Great teacher that will help you really achieve a good grade if you actually pay attention in class. He goes over a lot of examples, so don't skip class!
Really great teacher. It is difficult to keep up with the class, but that's the nature of the material and not a teaching issue. He actually makes math funny and entertaining, and he is quite friendly and approachable if asked for help.
Really friendly, awesome guy. He's good-humored, he stays up late answering questions on the forum, and he has interesting and funny relevant stories during lecture. I'm really a fan of him, I think he's a great guy and great professor. Super hard class but that isn't his fault, it's just heavily condensed material.
He is probably the most helpful professor I have ever had! Any question, any time of the day, he is there to answer it! and me, not being so great at math he is the professor I needed. This class on the other hand, is not my favorite. I spend 5 hours each night JUST doing the mandatory homework... Its not Jonah's fault though. overall, HES GREAT
He is very good at explaining the concepts in math 120. Moreover, He goes over a lot of examples, so don't ever skip class!!
If you ever take a math class, take it with Jonah. I hate math, but I at least can manage because Jonah is the professor. Very funny and is very helpful. would recommend.
Awesome teacher. He is probably the best math teacher there is out there at the U. Always looking out for the students and extending office hours to discuss grades and other concerns. Material is tough, but it's nice to know the prof cares and acknowledges it's tough as well. Love him and I know anyone else who takes his class will too.
Jonah is a great professor. He tries to help his students as much as possible (it's the math department who doesn't give professors much leeway). He interested in math, and always has time to help his students. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. ATTEND ALL LECTURES.
Young, quirky teacher. Made class a little less boring with his pokes at humor. Very hard material and homework but the midterms and final were not as hard as the work. Spent a lot of time doing homework and had to go to CLUE a lot. But I ended up very happy with my grade and his teaching in general. He was the right guy to teach the class.
AMAZING teacher! Very helpful! Class was VERY hard, had to put in a good 4 hours a day on homework, but Jonah made this class a lot more fun that it would have been!
Lots of homework for this class, Dr. Ostroff does whatever he can in the lecture time but that usually isn't enough so Office Hours are encouraged. He is very helpful since concepts and homework can be difficult at times. Overall, not as bad a class as people make it out to be, just a lot of time put in.
Jonah is the best math prof. He is funny, helpful, and really nice. He really wants to make sure that everyone understands what he's teaching. Also, if you use the discussion forum on WebAssign it's REALLY helpful! USE IT! and TAKE HIS COURSE! He's a great guy
He is a very good professor. He is really funny and he makes going to math actually fun. He is really good at his job and his lectures are really helpful.
Jonah made me love math! He is hilarious and I honestly felt he wanted to help you! If you could get Jonah as a professor I am positive you would learn something new. Great guy, even better professor!
Best math professor that I could have asked for. He's hilarious and super nice. He is probably one of the only math professors that actually has way too many students show up to office hours because he's so helpful and easy to talk to.
If I could take Jonah for every math class, I would. I knew most of the stuff already due to HS calc but still went to office hours/class because he's such a great guy. The worst part about him is he's not teaching 125 next quarter.
Jonah is simply the best. Not only is a fantastic teacher, but he actually made me enjoy math lectures. The homework may be significantly more difficult than anything you've ever experienced, but worry not. His tests are pretty easy. 10+ for his office hours too. Go to them. My only complaint about Jonah is that he isn't teaching 125!!! Miss him!!
He was simply the best! Very understanding and truly wants his students to succeed. A refreshing change of pace from some of the other professors at such a large, public, research focused university.
Great professor! He has an amazing sense of humor. I took him for precalc and now taking him for math 124. If you come to class and do the homework you will do great the average of midterms in his class is usually around 80% at least in 124 its been around there. His grading is really nice too the lower midterm is weighed less than the better 1. :)
Jonah is the best math professor that I have ever had! He made calculus enjoyable and easy to understand. It is obvious, he has a great love for the subject. His lectures are easy to follow, and his grading methods on tests are great. Also, he is very understanding with any problems you may have with the course. Plus he writes his own math songs!
Best professor I have had at UW, or in most of my other schooling. Very knowledgeable and so so interesting. Jonah is a great person and does his best with curves so everyone can do their best. His creative examples and home recorded songs make his class the best!! Would love to have my next math class with him.
Jonah is AWESOME. Best professor I've had yet at UW. He really cares about the success of his students and puts in a lot of extra time and effort between his discussion forums and extended office hours before tests. His lectures are very informative and he gives lots of examples. You always know what's expected of you! He's a great teacher.
Jonah is the best!
Take Math 111 with Jonah!! He is a great, easygoing professor and he really cares about his students. If you ever have questions about class, exams, or homework he will answer your questions almost immediately on the online forum. Class averages tend to be in the 90s, but if you just go to lecture and take notes you will do good! Easy 4.0
If you have Jonah, you are blessed. I have not taken math in a very lonngggggg time prior to his class and was worried at my ability to succeed but even without touching the ebook, and just attending lectures, I did way beyond imaginary! He is just so clear and takes baby steps before advancing, is so active on the HW form, and so easy to talk to.
Jonah is by far my favorite professor at UW I think I will ever have. Even though I'm not the best at math and this class was difficult, I absolutely loved going to lecture. Jonah is very funny, enthusiastic, smart, and is a great teacher.
