THERE IS NO WRITING IN THIS COURSE! Very nice, fun, and caring. The fairy tales we read are very enjoyable, but the long theory readings are rough. If you don't understand something, prof will definitely clear it up in lecture, or in the open-ended Q&A recitation. 20% Lecture Participation, 20% Rec Participation, 20% Test 1, 20% Test 2, 20% Test 3.
Easy grading scheme, weekly readings are fine, recitation readings are usually longer and the discussion is kind of annoying bc zoom sucks. Its not an easy A and def requires more work than I anticipated bc I just wanted an easy lit gen Ed but its definitely still a solid option bc theres no writing
I like Russian Fairy tales. If you're looking for an easy A, this is the class to take. The lectures aren't long and the topics are fairly interesting. Only thing to watch out for is Prof. Auxier talks fast, so it might be hard to keep up with him while taking notes.
Amazing and friendly, very available and willing to help. Clearly extremely passionate about topics. Fairy tales are very fun and interesting, but the literature readings are somewhat difficult at times. Recitations don't require too much work, and you have to ask questions/make comments in the recitations to get credit. Overall great class.
Very friendly and clearly passionate about what he teaches. This class did have a lot of reading, but nothing too overwhelming. Most of the time his lectures summarized the main points of readings, and his exams were never terribly difficult either.
Amazing professor with interesting lectures. He had clear expectations and grading policies. Even during the pandemic, he genuinely cared about his students' well-being. Definitely extremely knowledgable and passionate about the material. Took this class as an easy A and loved it. I would highly recommend his class!
He was my favorite professor during covid. He made lectures super engaging even though they were asynchronous and turned a class I thought was just going to be an easy A into a class I found myself looking forward to learn about every week. If you are taking Russian Fairy Tales you should 100% take professor Auxier.
a very pleasant person and nice class. he really cares about the material but you never really interact with him. unless you reach out, most of the interactions are with your recitation instructor, so there's a little bit of disconnect. subject matter is cool but some of the units stray from it and it's a little weird
Completely awesome professor, cannot stress that enough. Took this class because it was the only thing that fit into my schedule and Im so glad. The material was very interesting, he made the class really fun. Easy to reach out to and understanding. Weekly reading required and movies sometimes too. Very passionate about his work, would take again.
Professor Auxier was amazing. RFT was online this semester due to covid but he made the lectures very fun and engaging. He responded to every email I sent outside of class very quickly and you can tell that he truly is invested in giving you a good response. RFT is not an easy gen-ed anymore, but professor Auxier made it worth my while.
Terrible for online. If you have it in person, probably a lot better. Tests are not based on the readings at all. It's all based on the lectures. I don't know why the readings are even there. He doesn't really do anything besides post videos.
This class is not interesting at all. A lot of reading, most boring recitations and difficult exams. He said that exams will be open book, but after the first exam he told us not to go away from the browser, otherwise he is going to give us zero on exams. He doesnt give enough time for the exams.
Just a bad professor. Yeah he may be a writer but seems to know nothing about fairy tales outside of his PowerPoint. You ask him questions and he doesnt respond or gives a strange answer. I feel he doesnt care about the student. Exams are unreasonable and my recitation teacher is terrible
"Earning more than 100% of something is nonsensical" - Professor Auxier. That makes absolutely no sense, the extra credit is there to boost other stuff if you earn more than 100%. The exams are unreasonable and are on random things and not the fairy tales itself. 50 minutes for 40 questions and each question is 5 points. Don't bother with this.
I took this class as a gen ed and worst decision ever. Everyone says its an easy A yet Ive showed up to every lecture took thorough notes, participate in the recitation, and do all the readings. I have studied more for this class than my Chem and Calc classes combined and its not paying off. DONT take RFT as a gen ed. You will regret it.
Im not sure what all these negative reviews about Professor Auxier are about. If you watch the lectures and attend recitation, you will be perfectly fine. It is so obvious how much he loves his job and what he teaches, which I find inspirational. His class is really fun and if you just read all the material you will be great. 3 tests. No final.
This class is a joke. DO NOT RESPOND EMAILS. TA gives horrible feedback, and lowkey despite you if you argue for grades. Pretty disrespectful sometimes. They think it's your fault cuz you didn't try hard enough.
I liked this class in the beginning, but later on professor doesnt respond emails and gives useless and strange feedbacks. My TA doesnt know technology, so recitation is just boring and awful. She is also is a harsh and picky grader. Dont try to negotiate for grades on this class, cuz theyd make you look dumb.
