He is awesome!! He is so helpful and really does want to see you succeed. Homework is easy and he gives take home quizzes. Take him!!
Exams are very short (8 questions) and fill-in-the-blank. You have to know your stuff or else you'll fail the exams. I would not recommend this professor in the mornings, as he tends to have a droning voice that puts you to sleep. The quizzes are take-home though, so there's that, and he is very helpful if you go to his office hours.
He is one of the top professors teaching Cal 2 at UTSA. Not too challenging and very clear. However, he does have a very monotone and boring voice, but he's committed to teaching you and working with you.
i promise you will not regret . the best professor ever
Great teacher. Took his class during the summer. Very clear on grading and lectures. Helpful with questions and tutoring. Tests graded with partial credit. Go to class, do the homework, study for the quizzes/tests. Effort = Grade. Would love to take another of his classes.
He's a master of a well paced class and gives great opportunities for you to earn extra credit. Tests and reviews are clear, and he will take the time to explain everything you need to know. Wry humor keeps class interesting. Excellent Calc teacher.
Professor Brucks is a pretty easy professor. Homework is online and you have as many retries as you want. Also they are due within a week when they are assigned. Tests are so easy but he assigns activities and QL assignments that can get pretty hard. Take him though he's an easy professor
Awesome professor! He really cares about your education. He will help you in any way possible. He is pretty funny also. Highly recommend.
Excellent professor. Work directly translates into a higher grade. If you show up to class every day, you will get a good grade. He really enjoys math. His grading style is very fair. I took him for Calculus 1 and I wish he was teaching Calculus 2 next semester.
Best teacher I've had at UTSA. He is so passionate about what he does and he is more than willing to help anyone who asks for it. His reviews are a huge help. If you can, TAKE THIS TEACHER! He's awesome!
He is really helpful , this class is super easy, i just took for cap, its an easy A but hes great, BEST UTSA PROFF I HAD
Mr. Brucks is not only passionate but equally talented in teaching mathematics. Very patient and understanding. Mr. Brucks also adapts to the students in his class. After learning what works with particular students he will place special emphasis on his approach to ensuring everyone is reached. It would be hard to find a better professor...
Great Professor! Great instruction, very helpful and understanding. Tests are a little bit hard but he gives you a review with the exact same questions, just different numbers of course. Those numbers are freaking hard though. I have an A, and it's thanks to him.
Awesome lecturer, but has monotone voice. I am horrible at Calculus, and the reason I have an A is due to him. Test reviews and quiz review the actual testquiz. Do your homework, it helps ALOT! I wish he was teaching MAT1224 next semester.
Great teacher all around and his noteslectures are amazing. You must go to his class. The homework is easy but a must do, and the reviewtest questions are a select few questions he takes from the book; he'll tell you which problems to study in the review so you can be prepared for the test. Very funny. He is open to giving feedback on your tests.
Prof. Brucks is simply put the best math prof at UTSA, period. Gives great lectures that explain the topics extremely well. Homework can be difficult, but he gives extra credit if you do it over the weekend. Gives sample tests and quizzes, but test are hard if you don't study; gives partial credit. Pro tip: go to the lab hour, helps so much!
He is such a great professor and helps you with anything and everything! Hes a chill guy. Some of the material is hard but hey, that's college for ya.
JB is a masterful lecturer that loves his job. He allows graphing calculators. He provides samples and reviews for exams and quizzes. He is always willing to answer questions and is responsive to email. During a quiz you can discuss questions with classmates. He provides the means for success, however you must put in the effort. Expect hard tests.
I am not very strong at math but after attending Mr Brucks for Calculus 1, I have a new found appreciation for it and would liked to have taken him for Calculus II. Scheduling didn't allow for it. Amazing lectures, very relaxed and passionate about math. Quizzes are collaboratory, exams are not. Study hard, take good notes, attend the optional lab.
Professor Brucks was amazing! His lectures are easy to understand and the way he writes explanations on the board along with his lectures makes taking notes easy. If you have a question on your math homework he will help you with it as well as present the same problem to the class. Gives extra credit as well!
Linear Algebra is a chill class but you need to read and know math terms in this class!! The homework is simple because I took him also for cal I but make sure you know your formulas and equations in the sophomore level class. I took this for engineer replacement and alot of theory
Don't take him. Says he helps students but the most he has done is give HALF a point for course eval. He lectured us on how he works 2 jobs to provide for his family and to remember when we do evals that he has a 3 year old child. Hw is due 3 times a week which leaves minimal time to study for his open ended test questions with no formula sheet.
