Impossible to follow, Writes with his left hand as he erases with his right and talks to the blackboard. Avoid him if possible

worst teacher i've ever had. You will not like his teaching style at all. You will want to kill yourself sitting through his lectures.
Do not take! Most boring, hardest to follow prof ever!
Very unclear on the direction of the class. Very boring and very hard to understand. Writes EVERYTHING out on the board. Do not recommend.
Doctor Neill is tough, but you do learn a lot in his class. If you are in college to be educated take his class, because you can learn quite a bit. He goes off on funny tangents of stories that are quite interesting. Contrary to the other ratings, I enjoyed and took value out of his class. If you like to be challenged and entertained take him.
Dr. Neill at first did the whole chalkboard thing with the annoyance of following him across the room writing and erasing like the previous comment said, he then switched to a projector and it was worse, page floats to the right of the screen, writes over own words and talks really fast, changes out the pages before the class catches up.more to go!
He is extremely incompetent. As people say in Texas, he couldn't pour water out of a boot with instructions printed on the heel.

His lectures are somewhat boring but this guy's personality makes the class worthwhile. Always surprises you by telling random stories to relate concepts and truly wants his students to learn. Is a little harsh if you ask a stupid question or what he thinks is a stupid question. Still, I recommend taking this class.
He talks to you as if you already know everything
Not recommended
Terrible teacher do not take if it is your first economics class. Your grade is based solely on 3 tests and no extra credit or other assignments. Don't buy the book I never opened it once because he only tests you on the notes he gives you. Not very helpful at all and doesn't make sense because he teaches like everyone knows as much as he does.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I am a great student and this class was extremely challenging. He based all the tests on lecture notes, and randomn yet very specific opinions from the author of the textbook we were never asked to read. The test questions are formed to confuse you. I ended up with a B in the course after the class was curved.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Although Dr. Neal is a great guy and knew my name even though the class was a lecture, he expects too much of students. I am a straight A student and I worked extremely hard in this class and wound up with a B. Your grade is based off of only three tremendously hard tests. I do NOT recommend.
RUN! Run as fast as u can back to your advisor and change your teacher, this guy uses the projector and writes to fast and will change the paper with out caring and tell you it is in the text when its not! when the projector is broke he uses the chalk board writes with one hand and erases w/ the other. Also he talks as if you know what he knows! AH
He is the worst teacher i ever had in my life..I'm telling you..don't take this teacher..never..
He needs to give background for his teaching Math, some students memorize math
Good teacher, explains things at a level that most people should understand. You have to go, he takes attendance and gives extra credit for those with good attendance, and plus going just makes it easier.
GET OUT NOW! This guy is just ridiculous. Not only was the class extremely difficult, but it is incredibly boring. The worst part about it was that the guy took attendance in a 250 person class. Tests are extremely hard, and his coursepack and notes given in class are difficult to understand. Ended up with a B, only after he curved the class.
Professor Neil cares about the material and will help any student. The course pack provided for env. econ cheaper than any textbook I?ve had in an upper level course. The best advice is to come to class and stay on top of the reading. He jokes he provides the answers to the test. He is a great professor. A little intimidating at first, but fair.
Great teacher, interesting presentation, and very valuable asset if you take the time to listen and review the presented material. One of the reasons I began studying economics.
I would not recommend this teacher, especially if it is your first economics class. He assigns a course pack, which was much cheaper than a textbook, but to me was completely useless. I am a pretty good student and eventually borrowed a friends textbook from a different teacher, and taught myself the material because his course pack did not help me
I was very cautious about taking this teacher because of previous comments but he is one of the best teachers I've ever had he explains things clearly and gives you a study guide that follows the tests perfectly although I did not use the book once because it had nothing to do with the class.
