Good guy. Passionate about material. Prepare to hear a lot about his studies with a tribe in Mexico. Go to TA reviews and don't lose atten. points and it's fairly easy. 4 tests, 4th=final, not compreh. Perfect att.= 2pt on fin. avg. Little reading.
Interesting and clear. I bombed the first test but ended up with a B. I would reccommend this prof.

studied abroad with him, and taken a few classes with him. awesome teacher, really reliable, and identifies well with students. quick witted.
Very clear, tests were great just pay attention to the slide shows, the same slides are on the test. Very passionate about his work, slide shows were interesting, nice professor. I missed some class because I was out of the country for a few days and still got an A. Highly recommended!!
Dr. McGee is a great professor. His classes were enjoyable and interesting. He is very passionate about is work and it shows. He is truly one of the best professors I have had.

very fun, and witty. most interesting subject matter covered with easy and actual points of view. studied abroad with him, and it was awesome! take any of his classes, they open your eyes!
Very good class. Great teacher
All-ego, all the time. Can be quite interesting when he's not tooting his own Lacandon-Maya horn.
Lacandon Maya are very lucky people for his existance. I adore him. I still have dreams where he is present. Perhaps the most impact of any professor I had. Sexy to boot!! Absolute pleasure to learn from.

pompous, arrogant & assuming.
McGee's a really intelligent guy, and he knows his subject cold. However, as previous raters have noted, he's more than a little arrogant. That said, I'd certainly take another class from him, because his lectures were always interesting.
Pontificates about his world views 75% of the time. Aside from that, the course decent. He always has a few odd test questions. Show up to class and you will do well.
A bit of a nag. Likes to insert a lot of "editorial notes" where he spouts a lot of biased opinions about how the world should work. But his course is easy and his lectures are clear and to the point (when he's not "editorializing"). The hardest part about this course is just attending. Material is interesting, though, so it's worth going to.
Very interesting course and Professor. Great lectures, interesting reading, wonderful class discussions. Would take another class from him, anytime. Do the reading, do the extra credit, show up for class every day, speak up once and awhile and you will do fine.
Biased: yes; arrogant: yep. Still a very interesting class. He's a smart fella, and really does try to get students to THINK (always a plus). Bit of a joker, too. Attendance required for the most part. Overall, very interestin' class, and not very hard either. Does toss out some odd test questions, as another said. &c. &c. &c.
Brilliant man. Expects a lot from his students. Rewards hard work, but it can take effort to get on his good side. Offers good feedback and is a good resource to use at the university. Is he arrogant? Yes, but that shouldn't hurt anyone.
McGee knows his subject material inside and out. Straight up multiple choice tests, but of a more difficult caliber (good luck guessing your way though). His arrogance will throw off the young saplings in the university scene, but for those of you who appreciate a professor who isn't afraid to deflate stupid public sentiment, you will love him.
I have had McGee for several classes now and I'm still not sure I understand who he is. He is sometimes approachable, sometimes encouraging, and sometimes nice. You can bounce ideas off of him but don't expect him to hold your hand. If you have poor attendance he will NOT help you outside of class.
I hear someone complaining about McGee just about every day, even to other professors. I like McGee and he's been very helpful. Never had a single complaint that wasn't resolved. Not sure if I would recommend him to a non-major though.
Amazing professor. I highly recommend him to anyone who values a good teacher (which is rare these days). Attendance not mandatory, but attend. All lectures are too interesting to miss. Also, exam questions can come from things said in lecture. Read the chapters. Answer study guide questions. Give yourself time to prepare for exams--you'll do fine.
He's is a very good professor. I definitely wouldn't recommend him for non-majors, because he goes into GREAT detail in lecture and on exams. I'm not an Anthro major, but I really liked the class. I had to study for days prior to exams and still got low Bs. Interesting, but very difficult for non-majors.
Dr. McGee is a good professor and his lectures are informative and entertaining, but his exams are too long, and unfair. I attended every lecture, read all the material, and studied for the exams and I never made anything higher than a B-. If you want an A, you have to do the extra credit assignments.
I had to take this course and originally I was excited, but he strikes me as arrogant. I don't like his personality, although he seems friendly enough for help. Gives 10 quizzes instead of tests which I would read for and still make a bad grade on. Overall, not a good system, and an aggravating professor.
Professor McGee is very opinionated (but hilarious)and if you cant handle a opinion other than your own, do not take his class. While attendance is not mandatory, you should go to make sure not miss the quizzes and important material that he will put on the final. Overall the class is fun and you can pass it easily with regular attendance.