I really enjoyed his class. He was thorough when explaining not only HOW to use calculus, but also WHY it is useful. I came into this class with no knowledge of calculus and I'm coming out feeling I have a strong grasp in it. Except to work for your grade, but if you put in the time and effort, a solid grade should be no problem.
Do your self a favor and take him for Calculus!!! He is amazing. By far the best professor I've had at UTSA. Lectures are easy to understand and makes taking notes easy. Do your homework and go to class and it should not be hard to make a good grade. He is also very understanding and lenient as long as you email him or talk to him after class.
I am so glad that I got to take him. His lectures are very thorough and easy to follow that you will easily grasp the concepts that he teaches. I definitely recommend this guy.
Professor Brucks is a nice guy and his lectures are good. Since calc 2 is a hard class so it isn't an easy A but its possible to get an A if you work hard and get good grades. He will help you in his office hours if you need any help and replies back really quickly.
Calc 2 is a tough class, but Professor Brucks is great, very clear and overall a great guy. Makes class really interesting and answers e-mails promptly. Whenever you need help, he will give it to you if you ask him. You'll have to work for your grades, but he is the best Calc 2 teacher!
By far the best math professor i have ever had! He explains the material extremely well and is very good about answering questions in class. His tests are a bit on the difficult side but he gives great practice tests beforehand that are super helpful.
Calculus 2 is tough, especially over an 8 week summer course. BUT! Professor Brucks is extremely knowledgeable and easy to follow along with. Lectures may get boring but if you want any chance at passing go to class and do your homework right after the lecture. Extra credit is offered and projects are total grade savers.
Professor Brucks did a wonderful job of explaining Calc 1. He's easy to follow and provides reviews before his exams (except the final). His projects are difficult but don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
If you're not polished in your math skills or haven't taken Algebra since junior year of HS(like me), this is not the teacher for you. This professor will expect you to know all the basics of algebra off the top of your head and WILL NOT go over them with you. Lots of self-teaching. He goes super fast but is willing to answer questions AFTER class.
If you listen, you'll get it. The class was easy for me. Just make sure you remember the math leading up to calculus.
Terrific course, amazing instructor! Lectures are engaging, passionate & he has a great way of explaining concepts to tie it all together. Read the chapters like he says! It's essential to fully understand the material. It's a lot of work: reading, hw 3x/wk, & written work but was still my favorite class by far. I wish he taught more UD classes.
Professor Brucks is a good teacher he TRIES to explain as much as possible, however the homework assigned sometimes is nothing like what was covered in lecture. There is homework and quizzes due every week. Class is easy if you somewhat understand math, but there is a lot of self-teaching involved with the PIVOT program.
Professor Brucks is the GOAT. He is so flipping awesome!! He gives you so many chances to succeed, so there should be no possible reason that you should get anything less than a B. Go to class, then immediately do the homework after. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK ON TIME!!! The little percentages of grades add up real quick, that's why I could've gotten an A
Brucks is a terrific professor, he is very insightful and will always provide wonderful feedback. There is a lot of HW in the PIVOT program but each assignment is unlimited in attempts as well as quizzes so there is no reason no to ace these sections. Attendance is mandatory but that shouldn't be an issue as they feel like a live crash course video
Math matters is the worst program I have ever been under. The teacher expects you to teach yourself. I had to learn everything from the tutors in the math lab.
Avoid Math Matters and Mr. Brucks if at all possible. I have completed 85+ hours in the labs trying to learn the information in his course due to his lack of teaching. Cheating is rampant, and they do nothing to curb it. Instead I get told, they plan on fixing it next semester. He spends more time checking homework than teaching. Avoid!
While I appreciated the idea of the Math Matters Program, I felt that it included lots of unnecessary work. If I hadn't remembered what I learned in high school I would not have done well. You have to basically teach yourself. Classes are super boring, I usually take naps in class since attendance is mandatory. You have to work a lot in this class.
Do not take this course unless you are completely fine with teaching yourself all the needed information in this class. There are two parts to the exam, both of which are ridiculous and unnecessary. Brucks does not teach, he just lectures and gives out assignments. If you have the option to take any other class I strongly recommend you do.
Really caring and nice guy. Lectures were really boring and didn't help at all. You learn everything through the lots of homework and quizzes he gives. He made the class easy and gives lots of extra credit. He really sets you up to succeed. There's no reason why anyone should fail this class. He's a good and easy professor, just boring.
