Great teacher, pretty easy going. I've only had him for half a semester so far, but I've found it easy to follow the material. Only one project but it's not too hard. I would choose him again for my professor
He is an awesome teacher, ill be taking his other 2 crim classes. hes funny, has awesome notes, takes both sides of arguments, uses the text book, exams are straight forward, and he says what topics are on it, and those topics ARE on it. He keeps you entertained and hes smart. highly recommended. he rocks!
Good Prof. Need to attend class to get the notes. Text is very helful and tests REQUIRE that you pay attention and do the required readings for a good grade.
Hard useless exams, stupid multiple choice questions, he is funny and tries to keep it entertaining but his exams are ridiculous. Found that he marked papers hard and made unnecessary corrections. Didn't open the textbook until the final and it didn't help me. You MUST attend class.
He makes you a study guide, so really, how hard can the class be? Dry material that is made accessible by his hilarious power-points and offbeat humour. A definite reccomendation if you are in the crim program.
great marker!
This prof is sexy as hell!!! And a great instructor!
Exams are BURTAL. You have to go to class inorder to get all the required material for the exams.
Boaring material, great teacher. He tried hard to make it fun. His tests (mid-term and Final) are very tough. I worked hard and got an A, but it wasn't easy. There is 1 paper that is about 8 pages x2 spaced. Worthy of mention: I never read any of the text, this may have made things harder on myself. Really good guy though
A pretty awesome prof overall. Although the material isnt the most exciting, he does make it interesting. Sit near the front, and talk a lot, if your not a talker, even just a couple things here and there, guaranteed a good mark. Tests are pretty challenging tho, be prepared to study!!
awesome teacher. I have had two classes with jon and he tries really hard to make all of the theory interesting. Have to go to every class to get notes and study hard for exams, but he is a fair marker and tries to make classes fun. What other class do you get to watch scenes from Scarface?!
The material for this class is incredibly dry, but Jon does try to make it interesting with sarcastic remarks and movie clips. Somewhat of a hard marker, but as long as you attend class and study, you should be fine!
Jon is extremely condescending. He is extremely hard to approach outside of class. When asking a question in class he has no problem talking down to you and making you feel like an idiot. Majority of our class bombed the multiple choice section of the midterm... which says a lot about his teaching.
Jon is great. I am in another one of his classes and I'm looking forward to it. Attendance and participation is necessary for his classes though (this sucks if you don't like to talk!), but take him anyway, it'll help you! Jon is funny in a corny kind of way, which makes his lectures better than most other profs. Take him if you can!
I had him for both his first year courses, his first semester crim 100 class was okay, but his second semester Crim 104 class was completely dry. It was also the first class I had asked for his help on explaining an exam question, he was extremely condenscending and made me feel like a moron. His participation marks are a joke.
Wonderful prof! I would definately take another class with him. He uses video clips, discussions, notes, and the textbook to help students understand the material.
Jon is a very interesting prof. His lectures are entertaining. You do need to take notes and his exams are based straight from his notes and textbook. EXAM IS JUST LIKE THE REVIEW GUIDE!!! btw, the textbook is the most boring textbook ever.
This professor is so rude, and he looks at you as if you are stupid. If you do not show up to class, do not expect to get a good grade (even if you've only missed two)He is a hard marker, and is very unfair. I would not reccommend him to anyone. STAY AWAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!
WORST prof EVER. I thought I could give him another chance after having crim 104 with him... I WAS WRONG. avoid this prof at ALL COSTS. Not to mention he is so rude and inconsiderate and makes you feel stupid.
He's an alright proff. I never asked him for help and I did fine in his course. However, like someone else has mentioned, his participation marks are a joke. Why does it even matter if we attend class or not? We aren't in HS and we are PAYING for our classes.
This prof is one of the worst I have had. Manditory attendance was retarded for this class, however if you didn't go you didn't get the notes. This prof is strict when it comes to citations and gave zeros to a decent chuck of my class on their papers worth 30% of their mark, including people who used citations but not to his liking.
Heidt is clear in his expectations and covers all his material very well. He has a reputation of being a bit of a hard marker however if you study there should be no problem. If you are an A student and are apprehensive about this class don't be you'll get an A however if you struggle in school you might want to try someone else.
really helpful outside of class, extremely clear about what he wants. Be prepared to take a ton of notes. exams are tough (read the notes and textbook), paper is also hard, but if you go to him outside of class you will get a better mark. I'll blame this on the course itself, but I found the class material really boring
Great prof! his lectures are engaging and its nice when a prof actively wants people to participate in discussion. Like someone else said, he makes corny but still funny jokes all the time and we get to watch scarface, the godfather, and the tupac documentary. In addition, if you work with the study guide you will ace the tests. Also hes super hot!