Class isn't mandatory, but you should go. Gives quizzes every week instead of tests. Quizzes are easy if you read over the notes and read the ONE chapter the quiz is over. Anyone who did badly in this class probably didn't show up for lecture. Mostly interesting, talks about his research often. To people saying he's arrogant, ALL professors are.
He was an awesome professor, does talk about the Lancandon Maya a lot but personally I didnt mind. Easy class to pass if you read the book and notes before the weekly quizes and the final is over his book which wasn't too hard. Overall I really enjoyed this class
a wonderful professor. although opinionated, he makes it clear what is factual and what is his own view on subjects. Very insightful and a good lecturer.
I loved his class! I looked forward to attending class everyday (I took it over the summer). I like the idea of a weekly quiz and the questions are over his lecture materials and a few from the textbook. So definitely attend class.
He is not very clear or helpful. His lectures are really long and boring. The material didn't really cover what we thought "Latin American Culture" would entail. Only assignments are boring readings.
Loved his lectures and his class overall, but if you don't show up, you'll barely scrape by cause he gives pop quizzes EVERY WEEK. Very interesting, clear powerpoints, always multiple choice in the quizzes. Great prof, but very egotistical and shuts down students who ask questions in class. Take good notes.
Dr. McGee is the real deal. Do the readings and be prepared to answer questions in class. Attendance is mandatory, checks role every day. After two or three absences you lose points. Don't fluff your papers, he likes them straight to the point. If you go one word over the word count requirement you will get half credit, no exceptions.
This was a Latin American culture class, but it wasn't until the last couple of weeks that we learned about that. He is a very opinionated Marxist and that made class a bit uncomfortable. If he thinks a question is stupid he will embarrass the one who asked it. He is smart, but very arrogant, so be careful. Take at your own risk.
10 quizzes and an extra credit quiz. No tests. He asks you lots of questions about his life and some questions about the material. Pay attention to the examples given in class, that's usually what he asks about. His lectures are very confusing and not very straightforward. Overall he's a nice guy and an adequate professor.
I took this course during the summer and got a B. He's passionate about Athro but doesn't expect you to be. He does expect you to read though. If you take notes you can guess the specific info that will be used on the test as you're reading through the book. So, if you have a good memory, you're golden. Could've made an A with more effort.
McGee is a great professor and I wish the class wasn't so big but other than that the class was fun and he tries not to offend anyone but people still get offended which is annoying. Just let the man teach! Soak up all the knowledge the quizzes are pretty easy if you study just DO NOT MISS QUIZ DAY you will regret it!! McGee is awesome!!!!
He really opened my eyes to a lot of debated topics, and his lectures helped me decide where I stood on these topics. Gets an attitude only when people make stupid comments. He doesn't post power points online, so if you want the notes for the test, you have to go to class. Take this class if you want to learn something about life.
Take his classes abroad in Canterbury, England!!! I did twice. best time of my life and you learn so so much!
Absolutely loved this class. Lectures were very interesting and engaging. Textbook is a must. As long as you do the reading and show up to class, this will be an easy A.
Absolutely loved this class! The lectures are long but he keeps it light by making lots of jokes. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives a quiz a week, but he doesn't tell on what day. He uses the book and lecture on the quizzes. He gives 10 quizzes and one extra credit quiz, the final is over his book. Get his book you will need it for the final.
Mcgee is one of my favorite professors, he tells things how they are and without sugar coating. you will talk about sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and those with a stick up their butts have walked out during his lectures which is bad ass. there are weekly quizzes that are kind of sporadic. study and read for them and you'l do well.
You must remember to have an open mind when taking this class, because the topics discussed in lectures could come off as offensive but he's filled with so much knowledge so it's interesting to listen to his lectures because they're so objective! I'm an anthro major & this is the only course I've liked so far. Study & read the chapters, easy A.
I loved his class! He is clear on what he expects and his grading process is fair. He gives a lot of quizzes so mandatory is a must. He is clear and detailed about his topics. He is easy to understand and willing to explain. He doesn't allow electronics, except laptops to take notes on. Take good notes and read the material and you will do fine!
Hilarious!! He always connects the subjects to real world situations that have or are happening in Texas. Right before his quizzes he always tells a joke so that we aren't as nervous for it. The quizzes can be a bit challenging if you don't read your textbook.. other than that, he's amazing.