Russian fairy tales is a ridiculous class that makes me feel like I wasted my money. The professor does not care about students at all and his lectures are very disorganized and unengaging. Passive aggressive emails
I think that Professor Auxier takes his class very seriously, and I do want to acknowledge that it's extremely hard to handle a huge class like ours. Also, he is not a passive aggressive guy if you ever talk to him during his OH, he seems pretty chill and reasonable to me. this class is challenging but you will pass if you study proactively.
Dont take the class. Auxier makes the class impossible. At the end of them he thanked us for making it through the class and the sem. If im being honest this class is the sole reason for all my stress spring sem . Auxier doesnt believe in extra credit because earning more than 100% is nonsensical? Isnt that what extra credit is for? 2 words- GEN ED
Overall the class wasnt terrible but it is definitely not an easy A. You only get grade releases after each exam and have no chance to make up for or change any grades once they are out. I made the mistake of thinking this would be an easy gen ed and ended up failing the first, nearly impossible test. This is the class I do the most work for.
Most negative reviews for Auxier here are completely ridiculous. The course was not easy, but it was not impossible like people make it out to be. Literally watching the lectures and doing the max 20 page readings is all it takes to pass. I'm guessing half the negative reviews are from freshman who don't get that college actually requires effort.
this is not an easy a class. Don't expect to receive a good grade with little effort. He is responsible and accessible person, very passionate about what he teaches. This is just not a good choice for social gen ed
Took this class for a gen ed. Little did I know that he would not meet on zoom at any point in the semester and then grade lecture attendance on FIREFOX. (watched several weeks on chrome and got 0's). Have fun studying for exams b/c lectures are deleted in less than one week. Told us mean exam score was 85 but canvas said 75.. interesting
Professor Auxier made it very clear the first day of class that if you put in the work, you will get the grade you want. To be honest, that is true. My only issue is that the exams were timed for 50ish minutes with 40 questions, so I always found myself struggling for time. Outside of that Professor Auxier is very passionate about this class.
The only thing that I really dislikes was that it was asynchronous. The test question could be kinda tricky and specific, but if you studied for it and did the readings it was an easy A.
He is a good lecturer and keeps you engaged. As long as you watch the lectures, the tests are easy enough.. There is a lot of reading and you kinda have to do it because he assigns discussion boards and grades your participation in the class discussion during recitations.
Prof. Auxier was great. His lectures were entertaining and he kept you engaged throughout the course. The grading criteria for the class is very clear as well - I appreciated how organized everything was. I would definitely recommend taking him for some gen eds.
I did not enjoy this professor. Lectures were very sparse with information, often filled with individual stories. We were tested on things not discussed with very difficult exams. Avoid this class.
Avoid at all costs. Tests are way too complex for an intro course. Way too much required of this elective. Spend your time elsewhere
If you want to devote all your time to an elective, this is your class. Russian fairy tales is a ton of work and takes up most of your free time. It is NOT an easy A. Avoid this class and this professor.
Professor Auxier was very nice, and overall understanding. Not sure if this Russian Fairytales would be different in person, but it was fairly easy. There was three major tests and all you had to do was watch lectures, pay attention in class, and read the fairytales. I would recommend this class if you are looking to boost your GPA
Had Prof. Auxier for Russian Fairy Tales. Genuinely nice guy, really passionate about course material, and is pretty funny. Recitation readings can be dense but if you go to class/watch lectures it's really manageable. Three tests total, again, not that hard if you pay attention, and the rest of the work is pretty light. Good guy, good gen ed.
Auxier is literally God. This man obviously cares so much about what he is teaching and makes the class really interesting. Very easy way to get a Literature requirement as readings are for the most part short and simple. Highly recommend taking this course, you won't regret it!
Prof. Auxier is super nice and always willing to help students. His lectures are engaging, and he's always open to suggestions for the course. I had online asynchronous quizzes and they were easy. No cumulative final. Read the stories, take notes in class and you'll get an A.
Prof Auxier is a really genuine guy who loves what he teaches. There is definitely a lot of reading, but as long as you read everything and take notes during the lectures the tests are pretty easy. The class is really interesting, and his lectures are actually quite entertaining. He does go really fast, but as long as you can keep up it's great!
Professor Auxier's exams are unfairly impossible. He expects you to have as much knowledge as he does and the test questions are extremely niche. He's a great lecturer and very knowledgable but he has a skewed sense of people's interest in his class. Topics also spanned more than russian fairytales. Would not take again.
this guy really needs to wake up, lose his ego, and realize that nobody cares about russian fairy tales. absurd how specific the questions get and soon you start realizing you are in a history class instead of literature. attendance counts. stupid topic and stupid class, not an easy A anymore unfortunately, doable but unreasonable.