SLOPY HAND WRITING! Very repetitive talks about the same thing over and over?. Then repeats the same thing again The study guide is almost the test to the T Really enthusiastic almost too enthusiastic If you go to class, and try to pay attention, you should do well
Worst professor Ive ever had. Im taking him spring 2010 right now, and hes terrible. i scheduled an appointment with him during his office hours, and he never showed up and never apologized for not showing up. he doesnt care about his students or what you get in his class. this is the hardest class ive ever taken, and he in no way cares on helping.
worst prof ever. went to 3 of his office hours, 1 he didnt show up to & the other he was 15 minutes late to. he wont help you with the homework at all, and told me not to email him if i have any questions. the coursepack he wrote so he gets all the money for it, his notes are by hand in class& are illegible.he doesnt care about his students at all.
worst teacher ive ever had, & puts western to shame. hes loud, takes off his shoe and sock during class to make a point, and cancels class without emailing students. theres only 3 tests in the class and theyre impossible. the coursepack makes no sense and he hand writes all of his notes which are terrible.im missing like every third word in my notes.
i agree, worst handwriting in the world. dont bother buying the coursepack it makes no sense bc he wrote it. hes a terrible teacher and shouldnt even be allowed to teach. avoid at all costs!!!
his handwriting sucks. don't even show up, you can pass by just reading over the study guides that he emails you.
I'm in his class right now and it's honestly a joke. He's not helpful, you cannot read his handwriting or follow the notes u take. There's not enough homework or any quizzes so you basically have to get a B or A on your test if you want a semi good grade
The worst teacher ever i believed that i could get past all the bad reviews and take his class anyways, but in the end all the reviews were right. honestly save your money and find another teacher because this one never made sense
Trust the warnings dont take this class!
He's left handed and he writes out all notes. If you don't have to take him I wouldn't but it's easy to pass.
He writes the notes in left-handed chicken scratch and moves through them extremely fast. The tests are multiple choice but still pretty difficult. He takes attendance but allows you to miss 3 classes before docking EC points. Overall, a very boring and confusing class with moments of comedy sprinkled in by Dr. Neill.
Worst teacher ive had in my life.he doesnt care about his studetns at all, listen to warnings on this site before taking him! i had to withdraw from his class this semester, making me lose my scholarship.i went from a 3.4 gpa,to having to drop his class.he doesnt care, has terrible handwriting. if you want to continue enjoying college, dont take him.
Not an easy course, but not a tough one. Dr. Neill was extremely generous with the extra credit, and still half the class got a C. Tests are multiple choice, but don't let that fool you - they are wordy and the answers tricky. I think that's why everyone did so poorly; it's one thing to memorize key points, but another to actually conceptualize the
Somewhat arrogant like the rest in the Department. Went to his office to ask for help three times and each time he just told me to re-read the notes. Attendance extra credit helped. Exams are multiple choice, but tricky. However, the study guide is pretty much what is on the test. I would chat with him about his Volvos and that's how I got a C
I feel a lot of these comments are wrong. The material was difficult but he was always willing to explain and offer extra help. He provides excellent study guides to prepare you for the tests, which are nearly identical. He uses great examples in class and the coursepack is filled with reading that is actually fun. One of my favorite professors!
The material was pretty tough; not a blow off ECON class like I was hoping. All you have to do to get a good grade is go to class and work hard on his study guides for the exams - the questions on those will be the same as the test questions.
I attended class 6 times, and got a C. I missed 1 of the 2 homework assignments. This class is very easy, but not for lack of work. His note packet is mandatory and costs about $80 and as far as I could tell the most recent article was from 1991, so a bit outdated. His study guide is 100% word for word what will be on the test, but without answers.
This guy hand writes notes that are very difficult to understand. Had it not been for this problem I might not consider him such a difficult teacher. The notes he presented you with were really not to the test either. I would avoid him at all costs really. He needs to type his notes/make them available online.
He's not great when you have him for the lower level econ, but once you get into the advanced courses he is a lot cooler. His examples help and the study guides are a carbon copy of his exams, but the tests are still a little tough.
Despite the bad reviews I took economics with Dr. Neill. Horrible, horrible idea. I'm an A/BA student and I'm almost positive I'm going to fail this class. He makes it so hard! It's based off two exams and a final. If you fail those you're done. Trust the bad reviews, everything they say is completely true about him.
