Dr. Dees is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. His tests are short, multiple-choice exams that could be easily studied for and done well by practicing the homework and study guides he gives out. You can see that he really cares about our learning and success. Definitely would retake his class just to get his signature, funny emails!
This class is a hit or miss. He does not give any chances of extra credit or anything to let you have the best grade you can in the class. If you start off bad in the class, it'll stay that way. For his tests, you can not just memorize things, you need to understand and practice a lot.
Overall was an okay professor. He sometimes teaches as if the students come into the class already knowing the material (ex. tophat questions). Exams were formatted like class questions and worksheets, but each only had 25 MCQ (no space for partial credit). Be careful with wording on exams.
Very funny and a great lecturer. Tests are deceptively difficult but manageable if you go to class and try to understand the concepts. Every email Dr. Dees sends has a funny footnote which I find amusing.
Dees is great! The powerpoints are good but it's better to go to class so he can explain everything better. The tophat questions show up on the exams so make sure you understand how and when to use certain concepts (go to office hours). There isn't extra credit but test review days are the best way to score some extra points. He will help you!!
Dr. Dees was great. His tests have the same format as the TopHat and homework assignments. If you do not understand the format, go to office hours or you will not pass the exam!! Classes are all lectures and he does post the PowerPoints. However, he explains more during the lecture than what is written on the slides.
Dees makes bio fun and can be really funny. His emails are always the best! The first exam is the easiest and they get harder as the class goes on, but they're not super difficult. Going to class isn't required, but he does do tophat questions and sometimes takes attendance, so I would recommend going.
Dees was a great professor, but make sure you take detailed notes during class because he does not post the annotated versions of them. The class is super test heavy, since there are five tests and each is 15% of your final grade, so be prepared. The optional readings, weekly quizzes, office hours, and tophats are super helpful.
Dr. Dees was one of my favorite professors. His lectures were straight to the point and contained a lot of practice questions which were in the exam. He never assigns any homework and only gives online quizzes once a week. I recommend reviewing ALL the material he gives because that's what will be on the test! 100% recommend him.
If you are NOT good at memorization and teaching yourself topics from youtube and videos DO NOT TAKE HIM. Your grade is based on 5 tests and a little percentage on online quizzes. His tests are 5x harder than the lecture questions and the TAs teach more than Dees. No extra credit. If you do take him; Science guyz and penji tutoring will help.
Dr. Dees is awesome. He's so funny and is always willing to help students outside of class! His tests are short and he's great about walking you through concepts in discussion questions during lectures and in his office hours! Def take Dr. Dees for bio 1 if you can!!
Very understanding and helpful with good lectures, the tests are just very hard. Thought I did great every time and I never made above a 65.
I really loved this class. His lectures moved pretty quickly which was difficult at times but he was a great lecturer and the in-class discussion questions were really helpful. They were modeled similarly to the way he writes test questions, which helps you on the tests. Tests are conceptual and pretty difficult, but they were all multiple choice.
In class, the Professor briefly reviews content and then transitions to application questions over material the class hasn't had a chance to process yet. I found it very difficult to keep up. The other bio professors give more practice material and have more tests which help with your grade more than Dees's class. He is very charismatic though!
His lectures are very brief and most of the class time is spent doing difficult application problems which are hard because he doesn't teach the content, but rather reviews it. The tests are 25 questions and they are really similar to the TopHat questions in class, study those before the exams. 1107 sucks, but if you have to take it, take Dees.
Dr. Dees is very kind and very funny! He explains things well and his lectures are to the point. in-class questions can be difficult and very application-based, but the test questions are quite similar, so if you study and know the in-class questions and take rly good lecture notes, it's helpful for the tests, which are difficult but def doable!
He doesn't use a textbook but follows PowerPoints during class and posts beforehand. Most units have optional reading that is really helpful. He has practice quizzes that count as homework, they can be a bit tricky, but the answers are in his PowerPoints. Tests are not bad, but you definitely need to study.
Dees is a great choice for BIOL1107. His lectures are clear and funny, and a lot of lecture consists of practice problems which are similar to tests. The tests are somewhat difficult, so you have to really pay attention to the lecture questions to do well. He also gives practice exams which are helpful. Very funny as well!
He's not easy, but he's very helpful if you ask him. I like going to his class the most
Dees is the best professor you're gonna get for this class, he's witty and nerdy but you grow to love him. You must go to class bc the slides are very dry. He does 3-4 tophats per class. He has five exams, the fifth one is the final and it is NOT cumulative, thank God. If you put the work in to understand, then you'll get an A.
This class is very hard and he does not make it any easier. I would not recommend him unless you want to teach yourself. I struggled learning all the material and I ended up having to get a tutor. I know people who did everything they could and still failed every exam. He is not lenient at all and doesn't answer questions clearly at all.
Everyone claims that his course if easy, but that is wrong. The Biology content that is taught is hardly even tested. All the questions on the exams are composed of his trick question and nothing related to conceptional things. I thought I was completely done with math, but every exam he finds a way to incorporate some bs math question.
This class is definitely harder than I thought, as the tests are full of application questions, but overall, Professor Dees made it so much better. He is funny and is very knowledgable on what he is teaching. Definitely go to class because he does participation questions and he says much more than what he puts on the slides. Tests are worth a ton!
tests count for 70% and are overly difficult/puts so many trick questions! he will do easy examples in class and then make the tests 10x harder. class is like 200 people and no TAs, so he can hardly clarify questions if confused. I studied hard, made100s on all the quizzes and assignments, went to every class and still did poorly on tests.
Overall would not recommend if you are wanting an A. Tests are 70% of your grade. Not much homework very test heavy. Got 90s or above on all the practice quizzes, but still managed to do poorly on exams. Expected to apply concepts when given little notes. I also went to office hours and review sessions and still did pretty poorly in this class.
Between the class questions and practice exams, he basically tells you 90% of what's going to be on every exam. They're just different versions of the same questions. Homework is minimal, but you have to go to class every day. He has his own readings for some things, which were helpful, but I wish he had them for everything.
I really loved Professor Dees and his teaching style, but the tests were definitely difficult, and that's most of what you're graded on. For each test, there are 4 lectures, a practice exam, and practice quizzes which really prep you for the exam. The exams were each 25 questions and 50 minutes so it's pretty easy to speed through them.
Dr. Dees is an amazing professor!!! His class is pretty straight forward if you pay attention and he's the funniest professor I've ever had. Not much out of class work: weekly quizzes that are 10 questions and you get 2 tries, and studying but other than that everything is in class. He uses tophat and it's for completion not accuracy.
Biology 1107 was extremely difficult for some reason. The content was very easy but the way Dees tested it was difficult. Make sure to do the optional reading it helped out alot
SO AMAZING. This class wasn't "easy", but its structure and his teaching style make it great. He is so hilarious, and really tries to make the content easier to understand. If you didn't take AP Bio in high school it may be a bit harder, but like I said its doable as long as you try. I'll miss his email sign offs :(
Professor Dees was amazing! He is so intelligent. His tests are a bit tricky (all 25 MC), and you really must know the material before going into the test, but it is manageable if you work for it. Take Dees over any other professor!
dees was a goofy professor, especially in his email taglines. the content can get a little dull but he was good at explaining and made the material super accessible and well laid out. his tests were not too bad if you study for them a bit, and he has an in-class participation grade but it's just completion which is easy. very laid back and nice guy
Dees was a very nice and funny professor but his tests were very hard. Although he gives practice tests that help a little I would recommend using the optional reading and possibly science guyz if you want an A.
Interesting man, here's what you need to know. 5 exams, 70% of your grade. Pretty tough and resemble math tests. No textbook used, so practice TopHat (used for attendance, very similar to the real test!) questions and review lecture slides. Tests are basically just stat questions so I'm not sure how much ScienceGuyz helped me out
Dees was a great professor! The slides alone aren't enough to learn from so it's important to show up. If you study TopHat questions and take notes, the exams aren't too bad. They were styled so either you knew the answer or you didn't. As long as you study at least a day or two in advance, it's not hard for an A and a fun and interesting class!
