Very easy course, 20% of final grade offered in extra credit. Tends to digress during lectures, but makes up for it with his sense of humor and excitement about the subject.
Awesome teacher. Really easy to understand. Hybrid class. Hilarious guy. Makes it fun to be in class. Lots of examples to help us understand the concepts.
Awesome teacher. Very helpful, outgoing. Makes the class interesting. Easy A if you do your work. No exams. Discussion and paper based.
Awesome teacher!y won't regret taking him. . He is very sweet and helpful and also not a hard grader. Class is discussion and paper based
Great Teacher ! 5 short papers 5 online discussions 1 Mid term and 1 final that's all. Class is very interesting. Attendance was not required but, I still went because I loved the class. Easy class Very FUN and simple. He is very straight forward about his assignments and responds to emails fast. He is always there to help !
Such an awesome teacher.
Amazing all around teacher. Even with the lack of effort in the students attendance and putting effort - he still would put 100% into his lectures on making fun and interesting. If you need a philosophy class, this is the teacher you'd like.
Jonathan was the best professor that I've had at CSUS. He makes the class so interesting and he took every measure possible to make sure that students understood the material. I got a A+ in his class with no problem. You NEED to take his class, you will actually enjoy philosophy!
Jonathan was the best professor that I've had thus far. He puts in so much effort to make sure that students understand the material. His style of teach combined with his humor makes the class very enjoyable. I received an A+ in the class no problem. I highly recommend his class.
This was a hybrid class, so meeting only once a week there was a lot of content. He cut a lot of the material out though, to be able to cover some more confusing topics, but overall it was quite easy. He's quirky in a cute way, while keeping you interested and laughing. I would take him again, definitely!
I have Professor Chen at 7:30AM! It is difficult to wake up for class, but he makes class so interesting and funny. He uses gifs for his slideshows which makes the lectures even more exciting. His quizzes and paper are fairly easy. I recommend taking his class!
Jonathan was one of the greatest professors I've had this far. He makes it incredibly interesting and helps tell you why your thoughts are the way they are.
Easy A class. 20 quizzes, 4 online discussions, 2 essays. Everything is done and submitted online. He is a pretty cool guy and a bit funny. He looks more like a college student than a professor. Class was slightly dull and people started to not show up anymore halfway through the semester. He doesn't take attendance so have fun. Easy. #HonestRater
Great professor, great class. Very interesting class and he is so enthusiastic and excited about what he teaches. Fun class to go to, he's an easy grader. Very helpful. TAKE HIS CLASS!
I was surprised at how young he was but he's so passionate about humanity & philosophy. This class was at 7:30 AM but I came in everyday because his teachings and readings were very enlightening. Act like a college student and show up to class! He takes the effort to know your name. Don't be intimidated if you don't know anything about philosophy.
Great teacher. Is clear on everything you have to do which isn't really much. Overall easy class.
His class was good! Easy class overall and enjoyable. He doesn't take attendance, but it helps a lot to go to class. If you go to class, you won't even to really read the book or chapters.
He's a great professor. Love his stories; makes you want to understand the material. Doesn't mean you should slack!
Professor Chen is amazing! I'm not very interested in philosophy, but he made the class interesting and fun. He actually gets to know his students names and keeps them interested by bringing in stories and humor to his lectures. I really hope I can take another one of his classes before I leave Sac State!
He is an amazing professor! I absolutely loved going to his class. He always has stories and has a good sense of humor. Keep up with readings, and ask questions. He is a very open, genuine professor! He always made the conversations interesting and fun and really drew you into the topics he was discussing.
I really enjoyed this class. He lets you call him Jon and he's really young and cool. You should probably go to the lectures because he really helps you understand the readings better. He puts you into groups at the beginning of the semester and you take several group quizzes. There's also two 3-4 page papers, but he's a really easy grader.
Honestly, even though his class was at 7:30 in the morning, I still got up to go because of how cool of a teacher he was. Just read the book, go to class and actually listen into the lectures. If not, do the study guide to help you with your quizzes, they're wordy but you should pass.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Jon. He is an amazing professor. His lectures are very entertaining and you just have to love him. There are 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. If you study you can pass.
