Great guy. Very approachable. I loved his class. (He was a TA for Forms of Fantasy, if you have this class, and he is a TA there, GET HIM!!!)
Best TA hands down!!! Jon goes out of his way to help his students understand, prepare and discuss the material. He genuinely gives a damn about each of his students, there was not a student in our tutorial that did not appreciate his hard work not to men

Jon is a great tutorial leader and he is really proud of his own work.
Very easy marker. Me likey.
He honestly cares about his students and he wants everyone to do their best. He has no problem marking a full rough copy and helping you out. Greatest TA!

Jon is a great T.A. He's really helpful and goes beyond my expectations for a T.A. He motivates his students, is very approachable, knows his stuff, is funny, and overall, a really nice T.A.
marks too hard.
He genuinely wants to help his students but tends to say things to ****you off and make you feel uncomfortable. Walking into that classroom of his is something i dont always look forward to. But again, he IS a good TA.

this guy is a arrogant. he gets off on himself thus pushes his own ideas ahead of those concepts intended by the professors. should not be educating students , especially 1st years. John is a bad teacher
I took this course over a year ago and it was one I will always remember. He added a lot of additional work to the course but it actually came in REALLY handy for the exam. He was motivating, inspiring and hard working. I hope he gets a full time position at York. If anyone deserves it, its him.
I love this TA. At first I was lasked "why did i get the guy who added extra work to the course!?" In the end I was so glad I had him. Amazing guy, helpful and hard working. Wish more profs/ta's were like him.
Arrogant in general.
All I have to say his, first day of tutorial he had to go and tell us a story about how he had two dates lined up that week.... in general, he views your ideas as either right or wrong. Not very posmodern..
Picks favourites, give you no chance to succeed. The worst individual that anyone could come into contact with in an academic setting.
Good TA, but unprofessional and picks favourites. If he doesn't like you then he won't like your opinions either and will avoid letting you talk. I'm not sure how he picks his favourites but I guess it would help if you constantly tell him how great he is(that's what I noticed in our tutorial).
JS picks favorites early in his tutorial. He cares about his role as a professor, and tries to make his sessions meaningful. However,at times he comes across as a pompous windbag. He places a tremendous amount of value on his own opinions, and can be hostile to contradicting viewpoints. He should let his tutorials flow more naturally.
He is the most dedicated and passionate proff/teacher I have ever had. He makes his lectures and tutorials so interesting and informative which helps you to grasp the material and really enjoy it. He is an amazing prof and I am so greatful to have had him my first year at York. He has certainly set the bar high for my future courses.
Overall he is a very good prof. His lectures are really very interesting and engaging but his tutorials seem unorganized and he gets off topic a lot. I would say that he is a hard marker on essays. Other than his hard marking, he is a wonderful prof and what he teaches really sticks.
Jon is a great TA, very helpful and he takes his job as an educator seriously. He will leave about 500 words of helpful commentary on your essays! He does tends to favor students who make an effort, so do so and get on his good side- your year will be much more enjoyable.

Professor Jon Sufrin is by far one of the best Professor?s I have ever experienced at York University. I wanted to transfer to University of Toronto until I engaged in his first year class. His focus is mainly Canadian Studies, and at first I assumed it would be boring until I enrolled in his class, ?Context of Canadian Culture?. He makes his stude
Professor Sufrin really is the best teacher I have ever had. He is passionate about his work and it shows in his lectures. They are well put together and engaging at the same time. Professor Sufrin genuinly cares about his students education and he does what he can to help them succeed. He always replys to emails and is always willing to help.
Canadian Studies 220 is a awesome class. Great Professor. Very Helpful. Cares about students. Strongly recommend for students who want an easy A
Professor Sufrin is one of the best professor @ york. He actually cares about his students & wants them to do well. He does everything possible to help you succeed. He always reply to emails & makes time after class to help students. Lectures very straight forward & easy to follow. Fair marker & likes to give out A's. CDNS2200 is a BIRD COURSE!!
CDNS/HUMA 2200 is BIRD COURSE!!! Take this course!!! Professor Sufrin is helpful and cares about his student. He will give you a good mark.