Prof. Auxier is a solid professor. Lots of reading for lecture and recitation. Simple attendance quizzes based on readings for each lecture (there is a buffer if you miss some). 3 exams based on each unit, no final, each 40 multiple choice questions, online, and timed (50 minutes). More reading than the average gen ed, but I recommend his class.
This class is an easy A, as long as you show up to class, take a few notes, and do the assigned readings. Reading is relatively light but required. He gives easy 4 question attendance/reading quizzes at the start of each class . Test are online on your own time and straight forward. He's also a very engaging lecturer and makes the class interesting
Russian fairytales with Prof. Auxier is a great class to take for a gen ed. Lectures are engaging as long as you pay attention and take good notes. There is a lot of reading, but it doesn't take all that long to do. Exams are more difficult and questions are sometimes too specific, but the exams are on Canvas which makes it more manageable.
Lots of reading. Literally have a reading for every single class whether it be lecture or recitation. You don't really have to go to the lectures, but it is helpful at times. Attendance quizzes everyday though, but you can miss a few and ur lowest ones get dropped. Test are all online so thats super nice but finishing them is a time crunch.
I originally thought this would be a class that I would be able to study for and do well. although I do decent its not the best. Lectures are interesting most of the time. Wouldn't take if you're looking for an easy A. A lot of reading and class turns into a history class eventually where we ended up learning Russian History not stories
This class was easy. There was a decent amount of reading but it was all pretty easy to comprehend. Lecture and recitation attendance is mandatory but I found the lectures interesting and engaging so I didn't really mind.
The class starts as a literature class and then turns into a history class halfway through. His lectures are very engaging, though. The exams are on Canvas, but they are very detailed and specific so it is hard to finish them in time. Overall, it was a good gen-ed course, but a little harder than I thought it was going to be.
I scheduled "Russian Fairy Tales" figuring it would be an easy A and a joke of a gen ed. I was actually surprised! Prof. Auxier is well prepared and excited to teach, and it makes the course material really intriguing. You can't slack off, though, as keeping up with the reading and the exam questions can be somewhat challenging.
Professor Auxier made Russian Fairy Tales really enjoyable and a great gen ed. Lecture and recitation attendance was mandatory, but recitation gave many extra credit opportunities for participation and there were drops for missed lecture quizzes. Exams were super easy take home tests as long as you take notes on lecture and do the readings.
Everyone who tells you Russian Fairy Tales is easy is low key a liar. You have to put in a lot of work to make sure you understand the readings so make sure you go to the lectures. If you miss recitation you're kind of screwed too. Put in the work and you'll have an A, but don't let people tell you it is a cake walk by any means.
Very basic gen ed class, it is very easy to get a good grade if you do the readings and attend class. There is usually an attendance quiz every lecture based on the readings but they are quick and easy. He is overall a good teacher who is very organized and is very passionate about what he teaches.
Basic gen-ed. Exams were a little harder than necessary but all were given online. You have to participate in recitation for a grade which is frustrating. There are quizzes on the reading and lecture in every lecture but they are easy if you do the assigned reading.
RFT is a pretty standard gen-ed. It's heavier on reading than the average. 3 online tests, two in-class reading quizzes per week, and participation in recitations. If you make an effort to understand the material, it's not hard to do well. Auxier gives extra-cred if questions were unclear on exams. More focused on theory/history than expected imo.
RFT is fairly easy gen ed compared to others, but not as easy as many think. Lot of reading and quite frankly if you don't read the fairytales you won't do good. However, taking lecture notes and going to recitation should give you an A. His exams can be tricky but he gives a ton of extra credit and makes it fair. Overall, would certainly take.
RFT is a fun gen-ed! The course entails a lot of reading, easy attendance quizzes, fair exams (usually curved), and manditory participation in recitation. Prof Auxier's lectures cover a lot of material but manage to keep you awake. Just be prepared for the course's focus on fairy tales to shift after the first exam to psychology/Russian history.
The content of this course is very fun so even though it's a lot of reading (like short stories just a lot of them) it's a fun read. At the beginning of the lecture, there was always a quiz asking about the reading and about something he says in the lecture so you have to attend. Four tests throughout the semester and no cumulative exam at the end.
