Jon Dorsey was an awesome professor, highly recommended. He had fun examples in lecture and was extremely helpful and adorable!
Make sure you know your material inside out. His exams are ambiguous and each question is worth a ridiculous amount of points. Good thing for the essay, it saved my grade basically.
he was not helpful at all, he is confusnig and can't explain very well. I always studied for his tests but he ended up adding things that he didnt make clear during class time. I would not recommend him to anyone. I did much better in my harder classes.
I enjoyed his style. The course is an introduction to cognitive science. He covered the material well and made sure we understood it by explaining it in different ways and going back to it many times. There's review before the midterms/final which is very helpful. It makes the material more enjoyable if you're interested in it. which you should be
Explains difficult concepts very clearly. Tells some personal stories and jokes in class, but not so much that it's annoying. Always uses alcohol as an example in problems, lol. Patiently answers any question. Bit of a tough grader, but if he realizes a question was too hard, he'll curve.
I took Intro to Cognitive Science with him. His lectures are ridiculously confusing and he bounces around when lecturing. Also super boring. I would not take any classes with him.
Hard to follow and doesn't have any powerpoints/assignments (all based on "chalk-talk"). Midterms are super hard, too. Attendance is not mandatory but seeing as he does not post anything about the lectures on canvas it basically is. Lecture's are disorganized, too. Had to work really hard for B.
I like Dorsey, he is clear, patient, and knowledgable, but kinks need to be worked out of this course. The midterms are worth so few points - if you lose more than 2, it's a big deal. TA's graded essay midterm looking for arbitrary keywords that were never emphasized rather than reading the essay for your depth of understanding. Take thorough notes
Dr. Dorsey is a good professor. He seems really knowledgeable and always stops to make sure there is no confusion. He is really patient and gives lots of helpful examples. This class had 5 homeworks from the book, 2 midterms and a final. PHI is not my major and I was scared to take this course but he makes it interesting and understandable.
Dr. Dorsey is an awesome, caring professor. His lectures are very easy to follow and he always makes sure that everyone is on the same page. Made philosophy very cool and fun to talk about. So open to answering questions Didn't need to buy a textbook, all of the readings were given to us via Canvas which was great. Strongly recommend for PHI 1
This was one of the best classes I have taken here. Dorsey explains everything slowly and patiently, since the subject can be a little confusing. He goes over lots of examples and answers all questions to make sure you get it. I am taking PHI112 with Landry right now and I realized how great Dorsey was in making logic so interesting. Take him!!
A sweet teacher who is passionate about teaching but is really hard to follow. He likes to do his lectures on a chalkboard so its easy to get lost, but he tries to make it funny with drawings and different examples etc. Not many assignments at all and you're not quizzes on readings. Knows what he's talking about, but isn't very good at teaching it.
Dorseys lectures are clear, sometimes monotonous. He does a good job getting concepts across. Be prepared to study outside of class because BOY does he get off topic. He will spend a good 20 minutes answering a students hypothetical, off-topic, philosophy question. He's a funny man but honestly lectures could've been like 30 minutes instead of 80.
Dorsey will go in depth with material, add a few jokes to make lectures more tolerable to attend, and he'll ask for questions every so often to make sure there isn't any confusion. Very few assignments, no reading quizzes. If you attend & comprehend well during his straightforward lectures, it'll relatively be an easy and interesting class overall.
A fun class, not too difficult. There were not any homework assignments other than readings that helped give background before a lecture. Grade was comprised of a midterm, a paper, a multiple choice final, and participation.
This class was so boring, on such an interesting topic. I feel bad for saying that, but I also don't cause Dorsey decided to make the final unnecessarily hard, make everyones grade drop and not curve it. Questions were oddly specific with no study guide. Essay was fine. He does lecture with a pen pad and paper on projector, no slides, and its awful
First midterm and essay werent bad, but he made the final so tough that it dropped everyones grade. Didnt curve. Lecture style was boring and there were no slides to follow, just his doodles on a notepad.
Let's be honest, philosophy for CGS at Davis is such a joke and PHI13G is no exception. The way Jonathan delivers the material is so unengaging and makes one fall to sleep. The way everything is graded is very subjective and the TAs grade the majority of the class around a B. Dorsey goes off topic and the info you get is applicable to certain limit
Dorsey is obviously invested in the material he covers, and it shows in lecture. It can get boring sometimes, but there is a lot of overlap from other PHI classes, so that may be why. Despite other comments, the grading is more than fair. If you do the reading and go to discussion, you will be fine. PSA: There were no lecture slides.