Professor Chen is amazing! You will love his class. He goes above and beyond for his students and helps as much as he can. Pay attention, go to class and you will get an A in the class. I had him for a 3 hour class but I was able to pay attention and stay engaged! You wont' regret taking him. Also if you have any questions email him he'll help!
This guy is an amazing teacher and person. One of the most amazing thing about this guy is his ability to remember all his students name. His class is easy if you read and do the study guides. P.S. Your mom.
He's great! One of the classes that didn't stress me out this semester. The only thing that counts towards your grade are 4 quizzes, an online group discussion, one assignment, and a midterm and final. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you go to lectures, pay attention, and take notes then you don't even need to read. He covers everything! Fav!
Professor Chen is such a caring professor. If you email him with some questions he will literally email you a whole page back. He is always available for questions and he truly cares about his students, he tries to remember every name he can! I was in a 6-8:50 pm class and he would stay until 10-11 talking to his students. He just wants you to try!
The class is an easy A. However, get ready to read the chapters in the book because that is where the quizzes, midterm and final comes from. He gives you study guides before every quiz or a test which helps a lot. He cares about his students and is always prepared to help, so take the advantage and got his office hours for help if needed. GOO DLUCK
Jon is hands down the best professor I've ever had. I took phil 2 and phil 6 with him and both haven't been too bad. As long as you study his study guides and readgo to lecture you should be completely fine! Got an A in both
This guy is sick! Very clear and really energetic. Hes really funny and can relate to his students very well. Pay attention in class and take notes and you will pass the class no problem
Jonathan Chen is a super good teacher. He is there for his students ands wants them to pass. He is very relatable and easy to talk to. Lectures are long but he makes it fun and interesting. All in all, he was amazing and I would love to take his class again!
This was my favorite class of the semester!! He makes learning so easy and gives you a chance to do well in his class! Makes the lectures very interesting and always tries to clarify if you do not understand! Actually inspired me to CHANGE my major to philosophy that's how good he is!!
He is a great professor. I enjoyed going to class because he would make class very interesting. If I could take him again I most definitely would. He's always there if you need help. Quizzes are fair and are based on lectures and readings assigned. He is a fair grader and is willing to work with you to improve your grade. Definitely take him!
Jon is very understanding if you have any personal issues or complications. He lets you take group quizzes which help a lot. Also there's a paper worth 1/3 of your grade but he tries his best to make it easy to write up. If you ask for help he will be there for you. He tries his best to make a difficult subject easy and fun. Best Professor I've had
Jon's class was super fun and interesting, he asks for everyones opinion which makes the class participate even more. The tests were super easy if you did the study guide. Notes are optional but I recommend. If you participate it will make the class 10x easier.
Hmm, he was cute & a great professor. His lecture were never boring & kept the class laughing. Group quizzes, & individual quizzes. All quizzes are based on lecture. Have a midterm paper really easy to write. Overall great professor oh yes he likes to be call John not Professor Chen.
Great professor! He is really passionate towards philosophy.
He is an amazing professor! He cares about his students! Quizzes, midterm and final are based on notes, you can read the book (a little hard to) but it is easier to just show up than buy or rent the book. If you have questions about the study guides dont be shy to ask ( like 5 or less questions), he gives you hints and you'll pass! Fun class!
Had the best experience from taking this class. I would recommend the class and teacher to anyone I know. His lectures are very interesting (in my opinion), and takes students' opinions into consideration whether right or wrong. Great class, highly recommended.
Jon was one of the best professors I've ever had so far at Sac State! He is hilarious and really makes the class enjoyable. He does like to use groups, but it's not too bad because you can take your quizzes in groups. The midterm and final are essays, but he does his best to help make them easier if you ask for help. I highly recommend him :)
He is an awesome professor!
One of the best professors I've ever had! He actually makes his lectures interesting and cares about his students. I would definitely take his class again
Great professor. I would definitely take him again if I had to.