Here's the truth. He is a really good professor super cool and all, but those tests can play with your mind. Lots of trick questions. Do the optional reading, study outside of class, and go to office hours. If you're taking hard courses along with this one and hoping for an easy A with minimal study time. I would honestly say take another teacher!
I really enjoyed going to his class, as he made it interesting. There were weekly quizzes and that was the only homework. My issue was his test questions were so oddly worded and confusing that are a lot of hypothetical situations that only make sense to him. Without a book, I only had my notes with minimal other resources to study with
I transferred to UGA and straight up failed the first exam. I talked to him a few times for advice, and he really believed I could do it. I recovered all the way to a B+, so I will always appreciate him.
It was a fair class. Exams were a mix of easy and difficult questions and were all multiple choice. I really enjoyed going to class but had a lot of anxiety with the exams. I recommend compared to other options for 1107.
I genuinely can't say enough nice things about Dr. Dees. Attendance is mandatory and is based on TopHat questions. Don't worry though you probably won't get bored. His lectures are engaging and there's useful activities to break it up. I also recommend visiting office hours. If you come to him with a question he is nice and won't leave you hanging.
I love Dr. Dees. He's an amazing professor and I remember looking at the syllabus and being intimidated that tests make up 70% of your grade but his tests are straightforward and covered by the lectures, the quizzes, and the tophat questions. If you come to class, you are guaranteed a good grade and his lectures are actually interesting.
I really loved Dr. Dees and wish he taught 1108, too. Just go to class, pay attention, and review the in class questions he does and you'll succeed. Definitely do no expect him to do much explaining if you missed class. He lets you see what you got wrong from each test but it's not much help because the final is not cumulative.
I was scared that this class was going to be really hard like AP Bio but it was not at all. He posts the powerpoints the day before class so it gives you time to brace yourself. I skimmed over the power points before class, did the tophat questions in advance, made quizlets, and got pretty good test scores. The tests are also MC. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
I really love professor Dee, the way he explains the materials is very straight to the point and easy to understand. Homework is some take home quizzes but you can take it as many time as you want so it a guaranteed 100. tests are tricky but as long as you read carefully you will do good. if you do bad in this class, is really on you ToT
One of my favorite professors EVER. He knows the perfect way to keep you engaged and presents information in a way that is easy to understand. Tests are a little difficult, but he gives you the exact information that will be on it, so if you study, you will do fine. Attendance is mandatory but he's so engaging that I don't mind.
Your whole grade pretty much depends on your test grades and tests are made to trick you intentionally. He's really sweet tho and super funny. He genuinely cares about students and wants you to succeed and tries to help you. BUT you have to work hard and if biology doesn't come easy to you, take another professor.
The course was test-heavy, but the discussion questions and practice quizzes given throughout the semester helped a lot so long as you study. There was no textbook, but rather, tophat questions that were constantly discussed. Make sure you study after every week and you should be fine (suggestion: use flashcards).
nice, funny guy. its very math/stat heavy for some reason. his tests are 30 mcq but they're tricky. grade basically depends only on tests
The optional reading is not optional, read that and you will do fine.
Dr. Dees was absolutely hilarious and such a good teacher. He uses variations of practice quiz questions, practice test questions, and in class questions on the test, so I never found his tests too difficult at all. Definitely better than the other biology teachers here.
Dr. Dees is seriously so amazing!! This class is very test heavy, with 5 of them, each weighing 15% of your final grade. But, on the positive side, there's no homework and you only have one online quiz every weekend over the content from the week but they're relatively easy and you have unlimited attempts.
Dees is a very good bio professor. There is no short answers on tests, which in my opinion was helpful. Try and attend class as much as you can, lectures can be hard to catch back up on. Definitely read the optional reading. Dees is super funny and sends hype emails the night before exams.
the class is a hit or miss depending on learning style. for me, i learned well via his lectures, weekly quizzes, and optional readings. the workload is relatively light (at home quiz once a week, 5 exams per semester, and in class top hat questions). your grade is dependent on your exam scores, but exams questions are very similar to assignments.
Dr.Dees is an amazing professor! I liked the way he lectures way more than other bio professors. Tophat questions are pretty helpful and he doesn't use textbooks. As long as you show up to class and do your work, you should be fine.
Great instructor who gives entertaining lectures. Your grade is basically your exams-- so if you don't like that, look into another instructor. Study tophat and do the reading.
This class was very hard, my friends in Armstrong got much better grades than we did. Tests were hard and lectures were boring. He is a very nice guy, but the material is hard.
Awesome professor. Is very thorough during lectures and goes at a pretty slow pace so nothing was ever overwhelming. Tests are a bit difficult sometimes, but all questions are based on class content. He prepares you extremely well and give lots of good practice. Also he's just a nice and funny guy.
Fantastic and very fun professor. Super easy class as long as you pay attention to lectures. Take him if you can!
Dr. Dees is an absolutely amazing professor. He explains the information really well and is very willing to help you understand the information. While his teaching is great his tests can be a little tricky and hard. He also doesn't give any extra credit assignments. Attendance is mandatory and you will have to buy Tophat (~$25.) Highly recommended.
He's good in the classroom but if you ever contact him outside he can be rather rude. I thought this was just me but it turns out a lot of people had this issue. There were five tests that were medium difficulty but enough questions that it felt balanced. He's a good teacher if you're already good at bio...less so if you struggle
He is a G. He is funny. Good lectures. Hard classes and difficult tests. Focus. Good Prof.
Dr. Dees is a great, funny, and extremely intelligent prof. His lectures are very valuable, but you won't do good on the tests if you don't prepare adequately. His tests (in my opinion) are easier than Dr. Armstrong's tests. As long as you study for his tests you'll be fine. Also, the final exam is just the unit 5 exam, which is pretty helpful imo.
Everyone praises Dees, but I found my experience with him quite mid. I think people confuse being funny with being a good teacher. I learned far more from an outside tutor at ScienceGuys than I did in lecture. Exams are on the more difficult side, but redo the class questions and eLC quizzes and understand the WHY behind them to do well.
jonathan dees is one of the funniest and most caring profs i've ever had. although the content is super hard, he makes it very engaging and does his best to help the class understand the most he can. the content is very hard and the tests are too but all of his tests are multiple choice unlike other biol1107 profs
Dr. Dees is one of the best professors I've had at UGA. He is insanely funny and does a good job of making the information in lecture fun and memorable. The test can be kind of hard, but compared to most other stem classes, it's not that difficult. Rearrange your schedule any way you have to and take Dr. Dees' class.
The best professor! He explains the material in such a clear and understandable way. The tests are multiple choice only which is so nice. Class is mandatory but we get three absences. Would 100% take again.
Dr. Dees is the most fun and engaging professor I have taken so far in my 2 years at UGA. The content of the course could be considered difficult by some, but he makes it very easy to understand. Attendance is mandatory and affects your grade for the unit. The exams are pretty easy if you attend class regularly.
He's a good teacher and really funny but the wording of his tests makes it so difficult, no matter how well you learn the content. Lectures, office hours, and khan academy/amoeba sisters will save your grade.
He's a good professor. Attending lectures are really helpful, but you can miss a class or two each unit and still get full participation points. Very test heavy, but if you review the Tophat and practice test you should be fine, but make sure to get full points in all other portions of your grade. I recommend this class over Armstrong for sure!
Dees is the worst teacher I have ever had coming through UGA. His lectures were very simple and straightforward, but then exams were much way too difficult since there were so many concepts he never covered or even mentioned. And the optional readings are not at all optional if you want good grades. The most unfair and unsympathetic teacher ever
Having taken AP Bio (but did not get the credit) I found this class to be fairly easy. Tests are multiple choice and include concepts from lectures, discussion questions, and practice test that are given in class. Dees is a pretty good lecturer; he doesn't really call on people and he tries to keep class as engaging as possible.
TAKE DEES! He barely gives assignments, the only assignments we received were weekly online quizzes with unlimited attempts, you're also graded on attendance from TOPHAT questions, and as long as you have 80% attendance you're good, his course is test heavy with test accounting for 70% of your grade, its an easy class to pass, just study for tests!