He's a good guy and cares about your success but honestly the way the class is run is terrible. Lecture is only on Monday and the rest you're basically on your own. The notes are very useful and teaches you things but the homework and exams don't look anything like what you did for homework. Thats why this whole process is INEFFECTIVE.
The math matters program is just flawed. it's definitely a teach yourself class and there is a ton of unnecessary out of class work.
the math matters program was three things: tedious flawed and annoying. THERE IS SOOO MUCH HOMEWORK, i remember spending hours on the homework and then having to spend more hours on the quiz. its very time consuming and the way they run the program is extremely messed up. you will spend so much time on this class for a good grade. I clickers too
Professor Brucks made himself available outside of class to discuss any difficulties within the classroom. He also gives you back your test so you can see what you did wrong and how to fix it. The Math Matters program has great tutors available but most of this class is self-learning. Homework and quizzes are time consuming so beware about that.
If you cant teach yourself you will not pass, period. I would spend hours everyday trying to teach myself the math and I just couldnt do it. The math lab helped a little on homework and quizzes but not test, which were extremely different. Im not paying all this money to completely teach myself.
Professor Brucks is a very good professor, however he is very boring when speaking. He's grading policy is AMAZING, you can retake all of your exams if you do poorly on them. You do need to keep up with all your homework and quizzes and all of your class participation notes and class meeting notes.
I took professor Brucks Fall of 2019 and spent a lot of time in the math lab each week. Attendance is mandatory and is taken by IClicker each class. He responded to my emails within a few hours. You can take retake each exam you take, there are 3 and then the final. Make an appt. with him if you are struggling, he really cares about our success.
He spent like 20 mins in the beginning of every class answering questions. His lectures were easy to follow. There's a lot of extra work and components to this class. Just use all your resources and study!! He will help you if you're struggling. Math Lab was my best friend for this class. Stay on top of your work, it is easy to fall behind.
Mr. Brucks is one of the best Math teachers I have ever had hands down. He knows how to break down the math and explain it really well. The lectures are great hes very active in the chat with everyone and hes also very active in our group me so hes always there to help us out.
Definitely the best math professor there is. Hes very active in the group me & always answering students questions during our meeting times. unlimited attempts on hw & quizzes so you can always get a 100. Professor brucks is amazing and really cares for his students, I wish I could take him for business calculus.
If you need your Math for Business credit, him or Carolyn Luna are the ones you should take. They both have the same assignments and provide plenty of sessions throughout the week. You have many chances to retake your exams (I retook six exams this semester, and it bumped my grade from an 85 to a 91)
For Fall 2020, Brucks' class was all online. We needed to show up for 2 hours of class time for the whole week. There were so many opportunities to show up to his class times. There were notes, class examples, and homework every week, and at the end of each week there was a quiz. All in all Brucks was super helpful and understanding.
I had Professor Brucks my first semester in college, right when the whole pandemic started, he made his class very understanding and easy to follow. He was very helpful & would remind us when the tutors were available if extra help was needed. Gives chances to retake quizzes & hw! Would take him again if I could, sadly he wasn't available for calc.
Professor Brucks is the best. He is very good at teaching. He is there always to help and answer emails at any time. Caring. VERY COOL.
Professor Brucks is the best! Very organized and he made math SO easy to understand. Yes there's a lot of homework but it's needed to practice the material and prepare for exams. You did bad on an exam? No problem, you can take it again. There is a class GroupMe were Professor and Tutors are always available. Bonus: He's hilarious! Take his class!
he is the best, him and professor Luna work together on this course so take whichever one is available. So many resources to help with the homework, and he is super funny. you get retakes on every test, and at the end of the semester all units are opened back up for you to raise your grade. 100/10 recommend. it is hard to do bad in this class
Brucks is an overall good professor. He knows how to teach and can relate with his students. Also gives multiple attempts to take tests and at the end of each half semester he lets you do any missing assignments. But I really hate how he didn't grade two of my missing assignments before final grades were due so I got a B instead of an A.
Listen.. I am terrible at math and managed to get an A+. Now I truly believe it's not the student, but the teacher that makes a difference. Professor Brucks was an amazing teacher, he was very active in the class Group me and offers many resources if you're having trouble with the content. Also, no final exam, just a chance to retry an previous one
Professor Brucks is one of the most caring and considerate people out there. He allows many opportunities to make up exams and has a virtual tutoring lab with people who WILL help you. TAKE HIM
BEST professor Ive ever had. Hes caring of his students and will do anything to help you pass the course. He gives multiple chances, even on his tests. His lectures are clear and makes sure he goes over everyones questions. Always quick to respond emails and is very helpful.