Hands down, the best math professor at UW. The material is hard but Jonah made it engaging and exciting. His tests do not try to trick you and are extremely fair. He genuinely cares about his students. The first 3 weeks are demoralizing but it gets easier. Homework load is heavy and the math study center is your friend!
Best math professor I've ever had! He's completely dedicated to his students understanding the material and is genuinely excited about teaching! Very approachable and a fair grader. Take his class!!!
Coolest professor ever. He is so funny that I actually enjoyed going to class sometimes and his explanations are great too. Definitely recommend him for calculus.
Jonah was an awesome professor--one of the best I've had so far. He genuinely loves math and therefore presents the material in an enthusiastic way. He is able to solve/answer problems from different angles if a student is having difficulty understanding. He is also funny which made lecture more enjoyable. I recommend him hands down!
Jonah is such a great professor! He makes lectures interesting and he tries to make the examples a bit more relatable. Definitely wish he was teaching 125.
Jonah is a very cool and helpful Professor. He looks and does his math something like the young version of Albert Einstein. I would recommend his class.
I was one of those artistic people who would say "I hate math" every other day. It's thanks to Jonah that Calculus and I became friends. Seriously, Jonah is the best. I wish all other math professors were like him.
Ostroff is the best professor I've had so far. He is always enthusiastic and helpful, and you can tell he wants you to succeed in the course. Also, the way he explains the coursework is thorough and easy to understand. 11/10 would recommend this prof.
He is a really fun teacher to be around, maybe because he is young. He is very clear on lectures. The only downside is that he is a lefty, so you have to wait until he finish writing to see the notes. Other than that, he is a really great teacher.
Hands down the best math professor EVER! Unlike some other math professors I had in the past, he can actually understand and help students with their struggles in calculus. I got a 4.0 with a fair amount of study, wish he could be teaching 125 right now...
Jonah is the greatest man ever.
If every math teacher were like Jonah, the world would be a better place, hands down. He is perhaps the best math teacher I've ever had, and is in general just a cool guy to talk to.
Jonah's great! He's super helpful and explains everything really well. He's also really adorable. Definitely a great math professor to have.
Funny and enthusiastic (but not overly so) guy, which made math somewhat more enjoyable. His lectures and explanations are very clear. Does lectures on his iPad and uploads notes to his website, so it's okay if you miss classes sometimes, although it can be difficult to understand what steps are happening without attending lecture. Tests are fair.
I got a bad grade in this class but it is entirely my own fault. Jonah was an awesome teacher and he actually cared about how you did. Make sure to study. Just doing the homework will not cut it. And don't leave studying for the last minute either. Always available outside of class and on the forum so if you have a question ASK!
Jonah is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares about how you're doing in his class. He has a great sense of humor and explains the concepts in an easy way. Make sure to pay attention in lectures, take good notes, and practice old exams in preparation for midterms and the final.
Jonah is so nice and If you see he teach the class, take his.
I'm currently auditing this class, meaning taking it to prepare me for 124 not for credit and I could not recommend this class more. After dropping out of 124 within the first week because I felt like I didn't understand calc well enough this professor has restored my faith and love for math. Show up, take good notes, and you will succeed.
Jonah is definitely the best teacher for Pre-calc at UW. He uses new technology for his lectures, is clear when explaining concepts, and his awkwardly hilarious personality makes class fun. However, the homework is pretty hard but fortunately the midterms are easier than the homework.
Hilarious and enthusiastic professor, did an awesome job thoroughly explaining concepts. He was very dedicated to the success of his students.
Absolutely love Jonah. He's one of the most clear, understandable math teachers I have EVER had. He's one of my favorites. My boyfriend got him the quarter after me, and he loves the class too. He's an awesome professor, and super laid back. He's always willing to help, and his explanations are awesome.
Jonah is an amazing math professor. He cares so much about making sure all of his students succeed, providing lots of resources for studying and learning all the material for exams. That said, his exams are pretty tough. Definitely a time crunch, and there aren't very nice numbers. Other than that, I'd definitely recommend him.
Jonah is a great professor. I went into this class expecting it to be harder than Math 125, but I did way better in this class than in 125. He sometimes goes really slow and messes up a lot but he always offers extra help and it very nice about it. The tests were manageable and if you get an A on one of the two midterms you'll get an A class
Jonah can relate to students amazingly and has a strong sense of humor. Lectures are perfectly clear, and while midterms are hard, the strategies he expects to solve his problems are completely reasonable. He gave out 4.0s to the top 10% of my class, only requires 90% on HW for full credit, holds his own review sessions and is easy to talk to.
He is very clear and organized in his lectures and shows helpful examples. The exams are hard mostly because they are long, so you need to really understand the material and do lots of practice exams. If you can do the problems quickly you can do well on the exams. The medians were about 70% . I would recommend him because he is a great teacher.
Jonah is one of my favorite professors so far. He is very clear with his lectures notes and the examples that he provides in class. WebAssign is how he gives homework, and I believe that it is a decent amount of homework if it is spread out. Midterms and Final are fair if you do the homework and do a lot of practice problems.
Overall, really awesome professor. His lectures & examples are very clear cut and he keeps it interesting by cracking a few jokes once in a while. Definitely expect WebAssign homework, but he's always very reasonable about the time to turn it in. Midterms are hard, but you are in college!!! He's one of the best math professors here, take advantage!