Dees is a good professor overall, very nice and funny. He talks at a rather slow pace compared to Armstong, and his lectures can be kinda boring at times. However, the main problem is that your grade solely depends on the tests since the category is worth 75%. Not fun.
Take Dees. Great guy, funny, and always available and present in office hours. If you do badly on the first exam, get help immediately!!! It is the same structure and difficulty throughout the entire semester, and I had a really hard time with the way they were set up. If you aren't a natural science brain, beware. Tutoring and office hours help.
Was so scared to take this class but ended up okay!! Quizzes, practice exams, and tophat questions are all things that you can easily get 100s for. Review those three things before each test and this will prepare you immensely. The wording in practice questions is basically IDENTICAL to the test. No need for science guyz, he gives you all you need!
Definitely take Dr. Dees over Armstrong. I had to study for his tests for multiple days but ended up ok. As long as you go to class and take good notes you will be fine. I also strongly recommend science guyz because the practice exams prepared me for the real tests.
Dr. Dees is a sweet person and I enjoyed the lectures until I got my test grades back. Tests are 75% of your grade so you have to be a strong test taker to do well. Tests are multiple choice but very tricky. Homework assignments are easy but don't reflect the test material. I would consider other professors if test taking is not your strong suit.
Definitely take Dees! If you have any bio background knowledge the content won't be difficult. He is super nice and his lectures are straightforward. Review all the practice work because it's basically IDENTICAL to the test. The one problem is that your grade solely depends on tests (the category is worth 75% and the tests aren't many questions).
He uploads his lectures ahead of class and explains more during class. Attendance is mandatory through tophat. Tests are 75% and there are 5 equally weighted exams, none are dropped. There are 30 mc on each exams. Quizzes and homework are very easy. Final isn't cumulative. I had him at 8am and only fell asleep once so he's not that boring.
Lecture slides are uploaded ahead of class, but you need to come to class because lots of additional info is discussed that arent in slides. Lectures are engaging. Funny personality. Review his homework and tophat questions because they are nearly identical to the exams. Amoeba Sisters videos help if there are certain things that are confusing too
Dr. Dees is a good lecturer and often adds a comedic twist. While attendance is not required, I would definitely recommend coming. During class he uses Tophat to ask students questions and then thoroughly explains the questions. Every single question you see on the test is in some way similar to a question from HW or Tophat. Take him!
Dr. Dees was a surprisingly engaging lecturer despite his seemingly monotonous voice. He does require Top Hat for his class, but it is based on participation, not accuracy.
I really enjoyed biology with Dr. Dees. 75% of grades are exams, which are pretty difficult but doable. The other 25% of grades are assignments that are all either participation grades or he gives you unlimited attempts to do. Dees is pretty funny and his pre-posted lectures are super easy to follow. DO THE OPTIONAL READINGS!!
Great professor and funny! His exams are 30 questions multiple choice and the last question is usually a freebee biology joke. Review the tophat questions and practice quizzes because the exam questions are basically identical. Overall, not super difficult but try not to miss any class because you need to take notes on his lecture!!!
Dr. Dees had engaging lectures that taught the content well. He assigns weekly online quizzes with unlimited retakes and thats about it for homework. Your grade primarily depends on tests but there are 5 so you have plenty of time to figure out how to study. If you study his slides, top hat questions and quiz questions you should be good.
I personally struggled with content but the content that is given is on the exam. He is funny and does offer lots of office hours for questions. Do good on the exams in order to do good in class as the exams are worth 75% of the final grade. He works with you if you show effort and promise to succeed.
Powerpoints are dry so I would recommend going to majority of classes. Test weigh a lot but are MC. Make sure to read questions very carefully as tests are very application-heavy! Study material inside and out before tests and practice as much as possible. Challenging but rewarding and interesting class
Great teacher with decent lectures and examples. He posts optional readings for the tests which are key to doing well.
Jonathan Dees is a very intellectual and funny professor. Attendance is mandatory which he tracks through TopHat, but you only need 80% of participation to earn full credit. The exams can be a bit tricky, but if you practice TopHat questions, you'll be fine. Make sure to do your optional reading, it helps A LOT.
I. love. Dr. Dees. He is so funny and very clearly lays out the information during the lectures. Lectures are very engaging. Makes me excited to continue on a STEM track. Tests can be difficult, but as long as you study, you'll be alright.
Professor Dees is just about perfect. The class was fun and not particularly difficult. Dees is an engaging lecturer and there was not a ton of homework. Weekly quizzes, but you can retake until you get 100. Test questions are taken straight from the slides.
Great teacher, lectures aren't boring. Exams are kind of difficult, but most of the questions are taken straight from the practice questions and quizzes.
Just a great Prof.
Great lectures. Tests were all multiple choice and the questions came straight from class and homeworks. Nothing shock us the wrong way. Super light work load. Just take good notes and you will do well. Practice all the in-class, pactice exam, and homework questions before test day and you will do well.
Dr. Dees is an incredible professor. I don't have enough good things to say about him. Not only is he hilarious, but you can tell how much he cares about his students. The content is tough (as expected), but he explains it so well and is avalible outside of class. He's just an all around great teacher and great person.
Dees is THE GOAT of UGA Biology. Very clear teacher, great charisma. The tests were all multiple choice. Gives homework assignments that are actually like the test. I wish all UGA professors were as good as him.
I love jonathan so much
Is this a math class or a science class? My main issue is that A LOT OF questions are not even biology content, they're just...probability calculations. Some questions are poorly worded. I also feel he is trying too hard to be funny sometimes. I like that he posts slides, answer key to practice exams, and lets you see your answers to quizzes on eLC
Bad news is that you really have to go to class, but it's very doable for an A. He's also super helpful outside of class if you can find him.
I liked his teaching style and the material covered was pretty basic and interesting. He does a good job at keeping students engaged in class, however is very different in lecture and in office hours.
The class is very straight forward and SUPER manageable. Science Guyz is definitely not needed!! I never had any issues with exams, where they are near identical to his slides, practice quizzes, & practice exams. Take him if you can!!
take him. just do it
Super good. just take notes and read powerpoint. you'd have to try and fail: he's good at lecturing, if a little slow.
Loved Dr. Dees so much!! My friends and I sat in the very front of the room and he actually ended up feeling like a friend to us!! Not a lot of info on his slides so take lots of notes on what he says. Also, pay attention to the topics of his exam reviews because they will show up on the exam
Professor Dees was a really kind individual, but I personally struggled heavily in terms of content. I tried to stay with the class, but my exams never really reflected my effort. There are 4 exams and little homework, make it test heavy, which is part of the reason I withdrew. He's a kind soul, I just wasn't compatible with his teaching style.
Great professor. You need to go to lecture and take notes. Uploads slides, but the important information is what he says or writes on the slides in class. Sometimes felt a little slow
Grade is only based basically on four exams and none are dropped but he is super funny. Just make sure to show up to class because most of the exam content is not explicitly on his slides. 10/10 professor. Top tier email crafting skills.
Dees is great and caring. The tests are similar to in/out of class questions so go to class and study the questions and you'll be fine. IMO he doesn't explain the best, so I had to go online for better explaining. Def recommend thou.
Science is really not my thing, but Dees has been really helpful this semester. The lectures are super important to attend since most test questions come from lectures, practice exams, and top-hat. He is very knowledgeable, and explains well. Office hours were helpful; he helped me with test taking strategies and concepts I struggled with.
I love Dr. Dees! You have to show up to class because he goes more into-depth about his slides, but he explains things very well! Just show up and listen, and you'll barely have to do things outside of class. He is genuinely the best! Has homework quizzes occasionally, but they have unlimited attempts! 80% attendance is required for full credit!
attendance is part of your grade. tests make up a large portion of your final grade, but if you review the tophat questions and the optional readings he writes they're easy A's. Weekly quizzes can be retaken an unlimited number of times only counting the highest grades.
