This guy is hilarious. He is the only professor I've seen that can make a whole theater full of students laugh. He makes his tests easy, he gives hints to answers on pop quizzes, and the material is interesting. I learned a lot of cool trivia in this class. TAKE THIS CLASS. Jon Solomon is awesome.
This has been my favorite class so far. It's the one class the entire year that I actually look forward going to. His lectures are actually very interesting and he is very humorous, and not in a cheesy way like a lot of the professors at the U of I. I definitely recomment taking this or any other of his courses.

Awesome professor. Hilarious, tons of pop culture references in every lecture. Long reading assignments, but I rarely bothered to do them. Wish he taught engineering.
Although you need to read a lot of materials for this class, they are not that difficult if you are interested in learning Greek Mythology. Also the assignments are not that hard and it's easy to get all of them right. Prof.Solomon is very nice. But one of his TAs is a bit too critical.
Awesome
This guy has been the coolest techer i've had all year, he is hilarious he spoon feeds answers to 'pop' quizes. Even though there are alot of LONG reading assignments, if you're interested in it, it's not so bad.
pretty rude and he doenst even answer his students emails. Also, the exams require a ton of memorization of little facts that have nothing to do with the lectures he gives. The Ta's are way too critical when they grade the essays
The subject matter he covers is often pretty boring, but he makes it interesting. He is always making jokes ("Terence is like South Park"), and if you come to lectures, he gives you the answers to pop quizzes. A lot of reading is required, but you don't have to read everything to get a good grade in the class. A lot of writing is required too.
Do not listen to what anyone on this board says. this teacher is incredibly easy, as well as nice. and hsi TA grades like were in junior highschool. TAKE a class with solomon!
SO EASY!the only time you actually have to work for the class is the 3 essays. But its still easy becos he gives you lots of hints and its googleable. The midterms are SO easy if you did study, its so BASIC.
This professor's grading is extremely easy and fair. His tests are just worksheets (front and back), one page. He is very lighthearted in lecture. However, I agree with what others have said about his awkward office-visit demeanor. He is extremely cold and mean in person.
good class, quizzes are easy and the material is interesting enough. the homework isn't too bad, and tests are fine. i don't know if it's because of prior knowledge or the class, but i seemed to know the material pretty well during and after i took the class. recommend!
Solomon is easy, interesting, and has one of the most entertaining lectures on campus.
Exasperatingly easy.
this class would be so easy if our TA wasn't so hard on our papers.
Best class I've taken at UofI. Lectures are interesting and pretty funny. As long as you study exactly what he tells you you'll be more than prepared for exams.
He is the best teacher in this school. He is really committed to his subject area. He uses different kinds of technology to teach the class and it is all around interesting. I took an extra class of his just because he is an awesome teacher!
Reaallyy..not so good. I signed up for the class because I saw good reviews here, but I don't quite agree with them.
Jon Solomon is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. His interest in the subject matter is both a pleasant surprise and contagious, as he makes great jokes ("My name ith Arithtotle, I'm a philothopher!"), and has quality slide-shows which include video and clear images of the most famous historical art. Take his class and love it.
EASY and INTERESTING class! Great teacher! He is so understanding and lenient. He is one of the only teachers who realize that gen eds are not top priorities. Tests are all multiple choice, and he gives you a study guide. You get to rewrite all three papers if you get a bad grade. As long as you fill out the homework you will get a 100%!
Excellent professor! Keeps the class interesting with the use of media and passion. I highly recommend this course for anyone trying to complete their non-western requirement. It is also a double dipper! I was intimidated by the syllabus at first but after taking the class, one should not be. The papers are very fair and he allows a re-write.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I loved this class. So easy if you pay attention during lecture. He explains everything and goes over all readings, so you don't even have to read them (even though the readings are all extremely interesting). Homework, papers, and tests are ridiculously easy. Most intelligent teacher I've ever had. TAKE THIS CLASS!
A really awesome professor. All the homeworks and tests are easy if you put in just a little time. Some people say he's not cool in office hours, but I've been several times and he's nothing but nice and easy to talk to. His lectures are interesting and amusing.
Decent professor and easy but boring class. The lectures are pointless and boring but he gives out simple attendance assignments sometimes. There are some books to read for the class but you don't need to read them. There are three, one page essays that are really easy and the tests are all memorized multiple choice. Overall easy gen ed.
Jon Solomon, ... I wish all my professors were like Jon Solomon.