Jonah is AWESOME. I loved his teaching style and he is so so smart. He provides lots of sample problems and exams and if you do them, you will do well.
I've been fortunate enough to have him for two classes, and I absolutely love him! He makes learning fun, has a great sense of humor, and grades fairly. Definitely recommend his class to anyone and everyone!
Took him in my freshmen year. Although I took calc before, he explains concepts really clearly and is easy to understand. He's quite humurous too and keeps the lectures interesting. He really cares about students and holds review sections and answers questions in class. Great Professor.
He is an amazing lecturer, by far one of the best in the math department! This class was really easy for me, since I had retaken it since high school. He gives about two homework assignments per week and each takes about an hour. Also, if you ever need help and can't make it to his office hours he will schedule an appointment at a time you need.
Professor Ostroff always made lectures interesting and engaging. He is one of the best math professors I have ever had.
Awesome!
Jonah is an amazing lecturer. He is funny and engaging and has a talent for making the material clear to understand. If you have a question he will stop immediately to make sure you understand and is very helpful during office hours. He also holds an exam review outside of class before every midterm and final, which is very helpful. #1 math teacher
Very clear lectures and seems to be very helpful in office hours and the discussion boards.
Great professor, easy to understand lectures. The exams are difficult.
Math has really been a struggle for me since coming to college but Ostroff seems to want his students to do well. It requires a lot of work but as long as you reach out, he will do whatever he can to help. The TA I had was really good too! Quite a bit of homework, but in order to do well, you should definitely be completing it and then some!
Jonah is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He presents the material very clearly and is excellent at answering questions. This class made math very enjoyable to me. If you are taking Math 124-126 I would recommend trying to get into his section.
Probably one of the best professors/lecturers I'll have at UW. His lectures are so helpful and essential for doing well. He has great explanations too, and he's helpful during office hours. Definitely prepared us for the final exam too.
Clear and concise with lectures. Stays after to answer any questions that students may have. Is willing to work with you until you understand material. Overall, the best Math 120 professor you can take at UW.
His lectures were extremely clear and straightforward. He provided relevant examples for every topic he taught. Attending his lectures will be a great help because he provides amazing notes that you will definitely want to refer to when preparing for his exams. Overall, Jonah and his team of TAs gave everybody the resources you needed to succeed.
Jonah is an incredible lecturer. He is clear and concise and provides lots of examples that will help you with the homework. The homework load is reasonable. He is available for help not only through email and his office hours, but also his online forum which he updates regularly. He is one of the best professors I've had here at UW!
Jonah God TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN. He is very clear, knowledgeable, and approachable and he makes math interesting and easy-ish to learn. I'm now considering applied math again because I've actually been enjoying math in his classes. A shining light in the darkness that is the math dept..
One of the best lecturers in the math department. Lectures are easy to understand. He uses technology to make vectors make a lot more sense. Test are tough, but this is a calculus course, so it's expected.
Being honest- the math department isn't the greatest. That being said, Jonah is the diamond in the rough here. He goes through material at a good pace and is very clear. You know what to expect when you take his midterms. However, the finals are created by all of the math 120 professors so beware- this was my downfall.
Jonah is probably one of the best professors at the UW math department. He's extremely brilliant and really cares about his students. His lectures are very funny but at times I didn't think they were as comprehensive as they could have been. I used the textbook to make up for the parts left out during lecture. Math 126 is hard but Jonah made it fun
He is by far my favorite math professor. Lectures are extremely clear and his expectations are what he says they are. He's very approachable and in my opinion extremely smart. He gives daily practice problems that you can do that prepare you for future midterms but are not required to do. He knows what he is doing.
I took Jonah class freshmen year and he is so far one of the must caring and greatest professors in UW. His lectures are really good, homework may take a while at first, but then you'll learn how to study more efficiently. Not that hard to pass, but don't fall behind.
He is honestly the best professor I've had at the UW!!!
He was a good lecturer, really appreciated how accessible he was outside of class! Having all of the lectures on Panopto really made a difference, would highly recommend taking his class again!
If you have to take PreCalc, do it with Jonah. He is hands down the best instructor in the math department, and makes this impossible course bearable. This class is designed to be heavy, but he tries to break everything down to easy concepts to build on. Utilize the practice problems and even the grad student tutors.
He is such a good professor! He explains the information in a really easy to understand way but he is also really cool. I think he might be the only math professor I know that included Game of Thrones and Hamilton references in a math final. Take his class if you can!
He was always available to help outside of class and did his best to make the material as understanding as possible. Even in large lectures he took his time to answer student's questions, which was very helpful!
He was clear at explaining things and always asked if anybody had any questions before moving on to a new topic. Go to quiz section, and you don't really need the course book.
Missing lecture is not a good idea but you can catch up on panopto. Quiz sections is where attendance matters because they don't often take attendance but if you miss one of the few times your participation grade goes to hell.
Definitely recommend!
Funny
Jonah is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. Very clear and informative lectures with a nice inclusion of humor! He uses technology extremely well, which helps us students out immensely (in other words, he's not just going through a poorly designed PowerPoint). Additionally, he tries to make very relevant and applicable world problems!
Seriously thank god for jonah. Made me not want to kms during math 120. He was really funny and explained everything thoroughly and clearly. He was really helpful outside of class too! Definitely go to the reviews he holds before exams. Take math with him if you can.
His lectures are rarely boring. He has great lecture notes and is very clear when explaining topics. Overall a great professor.