I don't think much more can be said for Dr. Dees than what is already there, but he is an amazing professor that truly cares about his students and does his best to teach the material. The class is not hard as long as you attend lectures and pay attention.
Best teacher, although a lot of the tests are based off of his in class lectures. He explains things very well and cares about you understanding the material, but he doesn't have annotated slides, so take notes and pay attention in class! Overall such a good teacher and tests aren't too bad.
Dees was one of the best professors I've had. He's very well rounded and approachable when you have questions. He provides all the material and practice you need to succeed in his class. The only negative is that he doesn't post his lecture annotations (which is a good chunk of the material), so its very essential to attend every class.
Goat. If you need bio take him. There's not a better prof and if you need help on anything email him/go to office hours. Overstudy for tests and you'll do great on them.
Great professor who seems to know what to emphasize the most, as well as being really relaxed with the class. Tests are 70% of the grade, practice tests are 15%, and attendance through TopHat is 15%. There are five tests, and they're all based off of lecture material. Tests are 1/3 practice test, 1/3 TopHat, and 1/3 whatever he creates.
I would recommend taking another teacher instead of Dees since he is very lecture and test heavy. He's also very intimidating and doesn't really help when going over test corrections.
Class is really big and not easy, but he is very nice if you talk to him. 9/10
A great professor who truly cares about student learning. Attend lectures, take notes, and use unstuckstudy ai - it really helps with test prep. Tests are tough but manageable if you stay on top of the material.
super chill dude, although a little intimidating one on one. be ready to study a LOT. tests are 70% of your grade and he loves math problems so get ready to study hard.
you will definitely need to study, but he is such a good teacher!! super funny and helpful. go to office hours always.
By far the BEST bio teacher I could've chosen. He makes it so easy to enjoy Biology, and as long as you pay attention in class (def review the practice quizzes and optional things too) it's so easy to get an A! I didn't study a whole lot and still go an A on the test! He's hilarious (you'll see in the emails) 10000% take Dees! FYI he uses Top Hat
I understand that some people like him because he's personable and "funny", but that doesn't mean he's a great person. He honestly is pretty rude when you try to email him. His tests are easy, but after the first test he puts more and more tricky questions. His tone is also pretty monotone during lectures. He's not awful, but he could be better.
Please don't take this professor. He may be funny, but he's really rude when asking questions at office hours or through email. He cannot teach, I repeat, he cannot teach. For almost all the tests I've taken, half of the lecture is barely on the exam. I'm surviving off my knowledge of AP Bio.
Honestly biology has never been this hard for me until now. Every unit I think I understand and then comes the test with weirdly worded and confusing questions. Quizzes have unlimited attempts which is nice but they're literally only 15% of your grade. Test are 70% so that's all that matters.
It's a hard class but I think he does a good job. It's so big too. He spends two hours after classes helping me and my friends, and I've been doing better since I started going. Things don't really click in class, but he always answers questions later.
It's not the best class, but it's doable, and he's better than the other options. I tried two of them, and yeah, no.
Tests are big grade. He has some solid dry humor, lectures are long and monotone. Decent professor, just clutch up on exams.
johnny dees is great and a funny guy! the class itself is tough, but he makes it a littttttle bit better! i would def take him again. study the powerpoints. no homework, but the occasional take home practice quiz, which you can do unlimited times. graded a lot by attendance and class participation (top hat), so def try to not miss any lectures!
Dr. Dees is amazing. He cares about his students, lectures at a good pace, and is quite funny. I genuinely looked forward to his classes. His class is also not very difficult either. You still need to study but the tests are very reasonable. If you have to take BIOL 1107, take Dees.
Dees is a great professor, and I never had any problems with him. He teaches very straightforward and is organized. The exams can be a bit difficult, but if you study you'll do fine. I'd def recommend him
The top hat questions during class all show up on the exams, he sometimes goes through them too fast. He is very funny though
He is funny , yes but i've never struggled so much in biology. I put in countless hours of studying for the tests and continue to make grades on the test that don't reflect my knowledge. Majority of what he covers in lecture is not on the exam and exams are 70% of your grade. There is no opportunity for extra credit. He cannot teach.
Highly overated and quite frankly he is not that funny. Take someone else because while material may not be hard he makes the test extremely difficult and they are a huge portion of your grade! Every test question should NOT be a trick question! He also isn't very helpful in office hours and can be quite snarky.
Overall I give this professor a 2 out of 5. This professor made this subject so much harder than it needed to be. He would quickly go through the lectures and not really dive any deeper into the material or simplify it for those who did not understand it. The worst professor I had my freshman year at UGA!
You need to go to class but he mostly teaches the tests. All of the class questions are on the exams in a different form. 8am is a little brutal.
Dr. Dees is a great professor. He's funny, his lectures are all solid. Exams are pretty hard though. I would definitely recommend doing the "optional " readings and going to office hours to prepare yourself.
He is awesome. Such a nice man, class is difficult, but that's expected. Take his class genuinely only good things about him as a professor.
If you're ready to put in work then you can get through this class easy. Even with like 1000 students he really does care about your well-being and always invites students to visit his office hours. Fantastic emails als!
Professor Dees is a wonderful option for BIOL 1107. The class was graded on homework, in-class top hat questions, and five tests. The homework assignments have unlimited attempts, and if you attend class, you are guaranteed 100% on tophat questions. Review the notes, tophat questions, homework, and the optional reading on exams. Highly recommend!
This man is awsome. He cares a lot about his students and you can tell that through his lectures. Wonderful and funny man, especially his emails before exams. You do have to study for his class and it is lecture heavy but as long as you attend lectures and go do all of the practice he gives you, getting a B shouldn't be difficult.
Dr. Deesaster is my goat. Really chill dude with great lectures. His tests are tough, you really have to apply previous knowledge but other than that its good. Show up to minimum 80% of classes for 100 in attendance, quizzes are oddly hard but you have a few days and unlimited tries to do them. Expect an ominous email from him on test days.
LOVE Dr. Dees! Some awkward moments here and there, and he answers questions his own way (sometimes with no clear answer). Best way to describe him: that funny uncle that is a little quiet. Tests are big portion of final grade so take notes (he provides his slides, but unless you go to class, you will never see the extra notes he takes) and study!
Dr. Dees is honestly the sweetest man. He GENUINELY cares about each and every one of his students. His tests were not hard for me, but studying was necessary. Homework assignments were more difficult than the tests but were unlimited attempts. As long as you go to 80% of class, you can get a free 100 for 15% of your grade. If you can, TAKE HIM.
He's overrated. His teaching style is subpar. Need to study very hard for tests. Going to class and taking notes isn't enough. Don't waste time in office hours, he's very snarky when answering questions and makes you feel bad for not knowing info. Find an easier prof if you can. Yes he's funny, but not enough to suffer thru his class again.
Most of the grade in the class are the tests, but honestly as long as you study, you should be fine. He is pretty good at lecturing and always tries to help. The practice quizzes are pretty easy too and there are unlimited attempts.
It's a HARD class, and sometimes i'm not even sure why it's hard or why i liked it, but i did.
Super great guy and love him so much! The course itself is very difficult and you will have to study but going to class and smaller assignments help your grade a lot!
Dees is the GOAT. The only reason I got a B+ was because I was horrible at Bio. He made our final exam online with unlimited attempts because he felt he was behind on his teaching. This is not an easy A but definitely the best that's offered. He genuinely cares about his students which is rare in the science department.
Dees is a super nice teacher who really does care. He explains concepts very well with slides, demonstrations, examples, drawings, etc. The tests are difficult as they are very application-based, but not impossible. Study the practice quizzes and Top Hat questions. If I were looking to take a BIO1107 class I would definitely choose Dees.
Professor Dees is very funny and actually teaches instead of just reading off of a PowerPoint. However, tests are 70% of the course grade along with Tophat participation and two online quizzes per unit and group review tests. If you review all the material provided, you should do well on the tests. Great for a first biology class.
The professor was great, he made the topic interesting and presented the information well. He has a good sense of humor, his emails always provide a good chuckle. However 70% of the grade is dependent upon 5 tests.
