If you study hard for his class, you can get an A. There was a huge curve. As long as you get the average (which was considered a B) or above the average, you're good. He is helpful, so do attend his office hours. It isn't a tough class, completely doable. Any Ochem class will be tough you just have to put your own time and effort into it.
He is the best professor I have ever came across. He is my mentor my Ph.D guide. He explains each and every problem so nicely that left me amused. He is a man full of knowledge. I am extremly grateful to him. I took an advanced synthesis class of him. It was just awasome...
Changed up the book so different from previous years. Knows his stuff but is pretty unorganized and jumps back and forth in chapters and is a rather ineffective teacher. Book isn't the greatest but is doable. He posts review problems that are similar to the exam so just do that before the exam. Pretty disappointing 1st semester O-chem professor :/
His tests are very fair, but very long. His TA's grade super hard, but if you turn your exam in he will give you more points! His study guide and worksheets are very useful, and the text book has good practice questions. He teaches what he wants to teach, so you get to skip everything dealing with math and naming molecules is much easier.
He is the best teacher i've had so far at The University of Arizona. Yes, the class is hard and requires a lot of work but, it is OChem. He is always very helpful in office hours, and as long as you put in the effort, he will help you get the best grade possible. His tests are hard but very fair and I would recommend him over all others.
Dr. Njardarson is not always clear when teaching and jumps around a lot, but he is fair in his tests and is a nice guy. The class is hard of course because it is ochem, but he is a good professor overall. Expect to do your own studying and maybe a little self teaching, but his reviews help tremendously. Overall not a bad professor, I've had worse.
Overall Jon is a good teacher. He only teaches you what is going to be on the test. Nothing more and nothing less. He posts review problems before each test that have every concept that he tests you on and usually those problems are more difficult. This class required a lot of studying but overall it easier than i expected.
Ochem is a hard course no matter who you take. That being said I am very happy I took it with Njardarson. He was very clear in class, and told us exactly what we needed to know. His practice tests are almost exactly the same as his tests, just different molecules. Highly recommend him.
He goes off topic a lot and will often lecture for 15 minutes before saying that he won't be testing over the material he just presented. He is not very helpful. He is not very approachable if you don't already understand the material already. After asking hima question after discussion, he made me feel dumb and I never went to him for help again.
One of the best professors I've had at UA. He is very knowledgeable about the material, but his lectures are a little unorganized. Nonetheless, he keeps his students engage. Be prepared to ask questions if you want to gain some insight in the material. Definite recommendation!
Think summer OChem is impossible? It's doable with Njardarson. Pay attention in class and to his little puns, along with his lightening fast reply rate, and you'll see how much he cares about students. If you nail average on the test, you will get an 80% in the class. More importantly, he's a good teacher and knowledgeable in his subject. And hot.
This class was awesome! He's an amazing teacher and grades you on stuff you actually learn. If you do (and understand) the book problems and also do the reviews then it is an easy A. It's just memorizing the reactions that is difficult if you don't practice them. So yes, I recommend to take this professor! He's awesome :)
Best teacher I've ever had. Show up, listen to him talk, take a test on what he taught you, get a reasonable grade. Couldn't be easier. No homework, he drops one of your test grades, and he never uses PowerPoint so as long as you saw what he wrote on the whiteboard, you're fine. He's also funny and the lectures are cool. Best ochem teacher there is
Okay, bro. This was my second time taking the class because I had Pyun the first time (avoid him at all costs) but I came to Jon's and it was like a breath of fresh air. He cares about you learning so he gives you partial credit for effort. His tests are similar to practice tests and hes adamant about not failing so just study and use the resources
Jon is hilarious. He is fairly clear about what you need to know for the exams. Ochem requires commitment and effort, but Jon's class is fair. Not always super approachable with questions, however.
You can get an A in OChem with Jon; (pronounced Yawn not John). Take him. Come to class. Memorize reactions. Learner the methods form the practice tests. Go to office hours. BOOM! You'll get an A in OChem. Seriously though, he's hilarious and makes OChem interesting and maybe even enjoyable. He curves hard. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK.
His class is doable, although overall I was disappointed. He is not a very good lecturer; often gets ahead of the lecture material and rambles a lot. Lectures are not well organized. At the very beginning he assumes students know the basics and simply omits many explanations. If you are taking him, make sure you brush up on your basic knowledge
One of the best professors I've ever had. Very straightforward in what he expects. If you do the homework (no graded homework, just practice), do the practice exams (practice exams similar to actual), and come to lecture, you will do well in this class. He drops an exam and there's also a huge curve. Also one of the fastest graders ever.
