Prof. Lockard is so nice! And he's actually really good at teaching the information. He always does minireviews before each new lecture of old material so it really sticks in your head. But, he's a boring lecturer, so if you're class doesn't participate much, you're gonna be bored out of your mind. I'd take him again though bc he's a good prof.
He is an outstanding professor. His lectures include a hefty dose of student participation so be prepared to be challenged. He really wants his students to think for themselves and use critical thinking skills. Good, engaging lectures as well as in-class discussion and exercises. Good guy. I would take his classes again.
He is a very intelligent, thoughtful professor. His main goal is to have students use their communication skills in the classroom and to become active participants in the course. His lectures require students to participate in the discussion of the course material. His course requires a lot of reading and homework.
Lockard is a inspiration professor who wants his students to be successful. Lots of in-class exercises and discussions to foster students participation. His lectures are more of a formal class discussion so be prepared before going to class. Very knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. Overall, one of the best professors I have had at GVSU
Great professor! His lectures demand student participation so read the book and be prepared! He wants his students to be active participation in the course and includes a number of in-class activities to be students involved. Great communicator who knows his stuff. I would recommend to others!
One of my favorite Profs! Thoughtful and insightful, makes students use their thinking and communication skills. His desire for students to be successful is evident, but you really have to work to earn your grade. Lectures demand student participation and there are lots of activities to engage students. Great lectures!
I really learned a lot in his class. Does a great job of making students become active participants in the course. If you like to participate in insightful and thoughtful discussions on social issues, he is the prof for you. Lots of reading and classroom activities. He really makes you earn your grade! One of my favorite professors at GVSU!
I'm glad I took this course! Professor Lockard is an amazing instructor who makes students use their critical thinking and communication skills. If you like great classroom discussions, he is the prof for you. I learned a lot about social issues and how I can make a positive impact. One of the best profs at GVSU. Definitely recommend!
Super prof! He really makes you think about issues and goes beyond the basic text to bring the subject to life. Lectures are more of a discussion which requires students to participate and to verbalize their thoughts. Lots of reading and classroom activities. Good guy who wants his students to succeed. I'm really glad I took his course.
Insightful, intelligent, demanding and caring---everything you want in a professor if you really want to learn something. Lectures are interesting and require student participation so be ready for class! Lots of required reading and lots of in-class discussions and exercises. I learned a lot! Highly recommended.
One of my favorite profs! He demands a lot of work from his students and you have to work to earn your grade. If you don't participate in the classroom discussions or complete ALL of the assignments, be prepared for a low grade. However, if you are really engaged in the course, you will learn a lot and get a great grade. Lectures are great!
Great prof! He demands a lot from his students but you learn a lot. Very intelligent guy who knows his stuff. His course requires a lot of work (ten quizzes, two exams, three exercises, a bunch of in-class exercises and an end-of-course project) but you learn a lot and the class is very rewarding. Be prepared to participate!
Take his course and you will learn! Requires lots of reading, participation in classroom discussions and different assignments. Heavy workload but you leave the course with an understanding of today's social issues. Great lectures and in-class activities. I highly recommend this prof!
Intelligent, serious-minded Prof! Lots of reading and work but you learn a great deal about social problems. Lectures are more of a formal class discussion that requires students to participate and use critical thinking skills. Be aware, he requires a group project that is given in front of the class. Still, highly recommended.
Great prof who wants his students to learn and succeed. His class requires lots of reading and student involvement though discussions, exercises and analysis of the issues. Prompts students to use critical thinking skills and to think of ways to deal with social issues. Lots of work but an eye-opening class. I highly recommend.
Great. insightful prof! Be prepare to work and learn: 10 quizzes, 2 exams, 3 graded exercises, weekly discussion board and a group project! However, it is a great class where you will learn important ideas and concepts. Highly recommended.
One of my favorite professors. Insightful and intelligent, he really wants his students to think and to learn. This class will make you think about your thoughts and ideas and apply them to real-world problems. Lots of work but I really loved this class. Great lectures and discussions! I recommend everyone take Prof Lockard for sociology.
