There's a lot of reading involved, every night. He explains the readings in class which helps. He encourages participation, but just because he wants you to understand the material. He's hip.
Hart is awesome! He is snarky, funny,ts to the point. He keeps lectures interactive & interesting. Test are all free response, four questions but if you read the required material and attend lecture, it is not hard! U have a few things ur graded by, which is nice. He gives pop quizzes & never gives out study guides. All lectures posted on canvas
Good teacher. Funny. A lot of reading. 3 tests, fairly easy. Pop quizzes, i'd say one or two a month. Overall a good teacher. Somehow I ended with a C, but id say the class average is a B.
Hart makes the subject interesting. He engages us and respects our opinions. There is no textbook, just readings on Canvas. There is a paper at the end of the semester and one for the final exam, but they are both easy. As long as you have some vague idea of what sociology is. Would definitely take again.
Literally a true king. I loved his class so much. He's hilarious and such a genuine person. There are sometimes pop quizzes, and a lot of outside class readings but they're all very interesting. Take home final. Attendance isn't mandatory and he puts the powerpoint online so if you skip a lot its not a big deal at all. But I really enjoyed going!
Cool guy, interesting lectures. 3 Exams- all kinda hard and short answer. This an easy B-, C+ class if you class and if you work you can get an A. Attendence not mandatory but it helps to go. Hart is pretty arrogant and highly politically charged, so if you don't like that, look elsewhere. Interesting material, but I'll be glad to be done with it
he vast majority of your grade will be determined by his tests, but they're not hard really, just pay attention to the lectures and his analysis of the readings and you'll do fine. The tests are all 4 short answer questions. There are 2 short papers but they're pretty easy. Solid choice of professor.
Dr. Hart is a great person. His lectures are interesting and if you pay attention well enough, the exams are very easy. Read the articles and you'll get an A on everything.
he is so funny and nice and tries to make every class great! when the powerpoint slides are over you can leave so usually get out early. there are readings each week online but aren't long, discussion boards which are completion grades and they boost grades a lot. a few tests which are short but you explain yourself in it. pop quizzes happen!!!
The tests are difficult and all 4 short answer questions. Discussion posts are graded on whether you did them or not. A lot of pop quizzes, and he doesn't really update grades until the end of the semester. Although he isn't an impossible grader, actually easier than expected.
If you attend 90%< of the lectures (which you should because they're always interesting) and do the occasional readings (especially the ones he mentions directly in lecture) both the exams and pop quizzes are easy. Overall he's very opinionated, but also very endearing and he wants you to succeed. Great teacher for stories and videos. Take course!
The absolute best professor Ive had in college so far by a mile. He introduces himself at the beginning of the course and tells you his office is always open and he genuinely means it. He truly wants the best for his students, understands that life gets in the way sometimes and is passionate about the subject. Hilarious, interesting, inquisitive
Im not sure if i have the wrong professor here but professor hart is awful. He posted a pop quiz on a Friday night and then got mad at the class when less than half completed it. Lectures are all over the place and absolutely no course schedule, you just do things after hes posted them, but he doesnt tell you before he posts something...
Prof Hart was so challenging and unhelpful. Multiple quizzes were just posted online on Fridays and he never said a word about them and then got pissed when people didn't do it. His lectures are boring, he just reads off the slides, and I've learned nothing from this class.
Ahhh, Jonas. Jonas's lectures are all over the place, however he keeps you coming back. Professor Hart has an edge to him that is enticing. He assigns random assignments with barely any notification and gets mad if you do not complete it. However he usually opens them back up. Moral of the story, his office hours are where you will make your money.
literally one of the worst professors ever. so pretentious and takes up so much time during class rambling on and on about nothing relevant. gets mad when you don't do the assignments yet never tells you anything ever in advance. so frustrating
Interesting class if you just pay attention. There are pop quizzes so make sure to stay on top of you're readings. Other than that he's a cool teacher that wants you to do well as long as you put in some effort.