Jon Njardarson taught one of the best chemistry classes I've ever taken. He is knowledgeable, patient with students, hilarious, and overall, a fair and helpful prof. If you go to class, do the homework (just for practice- you don't have to turn it in), and make an effort to know the material, you'll do well. Wish I could take his class again.
Jon is one of the best professors I have had, especially when it comes to a hard class like ochem. He is always available for questions via email and he is very transparent about what is on the test. You can tell he enjoys what he does and his explanations take terms down for everyone to understand.
I practically failed ochem when I took it during the regular semester (I admit I probably didn't do enough work). I took his summer class and even though it was faster paced I got a solid B. He does have an accent (Icelandic?) but his lectures are relatively good and exams are fair which helped me pass . I wish he taught semester 2 ochem.
I'm currently retaking this class since I didn't do that hot last spring and I can honestly say he is BY FAR the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. One thing I truly appreciate about Jon is how he explains concepts step by step and ALWAYS answers questions. His lectures, as well as exams, are clear and precise; you're never thrown for a loop!
Jon is one of the best professors at U of A. Organic chemistry is a challenging subject and Jon actually makes the class enjoyable. His practice exams are almost identical to the actual tests. If you care about your grade and take the time to study hard, you will get an A or B. It also doesn't hurt that he's from Iceland and has a super cool accent
Jon is one of the best professors at U of A. Ochem is a challenging subject and Jon actually makes the class enjoyable. His practice exams are almost identical to the actual tests. If you care about your grade and take the time to study hard, you will get an A or B. It also doesn't hurt that he's from Iceland and has a super cool accent.
Jon is a very knowledgeable Ochem professor. He will go through the material fairly quickly but if you go to class and make an effort his style of teaching will grow on you. Practice tests are exactly like the actual tests. He is a great professor.
One of the best professors I know. Everything I needed to learn was delivered during lecture. Go to class and engage in discussion.
He is a wonderful instructor. There is no mandatory homework for the class which is great. He is really funny too
Fantastic professor. He makes a very hard course interesting and is very passionate. He gives very fair tests, make sure you go to the TA led review sessions and DO THE PRACTICE TESTS. He practically copies the practice tests onto the exams. Also make sure you go to lecture, it's incredibly helpful.
Dr. Njardarson is the best professor I've ever had. I was not that interested chemistry before his class, but I loved his teaching so much that I ended up switching my major to it. His lectures are amazing and I think he's a genius. We are lucky to have him here at U of A.
Absolutely loved this professor. He is hilarious! He throws in these comments during his lectures and engages the class with interesting examples. He's excellent at explaining the lecture materials both in person if you have questions and during class. Tests are a little challenging but if you get a 50% in the class its equivalent to a C.
Jon is an awesome Chem professor. He is super humble considering he has designed 7 treatments for chemotherapy and he is still teaching at the university. You do have to work though, dont expect to just sit and get an A. You dont need the textbook, unless you want to do extra homework. The organic cafe gives lots of practice problems.
Easily THE best professor and human I have ever met. His lectures and expectations are crystal clear. Jon makes very complex topics and chapters very easy to understand. Organic chemistry is very hard but he makes it very enjoyable and truly wants everyone to ace his exams. No surprises on the exam. He is awesome!
Not sure if Jon was having a rough fall semester, but I did not enjoy this course. His lectures were very unorganized, he goes through examples on the board as fast as he can and barely explains what he is trying to teach. He doesn't stop for questions in class and he doesn't like people going to his office hours. I wouldn't recommend him.
I don't know why everyone recommends Jon because this was the hardest class I have taken. In his lectures, he goes off crazy on the board and youre left thinking "what just happened!". He is funny in class but other than that he's alright. He does not encourage you to come to his office hours, and when you do go, he's rude. Save yourselves!
I hated chemistry after gen chem, but Jon really helped to change that. He made the entire course very engaging and interesting, so it was a lot more enjoyable to practice the concepts. But his lectures don't get you to your grade alone, you have got to practice no matter what. The best way to learn these reactions is to use the resources provided.