Canadian Studies 2200 is a awesome class. Teaches you a lot about Canada. Not a lot of reading. Great Professor. Very Helpful. Cares about students. Strongly recommend for students who want an easy A.
Canadian Studies 2200 is a awesome class. Not a lot of readings. Don't need to go to every class. Great Professor. Very Helpful. Cares about students. Strongly recommend for students who want an easy A
Professor Sufrin is passionate about Canada. He returns e-mails promptly and is one of the most compassionate professors with whom I have had the privilege of studying. I loved learning more about our country and what makes Canada unique. It should be a mandatory course for all Canadian universities.
He's brilliant! The best professor at York. Very knowledgeable & insightful. He involves everyone in the discussions & elaborates the stuff clearly. Teaches you how to think & react to the current economic, history & financial affairs of Canada. Taking his CDNS/HUMA 2200 course is highly recommended!! He's an easy B+ and willing to give out an A!!
Jon is the most dedicated and passionate professor I have ever had. His lectures and tutorials are interesting. He helps every student so they can grasp the material and really enjoy it. CDNS 2200 should be a mandatory course for all Canadian universities!
It is a must take course if you attend york u. It is an interesting course. You will learn a lot. Jon is an awesome professor. Highly recommend students to take this class.
Jon is extremely helpful and engaged in his teaching, and he really puts in an effort to make the course interesting for his students. He is approachable, friendly, and down-to-earth, and knows his stuff. Recommend taking his class.
i became a canadian stuides major because of Jon's role in HUMA 1200 in 09/10. extremely approachable, i had beer and wings with him earlier this year. provides every opportunity for everyone in the class to succeed. always makes the students know that their opinions are welcome in his classroom, constantly asks "what do you think?"
I don't think I need to repeat all the the good things that everyone wrote about Jon. I simply think that he is AWESOME!!!
My favourite prof at York. I took HUMA 1200 with him and he is the reason I took CNDS 2200 as well. His lectures are interesting and he proves that he is here to help you succeed at a University level. Easy B+ and if you show him you work hard he will bump you to an A :) Make sure you take one of his classes you will not be dissapointed!
One of the vest profs ive had at york u. I usually hated humanities but his classes were very fun and interesting. It is important to read all the novels assigned to do well in he class. His grading policy was also very fair, whenever he graded our essays there would be a full page describing what parts of the essay were good and how we could impr
how is it possible that he makes me so happy to attend school?! .... SHOCKER!! he's definitely FRIENDLY and highly recommended! WAY TO GO JON!! :)
Ok, yes, arrogant. Yes, he can be tough in grading. Provides very interesting content and material, is open to other points of view, even those that are opposed to his. Like most, doesn't like to have his opinion trampled like some think they are capable of doing to a scholar. Approachable, interesting, and fair. Must do the work for this course.
Excellent prof! Soo interesting, and actually made me critically think about what's going on in the world. Very knowledgeable and encourages students to do well by being approachable. Lectures and readings are extremely MANDATORY, and things on the exam are things he constantly repeats and emphasizes. Take good notes and listen and you'll do fine.
This guy knows his Sh&$@:/;!!! Jon is the man!
Jon is one of the most fair and interesting teachers I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by. He treats each of his students with nothing less than absolute respect. I would never have selected a course with Canadian centered content, but honsetly, it was one of my absolute favorite courses I took, and it was simply a joy to attend!
only class I attended all year. very clear, interesting. by far the best elective taken at York so far. if you pay attention in class, keep up with readings/quizzes, the exams are cake. Jon really knows his stuff and with some effort, you ll get much more than a grade.
An amazing Prof. Very helpful, his lectures are very interesting. Exams are fair. Glad i had this course with him.Highly recommend. He is very energetic and cool teacher. Always wanted to attend his lectures.
I absolutely LOVED this course. The readings we had to do were entertaining, thought provoking and the discussions in tutorial only added on to how interesting it was. Jon Sufrin not only made an amazing lecturer but he was an even better TA.He’s the reason I switched my major to humanities. He has an amazing personality too, one of the best I know
Great teacher! He explains concepts very well, makes it easy for to understand his course. Quite a bit of reading but he balances with good movies and fun assignments. Exremely helpful. To do well, just attend all classes, do the reading, contribute in tutorials, ask for advice, take and and do your best.