He's super funny, and he's always very active on the group me.
Prof Brucks is great. Math is hard regardless but he is very helpful with his lectures. Weekly vocab and homeworks, along with 3 exams that he gives full credit retries which are GREAT. If you can take him, DO IT!
Easy class
Show up to class, participate, and apply yourself. He is a great instructor who wants to help. He is always available as long as you reach out.
The only negative thing I have to say about Professor Brucks is how detailed he is. All exams had an opportunity to retake them at least once and were all pretty self-explanatory as long as you pay attention in class. He explains everything clearly and shows you how your notes should be. There are plenty of assignments which makes it easy to pass.
I had close to 30 ungraded assignments at one point in this class. Midterms grades were completely out of date and he won't respond about the lack of updates. He is unclear about attendance, saying in class that it's mandatory, and in the syllabus/online that it isn't. He also says he will record lectures but never uploads them.
If you have the opportunity to take professor Brucks I highly recommend it. He is the most understanding professor ever and really cares about his students learning math the correct way. his lectures are great and he uses great programs for quizzes and tests. Best math professor here at UTSA. Highly recommend.
Lots of busywork, but great practice.
This professor was great. Every week you had homework, notes, and try it examples to turn in. You did have two group projects and with that you made a portfolio. The benchmarks were opened at weird times and closed at 9am the next day. Only three exams in total. I would take this professor again. He explained everything clearly, and does help you.
Great Professor, although a lot of work/time needs to be put into this class just like any other class you need. Would recommend taking him! Weekly homework, notes and examples due as well as 3 total tests in the semester. Also, we did have two group projects throughout the semester so make sure you choose people that actually want to do the work.
Professor Brucks was a great professor! He truly cared about all of his students and even though I am awful at math, his lectures helped. The class is very homework heavy and the tests can be stressful but I was always pleasantly surprised with my grade when I thought I did poorly. Do your work and your will get a good grade.
Professor Brucks is hands down the best math instructor I have ever had. For years now I was dreading to take calculus, though professor Brucks made me realIze there was nothing to worry about. He cares so much about how his students understand the material so as long as you ask questions you will walk out the class with an A!
He is a great professor. He uploads videos so that way you can understand the content outside of class. Just as long as you do the homework you should be fine in this class. Textbooks are also free too.
Amazing professor!! I struggle with math but he explains the material clearly and I was able to get an A+ in calculus. I would take him again for any math course. He was also caring and accessible outside of the classroom if you needed any help with the material. Would highly recommend taking him.
Best math teacher I've ever had! His lectures are entertaining and he keeps you engaged. Breaks down some complex topics into easily digestible material. The homework and lectures prepare you well for tests and he gives you all the support you could possibly need. I'll definitely be taking him again for calc next semester!
He is a really good professor! He does examples of problems during class and he goes at a slow pace which I really liked about. Tests were annoying at times but the due dates were the same due dates throughout the semester, he gives you plenty assignments to maintain a good grade , and he wants you to pass. I recommend.
Professor Brucks was one of the best professors I've had at UTSA so far. He is always willing to work with you and help. Attendance isn't required but you should go because that is where new topics are introduced. Make sure you do the homework and you will be fine. Tests are pretty rough sometimes but it is all what you cover in class.
His exams confuse me because theres 3 parts (2- 1 hr, long 1- 20 mins long). You need to go to class to take notes because you will submit them for a grade. He talks A LOT in a monotone voice. he LOVES calculus, he gets a little too excited... anyways he explains the material okay but goes fast sometimes.
Though math is not my strongest subject. Professor Brucks made math as simple as possible, so information was very easy to retain. Though the homework and tests may be a bit lengthy, they are manageable. While this course might have been a bit challenging, having a good Professor like Professor Brucks helped a lot.
Brucks loves his job which was my saving grace for Business Calc. Im not a math whiz but he made it enjoyable. Attendance wasnt mandatory but idk how you'd pass without going
I took Professor Brucks years ago and he still remains my favorite professor. I'm not strong suited in math but his lectures were easy to follow and he was always cracking a good joke. I tend to have a lot of confidence issues and he would notice them and lift me up. The exams are tough but won't drag your grade down as bad as other math courses.