His class is very hard. He is funny, but that doesn't make up for the difficulty. He throws in a couple homework assignments and attendance was extra credit which you will desperately need to pass. Do the study guides and you might just make it by. His grading scale for a C is very easy to get though.
He is a good teacher. He is interesting and knows what he is talking about. His accent is great and he just loves making the class laugh with his stories. It is kinda hard, but easy if you just do the study guides. The tests are just like the study guides. Read the articles and do the study guides and you'll pass just fine.
good teacher and pretty smart. Exams were word for word off the study guide so it is easy to pass. Gave extra credit for attendance too
Not very helpful towards students. However tests are exact replicas of study guides so as long as you pay attention and can get the right answers the class is an easy A. Smart guy and taught me a lot economics wise. He was quite arrogant and talked down to students which wasn't pleasant though.. No textbook was cool
If you did not get a good grade in this class you didn't go, didn't do the study guides, or you are dumb. He doesn't offer a lot of help to students, but you shouldn't need it. The study guides are exactly whats on the test, and he gives extra credit for attendance.
His lecture is 50 minutes of him writing on colored paper with a felt marker that is being projected via doc cam and you vigorously trying to keep up. Don't expect to say a word during those 50 minutes and if he catches you on your phone you will be marked absent. Attendance is mandatory, but good luck passing without these notes & extra credit
His notes are worthless. He asks questions and doesn't even answer them in his own notes. The homework is all on government websites and good luck asking for help. study guide is a replica of the final, but its still extremely hard to find the correct answers because the study guide is so vague. Bronco study zone could hardly help.
Professor Neill's ECON 2020 was the hardest course I have taken so far. His notes are nearly illegible and he was not willing to help me or other students when asked. The entire course was based on 2 exams, 3 homework assignments, and 1 final. As an honors student, I failed 2 of the 3 exams and the homework saved my grade. Do not take his section.
Professor neill is a funny guy with some of the stories he tells. No text book as a reference or to try and learn on your own. In lectures he write notes out but you can barley read what he writes. exams are exactly what the study guides said. if your majoring in economics i would advise not to take him because he offers no help to you
Worse prof I've ever had. Writes faster than you can think and won't go back for anyone. Also even if you can write fast enough you better listen to him becaus you can read what he days. If he has actuall corse material he would be a good lecturer.
attending class is extremely important to catch all important facts. he also emails out notes in word documets that go much more in depth than he does in class. missing 3 or less classes gives you 8% extra credit in class. highly recommended teacher
lectures are boring but necessary. no electronics so be prepared to write. failed the class bc I DIDN'T STUDY FOR THE FINAL which was my fault - not his. He gives you the exam questions as a study guide. All exams are multiple choice. Obviously there is a lot of studying for this class. He hands you the material but you have to do the work.
You would think that a professor with a doctorate would know what he is doing. He has the worst hand writing you will ever see, and the whole class is him lecturing. There is no book, and even though the study guides are almost identical to the exam, The answers are almost impossible to find. Good luck with his notes. Worst teacher I've had yet!
Dr. Neill is extremely intelligent. He gives you the material, but expects you to study twenty five+ hours a week. His lectures are him writing notes with a felt-tip marker on paper projected via doc cam. However, he does send the class the typed notes. If you take this course, you will need to attend class, study a lot, and be WELL-PREPARED.
Beware! This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. No textbook to fall back on, only point opportunities came from 3 exams and 2 homework assignments. Will provide inconsistent notes 'transcribed' from those he HAND WRITES during the lecture. These are to be used to complete his vague and incomplete study guides. AVOID
Professor Neil has an enjoyable sense of humor. His analogies are rather funny as well if you're paying attention. There is NO BOOK, he provides you with written notes; beware, his handwriting is hard to decipher. Tests are hard. Study Guides are hard. I'm not sure I learned anything. Attendance for points. I felt lost mostly all semester.
Good lord where do I begin. I made the mistake of taking his class for a dual enrollment course. There was no homework, only tests. Compound that with the fact that he wouldn't entertain questions and his notes and lectures were atrocious, it was a miracle that I got a B.