Super cool guy, always tells a joke before the quizzes to make you laugh so you aren't so worried. knows a lot about his field so hes got tons of interesting stories. make sure you pay attention in class because there's questions on the quizzes that are just from things he told the class. class is never boring and he loves to answer questions
McGee is fantastic, he has real witty jokes before every quiz. Quizzes usually once or twice a week, but not hard. Read once thought eh textbook and look at your notes and you should be fine. He has educated insight and mature viewpoints on real heated topics like religion, race, etc. Truly inspirational to be a part of his class, I recommend him.
Very witty and is very passionate about anthropology. He's kind of a real-life indiana jones. My favorite professor so far, make sure to go to class (although attendance isn't mandatory), because most of his quiz material is shown on in class slide shows. His lectures keep you interested, which is rare amongst professors.
Mcgee was a fun lecturer, and did a good job of encouraging participation. The bulk of our grades were weekly quizzes, which are usually based straight off of his lectures. The final killed me, though. It was all about some random stuff he talked about the last couple of class sessions. Definitely would meet with him or a TA when studying.
I've taken multiple courses from McGee but this one is my favorite so far! You will read the textbook every week, but you will love it. McGee is the best professor on campus!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. AVOID MCGEE AT ALL COSTS. He is very liberal and incorporates his personal beliefs into his lectures. The material is incredibly boring and he talks for the entire class time. His powerpoints are not on TRACS. I attended every class and worked/studied extremely hard and he still gave me an 89. Literally the worst professor.
Dr. McGee really does know what he is talking about and makes a lot of jokes. Weekly or biweekly tests depending on how fast he goes through the material but if you show up and really listen to his lecture and take notes the quizzes will be easy. Extra credit quiz at the end of the year can really boost you. Really passionate and interesting guy.
McGee really is a great lecturer, and his class was really enjoyable if you're interested in Anthropology. His view point is more humanistic than "liberal". Does not require attendance but there are weekly quizzes at the end of each chapter. Make sure you get his Lacondon book at the beginning of the semester, the price goes way up if you wait.
I cant stand him. The class is so hard and he expects so much out of us, but doesnt teach us anything!! He rambles and gets off topic and then fails us when we dont understand the material when its his fault for not teaching us!
Great professor! Has a lot of experience in the Anthropology field. Very cool guy. Doesn't like phone use during class but nice. Class isn't hard as long as you study for the quizzes and show up to class to take notes. Really teaches well! Got an A with not too crazy amount of work.
He is really passionate about what he's teaching so it makes the content fun to learn, even if you're not interested in the subject. Even if the section he is lecturing about is boring, he finds a way to keep your attention. All quizzes are 20 questions and you can pass them without reading the book. No homework, only quizzes. Some extra credit.
Favorite class, favorite professor. He was fun and funny and a good guy that really cares about what he is teaching. Going to class isn't mandatory but expected if you want a quality grade. On days I couldn't make it, I got the notes from a friend and still did well. Reading the book is important. He tells jokes before every quiz and its fun.
Professor McGee is a gem! Not only is hilarious and progressive, he truly is fascinated by what he teaches. Even if you aren't an anthro major, this class is one you don't want to miss. If you are conservative, I would not take this class as we discuss some controversial topics. Almost every class you have a quiz, over the prev lcture. Super easy!
SHOW UP FOR CLASS! He lectures off of powerpoints but doesn't post them online so you need to show up and take notes. Amazing lectures about really intense and relate-able issues :) all quizzes and final are online. I never used the textbook and got b's on the quizzes. Sometimes calls on people in class so if you're shy like me sit in the very back
Interesting lectures , stories & knew what he was talking about
Professor McGee has amazing lectures, if you are taking the notes you will have no problem passing the quizzes and tests. quizzes and tests are done online so you are able to use your notes.
Hes okay, but he really doesnt care about your grade at all. Theres a final paper and hes rough as hell on it. If you dont write the way he does you wont get an A. Would not take him again. I busted my ass on my paper and he gave me a C for it even tho he gave me an A on my outline.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He does not care about his students and grades overly difficult without giving you the information you need. I will never take a class with this professor again. Worked so hard on my research paper and he gave me a C saying it was inaccurate when he told me my outline and plan were perfect. Worst class ever!!!!!!
AMAZING! Every class is something interesting, and Dr. McGee is hilarious, engaging, and fun. He is obviously more interested in having his students come out of the class with new knowledge than he is in teaching for a test. The only grades are quizzes, which are easy if you go to class! His class is honestly the highlight of my week.
