Had him for international trade. extremely brilliant and informative.
really cool guy, knows his stuff, great class, just dont take it early in the morning
First of all his tests are FAIR and NOT easy or hard. Second, he's helpful in the sense that he will respond to your questions. Third, he's organized and uses powerpoint. Moreover he posts his notes. I strongly recomend his class.
Brilliant man - doctorate in economics from Yale. Great lecturer, cares about students' understanding. Overall, a really great professor. If you're interested in economics, don't miss out on taking a class with him. Had him for Int'l Econ/Foreign Trade

Excellent Professor, best of all he speaks english! Not too many of those at hunter any more. He makes sure that you understand the material and he's not boring. Just go to class and do your problems sets and you'll get an A. His curves are very lenient!
Prof. Conning is an excellent teacher. His lectures are clear and informative. His exams are all from his notes. Extremely organized. If you study your lecture notes and review his study sheets, there is no reason why his class shouldn't be a breeze. I strongly recommend his class.. :-)
Professor Conning is a great professor one of the best at hunter. He is a really nice huy. The best thing about him is that he dosent speak down to you like some professors. He speaks to you as an equal. great guy i reccomend him.PS he studied at Columbia not Yale
He is smart and yet humble. He is a wonderful, dedicated teacher who really gets into the subject and keeps the whole class engaged. He is cute too, in an intelletual, sensitive guy, way.
Great professor, explains material well. Study the text and sample tests and the class will be very easy.
He is great and very dedicated! Very smart yet down to earth. If you have ANY question, don't hesitate to see him during his office hours! He is very helpful.
I took a lot of classes and this class was like a walk in a park. Conning was very clear. He even gives questions from his practice exam. So just study his slides + go over the practice exam and you SHALL HAVE NO PROBLEMS. I got an A-, and I thought I was going to get like B at least. Take him u wont regret.
hardly recommended
great class and great teacher!
very easy class with great professor. If you pay attention in class and do the homework you got an A
VERY HELPFUL, CLEAR, AND GREAT PEASON. hIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
it's an intro class, so it was pretty basic, but he covered a lot of material. Got a good crash course in economics. He's a great professor in that he conveys ideas and concepts well, easy to understand. He's really passionate about econ's and it rubs off. Great professor.
His class is boring. The exams are not easy but the lecture notes are useful. His teaching is clear. He is a good and responsible professor.
Really nice guy, makes the subject matter as interesting as possible, policies are liberal - highly recommended!
The person below was a little too harsh although I agree with many of his/her points. However, i think he is really knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. If you really wanna learn, take him! You will become better than those commentators on CNBC about world trade, literally! He is a little bit lazy but hey, no one is perfect!
I don't know what people are talking about. At least in my eco 340 that i took with him, he was such a slacker. never returned first exam, returns the second after two full weeks (excl. thankgiving) and he promises to put something up but never does or puts it up 30min b4 the exam. Not responsible at all. He is knowledgeable of the subject matter..
One of the most interseting classes I have took, Conning knows his stuff, curves grades, tests. Pick his class , won't be dissapointed!
3 exams total, 2 test (20% each), 1 cumulative final (18 chapters, 40%),the aplia program (20%) is 70 dollars, if you want to pay for it on that site, the chapters are on aplia site, if you don't like reading it on the computer, the book + aplia code is 120 dollars, if you want the book included. He's a nice guy, but he stays on one topic too long.
Conning is a really nice/smart and respectful professor. My only problem with him was that there wasn't really much good rhythm or flow to his teaching style. It was hard to know where he was going and what he thought was important. The first and second exam were HARD. Final was easier. I give him a B- as a prof. Be ready to work if you take him.
Very Boringgggg!!!! The way he explain things make the class even worse...1 midterm and 1 final. Never gave back the midterm. Exams are okay, not too hard.
Great professor!easy grader. 2 midterms and 1 final consist of multiple choice question. He even give sample question before the test. He explains the concept very well and make me interesting in economic.
