He is a pretty easy teacher, study notes and pay attention in class. He is a really cool, down to earth instructor.
He is a very good teacher. Go to class, take notes, and you'll do fine. Not an easy grader, but very fair.

I LOVE THIS GUY!! LISTEN TO EVERYTHING HE SAYS BECAUSE IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. HE IS SO FUNNY!! IF YOU TAKE HIS CLASS, YOU WILL NOT REGRET A MINUTE OF IT!!
THE BEST! he even described himsdelf as an easy teacher! he is great! noting below a C on anything, just show up to class or he will drop your ass! the best!
Awesome Class!
He's a great teacher. It seemed like he was an easy grader to me, and he's not too concerned with grammar. He's very easy and lets papers slide in late too (even though he says otherwise at the beggining). If nothing else he assigns good books.
Great teacher. great class.
such a fun class!!! one of the best eng 100 teachers on the campus! easy A!!!
Very funny, Don't expecting going home early! He is a workaholic. Expecting lots of reading and writing. He is real helpful if you have questions e-mail to him. He lets you revise your paper and get better grade unlike some others. I give him two thumbs up for EXCELLENTE professor!!!
He is a very hard grader, but easy to talk to. You write tons of papers and read so much! He will help you revise your paper if that's what you want to do to improve your grade. You never get out early, ever! Class is never canceled, even if it's raining hard outside.
Nice guy, I liked him. Lots of work though!
I love Panish!!! He's a great teacher. He expects you to do your best, but a teacher is supposed to do that anyway. He's very helpful and answers e-mails asap. Be prepared to do lots of reading, and the quizzes shouldn't be taken lightly. I think he's pretty handsome for his age too...
You will not regret taking this class!! I hate English, but J-Pan makes it a lot funner. He's a really cool guy and even if you hate English you will love taking this class! You write a lot of papers, but they aren't too hard. Take this class all of you English haters!!!:)
I hate english classes too, but he makes it fun. Really funny guy and good teacher too. I would absolutely recommend taking ANY class he teaches!
Really cool. Talks A LOT. Kinda weird, but the essays were really easy. As long as you go to class and do the work, you'll be fine.
This was one of the hardest english classes I have taken. He's pretty tough on grading essays and his quizzes are tough. The assigned reading is very interesting though. Loooong, boring discussions on the reading. It all boils down to this: If you are a good writer, you pass. If not, you fail.
He good teacher. Me learn to write because of he. He is older then he looks but young at mind. Great teacher.
There is a lot of reading involved, but he provides detailed feedback on the papers we write. A very good teacher.
I enjoyed his class very much. He encourages students to think... to think outside the box(excuse the cliche.) Do all the work and he will work with you so you pass. He sometimes as mood swings, but who cares, he got me through english 101!
Nice guy and a relatively good teacher, but doesn't seem prepared. The in-class discussions can be interesting, but are never structured. This made the class seem boring. Assigns EXCELLENT reading material however. Easy weekly quizzes and relatively easy in-class essays. Overall, an okay teacher and nice guy.Understanding and flexible with grades.
Huh? No extra credit? He even admitted himself that he is very nip picky on grading paper. I didn't get to know him well because I gotta drop out before it was too late! Well, if you just want to take that class for fun, he might be the right teacher. However, transfer students better find an easy teacher.
Pretty easy. Books are interesting. Doesn't respond to emails.
I loved his choice of books to read! I constantly thought of or talked about the readings the entire semester. The books on his list were good for a variety of tastes or interests. He was fun and a little sarcastic. This class helped me decide to be an English major. As with any English class, you have to read/write for a good grade.
This guy is the coolest guy on earth. If you take his class you should be like, wow I am Lucky to be in the sight of The Jon Panish. If you see him tell him, "hey man, your realy cool" That would be nice.
Very cool teacher. Appears to be strict at first, but he is just weaning out the weak individuals. There is a lot of reading in his class but if you keep up and do all the papers you will get a passing grade even if you aren't the best writer. Take him if you can.
this class was great. If the books were not interesting at first they became interesting after class discussion. you do have to write essays to pass, just DO NOT procrastinate!
Omg...he's such a great teacher and he loves to joke around with the students. He has a great personality and a great teaching style, just be prepared to write a lot of essays.
He's a great teacher, very enthusiastic and passionate about literature. Class involves substantial amount of writing and the books are boring sometimes. But overall a good class.
At first he seems scrict and difficult, but then you come to find out he's a really nice, funny guy. There are a lot of essay's but you can redo them for a better grade, and the reading material he assigns is excellent. I would recommend taking his class if you are okay with writing essay's. I love him!!
