Great Teacher, charges you to think and use your brain
Only iF you study & work hard, will you ace his classes
you think you have a grasp on the material, but you don't on the test
This man is amazing. I've never learned more in any course!
HE IS A GREAT TEACHER BUT THE TESTS ARE OFF THE HOOK(HARD)
Entertaining. Remember his little stories for HARD TESTS!
Best prof I had in college. Very hard, but learned an amazing amount. Essay tests are to show you read the material, just write down everything you know from class with examples from books.
makes a comm class bearable, entertaining, but you definiely need to read and not skip class
good teacher. willing to help anytime. study hard and read the book.
Great teacher but hard class! Study, study, study!
he is pretty funny, but the tests are tough, gives few notes, so you mave to buy the book
Dr. Crane is good at what he does. This course in itself is tough, but he does whatever he can to help you. Remember his stories for the test that are out of this world!
The class is very difficult IF you don't come to class and you don't read the book. He's a very good professor, just do the work and you'll be fine. he has a built in curve for the tests!
The only way you can make it through this course is if you enjoy film. The film lab doesn't consist of the latest blockbusters(thank goodness). Understand the chapter objectives for the test. Be prepared to write a lot for the tests! Oh the pain!
don't be afraid of this class- just read, go to SI, pay attention in class. it really isn't hard to get a B, if you want it.
I WENT TO CLASS, TOOK A TON OF NOTES, WENT TO SI, READ THE BORING TEXT SEVERAL TIMES AND WAS STILL NOT ABLE TO MAKE A C IN THIS CLASS!!! I NORMALLY DON'T HAVE TROUBLE WITH SCHOOL, BUT THE TESTS IN THIS COURSE WERE TRICKEY!!! STUDY!!! STUDY!!! STUDY!!!
Its a hard class and i did badly but not because of Crane. I thought he was a wonderful teacher and i recomend him to anyone. i can actually pay attention to him.
My favorite professor to date. This guy is a cross between the top professor academically and jerry seinfeld. Learning while laughing, dosent get any better than him.
Film Theory is not an easy class by any means, but it is very rewarding and you will learn a tremendous amount...Dr. Crane is great!
Don't take in summer. I read, studied, went to class took good notes and still had trouble. Tough tests w/tricky ?s
Hard class, but Crane is awesome. He was funny and always willing to help. If you want an interesting class that challenges you, take any one of Crane's class. He really made the lectures fun.
I've had Crane before and knew this would be a challenge. Challenge is not the word, more like ridiculous. I still like Dr.Crane but I don't recommend taking Mass Comm with him. We never talked about anything related to the field. No movies, radio just a lot of oral cultural. Not what I had in mind.
One word to describe Dr. Crane, heartless. Do not take him for a GPA booster is all I got to say.
i have mixed feelings for him. he is an awesome, smart, funny, teacher but his class is A REAL CHALLENGE. I got 2 A's on tests, went to all classes, spent hours on essay, tried my very best and got a C. everyone i know in that class got a C or lower. he's a GREAT teacher but expect a C or lower
Do not take this professor if you want to learn about Mass Media. He is Horrible, and never stays on task. His class was very misleading, and counterproductive. Take Professor Burton instead
Tricky theoretical questions. If I were you, I'd take this professor. He's funny and helps you understand material. Make sure you READ the book and take good notes.
The material covered in this class requires some thought, but he is an awesome professor. He gives examples that really clarify many of the topics that are covered (most are even funny). Read the book, take the notes, go to S.I.!! If you have to take a class you might as well enjoy it. J. Crane!
I enjoyed this class. Although the class was large, he made it interactive. You do have to read in order to pass the class. I think that people assumed that they would be able to read the night before and pass the class... NOT! It's an easy class as long as you read, listen in class & don't leave after the break.
I hated this class & only took it because of my major. Spent many sleepless nights before and after each exam worried that I was going to have to repeat the insanity. HARD class. Tricky questions on the test.If you have to take this class, reading the text, re-writing your notes, and SI is a MUST!!
This class is hard to say the least but Dr. Crane is a great Professor. He gives wonderful examples. You have to come to class and read the text. I found this class to be on of the most challenging. If it wasn't for Crane I wouldn't have gotten an A.
Dr. Crane is very good at teaching Comm Theory, so good at it that it is almost impossible to understand the material. He is willing to help with anything but reading and studying heavily is required. I studied every day and read all the chapters twice and barely pulled of a C. If you are taking for 2nd time or worried about passing take in summer.