He made math 120 really fun and understandable. Anytime someone would ask a question, he made sure you understood. His lectures are well worth attending, as they demonstrate the ideas well.
Usually entertaining and engaging lectures. Be prepared to sink a decent amount of time into homework. About an hour per day. He does have an online homework discussion board that he maintains, so it is very easy to get help. If you can do the homework, you can do the tests. Tutorial sections are useless if you did the homework already.
Charming and funny guy, really great at trying to make calculus easy to understand. His lectures go at a good pace, not rushing through the content or going too slow. His tests are a bit harder compared to the other math 125 profs, so that's worth looking out for.
Professor Ostroff gives very clear engaging lectures. Tests are also very fair as well. As you long as you do lots of practice exams and make sure you use the study guides to study the right material, you will do fine. I'd give him a 10/10 and would definitely take his class again. If you get him, you will learn a lot and have fun in his class.
I really enjoyed taking calculus 2 with Jonah. He was a very dedicated professor who really cared about helping students understand difficult topics. He also holds review sessions before tests which can be very helpful. I also felt that his tests were easy if you did the practice exams. I am just sad that he won't be teaching math 126 next quarter.
Try to get into his section if you can! Professor Ostroff is arguable the best mathematics professor at the university. He has good lectures and his tests are pretty fair if you do all a bunch of old exams. He also holds his own review sessions before tests, which are very helpful as well. A solid 10/10!!
The Prof-Stroff! Jonah is extremely passionate about math and instruction. He's personable and extremely fair. His lectures are very well structured and he provides every resource for you to succeed. The one drawback is that his tests aren't the hardest, and people are very engaged in class, so the averages can be high. Ask about his math songs.
Good lectures
Love Jonah! He makes lectures fun and super organized. You can tell he cares about the subject and is super into whatever we are learning. The tests are pretty easy and he provides lots of opportunities to prepare. Definitely my favorite prof!
Professor Ostroff is my favorite math professor at the UW. I had him for my first quarter of math and his explanations and course layout made it very easy to succeed. His tests are just what you would expect from the lecture materials; no trick questions or difficult methods that he just expects you to know or figure out how to do.
Jonah's lectures are clear and aimed towards the homework most of the time. He makes lectures enjoyable and his word problems are sometimes fun to read as well. If you keep track of your work throughout the class, you should be fine. Just review your notes and do past midterms/finals & you are set to go.
Jonah Ostroff is a god sent. He was very knowledgable on the course material and made math interesting. The notes he gave in class were perfect so there was no reason to even use the textbook. After years of math teachers who couldn't teach he really made me love math again. He also held review sessions before exams which were helpful.
His lectures were very well put together and he made notes easy to understand. He went at a very good pace, so I never fell behind while taking notes. He gives lots of examples, which helps out a lot in the homework. He was super approachable and easy to talk to if you need help. I felt really well prepared for the exams. He wants you to do well.
Jonah Ostroff is a Godsend. Coming from someone who does not like math, he brings so much clarity to the material we learn and is great at bringing math into a siple light. He is very accessible outside of class and hosts a study session for midterms and finals. Hilarious and approachable, 100% reccomend.
Jonah was the absolute best!! His lectures were so clear and understandable. He was so helpful in preparing for midterms and the final exam as he has review sessions prior! Also super helpful that all of his lectures are recorded on panopto! Hes not only a great teacher but hes just also an all around good, funny dude.
He made 308 so easy. He has the longest office hours I've seen in my entire UW life and he is also very funny. Posts all his notes online unlike other profs but I would still recommend going to class because he can really teach. I loved his nerd jokes. The only problem is that he's such a good prof no one is lost so you can't expect much curve
Dr. Ostroff is amazing! Highly highly recommend. I hope he teaches Math 124/25/26 classes because he made me actually enjoy trig which is something I never thought I would do. He is amazing and so helpful, a great lecturer. What a gem. Plus he adds great characters to story problems so that's pretty cool.
I enjoyed Jonah as a teacher. Homework doesn't always relate to the lecture, but the test sure do. Focus on the lectures near test time to get a good grade in this class. Also he can tell some pretty funny jokes and is very open to helping out students. Would recommend if you want a solid math teacher.
I took Math 126 online with Jonah and loved it. Everyone warned me not to take an online calc class and the tests were challenging, but Jonah explains the material thoroughly and makes it way easier to understand than any other professor I've had. Bonus: His adorable cats sometimes made an appearance in lecture videos! :)
He was a fantastic teacher, gave amazing study guides and accurate homework. He was clear about what students were being tested on and his tests accurately reflected his teaching. If you are not going to go to class make sure to panopto.
Best math teacher I've had!! His lectures are always so clear since he broke each step down little-by-little. He also posted them online AND had panopto recordings. He kept the class interesting by putting spins on the math questions and inserting quirky jokes here and there. Was nervous to take this class, but ended with a 4.0!
The best math professor I've ever had, hands down. His lectures were always interesting because he's pretty funny and he goes over so many practice problems. He also holds reviews sessions before every exam. Also, one of the only prof that shows ALL work on his answers for past exams. Exams were reasonable if you study his lectures and past exams.
By far the best professor I've had at UW!