I was pleasantly surprised with this class. He made classes interesting by using pop culture and though there were lots of notes, it went by fast. Make sure to participate in class. Gives you outlines for the notes, study guide as well
Cool guy, quite enjoyed his class. Not an easy class, but I wouldn't say it was hard either. make sure you participate. Subject matter is really dry, but still interesting. Best part though, Jon looks just like Edward Norton!
I do not like this prof at all, he has annoying habits and he isn't very helpful. With that being said, the material in this course is interesting, and is the basis for other future crim classes, make sure to pay attention. His course consists of participation in a lot of group discussion, a paper and 2 exams. Read the textbook and study his notes.
Loved this professor! Great use of class time and great examples. Jon is hilarious and is more than willing to help anyone to make sure they succeed! Would love to take another class with him! :)
I have never had a problem with an instructor before. But this guy is just the worst. So rude and talks down to everyone. He's really confusing and not very clear even when I went for extra help. I am a 300 level student and took a 100 level course with him and found it difficult and confusing. I do not recommend him at all.
I had this prof my first year in 2010. I have one more year left and I'm still avoiding this prof. He ruined my 1st year of university. I have taken this course in highschool, so I knew most of the material. But the way he taught it was confusing, and did not help in any way. He would talk to you like you were and idiot and didn't know anything...
Classes were thoughtfully planned out. Several in class discussions which are directly implemented to the exams so attending class is a must. He likes to give C's to people on papers so you really have to beyond what's expected of you for a half way decent paper mark (Pretty much have to be a perfectionist). 65% of the class had to re-write papers
My favorite prof ever! Why don't people like him? His dry humor and sarcasm is delightful. If you get offended you're a pansy. Exams are pretty tough I admit. Study his notes extensively. Forget the textbook. Oh and participate a lot. He is strict with participation marks. Fair marker on papers.
He has high expectations for the paper and for tests, but he is very clear about what you need to study! The paper is more confusing because the topics are difficult and vague, but if you ask for help he is more than happy to help! I would make sure not to skip class though, the material isn't easy!
Jon is very passionate about the course material and makes lectures very interactive. It was nice to watch some short movie clips displayed in class to illustrate theoretical concepts. When it comes to writing the paper, be sure to use his office hours if you want to score high on the paper (I got an A-). Exams are fair as long as you study.
lectures are good but tests are very hard, EXAMS ARE HARD and he is a hard marker
He is super difficult, expects you to know how to write a paper. One big paper and two exams.
MUST attend class. His lecture notes are not posted online and they are VERY helpful for study notes and your paper. His paper expectations are high, but he helps during office hours, before/after/during class. He takes attendance and his lectures are boring, but he adds in some jokes.
He is he worst prof out there, regret taking his class he's so hard on tests and marks ur paper like ur stupid... exams are extremely hard. if u take this class, ur gpa will def come down.
Don't expect a walk in the park with this prof or this class. If you work for it, you will do well. Class evaluated on exams, participation and paper. Exams are hard! Study, then study some more, and you will do alright. Exams include: MC (15q's), SA (10?)+ T/F (and Essay (3q's) Participation is mandatory, no cell phones, etc. Tough marker...
Jon definitely will not just give out A's to people who do not deserve them, but if you actually study and put in effort its not impossible to do very well. He clearly explains what he expects from the class, provides very good feedback, and he marks fairly. He is not a walk in the park, but he cares a lot for his students.
great class! clear expectations and exams are from his lectures. Paper is a bit hard but he gives great feedback and fair marker. Would take him again.
Jon was one of my favourite profs. He is a very laid back kind of guy and gives clear expectations for his paper and his exams. He gives hints throughout his lectures but does not post notes online so attendance is necessary and you learn better that way because he gives examples of things that may be unclear.
Hes alright. Lectures are dry, he trys to spice them up but it doesnt really work well. His outlines for exams werent really how his tests went.. his topics for papers were questionable. Marks really hard for the paper. He never responded to my emails .. sucks hes the only prof that teaches 310.
Make sure to attend class as it gives a better understanding AND READ THE TEXTBOOK. His notes are literally his textbook, but the textbook is actually clear and easy to understand. Not that hard of a marker on papers as everyone says he is. His exams are tough if you don't study. Study well and you'll be more than fine.