Dr. Dees is amazing, take him. He makes sure you understand the lectures, with a very engaging class, with 5 discussion questions a class. Very test heavy, but when he posts the optional reading and practice, DO THEM. One practice quiz every week or so, but don't sweat it, you can take it as many times as possible.
Lectures were well organized, attendance is not technically mandatory but you can't miss more than a certain amount of classes. Practice questions are done each lecture so better to go anyways. 1-2 practice quizzes for each unit, as well as an in class practice test before the exam. Tests are pretty fair but you definitely need to study.
Dr Dees does not go into enough detail with his lectures, so outside help is a must. His optional reading are super helpful but are also 20+ pages long, so it will take a lot of time. His emails are funny but that is pretty much all of the personality he has.
Dr. Dees is easily one of the best professors at UGA. This man is the most caring and qualified teacher that genuinely cares about your success. He will sit and work with you until you understand (despite having over 1k+ students). He takes the time to look through your exams with you EVERY UNIT. He is well-respected for a reason.
The tests carry a lot of the grade weight and have weird math problems. Attendance is recommended b/c he does not annotate the slides (some of the test questions are replicas of the slides with different wording). Beware of the grades in the reviews (Fall 2024 semester) b/c he gave out free 100s for the last test (conditional/one-time thing).
Dees is a great dude and really caring. People that rate him bad have never taken uga science classes. No matter what science you take it'll be difficult, but he's a sweet accessible guy who truly just wants you to succeed. You'll need to put in work outside the class (maybe get the science guyz packet) but ultimately he's the best option for 1107.
Exams make up a big part of your final grade, but the class is enjoyable and Dr. Dees is very passionate about biology and tries to explain certain concepts very creatively. Attendance is encouraged as there are in-lecture questions that show attendance but also help contextualize concepts.
tests make up like 70% of your grade but they're all multiple choice. he is so funny and he sends the best emails.
Super nice and approachable! Syllabus says attendance isn't mandatory, but it is. You're graded via participation on TopHat in class, so make sure you have a subscription and a device. Tries his best to make lectures engaging. Tests are difficult b/c they're conceptual, but review notes and the practice quizzes and you'll be fine.
He's very nice and funny, attendance and participation is tracked through Tophat and discussion questions in the app.
Dr. Dees is the SWEETEST. His lectures are so funny and he provides his slides after each class, which is helpful for studying. His tests are VERY hard and are worth 70% of your grade. Don't be fooled by the syllabus' claim of attendance being optional because it's not. Overall, doable class but don't expect an easy A.
He is a great guy!!! Heads-up, his tests are kinda written like hes trying to trick you. To everyone taking him, GO TO CLASS, ESPECIALLY use the practice quizzes, and triple-check ALL your answers!!
The class is very test heavy and the tests are often harder/more confusing than the quizzes and slides. You are allowed to miss some class, but showing up to every class is necessary to learn the material imo. The quizzes have unlimited attempts. Dr. Dees is super funny, caring, and hilarious. You can tell he wants the best for his students.
Dr. Dees had over 1,000 students but still made time if you need help. Take his class for Bio 1107 and GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. His questions are kinda hard to get the hang of but office hours really help understand his thought process and how you should think about the questions. He's also more funny in office hours. Best option for 1107.
I think people mistake being "funny" with being an actual good lecturer. His tests were like too tricky for an introduction class, and like you could try super hard but still do bad. Most people hype him up but are still getting b's in the class so please don't be misled. It's not like the easiest class/the nicest professor you'll ever have, trust.
This class was extremely difficult and the tests were challenging. Even if you study DAYS in advance, the tests are tricky and meant for you to be confused. He is kinda helpful in office hours, but there's too many people for him to get to know you. If you miss class, you have to get notes from other students cause the slides provide no info.
I think his exams are the biggest issue. They're doable after you get the hang of it, but they are worth too much imo. Everything else is good though, so overall i liked biology.
Dees was a good professor. I would not suggest you miss any of his lectures because he incorporates kind of challenging math in his content. I've gotten A's on all of my tests, but it took a good amount of studying. Use top hat questions, practice quizzes, and practice exams to study. Usually a question from his optional practice appears on tests.
If you're decent at bio, you're passing this class. Attendance is mandatory, but if you complete 80% of the TopHat questions during the lectures, you will get full credit. On that note, exams are nearly identical to the TopHat questions you see in class, with very few adjustments. Homework consists of practice quizzes on eLC with unlimited attempts
Everyone seems to love him, but I found him insufferable. He's over hyped and his test were too tricky for an intro course. He passive aggressive and overall kind of a rude through email, if I could go back in time I would not have taken him.
Professor Dees is one of the best professors at UGA. He is incredibly understanding and caring, and will answer any questions during lecture. The class itself Is moderately difficult, but he makes it bearable. The tests can get hard and make sure to do all available practice.
Dees is such a funny guy. I did not enjoy the class by any means, I'm not too fond of bio but the class was fairly easy and he made the lectures and tests as fun as you can make bio.
While this class may not be easy, he makes it manageable. Study the unit's TopHat questions, group quiz, and eLC quizzes as they have similar type questions to what will be on the actual test.
Dr. Dees is such a funny and sweet professor. Yes his test were hard and his questions were tricky but he did his best to help us understand the material. After the first 2 test, you kinda get the hang of it. GO TO CLASS AND OFFICE HOURS!!!! (they're like mini review sessions). Quizzes=unlimited attempts, Test=all multiple choice. PRACTICE & REVIEW
I had a good experience in Dees' class this semester. I did not do a stellar job on his exams but I also never failed one. Study the material so that you know the stuff in and out because exams were pretty conceptual. I also asked him a few questions during the semester and he explained to me well and walked around when we did TopHat questions.
Take Professor Dees if you can! The class is fairly easy and is a relatively fun class.
Any science in college is going to be difficult, but Dr. Dees is such a funny guy (get ready for pre-exam hype emails). Be sure to pay attention to any and all practice questions he gives and you will do fine.
Biology is hard, but Dees did his best to make lectures engaging and understandable. Definitely one of the best STEM professors at UGA. Great at explaining things and also just a great guy. Tests are hard for sure, but pay attention in class, take notes, and have questions, you'll be fine. Only reason I got a B was that I bombed one exam.
Dees is a kind and down to earth professor, he explains the concepts that are going to be on the test pretty well. Tests worth 70% of the grade collectively and doing poorly on one of them could mess you up. But they're pretty easy to study for IMO! Never went to office hours bc he had a ton of students and tbh I didn't really feel I needed them.
He was really overwhelmed this semester because he had to teach 1,000+ students, but I think he did his best and gave us multiple opportunities to get a good grade in the class. He's a sweet guy and a bit socially awkward irl, but his emails are pretty funny. His tests were really hard though. Make sure to pay attention to the details.
This semester may not be the best to judge by, but he's understanding, caring, and will put in effort to help you if you reach out. Biology was tough for me, but I regret not going to his office hours, as I might've done better. Not an easy breeze though, you've gotta put in the work on your own time.
He is a great professor with a good sense of humor. Test are hard and tricky tho. TopHat quizzes are on participation basis but they are useful. There are also quizzes in eLC with unlimited attempts to better understand the topic. I would recommend reading slides before lectures and going through extra material he posts, it helped me feel prepared.
This was the best class I have taken. He was a great professor and his lectures are interesting. The tests are difficult, but if you take time to study you will do great. He gives you a lot to study with too and office hours are super helpful.
Dr. Dees is an amazing professor for Biology! He is very clear about what's needed for the class and his lectures are enjoyable. The tests are very similar to the Tophat questions he does in class and are multiple choice with 30 questions each. Dr. Dees is really funny and sends the best emails. 10/10 would recommend taking him :)
Dees has a great personality. However, BIO1107 is very lecture and application heavy and it can sometimes can be difficult to follow his ideas in class. Exams were worth 70% of the final grade- though not much else counted as a grade during the course aside from periodic online (open-note, homework) quizzes.
loved him as a teacher, he definitely makes class fun. tests are difficult and you won't do well if you don't pay attention in lectures. i recommend going to office hours, they're super helpful.