Professor Dorsey was a kind guy, and his passion for the subject was evident. Lectures were quite boring though. He used powerpoint slides which greatly relied on attending lecture. 2 midterms, first being MC, second being short answer/essay and a final worth 40% of the grade that was tricky. Assigned reading often exceeded what you needed to know.
he sucks for phi13g but good for cgs1
Great professor. Passionate guy with a slightly monotone voice which can put some people to sleep. Very interested about what he is teaching. Wants all of his students to do good. Spends a lot of time on tough subjects, gives very detailed study guides (literally gives prompts for MT2) but has a slightly tricky final. Discussions are mandatory.
Graded by very few things but his exams are more than fair. Slides are minimalist so you MUST go to class/listen to the recorded lectures in order to understand. Lecture is optional but mandatory discussions.
Lectures were kind of hard to follow - need to really listen to what he says because he doesnt write most of it down. No powerpoint slides, just his pen and paper. He does record and post his lectures online though which was helpful. Readings are kind of confusing, so you really need to pay attention in lecture.
Professor Dorsey is an extremely chill guy who knows his stuff really well. Lectures can get a tad bit boring but he does his best to entertain his students. Bonus: He has a great sense of humour! and all his lectures are lecture captured !
phi112 was hard to understand but he is a really good professor and explains concepts really thoroughly and offers a lot of examples! he's also really funny and has a good awkward sense of humor LOL
Lectures can be a bit boring sometimes, but Dorsey clearly cares very much about the success of his students and makes up for any lack of enthusiasm in lecture with his easygoing and approachable personality. PHI 12 is inherently not a very exciting class, although it was by far the easiest I've ever taken at Davis.
I loved Dr. Dorsey! He's a wonderful professor and super good at teaching logic. I'm not a math person at all, but he explains concepts clearly that even I'm able to understand. During the BLM and covid situation, he addressed the issues, was very supportive and accommodated for students who were stressed under these circumstances. TAKE HIM NOW!!!
Prof. Dorsey gave pretty good lecture recordings and did a good job of making dry course material approachable. The homework wasn't too bad as long as you followed and read the textbook. However, some kids cheated on the midterm so he changed the grading scheme and the final was pretty hard. He made the best of a bad situation but it was annoying.
Taking this class online, lectures are uploaded only in audio format without slides or any other materials. Other than that lectures are a bit dry but overall not too bad. Weekly quizzes are multiple choice which is the worst thing to do for a philosophy class. Philosophy is not about remembering arguments and opinions. Barely any writing.
Professor Dorsey is a very solid professor. However, during his PHI112 class in the spring, several students cheated on the online midterm, which he responded to by changing the weighting of the grades more than halfway through the quarter, AND changing the format of the final to make it cumulative. It wasn't fair to the people who didn't cheat.
Dr. Dorsey gave interesting lectures and a manageable amount of reading per week. One quiz per week, weekly discussion with your TA which you'll want to attend for participation points, a midterm, and a 5 page paper. To succeed you have to pay attention to the lectures. Not the easiest class but Dorsey is nice and accommodating! I learned a lot.
Professor Dorsey is a very clear lecturer. The grading format in this class is harsh with no partial credit given for problems. Carnap is a pain to use and can be difficult to navigate. The last section is intensive and can easily diminish the work you did for the entire course. Good professor, bad format of the class.
Dorsey is a good professor. Very passionate about the topic, but this will lead to tangents during lectures. He's respectful of time so he won't go over the allotted time he's given for the week. The material is interesting & Dorsey explains it very clearly (although he can be slow). The class isn't hard, but you still have to put in effort.
If you're taking this class, be ready to stress out. Your final grade is just based on "hw" which are quizzes and the unit tests. He doesn't space out the "hw" with the unit tests so for some units, we had the "hw" due TWO days before, and the answer key was released the night before the UNIT TEST. If it's possible don't take this class:)
Terrible experience. His lectures are unprofessional, many filler words and redundant repetitions. An easily explainable concept ends up being a prolonged speech. His monotone lectures are really bothering. Also, grading sucks. He times assignments. Seriously, timing on assignments?! I'd never take another class from him.
