Great film teacher...very funny, interesting. Extremely fun class to take. Loved it.

His film classes were the most enjoyable things I took at OSU. Make sure you go and pay attention to the lectures, because that's what the final will be about. You'll also want to go because his lectures are always insightful, entertaining and interesting
very personable guy. fun lectures, not too lofty, but addresses the class in every-day language.
He is the best professor that I have had here at OSU, take his classes(if you can get in) cos it is soooo worth it. And don't freak out about the tests, because thay aren't as bad as you may think they are.
Easy class but unless you are a film geek he's boring, not funny, and annoying.
AWESOME! His class is really fun and he has a lot of enthusiasm for what he is teaching.
Interesting lectures, very smart, without a doubt one of the best teachers at OSU. If you show up for lectures and go to the movie screenings, you can consider the class passed.
I've never been more interested in a class. He's exciting and really draws you into the subject. It'hard not to start getting excited about the material also. Great teacher; reminds me of Woody ALlen, watch the movies and you'll see what i'm talking about
such a fun class. definitely try to get into it if at all possible. what other class do you get to watch godard, the godfather, mean streets, woody allen movies and so on. plus, he knows his movies. tests are very easy if you just go to class.
Fun class, his lectures are funny and insightful. I also took his intro fiction class which was a blast. He turns literary characters into film characters with his lectures, and that makes the novels that much easier to follow.
Awesome classes. You will learn SO much about film. Lewis really knows his stuff. The book will help you a bit, but make sure you show up to lecture EVERY DAY. The class is based on one final alone, but if you've been in class it's all good.
Probably the best professor on Campus! He is interesting and engaging. You look forward to his classes to learn more and to hear what he has to say (sometimes it is really funny). He will make you want to find other classes of his to take!
Even if you are not particularly interested in movie history Jon Lewis is very insightful and provides a very fascinating look at social trends in America and the rest of the world. He is very entertaining and knows his stuff. Great class!
facinating class even if youre not interested in film. He's very knowledgable about his field, so any question you throw at him about any film will be answered. I agree, the test sounds scary, but just memorize dates, directors, and film's historical context, and you've got it. Fabulous class.
Jon is a great professor, hands down. The class is based on one test so you need to be there for every lecture, but theres no reason not to be. Lectures were fun...so help me God, fun. You can't go wrong with any of his film classes.
boring class, good woody allen impersonation.
Do not take his film class. He made us watch some obscure French movie where they**** a woman and eat her. Sick.
A very smug man with a twisted take on film, I can not recommend this class.
soooo boring
You must go to this class and watch the movies to stand a chance on the final. Grading is done based on one test over all of the material (the final.) I found him entertaining and liked the class. He has a good sense of humor, and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the history of film.
This guy just likes to hear himself talk. If I had it to do over, I think I'd rather watch paint dry. If you can't avoid taking a class from him, make sure you take good notes. He bases all his questions off of them, not the "required" huge expensive book. Test isn't hard if you watch the films.
One of the easiest classes I ever had, and enjoyable. Some people like to complain because the movies didn't have explosions or naked women, but classic film is an art in its own right. So many people can't see that.
Jon Lewis is so tight and this class is an easy A...Entertaining and funny though he talks about the same stuff a little too much. Unless you're a moron like the people below me who rated him, then this should be an enjoyable class.
Guy couldn't care less about students OR teaching...sorry, dude, but no one forced you to take this job...if you hate it so much go to hollywood and try to make it there...oh wait, you probably tried...and stop assigning your books/articles
Not much of a "teacher." Does like to hear himself talk and the movies he introduced in this class were not of high quality. I guess if you are going to OSU, it's probably not because of the film classes. Everything he teaches could be found in Entertainment Weekly articles.

I loved this guy, I would have to agree with the person below me who is hot for teacher. I took Film Comedy from him and learned so much. got me interested in all sorts of movies I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Doesn't care about students at all. Only interested in himself.
jon is super hot and always talks about sexy lingerie sometime in the course of the term. he's funny and insightful and has the most entertaining classes on campus.
This guy is great! His class is easy too. People say he talks to much but I could listen to him all day. Great instructor!
great teacer, funny, interesting, not monotonous and boring.
Strange class. Starts with silent movies and 4 hours of silent watching is a bit of a struggle to get through. Drink energy drink. But lectures are funny and he loves his material. A bit frightening the first day, but sense he's bluffing.