Easy, interesting, inspiring, funny, and overall a great prof!
AMAZING prof! He really cares for his students and wants them to be successful. He is very passionate about the course material which makes you interested (had a lecture on hockey and olympics!!). I am a KINE major and i enjoyed it alot. You will get the mark you deserve if just put in the time into attending class and reading. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Nice prof. Very fair. You get what you put in. Even if you don't understand something, he'll take the time to explain it. Answers his emails promptly. Did a great job encouraging discussions in class. Hope the rest of my profs are as interesting as he is, but I fear that's not the case.
One of the most supportive professors I have ever gotten to work with. Is passionate about what he does and the relationships he builds with his students are definitely memorable. My tutorial was worth going to and his criticism and feedback has made me analyze and think about things from a different perspective.
Challenging work but he made it less so by clearly explaining steps and tips not only in detail, but in methods that were insightful, passionate, and engaging. He made every tutorial count and full of substance (I never missed one!), and was invested in his students doing well in a way that was encouraging and supportive rather than pressuring. A+!
Best prof ever.
Awesome teacher
Jon is a great professor that teaches a very enjoyable course. Normally I want to get out of a class long before its done, but Jon created an atmosphere that draws you in and makes you want to stay longer. Highly recommended.
Professor Sufrin is hands down one of the best at York. He is very smart and has a natural ability to teach. His class is very interesting. The work load is heavy and readings are mandatory in order to get a good mark. His power point slides is one of the most organized that I have seen in 5 years at York. I definitely recommend this course.
Jon is an amazing professor. I know the course sounds really boring, esp. if you're just taking it for a gen ed, but his class was by far my favorite class I've ever taken. I continue to take with me the lessons I've learned from him. He is extremely helpful, caring, and fair. The readings are immense but keep up and you should do fine. Got an A.
One of the best professors at York. Attending lecture is mandatory and you have to do the readings. Put in the work and you will be fine. In terms of TA's, Harmony is a nice TA. She is very helpful and will support you.
Helpful professor. Interesting lectures. The reason I did well was because I asked for help when I needed it. Very approachable, and answers emails quickly!
By far the best teacher ever. He's very passionate and engaged in the classroom, making students adamant to learn and attend his classes. It's easy to earn extra marks with the "badges" he gives out. He will make you a better writer and thinker. Follow everything he says in class and take his constructive criticism seriously and you'll do fine.
Prof Sufrin was one of the best professors I've had at York. He is extremely fair and truly cares about his students. I came into the class nervous about my writing skills, but Prof Sufrin is so approachable and encourages you to ask for help. There are many opportunities to do well for students that participate in class and try their best.
Judgemental and rude to any student he doesnt like. Unclear on his assignments, loves to hear his own voice. Avoid at all costs.
I had a terrific experience in Dr. Sufrin's class. The material was fun and engaging and the homework deemed very fair, his performance was excellent as an instructor he was very helpful throughout the course whether it be class discussions or critical feedback for assignments. If you love participation and discussions this is the class 4 you!
Such an inspirational professor with his students' best interest at heart. There for you; very helpful, approachable, down-to-earth. It's a 9 credit so expect some work, but he's VERY reasonable; every assignment's requirements are given to you, if you meet them you get min. 70%. My absolute FAVOURITE professor. Take his tutorial, he's hilarious.
YOU READ A LOT OF BOOKS IN HIS COURSE WRIT/HUMA 1700. So be prepared. I think you read 1 book every week. There are quizzes frequently, and long time-consuming assignments. Great prof! He's a funny and smart guy. He's also very kind to students who take an interest in his course. This is not a class you can skip and do well in. LOTS of work.
Jon gives clear and interesting lectures, even though he does not post most slides on moodle, but he encourages everyone to come out to lecture and learn. He's a fun, sporty guy and will help you become a better writer!
Professor Sufrin is amazing. Students really find this course helpful in making them a better writer. He breaks down components of writing by teaching it through organized and relevant lectures. He delivers the lectures with enthusiasm and excitement making things appear seamless. He cares about student's success and gives extensive feedback.
Jon is a great professor who is naturally good at delivering lectures. He provides students with detailed powerpoints that helps in identifying ways to improve their writing. I strongly recommend taking this course to help with critical essay writing in other courses and ensuring success when it comes to essays. He is down to earth and funny.