He is by far the worst teacher I have ever seen. His handwriting makes you question what language it is, along with the fact that he covers half the page with his hand when writing (he is a lefty). He speeds through notes in class and never answers questions. Do not take this class, even if you plan on studying hard, its impossible to follow.
He kind of gets a bad rep however I'd recommend his class to anyone because the study guide for every test/exam is literally the exact test with all the questions. Definitely a difficult course though. Must go to class but you get extra credit for attendance. Lectures are fine and plays good music before class starts. Just study and you'll be fine.
don't take his class if you won't go, won't study hard, or can't keep up with a fast lecture.
In class he hand writes the notes, while he talks. It goes really fast & his hand writing is horrible. He also goes really fast. The study guides are exactly like the exam, but he makes them almost impossible to fill out. He makes up himself, in these little story lines. TAKE THIS COURSE WITH SOMEONE ELSE. Attendance 8pts extra credit that it
Jon was a terrible teacher. He would hand write his presentations and his handwriting was terrible. He would rush through his lesson without really teaching. I only passed by the grace of god. I failed every test but did very well on the homework. He curves your grade which is good.
This professor doesn't use a book, there's maybe 1 home work assignment assigned through the whole semester. It all relies on exams which are super hard because they're based on his lectures. In his lectures he does hand written notes, his hand writing is barely legible. I would recommend avoiding his class because you will have the hardest time.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! He is rude, unhelpful and he will call you out during the lecture to belittle students. Keep in mind if you are a hard working student with a question he will not answer them.
I don't understand why so many people don't like Dr. Neill, his lectures are super entertaining as he teaches through stories and he doesn't make you buy a textbook. Sure you only have around five assignments, but if you do the study guide, you should be able to pass the tests. He does demand your respect, but honestly he deserves it.
Dr. Neill isnt so bad if you just learn how to take his class. This is my second semester taking him for econ. Don't sign up if u arent going to go to class or take notes. The study guide is literally the test but instead of MC its fill in the blank. If you write down everything he does and look at the online notes the class is easy.
Terrible teacher. Impossible class to pass, his handwriting is TERRIBLE. He's just grumpy all the time and he moves so fast when teaching its impossible to catch up. His handwriting is legit ineligible so if you miss something or don't hear him you're screwed. Hated this class so much, worst grade I've gotten because of him.
Easy A. Study guides are exact copies of the exam. Theres 3 exams and 2 homeworks total. Extra credit for attendance. No textbook. Only complaint is laptops arent allowed and he hand writes his notes but its still legible since he reads them as he writes. Some topics were confusing but he knows what hes doing!
Im so grateful that I somehow passed but he is so unapologetically rude its unbelievable! Even going to his after hours he is rude and unwelcoming, makes you feel dumb for not knowing the material when its his job to teach you. His handwritten notes are sloppy and he goes entirely too fast. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Just a terrible professor. He is completely unhelpful and his lecture notes are written by him but they are absolutely nonsensical. His recorded lectures as well as the notes are endless rambling with no clear instruction in sight. There is no support for you to know if you are actually doing anything right. Avoid him.
In his online class for Micro you will spend your time reading through handwritten documents made by the professor. Study guides will be provided for the readings, and the exams will be based off these guides. He will not tell you if you're are doing anything correct on the guides so studying these guides for the exam is useless if the work is wron
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! DO NOT DO IT!! The only notes you are given were wrote by him and are super wordy and unprofessional. 3 exams and 3 quizzes ONLY. People constantly got 50% or worse on the exams and if it weren't for all the extra credit he gave, I would not have passed.
one of the worst teacher I have ever had, he was very rude and unhelpful all throughout the course. His online course is made up out of 3 exams and 3 quizzes, He also adds 3 Extra Credit assignments. He gives out a bunch load of reading and a couple of videos and that's all you will get from him all semester. Horrible professor.
Handwriting is dog water. He gets super upset all the same.
Lectures completely off his own thoughts, which makes up for most exam questions. The quizzes are easy, but he tells you how to do them and they don't have any benefit to actually understanding the material taught in the course.