I learned more from this class than any other class I've taken during my collegiate career. He is also very entertaining and funny during lecture.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. No homework, quizzes, or tests before the final...Your entire grade is based on how you do on that final. If you go to class and watch the movies should be pretty easy. Also very entertaining teacher who teaches in a way that actually makes you interested in the subject. VERY highly recommended.
definitly my favorite teacher so far at OSU really interesting and really funny.
Easy class and test. Jon Lewis is fun to listen to. All you have to do is see the movies.
Jokes around and gets angry a lot in lecture. Just a final, very unclear of what is expected. He went over the expectations the first day and won't talk about them again. One day in class we watched a 30 minute super graphic documentary about the holocaust, completely!! unrelated to the class. While the class may be easy, it is horribly boring.
hilarious when he gets going on a topic. he can be get angry during class, but only if students aren't paying attention. only a final, haven't taken it yet, but he has explained how it works a couple of times during class. its just watching movies we've seen in class and then identifying them, the director, year and significance.
Jon Lewis likes to mainly lecture in class and he didn't really go into film as much as the other issues surrounding the topic. But if you show up, take good notes, and reference the ideas in your final paper, you can achieve a high grade. Just don't expect alot from his classes. And, he's not very approachable beyond the classroom.
Very random and makes his notes as he goes. He spends a lot of the very long and boring lecture correcting his typing as he has quite a lot of typos. Your grade is based on the final which really stresses you out. It is imparative that you watch every movie and IF he happens to mention anything about that movie in class...WRITE THE INFO DOWN!!
One of the best classes I have EVER taken at OSU! Great guy, very nice, a lover of films, really knows what he is talking about. Show an interest, and you'll be fine. I wish I could take more classes with the guy.
Course objectives were very unclear. Grading was highly subjective, making it hard for students to predict where they stood. Professor was not approachable, and became angry in class on occasion. Increased level of stress. Interesting topic, however, nothing out of the ordinary.
Very interesting professor to listen too. He knows how to combine learning while at the same time connecting with us as young students. He's very funny, but takes his topic of study seriously, without making it dry.
The worst class and professor I've ever had in four years at OSU. The grade is only based on the final, so if you mess that up, there is no way to make up. His lecture is never organized and moreoever you gotta watch extremely boring movie 4hours per week. Final is very subjective, very harsh grading. Take MUS101 for bacc core, much easier.
Easily my favorite teacher in my college career. He was tough and lots of students in my class absolutely hated him. But he taught me more in that screenwriting class than I learned in the 5 classes I took elsewhere.
This prof was very interesting and funny. But you only have one exam in his class and that makes up 100 percent of your grade. So if perform crap on that, you get a crappy grade in the class. Pay attention in his class!
The movie guy. Fantastic lectures, brilliant insight.
Really great, tests are essays.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had. Does not care about his students, unclear about what he expects for final which is the only grade - terrible way to test knowledge and make sure students learn. No powerpoints, notes, nothing. Scribbled handwritten pieces of paper he puts up on the projector, on occasion. No help at all.
Nearly responsible for my leaving Oregon State, actually, he didn't grade the VERY subjective one test that determined your whole entire grade. Did not agree to meet with me about it and would make snide remarks to my face. Burn in the hell you think you understand you self-obsessed pig.
He was the reason I graduated from OSU (1995)- Got me motivated. Made learning interesting and exciting. He'll challenge you- not going to be an easy grade...sorry party people.
hardest class i have taken.i went to class, i took notes, i watched the movies but when it came time to take the final (the grade on the final is the grade in the class) i did really bad and i failed the class. probably because the movies were not in english! what a waste of time.
The class interest level comes and goes. He chooses very action, manly movies so there isn't a big variety. He's a funny guy, but refuses to let anyone for any reason take the final early or later than the date. The final is also the ONLY assignment, which could be good or bad. He can be very disorganized and off topic, but i recommed it.
I absolutely loved his class. The films he chose could be boring at times, but he gave us a fair warning the first day of class that we might not always enjoy the films shown. The final was stressful, not only because it is the only grade, but the format is very fast pace. Take good notes during lecture and you'll do fine on the final.
Overall, the class was interesting. He is enthusiastic about the subject, so that helps. One thing about this series (and I am sure you have heard before) - The final is the whole grade. It really isn't too bad, and if you like movies, it is pretty easy.
Finally a professor who teaches us students like adults. He expects you are in the class because you want to learn-No hw or stupid power points. I didn't even look at the textbook, missed a few of the movies, but I came to every class and got an A. He is so funny and easy to listen to. If you are passionate about the course you will do great.
Lewis is the man! He made film SO interesting and cool. Lectures are great. Everything that he taught is applicable to real life. I'm even watching silent films at home now! Take this class, you won't regret it.