Jon was so much fun! Lots of class discussion so you MUST read every single depressing novel he assigns or you wont do good. He's kinda cute in that george clooney kinda way too :P
He was a very easy professor to pass. You just have to do the reading and show up on the days that papers are due and for the quizzes. He would go off on tangents, sometimes leaving you with a "why am I even in class" feeling. It definatly was a stress free couple of hours and was very fair in telling you if there would be quizzes on the readings.
great teacher really knows what hes talking about, and uses a lot of reading during the semester, be prepared to finish 2 books within a month! for me that was challenging, but the majority of people can do it. no test or quizzes, just papers at the most 5 pages. different books every semester. essay conference on your paper week before papers due.
Im a big fan of Steve Carell and Mr. Panish kindof reminds me of him. Panish is a cool teacher and he lets us out early almost every day. The week before an essay is due, you only have to show up to a 10 minute conference and thats it! Down to earth guy. I recommend him.
You will do a lot of reading in this class, and have plenty of discussions about it. He is very helpful if you need help on the essays- there are about 4 (including the final). If you want a laid back professor who is fun to talk to and is nice to students- I highly recommend Panish.
Panish was fond of a few certain students and let their opinions sway his grading for the rest of the class's essays. He was biased and if you disagreed with him it was much harder to prove a point than if he agreed with your opinions from the beginning. He book choices were disturbing with a very sexual theme. I don't recommend him.
Jon is a pretty chill teacher. You definently have to read the books thoroughly. Its an interesting class but there is a ton of discussion, which gets kind of monotonous. He'll do whatever he can to help you and he keeps the class fun. All around a really nice guy, easy to understand and if you do your work well you'll get a good grade.
Really nice guy. Four books with four essays. You really have to read the books and understand them, there are quizzes every week on the section you read. TONS of disscussion thats the majority of the class. Interesting class deffinatly take him.
I loved coming to class....maybe because it gave me a chance to monopolize class discussion, but mostly because Panish is a progressive thinker and has a good sense of humour. If you have an interest in social sciences prior to taking this class and have good writing skills, you'll probably end up enjoying it the most. Personally, I loved the class
This teacher was all about discussion. We didn't do class work, maybe about 3 little, little assignments. We read about 4 books, and you have to read them to pass because that's what the essays are based on. He was understanding, and you get to miss class a full week before an essay is due, and you have a 15 min conference in his office.
If I miss anything about Palomar College, it's this teacher.
He is extremely nice. In this class, you read many novels, (just make sure you get the novels for cheap before the semester actually starts) There's only 3 essays, and a quiz about every week but he is an easy grader. And if you ask for help, you will get it.
I will admit i did not do good in this class BUT i am HORRIBLE in english. if you are one, you can get an A from this guy because hes linient, both on attendance and grading and excited the classroom. just makes you read alot though
Professor Panish was really awesome! Dry sense of humor which made class pretty interesting. I suggest taking him for any English class if he is available.
If I ever had to beat a politicians ass, I'd want to do it with this guy. Very clear in what is expected. Will work with you, great readings and even better discussions. Awesome humor and open mindedness. I walked away from this class feeling even more confident in my abilities to write and comprehend literature. Thank you Dr. Panish. :D
Prof. Panish is one of my favorite teachers. He is extremely clear on what he expects of you and he is also very understanding. You HAVE to read the books, if you don't, you wont pass so don't bother taking him if you aren't willing to read. Quiz once a week on reading, an essay on each book, one easy presentation and you are done!
Jon does a good job of explaining everything that is expected. I enjoyed the challenge that the reading and the expectation of critical thinking. Jon is a great instructor, take him and you'll see.
Great teacher if you do not like English classes. He makes what he is asking for very clear and he gives you feedback so that you can improve your essays. You have 4 essays based on the 4 novels you read. He is nice and funny. He goes off on tangents during the entire class though. Easy English class, take it.
Panish is an amazing teacher, very helpful with essay assignments. If you don't like to read do NOT take his class, because you will not be able to bs your way through. I enjoyed his class very much!!
loved this professor was very helpful and actually had faith in his students .
Took this class online. The assignments were reasonable although he prefers students reach the same conclusions as him when interpreting texts. Did not like the content (homosexuality, suicide, death) but he helped with my writing structure and provided thoughtful insight. Discussion boards were lame due to other students not participating.