Jon's one of the best professors at CSUS. I'd suggest to learn the inside and outs of the study guides and you'll easily pass the quizzes/tests. Fortunately this means that it's not imperative to attend class since all you have to do is learn the study guide. However attending lectures will be incredibly helpful towards completing the study guides.
Jon is a great professor! He makes the subject interesting and quite clear. There is a midterm and final, as well as some quizzes. Attending class is not mandatory, but most of the material on the quizzes derive specifically from the lectures. He also bumps up your quiz score if he felt it was too difficult. Definitely would take again.
Fall 2015. He does not care for attendance, his quizes are really easy. He gives you study guides before hand and bonus points if he feels as if the students didn't do so good as a whole. His lectures are so inspirational and funny. He is such a cool teacher and its nice to know that he's very understanding! He's the best teacher I have had so far!
5 quiz. 1 midterm. 1 final. 1 online group discussion response based on a reading of your choice. Curves quizzes. Easy A. Buy the textbook, you'll need it for your online group discussion assignment.
Philosophy can be confusing but he made it very interesting. It was a 7:30 am class for me, however, it was worth attending. You do have to attend as well to do well on the tests. I rarely read the assigned textbook, but got 85-95 each quiz. Sometimes I fell asleep in class too but if you manage to do the study guides, tests are easy!
Really enjoyed his class and was very interesting. His stories and explanations are worth listening to. had fun in the class and discussions were very engaging. his exams are multiple choice and surprisingly easy. Would recommend to anyone interested in taking a philosophy class. Attendance is not taken but why miss it.
would definitely recommend!! its not an easy A, but its definitely not a hard class at all
His class was very entertaining and helpful to understand the concepts from the book. Test are easy if you complete his study guides and he does curve them as well. He truly does care about his students and I would highly recommend his class.
Jon's the first professor I've ever taken twice and there's a reason for that. He genuinely cares for his students, he ensures everyone is able to understand the material, and his classes aren't overwhelmingly difficult. Jon is among the very best professors at CSUS and I hope he continues to teach. I highly recommend taking any of Jon's classes!
Jonathan is great professor. The readings are really tuff and you most likely will need to re-read them but he will go over the reading in lecture and he does a really good job at explaining everything. Their is only about 5 quizzes and one online discussion. Do the study guides for tests and you will pass with A's. Would take him again!
TAKE HIS CLASS! Prof. Chen teaches so ecstatically, you enjoy his lecture. I had Class from 7:30-8:45AM & I always looked forward to his lecture. This class focuses on readings, but you can get away w/o reading the text B/c he goes over the readings clearly and provides study guides! before tests/exams, There is also one written assignment as well.
Very interesting lectures. I didn't mind waking up at 5:30 am knowing my first class was his class. Very open to students, grades easy. Adds extra points to every quiz, midterm and final exam. Doesn't want his students to fail. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.
I attended all the classes and it was an easy A. Even if you don't want to attend, he posts all the lectures online so that you can look over them. It's worth going to the classes though, the prof is funny and enjoys talking about topic. Tests based on lectures. Heavy ec on some tests and online hw is so easy. Never opened textbook.100% recommend.
He gives you a PDF so you don't have to buy your book. There's quiz everyweek (gives you a study guide for it) and curves everything. Except for those random homework assignments which are easy anyway. I was SO happy I had him because his funny personality and his ppts keep you really engaged. YOU SHOULD TAKE HIM!!!
Jon is such a good professor, omg. I've never had a professor like him, he's super casual with his lectures, and they're really interesting. He's a really chill guy ((also really cute but I digress)). The readings were kinda interesting and his doodles are cute, take him!! You won't regret it! Ask him to speak Spanish bc he sounds hot
I was about to switch out of the class before school started but im honestly so glad i didn't! Jon does a great job at taking complex topics and making it easier for everyone to understand. He's really funny which is great because it makes you WANT to pay attention to what he's saying. Easy quizzes (group & individual) and 2 papers. Also hes cute!!
Professor Chen is a caring professor who truly cares about his students and their achievements. This class mostly consists of powerpoint lectures; however, he makes them entertaining. He is always available to answer questions, and he will take extra time during class to explain a difficult concepts. I highly recommend Professor Chen!