Whoever said this was an easy class is an ugly liar. This class is literally the reason I want to drop out. The professor is nice but DO NOT take recitation with british lady, she will RUIN your happiness and most especially your GPA! She once said that suicide was selfish and that shows A LOT about her. Do not take this class, honestly save urself
The material is very lecture heavy so if you don't attend or get notes, there is no other way to know the material. The online exams on your own time were beneficial along with the automatic extra credit with each exam. One thing to note is that Auxier is not the most accessible, he admitted in class that he deletes his inbox monthly. Easy A.
Very upfront in his expectations for the class. There's quite a bit of reading & lec. check-ins for attendance (lowest 4 drop). He sticks to a B+ exam/grade avg, & gave A LOT of bonus points that boosted my grade. Recitation is based on participation, contribute to the discussion & get a 20/20 for each. No final. Overall, a great gen. ed choice!
RFT is one of those classes you think would be really easy but its actually an insane amount of reading before EACH class and recitation. I hate reading but its completely doable. Theres attendance quizzes each class about the reading you were assigned. Jonathan is an extremely nice guy and knows a lot about what he teaches! 3 units so 3 tests.
Overall a very good professor, very passionate about RFT so lectures weren't boring. There was a LOT of reading you had to do before class, and a quiz during each lecture to take attendance and make sure you did the reading. Very generous with bonus points for exams (thank you prof). IMO the class was not easy, and took up a lot of my time
Such a great prof! Would be very easy for the material to be drab, but Auxier is super funny and engaging and pulls from his life experiences during lecture. Not the easiest A, but at least a straightforward one - do the readings and study a bit for exams and you'll be fine. Very fair policies, good GenEd course to ease into college-level work.
Would never recommend this prof. Exam questions are purposely tricky! His lectures are insufficient in helping you do well. Avoid at all cost. Condescending to students.
Good Professor! No final and only three exams through the class! Exams are pretty hard but you should be good if you study!
Recitation is required, and participation is mandatory for full points. Lecture has attendance quizzes to check if you're reading the assigned work. Passionate but speaks really fast but posts lectures. Barely uses the book, so pirate it. Exams were online but much harder than expected. Don't take just for a gen ed requirement.
He's a good professor: very organized, clear grading requirements and uploads everything on canvas. The recitations for this class are what are really annoying. The exams also get really specific at times so make sure to make a study guide or something!
lectures were fascinating, i learned so much about a ton of different topics. prof was super engaging during class, funny, knowledgeable, insightful, and socially conscious. i really liked him. material was interesting too, i found readings to be manageable. exams were multiple choice and very easy.
He is a good guy who does care about his students. I thought the lectures were entertaining. I cant really see how anyone could say anything bad about him personally. The tests were kinda difficult though
He is a very nice professor who cares a lot about students. There are readings for each lecture and recitation. Every lecture there is a lecture quiz based on the readings. slides are very informative. grade is made up of quizzes, recitation participation, and exams. exams are hard but manageable(virtual) an easy gen-ed that requires little effort
Easy class for a gen ed. 4 question quiz online in every lecture that is easy if you do the short readings. Posts lecture notes with almost everything you'll need for exams. Exams were online and easy if you went to recitation and did readings. Recitation graded on participation, I had Auxier for rec and just had to speak once for full credit.
i found this class useless and a waste of my time. way too much work for a gen ed. anywhere from 20-80 pages of reading REQUIRED 3 times a week before every lecture. exams were way too specific and too difficult. auxier was passionate about the material but I didn't find it enjoyable. stories didn't make sense. only take if ur genuinely interested.
There is a lot of reading for this class and the online exams were harder than expected. Professor Auxier is very passionate about the material and offers a Zoom link so you can attend class when you're sick and still get attendance credit. I do think he wants you to succeed but exam questions are still pretty specific and can be tricky.
Proff Auxier is very enthusiastic and makes lectures enjoyable. Overall easy class. Made up of 3 midterms and a recitation that is mandatory. There is a quiz during each class that you have to be in class to get the code to take it, but very manageable if you read the assigned short stories or even skim them.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. He is a menace to society. He make the exams way too specific and the readings take up too much time. You will be doing more work than your other core classes. I had two friends that dropped out and I wish I did too. He expects you to remember his readings from two months ago.
I enjoyed this class up to the first exam because it was actually based on fairytales but after that point it was more of history class which was not fun. Exam got progressively more difficult. Not the best class but also not the worst for a gen ed.
Honestly, I enjoyed this class and ended with an A+. The tests were hard and specific, but online--so take them with a group of people and use notes and you will be fine. He randomly added 30 bonus points to our grade at the end of the semester which was so generous. He's a really nice guy who is passionate and interesting!