Intelligent, no-nonsense professor. You must participate in classroom discussions if you want to get a good grade. Truly cares about his students and wants them to do well. Be prepared for lots of reading, and be prepared to participate in engaging classroom discussions and lectures. You will learn a lot! Recommended.
One of the best Profs as GVSU! Lots of work in his course, but you will learn a great deal about social issues. Great combination of lectures, discussions and in-class exercises. Be prepared to participate and to voice your thoughts and ideas. Tough grader but by making you think about current issues, helps you learn a great deal.
Tough grader who demands a lot of work, but you will learn some amazing things in his class. Very insightful prof who wants his students to use their thinking skills and voice their thoughts and ideas about today's social problems. Be prepared to participate as class participation is graded! Highly recommended!
Lots of reading and work for a 100-level class but you will learn a lot. Participation in the classroom discussions is a must if you want to get a good grade. Good mix of discussions, exercises, discussion board questions, and exams. Insightful prof who cares about his students and ants them to learn. Lots of work, but I highly recommend!
Great prof who demands a lot of work from his students, but in return you will learn plenty regarding today's social issues. Great lectures which focus on student participation so be prepared for class! Lots of reading assignments, exercises, and online discussion boards. His class was eye-opening to me and I highly recommend.
Tough, but fair grader. Lots of reading and Prof Lockard requires students to participate in classroom discussions and exercises. Insightful prof who can be funny at times. It was Lockard who made the class worthwhile with his observations and relating the material to his students. Gives students every opportunity to succeed. Recommended
Very tough, but fair grader. Intelligent prof who really wants his students to think and learn. Will give you every opportunity to succeed, but you will have to work hard to get a good grade. Class participation is a must so be prepared and complete the reading assignments. I am glad I took the course, highly recommended.
If you are looking for any easy class and grade, keep looking. This prof is a tough, but fair grader, and you will work hard in his class. However, you will learn a tremendous amount. I am so glad I took Lockard's class as there were many valuable ideas that I will be able to use today and in the future. Great prof, great class! Recommended.
One of the best profs at GVSU! I loved his class even though it can be difficult due to the large amount of reading and required class participation. He cares about his students and wants them to develop their critical thinking skills. If you want a challenge, with the reward being a great learning experience take his course!
Demands a lot from his students, but in return you will learn a great deal about today's social issues. Tough, but fair grader, and his syllabus details what you need to do to get a good grade. Lots of reading and you must participate in classroom discussions. He does not tolerate lazy students. Be prepared to work and learn.
Lots of work, but I'm glad I took his course. He cares about his students and wants them to develop the ability to express their thoughts, opinions and viewpoints on social issues. Inspirational as he told us that what we are learning about today's social issues is important as we will be the next generation of leaders! Great guy, great prof!
Love his class! Thought it would be an easy class and I was wrong, but in a good way. Lots of reading, discussions and exercises designed to make students think and express their opinion. You will learn a lot in Lockard's class. Things you will be able to use in the future. If you want to learn about social problems, take this class!
Loved his class! Encourages students to think and express their opinions on social issues. Great discussions and lectures which I found to be very insightful and thought-provoking. Come to class prepared! He wants students to be active participants. One of my favorite professors. I learned a lot and so will you. Recommended!
The best SOC professor at GVSU! I have taken two of his courses (105 and 315) and he is great. I have learned a great deal regarding social issues due to his insightful lectures and in-class exercises. He really wants his students to participate and learn. Lots of work but it will make you a better student and citizen. Take his classes!
A great, insightful communicator! Be prepared for lots of reading, classroom exercises and discussions, but in the end you will become enlightened on today's major social problems. He gives his students every opportunity to get a good grade but you must put forth a good effort. Much harder class than what I imagined, but it was very worthwhile.
Lots of work for a 100-level class but it was worth it. I have a better understanding of social issues and how they affect me. Good professor who gets students involved in discussions and critical thinking exercises. Be prepared to participate and to do a group project. Soc 105 as taught by Lockard is recommended!