I really enjoyed my time in this class. Jon really cared about what everyone had to say and he was supportive. 10/10 would take this class again. He made my first semester of college enjoyable.
Great class; he's really funny and his lectures are super funny. He curves each quiz if there are a lot of people that do bad on it (and that's usually the case).
Very cool professor. Creative lectures everyday and he also puts them up on SacCt. I took a MWF class and there was a quiz every Friday but he always sent out study guides before hand. The last 9 weeks of the semester, I never went to that class on Mondays and never felt like I missed anything. Midterm and Final was online and her curved both.
By far one of my favorite professors. I had him at 8am but his class inspired me to get out of bed. He knew every single name of the 120 student class. If you go to class and listen to his lectures, quizzes will be easy he curves them and makes study guides. Super funny and passionate about what he is teaching. Sad that I don't have him again.
Jon Is A wonderful instructor and clearly demonstrates his passion for philosophy. He creates a learning environment that's and inclusive and laid back. Just wonderful!
Okay Professor Chen was the most amazing teacher. His classes were actually super interesting, he made the class fun, he always had funny stories to talk about, and he made you want to join in on the class discussions. If you have the chance to take him do it. I would do the readings before class just to help you interact in class but not needed.
He was one of the best professors ive ever had!! He is funny, kind of goofy, but extremely intelligent. He cares so much about his students and wants everyone to be successful in the class. 5 in class quizzes, 3 online discussions, and a final paper. Made a 730 am worth it! I never wanted to miss lecture because he is so much fun.
Jon is one of my favorite professor and he made class enjoyable. He really cares about his students and very enthusiastic about philosophy. I'm not into philosophy but he made it interesting and I've learned a lot and turned out I liked philosophy.
His lectures were like a stand up comedy show because he was like a silly kid. You can tell he actually takes his time to get to know his students. He took the time to know his students and even remembered our names. The quizzes were quite easy if you took the time to read and participate in class. I really recommend his class.
He is one of my favorite professors so far. He is very passionate about philosophy and wants every one to get a good grade. He constantly emails you and reminds you what is due , which was helpful. We only had 3 online discussions 5 really easy quizes and a final paper.
Jon is an amazing professor. Passionate about the subject, takes time to memorize every single one of his students names. He remembers the names of students from semesters ago! Must attend lecture and read the passages to do well on the quizzes. 5 quizzes, 3 discussions, 1 final paper. Easy A if you put in effort. he promptly responds to emails.
Honestly, one of the best proffesors ive ever had. He's really funny and makes his lectures fun (coming from someone who had his 8am class). He will hand out extra credit for basically anything. The textbook is online which you don't have to pay for. He makes it clear that "he's not here to fail you". 10/10 highly recommend lol
Professor Chen is amazing! Yea it was a 3 hr night class but you get so into it you don't even mind. He's passionate about what he teaches and is willing to help! Do the study guides and if you have a paper do it early cause he's quite meticulous and really edits it. plus he's close to our age and super funny.
Love, Love, Love Jon! Really good lecturer. Had him for 3hr night class and time flew by quick. Would end class early most of the time. 5 quizzes( provides study guide). No midterm or final. 1 paper due at the end and is super easy. Offers a lot of extra credit. Show up to class and take notes, and you'll pass with easy A.
I will chime in with all the other great reviews. Professor Chen is incredible! He will actually care about you and what you have to say in class. 5 (somewhat difficult) quizzes, 3 online discussions, 1 final paper. 99% of the questions on quizzes are taken straight from his lectures. Just come to class and pay attention!! Also he is hilarious!
5 quizzes, 3 online discussions, 1 final paper. Just show up to class, take notes, pay attention, and you will pass. Will send you emails throughout the week reminding you of upcoming due dates. Gives you the whole semester to write the final paper, but do not leave it until last minute. You'll see why if you do. Provides study guides for quizzes!!
Ok, so attendance is not mandatory, just at the end of the semester if you miss a class there are readings that are not in the book that you will miss. Each reading is important. Quizzes are not difficult if you complete the study guide and go over it a couple times. He has a final paper, have a prompt by latest of midterm week. The final paper is different than others, not hard but more time-consuming. Go to all the extra credit it helps you a lot! Read before class so you can participate or at least understand what he is talking about. Easy to talk to after class or even e-mail!