He's very enthusiastic during lecture and I learned a lot. A lot of the class is focused more on Russian History than actual fairy tales. The book we have to buy was only used a few times in the beginning of the semester. Participation is required during recitation and is very hard to get full points every time. Overall, interesting class.
This class is focused heavily on Russian history rather than the fairy tales. Lectures were interesting enough and offered on Zoom. Make sure you take this class with friends!! Tests were way more difficult than expected for a GenEd, but still manageable.
took auxier for russian fairy tales and it was the easiest gen ed and i recommend it to anyone. plenty of readings and attendance quizzes on them but exams were remote
EMPHASIS ON GET READY TO READ! Class was 3 times a week and we had loooong readings we had to complete before each one-- way too much for a gen ed IMO. I have much harder classes and should not have to focus this much energy on this type of class. Exams are so specific and tough. Recitations are try-hard af, but totally manageable.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy gen ED, but it ended up being more work than my major classes. It also was heavy on Russian history. The exams I do not believe accurately reflected the material covered in class. Also recitations were very participation based and if you do not like to fight for points, I would not recommend
Great for a gen ed credit. Frequent readings for quizzes but you'll be fine if you just skim. Virtual exams, no final. Its a bit more history based than assumed but I found it interesting. Don't take this for an easy A, but A's are extremely attainable if you just show up and ask questions in recitation.
A lot more history than i expected and the exams are really long. All my friends got a B this semester, so definitely not an easy A.
Exams were harder than I expected (especially 3rd exam) and class was very history and reading heavy. Exams were virtual, no final, attendance quizzes every class. Participation matters in required recitation. Definitely not the easiest gen-ed, but manageable.
This class was ridiculously hard, and even two years later, it is still the lowest grade I have ever gotten at Pitt. Unnecessarily hard for a Gen Ed, especially the tests, which went beyond the readings/what he discussed in lecture.
All exams are virtual and take-home, so made it easier and less stressful. Able to write down lecture notes ahead of class, and reading assignments weren't necessary for exams. Thought that everything went well on last exam, but was the only one out of my friends who got an A. Thought it would be an easier gen ed, but definitely requires work.
Prof Auxier was extremely nice and entertaining. The classes were always fun and interesting and the recitations were easy to participate in. The only issue was the exams were very hard and did not necessarily accurately reflect what we discussed in class. There was a lot of readings but they were not bad and they were easy to get through.
I took RFT as my lit elective. I found this course not only interesting, but an easy class compared to my major classes. It's a lot of reading but if you do the bare minimum and skim you'll be fine. The people complaining just wanted an elective where you don't have to try AT ALL. This class still took some time but was overall easy.
Take RUSS 0090 with Jonathan Auxier you will not regret it.
NOT an easy A don't let them fool you. You have to make lengthy contributions twice every recitation and attendance is mandatory. Also, there are at least 3 readings to be done per class and attendance quizzes on them. Jonathan was fine and accessible but if you are a stem major with an otherwise heavy workload the class itself is not worth it.
He's an okay professor I just hated everything about this class. Literally, avoid this gen ed, pls pick anything else. Exams are way beyond what he explains in lectures and participation is required in recitations. Attendance is also required because he assigns a quiz every lecture. And I could not stand my recitation teacher omfg.
Lectures were interesting and engaging. Attendance quizzes and graded participation recitations. Readings for the quizzes and recitations. 3 unit exams that were challenging. Took this to be a blowoff gen-ed, was surprised that it was not extremely easy.
I highly recommend RFT but it's not the easy A that people say it is. Johnathan makes the lectures super interesting, but beware of the exams. They are take-home and online, but they are deceptively difficult. There are often minute details that Johnathan says aloud, but aren't on the slides that are included. He curves and adds extra points!
A LOT OF READING IS NOT AN EASY A. That being said, he's a great lecturer. Exams are tough because they pick super specific details from random readings. The thing that made the class kinda hard, though, was the Recitation TAs. They grade harshly, so try to get him for your recitation if possible since it's for participation!
I took this class for my children's literature certificate, and if you enjoy fiction writing I recommend it. You write the first 24 pages of a young adult novel and go through a series of workshops. Each week you read about 20 pages of other student's work and discuss in class. Not an easy A but worth it if you like to write.
RUSS0090 with Professor Auxier is an engaging yet challenging course. Lectures are great, but the exams can be tricky - focus on details in readings. unstuck study helped me prepare effectively. Overall, a rewarding experience if you put in the work.
Probably one of the most disrespectful professors I have met at Pitt. His lectures were mediocre and I felt I took little away from the course.