Great prof--smart and inspirational. To get a good grade, you must attend class, participate in discussions and exercises and do a group project. Grading is a mix of quizzes, tests, exercises, classroom participation and a group project. He really tries to get students to think about issues and to express their opinions. Glad I took the course.
Dr. Lockard runs his class not by heavy lectures but by small powerpoint presentations in which the whole class must participate. Everybody gets a chance to speak their mind and he listens to everyone and gives good feedback. He is very good at incorporating other students perspectives into the discussions.
Dr. Lockard is a great, caring professor. Instead of lectures, his class consists of discussions of key ideas in which students are expected to participate and contribute their ideas. This format encourages students to utilize their critical thinking skills and powers of observation--I love this! I highly recommend Dr. Lockard's class.
Very understanding, holds interesting lectures, and all around nice guy.
Great prof who gives his students a wonderful learning experience. Interesting lectures and students must come to class ready to participate in meaning discussions. Provides great feedback and encourages students to provide their opinions on various social issues. I'm glad I took his course.
Best professor at GVSU! Encourages students to be active participants and provides for a great leaning environment. Lectures are more of a discussion of key ideas and there are some great in-class exercises. I really liked the documentaries that highlighted social. Really cares about his students! Highly recommended.
Overall professor Lockard is one of the best teachers I've had in the sociology program. He does a great job of presenting material and is enthusiastic about the material he presents. He works also with the students if there are any problems they have for assignments and is very reasonable with giving students every chance they can to succeed.
I loved this class. Professor Lockard worked hard to promote learning in his students. It was a great class because it provided lots of insight to common issues people face on a daily basis. I think it was challenging because often times the questions the professor posed required students to think "outside the box."
Professor Lockard was the most caring professor I have ever had. He truly cares about his students, and his lectures are engaging and require participation. The content is eye opening, and I would recommend him as a Professor. He has a lot of office hours, and is quick to respond to emails.
Lockard is by far one of the best profs I have had, and also one of the best people I have met. He is so kind and caring, and his class is based alot upon participation and he takes time to listen to everyones opinions and give amazing feedback. He does everything in his power to make sure everybody does well in his class. Highly recommend!!
Prof Lockard is a really nice guy. He makes his lectures more interesting by adding discussions to them. There are weekly quizzes but you are given multiple attempts so you can get 100 each time. There's one research presentation which is done with a partner but is easy to understand. Overall, this is a good class to take for an easy A in a gen ed
Gary Lockard is a really nice guy and a very good professor. His class is very lecture heavy and the only tests are the midterm and final. There is one group project at the end of the semester but it is fairly easy, just a little time consuming. You WILL NOT need to buy the book "Social Problems and the Quality of Life." Easy A for sure.
Professor Lockard is caring and always helpful to his students. This class is practically all PowerPoints. There's only two tests which is the midterm and final. There's weekly online homework and discussion board questions but they're pretty easy. Participation is important in this class. Students only do one presentation at the end of the year.
I love Gary! he's a nice guy that enjoys his job. he varies the class between lecture, discussion, worksheets, and films. he's always prepared for class and encourages discussion. sign up!
Professor Lockards teaching style was one of thing things that contributed most to my learning. He is a very fair professor. I am very glad that I switched into his class. He was very good at facilitating open dialogue and engaging the class. I think that his teaching style worked for me the best. I'm very glad to have had Lockard as my professor.
Lockard is an amazing professor who is passionate about the subject he teaches. He genuinely cares about his students and is reasonable with his work load. I switched to his class after the first day of class because the SOC 105 professor I had before him seemed too cold and rigid. This was the best decision I made this semester.
Professor Lockard was a gem and was very understanding and empathetic towards his students. I love the fact that he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Smart, fair, and caring. You can't ask for anything more! Do yourself a favor a take one of his classes.
Amazing professor, amazing person! One of the best teachers I have ever met. Very passionate about the subject he teaches and is always prepared. Gives students every opportunity to do well and get a good grade. Be prepared to participate in class and learn some new and interesting things!
I love Dr. Lockard and his teaching style! He really wants his students to learn and he encourages us to develop our own thoughts and ideas. Class includes weekly quizzes and discussion boards, two exams, three papers and one final project. I am really glad I took his course. Highly recommended!