Amazing professor! Honestly just pay attention in lectures and do the practice he assigns and you'll be fine in this course. Would 100% take again.
If you pay attention in the class, complete the homework, and study a little before every test, you will be just fine. While the tests count a lot towards the final grade, they are not overly difficult. Dr. Dees is hilarious and cares a lot about what he teaches (he also sends out the greatest hype emails before every test).
Not sure why he has such high ratings. He was very unhelpful I did well mostly because of help from TAs. He's not kind or hilarious... he literally yelled at me during a lecture. He's an okay teacher but he will not go above and beyond to help you understand tough concepts!
You need to be in class because he adds more to the slides then he posts on eLC. Tests are worth a large percentage of grade and they are very application based and meant to get you thinking.
I didn't appreciate him until I took more science classes, it only went downhill from there.
Dees cares about students' success. He is effortlessly funny and gives out material that will genuinely help prepare you for his exams, even if the category is worth 70% of the grade. There are assignments that you can retake as many times as you want with no penalty! Show up to class even if ppt is uploaded bc he uses TopHat and lectures to teach
Dr. Dees is a great professor. He doesn't give out a lot of work, the course is test heavy, but as long as you study on your own outside of class, you will do fine. He makes sure you really know the content and he is a genuinely caring person.
I'm gonna give it to you straight: Dees is a good professor, but by no means is he life-changing. You have to put in the hours for this class with studying and understand the concepts thoroughly. He sends very entertaining emails, but is very quiet and reserved in person. Coming from someone who got an A, take him if you are actually going to study
Dr. Dees was the perfect freshman bio professor! His lectures were a little boring at times but he had a lot on his plate this semester. Highly recommend as he and his team of TA's are very knowledgeable and helpful. Definitely go to the post-exam office hours and ask questions!!
I really enjoyed this course! Dees was overall good at explaining concepts and had resources to use if you wanted to understand the material more fully (optional readings). Practicing the quizzes, lecture questions, and optional practice allowed me to feel extremely prepared for the exam. Dees sends out funny emails too so very enjoyable class!
Best BIOL1107 professor. Tests were only multiple choice, and his lectures are very well organized. Only problem is attendance is necessary since his online notes don't contain much information.
Professor Dee's is an amazing professor. He cares about his students success in the class. I recommend going to the lectures because he explains everything in a very understandable way and has practice questions that help in class. You will need to put in work outside of class though. One of the best professors I have had, i definitely recommend .
He cares so much about his students and honestly is the best professor I've had so far. Also his lectures were really well thought out and if you study enough before the exams you should be alright!
Although I didn't get an A in this class, I didn't hate it--it wasn't Dees, I'm just bad at bio. His class is lecture heavy and graded solely on a couple online quizzes (w/ unlimited attempts) and tests. His emails are so silly. The only con to this class was that you have to do a LOT of studying outside of class if you want to maintain an A.
Didn't study a lot and still get an A. His quizzes are unlimited attempts and thats mostly all the homework. I love his emails! He's very nice when you need help too. Take him if you can.
His lectures were easy to understand, and he seemed to really enjoy teaching and willing to help his students.
Genuinely an amazing professor. His class was fairly easy as you put effort in towards studying. He gives quizzes with unlimited retries. His tests have about half of the questions that are either very similar to the ones from the homework and quizzes. He also sends hilarious emails before every exam. If you can take a class with him I Recommend.
His lectures were very clear and easy to understand. I went to his office hours and started to do a lot better on the tests and got an A in the class. Overall, he was really nice and a good professor.
His lectures are very clear. If you pay attention in class and study the material, it's an easy pass. Quizzes have unlimited tries and most of the exam questions end up being very similar to the ones from quizzes and Top Hat questions. Provides good study materials and resources, but you also have to find some on your own. He also loves memes
I love him so much. Best professor in the world, please take him. Class consists of literally just tests that can be easily studied for by reviewing his TopHat, lecture notes, and practice exam.
Dr. Dees was a decent professor. Exams were oddly worded, and lecture does not cover enough of the material. the "optional" reading is mandatory, and there is a lot of math involved in his tests. He loves fictional scenarios, and often it is hard to determine what to study. Office Hours were very convenient though and he is a funny, helpful guy.
If you go to class and study for the tests (use his optional reading), you will be fine. Super nice guy! Also, he uses TopHat for attendance and class engagement. I would recommend!
While the class itself is very hard, Professor Dees was a great teacher who I would definitely recommend for someone to take and is probably the best Biology 1107 teacher on campus.
BIO1107 is not an easy class in general, the material is very hard. However, Dees is a great professor and does a thorough job of explaining. The class definitely requires studying but that is expected with most STEM courses. Overall a very nice guy and a good teacher.
Jonathan Dees is a great teacher who explains lectures well and lets you know what is on the test. His emails are hilarious, but the class is very challenging. The tests are all multiple choice but are complicated questions.
Professor Dess is the best biology professor at UGA. Hilarious, helpful, and breaks things down easily. The only way you could fail this class is by not paying attention or putting in the effort. Super willing to help each student learn.
Whoever said that he explains things well is lying. He's a funny guy and knows what he is talking about but the material is confusing. The top hat and quizzes are only effective as practice if you already know how to do everything. Also, you are better off taking a voice recording in class because his lecture slides are pretty useless.
Great Guy, actually loves what he does and knows what he's talking about. Tests are straightforward, so just make sure you know your facts. Totally chill guy and wants you to do well and enjoy the class.
he was fine. nice and cares about the subject. i just don't love bio but his tests were chill and multiple choice with a bonus question at the end
dees has the most boring quiet voice and draws out his class to 75 minutes when it couldve been 30 im warning u now the reviews are lying his tests are so bad and do not follow the in class notes/lectures. he may be the best option for this class but he is still bad change your majors now. its not worth it.
Dr. Dees is THE holy BIOL1107 professor. If you're thinking of taking 1107 fight for your life to get him. Tips: get a recorder so you can take notes on his yapping, STUDY for the tests they are 70% of your grade and they tanked me hard, make friends with your lecture row and form a study group, dont stress abt hw you can do it multiple times.
It wasn't bad for a science class. I didn't hate going, and he's pretty nice.
40% of the grade is attendance, participation, and quizzes that you can retake many times. Test are worth 60%. It's just ahrd bc there is no extra practice so when I am studying I don't have that much to study. He also doesn't post is annotated notes after class so if yu miss something it's kinda hard.
Y'all already know Dees is a real one. His class is honestly really interesting (coming from a bio major lol) and not hard at all if you pay attention and study for the tests. The tests weren't too bad as long as you really look back through the notes and optional readings beforehand. His TAs were also super sweet and helpful. Highly recommend!
Dees does well to present the material each class, and a good bit of the period each day goes towards tophat questions which you're allowed to work with people around for. There are a few practice quizzes for each unit which are graded by accuracy but you have unlimited attempts. Altogether the class is not too bad if the content clicks
Take Dees!!! He explains the content great, and makes the class entertaining. There are weekly homework with unlimited attempts, which is great practice for tests. The tests are straightforward so study the content well, do the optional readings, and you will succeed! Definitely go to class, it's part of the grade and the slides aren't annotated.
Dees is amazing! He makes class enjoyable and his lectures are very detailed. You do have to go to class because he does TopHat questions & attendance. Practice quizzes for homework w unlimited attempts. 5 tests (no cumulative final). He doesn't post annotated notes after class, and these are important for tests. Def recommend!!
Love this silly guy, wish more teachers had attitudes like him. He has a great sense of humor. Tests/exams are HARD. Pay attention in lecture, take notes on the tophat questions, and look at the results from the group practice exam if you want to get good grades. Don't shop online white he's teaching because Chat GPT does NOT know.
Great professor. Really passionate about biology. As long as you put some sort of effort in, should be no problem in getting an A in the class. If you study the top hat questions and the group practice given, you will be just fine for exams. No final exam, just a unit exam given at the end of the year. Not a lot of grades so do well in hw.