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class is NOT a GPA booster, but it is interesting. Only take his classes if you like a real challenge, if you are looking to coast through the semster, STAY AWAY!!! His tests are all essay and extremely hard. For those who think you can **** the essay ?'s, think agian. He will call you out on it quick!
This guy is out of his damn mind! If you have him for Film Theory, run as fast as you can! He is horrible. He plays favorites, so if you can on his**** list, you might as well kiss your GPA goodbye. He doesn't listen to reason and the highest grade I've even seen come out of this class is a C, & that's the people he likes! DO NOT TAKE!!!
Good luck.
Dr. Crane is a wonderful professor. His tests are very precise so they can be difficult, however, if you are willing to take good notes, read and put in the neccesary study time you will do well. I did all of those things and made a B in the class. The material isnt that hard you just have to be present for all material and put in some outside time
One word for this man, horrible!!! Drop this class, I'm serious! The only way you will pass is to give him wants to hear; even when he asks your opinion. He's impossible to reason with too! This guy is just a straight up bad teacher and an ****!
Dr. Crane is a very good professor. His is somewhat tough though on his exams. I plan on taking another class with him before I graduate.
as long as you don't buy the book (syllabus said we'd go through 28 chapters...at the end of the semester we were on chapter 8) you should be ok. tests are tricky, not at all easy, but class is very interesting and dr. crane knows what he's talking about. great examples - funny laid back atmosphere
Great professor. Tests are hard. Read the book, and take notes in class that is very important. Always has great stories, and he is always willing to help. He knows how to lecture a class, but keep it interesting. I know I am repeating mysekf, but READ THE BOOK AND TAKE NOTES! Go to class his examples are on the tests!!!
dr. crane is a great professor. great sense of teaching and interesting/creative lectures. I love him yet i hate him. love him for teaching me lots of things in a most interesting way. hate him for his tough tests and grades. if u want to learn and be challenged, take him. if u're lazy and don't want to work, don't take him. NICE PROFESSOR
if you are looking for an easy elective... this is not it. The reading is graduate level and the tests are essay along with a big paper. Have to work hard and he has pop quizzes. He is a great teacher and teaches it well but doesn't grade easy. really can't afford to miss a class otherwise you'll have trouble. overall great teacher tho
He is hard but good
Professor Crane is a wonderful teacher. He gives amazing examples to clarify all the vocab. and such that the book complicates. Compare your class notes to the book and you will be fine. Make sure you go to class because notes are a HUGE part of the tests.
He is very animated and a nice guy, but his lectures can be confusing at times. The tests are hard and you have to put a LOT of time into studying to pass them. So if you have the time to study everyday for a couple hours, then you should do fine. Otherwise, don't take this class.
Great Professor. I actually enjoyed this class. His interesting examples really help. Just remember them for the test! And do exactly as he says. Read the book and take notes and take notes in class as well. If you follow his advice, a good grade is definitely possible.
This class requires you to put a decent amount of time into studying lecture notes and reading the text. You have to understand the concept to do well in the course. Dr. Crane is a great professor and will challenge you on the tests, so make sure you're prepared.
He is nice and tries to help, but test are extremely difficult. Make sure you put a lot of time into studying!
Great teacher, but you bette be ready to take him and his test seriously! I had to read the book, take notes in class, and borrow friends notes just to understand and I still got C's on his tests!!! Good Luck!!! I like him as a teacher hes great but the tests are hard!!!
funny teacher. Really works hard to try and relate the lecture to our generation so we can understand it. Comm theory is a very hard class. You have to make sure you keep up 100% to understand. Tests are very hard. I only made it out of there with a C.
Very entertaining teacher! Funny stories! You have 3 tests and they are very hard. I suggest you take very detailed notes in class (write down his ridiculous examples! they show up again!), take notes from the book, and then take notes combining the two (like he says to do). It is a lot of work, but if you show up and do readings you'll do fine.
Love love love Dr. Crane. Best teacher I have ever had, i actually liked going to his class. His lectures are very interesting. He gives great examples that relate to everyday life. Go to class and take notes and remember the examples and you will do fine!
Crane is a fun teacher to listen to. He tends to hit tangents that stray away from the topic. The book is the holy grail. His test questions do more to test you to see if you read. Most questions are sometimes more complex in the wordiness(trickiness) than the knowledge required to know the term. Expect every test to make or break your esteem.