He is a pretty cool professor who gives everyone a chance to voice their ideas during classroom discussions. His relaxed, but yet informative, teaching style really worked for me. His lectures are more of an interactive discussion and he includes exercises and documentaries to help students learn. Great guy, great class. Highly recommended!
I went into SOC 105 with professor Lockard expecting it to be relatively easy and it is... kind of. The material isn't challenging at all and the midterm was not difficult (though his lectures are very boring). However, he assigns so many unnecessary essays. I wouldn't recommend prof Lockard unless you want to be doing super time consuming busywork
Don't know what the student who wrote the previous rating is talking about when they state: "so many essays." There are two essays and a written research project. Hardly excessive. Lockard doesn't give "lectures,"--he leads students in discussing the material If a student finds this boring it is because they are lazy, stupid and unprepared!
I want to address a previous review that said his lectures were boring and there were to many essays. There were two essays in the class, TWO! hardly excessive. As for the "lectures," Lockards leads his students in discussions of the topics. If someone found his "lectures" boring it is because they are lazy, unprepared or stupid. Love his class.
This is a rebuttal of a review posted on 3/07/2019. Whoever wrote that essay is an idiot. There are only 2 essays in the class. Instead of lectures, Dr L. leads his students in discussion of key topics. If a student finds these discussions "boring" it is because the are probably playing on their phone, lazy, and unprepared for class.
Great guy and best sociology prof at GVSU. Lots of work but you learn something if you apply yourself. Students who are smart, hard-working, and want to learn love this guy. Slackers not so much. Gives every student the opportunity to excel. I like how he has "discussions" instead of lectures. I highly recommend this course and prof.
Great class, great prof! I learned a lot in Lockard's class, but there is a lot of work: 10 quizzes, two exams, two essays, and a research project. I love his teaching style which uses discussions instead of lectures. Students are required to participate in the discussions, and this is great! Allows us to interject our opinions. Recommended!
Outstanding prof who really wants his students to learn. Teaching style requires students to think and express their ideas as opposed to just memorizing things. I am learning a lot in his class that will help me well beyond this semester. Tries to instill "life long learning experiences," not just sociology. I am glad I signed up for his class.
Best prof I've ever had at GVSU. His class is difficult as he requires his students to think for themselves and develop their own thoughts instead of just repeating what is in a textbook. Great discussions (instead of lectures) and very innovative use of exercises and documentaries. His class is great! Highly recommended.
Outstanding professor and class! If you want to learn some great stuff, sign up for one of Dr. L's classes. Smart, creative and gives everyone a great chance to succeed. Classroom participation matters so you can't go to sleep in class, play on your phone, or not be prepared. Really love how he has classroom discussions instead of lectures.
At last, a real human being for a professor! Great guy, great instructor. Really cares about his students and understands the pressures that we face. However, you have to work hard to get a good grade (this is good!). You must be prepared for class and put forth a real effort. He knows if you are a slacker or phony. Sign up for his class!
Really cool guy who knows his stuff. I enjoy his class as it has lots of discussions, exercises, and documentaries. He opened my eyes about the problems my generation has the opportunity to solve. Not an easy class as he demands students think for themselves and develop their own thoughts & ideas. Exactly what college is a all about. The best!
Great instructor! Demands that his students develop their own ideas instead of just repeating what's in a book. This can be difficult for some students but I enjoyed this type of learning. Must be prepared for classroom discussions! His courses has lots of work, but its all good. I highly recommend this class if you like to think for yourself
Great prof who understands the challenges that student face (school, work, family). Interesting class that is very heavy on classroom discussions so be prepared to participate (10% of grade). He is the best prof in the sociology department. Highly recommended!
Prof Lockard is great. He can be boring at times but he means well and is super nice and actually cares for his students. You have weekly quizzes and discussions which aren't too bad. You need to show up and participate!!! I would take again! Overall highly recommend, great guy.
His lectures are very long and can get boring because it is basically the same thing every day. But overall, if you show up and participate it is an easy A.