He is so pretentious and condescending and his exams have ridiculous questions. I went into his office numerous times to try to improve and he mocked me, called me a nerd, and told me that this is college so I should expect more B's. It literally doesn't matter if you try or not- you'll get a B. Take the class but don't invest in it- not worth it
Funny professor. Has good lectures with interesting topics but his tests don't seem to cover information that we talked about. Can be a bit difficult to take notes seeing that he tends to go quite quickly through some slides.
Professor Hart is absolutely hilarious and makes the class fun for his students. Although attendance isnt mandatory, I highly encourage that you attend every class or you wont get the grades you want. Also Hart waits to the last minute to grade assignments, so be prepared for that.
He was an interesting professor with a good sense of humor. would recommend going to class because it really does help cover the readings because some of them are lengthy, hard to read, and don't make much sense. Overall the class really wasn't that bad.
I absolutely loved this class and recommended it to all of my friends. He lectures every class but fills them with videos and funny comments, so it doesn't really ever get boring. The reading is important to do, but he uploads them to Canvas so you won't have to buy a textbook. He's truly so funny you will learn so much you've never thought about.
Professor Hart is truly passionate about what he teaches. His class is very interesting and he tries to keep students engaged by showing videos and relevant things. However, his exams are pretty tough especially if you aren't analyzing the readings he encourages you to read.
He was a really good professor. I liked his lectures because he tries his best to keep things interesting. Do all of the work, because not many things are graded, so slip up once and your grade feels It. Tests are based on the readings and rarely anything he says in the lectures. Treats you like an adult not a teenager.
even though class isnt mandatory, show up bc he'll talk about most of the readings. i havent read a single one of the articles and im still passing bc i showed up and took good notes. hes really enthusiastic about teaching and is pretty interesting. do the discussions bc you never know how they will help your grade later.
Hart is hilarious and really cares about his students. You have to adjust to his personality but once you do its the best. He only grades a few quizzes, discussion boards (easy 100), and the tests so you have to do well on all of them to keep a good grade. At least skim the readings and understand how they relate to the lecture. take him!
By far my favorite professor of all time. He genuinely cares about his students and likes to joke around and poke fun. He definitely will make you work for an A, but his grades are based on content not length of essays and he gives good feedback. Accessible outside of class (follow him on twitter) and he understands circumstances can be hard.
Professor Hart is the best! Attendance is not mandatory but info is taken directly from lectures and put on tests. Readings are dense and can be tough to get through at times but are important for tests. 4 tests and final exams are the only grades but if you go to class and do the readings you'll be fine. Easy to meet with outside of class.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken. Pro Hart is very straight forward on what is needed to pass the class. Weekly quizzes on the lectures and readings. BE PREPARED TO READ!!!!! Watch the lectures and lecture youtube videos he puts in them.
Lectures are like deep talks at 3 AM about the meaning of life. There are readings, but I haven't done them. Exams are difficult but open note, so take notes on lectures and you'll be fine.
Professor Hart is the single best teacher I have ever had. I took this class last minute to fulfill a application requirement, and with no prior knowledge of sociology he created the most captivating and enjoyable class I have ever had. His way of speaking, not at you but with you, encourages you to think and really get involved. Love this class !
I LOVE Prof. Hart. His class was asynchronous so we never talked to each other, but the class criteria is straightforward with weekly lecture videos and quizzes along with 3 exams throughout. This is a really good Gen Ed to take because the material was interesting. If you do the readings and take notes during lectures you will be fine!
I am a sophomore and I came back to write this review because i felt obligated to help out the most amazing professor I have had at Jmu. He was hilarious well respected and genuinely wanted the best for students. I loved this class and did well without even taking notes because it was just so interesting that I memorized the content. A genuine guy
Professor Hart is a great professor. He is funny and cares a lot about his students! Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly recommend going, his classes are fun. We had weekly discussion responses about the readings but they weren't too bad. One group project at the end of the semester. Take this class you won't regret it!!!