I love Jon as a person, but this class is incredibly hard. There is no homework and the only thing in the gradebook are the exams. He provides practice exams to study from but they aren't always accurate as to what we'll be tested on. If chemistry isn't your strong suit I would recommend another professor
I really liked Jon and would recommend him to anyone. His grading curve is very generous too. I do not see how you could not get at least a B in this class.
There are 450 points available, if you get 50% of the points you get a C in the class. 4 midterms worth 100pts each, he drops the lowest exam and the final is worth 150pts. To get a B it's based on the average % of the entire class (about 70%-75% is a B). He posts previous exams as study guides. His lectures can be unclear, the textbook helps.
Jon is a wonderful person who really tries to inspire his students to find Organic Chemistry interesting and applicable. He is very reasonable of grading and you only need a 50% in the class to get a C. He gives previous years' exams to practice with and they are almost identical to the exams you will take.
Jon is a decent lecturer, but sometimes he gets wrapped up in his love of chemistry so much that he goes off track. There's no homework, but don't miss class because everything in lecture will be on the exams which make up your entire grade. Grades are based on a class average, so just make sure you're above the curve and you'll at least get a B.
This class is by no means mandatory, but it is important to attend to do well in the class. He is very witty and loves babbling on about random things, but it's kind of funny in a dry humor way. He is very generous in grading. The most important thing to learn in this class is the material covered on exams 3 & 4.
By far the best Chem prof at U of A and wants all of the students to succeed. Grades are based on 4 exams + final; no homework. There was never anything on any of the exams that he did not go over in class and his exam formats are the same every year so there are no surprises. Curves grades based on class averages. 86 was an A for my class.
The lectures are unclear but as long as you do all the practice exams he gives, you will get the epiphany the day before the test. He drops one exam. Always felt asleep in class but I managed to get all A's including the final. Yes, do ALL the practice exams and go to study review! Optional Homework are not as helpful. Curve was an 85
Jon is the most obviously passionate professor I've ever had. He very clearly cares a lot about the subject and enjoys teaching it. The grading can be daunting as the class is only based on 4 tests (one dropped) and one final, but he gives a few practice exams that are exactly like his exams so you should know what to expect very clearly.
This guy is fantastic. Clearly passionate and knowledgable about his material, and his tests are very doable if you've paid attention to his lectures, which are awesome and interesting. He makes it hard to fail his class, as a 50% will end up as a C.
Jón is the best chemistry professor I've ever had. He wants you to trust the concepts that hold true for any new situation, and he explains them very well and with so much passion. If you do each practice test, understand what you did wrong, and take them again, you will be very well prepared for the actual tests.
Jon is a well organized and is very straight forward about what you need to know and what not to waste your time on. Go to class, pay attention, do the practice exams and some of the optional homeworks and you'll get an A.
Jon is a hilarious lecturer and often clear. The course consists of 4 tests (one dropped) and a final. This class is the hardest I've taken so far. Jon gets off track often as he is so enamored in the subject, but by the end of the semester you will feel comfortable with the material so long as you attend class. Easy to get a B, HARD to get an A.
By far one of the best professors at the U of A. Very clear grading policy. Show up to class, take notes, READ THE TEXTBOOK AND DO EXTRA PRACTICE PROBLEMS, take the practice exams and you'll be set on getting an A. Jon is very caring and super intelligent. Loved his class and I truly learned SO much!
Exam 3 and 4 were the most difficult exams given for Ochem 1. The final, said to be "cumulative," consisted of one page on content for exams 1 and 2. Good luck on the final. Won't recommend this instructor. Don't study off the book. These questions are not the same as wha/how he teaches. Also, good luck deciphering his lectures and exam keys.
Jon is probably one of the kindest professors at the U of A. If youre a chemistry major 246A is required, but otherwise his class is a great choice for ochem.
He is the best! I love the way he teaches. He is very kind and considerate. I took 246A with him even though I am not a CHEM major. The homework is optional but highly recommended. 85% was the set A cutoff in all his classes for almost every year. Go to review sessions and ask as many questions but as long as you ask you'll be great!!
One of the best chemistry professors. Partial credit for this semester on exams. Amazing at explaining materials. Make sure to study before exams. Lets you use notes on the exam this semester, not sure about other semesters tho. He is available outside of class, and responds to email fast. Take him if you can. I think he is a pretty good professor.