Ostroff is a really great teacher - the best math teacher I've had at UW. He makes the concepts easy to understand, and if you don't understand, he is very accessible through online forums, email and office hours. The class is hard, as are all math classes at UW but Ostroff makes it bearable.
overall such a great professor!! his notes are clear and to the point, he explains everything so well and is funny. deadass, best math professor i've ever had.
Awesome teacher. Lectures were very easy to understand, sometimes I felt like he didn't go over enough examples as I got caught up on homework a lot, but he explains everything so well. Plenty of office hours. He also gave us 30 more minutes on our midterms than the other professors. Tests were pretty hard, I wish I studied way harder.
Ostroff is an amazing teacher!! His lectures could not be more clear and it's super easy to pay attention because he is actually hilarious. Also, all lectures are posted online along with panopto recordings so if you miss class it's still super easy to keep up with material.
He was definitely the best professor I've taken for math. He was really specific about his tests and made sure his review sessions covered tricky questions for the past. Did quite well in class and would recommend for sure.
Extremely good at explaining difficult math concepts. Best professor I've had at UW so far!
He is adorable, but this class is too hard and the curve is ridiculous. To get a 4.0, you have to get 99% correctness in every work!!!
Jonah is a very funny person, however the difficulty of the exams and the homework is nowhere near what he shows as an example in his lectures. So be prepared to not understand anything on the exams and homework.
Absolutely incredible professor! Jonah is hilarious, and many of my classmates and I begged him to teach 124/125/126 in the quarters we would need to take them so we could enjoy him again. The class is challenging for some, but Jonah is very helpful when answering questions and seems to really care for his students. Terrific guy!
He makes jokes and seems super likable, but then he makes the stupidest tests that are 10x harder than any of the other calc professor's exams and assigns literally 30+ homework problems twice per week. DO NOT TAKE.
He makes funny jokes that really soften the torturedness of math class. And he's really helpful, replying email super quick. Actually his class is not that hard compared to other sections. I highly recommend him and will take his other courses if possible!
Jonah is a really good teacher, and is open and eager to answer any and all questions you may have. I found that going to office hours helps, as he is very good one on one, and will explain things to you until you understand it. That being said, you do have to do lots of work outside of class, but you should be fine as long as you stick with it.
He's one of the most amazing lecturers I've ever known. However, no matter how adorable he is, the fact that his tests are way much harder than others' can't be changed. Also, this is not his fault but his curving is ridiculous. I have 90% but only end up a little bit above the median. WTF???
Jonah is the best!!! Very accessible. Lectures are concise, along with many examples. The best thing about an online class is pacing myself when to watch the lecture videos as well as having the time to pause the video and take notes / try to reason through the process. Also, this class is larger and usually has much lower medians. Take this class!
a great prof, super caring and really wants to see students succeed. hosts out of class exam review sessions the night before the exam and theyre super helpful! grading is a bit tough but you get a cheat sheet, lots of homework that doesnt really prepare you for the exams.
I do not recommend it at all. I understood the concepts and everything because his lecture videos were fine, but I did average or below average on tests because the problems on the tests were all new problems that he never went over. I bought the textbook just in case, but it did not help much.
Prof Stroff was one of my best professors thus far, he really makes an effort to teach the course content and does it in multiple ways to help all of the students understand.
DON'T TAKE HIM 1. His lectures do not explain most of the things on the homework 2. He does not explain based on the student's perspective. He skips a LOT of steps that will confuse you He is a funny guy but not a guy for your GPA
super engaging, material wasn't difficult
Avoid if possible. Jonah's lectures were easy and clear. However, when it comes to exams, be prepared to suffer. He was not particularly helpful in exam reviewing, only provided a few words when answering online. The fact that there were almost no past finals solving steps made everyone's final week harsher.
Great math lecturer for MATH126. His teaching is a little more concise for the content of the course so be prepared to think, but the way he teaches is very enjoyable and make you like the class. His exams are pretty challenging though but that also means there is room for some mistakes. I'd definitely recommend having him for MATH126:))))
Jonah is one of the smartest professors I've had at UW. Not only is he a math legend, he is always willing to help and answer questions. The problems he gives makes you smarter without realizing. Unlike some other reviewers, I actually found his class reasonable and quite enjoyable, though to be fair I don't usually struggle with math.
The best math proffesor i have had at UW! I feel like i learned a lot from this class. The exams are tough but he prepares you very well for them if you put in the time and effort. Very accessible outside class and on piazza.
I would not recommend Jonah's online Math 126 class, take it with another professor. He makes his tests overly difficult with at least one type of problem that he expects students not to be able to solve. His lectures did not go into detail or show the types of problems on the homework. He is hilarious and nice, but avoid his online math 126.
great professor, clear lectures
Jonah is generally a nice person. However, he is not the best at teaching. I spent a majority of my time having to self learn the material because only about 60% was covered in lecture. And even the amount that was, was poorly explained. For the sake of your peace of mind, just take another professor and avoid suffering through one quarter.
Great.
Prof. Ostroff is a wonderful lecturer. He teaches the content extremely well. However, my only critique is that his tests are quite difficult in comparison to the other professors. I would take him again despite that, as his lectures were so well designed, making the multitude of topics in 126 cohesive. He is also hilarious!
His grading is really clear! And his lectures are great, well-structured! The exams are actually not that hard. Although some questions are tricky compared to other professors' exams, the questions are interesting!
Ostroff was a good lecturer and explained the content well. However, his tests are quite hard so you got to study for them. Make sure you understand the content, not just the steps. Overall pretty good professor.