He is a knowledgeable and supportive professor. If you have any questions, he is always willing to spend extra time on helping you. I think he is one of the best prof in the department. If you want to really learn sth about econ, dont hesitate to take his class
Wonderful professor! Very kind, very helpful and very knowledgeable. He's one of the best at Hunter. I wish all professors here would be like him.
Increased my intrest in economics. Really nice guy who tries to help you with any problems you are having. Need to get the textbook and purchase an aplia code (homework every week). Two midterms 1 final. The tests aren't easy tho it helps to come to class. Nice guy overall. Not an easy A maybe an easy B
I highly recommend this professor and class. It might change the way students think about the world. Professor Conning is enthusiastic about the subject he teaches. It is also apparent that he is a really nice guy. As others have commented, he is cute in an intellectual way. Class can get a little boring sometimes, but it's a large lecture class.
Great guy and professor. Ignore the previous rating!! This guy is really nice and helpful. His exams aren't hard if you study. I will admit that the HW is hard but if you need help go to his office hours or his TA. 2 midterms and one final plus the weekly HW. He curves both midterms and the final. I got a grade higher than what I expected!
He's a good professor, although some of his conversations may be a bit dry if you don't appreciate the subject. He's very kind, and helpful when you need help. He curves at the end of the semester, so don't fret too much about his semi-tricky exams. The homework is an easy 21%. I received an A and missed quite a few lectures, so you should be fine.
Professor Conning is one of the most kind and best professors out there. He truly wants all of his students to succeed and his class was great. MUST TAKE COURSE!!
Very kind and helpful professor. He gives practice exams before both his midterms and final. There is HW every week on aplia which is $90 and has an ebook with it.Each HW assignment will take about 40 minutes to do. He drops the lowest 2 HW scores. Study very hard for this class and don't slack off. He curves for every exam which helps a lot!!!
He's a nice guy and he really wants to help his students. Sometimes he loses focus but he stresses the most important parts of the lectures. Attempt to do the online homeworks, study his lecture slides and the textbook for the exams and it's a fair A.
Loved him!! Really easy, laidback teacher. Increased my interest in economics. His tests are relatively fair if you actually pay attention to the class. Overall, I'd take him again.
The class was boring because it was 75 minutes of powerpoint. It's not completely his fault since we were in a lecture hall. He puts the powerpoint slides online and only took attendance 2-3 times. If you do well on the online HW and fairly well on the two midterms/final then you'll get at least a C+.
Prof. Conning is always trying to engage his students in relevant economics. He gets a bit too excited and always runs out of time before the end. His exams seem to be more difficult than his lecture notes, but his notes provide enough information to not have to read every word in the textbook. Online hw is a pain but he weighs grades very fairly.
Horrible. His class is so boring, but if you're looking for a class you don't have to attend, this is it. It's just a bunch of lectures and slides which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but he makes it bad. I love econ and he made it boring and difficult to understand. But since attendance isn't mandatory of course everyone gives him a high rating.
Really boring. A bunch of powerpoint slides. A couple of problem sets to turn in. Exams are decent but a bit difficult. Avoid if possible.
He's a nice guy, but this class will bore you to oblivion. His shy voice and constant stammering will lull you to sleep. I hate being absent, but I had to skip lectures in order to save my soul, just like 3/4 of the other students who only came on exam days. He did curve every test by A LOT, and I didn't expect my grade, but the class felt endless.
Lectures are super long and sometimes could get very dull and boring. But the online homework is fairly easy if you pay attention and easy to get a good grade on them.
He is great. Its clear that he is passionate about what he teaches. Sometimes his lectures go off on a tangent. His lectures are engaging, especially with the prisoner delema example. Participation matters so make sure you have your iClicker. As long as you do the practice midterms and read the textbook you will be able to get a good grade.
Great professor but his lectures will bore the life out of you. He explains things clearly but doesn't inspire student in staying interested. Good grader by the way, always curves test grades. Don't bother spending $50 on the online textbooks. It isn't necessary as long as you're listening in class.