Jon did a really good job of making damage control interesting. I think that this class could have been extremely boring without Jon's enthusiasm for the topic. His rubrics are very clear so if you follow them carefully and participate regularly you will get a good grade. I liked this class a lot and I think that my classmates enjoyed it too. A+
Professor Sufrin is real educator, he truly cares about helping students learn and transition into academic life. His course is considered a general education course and it really is, covering a wide range of material. His love for writing and material he shares in class really shows in his teaching and if you put in the work, you will do well.
Jon was a really hard maker but if you do what he asks for, you can pass. Class is mandatory and he notices if you skip and he does not put the slides online. That guy could talk forever and he gets carried away easily.
Jon is an incredible educator and speaker; the lessons he taught in WRIT1700 have remained with me and helped me develop as a writer (and thinker). His lectures are always engaging, and it is clear he truly wants his students to succeed even beyond the classroom. Caring, helpful, states his expectations clearly, and genuinely interesting.
DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU ARE NOT IN PROFESSIONAL WRITING. I am a good writer as I am in a Liberal Arts program. He gives special treatment to professional writers. Doesn't help out people from other majors. Gives good feedback though.
The only people who'd write like those below don't want to do any work and want a bird course. You do multiple assignments, but he gives tons of feedback on everything and lets you rewrite. He was happy to help when I asked him. Yeah he talks a lot, but he is interesting and funny. Also, he posts all notes connected to assignments. Good course.
Horrible prof. Lectures are utterly useless. Extremely petty, rude, egotistical and obnoxious when responding to emails and students questions who of which are not in his tutorial. Worst prof I've ever had. Seems great at first until you have a conversation one on one with him and once he gets too comfortable being the superior in a lecture. 0/10.
Jon is the absolute worst. He is full of himself, and doesn't appreciate any feedback. He is a man who likes to hear his own voice. If you do not have to take a course with him, don't do it. His readings don't connect to the lecture, and the lecture has nothing to do with tutorial. Bottom line, avoid at all costs.
I took 2 courses with Jon (digital writing and writ 1003) and thoroughly enjoyed both classes. I can honestly say that he is my favourite professor. He is a fair grader but is incredibly accommodating and will answer any questions you may have. Lectures are interesting and witty; not dry. Would 100% recommend a class with him, without a doubt.
Jon Sufrin is a great lecturer and it shows that he cares a lot about his students and their success in class. He is very personable and easy to talk to, so I would highly recommend taking one of his courses. His lectures have a substantial amount of information, but he clarifies and simplifies a lot. Taking one of his classes is a smart choice.
I can attest that Jon Sufrin is a great writing professor regardless of your major; I'm an accounting major and I've thoroughly enjoyed both of his WRIT1702 and WRIT2004 courses, which I highly recommend taking to improve your writing prowess. Warning: if you don't plan to attend/participate in lectures or tutorials, these courses aren't for you.
I got lucky and had Jon as my TA. Great lecturer, & gives great feedback. If you go to tuturial & lecture and participate you'll be fine. Also, if you use his office hours he'll help you out with your essays a lot. Often gets carried away in lecture but i was never bored. A lot of assignments so be prepared to do the work or don't take the course.
Jon is a great Prof. He's an enthusiastic lecturer and a great teacher. He's very personable and has been one of my favourite Profs. Try to get in his tutorial if you can!
Honestly my fav prof at York and I wish I could take more classes with him. Definitely try to get into his tutorial! Do the work, attend class, & you'll be fine. There's A LOT of reading material (but he chooses good books, stuff that makes you think) I kept every single book from his class, which I don't usually do lol. Awesome guy and fair grader
The best teacher I ever had. What else is there to say?
Jon talks a lot in lectures, but is a very engaging lecturer. He posts everything on moodle. Tutorials are necessary for writing assignments because of peer editing. The class is great if you're new to university or if you need to improve your essay writing. It helps you understand how university/humanities papers are organized.
Wow. Jon is honestly one of the best professors at York, probably my favourite professor. So incredibly authentic, enthusiastic, and caring about his course and students. The assignments were engaging, relatable, and pertained directly to professional writing and creative writing. So glad I got to be in the class, it really made me a better writer.