His tests are not too bad, goes off topic though a bit. You look at the slides youll do fine.
Professor Hart is great and his class was definitely interesting, but I definitely would not recommend him if you aren't a sociology major. His class is extremely difficult for a gen ed, he gives long readings for each class, and he gives random graded assignments without telling you or sending an announcement. He's great but the class is too hard
He's a very fun professor, I took soci140 as a gen ed and thought the class was interesting. Lots of reading off of slides and I was usually unsure what to take notes on. Tests weren't too hard. There are a lot of short readings, being honest I didn't read a single one and still have a B in the class. If you go to class you should be fine.
He is a good teacher and he cares about your success. The readings are a bit hard. The tests are a bit hard. He posts the lecture slides and that is helpful. If you are a SOCI major, great class, if you are another major, it will be hard and seem useless, but it is somewhat interesting. Your choice.
Hart is a nice guy and you can tell he really cares about his job, but most of the time his lectures are super off-topic to what we are supposed to be learning about. His lectures are also really hard to take notes on because they're just huge paragraphs of useless info. He gives you homework that can help your grade and he doesn't do Friday class.
This class is one of my favorites as far as gen-eds go. I see a lot of people saying the tests are hard but they're really not if you pay attention to what he's saying in class. No Friday class, and he assigns long readings that you don't actually have to read, just know the summary/main points. Overall he's a super nice guy and I def recommend.
He assigns long readings, but literally discusses and sums them up in his lecture, which is all u need for exams. Attendance not required, but u should go to class because he shows a lot of videos and will ask questions about them on his tests. He has never given an assignment without telling us about it, not sure why so many people said that.
He is very funny and his class is interesting. BUT the tests can be a little confusing and hard sometimes. No classes on fridays tho:)
Prof Hart is one of my favorite freshman year professors! His lectures are interesting and engaging but only if you are really interested in sociology. His tests really aren't too bad, but there are a lot of readings. You can still pass if you don't read but make sure to pay attention in class.
Professor Hart is AMAZING. Attendance was not mandatory. He has 2 readings a week that are expected to be done prior to class. Occasionally gives a quiz on the material we cover. Exams are on readings and lectures, so do both. He is hilarious, and lectures are so engaging. Also cares a lot about his students.
Hart is a funny teacher and knows what he is talking about, but this class made me hate sociology. Every chance he gets he takes the smallest example and finds a way to put sociology into it. Like we get it everything is sociological. The class also has like 15-20 page readings due before every class. Very challenging for 100 level course.
He is a very comical Professor. The material is hard if you are not a SOCI major. I would take again.
I really like Jonas, hes relatable and actually funny. He's the most down to earth professor and is fun to talk to. Take him whenever you can. Has weekly assignments and quizzes but are SO easy. Show up and do the readings and you'll pass. Always willing to clarify his lectures becasue they can be confusing. Go to office hours and get to know him.
I absolutely loved this class! Hart is an amazing professor he is understanding and his lectures are engaging where I was excited to go to class. Some of the readings are tough but he breaks down the material really well so everyone can understand it. His tests and quizzes are pretty straight foward and if you come to class you'll do well!
Fine option for a gen-ed. He was lowkey intimidating, though. Tests could be confusing, but everything else was very manageable.
Super interesting class with great lectures. He really tries to open up your mind to many different perspectives in life. Definitely would take again!
Professor Hart is super nice and funny and his lectures can be entertaining. A lot of reading, but I did fine without reading, some questions on the quizzes will be based on the readings. Easy A if you pay attention in class and go over his PowerPoints. Easy grader too.
He was a funny teacher and honestly he makes this class fun. He finds a way to make learning fun. I would take him if you get the chance. we have open-note exams and he all in all is just so chill
He's pretty cool. Great lecturer, talks about interesting ideas, and you will learn a lot if you are even somewhat interested in soci. Definitely one of the better gen eds I've taken. Cares about his students deep down. The only problem I have is that sometimes his questions on quizzes aren't related to the class lol.