He's not the best. He does not post lectures, so if you don't show up, you're outta luck. The class is only quiz based so 11 quizzes make up your total grade. No midterm or final. But, the quizzes make no sense or even go along with the lecture. All done online, so you can google answers. He just makes the class harder than it needs to be.
Dr. McGee is an average professor. His class would be alot better is he wasn't so concerned about sharing his political ideologies. Quizzes are very hard and you must read his textbook and attend class to do well. I would recommend taking pictures of the slides as he moves very quickly and it is difficult to keep up and they are not posted on tracs
I liked him, he's funny! If you skip class you won't do well. Take good notes because the class is based off of 11 quizzes. You do have to get his book. I didn't read the entire thing. Study your notes for quizzes. I heard his study abroad was a fun time as well.
My fellow classmates said this course was difficult, but as long as you just do the homework it's a fairly easy A. McGee is not very forgiving, but his instructions are easy and straight forward. It's clear he loves his work. The class is just reading from his text, a quiz for each chapter (25Q's in 25min if you read it's easy), and 4 discussions.
Graded entirely by 10 weekly quizzes and a few low-weight discussion posts. The structure was simple, but there is only a 24hr window (Fri6pm-Sat6pm) to complete a quiz, with no leniency. If you miss the window, your grade drops an entire letter. Quiz is based on textbook. Might as well be taking the class from a robot, and not in a good way.
The concept is this class wasnt hard, but he made this class difficult. 25 questions in 25 minutes is ridiculous, like Im barely done reading the question & there goes my minute. Honestly, hes kind of rude. He doesnt even teach. He just posts links & tells you to read. Thats not a very good professor. Overall I didnt like him 0/10
I am an Anthropology major with a 3.89 GPA and I am currently failing this class. Professor McGee only grades 8 abstracts and a final paper. McGee's feedback is terrible and he is an extremely tough grader. I wrote my first abstract and got a 2/10 and I am currently on my 5th and it looks like I will not graduate. BEWARE!
Professor McGee constantly complains that he has a heavy work load of 400+ students, his quizzes are ridiculously made. 25 questions in 25 minutes is insane. He's extremely rude and in my opinion, in the wrong profession. There is no real direction for the class, I feel like I taught myself. Do not recommend choosing him. 0/10.
Dr. Mcgee is is the worst professor I have had in my 3 years at Texas State. He closes weekly quizzes on Saturdays at 6pm? Why doesn't he make it due at midnight like every other professor? I turned in one assignment on time but canvas messed up and counted it as late and he had no mercy and was extremely rude to me in the emails exchanged.
as someone with ADHD, i can say this class was honestly not very difficult. it is not very hard to take 25 minutes to take his quizzes during the window they are open for. he clearly loves what he does and the book is well-written and i enjoyed taking notes on it. this class isnt hard at all if you manage your time well and actually try.
McGee was super funny and the class was incredibly interesting, would take again if I could :)
Hes not considerate whatsoever, so make sure you turn in assignments on time. Dont bother asking to reopen or a retry any assignments. He was very harsh when I asked.
The course work wasn't hard ten quizzes with 25 questions in 25 minutes. His emails are a little off-putting, don't expect any help with the work. I wouldn't retake him, simply on his professionalism.
Dr. McGee is an amazing professor. This course is crazy interesting and really easy if you just read the e-book. You'll have weekly quizzes of 25 questions in 25 minutes which is totally doable if you're not trying to cheat. Literally all the answers on in the book, just pay attention.
Doesn't care about your grade. Unprofessional and off putting in emails. Only has quizzes open Friday 6pm to Sat 6pm and complains about how many students ge has. I learned more about his political opinion than I did about studying anthropology and other cultures. Only has lectures on Wed, but doesn't record them.
Although it is an online class he does not excuse technical difficulties of any sort. I would not take him again just because he does not seem to understand that problems occur sometimes and that we're just students trying to pass the class.
A terrible professor who did the bare minimum and was overall rude and unforgiving. I have nothing nice to say about him or the class so I'm stopping here. 2/10, will never take a class that he is running again
As long as you read the textbook and do all the quizzes you should be fine. He did one quiz grade which was the lowest and I did the extra credit which got me to a B. Do the assignments too!
When I went for clarification and assistance for an assignment he told me that I was just being prideful and that he didn't have time to help students. He didn't get his grades in until 2 weeks after they were due either after sending an email berating students asking for an extension. I will never take this professor again.
