. Not only does he make calc easy, he makes you learn.
This professor is amazingly simple/smart/nice/understandable. He is very thorough and genuinely does want you to do well. If you do most of the homework and go to class you should get an A. He gave us bonus points on the final if we attended class (10 possible; you're allowed one free skip but a point is deducted each time you skip thereafter).
Brilliant. Very clear and concise. He goes through each problem step by step. One can understand him and he speaks at a very easy to understand level. He made the hardest Math class ever conceived of bearable. Because of his teaching methods, I should pass a class that I was doomed to fail. 1010. As long as you go to class, you cannot fail.
He grades on a 5 point grading scale so 95 and up is an A+, 90 and up is an A, 85 and up is an A- and so on. So that means a 55 is a C- I think. He was very clear, posted notes online and 50-60% of every test was take home. It is a very boring class though, so it is tough to pay attention. Lots of memorization.
This is my favorite class I've taken at UA so far, but I'm a math major so I guess I just like this stuff. There is no mandatory homework or attendance, but 10 free points on the final if you miss one class or less. Also the tests are very basic and straightforward if you just do the practice problems.
I had him for Intro to Linear Algebra and loved him so much I took him again for Calc III. He makes the homeworktests as easy as he can and even though the tests aren't multiple choice he is pretty generous with partial credit. He is a great guy that made some hard math classes pretty easy. Take him for whatever class you can!
Great professor! Just a fun fact, he's head of the math department, so if you want a professor that really cares about you and how you're doing in the class, trust him to be the guy! He writes everything down very neatly and clearly. If you go to class and take notes, passing will come easy peasy.
Professor Corson is the sweetest man and an extremely good teacher. He is very straightforward and uses lots of examples to really help you practice. The tests are very easy and are based off the study guide, so if you practice that you are golden. He also lets you bring a formula sheet which is very helpful. I would love to take his class again.
Best math professor at UA. I posted all of our previous exams and reviews just google search Jon Corson Spring 2016 Math227.
Corson was a great professor. He gave straightforward notes in class. Grade was based 25% on each unit test and 25% on the final, but your lowest test could be replaced by the final if you scored higher on the final. Optional homework each night - I would definitely recommend doing it because the tests were heavily based off of these questions.
Awesome, awesome guy. He really, REALLY cares about his students. His tests are very straightforward, almost exactly like the homework and test reviews. On one test, he gave us the answers to the three hardest problems. He really wants to see every succeed and enjoy his class at the same time.
Super nice guy - lectures and corresponding notes are easy to understand and to copy down into your own notes.
Dr. Corson is a really awesome guy! He also is very reserved, but once he gets used to the class, he has a secret sense of humor that lightens the sometimes Egyptian hieroglyphics he draws on the board called calculus. Sometimes he'll glance over a few things that need more explaining, but he writes really helpful notes during lectures.
Dr Corson is a great professor. The three tests and final were very fair and he assigns optional homework which will prepare you. He is very helpful and his lectures are very straightforward. Just go over the homework problems over and over and you'll be fine.
Dr. Corson is a great person. Tests make up a majority of the grade in his class. There will be A LOT of webassign homework. That being said, do it because it is worth 15% of your grade. The class can be very confusing to follow at times, but you are allowed a formula sheet on the exams. The reviews are a good predictor of the exams.
Corson's lectures are intimidating at first but his style soon becomes easy to follow. He is simply very straight forward. I only needed to go to him for help on two homework assignments, and he was easily accessible and v e r y helpful. 10/10 recommend
Calculus 3 is a challenging subject, but Dr. Corson manages to explain virtually everything very clearly and thoroughly. Homework directly correlates to class notes, and his tests (which make up most of your overall grade) are straightforward and easy to prepare for. I never found myself stressed out because of his class.
Dr. Corson was by far one of the best math professors Ive had at UA. Probability is an interesting class and he doesn't make it any harder than it should be. Three exams and a final all allowing a formula sheet you can bring along which makes the exams much less stressful. Apply yourself and its an easy A. Extra credit is offered in the class.