I would say that the class is life applicable, than many others. The professor is amazing, very engaged and tries to make it relevant to the real world and fun. If you want to learn economics, take him. If you are not interested in trying economics (that is give it a chance), don't waste your and his time. Tests aren't hard if you study.
Professor Conning attempts to clarify to his students any concept they do not understand. He curves a lot though but doesn't necessarily follow the syllabus. He is always a class or two behind. However, It was a pleasure to take him. If you need to take an intro to econ course, take 100 with him. The other professors are harder and stricter.
Extremely nice and helpful
Prof. Conning is great. This class was very straightforward and well balanced. Although sometimes he can be kind of boring the way he moves around the classroom all jumpy makes you just have to stay awake. If you're not really into econ. it might be harder but it's very easy to grasp the concepts and he is always there to help.
Exams were difficult and the practice exam was nothing like the real exam. Lectures are long and theres too much information being force into lectures. Sometimes he makes mistakes or start jumping from one thing to the next and it gets confusing and off track.
Professor Conning is alright. He does care about making things clear in class, it is just hard to pay attention in class the way he teaches. His slides are not helpful when it comes to doing the homework so you will have to learn it by using the textbook. At time the textbook doesn't make clear either. I would say take another professor if you can
He is terrible . Never will take him again . Doesnt teach well and will make you behind in all your other classes. Never learned anything from him and its like he makes stuff up in class sometimes. The textbook is extremely hard to understand and its very confusing. exams are hard
It's not hard to pass the class and the professor is very nice and very knowledgeable. I would love to take more classes with him. There's homework due every week and he gives extra credit for going to tutoring.
I only payed attention to the lectures half the time and still did very well in his class. The new online book and homework are very helpful. Tests can be a little tricky but not terrible. He jumps around a lot which is kinda funny, but I'd rather that than a boring monotone voice. He's very nice and easy to follow with the slides. Would recommend
A respectful professor. Very intelligent, helpful. Lectures is amazing. he knows the best reading materials, and always update news, you learn a lot. The class is interesting, you definitely won't be bored. He will explain the reading materials, that is the fun part, because this is how you understand the trade from the book concept to the real
His lectures are so boring, it is so hard to pay attention to them. He uses iClicker questions but only does like 4 of them so if you miss those days (even if you're there for everything else) you lose 30% of your grade. He does put a very nice curve on the exams (2 exams, 30% of the grade each) so it's helpful. But it's a lot of self teaching.
Professor Conning is easily one of the nicest and understanding professors at Hunter. All his homework is online and he gives like 2 tests in class. His work is very very reasonable, it is an easy A if you do relatively okay on exams and your homework. The material is also easy to catch onto. Take him if you have the chance and boost your GPA.
He is SO understanding. He doesnt mind a lot of late homeworks. He gives one or two easy chapters of hw from the online textbook every week. The 3 tests are straight forward if you did the hw. You dont really have to show up to class to pass since lectures reiterate the textbook. I loved to show up though bc Conning is a very passionate lecturer
Attendance is mandatory since there are questions during lecture as participation grade. Must read textbook materials for homework which he give often. 2 midterm and 1 final. Everything is straight forward. Prof. Conning is very understanding that it is hard for a lot of students around this time. He gives plenty of chances for makeup work.
Professor Conning teaches you what's necessary to pass the class. He gives problem sets that are doable, and tests that you can pass if you pay attention. He does have a tendency to ramble before getting to the point, but he gets there eventually. He may put you to sleep, but his passion for what he teaches shines through when he talks. He's kind.
If you take him for online he makes you buy this program called TopHat which makes it easier for him to assign questions for participation during class, assign hw, etc.. Weekly hw, and three major tests, it's not too bad. Tests are harder than the practice, but he is kind and curves them alot. Do hw and read the chapters you will be fine!