He is by far my favorite professor. He makes organic chemistry seems easy to learn and understand. He's funny and will always respect you and your questions. He's inspiring. Personally, he made me feel like I could achieve anything. I would recommend him over and over. I'm so glad I got to take this course with such a wonderful professor and person
Dr. Jon Njardarson is an extremely intelligent professor who cares deeply about organic chemistry. His lectures are very insightful, and he truly wants to see his students succeed. His class is not curved but the cut off for an A was an 85%. There is no homework or quizzes, only exams so make sure to read the textbook and do the practice problems!
I do not understand any of these other reviews. Jon is not a good professor and he does not care about his students in any way. I thought I was signing up for the best ochem professor who is easy to understand and teaches the material well. Maybe he had a difficult time adjusting to the online format, but for me, I deeply regret taking his course.
He knows what hes doing, but he cant explain it well. Hes super fast when writing on the board and I cant keep up when Im struggling to draw hexagons. He sometimes gets frustrated when students dont understand. When he shows examples, he doesnt explain why he does certain steps in the reaction. I relied more on the book/tutor than him.
He truly has a passion for the subject and knows it very well however I found that he was not the best at translating this knowledge to his students. What I find most frustrating for this class are the exams. The questions tend to test on a level far beyond what he teaches so while you will learn, be prepared for some damage to your GPA.
I loved the way Jon teaches and felt that he was very good at explaining every concept. You definitely need to start preparing for exams at least a week in advance if you want to do well, especially because your entire grade is based on exams. However, an 85% is an A and one exam does get dropped so Jon definitely wants every student to succeed.
Jon is great. It's Organic Chem, so it's going to be hard. Put in the time and the grade will pay off. Tutoring will be your BFF. Having only exams for a grade is scary but the exams are really straightforward in exactly how the lecture is.
This class is not easy if you don't put in consistent effort, but Jon gives all the necessary resources to succeed. After talking to him about the way he structures the class, it was clear to me that he really cared about our success. His teaching style won't work for everyone but if you put in the effort early on to understand, you'll do well.
Jon was a great professor. He responds to emails fast and is funny in class. He provides practice problems and plenty of practice exams from past years. The grade is determined by 4 100 pt exams (1 gets dropped) and a 150 point final. With what he provides it is very feasible to get an A. I hated chemistry until I took his class.
First of all, your grade is only based on your exams. He drops your lowest exam score (except the final) and the grading scale is very nice (85 is an A). This class makes you work for your grade and you really have to understand rather than memorize. He is a great option for Ochem, and he made me really enjoy the subject.
OCHEM is a hard subject, but Jon made it so much better to learn. However, be warned the subject material is different and your entire grade will be based on tests alone, no filler assignments like HW etc.
Jon is the GOAT y'all. He is a great prof and obviously loves ochem which makes the hard content enjoyable. Final grade is based off 4 midterms and a final which can be tricky but he always drops one score and has a curved grading scale. Super responsive and likes seeing his students pass and do well which is super encouraging if ochem scares you.
He is funny and a literal chem nerd. Ochem is hard but he tries to deliver it in the most capable way. The only things that are graded are the exams. 4 midterms (1 dropped) + final. He does give out the old midterms so that you know what to expect on the exam day. Homework is optional (but highly recommended). Responds emails pretty fast too.
He was a very good professor, i just personally did not understand his form of teaching. However, I read the textbook and got the information I needed from there. If I couldn't find something, the students and I formed a support system to help each other, and he was always eager to answer questions. 4 exams, 1 dropped, 1 final for the grade!
This professor was good at teaching, but the only way I could've passed was with the textbook and with the tutoring sessions. there were only exams, no homework, so you have to stay on top of your knowledge of the current chapter. There were 4 exams and the final. We were given review guides that were very close to the exams (very helpful!).
Seriously a terrible professor, doing the bare minimum. His lectures were unorganized and his exams were ridiculously hard. He doesn't upload any notes or helpful class materials, so if you miss a class you're screwed. This class will take up 150% of your time, so forget taking other hard classes on top of it. Literally terrible.
Jon is amazing. He is extremely intuitive, knowledgable, and a great Ochem professor. He gives you what you need to know to be successful, nothing more and nothing less. There are four, very fair, exams. Prior exams are provided that follow the same mechanics as the actual exams, which is super helpful. Overall, Jon made Ochem a great experience.