Take his class, dont skip, do the homework, you will make an A.
Dr. Corson is a very good teacher, though he can be monotone at times causing you to daze off. The material was difficult, however Dr. Corson explained it in a way that made sense to most students. The tests could be tricky, but he allowed review sheets and went over similar questions to the test the lecture before.
Dr. Corson is a great professor. Explains the material in a simplistic way, making it a fairly easy course to understand. Grading and tests are very fair. Gives a review beforehand, and nothing surprising ever appears on the test. 2 short homework assignments a week. Overall great professor, and easy to make an A in.
Dr. Corson is one of the sweetest people you can meet. He genuinely cares for his students and the subject material. The material taught is simple and straightforward, proving math shouldn't be difficult. Attend every lecture and pay attention. Honors Calculus 3 was a breeze with Dr. Corson.
Solid choice for a math professor. He can be a little monotone sometimes, and he isn't the most exciting person but he does know his stuff. Tests are pretty easy, you get a formal sheet. Do watch out for the random surprise question that wasn't in the test review though.
Dr. Corson is clearly knowledgeable, but doesn't appear to understand his student's capabilities. He taught at the minimal level, covering only fundamentals and proceeding at a ridiculously slow pace for a 400-level math class. Take him for an easy A, but math majors might want to consider someone who goes a little more in depth.
He's a good teacher. Show up, take notes, do the homework and you will pass.
Dr. Corson was a good professor. The course changed when I took it, so the transition was awkward but not terrible. You are expected to be able to write proofs, but everyone passed that portion of the class. He teaches well enough for the class to understand.
Do not recommend taking at 8am. The professor gives tests on Tuesdays and usually gives the study guide out on that Monday. He also assigns homework which is due Tuesday, even on test Tuesdays. Usually that homework is on stuff that is going to be on the test which gives you no time to review that material effectively.
Professor Corson is very knowledgeable in his field, and he's good at conveying the main topics. Calc 2 is a rough course, but if you have Corson, you should be in good shape. Side note: for honors, he only does written exams, so if that's not your thing, I'd stay away; he does give a lot of partial credit, though.
He is a fantastic teacher! He can be a little boring at times, but he understand calculus really well.
The absolute G.O.A.T. for honors calculus. Took him for honors calc 1 and 2 and left each class with a good grade and even better understanding of the material. Very simple, informative lectures with tests that include no curveballs and great partial credit. Bonus points for him being a local tennis legend.
Corson is a solid straight forward teacher. If you pay attention in class, the tests aren't very hard if your review for them. His lectures are kind of boring, but not that bad. This dude loves wearing hats, its very rare to see him without one. We covered all of the material even though we were behind at the start. Take this guy if you go to class
Dr. Corson is an incredible professor. Math 470 isn't the easiest course, but he understands that and is very helpful in making sure you know the material. You use the textbook a lot, so it is a must. He assigns homework problems from the book that are very helpful. 3 tests and a final. Participation is part of the grade also. Take him if you can!
Tests are worth 60%, homework took me 4 hours a piece, but he is VERY lenient on partial credit on tests (if in honors with written tests). If you can wake up, he is worth even an 8 am. Spend time on the homework, and develop a deep understanding of the material. He must have curved the final, because he gave me a 99. Corson is a great guy & prof.
Solid choice for MATH 301. Attendance was not required, but it was nice to watch him go over the optional practice problems. His voice can get boring, so take him in the afternoon if you're not a morning person. The class can be tough for some, but he gives a lot of partial credit. He answers questions clearly in class.
Professor Corson is very laid back, maybe too laid back. He assigns homework (not mandatory) and in class he simply goes over the answers. He gives about three quizzes and a couple of tests, and that is all you are graded on. I wouldn't recommend him because there are much better professors.
cool guy, does a pretty good job getting you through the steepish learning curve
Laid-back, but rather dry lecture style. The tests were hard because, well, it's real analysis; not really his problem. Tests consisted mostly of writing proofs, but they were never particularly arcane or complicated, just difficult if you're not used to this kind of math. He applied a nice 3-5%ish curve to everybody at the end.