Overall I think that he was a decent teacher. His examples were very useful and he puts everything in an example that makes sense to college students. He can be pretty funny. He may seem hard, but I think it is just due to the material. The tests can be pretty tough and the wording can be tricky at times.
I didn't purchase the book and I have a feeling I am going to pay for it with my GPA this semester. He is a cool guy and real laid back, but his tests are very difficult. Typical BS tests you hate to have with tricky questions and sneaky wording. I'd probably recommend taking one of the other 3 classes required for the MACRO portion of Comm. @ UNCC
I love Dr. Crane for the most part. His lectures are interesting and he's funny. His tests are crucial. For Mass Media, thats all you have are 3 tests. He uses material from both class and the book. The questions are super tricky and most questions, at least two answers always seem right.
If you have to take Comm Theory, TAKE CRANE! He is phenomenal. His lectures are hilarious and he explains everything so clearly. He uses great examples to help you understand them better! Most of the people that fail this class are people that don't go to class. If you go to class, you will be just fine!
Crane is probably the best teacher for this course. The material is completely BS (as is the comm major in general), but he provides good examples that make his tests tolerable. Go to every class. Every. Single. One. A lot of ditzy girls and frat dorks end up paying dearly for not going and then whine later about the class being ridiculously hard.
As non comm major, class was useless. He's a good lecturer, but the tests are overly difficult and confusing and are the only grades. Claims of 40% fail rate which should indicate a problem. For a decent grade you'll pour excessive amounts of time into studying and reading the book. Material felt fragmented and without connection between topics.
Prof. Crane is one of the best! He has a knack for taking abstract subjects and making them easily comprehensible with his (often funny) examples. The material will require a lot of your time outside of class. GO TO EVERY SINGLE CLASS. He covers a lot of ground in each one. I truly enjoyed his course and would def take one of his classes again.
Com theory is known for being a hard class, but because of Pro. Crane I found it interesting. The tests are hard because there is a lot of material covered, but Crane does all he can to prepare you. Take him but also take notes and study outside of class time! Crane actually does want to help everyone pass CT!
This is a very hard course, as in the material being hard.Dr.Crane makes the material more interesting and understanable.Eventhough that this course have a high fail rate there is still a way to pass.If you show him that you are working hard than he help you to make sure you will not fail. Make sure you go to class, write your own notes, and read.
Comm Theory is a difficult class. I had to take the class twice to get a C. Take detailed notes, never skip class, READ the chapters (MORE THAN ONCE), and study hard. Dr. Crane is friendly, though. GO TO SI!!! It helps! Don't talk in class or mess around because he'll call you out in front of everyone.
HARD HARD HARD class. Good teacher, but his test are crazyyy.
He's a fantastic professor, good at making abstract concepts come alive. He tells stories to make things easier to understand, remember them, they're similar or the same to the one's on the test. Tests are confusing, study a lot. Take his advice in "marrying" the notes. It helps. When you think you know it front and back, study more. It pays off.
AWESOME professor. took 3 of his classes. don't need the book for any of his classes just come to class and take really good notes. he is really funny and always willing to help. test are a bit tricky but not impossible.he does make you think though.3 papers that are really easy and count for a good bit of the grade. wish i had him for all classes
One of the best professors I have had in college. However, EXTREMELY DIFFICULT class. Read the book, multiple times. Take detailed notes. Never miss a class. Do not look for the easy way out, if you do it'll be to find a new major. The class is passable--you just have to work hard and study harder.
Avoid at all costs!! Boring lectures and difficult tests.
test are HARD he has a 20 page paper is RIDICULOUS!!! decent lectures. no elective should be this hard
He's a good professor and is very knowledgeable. The tests were hard since the material was so abstract and theory based. However, if you pay attention in class, you can do well. Visiting him during office hours is a big help since he goes over how he writes test questions. This class is much easier in the summer.
I was terrified to take this class because of all the horror stories I had heard about it- it was hard, but I LOVED prof. Crane. If you go to every class and write down all notes and examples, you will pass. I would recommend him to anyone! He truly cares whether or not you understand the information- you just have to be willing to put forth effort!
Crane has a fun personality and I enjoyed his sometimes dry humor. Tries to use examples to explain then revisits the examples on the tests. Read the book and attend SI sessions for more clarity, actually attend class, and study notes and you'll be fine!
Go to class everyday, his LECTURES teach to the test!!!! His examples are so so helpful. His tests arent bad, in fact read it carefully and you can find the answers sitting right in the question. His material is boring, but he does a great job at bringing it alive!!