If you don't like mythology, you're not going to be too interested in his class. It is, however, very easy and because I love mythology, very very interesting. This man actually knows everything by heart and loves his subject. He's really funny in class and likes to make fun of himself. He makes lots of pop culture references. Lauren's the best TA!
Amazing teacher, amazing class. Very manageable workload, we read 2 books, he highlighted each chapter in class so you knew the important things, wrote 3 1-page papers, a bunch of workbook stuff, and 2 tests, no final. He makes intro to greek cultures actually interesting and easy! If you need a gen ed make sure you take this class with him!
I enjoyed my study abroad experience with Prof. Soloman. He made Rome a very fun and intersecting place, always eager to answer questions and always provided good info. Brilliant man !
The funniest professor I have ever had and definitely knows what he is talking about. Wants everyone to do well and connects movies with mythology which was pretty cool. Also had him for a discussion and he was really cool. Take classes with him!
The Best class I've ever taken so far! Solomon makes his class very entertaining through showing movie clips and even throwing in some personal stories and pictures. The class wasn't hard but homework had to be done to get a good grade. For exams, just memorize the required pages and stories and you'll get an A.
Easy class. Exams are super easy. Goes over all the material in lecture so reading isn't necessary but you need the book for the random quizzes in class.
The work load of this course is a lot more than I anticipated. If you are looking for a fairly simple gen ed look elsewhere. Yes, the class is interesting and exams are straight forward, but time would be better spent studying for other classes.
Exams were really easy as long as the relevant stories were read(or summaries were read). Pretty funny guy with interesting material. I'd take it again.
you are required to buy a course book which has study guides for each exam. just study whats on the study guide then you will be set. exams are very easy but essay exams are annoying especially your ta is anal about thesis and 5 paragraphs. some readings are long
Jon is amazing. The most fun, interesting, captivating and knowledgeable professor i've ever had. Lecture notes aren't online so you have to go to class but it's worth it- he makes the class a blast. Not hard material either, very intriguing. take this class! i love jon!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this professor speak about so many things from philosophy, to influences of Greco-Roman culture in modern times. I agree with a previous comment that he is one of the most knowledgeable professors on campus that can keep you listening
GREAT professor. Powerpoints are really interesting and he is very smart and knowledgeable. The class is really easy too because he teaches the information so well. Exams are not hard, just use the study guides that are provided in the required text and you will ace them. Highly recommended professor, take ANY class he teaches.
I thought he was hilarious. Often makes jokes, tells stories, and swears during lecture. He makes the class fun where it could be quite boring. I enjoyed lecture quite a bit, plus the multiple choice exams are SO EASY if you go to class. He knows what he is doing and he knows how to entertain a lecture hall of 300+. I highly recommend him.
Solomon cracked me up! Easy class, interesting lecture (and I'm an engineer), and good communication. Just get a good TA and your set. The exams are a joke.
He is awesome.
He is awesome! Very funny! He makes his lectures interesting, and as long as you do the assignments you'll be fine!
The best professor ever
Solomon is the man. He keeps lectures entertaining and is very helpful. Super easy class. Only two tests all semester and 3 papers. You can rewrite all the papers. TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM
His class was easy and entertaining, being humorous and making tests that, while you do have to study at least 2 hours for, are more than fair and in-class tests that are extremely easy since he literally tells you the answer after he tells you the question. I recommend him for any class he teaches because he's a really awesome guy.
Solomon was a wonderful professor. His class was not only easy, it was interesting and intriguing. There was not a cumulative final, only a "last test." He's very into what he's teaching and he passes on his passion to his students.
All your preconceived notions about this class and professor are probably accurate. Taking it with Solomon is not only fun but also very easy to do well. No "textbook" but a lot of supplemental material and course workbooks.
BEST teacher! You buy the workbook for his class and there is a decent amount of reading but nothing strenuous. He is very funny. He's excellent in using things from current movies and such to tie to points he is trying to make. Although attendance is not mandatory, I enjoyed going to his class. He's very knowledgable and humorous!
This class is fairly easy however WAY too much work for a gen ed. There's a ton of reading that he expects you to do and his lectures are completely pointless, all he does is read the textbook to you and shows you some video clips. There's A TON of writing in this class as well. Overall bad class
Class not mandatory at all, but he is very entertaining. Basically tells you everything you need to know for the exams, and put forth some effort for the writings. Even though there are a lot of readings, I never really read them and I did fine!