He's one of the coolest professors I've ever had! He's super funny and he seems to really enjoy what he teaches so he explains everything very well. He teaches mostly without powerpoints (sometimes he uses them). Attendance is not mandatory, but you have reading which you have to do and then discuss in class, so you will miss those if you don't com
The greatest professor I have taken. I really learned about philosophy with him. Take good notes since test and quizzes will be on them. 2 papers that are not bad as long as you pay attention to the material. I wish I had more classes that I need to take with him!
Recommend taking him. He's a super chill dude and really loves what he teaches. His stories are hilarious and it somehow always relates to what we're learning. TAKE HIM. DO IT.
Chen is one of my all time favorite professors and I wish he taught other courses so I could have him again. His lectures were hilarious and he usually gave them in the format of a story with little drawings (makes you remember). We had a final paper but it was pretty easy and about 4-5 quizzes that you can take in groups. Overall a great class!
He's a very funny caring guy. He jokes around a lot and really engages with the class. He gives five quizzes, which are fairly easy if you read and/or follow the study guide. You also do group quizzes which can give you extra points. No final just a 3 page paper due at the end of the semester.
He's the best professor ever. Approachable, funny, kind. He uses stories and pictures to make lectures fun n' engaging. Don't let him fool you though, he is a tough grader. Extra credit, 5 quizzes, 3 online discussions, and 1 final paper. You have the whole semester to work on the paper. Quizzes based on readings that you have to read before class.
I took Jon again because he's that great of a professor. Really cares for his students and shares some of his own stories. He gives readings to do before class and he explains them in class which is extremely helpful. Gives quizzes with a study guide; do study guide and you'll pass. These were group quizzes (5). Has a final paper. TAKE HIM!!!!
This professor is my favorite professor at Sac State so far. He is a gem. Phil 2 is one of the most interesting classes you will take and I highly recommend taking him and the class. He is the definition of an amazing teacher. He really cares about his students. As far as the class: 5 quizzes, no final/midterm, 1 paper, 3 online discussions.
This class in general was easy and he is a great teacher. Highly recommend. In this class: a lit review, 2 online discussions, interview paper, 2 exams (super easy), no final nor mid term. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. you will lose 15 points per day you miss.
The best professor I have had, and its not even close! Jon made the lectures so interesting that I never wanted to skip class. Of all the classes I have taken his Phil 2 class is the only one in which I never missed a lecture. Would highly recommend him! 5 easy quizzes and a Final paper that you have all semester to work on.
The class is pretty easy, attendance is not necessary, but if you dont go to class, make sure you read the book, there were 5 of 35 multiple choice quiz, and one 60 multiple choice final, and a 4 page/800 words-ish paper, the only homework is online posts, and comments, straight forward, not a stressful class at all.
Professor Chen was great. He made every lecture worth attending. Attendance was not mandatory, but the readings were necessary if you wanted to do good on the quizzes. No midterms. Final was a paper that you have the whole year to complete. Definitely would recommend him to anyone.
literally the best professor ever. I have taken him twice lol LOVE HIM!!!!!!! and hilarious
Before taking this class, I thought I wouldn't like this class. Professor Chen made his lectures very interesting and he is quite funny which made me enjoy his lectures. He really cares for his students. I would definitely take him again in the future!
I currently have Professor Chen as my professor. He is, hands down, the best professor I have ever had! He is so hilarious, caring, & super nice! I always look forward to his classes & lectures. He makes philosophy/ethics so interesting! I definitely have learned a lot & would definitely take a class with him, again. THIS MAN DESERVES A RAISE!!!!
He is an amazing prof! I currently have him now and he likes to crack jokes and makes the subject so interesting. He makes lectures easy to understand and doesn't give too much homework. If you're debating to take his class, just do it!!!