Jon is the best chem teacher Ive had. His lectures are clear and he tells you exactly what you should be learning for the exams. Hes a great teacher and makes OChem very doable and enjoyable
its OCHEM so you have to eat sleep breathe the class. simple as that. Jon is the MAN he is so funny and I recommend sit up front and actually caring about trying to learn. The exams are free response and studying from past exams is the best to prepare. 4 examsn plus final w one exam dropped. took the class fall2021.
I like him a lot! He's very chill and calm which is nice coming from a teacher. I feel lost sometimes, but that's just because OCHEM is a hard class. Definitely recommend :)
The professor is really good at doing lectures, but this class is just really hard. Invest in the textbook and chegg for practice problems. You kinda have to teach yourself the material and grades are ONLY based on the exams, but you get drop one exam.
Jon grades solely based on tests: 4 tests (drops the lowest) + the final. He releases a lot of the previous year's tests to help you better prepare for the exams. His lectures are engaging and he explains the topics very well. I would 100% recommend taking him for your first semester ochem!
In this class your grade is 100% based on tests. If you are not good at test taking then take a different professor. He goes over all of the content but its very fast and once you go over it he assumes you know it. The first two tests are much easier than the last two so do not start slacking because you did well on the first two.
If you aren't a good test taker, then you should switch out of this class. It is entirely test-dependent. With that being said, Jon is extremely helpful and wants you to succeed. His lectures are usually fast-paced and he will go over material very quickly. However, Jon provides so many resources to help you succeed. Would take again.
Jon is a genuine guy and wants his students to succeed. That being said, I only really succeeded by doing tutoring and studying outside class. He has gotten noticeably kinder in the difficulty of the exams over the years, and there is a nice built-in curve for the class.
Jon is a very good professor, he obviously has a passion for chemistry and enjoys teaching it. There is a built-in grading curve: A=85%, B=70%, C=50%. There is nothing graded other than 4 exams and a final so be prepared for them. He posts the tests used in previous semesters that can be used as practice exams, and they are a great resource!
Jon was an amazing professor. Even though I am very bad at OChem and did not get an amazing grade, he made the material as digestible as OChem can get. Of course it is still confusing, but it's Ochem, what do you expect? He posts all lectures online, so they are accessible. However, the only grades are exams and final. One exam is dropped though.
Jon was such a great professor. He really does the most for his students, responds fast to emails, and is awesome. Ochem is tough and Jon is the one to take it with. JON IS THE GOAT.
The GOAT
THE GOATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
O chem is super hard with any professor. But if you are not good at test taking, do NOT take Jon. He is super funny in class, but the tests are hard. However, he does release practice exams prior to the exam that are IDENTICAL exactly to the test, just with different molecules. He does not take attendance.
I was very nervous to take this course because of how difficult ochem is, but Jon made it not only easy to learn but also very fun to learn. Only grades are exams but there is more than enough resources to be fully prepared. Most people I know get As on all the exams. So sad he doesn't teach ochem 2 because he is amazing. He also grades exams fast.
I took Jon based off of the Rate my Professor score and it is completely accurate. Jon is an amazing professor who truly cares about his students and is passionate about the subject he is teaching! The class is based off of 5 exams (lowest 1 is dropped) and he provides practice tests for each which are the same concepts but different molecules.
Jon is very passionate about what he does, this is clearly shown through his lectures. Your grade is based 100% on exams and there are 4 exams throughout the semester and 1 final exam. Each exam has no more than 12 questions and a week prior to the exam date Jon provides several past exams for practice that have a identical format to the real one.
Jon is a great professor! He is very passionate and makes ochem easy and interesting. There are four midterm exams and the final, and your lowest midterm grade is dropped. A is an 85% or higher. This class is easy if you put in the time and effort.
Jon's lectures were engaging and test content was made clear. Practice exams are released and give you a very accurate idea of what to expect, make sure you take advantage of those. He may move a bit fast at times, but is willing to slow down if you actually ask him to. It is very easy to see that he is passionate about the topic he is teaching
Jon is definitely the best professor to take for ochem. The content is very difficult and often times Jon assumes his students know everything so he does not explain well. He is not very accessible outside of class apart from email and only hosts office hours on zoom. The grading curve really saves students.
Loves ochem and his passion for chemistry is clear. However, only midterms and finals are graded, very test heavy. If you do not do well on tests, do not take him. He releases previous midterms for you to practice on, which is helpful.