Like everyone has said, fantastic professor, not much else to say.
Corson was nice but he wasn't amazing. The class was somewhat difficult compared to other math courses I've taken here and there are no review sessions for the tests, which made it hard to prepare but I did well after studying a lot. Somewhat boring lectures but he was receptive to questions. There is extra credit for doing WebAssign homework early
Prof. Corson is a great guy, and this class was not very hard. His lectures can be a bit slow and boring, but if you go to class, do the homework, and study for the tests at all, any student who has passed Calc III should have no trouble in this class. He also posts lecture notes and allows homework and test drops, which is super helpful.
Dr. Corson was a pretty good instructor for Theory of Probability. I found the course to be very boring. He was an easy grader and really cared about his students. I liked him as a teacher but hated the content of the course. Thankfully, this was the last math I would have to take for my degree! I'd recommend taking Dr. Corson for this course!
Lectures were a mix of step by step walkthroughs of practice problems and explanations of new concepts, and in either case the lectures always had an element of engagement. Quizzes and tests were fairly constructed and graded leniently, but I wouldn't say unfairly, rather, an example of Prof. Corson grading by your understanding, not by a rubric.
Corson was an amazing professor. He gave a 25pt extra credit test during dead week, and on top, lowest of three midterm was dropped. Be prepared to do the HW even though its not collected because it helps immensely with exams and quizzes. He's caring and always willing to answer questions. Try to sit in the front because he can be soft spoken. GL!
Go to class as it'll keep you honest since there's not even any homework. His lectures were incredibly sleep-inducing tho so u must fight thru. Grading is heavily test-based with 20% weekly quizzes and 80% tests. Content-wise it is easy-ish and tbh we didn't learn anything we hadn't heard of before. Nice guy, extra credit at the end was fabs.
Very good at explaining concepts and very fair with partial credit on tests. Difficult class so prepare to study, but he provides good ways to do so. Only rough thing is his availability for office hours (may not even be a problem every semester). Just talk to him after class if you can't make his office hours.
He was so generous when grading tests. The tests are worth over 80% of your final grade, but he gives so much partial credit. The content was a little difficult, but it's not hard to make an A. He probably curved the final because he gave me a 100. Also, his jokes are funny, and it's clear he really knows math.
Amazing!! Made Calc II a breeze!! Very generous with partial credit and made an effort to not overwhelm students with homework (still 1-2 per week), the GOAT!!!!!!!!
I loved my time with him, Calc II has a reputation for being a hard class but he made it really digestible. His tests were fair and his generous partial credit carried my grade for sure. Homework is also minimal while still having enough problems to be helpful. Its also very clear that he knows what he's talking about, which was really nice.
Ridiculously easy grader, one of the easiest calculus 2 classes offered here, everything hand graded, not super engaging but lectures are easy to understand
Good man, knows his stuff, but homework is not graded or checked, so its hard to know if you are getting the material or not. Pretty leniant grader.
I'd been warned about the difficulty of this class, but Prof. Corson made a difficult subject into an approachable and accessible one. The only grades are quizzes and tests, but they're pretty easy if you go to the lectures. Homework isn't graded, but it's REALLY really helpful towards your understanding of the material. Overall great class.
Took his class last semester, and he was solid. He may not be the most engaging, but he was able to usually convey topics simply. He was super lenient with partial credit. Calc 2 is a daunting class, and yet, not only was his class accessible, but it also left you feeling prepared for Calc 3.
Nice prof, not very engaging but decent lectures and handwritten notes which are uploaded to bb which is good. Quizzes mostly every week but not terribly hard and he is a verrry generous grader. Some extra credit available. About 338 tho - incredibly boring and don't learn much more than 237. save ur time and do smth more valuable for credit (485).