Prof Hart is amazing. If you get the chance to take any class with him (especially soci322) do it. He is passionate about the material but also flexible and wants to hear from the students. This was probably my favorite class at JMU.
Loved Prof Hart. Lectures are entertaining and plays tons of funny videos. Tests are online and open note. Fully enjoyed going to this class
This class makes me want to switch to sociology major. All the tests/quizzes were take at home. They were pretty straight forward for the most part. His lectures are a lot of words but he does the best he can to make it make sense in real world examples that mind boggles you. He is a very good and educated professor. It is a lot of reading though.
Professor Hart is an amazing lecturer, BUT don't get me started on his quizzes and tests. He asks the most out-of-pocket, random, and has nothing to do with sociology questions EVER. Not on google, not in lectures, not on Canvas. You just have to guess and pray. Other than that his lectures are entertaining and interesting.
LOVE PROF HART!!! He makes all the topics so easy to understand and I love going to his lectures. They are so interesting. There are a few quizzes and exams, but all super easy and open note. He posts the lecture slides on canvas as well. There is a paper at the end of the semester, but that isn't too bad. I strongly suggest taking him
Amazing professor, absolutely hilarious and great lectures. His lecture slides are massive paragraphs, though. You would have to be completely not trying in order to fail the quizzes/exams. All open note and the answers are easy to find. He uses funny everyday examples to illustrate the points he makes about sociology and how it works. 10/10
Professor Hart is an amazing man. He makes lectures enjoyable and applies concepts to outside life, making it more fun for students. There are not a lot of assignments, just a few discussion posts and a few quizzes here and there.
Professor Hart was amazing. Loved him. He made class interesting and related the topics of the class to real life. I took him for gen ed. Totally worth it. Made me consider a sociology major. The readings can be heavy, however they are really useful and interesting to listen to. There was open conversation and engagement.
Professor Hart is genuinely a really nice guy and it's obvious that he cares about his students. His tests and quizzes are online and open note and all the answers can be found in the readings he assigns and his slides. You'll get an A if you make sure to do all the assignments but he sometimes has them due at weird times so just don't forget
Professor Hart is a great teacher. He is very passionate about sociology, and his lectures are interesting. There is some reading, but all quizzes are open note. Tests are online and open note. Attendance isn't mandatory and lectures are posted. Great option for Cluster 5. Take him.
Attendance is not mandatory but would definitely suggest going cause they are entertaining and he shows a lot of videos that have 1 or 2 questions on the tests. Few quizzes, 3 tests that were open note, and discussion boards that are short and you dont have to respond to others. Professor Hart is amazing and I definitely suggest him!!
Professor Hart was amazing. I genuinely enjoyed his lecture, and always learned something new. HIGHLY recommend
Professor Hart was an amazing professor. I LOVED his class, so interesting and I always learned something new. Missing a few classes won't put you behind but make sure to do the reading because there will be questions about it on the tests and quizzes
He is just a good guy who can make the class interesting and funny.
Loved listening and going to class for the lectures he made them very interesting. However, it can be test-heavy so study for the tests because they make up a lot of your grade.
Great professor, but however I will say that there is a fair amount of. Reading, but you don't have to go to this class. If you do go, the lectures are fun and exciting. As well as, he does sometimes let class out early if he's an option for sociology take him. Just make sure you keep you with the class and you'll do fine.
Prof. Hart's class is the reason I became a sociology major. So good. Attendance is not mandatory, but the lectures are worth going to. Assignments are discussion boards (easy, just check canvas to see when they're due), small quizzes, and final project. Our project was to create a meme about the class. He's super nice and sarcastic. 10/10.
All of his tests are online but don't think you can cheat on them it's just not really possible with the way that the questions are worded. He'll give quizzes on something that was discussed in class and whether you're sick or not doesn't really matter. He's super accommodating and will open assignments if u need to get bumped. Decent professor.