Take Jon for ochem!! His class is not challenging if you use the resources he offers. The preceptors are really knowledgeable and if it wasn't for their office hours I do not think I would have succeeded. Go to them!! Additionally, the practice exams he posts are just like the real exams so use them to your advantage.
The reviews are very accurate: grade based on only 5 exams, amazing lectures (no BS, blunt, and fast), inhumanly fast at grading and emails, and the like. The main thing is the exams: luckily I'm a very good test taker, however a lot aren't and did better switching out to different profs; it's less if he's good and more if you fit him or not.
Only graded by tests, but he posts practice tests for every exam but the final that are nearly identical to what will be tested. I was lost in lectures every single day; he jumped all around and wrote all over the board without laying any foundation for understanding. I spent 20 hours the week of the exam practicing and got a high A on every exam.
Jon is extremely passionate and kind. No homework or quizzes, grade is based solely on exams. Posts practice exams for each midterm, 100% use them. Nothing is a surprise, and he gives partial credit. If you want to prepare for lectures, go to panopto on D2L and watch the old lecture videos from COVID. I did this and got high 90's on every exam.
Jon was extremely nice and made the coursework approachable. That being said, I do not feel that I achieved a mastery in his class of the material. You are only graded on tests in his class, and he provides 5 years worth of old tests to practice. It is easy to get an A on each test because of this, but not great for understanding the material.
Jon is the best Professor ever. He is so kind and funny and makes O Chem exciting to learn. If there was an "Organic Chemistry Book for Dummies" it would be written by Jon. He gives nearly 10 years of practice exams to use as help with problems and models the exams almost exactly like the practice. Going to class is crucial!!
Must go to lecture because its all on a white board
DONT take if visual learner. Be ready to self learn all the lecture material. Jon is kind and a little funny/silly. All of the class is him writing on the whiteboards during lecture so no slides and no lecture material or anything to reference on. Saving grace is practice exams that are near identical to actual. 4 exams, 1 dropped, plus the final.
Jon is amazing. He is really passionate about the class and good at making the concepts easy to understand. The only grades are from 4 exams and a final, but he gives old exams that are identical to the actual ones so it's really not that hard to pass the class, although you still do have to go to lecture as he only uses whiteboards.
I took Jon thinking that he would be the best at teaching orgo 1, but I had a tough time in his course. Jon is incapable of explaining things in a different way to students who need more help. While the practice exams were helpful, the answer keys didn't show how he got to that answer. 4 midterms, one before finals. 1 midterm drops, final does not.
Jon is an okay guy but not that great of a professor. He can't explain things in different ways for people who don't understand it. His only grades are tests, so if you aren't a good test taker that can be difficult. He gives out practice exams identical to the test but does not show his work which also makes it difficult.
I went into Jon's class dreading ochem, but he made it really fun and interesting. It is crucial you come to each lecture as he Only uses the whiteboards. Graded on 4 exams (4 midterms w/ 1 dropped + 1 final). Gives 5-7 years worth of past exams which help a ton. All the people you see complain don't put the work into understanding the material.
his guys teaching method is super old school. He writes EVERYTHING on the whiteboard in class and doesn't post anything to classroom. Only things to use to study are old tests and personally I learned the most on my own and teaching myself and going to SI sessions.
Writes everything on white board, not the best at explaining things, go to SI sessions to actually learn, do your best to get 100% on first test because it gets harder each test, you will have to learn on your own. Copy down everything from whiteboard even if it doesn't make sense. He answers emails super fast. He likes to troll on tests tbh lol.
Absolutely loved Jon. Your grade is based on exams only. 4 Midterms, one final, the lowest midterm grade is dropped. Going to lecture isn't mandatory but you won't understand if you don't attend lecture. Quick to respond, such a great guy.
I think Jon tried to simplify things while explaining but his teaching style didn't work for me. He was very fast and easily filled up all four white boards in the first twenty minutes of lecture. The only grades are the midterms and final, but one gets dropped. GO TO PRECEPTOR HOURS and really make sure you do well on exams (there is a curve).
Really fun guy and always willing to give resources to help you succeed. However expect to teach the content to yourself outside of class using SI sessions or textbooks. Lectures are inefficient, he writes down a bunch on a white board and doesn't articulate wants going on. But he gives all of practice exams that you need to do to succeed.