The worst class I have ever taken. Exams are 80 percent of your grade-each being 20 points. If you miss one question on the exam, you are already at a B. Solutions to Homework were rarely posted and if they were posted, it was a couple of hours before the exam. The average for the final was around 40 percent. Awful class.

The most stressful class I have ever taken in my college career. Grades were not released on Canvas until after the final. No exceptions made for the difficulties of Covid. No communication at all of calculation of final grades. AVOID COURSE AT ALL COSTS!
If you're a visual learner and taking this online like I did, note that Dorsey's lectures are asynchronous + audio ONLY. Material is interesting, but he rambles a lot during lectures and this and audio only makes it hard to focus. Discussion sections w/TAs were kinda fun/helpful, and midterm and paper were okay but quiz qs sometimes worded oddly.
This class is very interesting and you can tell that Dorsey is very passionate about the topic. We had quizzes every week that were pretty easy but sometimes had a few trick questions. We had one paper which was our midterm (phi13 not 13g). If youre a visual learner this class could be hard since he has audio recordings only.
I got 100% in the class but that is solely because I already knew the course material. Anyone who didn't had a ROUGH time, and I know this because I spent a lot of the quarter trying to help everyone else. His lectures were unhelpful, the homework was timed, the problems were VERY difficult if you didn't have the tools (which he didn't provide) etc
im really confused why people are giving him bad reviews. i took phi12 during fall 2020, and the class was really easy. it's test heavy, but tbh as long as you watch lectures and do practice problems, you'll be fine. he's very good at explaining terms/concepts. solid professor for phi12.
Terrible class. I took this class online. Lectures are super dry and boring and recorded. Some of the lectures are entirely pointless and do not relate to any midterm or final. Textbook often helps more than his lectures. Definitely would not recommend
Prof Dorsey is a hit or miss professor. He is very conversational and laid back. At least during COVID, we only had a few tests that decided our grade. If you are a person that NEEDS structure DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I, for one, love a relaxed teaching style, so it was a good fit.
All the lectures are pre-recorded and insanely boring. Slides do not give any information that is actually relevant. The papers were easy but the final was mind-numbing. No practices questions were provided either. Class reliant on readings. Interesting material but he just cannot teach. Kind man but his kindness would not help me succeed in life.
I've taken Dorsey for two philosophy classes now. I'm confused by the negative reviews. Don't listen to any review telling you he can't teachthey likely just didn't watch the videos. The lectures are great and content is really well structured. IF you watch you WILL do well. That's been my experience both times anyways.
I think he taught this class pretty well. Lectures were all pre-recorded but were easy to follow and included lots of examples to help clear up concepts. He also provided resources to make assignments easier. Homework assignments and exams also allowed you to check your answers before submitting, so all in all it was a pretty simple class.
This class is as hard as you make it. If you are attentive to the lectures and follow along with the reading it should be an easy A. There were 3 HW and 3 Exams making each assignment very important. Dr. Dorsey lectures are straight to the point and he doesnt waste time. The most important thing is to take advantage of all the resources provided.
Took him for intermediate logic, and his class is actually much easier than it seems. So long as you keep up with lectures, actually READING the textbook is unnecessary, but it's free and has useful charts/definitions so keep it on hand. PHI12 was super easy for me so I might be a bit biased in saying this class was also easy.
I took CGS 001, PHI 112, and another class I can't remember the code of with Dr. Dorsey. He's definitely one of my favorite professors. He's very down to earth and explains everything very thoroughly. You can tell he tries to make the course palatable and fair for everyone. Though he can be test heavy, the tests are pretty straightforward.
Very clear grading criteria, interesting, easy to follow.
I just took his PHI112, intermediate logic. His lecture videos are very helpful and they include everything you need to know. You may need to watch certain parts of the lecture multiple times to fully grasp the material but he actually explains thing very nicely. As long as you actually do the practices you will excel in the homework and exams.
Slides dont cover the material, you have to listen to his lectures. I felt he was great at teaching the concepts. 2 take home exams required thought & application. Final exam was a little tricky. Overall enjoyed the class. Participation required weekly. Typical do the work and youll get a good grade, no tedious assignments.