Professor Lockard is the sweetest! I really loved this discussion based class. At first I was very nervous because I don't like speaking in front of the class, but he makes it a comfortable environment for everyone. There are 2 exams, Connect assignments, 3 short answer assignments, and a group project. Super easy class and very eye opening!
Professor Lockard has a very easy class. If you actually remember to do the assignments and the weekly discussion questions you'll end up with an A. My only critique would be that he doesn't give much feedback on assignments, but he usually answers emails and in class questions about anything else. Lectures can be boring but show up and participate
The class is very boring and entirely participation based. Participation is apart of your grade, and chances are you will fail this part, even if you do participate. This is simply because he doesnt make an effort to get to know peoples names. Oh, and dont even think about emailing him because hes not going to answer.
I disagree with the previous review. I was in the same class and if students did not sit in class half asleep or playing on their phones, they could have participated and gotten a better grade. I received a good grade but I participated in every single class session. . He always answered my emails, but I was not DEMANDING that me change my grade.
I also disagree with a previous review. He always replied to my emails. However, he clearly states for students to not email him about grades as he will not answer them. It is a students responsibility to participate in class so the prof knows their name. Previous reviewer probably wanted an "A" without doing the work. Typical whinner.
Participation really matters in this class. I talked in class 1-2 times a day and never missed one of his classes, but failed participation. I think that just goes to show you really have to participate a lot to do well. Failing participation brought my A down to a B+ I dont think my participation grade was deserving, but he doesnt discuss this.
Great professor! If you pay attention, you will learn much more than just sociology lessons, He provides an opportunity to learn "life long lessons." Lots of work and you will have to use your mind and think about issues, not just memorize things. One of the best teachers I have ever met. Be prepared to participate in classroom activities.
I love this guy as he is a no-nonsense professor. Attend class, complete assignments on time, and participate and you will do well. Doesn't coddle lazy students, those who fail to ready the syllabus, or those who always have excuses for not doing assignments. Great class which includes, as Dr L, calls it, "life long lessons." Would take again!
Professor Lockard was fantastic in teaching this course. He made lectures enjoyable and always looked out to make sure students were doing their best. This helped me learn the material well and it helped me advance my knowledge in different sections. Do yourself a favor and take this course!
Professor Lockard is the best and kindest man! He is a wonderful professor, who blends lectures, classroom discussions, videos, documentaries, and writing assignments into one interesting class. I like the extra "lifelong learning" lessons that are added into the class. I would not change anything. One of the best classes I have taken at GVSU.
I really loved Dr. L's class as there were a lot of issues brought up in the class that I never knew much about. Now in day to day life I can relate certain things back to what the class taught me. Prof Lockard's teaching style and material presented helped me be a more proactive member of society and feel that I can make a positive impact.
Professor Lockard did a great job with teaching a somewhat touchy subject. He kept things interesting and tried to keep everyone engaged even when the information could be controversial at points. Yes, I really enjoyed the subject matter in the class. It stretched my thinking . The relevance to todays issues was outstanding. A must take class!
Dr. Lockard was a vital part of this class. He did such a good job making sure his students knew the information and made it super interactive in order for us to learn the material better. He taught us different ways of thinking, illustrated real world problems, and made us think about the long term affects society has on our future lives.
I LOVED GARY!!!! He cares a lot about his students and I think he doesn't get enough credit. I hope that he doesn't feel like his students don't appreciate him because truly some of us do! He was such a great professor I would 11/10 recommend to anyone. He made the course requirements and guidelines very clear so it was easier to succeed. Great!!
Professor Lockard was very good at encouraging class participation and presented information in a way that was easy to understand and learn, The discussions in class contributed the most because we got to see many perspectives. I also liked the weekly quizzes, discussion board questions, and documentaries. Overall, a great class!
I loved this class! You were forced to think about real world issues and were forced to participate, which for a lot of people was hard for some reason. Yes, he asked a lot of critical thinking questions that helped stretch the mind and It taught me to think outside of the box. Dr. L is a great professor and is a very interesting guy!