Dr. Cran is a very enthusiastic and well versed speaker. He loves communications. However dont make the mistake of thinking you dont need to study just because the first time he tells you something it makes sense to you. He will make the ?'s on the test a bit harder to truly test your comprehension.. also, read/study group. Ask ?'s, he's helpful
Rarely have I come across a teacher that reminds me how important education actually is. By far the most interesting and inspirational teacher I have ever come across. He is so enthusiastic about his work that it made going to class something to look forward to. Tests are hard but if you study you have nothing to worry about. Very helpful.
Great teacher! Give lots of examples which are very helpful in understanding the course material. Attendance is a must because just reading the textbook is not enough to do well in the class. As long as you actually pay attention in class and study for the tests you will be fine. I'd definitely take Dr. Crane again.
You will hear horror stories about his class, but I don't get what all that's about. He says you need to read the book, but his tests are straight from the lectures so I wouldn't bother getting the book. He uses good examples to help you understand the obscure material. It's really pretty easy if you just pay attention to him.
There were only 3 graded assignments for the whole course. Those three assignments were the three tests. Although he has a curve, if you fail those tests, you fail the course. He doesn't grade on attendance but it's necessary to pass.
His lectures were entertaining, but he is definitely the type of professor that says one thing in class, and is completely dissected and turned around on the test. He makes you think outside the box, which can be good, but definitely have to gt inside his head to pass his tests.
Dr. C is an excellent teacher. His class is all lecture, however, he makes it interesting. Be prepared to come to class and take notes. Pay attention to the examples he gives you in class. Similar examples are on the tests. Note cards are helpful in remembering the theories. You do NOT need the book. This class is EASY if you study a bit.
Dr. Crane has been in the business for quite some time and I respect that. He makes you work for the grade! His lectures are very detailed, sometimes too detailed. Read and study. Expect a extremely difficult and over extended final paper.
This is a tough class. It may be an elective, but Dr. Crane treats it just like any other class. The topic is not very interesting overall and the textbook is mind numbing. Tests can be easy if you show up to class and read. Gives pop quizzes and a lengthy final paper.
You must attend class because his tests focus mostly on the lectures not the text, but he makes class interesting. Gives several examples and welcomes questions. He is also funny and approachable as well.
loved his class, but you do need to come to class. If you come to class you don't have to read at all. 95% of his questions come from his lectures and he will reuse the examples in class on his tests.
Jonathan Crane was one of the teachers that taught my LBST film class this semester. I found out after awhile that he is an extremely unreliable professor, and that he will not lend a helping hand if needed. Crane is extremely unspecific during lectures and leaves students no room to form their own thoughts and opinions. Would never take again.
Despite being a Communications Professor at the University, his inadequate ability to convey his wants and ideas for the course material definitely hurt the class. The class was advertised as a film class but was more of a bait-and-switch as all the films WE paid for and watched out of class, his lectures made little sense in analyzing the films.
I would not take Crane for an Honors Topic class! He's grading criteria is super vague and he's kind of a hypocrite. He says we are free to express our opinions, even if they differ from his, and then he calls you out saying that your opinion is wrong. You have to write A LOT of papers. Lectures are pretty boring.
Took him over the summer for intro to com. He does not like when you show up late. Also strict on cellphone use. Pros- 3 test and but he only counts your two highest. no papers no other assignments no group work. my advice is to show up everyday take notes on lectures bc the examples he shares in class are on the test. test are reasonable.
Dr. Crane is a really great professor. I took his class over the summer. He had a book, but I never bought it and did just fine in class. He lectures the whole time, but he's really funny and uses a lot of examples, so it's not that boring. Class grade was made up of just 3 test grades, but the tests were weighted depending on how well you did
Crane is an engaging professor. He is passionate about teaching and his lectures are fun, but you have to work very hard for a good grade. He makes class thought provoking. While he is good at what he does, you have to come to class prepared to learn and ask questions. This course is NOT for those looking for an easy A.
Ive taken him for my LBST course this semester and oh boy. A nice and philosophical man, but sometimes you just dont know what the heck hes talking about. His lectures and class readings have so many big words that you dont even know what he was trying to say. All assigned films are required to be watched outside of class with your own money.
Each question on the tests feels like it's asking for your opinion but really, you need to answer how you think they would answer.
Hes a nice man but his lectures tend to be very wordy and hard to understand. You also have to watch the films assigned outside of class with your own money. However, I suggest using wikipedia to get the films plot. Questions are mainly based off of that.