My favorite thing about taking this class with Professor Dorsey was that you could feel his passion for the subject. You can notice when he gets excited about certain topics and it really helps engage the students. He has some funny jokes too.
Dorsey is passionate about what he teaches and engages his students even though his lectures were async. He goes on tangents during his lectures but looking back now, I appreciated his analogies and humor. The class is pretty straightforward: literally just 2 midterms +the final, but if you take good notes you'll be fine. I did not buy the textbook
Took him for CGS 001 over the summer, and he was a great professor. Lectures were always really well-explained and his enthusiasm for the subject really shone through. The class was graded by 2 take home midterms, participation in discussions, and a final, and overall was not too difficult. I enjoyed it :)
The course was graded on 2 take-home midterms and a timed final. Overall, it was a really interesting course to take and I really enjoyed the content. Some of the lectures were pretty excruciating to go thru and did not make perfect sense, but luckily my TA helped a lot. I would suggest keeping on top of the lectures because it's a lot to digest.
Dr. Dorsey never fails to keep me interested in the material. The class itself can be a bit difficult, I personally felt that the first two midterms were pretty similar to what you might know from phi 12, the last midterm is what really got me. He curves at the end, but don't expect it to be too drastic, it may take you from an A- to an A.
Dorsey's class was great. His lectures were very entertaining, although sometimes he does ramble on a bit. Grades were determined mostly by take-home exams and some participation. The exams were relatively easy. They basically tell you what they want. Fun class and easy A
Overall, I enjoyed taking this course. As long as you watch the lectures in a timely manner and refer to the textbook when needed, you should do well. Assignments are similar in difficulty to the exams, so be diligent and pay attention to them. The course grade is weighed by three assignments (25% of grade) and three exams (75% of grade).
I really enjoyed his lectures and I found the class very interesting. I dont really understand why hes getting bad reviews. The only reason I didnt get an A is cause I never showed up to discussion. Very accommodating as well.
Dorsey was great during CGS001. Although his lectures were very long and somewhat boring, the material was interesting enough to be engaged and he did a good job of explaining the important information in lecture. All assignments heavily relied on information found in lectures and the textbook, and I never had trouble finding info.
Dr. Dorsey was such a great professor, take him! His lectures were intriguing especially if you have an interest in cognitive science, the midterms were very fair and focused on big topics rather than tiny details, and the course material was very structured and organized. If you take good lecture notes, an A should be easy.
I really liked this class mainly because the professor really knows how to grab the classes attention. I earned a B because I'm a horrible test taker but the class is definitely doable. The lectures were interesting. Email TA's if you do take this class because Dorsey does not respond to emails.
Prof Dorsey is such an inspirational & humorous lecturer (his rmp is def underrated & ppl on our discord channel said the same): he made his lectures easy to follow & understand, also the jokes lol. Exams ain't testing harshly on details & he gave out study guides for preparation. I got 34.5/35, 29.5/30 & 47/50 on my 3 exams.
I was surprised to see that Dr. Dorsey was only rated a 3 out of 5. I took him for Intro to Cognitive Science and I really enjoyed him. The content wasn't always the most fun, but he was very good at getting his points across. There is no homework. The only grades we got were for our two midterms, discussion attendance, and our final.
Three subjects; symbolization, semantics, and natural deduction. The first two are fairly simple with a little bit of effort needed to understand it fully, the last is the hardest. 1 HW and 1 MT for each subject. There are a few questions and that's all that goes in your grade, so a couple missed answers will cost you a lot of your grade.
Professor Dorsey is great, he jokes around with his students during lecture and answers any question in class when it pops up. Lectures contain most, if not all, of the material needed for exams, it is exam heavy with 2 midterms and 1 final basically making your grade. Also participation in discussion is mandatory.
The only grades in this class are the tests (2 midterms and 1 final). I had this class at 8am but Dorsey was a good lecturer and he made it bearable. Discussion is mandatory and also very helpful (depending on your TA). The lectures are the most important part, the textbook readings are mostly just for supplemental material.
In lectures he is a good lecturer. But what makes him horrible is the grading scale. 4 Homework and 4 Exams total, your entire grade depends on basically a perfect score in all of these. Even one question wrong can tank your grade an entire letter grade. He does NOT give partial credit, which is ridiculous. Avoid for PHI 012.