WHAT EVER YOU DO DONT TAKE HIM. He hand writes all his notes and its impossible to read and his quizzes and exams make no sense while reading them. He also gets upset easily and bases the class off his own opinions.
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROFESSOR.!!!!!! Nothing he says in class makes sense. I never got above a 60 on any exam. If you do have to take this course with him just pray to god you get a C. WORST PROFFESOR EVER!!!!!
Do not take this class if you want an easier micro Econ experience. His lectures are not very good, all he does is talk and write it down with not very good handwriting. He is also left handed so if you miss what he says, good luck trying to read cause his hand is covering up the words, but you probably couldnt read them anyways. Barley passed.
Expect a C or lower in this class if you aren't willing to devote your life. Only reason I was able to do ok is because I studied 12 hours a week and recorded the lectures. Exams make no sense, he goes out of his way to trick you with no remorse. Exams are usually curved but not very helpful when the majority of the class gets a 36% Best of luck
Entire course grade was based on 9 tests and 3 exams that were written poorly by the professor. Dont expect to get anything better than a C if you dont take in every single lecture and the very long readings he expects you to read outside of class. And dont expect to get any decent notes as anything he writes down and presents is unreadable.
This class could have been so much more easy if it wasn't for the way he teaches the class. No textbook, illegible notes on the board, and the exams are confusing and unrelated to the lectures. Don't take this class with this professor if you can avoid it.
This man is the worst instructor i've ever had. Lectures make zero sense, so good luck passing the class.
There are three tests, three quizzes, and three extra credit quizzes. He tells you word for word what is on the quizzes, those will carry your grade. Tests are harder but do-able. Lectures have good information but will put you to sleep. Attendance was not for a grade but I do recommend going most days.
Avoid Neill if you can. Grade is based on 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and 3 extra credit assignments. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT IF YOU WANT TO PASS!! Neill handwrites all of his notes and is not very personable. He usually curves the exams because everyone fails, and he does not care to change his teaching strategy. 0/10 recommend, try to take someone else.
I would rather postpone my graduation than have to speak to this man. If I gave accurate adjectives to describe him this post would be removed. 'nuff said
This man has terrible handwriting so anything not typed is impossible to read. Plus, on top of that, he couldn't describe/explain how to solve 1+1 to a math genius. He has the grammar skills of a 3rd grader. He has few assignments and gives extra credit with 3 exams but you will be confused on all of them. Reading his notes is harder than economics
Professor is on the older side & is not very tech savvy. His handwriting is horrible and hard to read yet he has the audacity to hand write all the assignments and material. Most times it is super hard to hear and understand him. I drop the class last year just to be placed in the same class with the same teacher.
I feel like I have learned nothing from this man. He is confusing and often unclear. As my first experience in economics from this institution I am disappointed.
Took this class online during covid. As other reviews stated, not many exams. So, each one holds quite a bit of weight. I missed the first exam from my own negligence. Towards the end of the semester, Jon reached out to me asking about the circumstances around this missed exam and provided a make up opportunity since I was honest. Very surprising.
Neill uses incoherent lectures to try and teach you the material. His lessons are difficult to follow, and you won't learn a whole lot. There are 3 assignments, 3 quizzes, and 3 tests throughout the semester. The assignments and quizzes are easy but the tests are very difficult. He does do extra credit quizzes that will save your grade. Don't skip!
I think it is possible to pass this class provided you are good at math and read a lot. I haven't had any issues in this class yet, but I don't really like him on a personal level. If you do have trouble with something, good luck, as he's not in my experience, been very helpful. Not a nice guy.
I planned to rip this guy a new one on here but the 350 character limit could never describe how little this guy cares about this class and how poorly he taught it. TL;DR: Avoid this guy.
He is left-handed but as he writes it covers it up so you need to be fast when you are writing down what he is saying or you will miss it, because when he is done he is ready to move on even if you are not done copying the notes that he was just writing. He has lots of print-outs to read. Not many assessments to be graded on so do well on them.
Lectures explain very little and hard to read, so read the notes he has online. 3 tests, 6 quizzes, 3 extra credit assignments. Do good on these because extra credit will only help so much. He uses a lot of examples but doesn't really get to the point.