I was surprised when I took this class with him considering his very high ratings on here. Don't get me wrong he's a nice guy but his lectures weren't anything special, not bad, but also not great. His tests however were much harder than most of the past exams and even felt borderline unfair. Not terrible, but also not worthy of a 4.8/5.
Cant say I recommend this class. Maybe its not normally like this without the pandemic. But currently our exams each have three questions with one intentionally being a question that weve never seen before. As a result, doing all the textbook problems and dozens of past exams has not helped me to do well. You will be graded on your creativity.
Really hard exams and no extra credit assignments. Tricky, time consuming questions on tests. If you get an average score you get 3.0 GPA if you get lower than average you get below 2.9 He teaches well but the grade you get is not worth it
He explained the concepts really well which helped me visualize what was going on behind the calculations.
Jonah is a nice guy and is really funny, but his class was pretty hard because not a ton of the homework concepts are covered in lecture so I had to teach myself a lot of the course. That said, that might be because of the strange circumstances from Covid-19. If you ask for help, though, he really does take the time to give you advice for studying.
He is a really good lecturer, but his exams are stupidly difficult. I did fine on them, but I feel like I'd be better suited if I just took another professor with easy tests. I studied a lot for each and every one of them. So TL;DR: He is a really nice guy and good lecturer, but it's prob. not worth taking him just because of his exams. I got a 3.6
His lectures are great but his exams are really hard. do not recommend taking him unless you are extremely confident. I usually get a 3.9 / 4.0 in math but i got a 3.4 in his class.
I only had Ostroff as a lecturer (exams were written by another instructor) but his recorded lectures were phenomenal. Engaging and easy to follow, even for someone like me who is not a math fan at all.
Awesome lectures, and great grading system. Only gripe is that the exams were often pretty difficult, and didn't really match the exams in the archive. Just make sure you do the lectures and practice problems.
Professor Ostroff is a great professor and his lectures are clear and easy to follow. His exams are relatively difficult but if you use the study materials he provides you'll do fine.
Prof Ostroff is a really great teacher and math 126 wasn't hard at all with him. The lectures were clear, the homework was a natural extension of the lecture material, the tests were reasonable, and best of all, in addition to regular office hours he'd also host live zoom sessions where he went over tough exam problems and answered questions.
Good choice especially for an online class. Lectures are long but rich and Prof Ostroff is accessible in many office hours. Homework was a bit heavy but not too bad as compared to previous classes in the series.
Prof Ostroff is a real good lecturer, they are clear and without unnecessary talks, 126 is totally manageable under his guidance. He proves everything so you can easily understand the conclusions. Though there are "midterms" every two weeks, but there are only three questions similar to what those in WebAssign.
I REALLY LIKED JONAH, i was depressed when i took this class and still got a 3.4, he makes math126 easy to understand and his quizzes and exams are not too bad, just study and youll be fine. Hes kind of awkward but its funny, overall really nice professor I would take him again if I could. <3 u jonah
He's great; make sure to pay attention to example problems because variations of those tend to show up on midterms.
Great professor, his lectures are clear and hes very nice and approachable in office hours. The midterms were tough because youre given a limited amount of time, but if you study and take good notes from lectures, the problems arent too bad.
The first math class I took in UW. Absolutely amazing. The homework load is not heavy and easy to get 100%. Do a lot of past papers prior to the exam and you will excel.
Lectures are clear and helpful, but pay attention to examples and take notes. Most of your grade is midterms and finals, so just make sure to take the past exams as practice and you'll be fine.
Ostroff is a fantastic professor and just a cool guy too. Gives great lectures with lots of clear and useful examples. Tests are reasonable and manageable, especially with the test archive he provides.
Jonah was super cool and his class was not that bad at all (the rate my professor page for him was not nearly as good before) - MATH 126 is a really difficult class, but Jonah intends to make your life easier. He answers every single question in chat, and he was always super helpful in-office hours.
I mean, he has cats. What more can you ask
Not a math person and really struggled with this class, but Jonah and my TA were very nice and helpful. Hes approachable, funny, active on student discussion platforms, and good at explaining difficult concepts. However, 3 exams & lots of homework was challenging. Still, if I had to take a math class, Id want Jonah again in a heartbeat.
The nicest guy in the world. The best at teaching. Take him if you can. Gem of this earth.
Amazing prof. Jonah is just honestly a very nice person and he clearly puts in a lot of thought and effort into the lectures. The lectures are structured in a way that is clear to understand. The tests are generous with partial credit if you use the right techniques. Also, he replies to emails fast.
His lectures are very fun, and he makes the tough material of calc 3 a little bit easier. Sometimes you might not understand the content from the lecture, but showing up to his office hours will help a ton, especially if it's not right before an exam. Test questions are exactly like the homework and examples in lecture.
Ostroff is by far the best math lecturer I've seen so far. I was initially disappointed to hear that 126 was going to be virtual all quarter, but he nailed the Zoom teaching and did a really great job visualizing concepts and answering student questions. He also has a good sense of humor, but doesn't let it get in the way of his lectures.
Professor Ostroff is a genuinely caring person who is very good at explaining things. His lecture notes are very helpful, and he is very reasonable with the workload. The course content itself was difficult, but that was just the nature of the content. He made students feel comfortable to ask questions and cared about students' learning.
