He has a bountiful of info. for your starving mind. You'll be very intrigued by his mind and existance. He's very easy, if you don't grasp it, just ask him. He may come off as if he's putting you down, but he's not the type. I enjoyed the class!
This professor is very boring during lecture. His ideas on Sociology are vague and contradictory. The majority of his students pass his course with a C. His class lectures and exams differ from information provided during letures.
I got an A- in his class without any extra credit, but I had to really study for his midterm and final. His own ideas on sociology are at first a little hard to grasp, but I stook with it and tried my hardest.
hes the easy b-hard a kind of teacher...he does offer extra credit for one full grade higher in the course, but its a lot of work. he ideas are very controversial, but interesting. Don't take this class if you're not open to completely new ideas.
Found him to be a nice guy. he will make you feel comfortable and will provide you with extra credit. His class is good. No Homework. Just try to read as much or cram. which ever. you will pass i'm sure.
He's a great teacher and I learned so much from his class. His ideas are new and revolutionary. If you're looking for an easy class to breeze through, this is not it! He makes you think and in that sense he is a good teacher. You actually learn some unconventional and very philosophical wisdom.
He is a super cool teacher. He is kind of hard, but he's a great teacher. He cares about the students. He truly wants us to learn. He is super funny. I took the second class only because he was teaching it.
I think his theories are bogus and not really capable of being understood. I'll never totally understand what the hell SCP is, and neither will the APA.
His theories are really great and really interesting, but he doesnt leave any room for being wrong or having a theory of your own.
The exams consist of wat we should be learning out of a textbook, but he doesn't focus on exam material in class! It seems that even though he is an extemely qualified instructor, his ideas are out of date. His reader is too vague. It barely touches upon the required material and strays a great deal. Tests barely consist of what the lectures cover
BEWARE: He'll try to teach you his own theories, which are somewhat interesting, but he is so gung-ho on them being airtight that he refuses to believe that they really are not. He will totally shoot you down if you ever try to refute him; he never offers

He was a very difficult instructor. I really had to study for his exams. I couldn't believe most students didn't receive any credit for the extra credit assignment. He was available to help when ever needed, but his theory was so abstract. It was very difficult for me to grasp what he was teaching.
Dr. Snodgrass or "Snoddy" as my peers and I would often refer to him as, is definitely a "diamond in the rough." His teaching style, and especially his new-aged styled belief system and theories are a at first a little difficult to grasp and a bit unorthodox, but will lure your curiosity if you are open to learning them. I recommend the experience!

His ideas are very unconventional so definitely keep a very open mind! He will test you on your understanding of his concepts. If you don't understand just talk to him and he will explain. Personally I think his ideas are great but some people might not feel the same way. I love his ideas and teaching so I took 3 classes in a row with him.
Very difficut to understand his theories. Will grade you harshly if his theories are not understood on assignments. Available for office meetings which you will NEED to attend.

I think Dr. Snodgrass is a great teacher. A lot of his ideas are hard to accept at first but that's why you have to keep your mind open. If you're looking for the standard sociology class, this is not it! He will make you think! And if you don't get his ideas off the bat, at least try. He is always available to help so see him in his office.
DO THE READING AND AND COME TO CLASS. IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE POINTS THAT YOU'LL WILL DO JUST FINE. JUST REMEMBER FIVE WORDS AND YOU WILL DO WELL IN HIS CLASS: IT'S ALL IN THE MIND! THAT'S BASICALLY WHAT HE SAYS ALL QUARTER. HE'S A VERY SMART PROF.

I love him he is the best! He is a real interesting character. At first you might think he is crazy but then you will really understand what he trying to teach. He is so much help, especially if you go into his office, and he sees that you are trying you will for sure pass with an A or B. Take him. 1 midterm 50 q, 10 q quiz 1 final all multi choice
took this class in spring 2006, it was difficult but if you do the reading, take good notes and participate in class discussions you will do good. My final grade was a B+
he is the worst teacher in the history of CSULA. hope he retires soon. very crazy, picky. uncler, strange assignments. fails everyone easily. ignores the students. makes fun of them. not helpful at aaall. worst ever!!
do not take this class under any cir****nstances. half of the class dropped after the 2nd week. he has confusing projects and grades harsh! the whole class was confused about his projects. very rude to others and ignorant. calls the roll 3 times per class. give 5 minute brakes and always keeps late. boring class, easy to fall asleep. SUCKS BIIG TIME