He's an amazing teacher! I would definitely take his class. It's based off of three tests but you can pass them all If you just focus on taking notes during his lectures. Be sure to use a laptop for notes so you can get the most out of it!
Good guy, but I did not like his teaching style. Lectures the entire time and there were only 3 tests the whole semester. He also will call you out and tell you to get out of his class if you talk at all in class.
Dr Crane is an amazing and inspirational lecturer. His lectures are amazing but they do not tie with what will be on the test. This class you are only grade by 3 test (1st is 20% of your final , 2nd is 30% of your final grade and the final is 50% of your overall score). This class is made to filter out comm majors. This is coming from an A student
This is honestly the worst professor that I have taken at UNC Charlotte. Please do not take his class. The test in this class are ridiculous and amount of information that he gives you and the amount of time that you have to prepare for the test are unrealistic. If you have to have him as a professor be ready to take good notes and study A LOT!!!
You will only have 3 grades in this class and its your 3 tests. You will need to come to class if you want to pass. I honestly liked Dr. Crane because you can tell he really cares and wants everyone to do well. I got the book but only glanced at it a few times, studying the notes was the most helpful. Tests are all MC but not a walk in the park.
I'm not really sure why he has bad reviews? Yes, the class is hard, but not because of him it's simply the material. I would definitely take him again. He is lecture heavy but funny and tries his best to keep you engaged. There are only 3 exams that make up your grade, the lowest is worth 25%, middle is 35%, and your highest grade is 40%
The material is extremely hard but this is a weed out class for communication majors! Go to the SI sessions it truly helps most students are having the same issues as you. Class is made up of 3 tests so you have to study diligently. Use your laptop for notes sometimes his lectures are fast passed. Not sure why he has bad reviews.
You need to come to class! He goes over pretty much everything on the test in class but you need to be able to understand the concepts. He gives lots of examples and will ask you to relate similar examples on the tests to concepts. I thought the tests were pretty fair and only a few of the questions came from the book and werent covered in class.
I think Dr. Crane is a great professor. He is willing to help you with anything you need in his class. I took the class over the summer so there wasnt a lot of assignments but he gave great feedback about how to get better grades on assignments. He makes the material easy to understand and keeps you interested in the lectures.
I took his class after failing it with a different professor and understood everything. He made it so easy to learn the material and complete assignments. I had a little bit of trouble writing my final essay for him and that tipped my grade, but his class was never stressful for me. Do go to the online lecture because he'll mention quiz answers!!!
I love Dr Crane. Hes a very nice man and gives great examples. He explains concepts really well. We have weekly quizzes that if you take notes during lecture, youll ace. 2 major papers. Be extra careful on all your citations on the papers as he does not take kindly to anything cited incorrectly & will drop your grade significantly.
Crane, is a kind man. I recommend attending all his lectures and take good notes for that would be the only way to be successful on his weekly quizzes (all essay form). In the beginning it was hard trying to figure out his criteria for grading (not very clear) but once you figure that out you will be ok - or at least pass. Very writing heavy.
He is as jolly as Santa Claus, but oh my word. We are in a global pandemic, this is an elective class and he is still requiring his students to write a 20 page final essay. He is an interesting individual, however this is a lot to be putting on his students. I am debating on dropping the class.
Absolutely awful and disrespectful. DO NOT TAKE HE DOES NOT CARE. Reporting him to the dean as its embarrassing hes employed by uncc. He needs another profession acts biased if you question his grading.
This class is easily the most difficult one I have ever taken. The material itself is very difficult, and that is just multiplied because of this professor. I spent a minimum of two weeks carefully writing my papers, emailing Professor Crane almost every single day with questions and citation examples from my paper, yet my grade contradicts this.
Completed all assignments and attended all lectures for this course. Spent over 2 weeks on the final research paper (20 pages) I had a high C in the class, then after the paper he dropped my grade down to a 59% and failed me for the whole course by 1 point. I asked for feedback on the paper and he said there was nothing that he could do about it.
Great professor, really good speaker. He doesn't make class mandatory but all tests are based on his lectures so you need to come to class. He is willing to work with anyone if you just talk to him. I didn't understand his grading style before I took the class, and he's a tough grader, but once you know that, you'll do good.
Professor Crane makes this class as passable as it can be compared to other options at UNCC. While his quizzes use odd, sometimes obscure word choice, they are not impossible. If you go to class and write down basically everything he says, you can definitely pass. This class is extremely hard, but professor Crane is maybe your only safe(ish) bet.