Panish was a awesome teacher. I took the online class during the fall. His choice of books are odd so if you are sensitive to controversial topics, don't bother. He is a very insightful person and I enjoyed most of the readings. BTW you MUST read! Four essays , test and journal every week!
A lot of writing - weekly journal and discussion (500 Words each), 4 Essays. Must read the 4 text books which can be a bit odd. Takes a while to grade. I do kind of feel like he wants you to share a similar translation of the text as himself. But overall, not too bad of a class. Jon himself is a nice guy that is willing to help you.
Maybe it's just me, but I had a really difficult time giving him the answers he wanted to hear. I have always done well in English and I put a lot of effort in, but I ended up getting a B, which blew my 4.0. So...good professor, but definitely not a walk in the park.
Panish is a really cool guy. Really laid back and keeps his lectures interesting. His 202 English class is a 200 level English though, so make sure you dont fall behind on reading. There will be 5 books, and 5 essays required throughout the semester.
Mr. Panish was a great teacher. It is true, this is not a walk in the park, but it is an interesting class. It meets it's critical thinking subject with the books he picks. Yes there are 5 books. There is no way you can pass this class if you do not read the books. The 5 essays to the book does require research.
Dr. Panish is an excellent professor. You read five books that range from around 200-400 pages. They're all fascinating, informative, and well chosen. Assigned five essays on each book and research is required. There are quizzes each week on the reading material and a lot of class discussion. I highly recommend this professor and class.
Dr.Panish was one of the best english teachers I have had. He is really forward about what he expects from you, and his grading is pretty easy. The books he chose were boring and tedious but he discusses the reading in detail in class. He's a smart guy, well dressed, and easy on the eyes! He likes respect so show up to his conferences too!!!
The best English class I have ever taken. Panish is genuinely interested in you doing well. His reading quizzes are fairly straightforward and you really learn how to express your ideas. Speak up in class and don't procrastinate and you will do well, also ask him questions because he is really friendly.
Took his online class. Thought he was really awesome at first. Book choices were super weird and hard to get into. Then the site he had us use wouldn't let me submit assignments such as essays (which were the whole grade for the class). He let me email him the final drafts but all the small assignments I got F's for because the system was working.
Horrible. Does not clarify his expectations. Don't plan on disagreeing with anything he believes or he will mark it wrong and basically tell you your opinion is wrong. Hard reading quizzes each week, very hard essay grader, very opinionated and has a huge ego. From what I noticed around me, nobody was doing very well. No curve or grade adjustments.
my essays were better than the book he wrote "the color of jazz" and i still ended the class with a B. The sh*ttier my papers were the better I did aka don't try and you will succeed or lets be honest you probably won't succeed with him as your professor
AWFUL professor. Do NOT take him. Impossible to please him and does not help you out one bit. Talking to other classmates, it seems like no one was doing well in his class. Save your GPA & dont take him!!!!!!
Panish is horrible. I typically like and do very well in English courses. However, his grading is brutal and he is very opinionated. Do not take him.
Professor Panish was defitnely not my favorite english teacher. I usually do very well in english, however he made it extremely difficult for me to understand what he was talking about. The quizzes were extremely difficult and the essays are extremely hard to write about. Any other english 203 class is better than this one.
I cannot stress this enough: For the sake of your GPA, do NOT take his class!
Was not expecting an english class to be so tough. Other teachersprofessors would give me excellent grades. However, Prof. Panish was never satisfied. Toughest grader ever. Very opinionated. Will mark wrong if he disagrees. Fellow classmates were all struggling. DO NOT TAKE.
I was dropped from the class on the first day, he claimed I missed an orientation the weekend before school started, he'd "sent an email", when it turned out I hadn't been on the email list, he still refused give me a code to get back in the class which dropped me to less than full time status and screwed my financial aid for the semester.
I am warning everyone about this professor. I have never had such an opinionated, rude, and careless professor. You can bring him a paper that argues ur opinion & he will mark it wrong & comment "not exactly" bc he doesn't agree with u. Had him read my paper early & he said it was great. I later received a low B on it. Doesn't help students at all.
I think if you had a chance to take any other professor do it, because I think you won't have fun in his class. It was very hard to keep up with all of the assignments he was giving out to the class. Not my favorite type of english class
If you have tough skin, then he is good for you. His humor is very harsh and so is the grading. Quizzes are cake but the essays are graded with a magnifying glass. He's a cool guy and easy to talk to other than that. Thought I'd end with an A but the last essay brought me to a B :(
take anyone but him. English used to be one of my favorite subjects but now I hate it. VERY opinionated and tough grader.