My favorite prof! He is very intelligent and wants his students to succeed. The class is based on interactive classroom discussion of course materials as opposed to lectures (I love this!). There is a good mix of readings, quizzes, exams, viewing documentaries and a final research project. I learned a lot. Take this class!
My favorite professor! He outlines course requirements and holds students accountable for their work. I have learned a lot in just a few short weeks. I love how he uses a "classroom discussion" format with students as opposed to lectures. The discussions are interesting and he respects everyone's opinion, left, right or center! Take this class!
Outstanding! One of the best classes I have taken at GVSU. Great mix of discussions, readings, documentaries, quizzes and papers. Dr. L is a great communicator and I love how his lectures are more of a classroom discussion on key ideas! Really appreciates student's efforts and tries to help us succeed. Take this class!
If you have to take a SOC class, this is the prof you want! Intelligent, caring and all-around great guy. Gives his students every chance to get a good grade, but you have to do the work! Slackers need not apply. Great classroom discussions which include all points of view. Take Dr. Lockard's class if you really want to learn something!
Dr. Lockard is a solid Prof. The structure of his class is unique, and quite easy once you get the hang of it. Class time is almost entirely dedicated to discussions about whatever the days topic(s) are, and you are highly encouraged to participate. I was actually able to do decent on the midterm, and final with my only studying being discussions.
I don't know why Prof Lockard has such high ratings on here. Yeah, he seems like a nice guy, but this 100 level course requires a largely unnecessary amount of work in order to do well. I would not take him again. Do not take this class if you're looking for an easy A elective. You have to put in a lot of tedious work to do well in his class.
Professor Lockard was nice but seemed disconnected from the class. There's weekly reading and homework and if you miss lecture you will miss important content. There's one 15-20 pg research paper and presentation at the end of the semester. He made a 100 level course too difficult. I wouldn't take if you're looking for an easy A.
This is not a difficult class, or difficult content, but it is so demanding for no reason. Most of the work feels like busy work, and the class was boring and not engaging!!
I came to rate Dr. Lockard and was appalled at the previous reviews that complained about too much work and not an easy A. Well, duh, it is college. Want an easy A go to community college or take art history. I took Dr. L's class and loved it! Yes, you have to think to do well but it is college. He does not tolerate whiners or complainers.
Dr. Lockrd has great ratings because he deserves them! Great prof, great class. Yes, there is a lot of work, especially to get an A, but that's what I want in a class, to learn. He gives every student a chance to get an A and if they don't it's their own fault. Show up to class, do the assignments, don't constantly whine, and you will do well.
Best prof in the sociology department! I really enjoyed his class and learned a great deal. Yes, there is a lot of work but that is what college is about. I found him to be intelligent, caring, and willing to give every student a chance to get a good grade.
Great course, great instructor! I really enjoyed the class, the lectures, and the group discussions. Be prepared to read and for weekly assignments. Yes, lots of work but enjoyable and fun. I would take any class that Dr. Lockard teaches. If a students does not do well, its their own fault as Lockard provides lots of opportunities to get an A.
A smart, intelligent prof. If you want to learn something, and not waste your time on a "fluff" course, this is the guy to take. Yes, lots of work, but in the end you actually learn something. Some students complain that its not an easy A, or they have to complete all of the assignment to pass. But me, I want to learn something for my money.
Prog Lockard makes his students think! Not an easy course, but one that forces you to think for yourself, be independent, and most of all, be responsible. I enjoy his lectures, discussions, and assignments. I am not a Soc major, but I would take any course that Lockard teaches.
I enjoyed the class and Dr. Lockard's teaching style. I like how he does not waste a lot of time dealing with whiners and complainers. Instead, time is spent on those who want to learn! He outlines the course requirements and it is up to the student to succeed or fail. Most students I know, who are at GVSU to learn, love this guy.
Lots of work, but I actually learned a great deal for a 100 class. Dr. Lockard is a very smart, caring instructor who gives students every opportunity to get a good grade. Be prepared to engage in classroom discussions and class participation is graded! Will you learn, Yes. Do you have to work hard, Yes. But for me, that is why I am at GVSU.