I really enjoyed his class! The people that say that he is hard don't understand his style. He does have a different style, it's a style that will make you THINK! You will definatley learn a great deal in this class if youo take the time too.
extremely difficult to understand the material. You have to keep reading the chapters every week and if you dont understand the material which you wont. Go and see him in his office hours asap. But i would not reccommend him. try and take another socc 322 professor, it will save you the headache
The Best at CSULA
This teacher SUCKKKSSS!! Take word from me. For the midterm, EVERYONE FAILED, one person got a C and he curved the C to an A so everyone is pretty much getting a C. Even if you attend his classes and read the book 5 times, there is absolutely NO WAY to get an actual A in the class. DONT WASTE TIMEEEE!! I wish I never took this teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS (Consider this a warning). He is the worst teacher/person in this world. He curves grades, but whats the point if EVERYONE failed his tests? This guy teaches his "theory"...He beleives that we planned our death, life, and EVERYTHING in it (basically me typing this now was planned)...if you commit suicide you come back to the world until you have fully understood "SCP", then you will die in peace. To put it in NICE words, I THINK HE'S CRAZY...you can figure out the rest...
This teacher is horrible. Those who say he is an interesting or the best teacher must have been paid to say that. He makes up theories, so you cant even research online for more info. You ask him questions and he cant even answer some of them. One midterm/one final and a bunch of quizzes. He does not review for the midterm or final. DONT TAKE!!

This teacher seriously snaggled my yellow. He lurched my blunderpuss. I did not know what to expect while entering this class, being an elective, and he just kept teaching us HIS opinion. I took his Soc 322 class and I can only say... NEVER AGAIN. He works rather hard to push his crackpot theories and would literally take offense if they were actually proven wrong. It was really hard to understand anything he was talking about... c'mon, Star Wars? His teachings have no way of holding up in the real world. DO NOT TAKE. RUN.

If you are interested in just learning definitions and how to give them back in an exam, this is not the professor to take. If you are interested in depth psychology and want a real education of concepts in Psychology, this is your professor.
Snodgrass is a nice person, but he needs to retire. Confusing and contradictory. His theories are unconventional (in a bad way). Does not like his theories to be questioned, especially since he can't answer good questions. couple of quizzes. Challenging midterm and final, his review's not very helpful. Avoid him if you want to learn SOCIOLOGY.
HE IS A HARD TEACHER. HIS IDEAS ARE ABSTRACT AND DIFFICULT. HE IS A HARD GRADER. AND HIS TESTS ARE DIFFICULT. TRY AVOIDING HIS CLASS. BECAUSE PROBABLY THE GRADE YOU WILL TAKE FROM THIS CLASS WILL RUIN YOUR GPA.
His theories are different and interesting. You will learn to look at yourself before judging or criticizing others. If you didn't like his class it is because you cannot accept your faults! I mean it in a most positive way! He is a great teacher!!!
I took him in the Spring believing I was taking a class on Human development from the psychology department, and instead, I got a class from Sociology on Self Concept Development, which is derived from psychoanalysis. I received an "A" in my Psy 412A,which is known as the standard perpective, but a C+ here. He uses the same book in all his courses.
Do Not take this class read and everything, went to class and studied my butt off and still did not pass. also know several others with the same situation
HE is such a great professor, he does teach from a self concept perspective which is a totally different from standard perspective. You must have an open mind while taking this class, the book is easy read, attandance and note taking is crucial to passing the course. I didnt do much reading just notes and passed with an A.
SO WE HAVE A PROFESSOR HERE THAT DID NOT GET APPROVAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT TO TEACH HIS SELF CONCEPT PERSPECTIVE (SCP), SO HE SIMPLY TOOK ANY COURSE HE WAS APPROVED FOR LIKE THE ONE I TOOK, AND TOUGHT SCP ANYWAY. HE SPAT ON THE DEPARTMENT, AND ALL HIS STUDENTS ARE PAYING THE PRICE. WHAT A TRAJEDY! NOW THESE CLASSES HAVE TO BE REPEATED.
Extremely horrible professor. He teaches his own theories but they change lecture after lecture. Oh and his lecture are very disorganized to the point where even he gets gets confused. A large majority of the time he tries to redeem himself saying that he's not a bad teacher. I studied hard and I got a C+. Never take him.
Really has some strange ideas but very interesting. Never thought about the world the way he explains it. Not a mainstream view either. Has his own text so fairly cheap and goes right along with his tests.
he wants the class to teach themselves, basically. when no one asks questions he assumes no one read but in truth, we were all looking for an explanation to the confusion we read in his book the night before. he never fully explains concepts. at times he seemed confused himself... i do not reccomend him
I do not like him or his class. he is very confusing. I didnt pass my midterm because apparently I used he/she and him/her as examples in the writen test. he took off points because apparently what he teaches doesnt have a specific gender. he is not worth it save your selves and your GPA =(.
He requires the new edition of the book he has written each quarter. New editions come out quarterly, so there are no used books. That might give you some insight of the person he is. BEWARE he does not care about you or your education. He does not teach or test from the book. The lectures are off and he tends to go off on what is on his mind. BAD+
The textbook is so hard to understand. Yes! He wrote it. It was a struggle reading it but you have to so you can pass the class. He always looks exhausted when he teach which makes me feel exhausted watching him. Very interesting but very confusing as well.