Good professor, really cares about his students. Lectures can be dry, but power through it and you should get a good grade. Jon really tries to make students laugh and incorporate different types of content to keep you engaged. Exams are a little challenging, does provide a guide and says thats all you need to know but does throw random questions
really nice guy. focuses on lectures and is easy totally to if you need help
Jon is great! He tries to make a theory class interesting with his funny humour and engaging videos. Attendance is mandatory and it is definitely a good idea to read the text since he wrote it. He is a hard marker but overall, I really enjoyed his class. No presentation but the tests are difficult!
I loved advanced theory. The first half of the semester was review of Crim 104. The second half was new material. The paper topics were fairly straightforward. Tests were on the more difficult side but definitely fair. Participation is key to getting a good grade and the textbook readings are a must. Overall, it was was a great class!
I have him this semester for crim 100. So far he has been a good professor and clear about his expectations. Although, he is a bit on the tougher side when it comes to grading.
Jon is extremely subjective, he expects you to know what he's thinking. Furthermore, Jon speaks to his students like they're 5 year olds. Mans is on a massive ego trip, hitting some green would benefit him. Online structure - Assignments every week, 2 exams (no study guide), 1 paper Avoid this clown at all costs.
This was the worst class I have taken and it is definitely because of Jon. He expects you to know what he wants without him telling you. He hardly gives you any information on the paper, other than the typical font and length guidelines. The exams are hard because his notes aren't great. If you have the choice, take this course with someone else.
Some previous reviews are quite critical of Dr. Heidt I would disagree with them. If you put in the effort Dr. Heidt's classes are pretty strait forward, he provides thoughtful feedback and actually takes the time to read you assignments thoroughly. If you make a logical argument in regards to his feedback he is receptive. Exams are open book.
Maybe he is good in class but avoid ONLINE. Horrible attitude, condescending no help and almost no communication. Difficult exams no lectures just useless PowerPoints. Dissapointed how rude and inconsiderate in time of pandemic. No understanding at all. Obviously couldn't make it in policing so he thinks he's a school sheriff. Ridiculous.
25% - paper, 25% weekly mini papers 1-3pgs, 25% midterm, 25% final. His exams were very hard - the midterm average was so bad everyone got curved almost 10%. His grading is very hit or miss - be sure to include theory examples and class material in each weekly paper for full marks. Very accessible thru email and willing to reschedule office hours.
Heidt was not a bad prof; his lectures are interesting and easy to follow. He is, however, a hard marker and some of his assignments were not always super clear. His exams were very difficult with lots of trick questions. Even though it's open book, make sure you know the material very well! The textbook is a MUST.
His exams, worth 50% together are basically pre-determined as a fail, and he indirectly tells you that as well. Worst class I've ever taken.
Bad prof. If you ask him a question and if he thinks its a stupid question, he wont reply. His exams are very tricky, it is a hard borderline pass. He doesnt even know what he wants on the paper and will make you rewrite it and still give you a bad mark. Weekly assignments are annoying n somewhat easy to get good marks but arent worth a lot.
Dont believe the old rates some people dont care and want you to purposely take a class with a prof who isnt good and get bad marks. He is just a terrible teacher. He may be smart and highly educated, but thats only for himself. He is terrible at sharing that knowledge with us and sucks at allowing us to do well. I didnt do terrible, Jon did.
Jon does not care about his students succeeding. Worst prof ever, was very intimidating and would not reply if he thought the question being asked is stupid. Never going to take his class again. It's a hard pass, and you learn barely anything. Do not spend your money on his course, it's not worth it.
The exams seem tricky, most of the things from lectures were not on the exam, also not really identified in the text book. Did not tell us how to prepare for the exam or what to expect. Did not go over the essay assignment at all.
lectures are mandatory but very very dry and uninformative. midterms have no study guide provided with little to no guidance from jon as to what to expect. essay topics are confusing and vague, while jon refuses to help students adequately and remains very egotistical. he offers minimal advice and lacks informative information. i do not recommend!
Jon is a really nice and funny guy. Grade was based on a paper, midterm, final, and 10% for attendance. His exams are extremely difficult and he does not really tell you what to study aside from "read everything". Testable material is anything in the lecture powerpoints, textbook & additional readings (2nd half of semester). Nice prof but very hard
Jon is not a good professor. His exams are so hard. He barely goes over anything that is going to be on the exam. His exams and notes don't match. Lecture is very dry and heavy.
This guy is very passionate about criminology. The course texbook is a book he wrote and gets used in USA and Australia as well. The guy is knowledgable, and relates subjects to real life scenarios or film clips for easier understanding. He is a tough grader, and his tests are not easy. Only take him if you are truly passionate about criminology.