This was one of the best English classes I have ever taken. He genuinely wants you to do well in class, and leave with a better understanding of the subject than when you entered. He has meetings with all of his students to go over rough drafts and discuss how you can improve. You have to read and attend class, though.
Professor Panish rewards critical thinking. Reading choices were generally superb, with one essay per book, four books in the semester. Required all essays to pass the course, with three in-person meetings also required (one orientation, two essay overviews). Be punctual and stay on top of the reading, getting behind will snowball the assignments.
Jon could not be a more stereotypical English major. Good for nothing but nagging people to read. I took this class to satisfy my Eng requirement on my IGETC for critical thinking. Needless to say it couldn't have taught me much about critical thinking seeing as the prof himself could not coherently express his thoughts. I am very disappointed.
He is a tough grader, but is fair. He really wants you to good on the papers and gives good feedback when you have mandatory meetings with him on campus. If you don't write your papers, you will not pass the class. He doesn't use a basic text book, but you have to read 4 different books and they are actually really interesting. Would take again.
He's a really great professor and works with students for those that struggle but his class is extremely difficult. I recommend you take someone else. However, if you want a hard challenge and take one of the hardest English classes. Then take him but I'll warn you for those that take him. He'll make you read a lot and it's really difficult.

Assigns controversial & political novels yet chastises & grades you down if your work opposes his viewpoint. I enjoyed all material we read & had a chuckle during comical moments & even shed a tear or 2! However, take your fellow students advice on this site: steer clear of him or write cookie cutter papers that coincide with his opinionated ideals
He is a great teacher overall. The only thing that slightly bothered me is that he is very opinionated and he does not consider your argument in an essay if he doesn't agree. Regardless, he has mandatory meetings for essays which I found very helpful. You don't have to come to class the week that the meetings are held. The quizzes are really easy.
Honestly, he's a great teacher and doesn't have a normal, boring lecture class. He has a very interactive class and I would encourage you to take it.
Class gets very boring after a while. He will talk too long on specific things that often don't seem important. He is willing to talk to you and help you. For papers you should write in his POV instead of yours otherwise he will be very tough when grading. Presentations are graded easy.
He is just great. I took him for both of my English classes and am sad I will not be able to have him as my professor any longer. I like how we read interesting books and write a essay on each. You have options for prompts and he mainly just talks during lectures discussing the books. Please take him if you like English.
I hated the topic of the class but he's a good teacher. Most of the time I felt like I was in some weird book club, until the papers came. There's only 4 papers, it's easy to get a B but nearly impossible to get an A. If you respect him he will respect you (at leats that's what I got) sometimes he lets you out early! talk even if you're stupid :)
There were quizzes every tuesday with with all exams on the books tuesdays as well. A LOT of reading as in finish a whole book in a week or two. There is a mandatory presentation (once) with additional presentations for extra credit o nthe readings. Easy going guy, really nice and understanding. (no makeup quizzes)
If only I read a little more I could of received a better grade. Very cool dude, not sure if I was crazy but I took another class with him just because I enjoyed how he teaches.
Overall, this class was pretty solid. As long as you actually read the book you should do well on the weekly quizzes. Reading in depth also helps you prepare for the essays which require a lot of effort to score well on if you're committed. Take these steps and the class is easy. The weekly discussions are insightful and analytical!
This professor is respectful, he wanted from you to learn! I didnt like that much every theme of books, but couple were really good. Essays are heavy but that is main purpose of this class.
The books he chooses are interesting. Participating in the discussions are helpful. The quizzes are tough, but a small portion of the grade. The papers are the majority of the grade! He is available to help!
I would not share any opinions in this class. He laughs at you and completely disrespects what you have to say. He makes me feel so stupid. I have never gotten below an A in a ENG. He doesnt care what you have to say at all. I have talked with many other students in the class and they all feel the and way. He only cares about his opinions.
4 papers a semester, weekly reading quizzes, and lots of discussion posts. Easy class if you turn everything in on time and stay on top of things.
Professor Panish is a good English teacher, but since this class was Critical thinking, he's very critical... There are 4 books to read, along with a test and essay for each. Most of the books felt like really ling essays, but the info in some of them were eye-opening. The lectures are mostly him talking about the week's reading.
This was the worst online class that I ever took. Had to come in-person for the very first day. Then there were two mandatory in person meetings. The books that were required to read for the course were the worst! There was no assistance or guidance. It was read a horrible book, discussions, quizzes, and paper. He only cares about his thoughts.