I'm someone who avoids the majority of my lectures but Jon's are actually worth going to. The content is streamlined and the delivery engaging. The grading criteria is clear but Jon is always open to talk about content, marking, or just advice. My personal interactions with him were always very positive, on and offline as he is polite and helpful.
I have taken a couple of Jon's courses so far. He always makes the material interesting and he is very approachable if you require clarification. Jon gives helpful and specific feedback when returning assignments. He creates a very comfortable atmosphere for all and he is absolutely hilarious! He genuinely seems to enjoy his work and his students!
Not an interesting professor at all, lecture had so many notes and would repeat so many concepts. Every other week something was due and believe me, TA's and the prof are hard markers! So many readings and books involved, books that are irrelevant to the course. However, he is a very passionate professor.
This class I was the most nervous for stating the semester, as everyone told me I would be crazy to take a writing class. Turns out this was the best class that I learned the most lessons from. Jon as a professor and a TA has been the best one I have come across at my time at York. This class I would recommend to any writer at any level!
He cares and makes you work hard. But if you follow his instructions you become a better writer for sure. Lots of work but also pay off.
Worst Prof ever!!!! I thought he could make me a better writer but he just made me want to not be one.
I really enjoyed his lectures he was loud enough not to use microphone. His tutorials were very helpful. There was a lot to do writing and reading. He helped me quite a bit with my essays, challenging but one of my favorite classes.
I highly recommend this class! Jon is probably the best Professor I've had throughout my entire time as a student at York University. I did very well! Jon really cares about his students and their academic achievements. Let's just say by taking his class there will never be a dull moment. By the end of this course you will be a better writer.
Professor Sufrin is very personable and motivational. His lectures and tutorials are interesting. He treats his students with respect. If you listen to his feedback, you can do really well in his class. He usually responds to emails very quickly. Attendance and participation are important, as is keeping up with the readings.
such a sweet guy and super smart. your mark heavily depends on your TA. Lectures were always interesting and no tests or exam
Really great prof, you can really tell how much he actually cares. He gives awesome feedback and is really friendly and easy to approach. My only comment is his lectures can be kinda repetitive but they are still pretty informative. He also replies to emails really fast which is nice. Overall really chill down to earth guy (:
Really enjoyed this class. Must-take for first year students, will lay a foundation of writing skills that will serve you for the rest of your academic career. Jon really cared about his students, not just making them good writers but also that they are handling stress and keeping mentally healthy. The readings are fun. The feedback was good.
Prof Sufrin was awesome! He is so funny and charming and I enjoyed his lectures, although they were a bit long. He did a great job teaching writing and I have definitely learned a few things. Try to appease your TA and check off all the course concepts in your work to get a good grade! This course is hard work but worth it for Jon, a great prof.
My class was asynchronous with him, but he came across as very kind and funny during his pre-recorded lectures. There's one short tutorial assignment per week for participation, then one big essay that you submit in small parts throughout the semester. This allows for lots of feedback and time to work on it.
Professor Jon Sufrin is by far one of the best professors I have had during my academic career. I entered his course (AP/HUMA1700) as a beginning writer and came out stronger and more confident. Professor Jon Sufrin gives amazing lectures that keeps his class engaged at all times. I highly recommend Professor Sufrin!
Jon is the best prof ive had till now at York. Cares about his students, will give extensions, really knowledgeable about his lectures. Try to get him as you TA, his tutorials are really fun and there's a lot of opportunity to get extra grades.
amazing professor! surprised by how engaging and creative his lectures were. very passionate about teaching and very knowledgeable of different literatures. highly recommend getting him as TA as he gives great feedback on his expectations. must read the material before tutorial he asks for your opinion and will base activities on them.
Prof Sufrin is engaging and challenging, but his guidance pays off. While lectures can be repetitive, the feedback helps improve writing. Attendance is key, and tools like Unstuck study and ChatGPT aid study prep. Overall, a rewarding course.
This professor was transformative in how I wrote. Assignments had plenty of feedback and opportunities to learn. This course should be something that all students take at some point because it will make them a better writer. The lectures will teach you about several types and aspects of writing. If you want to improve, this is the course to take.