Solomon is super chill and hilarious. His TA is too if you just talk to him. I found that I didn't need to read any assignments in order to pass the class, but what he aims for is that you become an educated individual, so you can sound intelligent. I found his lessons useful in other aspects of my life, but again it's not mandatory lectures.
Great professor, very interested in topic which makes the class very interesting. I really enjoyed the class and the workload was very easy to handle. I would highly recommend over CLCV 111/115 just because of the smaller size and there is no discussion section.
One of my favorite professors at UIUC!! He is completely entertaining and loves to share his life stories, very passionate about subject! I would recommend this class to anyone who has the slightest interest in the subject! You will learn a lot. Tests are all multiple choice and he gives you a study guide that the questions come straight off of
Great lecturer and you can tell he is passionate about the subjects which make it an interesting class. Solomon is a real smart guy, that is evident. The exams are as easy as memorizing a list of terms. If you do the work an A is impossible not to get. My only complaint is that he is so busy he can't dedicate a ton of time to students emails.
Solomon was one of the best professors I had this semester. He was really engaging and made the course fun. He's really knowledgeable on the subject. If you need a gen ed class, this is definitely a class worth taking!
Incredible professor, makes class so much fun. Cracks jokes and has a good time teaching. Highly recommend taking his class!
This class so easy. 4 papers, 3 of which are 1 page and the 4th one is 3-5 pgs double spaced. a good amount of websearches and prequizzes which are easy and I could do in class during lecture. The tests are pure memorization of the exact information so lecture is kind of unnecessary. And for every paper, he basically told us what to write. EASY.
Solomon was such an interesting guy! He made the class a blast. The material was all in one convenient book made by him, saving you money instead of having to buy a million books. The papers and assignments were easily done and quickly done. Some reading, but it was interesting. TAs were typically eccentric and fun as well. Great, fun professor.
Jon Solomon is one of the best professors I've had so far. He is extremely knowledgeable about his topics and wants to spread his knowledge to you.
Not to confuse with CLCV 115111. 116 is the Roman Achievement! SO SO easy! 4 one page papers, 3 of which you can rewrite. I went in for help on the fourth but the TA just gave me a 4545 instead. Two 80 point multiple choice tests that are solely memorization like literally memorize all dates, authors, books etc. Random web searches etc but easy
Solomons is a great professor, but I did not enjoy his class at all. There is a lot of busy work, and a lot of reading and memorization. Lots of little assignments you have to do. Workbook and discussion book are expensive and mandatory, and assignments require you to tear out pages, making them worthless at the end of the semester.
amazing teacher!!!
Just a really funny guy. It's like having a comedian as a professor.
Very interesting class. Solomon is really interesting lecturer and he loves telling stories about his expeditions that relate to the material taught in lectures. Exams require a bit of memorization but you can spend a couple of hours before the exam memorizing and easily pull off an A.
I lost a lot of points because I never showed up to lecture, but I did show up for discussion all the time. Lots of little assignments here and there, and there's no actual final but there are 3 MC midterms and 3 in discussion essays. I did alright in that class, but it's definitely not an easy gen. ed like you would have wanted.
Solomon is great. He is a good lecturer and has a lot of funny stories. The class is easy, just memorize the study guides and practice tests and you can easily get an A on the tests. Loved the class!
Love Solomon! Super funny. Highly recommend greek and roman mythology; if you study for the tests its an easy A because he tells you exactly what will be on the tests!
Everyone will tell you this is a super easy class, and it is. If you keep up on the little assignments and studying. It got a little too close for me by the end of the semester because I missed some homework. As long as you don't forget you're taking this class, cram for the tests, listen to his awesome stories in lecture, then you'll get an A.
I would take any other class taught by Jon, he was awesome. CLCV 115 was so easy, as long as you do the assignments (3 a week, each take about 20min) and show up to half the classes you will pass no problem. There are no tests for this class and most of the time Jon just talks about random Roman/Greek history but he's fun to listen to.
The grade is pretty much entirely exam based. If you mess up one exam, you're kind of out of luck to raise your grade.
Great and interesting class from an awesome professor. Tests are very easy (matching, true/false, vocab) and homework is very short. Highly recommended.
Overall, easy class, just google flashcards for it and study it to ace the exams. 3 non-cumulative exams & no final. Really passionate and somewhat eccentric professor. Discussion is mandatory and there's weekly assignments that feel like busy work. The workbook is basically a study guide.