One of the best professor I have this semester. He cares about his students a lot. I really enjoyed his teaching. Even though I have his class for 1 hr 15min I still feel like it's a 50 min class. He replied to every of his email within 24hrs. He was such an amazing professor. I would definitely recommend him to every student.
3 discussion questions each worth 120 its each, 4 tests which he gives study guides for so if you study off those you can easily get an A on the tests, no final but there is a final paper which you turn in online. Attendance not mandatory but he doesn't use powerpoints so either get the notes from someone else or go to class.
This is my second time having him as a professor and I still enjoy his lectures! Philosophy can sometimes be hard to understand but he makes it easy. Hes funny and really cares about his students. 3 discussion posts, 4 quizzes and a final paper. His study guides really help. Highly recommend him!
He is by far my favorite teacher! He loves what he does and it shows through his class discussion. Attendance wasn't mandatory, you can get notes from a classmate and you will do fine. The quizzes/tests were simple, do the study guide ask him questions and you're good to go. Great professor, i highly recommend!:)
He requires a book for the class, however he covers all of the information in his lessons. As long as you listen /show up to class and take good notes the quizzes will be easy, there are about 4 quizzes and 1 final ethics paper. Theres also some online class discussions that aren't too bad. The class is interesting and he is a cool professor.
He is so funny and caring. He made his class so interesting and I learned a lot from him. He also gives good feedback and is always willing to help if you ask.
He is truly a great professor! Class is based off of 4 quizzes and 3 online discussions and then 1 final paper. If you put the time and go to class everyday and take good notes, you don't even have to read for the quizzes. Very kind, joyful person and literally helps you step by step on writing the final paper. Also offers extra credit:)
One of the best professors I've ever taken. His class is extremely engaging. He always tries to understand different viewpoints and make sense of it. The book was pretty interesting. 3 multiple choice tests which were easy because of the study guides. One final paper at the end which you have all semester to write/revise it.
Jonathan is the best professor. He truly cares about all his students and wants everyone to do well. I highly recommend taking him. He made philosophy sooo interesting for me and I think my fellow classmates can agree.
He's so chill and he makes philosophy NOT BORING. He is very caring for his students. His grading system and the workload we have is fair.
AWESOME TEACHER! quizes can be difficult , be sure to study. No homework. He makes ethics reallyyy fun. You can tell he loves what he does.
Jonathan is a really good professor!! He makes the class worth showing up to. He takes consideration of everyone's opinions and perspectives. There's 4 multiple choice quizzes and I advise you to study for them. There's one paper that you will be able to work on throughout the semester.
He's a really cool guy and makes the class fun. It was actually really interesting to learn. 11/10 would take again
Great teacher 10/10 don't hesitate to take. If you listen and put in the work you can at least get a B.
Professor Chen truly cares about his students. I took him a couple semesters ago, and I wish I could take him again. Material is very interesting and his lectures make it easy to understand. Gives great feedback on papers and tests were all easy as long as you study!
I loved this class! Jon is a great teacher and made so many confusing philosophies sound simple. I wouldn't say he's an easy A, but if you pay attention in class and take a little time to ensure your comprehension of the topics , you'll breeze through the course. He also always makes time for his students, so if you're stuck ask him for help!
I loved this class! Jon is a great teacher and made so many confusing philosophies sound simple.I wouldn't say he's an easy A exactly, but if you pay attention in class and take a little time to ensure your comprehension of the topics, you'll breeze through the course. He also always makes time for his students, so if you're stuck ask him for help!
Such a great professor! I'm so glad I got to take him during my first semester of college! The class consisted of three online discussions, four quizzes, and a final paper. He is super accessible outside of class (though I never went) and is such a sweet dude! Attendance are not mandatory but super worth it as he goes over the readings very well
Jon is a great professor, he inspired me to join the Philosophy major. He gives great feedback and awesome lectures which is what make his classes so "easy". He makes this class very interesting!
Professor Chen is awesome! I had him for intro to philosophy. He is totally cool and is so interesting to listen to. I literally wrote an essay about how good of an educator he is.
Funny prof. Easy to pass the class! Study guides are exactly like the tests. Do well on your class discussion and youll pass!