I was a bit nervous to take Jon's course, but it is mandatory under the criminology program. I watched an interview with him on the Bigger Than Me Podcast on YouTube and felt more excited to take his course. He talked about the challenges he faced in university, writing his textbook, his research and his life. I highly recommend checking it out
Jon was sometimes short and rude and did not want students emailing him a lot of times, if you did, he would not email back with useful information and seemed mad that you did. His lectures consisted of short points, not going into details about concepts making it hard to learn. He would also cancel class a lot even though it was in person.
Terrible prof. Does not care about helping his students succeed. The paper topics are super vague which he refuses to clarify. The midterm and final was difficult. Be prepared to memorize each and every word in the textbook.
Just do yourself a favour and don't.
People say he's a tough marker but he grades you on how well you can follow instructions. Jon always answered my questions well and didn't make me feel stupid for asking them. If you can follow instructions (yes, read the textbook) and show him you can apply the theory you'll easily get an A in this class.
Extremely tough grader. Especially for a intro course. Multiple people in class all said including myself that their papers were graded extremely harshly. At times he was very rude and short with students. One of my rudest teachers in my schooling experience and I would not recommend this class to anyone else.
John is one of the worst professors I have taken in my entire undergrad. Not only is he rude, his lectures are also dry, boring, and vague. He made us do weekly assignments that were not worth much and you could meet his requirements and he would refuse to give you full marks. Also, his exams are worded confusing and hard. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS EVER
The exams are very tough and difficult. Very textbook dependent and you will have to memorize each sentence to its definition. Decent marker as long as you follow the guideline to its weekly assignments
Dr. Jon is an incredibly knowledgeable professor with some great stories about his experience as a criminologist. He has great contacts within the academic community and knows many who have significantly contributed to the field. He gave me a lot of feedback on my essay and allowed me to make the necessary changes to get an A.
Open-book midterm/final - buy online textbook. 1500 word paper & 500 word weekly assignments. Exams = difficult. Assignments = doable but require effort & proper analysis. Paper = difficult; 3 topics to choose from; research is hard to find. Rude & condescending comments on assignments/ paper compared to any other prof. Only take if required.
Not my favourite prof, you have to go to class and don't go on your phone, he will call you out. He made it feel like I was in high school again. His tests were hard and he was not very nice.
Super easygoing if you do what you're supposed to. Won't tolerate phones or any distractions during lectures. Make sure to do readings before class, he is very persistent on this. Exams are very straightforward if you study the material. Many of the lectures are very interesting and he does a great job of presenting them.
Gives terrible feedback on the paper, such rude comments and the feedback was not helpful at all. Do not recommend taking this Prof at all. He is super strict with phones in class he will call you out and he is just overall really rude.
His class is very hard. Exams are really tough with many things that could be tested for. Paper was difficult as well you have a option of 3 choices and research is very scarce on these topics. One of the harder profs for sure exams were the most difficult part of the class
There's one paper, and 2 exams. The paper was harshly graded. The lectures were actually interesting, is very knowledgeable, and he does a good job at presenting them. He does not give out the slides after class, so you must take notes. If you have everything from the slides and study those, the exams are actually not that hard.
Very good proff. Just take notes during class and make sure to note down everything from the ppt's in class. use chat gpt to explain the slide notes and you'll be good. interesting course and engaging but lot of theory. you'll have fun if you study.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Asked for help and guidance on the paper, he responded with everything I am doing wrong and said he believes I will fail his final. Gave me the wrong midterm and blamed me for it. Straight up said "you should be grateful for the mark I gave you on the paper, as this deserved a 0". Extremely rude to students.
He is the TOUGHEST GRADER I've ever had. I struggled a LOT in his course. As a person, he's fine, but as a professor? Hell no. This theory-heavy course demands effort, but even after preparing hard, he fails you. You'll barely pass. He doesn't share notes; write his PPTs yourself. Stressful and extremely tough grader. please AVOID.
HE HAS BEEN THE WORST PROFESSOR THAT IVE EVER TAKEN .HIS LECTURES WERE PRETTY INTERESTING BUT WAS SUPER RUDE TO ME AND ACTUALLY MADE ME BREAKDOWN WITH HIS ARROGANT AND RUDE RESPONSES .
prof is a bit too difficult for what i am used to, exam questiosn come from textbook, videos, his lectures, etc so hard to keep up
He's an okay prof. He knows the material and can explain concepts when asked, but the class is quite challenging. Exams are heavily textbook-based, to the point where you basically have to study the entire textbook for each test to feel prepared. Attendance and participation are mandatory. He does not post any lecture notes.
Heidt could be rude at times, but he knows the material he is teaching and is able to convey information throughly. Prepare to spend hours on this class as the exams are based upon the lectures, activites in the lectures (including videos, discussions), and posted readings online. Long answer is from the activites. Good luck, you need it.