He was alright- just a very picky guy in terms of grammar and his grading. Three quizzes and four assignments that contribute to the final project. A lot of the questions have questions specific to things he experienced while with the Maya so make sure you take some notes. But also, he doesn't care if you show up to class or not. Not a hard class.
McGee's online anthro class is very easy. You read one chapter a week and take an open note quiz on it. That makes up your grades. It is very easy to succeed in this class. There are office hours and online zooms for questions about the chapter. As long as you do the readings, take the notes, and take the quiz on time you will do well.
I took this course online so I don't have much to say about the professor himself. The only thing that I noticed is that he was very strict on deadlines and make ups, so you had to be on top of it. However, the class was all from the textbook and required very detailed notes. Grades only came from the chapter quizzes which were always due on Sat.
I take this class online so it's nice that I can work at my own pace and not have to join a Zoom. I do attend his office hours though so I do believe that has helped my grade so far; but the class isn't the worst. I like that there's about 1 large assignment once every two weeks. He's strict on deadlines and grades harsh; ask questions to succeed!
Took his online anthropology class, class was easy but not very engaging. Things I thought were weird: He requires you to buy the textbook HE wrote that's hosted on a very outdated site. First chapter included a link to a random blog post that talked him up. Textbook also claims that women's periods sync up (scientifically disproven). Weirdo vibes.
Doesn't offer extra credit, extremely rude in his emails (makes you never want to email him ever again). Will absolutely take no recommendations and will accuse you of trying to "change course policies" Oh! And don't forget! Unless you want your emails blasted on the canvas announcement page, don't email him!!! :)
I took his class online, so I was never in direct contact with him, but overall, the class was very easy and straightforward. Read the chapter and take the quiz. He stuck to his syllabus making everything clear. Personally, this was my easiest class this semester.
Grades consisted of weekly quizzes due on Saturdays. They're 25 questions in 25 minutes. Some of these were tough and required deeeep notes. What got me was that a couple quizzes were mislabeled, causing me to take notes on the wrong chapters. Could've gotten an A if everything was labeled correctly.
I did the online course and it was one of my easier classes. It was difficult to access the textbook for the first month for everyone and the canvas quizzes are 25 questions for 25 mins which was a little stressful.
honestly it wasn't bad, but there was a lotttt of reading. also, you only get once chance to redo an assignment, so dont skip any quizzes, this dude has no remorse.
This guy warm seemed to have a monopoly on intro to Anthropology. That's a shame cause neither one of them are worth the time. Do they use the textbook?Yes! They wrote it. They like to use it.They like to sell it to Texas State students. That should be a conflict of interest, but it seems in their department. It's OK. Oh, and it's terrible.
The only grades for this class were the very detailed quizzes. His reviews over Zoom were helpful but not a whole lot. Overall, This class is hard, but as long as you take excellent and detailed notes on the chapter, you should do fine on the quizzes.
Oml do not take the professor! Makes u buy HIS OWN TEXTBOOK then plays u in ur face with the way he organizes his units. Then gives wayyy too many test and gives u 25 minutes to take 25 questions. if u don't want to be bald by the end of the semester then don't tale this class.
Class was just 11 quizzes and one paper (350 words) and all you had to do to pass was read the chapter before taking the test and you'd be fine. I def would recommend take Dr. McGee's class it was amazing and he was an even better professor!! And def see about going to England with his abroad program in the summer!!!
He has scheduled times to come in for questions and provides a sheet of questions/ things to review for tests. There was one question I could not find the answer to and so I went to his meeting. He did not know the answer and told me to "read the book and find it." The whole point of meeting was because I could not find it. Would not take again
Quizzes were open all semester but confusing as the unit quiz numbers don't go with the chapter numbers. It was an ok class, sort of weird to access the textbook, some questions were very specific to the text so you can't just skim.
This was an online class; students had to teach themselves by reading a textbook and watching videos. As long as you take SUPER detailed notes and don't procrastinate you will be ok. The layout of the class is confusing, the unit number in Canvas is completely different form the chapter number in the textbook. Be ready for a time commitment.
This is an online class, however the set up is not good. He makes you buy a text book that doesn't make the unit quizzes. Also there is no extra credit, so if you have a 79.64 he would not round it up.
The quizzes can be hard but as long as you get them done before the semester is over, you'll be fine. Don't be intimidated.
The class was okay, but you have to put in a lot of work. You're only graded by 12 proctored quizzes and a writing assignment that the TAs grade harshly on (class avg was a 50). Read the textbook, watch the videos, and make very DETAILED notes! The quizzes are very specific to the textbook and less common knowledge.