Jon was an amazing professor! He is very hilarious and really cares for his students. His class is pretty easy as long as you show and take notes. There is no homework. He also puts his powerpoints and study guides up online as well. He had 6 online quizzes and online midterm and online final. Absolutely love him, would love to take him again!
Professor Chen is an amazing instructor. He absolutely cares about you and your education. He's hilarious and very open to helping you. There are lecture quizzes, reading quizzes, discussion questions, and a final essay. You will need the book to pass the exams/quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures are very useful and needed to pass
Really good professor! Because it is philosophy though the material can be a little difficult, but Professor Chen does a great job interpreting the info!!
10/10 recommend. amazing professor. lectures are very thorough and will always make sure your questions are answered.
He's a fantastic professor! He makes each lecture so funny and he always takes time outside of class to communicate and help out students. He cares so much about his students and he makes sure if everyone understands each topic.
Jon was favorite professors He makes Philosophy not boring/ his lectures were enjoyable to attend. He tells personal anecdotes and is funny and hes really good at making time outside of class to help. Take good notes/pay attention in lectures it will make tests/ discussions (all online) easier
He is woke af 10/10 would take again. Overall a really great professor. The tests can be challenging. You have to work a bit to get an A. One of the few general education classes where I learned something meaningful.
Professor Chen is honestly such a great person and really makes time for his students. The material is on the harder side, at least for me it was, and really is an elective class that you have to put in work for a good grade. He really encourages class involvement. He makes his lectures and expectations very clear. Definitely recommend this class.
Professor Chen is very chill and funny! But its philosophy, which is extremely difficult to understand and just boring. There are lecture/reading quizzes which are pretty easy if you read and take good notes. You have class discussions that are very hard since its a 2 part assignment. And you have one essay.
He was such an amazing professor! He made learning Philosophy really fun and exciting! He's super personable and treats everyone like they're friends and makes an effort to remember everyone's names! I would love to take another one of his classes again!
This is my favorite professor at CSUS! He is highly educated in philosophy and makes his lectures extremely entertaining. I never wanted to miss his class as it was fairly enjoyable. Assignments consist of reading/lecture quizzes as well as a few discussion posts.
Jon is an AMAZING professor! He is super nice&funny! I am one who's not that into philosophy, so I thought this class would be boring, but Jon made lectures worth going to because he kept the class engaged. Class is based on weekly reading quizzes, lecture quizzes, 4 discussion posts, and a final paper. Assignments are simple and straightforward!
Prof Chen was one of my fav professors Ive taken here at Sac state! He really cares about his students & encourages us to come to his office hours for any questions or additional help. There are lecture quizzes every few weeks, 2 part discussions questions, reading quizzes & a final paper. He also offers lots of extra credit! Easy A if you try
Professor Chen is the best! During this pandemic, he has made class so enjoyable even though we're stuck at home. He is very thorough with his lectures and even adds illustrations he made or gifs, in relation to the topic(s), to make us smile. You will read a lot, but its very interesting and will help support your stance during group discussions.
Jon is literally such an amazing and caring professor. He is caring, kind, and hilarious. Quizzes and exams are online and open book..!! His replies to my emails were always helpful and he truly cares about his students. BEST LECTURES!!! SO funny and I never got bored reading them. Take him!! You won't regret.
Professor Chen is a very good professor and gives clear instructions. Since COVID, no meeting required but weekly reading quizzes and frequent lecture quizzes. First few months were difficult but the remaining few months are easy. Final is a philosophy paper regarding topics discussed in class. I would recommend for GE requirement.
One of THE most caring and engaging professors I've had so far. Enormous effort in his lectures AND quizzes; adding small details like gifs, memes, or jokes to make online class bearable. Quite a bit of reading, but the discussions are pretty though provoking. Several lecture quizzes and many reading quizzes (short), 4 discussions and a final paper
Very organized professor and made the course enjoyable amidst it being online. Theres a lot of little work like reading quizzes and discussions posts to keep us on track, but very doable. Theres also occasional lecture quizzes and then a final paper. Overall, I really enjoyed this class. If you need it for GE, take it!