He is very unclear about how he wants the questions answered on the final and it seems to be graded solely on HOW you answer the question, not how well you know the material. Doing all of the extra reading and extra credit is pointless, just hope the TAs who take almost 3 weeks to grade the final like your writing style.
Jon Lewis is my hero! Not only was this class easy grade-wise, but I learned A TON! Most valuable class I've taken so far, I really feel a new appreciation for film. And it's all thanks to Lewis, he's a brilliant NY jew who really knows his stuff. He was even in a movie, "this film is not yet rated." Take this class, you won't regret it!!
His class is super fun, though after taking the entire series, I started to get tired of his political ranting.
He shocked me. Degrading experiences may be an appropriate introduction to Hollywood but not OSU. I actually had to complain to the Dept. Chair, who excused Lewis as "Just macho" (??!)
I have taken all of his movie classes and they are a fun, easy grade. You have to go to this class because he doesn't post notes but that is okay because he is very funny. Easily my favorite professor.
He is hilarious! He knows the material backwards and forwards and has an impressive resume. Sometimes he threw little hissy fits about the disrespectful students in class but I understand his frustration. Loved the class, loved him!
Great teacher. I absolutely loved his class and he made me want to come and learn everyday. Highly recommend to fulfill baccore
Hw was definitely nice to look at and easy to listen to
Excellent instructor. Demanding. Helpful. Informative. A ot of work. Definitely worth my time.
I got an A. Film is fascinating. Nonetheless, insults from the self-obsessed prof made the class demeaning & disgusting.
Jon Lewis loves what he does and makes the class enjoyable. He does not allow computers or any electronic devices (He will call you out if he sees you on your phone.) The only grades you get are from one midterm and a final so the class is easy if you watch the films and go to lecture.
Good luck trying to study for his two tests. Your entire grade is the mid-term and final and he gives almost no clue as to how to study for them. Don't miss a single lecture and write down every word he says. His lecture notes are impossible to understand & too many to write down. Watch every movie. Most of them are online for free.
I liked Lewis, but don't think it's going to be an easy class. The final is 100% of your grade, and you have to remember a lot of details to get full points. You don't need the textbook, but don't skip a class.
Loved this class, as long as you attend the majority of the lectures and all the films (which should be the reason you took the course in the first place!)then it's all good. Prof is really funny as well.
If you cannot take honest criticism from your peers, WR 407 will be a living nightmare for you. This class consistently provided me with a high level of anxiety, but I left the class with a stronger understanding of story. I never felt like my time was wasted, as Lewis lectures were always informative. Don't miss class, or else your grade is toast.
He made me want to study film. easy BACCORE
He's rude and demeaning. Makes you feel stupid and has one of the largest egos from any professor I have ever had. He thinks that because he has studied movies his whole life he is somehow better than everybody else. He is not a good human being. Fairly easy class though. Just make sure you take notes and watch the films.
I loved this class, the lectures are somewhat boring, but John tend to makes them funny. If you pay attention, you will think of film in a unique way and admire old films. Just like Hollywood, you have to be open to much criticism of different subjects, he's not trying to be mean, but its what he has to say to get his point across.
Jon is super cool and is really passionate about what he teaches but the fact that my whole grade is only based off a 20 page final is a little ridiculous. I was active in class and took notes and what not and did not get the grade I deserved. The final paper is kind of BS in my opinion. I'd take a different baccore if I had the option.
I've taken three classes with Professor Lewis, all of which were super fun and fairly easy. Very knowledgeable on films and his lectures were pretty engaging and funny. Probably one of my favorite professors, you can tell he loves his job. If you watch the movies and take notes, you should pass with no problem.
Not a clear grader, rude to me when I emailed asking for information on an assignment and just all around rude. Having to deal with his poorly explained assignments online with poor feedback makes this class a lot more annoying.
He is hit-or-miss for me: sometimes entertaining, sometimes annoying and/or boring. He goes off on a lot of tangents but sometimes tested us on those tangents so I wasn't sure when to pay attention. I didn't take notes, but if you pay attention during lectures you will probably be fine. Also show up and DON'T use your phone in class.
Lewis gives hilarious lectures and stays to talk with students about whatever they want after class for long periods of time- you can approach him for pretty much everything. He has a feminist perspective on film, and I've had lots of conversations about queer hollywood with him- don't believe the reviews calling him "macho". Don't skip anything!
Jon was really fun in lecture. He allows no cell phone or computers which at first I was very upset at first but honestly it really helped me focus. All quizzes are written answers so you can explain better. Also if you don't feel like going to watch the movie in person you can watch it at your own time.