Such an incredible professor! Math 126 is a very hard class but with Ostroffs explanations you are set! He is super caring and I would 100% recommend attending office hours he explains concepts so well and truly cares that you understand the material. Exam we’re definitely on the tough side but doing practice exams from the archive was helpful!
He is awesome and always willing to help you! I would recommend that you take professor Ostroff. However, since the Math 12X series is difficult you will have to put in some extra effort and time. Additionally, some of the test questions can be tricky/difficult, but professor Ostroff always is available for help.
Honestly the best stem prof I've had at uw so far. Math 126 is a lot of content and he did an excellent job of organizing materials and making it seem a lot more manageable (no wasted class time on stuff you don't need to know). Exams could be tricky but there's a whole archive of practice and resources to do well. Overall a great end to 12x
Jonah is amazing; willing to meet with individuals for specific help. He organized the list of content needed for exams and genuinely wants his students to succeed. He is the best professor I have had at UW. Exam questions can get tricky, but practice with those types of problems makes everything seem doable and more approachable.
Despite the difficulty of the class Prof. Ostroff is an amazing professor. His office hours were great and he and the TAs were always willing to answer questions. The pacing of the content was a little weird, and his exams are pretty difficult, but he gives you a lot of resources and materials to work with to help you do well.
Prof Ostroff really cares about his students and is probably one of my fav. professors. The class overall is not that bad as long as you attend the lectures. Occasionally his cats will make a guest appearance as well!
professor ostroff is really nice and is good at explaining things. However the exams are very tricky and the online homework is kind of alot. it just depends if you are good at understanding math content or not. Otherwise he presents the class with alot of resources and help! you wont succeed unless you put in the work
Ostroff is a really amazing person but the exams are INSANELY difficult. The material covered in notes is more surface level / skimming and then test included deeper thinking and broader applications. A lot of the times there were questions that required you to recall one specific thing he said one time in lecture. Great guy, Hard tests.
Dr. Ostroff is an absolutely excellent teacher. His passion in mathematics as well as his thorough explanations reignited my enjoyment in math. He singlehandedly is the reason why I'm considering a Math relevant major.
Ostroff is the best math prof I've ever had. He is thorough in explaining difficult concepts and is very helpful during office hours. His exams are brutally challenging, and there's no way around it, but he makes time for students after midterms to discuss their grades and next steps with them. Improved from a 40 on MT1 to a 59/60 on MT2!
Jonah is a great lecturer and I had no trouble keeping up even though the lectures were online. He is easily reachable outside of class and responds to emails and EdSTEM posts quickly. His teaching is very clear, I barely had to look at the textbook to keep up with the class.
Professor Ostroff's online 126 lectures are awesome! but just be aware sometimes it might be bc materials are out of date so you might see stuff he hasn't covered in webassign, then you might need to do while learning or read the textbook. There are also weekly practice quizzes which are graded based on completion, but not a big portion of grades.
This is the best math professor I have ever had. I took the online section for 126 and the lectures are amazing, weekly quizzes graded on completion, and extra credit opportunities. Jonah is very caring and very accessible (he even joined our class discord to help with questions). Make sure to do practice midterms and you should be fine.
Professor Ostroff is awesome because he makes calculus easier to understand, he's very clear about what's expected, he answers questions very well, and he's just a very nice person as well. The only thing I did not like about this class was the WebAssign homework, but he doesn't control what problems are on there. But overall, great class!
Ostroff was a great professor. I really struggle with math and he explained things excellently. I found that the homework could be pretty difficult and overwhelming, but that could because I am bad at math lol.
After 124 and 125, I was ready to be over with the intro calc series and was expecting another horrible grade. Ostroff's class was not like my previous calc classes. I was able to keep up and really enjoyed the online format and organization. He explains concepts really well and the homework he assigns really helps with exam prep.
Absolutely love Ostroff! Everything bad I've ever heard about him had to do with the disastrous curve of the entire math department. Super helpful and explanatory. Also, he was perfect for the online format as he gave enough examples and eextra material to make up for the lack of quiz section. Take Ostroff if possible!!
Took Prof Ostroff for two UW calc classes (124, 126). He is a great lecturer who gets to the point and is very friendly. Also quickly responds to questions whether that be on ed, email, or discord. Would highly recommend!
I had Prof. Ostroff for hybrid math 126, so I never actually had a lecture with him in-person. That said, his lectures were extremely clear and well-done. As a result, there was never really a time where I felt like I would have needed to ask him a clarifying question, so I didn't mind the online lectures much. Great professor!
Ostroff had great lectures and the homework wasn't too hard, but the midterms and finals were awfully hard. You can do practice midterms but they are also way harder than the homework, but I guess that's just how these stupid weed out classes are. In the quiz sections there is Q&A and practice midterms. The Q&A sessions were hit or miss.
I took this class online asych but I still really enjoyed the online lectures. Professor Ostroff was an engaging lecturer and good at explaining difficult topics. This class was hard and the HW took a while but that is true of all the math classes here. The tests were challenging but manageable if you did the HW, plus you got to bring a note sheet
Would 100% recommend taking 126 online as long as you have the self-discipline to keep up with the material on your own! Ostroff is incredibly clear, and his lectures are super helpful; also super quick with responses through the online discussion board. Exam questions can be a little unusual, since he likes to test for a deeper understanding.