He's pretty chill. His lectures are very slow but helpful. Attending class is required, but definitely worth it. If you can I would recommend this professor. He will walk you through the problems and will answer any questions you have. It makes class slow, but at least you understand the material.
Great! Will take attendance the first few weeks of class then after that he will stop. (I've taken algebra and calculus with him & he's done this both times.) Lots of grades, so if you get one bad grade it won't hit your grade that bad. Tests are multiple choice, but only 10-14 questions, so little to no room for error. He's not too bad!
Out of all of the business calculus professors, Brucks is the best. He takes lectures slow and is a little monotone, but explains material very well. Homework is very lengthy and the tests are in person. If you struggle, make sure to utilize the student tutoring services!! They are very helpful. Do not fall behind in learning the material.
He was overall a good professor. Only thing I did not really appreciate is the lack of emailing back with questions (online course). If it wasn't for that, he'd be perfect.
Concepts are hard but the prof is good. The questions on the hw are harder than his in-class ex. HW is worth more than exams so complete them and always submit hw uploads, you're graded on submission. Easy A/B if you put in the work and do this, I realized too late and ended with a C. Textbook help provided by the prof. GO TO CLASS/ STUDY GROUPS!!!
As bad as I am with mathematics, Professor Brucks is great. If I had to take another math course, I'd take his class. Class work consists of 11 homework assignments on webwork, 11 written work uploads (from webwork assignments), 10 quizzes (Modules 1-10), 3 exams, 1 final to retake any parts of the 3 exams.
Genuinely a great Professor, would recommend taking him! Weekly homework, notes and examples due a day apart from eachother as well as There are two group projects, which are pretty easy even if you do them alone. There are three total tests during the semester.
Definitely one of the better professors here at UTSA, his teaching honestly made the course easier and the lectures actually made me feel like I was learning. I enjoyed the hand holding type of learning.
One of the best (pre)calculus professors you can take here. He was very understanding, always helping with homework assignments and taking the time to answer questions thoroughly. He made it really easy to follow along when doing notes and offers so many extra points for exams.
Professor Brucks is easily the best professor I've had so far. He's incredibly helpful and respectful. He encourages participation during class even if you don't know the answer. He may also give extra credit to the students who show that they actually want to learn the material. (Those who stay in class to review even if class was dismissed early)
His teaching style is honestly pretty good. The lecture examples are a lot simpler than the homeworks and exams but the extra credit really helps a lot. He's also super willing to give extra credit on the writing assignments if you ask him to correct your work.
Math is not one of my strong suits but I ended up acing the class with a 103%. I never read the textbook once, I didn't feel like I needed too. Prof. Brucks uses it a lot in his lectures though, which is great. The class is pretty straight forward - you have on average about 2 HWs online per week. 3 Exams + 1 Final. Watch Organic Chem. Tutor!
He is very good his lecture are easier than the homework he assigns but the math gym helps out a great deal. I ended the class with a 113 and it was easy to maintain. He offers test reviews that add bonus points to the exam, test corrections, and will answer questions the class time before your exams. Exams were usually free response.
Bruck's made Calc 1 feel less intimidating. He not only gives good in-person lectures but he also uploads his notes as well as live videos. I found his teaching style to be straight forward, with some topics needing further independent research outside of class. Overall great professor, understanding with attendance and approachable for questions.
Professor Brucks is an engaging instructor who makes the course material approachable. While the exams can be challenging, attending lectures and utilizing resources like Unstuck study are key to success. The workload is manageable, and the professor is always willing to provide extra support.
Cal 1 with Professor Brucks has been my favorite class this semester, I enjoy the energy, pace and level communication of the class. Professor Brucks is an excellent student advocate, making sure students feel that they are heard and is generous with his time after class and shows genuine interest in student questions.
Prof Brucks was a great math professor, Calculus is not easy, so it's very important to dedicate time to study. He posted his lecture videos and gave 10 points if you complete the review for each exam. He replaces you lowest grade with the final so make sure to prepare for that. Attendance is not mandatory but I really recommend you to go!
A prime example of what a good professor is. Take this class, and you'll understand the material quickly; your grade will be triple digits all semester, and you'll wish you booked his Calc 2 class before everyone else.
I love math and this class was alright. Easy to understand and the professor did cover everything. He is available outside of class and would help you if you need it. His lectures are slow though and don't get through much. He provides good explanation though for those who don't understand.