Jon is a silly guy and a pretty good prof. He knows a ton, but because he knows so much, he will speed through things that you might need more time on. He posts a lot of review before each exam so you know exactly what the questions will be like. There are reviews sessions before each exam, but they were not super helpful. Only four exams
Hilarious and has an infectious passion for chemistry. His practice exams closely match the real ones, making an A easy with effort. Lectures are engaging, though you may leave grasping only half the material sometimes. That's fine—master the exams, and you'll do great.
Jon is a great professor! He is very intelligent, so sometimes he will glaze over small details that may make all the difference and you may leave a little confused. However, he post PLENTY of practice exams which are very similar to the actual exam. If you go to office hours, with he or any preceptors, you will be good.
Professor Jon makes O-Chem engaging, though his class is heavily test-focused. Utilizing the practice exams he provides is crucial. Unstuck ai was a great supplementary tool for my study prep alongside the practice tests. Overall a rewarding experience for diligent students.
He's super smart and responds to emails FAST. But, lectures were hard to follow as he moved rocket fast. Graded by only 5 exams (4+1 final with one drop). Exams were easy because he posts very similar practice exams. Lots of office hours and 2 review sessions for every exam. Attendance is not required, but easy to fall behind if you miss class.
Jon is amazing. dont be fooled by my C im the problem. your grade is only determined by exams, but the exams are very very similar to the many practice exams he provides, if you can do the practice exams, you can easily do the exams. his lectures and really good.
I highly recommend taking jon! The grade is all tests, but the study guides are very similar to the actual tests. He is a very engaging lecturer, and it is clear he is very passionate about what he teaches. Overall I enjoyed his class!
Jon is a very good professor. He teaches the content in the lecture, provides a textbook, and provides recordings of his office hours reviewing the content. We're only graded on exams, and your lowest exam is dropped. Also, his grading scale is very generous (>85% is an A, and so on).
Basically you learn all the content outside of class because following his logic on the white boards is impossible,
His lectures can be confusing to follow sometimes, and your grade is only based on 4 tests. But there are amazing TA review sessions before each test that I recommended going to, and he provides many practice tests and their keys that are exactly like the actual test. If you utilize those before each test, you'll be fine. Overall, I recommend him.
Jon was an awesome professor. He was relatively easy to follow, and he has a good team of TAs, preceptors, and think tank leaders to make up what he lacks. I think attendance of lectures was necessary, though there is no grade associated with attendance. The entire class grade is based off of 4 midterms (1 drop) and 1 final exam.
Amazing prof, insanely good at explaining the content so you understand it and not only memorize. Exams were the only thing graded and past years' exams are provided for practice, containing exactly the same question format, making studying very easy. Do NOT skip class as there are no lecture slides and you won't be able to make it up easily.
Jon is a sweet guy, genuinely enjoys OCHEM and loves to talk about it. Certainly not my favorite teaching style but he tries to make it fun for everybody. He wants you to learn and understand, not just memorize but I do find that since he is so smart in the subject, he can get fast and difficult to follow.
Love this professor, Ochem 1 is a hard class but Jon will teach you to love it. Some points get hard REALLY fast but I recommend going to SI session. Your lowest exam is dropped, and his rubric makes it so that 85+ is an A and 75-84 is a B so honestly hard to fail unless you don't try. ATTEND CLASS. Don't bother reading the textbook either
As far as organic chemistry goes, Jon is the best professor by far. Your grade is only based on 5 exams, but the lowest is dropped and the exams are exactly like the practice exams. If you do the practice exams, you will do very well.
Super smart guy and responds to emails within like 5 minutes. If you go to SI/preceptor office hours they have tricks on how to do things/how to remember things to make the content easier. His practice exams are exactly like the exams you'll be given. Not hard to do well if you put in an ounce of effort.
Ochem is a hard class but Jon overall is a good professor, you can tell he is very smart but sometimes has a hard time explaining things in a simple way. Your grade is only the 5 exams so you have to study a lot.
Great class! Would recommend anyone to take OChem 1 with him
this guy is the goat
Jon's lectures were everywhere, but there is honestly no way to understand organic chemistry unless you do practice yourself. Taking notes and going to class is still important because it helps to look back and understand the mechanisms. The practice exams he uploaded were the key to understanding, I didn't need SI or textbook problems.