Dr. Lockard did a great job in teaching, what are times are, very sensitive subjects, such as racism and sexism. Smart guy and you can learn a lot if you pay attention. He did a great job in encouraging all students to participate in class. I learned a lot thanks to his teaching style. Highly recommended!
If you have to take a SOC course, this is the prof you want. Yes, with Lockard there is a lot of work but he is a smart guy and you will learn something. Me, I learned how society works and this will help me in a lot of other areas, not just school. I really enjoyed his teaching style and if you pay attention, he has a sly sense of humor.
Best prof I have ever had. I enjoyed his class and teaching style. Yes, there is work involved and class participation is graded, but I ended up learning a lot about society and how things work. If you have to take a SOC class, this is the prof you want. Highly recommended.
Great prof, great class! I really liked how he outlined all of the assignments and gave every student a chance to get a good grade. Really cares about his students but expects students to be responsible and show up for class. If you really put forth an effort, he will try and help you. Not an easy A, but not difficult either.
Interesting professor. Class has a bit of everything: quizzes, exams, research projects, classroom discussions, weekly discussion questions. I enjoyed the class and his insight into the topics. Ended up actually learning something! If you like to think, and just memorize things, this is the class and instructor for you. Recommended!
Not a SOC major, but Lockard made the subject interesting. If you pay attention you will learn and he also has a unique sense of humor. Expects students do ALL of the assignments and to attend class. Do this, and you will get a good grade. I loved who instead of lectures, he leads group discussions. I will take any course he teaches.
The class was intellectually stimulating and each class session it stretched my thinking.. I learned so much, Prof Lockard was very involved everyday and kept us engaged. I liked how there were lectures, discussions, documentaries, videos, etc. Changing it up kept my attention and it was easy learn in all areas. I highly recommend this class.
What made this class interesting was Dr. Lockard. He was a vital part of this class. He did such a good job making sure his students knew the information and made it super interactive in order for us to learn the material better. He was the reason I enjoyed the class and ended up learning a great deal of new ideas. Be prepared to think!
Not a fan of the textbook, but what made this class amazing was Dr. L. He was great in explaining very sensitive topics and helping us understand key issues. I love his lectures, which are really group discussions. Like the variety of discussions,, documentaries, research projects, and quizzes. If you have to take a SOC course, take Lockard.
Not an easy A, but not a difficult one either. Yes, there was lots of reading and work, but Lockard gives every student the opportunity to earn an A. Do the assignments, participate in discussions, attend class and you will do extremely well. Hint: do the extra credit assignment as it may get you the higher grade. Highly recommend this prof
Great teacher! His class really made me think. Yes, there is a lot of assignments and Lockard pushes you to think for yourself but in the end I learned a great deal. Topics were interesting and most people get a good grade. But classroom participation is important and he doesn't like slackers. Highly recommended.
I really like this prof. He is smart and really gives good lectures, which are more like group discussion among the class. I like the explanations and real-world examples he provides. There is a lot of work but he gives lots of opportunities to do well in the class. Be prepared for readings, quizzes, exams, and research projects.
Simply the best. Did a great job of switching the class to online format when COVID-19 struck. Sent out weekly updates, gave students extra time when needed, and explained exactly what we needed to do. I loved his class and teaching style. Most students get a good grade if they simply do all of the assignments and think for themselves.
Great prof! What I loved about his class is he allows all different viewpoints of controversial subjects to be discussed with courtesy and respect. He encourages students to make observations and even disagree with the textbook author, as long as there is logic behind it. Great class for students who like to think and be challenged. Recommended!
One of the most interesting classes, and professors, I've had at GVSU. I love how the lectures are more of a group discussion that encourages student participation. I learned a lot about society and how it works and the various viewpoints that exist. The class really makes you think, and not just memorize things out of a book. Highly recommended
Lots of cool stuff in the class: group discussions, documentaries, research assignments, exams, and quizzes. None are difficult but you have to put forth an effort. Instead of just memorizing stuff, Lockard requires students to think and make observations. Cool, class, cool prof. Take this class if you want something a bit different.