He can seem overwhelming at first, but I actually enjoyed his class. Three exams that are online and open-note. They're exact replicas of the study guide, so I'd suggest going through all the readings and completing those guides. Homework assignments are straightforward, and he offers lots of extra credit. Not very personable, but pretty funny.
I thought I understood econ until I took this class. Dr. Neill would often call students out in class and be very hard to work with. When I reached out for help he told me to just keep doing what I was doing even though that was obviously not working. Your grade is based on a couple tests and quizzes so make sure you are prepared for those.
By no means was this any easy course. I advise not taking this course with Professor Neill. You are graded based on 6 quizzes,3 exams and 3 extra credit quizzes. I would advise doing the extra credit(saves your grade). The in-person lectures are boring and give you no real information on economics. Do your self a favor and don't take this course.
Everything in this class is confusing, lectures are all over the place/questions on quizzes and exams are conversational and don't make any sense. He won't help, he will just tell you to re-read the assignment which you already don't understand. Also, there is no textbook, so the only way to study is notes or his confusing lecture sheets.
Took Econ in high school and was a breeze compared to this one. He handwrites all notes but doesn't show them for long. His quizzes and exams seem to make no sense, along with the study guides and online notes provided. I never have any idea of what i'm "learning" in his class, and am worried I won't pass. Would not recommend.
This class consisted of 3 exams, including the final exam. He gives you 6 total quizzes, two per unit (exam). He also provides a few extra credit quizzes, but nothing that could significantly benefit your grade. His lectures are typically just rants, and don't provide real exam material. Exam questions are trick questions "it depends". Stay away!
First things first, do not take this class with this professor. He hand writes his notes on a green sheet of paper where it is almost impossible to read his handwriting. The lectures can be difficult to follow and he will not offer you any type of help. The exams are open note but the assignments are also incredibly difficult to understand.
Class is overwhelming but with good notes during every class it was actually quite simple. The only bad things about him are his handwriting and selection of paper and markers. He writes the notes with you so it isn't hard to keep track of. Respectable guy. If you put in the effort the class isn't very challenging. Multiple extra credit opportunity
In the most respectable way, this is a cartoonishly bad instructor at times. This is the generic professor in a school movie which the main character has to study really hard to pass the class. Except that, this class lacked a sliver of satisfaction. The way of teaching, the materials to study, and the testing were all perfectly awful, Loved it.
This class is a GPA killer. You will be rewarded not by your participation but by your ability to understand ineligible notes and lectures. Abuse quizzes and extra credits as much as possible. They will hard carry your grade. The pass requirements are like 62 for a C. It's laughable how much I felt like I was wasting my time and money.
He gives you the questions to the quizzes before you take them so that as you go through the chapters you can have the questions in mind. But the way he does lectures is kind of weird, he hand rights everything he says down (no slides at all) and he talks in a weird way to understand (the tests are written how he talks). At least he is not boring.
Doesn't know how to use technology. He is retiring spring of '25 and you can tell he's checked out. All of his teachings are from his own lectures, not from a textbook and he doesn't know how to form cohesive sentences. This class is so confusing and I have basically taught myself.
noone ive ever talked to enjoyed this professor, he calls students out in rude ways, and talks in metaphors and awful handwriting. he also doesnt respond to emails with questions about the course. he is a cannon event at western basically, avoid his class if possible. gpa killer
In all honesty, I think it'd be of benefit to us all if Professor Neill retired. His lectures are nothing but a compilation of rambles and he essentially talks about absolutely nothing for an hour. His quizzes and notes are also very difficult to understand and he writes on a colored piece of paper with a marker so you can't read a thing he writes
I expected when I attended college a level befitting a university. That was the case, up until I met Dr. Neill and his joke of an economics class. I appreciate not having to purchase a textbook, but not if I have to bear his handwritten, personalized notes / material that takes outside research to understand. Dr. Neill is comical, not educational.
Professor Neill's lectures are a bit unconventional, but if you keep up with the material and utilize resources like Unstuck study, you can do well. His tests are challenging, but the course is manageable.