Jon is a great lecturer, but I never took notes in the class. For exams, just make flashcards on all of the terms in the workbook and memorize. Most of the homework assignments are online, but I lost a good amount of points during the discussion quizzes because I didn't do the reading. If you do the work, you'll get an A.
Great lecturer. There's a lot of reading (like too much) for a gen ed, but it's pretty interesting. You don't have to read it all anyway--he tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams. Great class.
This class was a cake walk. Please take it if you get the chance, all of the tests are on quizlet and super easy to study for. I never paid attention in lecture and got an A. definitely worth the $100 for the textbooks. If you can, ask a friend who took the class before to give you their homework.
It's very obvious that he's been doing this for a while. His lectures are so cool and in-depth; I've been learning mythology since grade school, and he taught me so much in this class that I'd never even heard about. Go to the lectures. He doesn't post them online, and they're interesting besides that.
He is a great guy. By the time I'm writing this review, I haven't finished the class yet but the way he is made me do this review. Easy class, do the quizzes and you'll be fine. He's not a tough grader. He accepts late work only if you present your excuses! I'll chose him as my instructor for any class any day!
A nice course overall, no final exam, sample test questions can be found online. The lecture is not really helpful, just make you sleepy, but you don't want to skip the class because he takes attendance. An A is desirable if you work hard before midterm.
I took this class thinking it would be interesting and it was but Soloman gives A LOT of busy work. You buy a workbook where you have homework assignments you have to type out and print to turn in. It was definitely not as easy as a gen ed as I hoped it would be. The tests are all memorization but you can easily look up quizletts for them.
Solomon gives amazing and hilarious lectures. There are pop quizzes that account for attendance, but sometimes he literally tells you the answers. This class is definitely not an easy A because you have to put minimal amount of work in, but once you do it's like a piece of cake. Exams are based on memorization; Quizlet is your best friend.
Solomon was a great professor. He was super engaging and entertaining. He laid out course expectations clearly in the required workbook and made it easy to succeed. I would highly recommend taking a class taught by him if you have the chance!
Please save yourself the trouble and don't take this class if you don't work well in lecture halls of 500+ students, I def made that mistake. 115 gives more chances to raise your grade bc of the discussion class and I so wish I could've taken it. Tests are ALL memorization; don't expect Solomon to email you back or help you out with your grade.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Just go to his website and see how many articles and books hes published (maybe over 100). The class is very simple, barely any work. Just do your stuff regularly and walk out with an A.
I took Solomon for CLCV115 and he was a fantastic professor in class, and it was relatively easy to get an A in the class as long as you prepared for the midterms with the study guides in the workbooks and did your homework. I am currently in CLCV224, and the work load is much heavier. In a matter of 10 days, Ive had 5 (easy-ish) assignments due.
He is an amazing guy. It's really the first time in my life that I enjoy reading classics and taking a humanity course. Although the workload may be heavy, it's not that difficult to get a good grade on your homework.
This class is great, I took it to clear my mind of STEM and it did just that. It is a lot of work, far more than most geneds, so only take this class if you really love the material. Sometimes the lectures were just silent slideshows, which wasn't great. Overall though, if you like mythology, you will love this class, incredibly fun and interesting
I took this class in Fall 2020 online, and it was super fun. I highly recommend this class. If you are a big Percy Jackson fan, this class will be a breeze. My TA was understanding and offered extensions often, without asking. The reading is a bit boring, but the tests are regurgitating lecture info. Easy A, especially if you enjoy the content
Absolute professor. He actually realizes that most people take this as an elective and that people take it because it sounds interesting, and it is. He makes it fun and interesting and is forgiving about unfortunate circumstances. Possibly best professor at UIUC.
Professor Solomon wasn't too interesting of a professor, but the class was very straightforward and easy. Kinda annoying that he makes you buy a couple of expensive workbooks that he writes himself, but at least the homework and tests are all online and easy. The lectures are pretty knowledge packed, but honestly you don't need to listen to them.
CLCV 224 is a great class. It is not challenging, and it is inspiring to learn from Prof. Solomon. You do not need to read everything assigned to do well in the class. Prof. Solomon is really passionate about teaching and the reading materials he provided in class are helpful. The only thing bad is the expensive textbook.
I am very satisfied with my experience in this class, and am genuinely convinced this professor could make anything interesting. This class with him is an easy A.
He is really passionate about Greek mythology and shows it in his lectures. His exams are super straightforward so just watch the lectures and youll be fine. The only thing is that he talks really slow, so you might have to speed up his videos. The TAs are all super amazing and nice. This class was really fun and an easy A.