10/10 the best professor I've had at JMU thus far all of his lectures are super engaging and fun. He often plays videos like Key and Peele videos and relates them to the topics. All the quizzes exams and discussion boards are online and super easy. If you want a free A with basically no effort and fun lectures then take him.
Deadass the easiest class youll ever take no cap.
Hart's lectures were always interesting and funny. He's good at encouraging participation and doesn't force it in your face. The notes are always posted and the grade basically just consists of a couple online tests, quizzes, and discussion board. easy grader.
Honestly a really good class to take if you need a low maintenance credit. Professor Hart is passionate about what he talks about which makes him convincing. Pretty much every class is just him talking but it's not as boring as it sounds. Assignments are pretty easy and exams are online too.
Hart is an amazing professor. My bad grade came from my not taking the class seriously enough. As long as you stay on top of quizzes and tests you should be fine.
This class was so incredibly easy but also so interesting. Professor Hart is such a nice guy and is so passionate about what he teaches. He loves to hear from students and really tries to learn everyone's names. He's also super understanding to anything you may have going on outside of school. Definitely take any of his classes if you can.
Extremely easy course. Attendance isn't mandatory but his lectures are funny. Graded on three exams and a few quizzes that are all online. Not much homework, just a few discussion posts. The final project is making a meme about the course.
Hart is a great professor if you're a difficult major looking for a relatively easy gen ed. I honestly never went to lecture once the entire semester and still have a high grade. It is one assignment a week, if that, and they're always super easy and take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Super easy credit, super respectful professor.
TAKE HIM. His lectures are so engaging and helpful. He is super understanding of students and their lives, so attendance isn't required, but if you go you will definitely be engaged and be glad you went. Overall, take him.
Best professor I have taken at JMU yet. He is such an awesome person and had very fun, engaging and interesting lectures. This will be your easiest class of the semester by far the course work is super easy and also engaging as well. The final is literally to create a meme about the class. Could not recommend this dude enough, take him!
Hart is a nice guy. Lectures were interesting at times, but also boring other times. He randomly assigned discussion posts but they weren't bad. Exams and quizzes were take home and the final exam is a meme we had to make ourselves. Attendance is not required, but he appreciates those who go to class. Easy gened/soci minor class to take!
Professor Hart was one of the best professors I had! There was no mandatory attendance, but most of what was on the quizzes and exams came from the lectures. The lectures were a lot of fun and we talked about many interesting things. I enjoyed the class and would take it again as a gened.
TAKE HIM if you need an easy gen-ed. Didn't go to class once after the first week, but seemed like a very passionate and amazing lecturer if you are interested in sociology! Grade consists of super easy discussion posts, 4 at home/open note tests, and the final is to make a meme. Ended with a high A. Super nice guy!
He was a pretty chill guy. Had discussion posts that weren't bad at all and had take home quizzes/tests. Attendance isn't mandatory but he prefers if you come. Lectures are engaging but can get boring at times. Final exam is a meme we had to create. Good gen-ed to take!
super easy. There's a discussion every week. Don't forget to do it; all tests are taken home, and there is no lockdown. only went on the first day of school and did well. Jonas Hart is the goat, definitely take this class.
Super chill & funny professor who doesn't give a very heavy workload at all. Exams and quizzes are easy as long as you pay attention, lectures are interesting and I learned a lot so I recommend showing up even though it isn't required.
Professor Hart is a really nice guy! Attendance isn't mandatory but he makes it aware that you should go. The quizzes are online, take-home with weekly discussion posts. The lectures are super interesting and he always connects the lecture topic to information things happening today! I highly recommend.
Prof. Hart is an awesome guy! He is very passionate about sociology, and teaching it in a very fun way. All quizzes and 3 exams are online and from the lectures and readings. Attendance is not mandatory, but go; its a really fun class. The final is also creating a meme that connects to class material! 100/100 recommend.