Professor Dees was so wonderful. This was my first science class I took at UGA, and I can confidentially say... I have no regrets about choosing him to be my professor. The class is set up in a really great way, and Professor Dees is hilarious. His emails make you smile even when they are about a test coming up. Take him!
Dr. Dees gets the job done & is a nice guy. Very easy course w/ clear expectations - I feel like you could only do bad if you literally don't try at all... 10 quizzes for HW & TopHats every lecture but these do well providing practice questions for exams. No tricks but you need to do practice questions to do well. Take eLC quizzes many times
Dr. Dees is great at delivering quick, concise information. He can be a tad boring sometimes, but overall makes it as entertaining as possible by interacting with the students and making jokes. Dr. Dees is super smart and kind.
he is terrible. spare yourself.
I love this guy. Test are super easy, jokes are funny, and vibe is cool. He's my GOAT!
I would definitely recommend Professor Dees. He is a good lecturer and provides many practice questions that are similar to the test question difficulty level. I would also recommend Science Guyz if you want extra practice.
Dees is literally the goat. 1107 content can get a little difficult, especially if you haven't taken bio in a while. Nevertheless, Dees explains it well, his slides are simple and make sense, his top hat questions are for participation (study them before the test, they're similar to the test questions), and he is always happy to answer questions!
I thought that professor Dees did a great job of explaining the material clearly. I also thought that the exams were fair and that the in class work and homework prepared me well.
Dees is a great professor, and his slides and lectures are clear and easy to understand. Attendance is important and can affect your grade heavily if you skip more than around 2 times. The tests count for a lot (70%), but they are multiple-choice and easy to study for.
I took this class based on RMF rating. While I learned a lot and he is a good teacher, attendance mandatory like all STEM and he isn't the most caring prof. He's funny, but I've heard the other new prof is easier. If you do take him and go to class you'll do fine. Grade: 70% 5 exams, 15% TopHat, 15% practice quiz unlimited attempts. No final.
Dr. Dees, although very funny and makes learning biology simple to understand, wasn't a great class due to the fact that exams are worth 70% of your total grade. Everyone saying that he is so funny doesn't make up for his poor teaching. I would say focus on the TopHat questions and put 100% into this class, you will be fine just practice!!
Dr. Dees is a good professor, however the tests are difficult. There are also 5 exams, and each weigh heavily (worth 70% of your grade). To do well in this class you HAVE to practice, put in effort, and also show up to class because missing even one class will set you back.
10/10 no notes. Great lecturer, gave homework but not a lot and not too hard, "exam hype" emails are hilarious. It's not the easiest ever, but I just rewrote all of my notes to study the day before each exam and made A's on all of them.
Ngl I was kind of disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love his humor, emails, and overall demeanor but if you're like me and not good at test taking/have test anxiety I wouldn't take 1107 with him because exams are 70% of your grade. Besides that, the class is pretty light in amount of work, just make sure to study a lot.
BIO1107 with Dees is fine. Exams aren't easy, but the rest of the class is no problem. He tries to help me in class, or his helper does, and he was very nice the time I went to office hours. Recommend.
Dr. Dee's is a great professor and his emails are hilarious. The tests are difficult, and they're worth 70% of your grade. People sometimes say his lectures are boring, I personally think they're engaging. There are worksheets that you need to complete for 15% of your grade, and you need to complete them thoroughly. Overall, I recommend Dr. Dees.
Very overrated prof. He's not mean or anything, but the class is VERY TEST HEAVY. 70% of the grade is made up of 5 tests, which are extremely difficult, more than the class material. His grades were consistently lower than those of other professors in the same class. You must put in work outside of class! If youre not good with tests DONT take him!
Pretty overrated professor. He's not rude or unfair, but the class is extremely test-heavy, about 70% of your grade comes from 5 exams that are much harder than the actual course material. His average grades are consistently lower than other instructors for the same class. You'll definitely need to study a lot outside of class. TLDR: OVERRATED!
Dees is a great professor. His lectures are interesting and he is very humorous, especially in the emails he sends out (genuinely the highlights of my week.) Five exams are 70% of your grade though, so be prepared to study and try your best.
Dude is overrated. He's not boring, but the course relies heavily on tests. 5 of them make up 70% of your grade, and they're way more challenging than what's covered in class. His grades are lower than other professors teaching the same course. Be prepared to put in a lot of work outside of class. Dont take if youre not good with tests
Nice guy but super test-heavy. Five exams make up 70% of your grade, and they're much harder than the lectures suggest. His averages are always lower than other professors. Expect to do a lot of studying outside class. Not a good choice if you don't test well.
He's honestly not a bad professor, but man, his class is rough if you're not great at tests. Like, 70% of your grade is just five exams, and they're super hard. The material itself isn't terrible, but the tests go way deeper. You've gotta study a lot outside class. Cool dude, hard class.
Good guy I guess, but horrible teaching style. He'll teach you something and it'll be completely different to what are on the tests.Which sucks because 5 tests are 70% of your overall grade.Almost no practice other than some practice quizzes he gives.Dedicated all my study time towards that class and somehow that did not help. Not a great professor
Prof. Dees is not a good instructor. Firstly, there is not textbook, so the only resources you have are his powerpoints with very very little detail on them. He doesn't do a good job of explaining things in a well developed way. The exams make up 70% of the grade which is insane. Also, the lectures do not translate to the exams at all and are HARD!
Very test heavy and the tests are way more advanced than the lectures. Even with science guys this class is very difficult. If you do bad on one exam its very difficult to recover your grade.
Dr. Dees is great! His class is pretty easy, the lectures are pretty straight forward. His tests get slightly harder as the semester goes on and is 70% of your grade which sucks.
Tests are extremely hard and quizzes and lectures are not enough for the difficulty of his questions on test. If you take him make your own questions from the top hat questions he gives.
This class isn't very hard. Its definitely lecture heavy but he makes them interactive. If you miss a class it isn't the end of the world but I wouldn't recommend. Tests are 70% of your grade and the other stuff is easy to get a 100 on if you show up to class. Exams are just like the questions from class and practice exams.
His lectures go so much more in depth than his slides, so I would recommend going to class and locking in when he talks. He does a pretty good job teaching, but I recommend reading the reading guides he sends out with each unit as those go more in depth. You will definitely have to put in the work and study for his tests too as they are quite hard.
Dr. Dees is very funny and his lectures are very engaging. I learned a lot in this class. This course does have a lot of stressful tests though. Very clear that he cares though. Very smart guy.
Honestly dees is an amazing fun guy, and he goes through the lectures well. The tests, though are really hard and heavy, and I would not recommend this class to someone who is not a great test taker. You really need to think during these exams. The tests were too hard to be in a gen bio class.
Insanely good professor if you have the brainpower to fully lock in for an hour and 15 minutes. His lectures are very detailed; however, his slides are not. The slides he posts are too vague to help you study for exams, which are really hard. You HAVE TO go to class and TAKE HEAVY NOTES during lectures if you want to succeed in this course.
Get ready to lock in every class if you want to do well on tests. Otherwise, you're cooked. His slides are so vague so you can only do well on tests if you listen to his lectures. Tests are worth 70% of your grade so be prepared to have to get an A on every test if you want an A in the class. He doesn't provide enough practice either.
Professor Dees is really nice and funny but I must warn you that you MUST put in 110% into his class. The slides are vague and he doesn't provide enough information for how hard the tests are. Make sure to have study groups! Lastly, study wisely I have put like 3 hours and still got low grades so practice active recall and what you don't know :)
Dees is awful. Most of the class is graded soley by exams. The group worksheets were said to be "a participation grade", but he took away credit if you got a question wrong. He is not nice and does not care about his students. You are NOT allowed to email him at any time, and if you do, he does not have a nice response.
I love Dees. Teaches class really simply and minimal work outside of class.1 quiz at home with unlimited attempts almost every week. Exam every 3 weeks. Class is not hard, just do the quizzes and review tophat questions. Does a review day for participation the class before the exam (exam is exactly like it but multiple choice).