Really wish this class could've been in person, I probably would have paid more attention. He makes learning the info fun and interesting but watching 40-50 min long lectures was quite boring. Super easy class though and the TA I had (Genevieve) was super chill. Overall, I enjoyed the class and would def take another by him in person!
He's GOATed. Highly recommend. The class is easy and interesting.
I love him.
I took this class as an elective and wasn't a big fan of mythology. The professor was very enthusiastic with teaching, which made the class better. Pop quizzes and exams were easy, memorize what he tells you and you'll do great. There is some work you need to put in but it's manageable. Would recommend this course for freshmen.
Prof Solomon himself is an amazing lecturer and professor. He cares a lot about the subject he teaches and cares about his students and makes sure they are doing well and everyone gets a good grade. The only drawback of the course was the amount of busywork we had. Other than that, this class was a 10/10
Professor Solomon is amazing! He is super engaging and always tries to make class fun. The material is dense but it shouldn't be too bad if you're interested in it. There's a lot of reading and memorization.
Professor Solomon is a great teacher, tries to keep things fun and interesting, and definitely knows what he's talking about. I definitely recommend taking his classes because they are so interesting and not too hard.
This man should not be allowed to teach about race, racism, racialized violence nor sexism and sexualized violence. He uses antiquated terminology and non-inclusive language to teach lectures that weakly compare contemporary American racism with the ancient world. All this and a $70 textbook (that he authored) you cannot complete the class without.
Love this professor! huge fan. great class.
Super respectable professor, you could tell he is passionate about mythology and loves teaching it! Pop quizzes will count for your grade, but otherwise, the material is pretty straightforward if you're following alone with lectures and the workbook.
While lectures aren't set up to enhance engagement, they are quite interesting if you can pay attention. Extremely easy class.
I cannot sing this professor's praises enough. He is a passionate, exciting professor who cares about the quality of his students' education. The assignments are beyond fair and the grading structure is kinder than any other I've seen. I've taken both classes he teaches at UIUC and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Easily my favorite professor
Professor Solomon is an incredibly hilarious and fun person. He always taught with enthusiasm and had very clear expectations for grading. The class is also very memorization based.
he counted by six as "6, 12, 24..."
I took CLCV 115 & CLCV 224 with Professor Solomon. Amazing Professor who incorporates modern pop culture references into lectures to keep them engaging and interesting. Super knowledgable person, who is fun, engaging, and hilarious. Classes are fair, interesting, and overall, great experiences. Most memorable Professor that I have had at UIUC.
Prof. Solomon's lectures are really engaging and provide students with the easiest and most straightforward way to get an A in the class. You just have to show up to lectures and take the pop quizzes, which he gives you the answer mostly, and read and write small amounts during the TA sessions. He is the best and this class is the best.
Amazing professor!! I loved his CLCV 115 class. If you are someone who has even a slight interest in this course and needs it for the credit please take it!! Just beware of the readings if you are someone who doesn't like that kind of assignments.
Professor Solomon makes lectures enjoyable. Assignments and tests are easy to do well on if you put in the effort. Would recommend for the gen ed requirement.
Professor Solomon makes this class an engaging and straightforward experience. With his enthusiasm, clear expectations, and helpful TAs, it's an easy A. Unstuckstudy was a great supplementary tool for exam prep.
awesome teacher, easy class for a gen ed credit, 10/10 def recommend
Besides having to purchase a textbook, this class was a great gen ed. Super easy and pretty engaging lectures for such a big lecture hall. Lots of movies, music, etc. played during lecture to keep it engaging. Pre-lecture readings are short and the most work you'll have to do for this class is essay prep. Objective exams are SUPER easy-no tricks.
Very engaging and funny professor with interesting lectures that I looked forward to going to every week. Very easy class as long as you show up to lecture and take decent notes. Everything you need for tests is in his workbook and the questions are super straightforward.
He is a very fun and interesting lecturer, often times throwing in movie clips that relate to the subject at hand. The tests are fairly easy multiple choice and mostly simple memorization questions. He gives you a long list of words to memorize and if you know those, you are set for the test. You will have ~2 open ended questions to answer a week.
I enjoyed Dr. Solomon's lectures greatly when I did go. He made the class and subject much more entertaining and interesting to someone who wasn't all that interested in the subject. The discussion book is very clear on what is tested on exams which is mostly matching/mcq with key terms. I managed to learn all the material the day before each exam.
I mean this guy is the best. Theres nothing else to it.