Professor Hart is alright. The class itself is ridiculously easy so if you need easy credit take him, but responding to his questions in class will likely end with you getting repeatedly called out or embarrassed by him if your answer isn't exactly what he's looking for. Stopped raising my hand to avoid feeling bad about my answers by the midterm.
I picked Professor Hart for the easiest GenEd and stayed for the interesting material. This class became a favorite and I always left lectures feeling that I got something out of it (even if that "something" was simply entertainment). 3 take home exams, all open book, and easy weekly discussion posts. Take it and go to lectures!
This class is easy and the lectures are entertaining. The things i'd complain about is he talks about politics which makes things uncomfortable, he gets really passionate. He also talks smack about the people that don't go to class even though he doesn't make attendance mandatory. It's a easy class so just take it if you don't care about that.
The class was easy—just a few discussions, a meme assignment, and three take-home exams. I never did the readings and still did fine. However, I didn't enjoy Hart's teaching style. He often opened class with political opinions and seemed defensive about sociology being a real science, occasionally putting down STEM fields to make his point.
I never went to class and I'm ending with a decent grade. Discussion questions every week, take home tests, and a few quizzes through the semester. The classes I did go to were super entertaining, prof hart is a great lecturer.
This class consisted of discussion posts, a few quizzes, a few exams, and a final project. Everything was take home, and I found this class to be enjoyable. My only complaint is that the tests and quizzes were posted at random, with only about 24 hours to complete, so make sure you're checking Canvas. Overall, great professor, take him if you can.
Overall the class is easy. Nice guy but he gets EXTREMELY political which I found super annoying. He's a great lecturer though when he is actually talking about Sociology. You create a meme worth 20% of your grade that is an overall easy assignment. Tests take home open note. Overall a super easy and good choice for this gen ed cluster.
I love him he was my favorite professor this semester! He had engaging content in his lectures and they are really well put together. We watched a lot of funny videos that actually did aide to learning. He is super knowledgable about sociology and I learned so much. All exams and quizzes are online and open book. Definitely take this class.
He's genuinely such a great and caring professor. He puts a lot of passion in his lectures, and even if attendance isn't required, you learn a lot from them. Mainly just tests (take home) and multiple discussion posts. He is an amazing professor who really wants his students to learn about sociology.
Professor Hart is amazing. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he made rolling out of bed for a 9:35 class worth my time. All readings are posted as PDFs online, and all tests are open note and open book. Despite being dense academic literature, the readings are genuinely interesting. Take his class, you won't regret it.
Great professor! Attendance is not mandatory and everything is posted online. There are discussion posts almost weekly and a few quizzes. The tests are pretty easy and directly from the slides. The final project is super easy, creating a meme based off of something you have learned in class. Definitely recommend and is an easy A for a gen ed!
He is an amazing professor and cares about his students well being and honestly his class is very hard to fail, considering everything is posted online. He is very passionate about sociology and will get you thinking more into your everyday life, However, to do good on the exams make sure you read the readings or you'll do bad. few assignments
One of the easiest classes you'll take if you need a gen ed credit. Super minimal effort required to get a good grade. Readings are important for the quizzes. Questions on the quiz are correlated to lecture material which can get specific. His lectures are pretty politically charged which he passionately talks about. Take with that what you will
The GOAT. Take this class.
LOVED this class. He cares so deeply about soci, JMU, and his students. His lectures are entertaining (fun videos, memes, etc) and he's very passionate.Interesting concepts.Tests are open note, final project is to make a meme, DO THE DISCUSSION POSTS. Attendance is optional but he gets sad when nobody comes. Talk to him after class he's really chill.
For showing up to a grand total of 2 classes this past semester, I finished with an A-. All of his tests/quizzes are take home and open note, all of this information is found scattered throughout Canvas. Don't forget to do the weekly discussion threads, they will boost your grade by a few crucial points. Hart is a good professor.