I took Math 126 online with Professor Ostroff and I would highly recommend this course if you're the type of student who will stay on top of recorded lectures. His exams are very fair and easy to predict, I never felt that I was asked unreasonably difficult questions. I also found that 126 is much easier than 125.
I would 100000% recommend taking 125 with Prof. Ostroff. He is incredibly clear with explanations, he really cares about his students, and his lectures are super helpful; super super quick with responses through the online discussion board as well. Exam questions are very fair and he provides a tiny bit of extra credit. Thank you Prof. Ostroff!
The best math professor I've had, took his hybrid class and the lectures were entertaining and taught the content well, Profstroff is incredibly open to helping students and his midterms are extremely reasonable. A tough class, as all UW Math classes seem to be, but definitely not as difficult or exhausting as these classes with other professors.
The best Calc instructor in UW I ever had. His lectures are interesting and professor himself is fun as a person. I took his hybrid session, and I never had to come to quiz section due to works in quiz section being accessible online. He has very generous grading system so it was very manageable despite being a weed out course.
Solid math prof. I had him asynchronous for math 126 and lectures were crystal clear, and I'm not the smartest or best at math. He's also so accessible. I submitted a midterm regrade request on a random Sunday and precisely 3 minutes later he replied and reviewed my regrade. Phenomenal professor, phenomenal response time. You can't go wrong.
One thing I really like Professor Ostroff is that he always start the class with a very basic concepts and explanation to the main point of each day's lecture (i.e. motivation). Moreover, he always demonstrate a lot of examples that will be very useful in doing webassign homework and the exam problems. He made a very positive classroom environment
I came in with a very weak calculus background. His explanations and help in responding to Ed questions and setting up office hours outside of allotted times when I couldn't make his normal times made a world of difference.
Ostroff>>Loveless
Professor Ostroff is an excellent math instructor. His online lectures are engaging and he's super helpful in answering questions. I found unstuckstudy and ChatGPT helpful for preparing for the challenging exams. Definitely take this class if you're up for the workload.
Amazing professor, had him for hybrid section (recorded lectures in person quiz sections), lectures were extremely clear, sample problems given in lecture were pretty much what you'd need to know for the test. I'm not great at calculus, but the way he lectures is so clear. Responds to posts on Ed pretty much the second you post them. Take him!!!
Ostroff is THE BEST professor for Math 126. He gives the highest percentage of 4.0s (~15% compared to other professors only giving 12-15%), and is very lenient on grading (you only miss a point if you make a mistake). Online lectures mean that the average/median is lower but thats good if you watch the videos. His office hours are also fun to go to
Great lectures
Very great professor. The video explanations are very clear and the notes are easy to read. If you have a question, ask it on ed discussion and get an almost immediate response. One of the best teachers in the math department at the University of Washington. Don't miss out on taking his class if you like online classes.
amazing professor :) hybrid class was online lectures & in person quiz sections -- online lectures were super great and clear! office hours are very helpful. take hybrid if u can with him. one of the best math profs at uw
Great professor. Clearly explains things in multiple ways, tabs out to Desmos to visualize ideas, midterms are noticeably less messed up than other professors. Chill class to just study and learn the material without too much stress. Take Ostroff if you can, and if you enjoy hybrid classes.
For some reason i had a hard time understanding his pre-recorded lecture videos and the style in which he presented them.
Neat straightforward lectures, helpful worksheets, helpful test syllabus material, and overall good energy!
Lectures often recap the pre-class videos, to the degree where you could arguably get away with not watching the pre-class videos at all. In my opinion, this isn't a bad thing: the lectures are clear and the worked examples in class are very useful. Lots of opportunities for asking questions and collaborating with others in lecture / quiz sections.
Sometimes good at explaining new topics, but he rarely uses actual 3D visuals(just some plain drawings) Sometimes explains things by just saying what he thinks they are, also pretty bad at writing midterm questions, write problems that never taught in lecture, which end up being like 30% of the points (I guess every math professor does this though)
My roommates all had different Professors, after the fall quarter, I would say he's the best one. Even let me borrow his calculator on the final when I left mine at my dorm.
extremely cool guy! would rec the online ver. great, pre-recorded lectures and minimal hw. you can and should go in-person if you want!! pretty sure he didn't know i was asynch until the final (you take it in different rooms). go to office hours (jonah has 3 office hours a week! honestly really cool of him) and it's basically impossible to fail.
Fire professor, unironically one of the best I've had here. Great lecturer and funny guy, also super helpful during office hours. He's also flexible with letting you switch between in person and asynch classes. Just be aware that the midterms and final are worth the majority of your grade though I don't think that's his decision.
Very exam-based: 85% of your grade is based solely on exams; 20% lowest, 30% highest, and 35% final. I don't understand why he disables the grading system on Canvas. The final are questions written by all MATH 126 professors so make sure the practice exams that you are using to study have those professors listed or you'll see some random question.
Really nice and sweet guy! Spent most of lectures going over practice problems and expected you to review the online prerecorded lectures before class which did add quite a bit of workload. Pretty good at explaining concepts and and overall great lecturer.
Extremely test heavy and curved really harsh, I've had many classmates drop it because of one mediocre midterm.
Genuinely one of, if not the most, active and accessible professors at UW. He answers questions the second they are posted to Ed. He has a great sense of humor. Course itself is easy if you put in the work. Loved his additional lecture on dots and boxes. Would definitely take again!