Good class overall. His lectures were informative however some rambling at times. Some lectures felt unnecessary to attend. The homework, text, and expectations are transparent. TopHat platform is mediocre and buggy. Always willing to answer and clarify questions. The exams had some unexpected questions but Prof Conning always gave a fair curve.
As long as you put in the effort, you'll do great. He's super caring and helpful at office hours. Exams can be hard, but he gives many practice questions and curves them a lot. Lecture attendance is required (on random days he asks participation questions) but they're interesting since he applies concepts to real life and current events.
Professor Conning is easy going. He is not a harsh grader he curves it when needed depending on the class performance of course. Be sure to study and you will pass.
This class is SO HARD! You really need to be there and listen in order to pass take it from me LMAO! You pay 70 dollars for the program that you have to access for this class so get that money! Participation is done through the program along with home-works and class participation. STUDY HARD BESTIE STUDY HARD!!!!!!!!!
the professor is really amazing. he makes the subject easy on you as well as the grading! He gives lots of credits and curves so ITS HARD to fail the class. His tests are very similar to the review sheet but that doesn't mean you shouldn't study his slides! study very well for his exams and u will get easy A+. he is very understanding and nice guy
Hard tests but its pretty hard to fail since he curves them based on how the class does. Most of my class failed the test and we still ended up with passing grades. Lots of homework too but it relates close to the tests so do it!! attendance not required but he does do some participation stuff so i wouldnt skip. abt $70 for tophat hw site
a lot of tests (4!) and They were not much like the review sheet. He is a very nice man but not great at his job, most lectures I left feeling like I had learned nothing! I am usually good at economics but this class was boring and test heavy which I do not like. Just go to class and study and you will be okay
Professor Conning provides a clear grading criteria on the syllabus, but the in-person lectures are long and could be summed up into a few slides to better reflect what exactly will be on the tests. Many students stop attending class since the same material is available on the class website, but he does stop and clarify when needed.
He has very generous grade curves for exams. The textbook and participation is through an app you have to pay for.
He's a caring professor. It's lecture heavy and if you're not someone who can stand long lectures, then read his slides afterwards. Do his tophat diligently and go to his office hours for questions. I'm surprised he's not annoyed by how often I go to his office hours. I echo everyone else's opinions on the generous curve, but be prepared to study.
Prof Conning is very easy going and generous. Doesn't really respond to emails until a week later but you can go to office hours. Very generous curves on exams. Very knowledgeable in his field and often interacts with students through his tophats. You need to pay a 70 dollar fee to access homework and participation. I would recommend this class.
Wonderful class. Slides and material is posted online. Well respected lectures and content review videos. Tophat is used for work ($60). Weekly HW but often is easy and gives you multiple attempts. Two Midterms and a Final, but is very generous with grading and curves them. Caring for students, and ensures students are well prepared for his tests.
one of the best econ professor ive had and made this class pretty easy as long as you follow what he teaches.
he's one of the nicest professor's at hunter hands down. take his class fr
He genuinely cares about the topics and knows his stuff. Sit in the front to learn, cause in the back u will get bored and not pay much attention. 2 midterms and one final exam. He curved the exams a lot since everyone did most bad. If u don't pay attention, u will HAVE to do a lot of self studying. U have to pay 30ish for tophat.
His classes aren't challenging. attendance isn't mandatory but he uses a website and sometimes posts questions for participation. there isn't a lot of homework but he does have 2 midterms and a final.
He does an excellent job considering the size of the class. He provides a litany of resources for students to be able to succeed, plenty of practice material, and a lot of extra help. Make sure to check Tophat for questions during the lecture time if you're not going to go though, that can pile up quickly. Overall a great class and caring professor
Professor Conning's class was pretty easy. His lectures were a bit boring, but informative. He is genuinely interested in economics and is very knowledgeable. The main platform is TopHat ($70), where class questions, homework, and exam review are posted. There are two midterms and a final, which are very similar to exam review.
Impossible to fail. He offers you tons of materials to study with. Good lectures and very forgiving exam curves. The textbook is viewed through an application called Tophat, I had no complaints and the site worked fluidly. He was easily accessible outside of class and he and his assistant responded to emails extremely quickly. Amazing professor!