I liked how he quickly switched the class to online format when classes were cancelled due to COVID, Provided weekly updates, make everything easy to understand, and held twice a week live virtual office hours so students could ask questions. Really good guy who gives everyone a chance to get a good grade. I wish he taught more classes.
Great prof with cool insights into sociology. Class format is a mix of classroom discussions, documentaries, videos, research, exam and quizzes. Lots of viewpoints discussed during the semester, all with respect and courtesy. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned from an "elective" class. Lots of assignments, but not difficult.
After a few weeks, I began to really understand and appreciate Lockard and his class. If you pay attention, and do the assignments, you start to learn about society , how it works, and how it affects you. I like the variety of stuff in class. Lockard gives everyone a chance to get a good grade. Participation matters. Recommended!
I loved this class. All assignments are clearly listed in the syllabus with due dates so there are no surprises. Readings, quizzes and exams are all online. Small research projects and essays are not graded harshly. If you go to class, participate in the discussions, and due your assignments on time, you will learn and get a good grade.
If you have to take a SOC class, this is the prof you want. Don't bother with any of the others. Ended up liking the class, learned a few things, and got a good grade. However, I did show up to class, did all of the assignments, and participated in the weekly discussions. Hint: follow the guidelines for the research paper. Highly recommended!
I love this prof. Told us the goal was to help us learn to think for ourselves as we are the "next generation of leaders." How inspiring is that is to a freshman! This class had lots of stuff that will help me in the future. All assignments clearly listed in the syllabus and students are given responsibility for their own success or failure.
Smart, intelligent, caring professor. His stated goal is to help student develop their thinking skills, which I really appreciated. Lots of different types of assignments--something for everyone. Do you have to work for an "A,", yes, but it is not that difficult. Those who attend class and think do well. Those who are slacker, don't do well.
Great teacher! Much better than anyone one else in the Soc department. I wish he taught more classes. Unique teaching style, which I really liked, which puts the emphasis on students thinking and making observations, not just memorizing stuff. Participation in classroom discussions in important. Also like the "lifelong learning" items.
I agree with the previous review, Dr. Lockard should teach more classes. He is way better than any of the full-time staff in the SOC department. I highly recommend his class to anyone who wants to learn more than just what is in the textbook. I learned a lot that will help me in other classes and in life. Dr. Lockard is highly recommended!
Everything I was looking for in a prof! Syllabus with all assignments and due dates listed, group discussions that went beyond the textbook, a variety of assignments, and a teacher who really cared. Smart guy that gives everyone a chance, but don't be a slacker. Do ALL the assignments and you'll do well. I also learned a lot! Highly recommend.
I loved Prof Lockard! He was very clear on what was expected and was very understanding with any issue you had!! The midterm and final are easy if you went to class and took notes. Some advice is to start the research paper as early as possible it will make your life so much easier! Also if you participate in class it makes the time go faster.
Best professor ever! I loved his class as he taught not just sociology, but also about leadership, making observations, and speaking your mind. Lots of great classroom discussions (instead of lectures) which were great! Very clear criteria on assignments. I would take any class he teaches. Highly recommended.
Best professor ever! I love how all assignments are clearly outlined in the syllabus with due dates. Group discussions instead of lectures and he promotes a variety of different viewpoints. Encourages students to express their opinions on key subjects. Class participation is important. Not an easy A, but not difficult either. I learned a lot!
Most inspirational teacher I have ever had. Encourages students to maximize their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. I love how he added "Life long lessons" to the course. He made an impact when he told us our opinions and ability to make observations were important as "we are the next generation of leaders." Highly recommended!
Dr. Lockard is a great professor and the only reason I took a SOC class. Interesting topics are covered in group discussions, and the assignments are meaningful. I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I like the extra "lifelong learning lessons" he adds to the class. Highly recommended!
Outstanding class, outstanding prof! It was great how he structured the course with classroom discussions, documentaries, essays, selected readings, quizzes and exams. He gave everyone a chance to express their thoughts and ideas on key subjects that we will be dealing with as future leaders. Loved the class, loved Lockard. Highly recommended!