Was very interesting class but when it came to exams it was a total diff story. He makes it more confussing.
Completely outdated perspectives. He did not even entertain thoughts of current world views. Had nothing to do with sociology. He focused almost entirely on Freudian theory. He could not directly answer questions. He spent 40% of class time reprimanding students for doing poorly on his exams.
He is a nightmare.No idea what the book is talking about, feel like he just repeating and repeating over and over again. His theories are confusing as well. Overall a teacher does not know how to teach. DO NOT take him !
Prof.is a bit hard.You must participate and go to class prepared.Exams are long and hard.If you want to pass I suggest you participate a lot and you will be fine.Read his material over and over to understand it better!Good Luck!
He should be teaching philosophy, not sociology. Pretty much everything he teaches is based on anecdotal evidence. Whenever someone points that out to him, he just says, "try it out yourself." Sociology may not the most scientific subject but this professor is completely unscientific and seems contemptuous of the scientific method.
Let me warn you. I brushed aside all previous comments and took this class. If you are looking to satisfy UD Theme, take another class. Your grade (20%) depends on the class participation. You are at his mercy. The book is OK (easy to understand) but lectures confuses you. This definitely is GPA buster.
i admire & respect his very under rated and complex theory of SCP-- he will challenge your thinking. i appreciated his newer complex ideas and i learned more about myself than any other class-ask for help plus read & study his book-not for the impatient or weak minded-you won't get frustrated if you allow and stay open to new theories best of luck!
This is not an easy class but you will learn a lot, especially the newer perspective (Self-Concept Perspective). I understand how a lot of students complain about this class, but if you can be patient and willing to learn new concept about life, you will do fine. Good luck!
You learn nothing of substance in his class. Most of these sort of professors use universities as their last resort as a profession. They need to be in the crazy house instead. Too bad our teaching standards at csula are so low.
In all sincerity, I would definately not recommend any serious scholar to take any of his courses. The material is easy BUT he designs it unclear and ambiguous. Also, his "theories"(e.i the Oedipus complex) are misoginistic.
I wish I read the comments before taking his class. He is very confusing and seems lost most of the time. He doesn't know how to explain the concepts, they are all very abstract. I understood the Self-Concept Perspective towards the very end. He is not an efficient teacher because the whole class was complaining that we don't get his lectures.
I have not learned one thing that corresponds to aging and maturing. Unnecessarily abstract to the point where there is no practical use in reality, only in the "unconscious mind". God help you if you have no other option and good luck.
This professor should be fired. Worse professor I've had in my entire life. I dropped his class he was so horrible.
Avoid this man at all costs. He is not a good professor and you will struggle needlessly while learning little. If you're stuck there like I was just know to never "explain in your own words." Would not recommend anyone to take his class. He thinks we should know everything the first time and that he is the most important person. NEVER explain in your own words, you will be totally wrong and it will show you didn't read. aSnodgrass as my teacher messed up my GPA.
Jon Snodgrass is an EXCELLENT teacher, all the answers are IN THE BOOK, so if some of his students actually took the time to crack it open, they wouldn't complain so much. We live in such a sad, over-privilaged society. Professor Snodgrass is amazingly intelligent and helpful, even if you don't agree with what he teaches, you're there to LEARN!

Avoid the professor at all cost. He teaches sociology from a psychological perspective, which is absolutely confusing. He expects you to know everything and gets frustrated when students don't contribute during class. Very confusing. Lectures are boring but you have to attend otherwise your grade goes down

Professor was incredibly confusing and for his class I actually read his book. I highlighted, made notecards but even his book was confusing and felt contradicting at times. He would get mad if we did not understand the concepts and when he scribbled circles about the "Ego," it made things worse. I wish I read the comments before taking his class.

Although he is very hard, he is a very educated man! I struggled in this class, but learned A LOT on how to view things in a different perspective. This class is challenging BUT you can learn so much from him IF you enable yourself to. Go to his office hours read the book ask for help and you'll do fine!
Professor contradicts himself all the time. Very bias lectures and book. He doesn't let you speak your mind and everything he says is correct. Treats his students like if we are all ignorant and bad mouths other professors. He should teach philosophy not sociology. He is so confusing and reminds me of the cat from Alice in Wonderland.
Though he is an educated individual, he's not a very good teacher. He contradicts the book he uses (ironically, he wrote the book himself), and he's always right and you're always wrong. I wouldn't recommend, but if you're stuck with him, I suggest you find him in his office since he DOES provide some help.

Horrible professor! I took his class years ago. He's very rude and is a Mr. Know It All. He does not like students to challenge and prove him wrong. I'm shocked he still teaches there. My class consisted of 20 students at the beginning and only 5 of us completed his confusong "Star Wars" class. Do not take him!!!
Professor Snodgrass was very difficult since he had his own book and philosophies. However, although this class was hard it was interesting and even until this day i am able to reciprocate what i learned in that class. You need to remember what school is about, its not just the easy A. Rest in peace professor