TAKE DR. DEES!! Biol 1107 was a super chill class with plenty of opportunity to get an A. The lectures weren't boring imo, because Dees is so funny and engaging. On the first day, I was a little worried bc he seemed a little robotic/monotonous, but I ended up loving him!!! It was very straightforward and he really prepares you to do good on exams
As a senior, I can say every science class at UGA is hard. This one is more doable than most though. You can do the homework as many times as you want and class is just participating without pressure to get everything right all the time. Exams have easy and hard questions, all multiple choice. Office hours can be crowded but he answers emails fast.
Dees is a hilarious guy and willing to help students but I found his lectures hard to follow and understand. The tophat questions are impossible to understand after just being introduced to the material in lecture. Exams are nearly impossible to prepare for so you seriously just have to hope for the best. Do yourself a favor a buy Science Guyz.
Dees was good overall, but sometimes I felt like he gave us questions about content we hadn't learned yet and could've done a better job describing it. But he gave practice quizzes with unlimited attempts that helped my grade a lot and the class was pretty easy except for tests. He can be tricky though and likes making you really think.
This class was definitely difficult, especially if you haven't taken AP bio. If you really study and put in the effort you should do ok. The quizzes and top hat are really helpful study tools and just like the test questions, so I'd really use those. Tests are worth a lot and definitely more difficult than they should be and he never curves
Class is super chill. You gotta show up for Tophat, but the lectures aren't boring and he explains everything very well. Gives a lot of practice questions that help for the tests which aren't bad at all. Funny dude, I really enjoyed this class.
Dees is a really funny guy. Barely any homework at all, maybe one online quiz every other week or so (unlimited tries no lockdown browser), and he tried to make class entertaining. Only issue is that hist tests are very difficult. You think you understand what's going on in class, until you get to his test. Chill guy though.
Funny guy, but his exams are very tough. You can understand everything going on in class, but when it comes to the exam, it's not like anything you studied at all. Not enough study resources, slides, a reading per unit, and that's it.
You should be fine if you go to class (I fell behind when I missed a few). Exams are mostly variations of questions from class or homework but a bit tricky. Exams are worth less than Chem1211 though, and the rest is just participation or homework that you can retake. Easier than Chem or Phys.
Great and engaging lecturer, great at conveying the content in a easy to understand way, very kind and helpful during office hours too, tests can be difficult but study plenty and an A is easily attainable.
Professor Dees is great, and you can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching. However, the tests themselves are pretty hard, and they are worth 70% of your grade. So, if you take his class I just recommend studying consistently.
Dr. Dees was great! Lectures were clear and he is quite funny. TopHat was only for attendance. Practice quizzes and group worksheets helped a lot. Tests are tough and very applied, but some questions are easy. ScienceGuyz was helpful! You'll need to spend a good bit of time studying, but the class is definitely doable if you put in the effort.
Don't trust the ratings on RMP! I did that and regretted it everyday of the semester. The test is never related to anything he talks about in his lectures. The lectures are so long and he does not annotate on the powerpoints either. The tests are 70% of the overall grade with no drops in any assignments. He cracks bad jokes and expects us to laugh.
if you have to take bio, take dees. he's funny, keeps class engaging, and asks for feedback from students on how he can help us succeed. attendance is mandatory, but it's a class I don't dread going to.
Dr. Dees is a great professor. His lectures are informative and easy to follow, he utilizes TopHat which is very helpful for practice, and he gave out a decent amount of extra credit towards the end on the semester. The class isn't hard, but it also isn't easy, so be prepared to put in some work. I 100% recommend Dr. Dees
mild mannered and calm, offers 2 hour office hours twice a week. hard class but not because of him it's just bio
I enjoy Dr. Dees' lectures, and he makes going to class very fun even though it is mandatory. Great biology professor if you are majoring in something science-related or just generally interested in biology. Tests were good at first, but they get more difficult towards the end of the semester.
Overall Dr. Dees is a pretty good professor. He ended up offering many different forms of extra credit that helped a lot of people's grades. His exams are very tough, but once you figure out how to interpret the questions they become easier. I would recommend getting ScienceGuyz. Be prepared to study! He is very caring and a funny guy.
Professor Dees is honestly a great professor; he is a fun guy, and it was easy to understand his lectures. The exams were pretty difficult though.
Professor Dees is awesome. His notes are concise, the TopHats helped with learning, and the quizzes are a great study tool for the test. You probably will have to study for this class because it is still a challenging course but it is not anything that terrible. He was also a funny guy and he put animal pictures on ELC so that's cool.
dees is such a funny and great professor, but slightly boring. exams count for 70% of ur final grade but there's no cumulative final and they r slightly hard but not too bad. def use the top hat questions, practice quizzes, & worksheet to review. go to class for tophat but if u miss 1 class ur fine cuz participation is a 100 if u got at least 85.
Overall, Dr. Dees is a great lecturer. He has an awesome sense of humor (dude uses brainrot which is wild), sets clear expectations for all assignments, and is available outside of class for additional help. My only complaint is that he didn't provide more resources to prepare for tests. Do the practice quizzes, slideshow questions, and top hat :)
so amazing!
Exams are 70% of the grade which is the worst part. There's 5 exams and no drops for any assignments. He doesn't post annotated notes, so if you missed a class, you better have a friend who took notes for you that day.
Dees is nice but doesn't go into enough detail in his lectures to prepare you for exams. I'd get science guyz the mock exams really helped me. He offered extra credit for us which saved me. He's one of those that shows you how to do a simple version of a problem then put one 10 times harder on the test. Does not post annotated notes so go to class.
Dr. Dees was a decent professor. He was very funny, but his lectures were sometimes boring and vague. He gets the info across, but doesn't really allow you to get a super deep understanding of the material. There's FIVE EXAMS that are hard, so it is a test-heavy class. Not an awful option if you have to take bio, you just have to put in some work.
Dr. Dees is an incredible professor who does an amazing job at conveying course topics during engaging lectures. The grading criteria of the class makes getting an A very achievable with a greater emphasis on actually learning the content. Tests are short and simple but hold a lot of weight, which can heavily influence your grade from one test.
Exams are worth 70% of your grade there are only five of them, and he doesn't drop any. If you want to even have a chance at passing you have to attend every class as one, attendance is mandatory and two, he doesn't post annotated slides so it's best to do them yourself. He also wouldn't round up my 79 to an 80 so he's pretty strict on that.
Dr. Dees is a good professor. You are graded on tests (70%), participation, and practice quizzes (multiple tries). His lectures are easy to follow, but does not go into depth so you have to do the readings outside of class. Tests are fairly difficult, but manageable if you study.
Take Dr. Dees ONLY IF you are comfortable with exams. Tests are 70% of your grade, so there isn't much wiggle room. Using the practice questions he provides is the best way to study for exams, and the lectures are pretty enjoyable. There are many easier options for BIOL 1107, but Dr. Dees is a seemingly good professor.
Dr. Dees is the GOAT. Although tests can be challenging if you don't pay attention in class/take notes and practice the questions on TopHat, the class is not hard if you put in effort. I got an A by studying hard for all 5 tests, and minimal work is required until the week of the test. I would take Dr. Dees again!
Dees is a sweet, silly little fella who made lectures engaging. If you're naturally gifted in science and test well, go ahead. If 5 exams accounting for 70% of your grade scares you, get ready to study TopHat problems and previous practice quiz problems. The tests are VERY application-heavy, so make sure you know the ins and outs of every topic.
I went into this class believing it'd be an easy class, but I was wrong. The exams make up 70% of your grade, and they are barely related to what you learn in class. Annotated slides aren't posted, so make sure you take good notes in class. He also tries to crack corny jokes, expecting everyone to laugh.
Such a very funny and sweet guy. I found the content hard, but I also had no prior bio knowledge. The tests are difficult, so understand and know how to apply the content well. He doesn't post annotated slides so I would try and pay attention in class. If you answer at least 75% of the top hat questions in class you get full credit for attendance.
Great professor but it can be a little hard to follow. Wish i could take him for other classes.
Best professor I've had at UGA in 2 1/2 years. Not easy though.