We don't use textbooks, u gotta buy Tophat for like $70 but it has all the hw + participation. You can miss class but try not to miss the tophat questions that he has during class (u can do it from home). He curves GENEROUSLY but still put in effort (he gives study guides w practice exam + reuses some questions) 10/10 prof
He is a lovely man and also a great Professor. I wish every professor would be great like him. I will retake his classes if I can!
Hi, Professor Conning! It is Ming! I miss you! Love you! It is nice to see you again during the summer. :)
I hope he teaches 200. I had him for 100 before, and he is great! The goat of the economics department.
His classes are lectures and exams heavy, and participation matters, too. You can learn a lot about basic economics, and that 100 class is the course for introductory economics for economics majors. You will need to use Top Hat for his classes; he used to do that on I-Clicker. You need to spend some money You need to spend some money on it. Thanks!
Easy lectures, a decent amount of textbook reading but nothing crazy. HW is online on tophat. Tests are literally the textbook & in class material. Conning is pretty funny and teaches well. He's also very lenient if you speak with him and curves the tests / reopens HW.
Was .2 off a grade so I asked for extra credit and gave a cold response. Also told him a WEEK in advance that I wouldn't make an exam due to a real family emergency and he wrote a paragraph scolding me. Can't help but think I got on his bad side even though I was nice to him. Def not the worst Prof, but situation seemed unprofessional.
He was super nice to me when i missed my deadlines for HW. His exams are also based on the review materials he gave us on tophat. WHAT THE VIDS HE PERSONALLY MADE, THOSE ARE RLY HELPFUL. also he curves very generously cus he doesnt want anyone to fail the class. but exams are all in person tho. so, make sure to study cus this is an econ class.
Prof. Conning is funny and approachable. If you have a problem you can ask him. Don't skip just because he doesn't take attendance, TopHat (the mandatory textbook app) is fine but his lectures are way better. If you attend class and do the homework it will be easy, don't shoot yourself in the foot by skipping. Exams were graded on a curve.
Been two lectures and I can say I really like this professor. His lectures are very engaging, he's funny, he clearly knows what he is talking about and gives real-world examples. Some students say he drones on about topics but just drink some caffeine or pop a supplement pill so you focus better. He is one of the best professors in the college.
Great professor but be sure to study the material on your own at home so you aren't lost during his lectures. The way Conning formats his lectures gives all of the 250 students in our class the opportunity to get an A in the class, you just have to do YOUR part. You can tell he truly is passionate about teaching and encourages us to think. FOCUS!
Jonathan is a good professor but that midterm was ridiculous. We were not prepared for that. I was scratching my head trying to do the multiple choice and time went by too fast. There has to be a way for us to be better prepared.
His lectures are engaging, and you can tell he is passionate. He is also extremely kind and understanding. I enjoyed his class, he still remains a favorite professor of mine. His exams are hard, but he curves and he is willing to help students who participate and do homework.
Professor Conning is a good professor. His lectures were very clear and informative, and he had clear criteria for the tests and grading. There is frequent homework, so make sure to stay on top of that. However, the "textbook" used is not very good. An online system called Tophat, which I think isn't the best. Other than that, the class was good.
I do not recommend at all. One of the most difficult professors I have ever had. Gives long boring/confusing lectures. Goes off topic so often that he himself forgets what he says. Good luck passing his exams! Which are extremely confusing, especially in question wording. Final is cumulative.Textbook is not very helpful.
His lectures were good even if you didn't read up on the material. His tests are exactly like the reviews and as long as you take the test and do the assignments, you will pass the class. I was very shocked to get an A because I did pretty bad on one of the midterm exams and I thought I was a goner. I'd say he is also pretty lenient on tophat too
He's a good professor; you're only graded mostly by a midterm, final, group project, and homework, which he only gives a few of on Tophat. He isn't too difficult and does make lectures as engaging as possible.