The course is structured very clearly which makes being successful straightforward. The course content was really interesting. He did a good job of trying to respectfully present all sides of the more controversial topics we covered. The course was asynchronous but he was super helpful at office hours. Overall, I felt like he did a fantastic job.
his class was neutral. he did have some interesting lectures. what I thought was annoying was that there were reading quizzes every Monday and it was only 10 minutes. the reading was a bit boring and long so it's difficult to fully absorb the information. there is extra credit and a paper as the final. he is available on email to clarify questions
I enjoyed taking his class. He did a great job at remaining neutral when it came to serious topics. He is actually really funny and made lectures very fun. What I didn't like is that his assignments were due every Monday night. These assignments were on topics that we did not cover in class yet.
Professor Chen was a really good professor for the humanities course. There were a few assignments to complete each week but they were really manageable. He assigns readings and quizzes to do before we talk about it in class so it kinda forces you to really understand the material which I like. Overall, he's a really great professor.
Amazing Professor even if you have no background in Philosophy or ethics. I showed up to lecture every time even though it was not required. Make sure you do the readings before the lectures so you get the most of it. One of the best teachers I've had.
Absolutely amazing and understanding. He is honest and wants everyone to succeed, definitely take him.
He was my first college teacher in 2018 and he was amazing!!! I don't think I ever submitted one of these for him, but he definitely deserves another 5.
Had him Fall 2021 Great all around and all positive
Amazing professor who is really passionate about philosophy and its various aspects. I RECOMMEND HIM. I'd be surprised if you get less than a B. He really just wants you to understand his material and he makes classes fun! Loved him!
Great first year seminar course. Two papers and 10 small assignments that are very easy. Attendance is mandatory. He deducts five points for every absence. As long as you go to class this is an easy A.
2nd time I've had him. 10/10. Had him for Phil 21, now this one, and currently looking to take his 3rd class that he teaches.
Was a good, understanding professor, he put a lot of effort into his lectures to make them engaging. Cares for his students. There are a lot of reading and the readings are difficult to understand and will probably have to read them multiple times to understand them.
I was recommend this professor and I didn't regret taking this class at all. His lecture are interesting and very rememberable. You still have to read the book for the weekly quizzes but the quizzes are like 2 questions so it was pretty easy. I would most definitely take his class again.
Good professor that is also will to hear you. There are mostly short quizzes, discussions, and one essay, but they are all easy.
I LOVED Jon's class. He was so passionate about the material and always made lecture fun. Even though attendance is not mandatory, I highly recommend you attend class because there is lecture quizzes for the class based on material only provided through lecture. I enjoyed every second of his classes and I would certainly take his class again!
This dude is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. Super funny, down to earth, supportive, caring, and just an all around amazing teacher. While attendance isn't required, just come to class, his lectures are entertaining and engaging. There's a textbook and some reading, but it isn't too hard. Would highly recommend.
Jon is the best professor I've had so far. His content was always entertaining and he made sure it was understandable. I love the way he teaches and he also cares about all his students. It's an easy class to pass if you do the writing discussions.
Prof Chen brings a lot of passion to his PHIL2 class. While attendance is mandatory, the lectures are engaging and worth attending. The readings can be a bit dense, but using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook really helps. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
I would recommend Professor Chen to anyone who doesn't even go to Sac State. Such a caring and amazing professor who wants his students to succeed. The lectures for this class are long but with his jokes and side conversations it goes by quick. We are given a 10-15 min break in the middle which is great. 10/10 professor!!
Even though I was not that interested in philosophy, Professor Chen really made the fun and interesting. He is the probably the best teacher I had this semester and is very passionate about his job and his student's lives. I highly recommend taking any of Professor Chen's classes, even if you are not a philosophy major.
Fun guy and dumbs the readings down in class. He has a crazy Halloween story so stay tuned if you're taking this class in the fall.
Jon was an amazing lecturer! He is caring, funny, and sensitive when it comes to certain topics. He is super knowledgable when it comes to topics as well, super engaging. Attendance matters A LOT but it's not mandatory. Overall, the class is not easy, but come to class and put in the effort and an A won't be too hard to get!