I love Dorsey, any class taken with him is so much fun and honestly pretty easy. Enjoy his lectures
I LOVE Dorsey! The material is dense but easy to follow if you pay attention. Lecture attendance is not mandatory and recordings are posted to canvas. The class is based on section attendance/participation 10%, 2 Midterms 50%, and the Final 40%. The class before each exam, he reviews content and allows the class to ask questions. I LOVE THIS MAN!!
The class was great until the final. The final was online, very confusing, and worded weirdly. It was all like: a.) I b.)II c.)I and II D.) neither I and II, which in my opinion is the worst kind of format. Another thing, I went to every lecture and they were very good but his slides didn't have many words which made it harder to study.
This is my first quarter at UC Davis and he is my favorite professor so far. His influence makes the class and lectures very engaging. Attending lecture is important! He grades from a few things: (2 tests 50%, 40% Final, 10% discussion); difficult at times, however the content is very interesting and tests are fair. Great professor!
Most content came from lectures, but the lectures were fun to watch as you could tell he cared about what he was teaching. Gave a great overall view of Cog Sci. Found tests fairly easy as he was clear about what content to expect. Gave students 100% on second test due to strike and being unable to grade all the short answers and essays. I recommend
he says a lot of info during lectures but you never know what info is/isnt important, slides don't make sense (just images, not words), so you have to either go to lecture or read the textbook
Dr. Dorsey is one of the best professor in UC Davis. l highly recommend you to take him. He is helpful and an amazing lecturer. He cares about the topics taught in class and tries his best to explain it to us. You can ask him any question during the lecture and he will definitely help you.
Tests based on lecture material. Graded by 2 midterms, participation (showing up to discussion sections), and a final. Not a bad professor, but I sometimes zoned out during his lectures. There isn't a lot on the slides, so you have to pay attention. Textbook reading is optional. Went to his office hours once--he seems like a pretty chill guy.
Awesome professor
Great lecturer who makes complex topics easy to understand. Literally no homework except for textbook readings, but most of the material is covered in lecture anyway. Grade is based pretty much only on midterms and final, but if you pay attention in class and participate in discussion, they shouldn't be too difficult.
If you go to class and rewatch the lectures you should understand the material. He is clearly passionate and made me want to take more cog sci classes. He is my favorite professor ever, he speaks very clearly and makes himself very available for further questions. One of my favorite classes I've taken. I want to take more of his classes.
dont take him for symbolic logic. 8 total things go towards grade, 4 hmw assignments and 4 exams. Each are only 5 mc questions long so no partial credit. If you miss one question on an exam your grade is automatically an 80%. The content itself isnt hard, but he likes to put questions that are easy to overthink on the exams.
Professor Dorsey is definitely a great and fun professor! He will go through the homework in lectures before the deadline so basically you will get a 100% guarantee of homework credit. The grading policy is tough, but I think it is the standard that all professors who teach this course. He and TAs are all happy to address students' questions.
Dorsey is a good professor and this class was not as bad as it seems. Homework is worth a hefty amount but he goes over it during lecture so there's no reason to not get 100%. Graded on 4 quizzes that are 5 problems each and these will make or break your grade. Good professor and he seems very passionate about it. Helpful and kind.
He is super nice and records all his lectures. However, this class was heavily graded on the final. Although the final was online and open canvas, it was super hard. He also provided no study guide and gave ridiculous trick questions. PS he has some tough graders for the paper assignment. Avoid!!
If you went to lecture or watched the recordings, went to discussion, and skimmed the readings you would be fine in his class. 13G was only graded on midterm, paper, final, and 10% participation. no homework, so you really have to do well on the exams and paper. Lectures were a little unstructured but he's available outside of class.
Lectures are interesting and the only homework is reading assignments, which can be dense but aren't technically required. PHI 13 has two grades: 40% midterm, which is an essay question, and 60% final, which is multiple choice. All tests are online and open-note/open-Canvas. He is very caring and understanding. Interesting and easy GE.
Gives great lectures that are very informative and it's easy to tell that he is interested in what he's teaching about. He is definitely a philosophy guy so he may not be the best professor if you're looking for a more sciency approach. His final is online and mc but is difficult bc it asks for randomly specific things you wouldn't expect.
He's an alright lecturer but for some reason the way he explained things just didn't click for me. My TA literally saved me in this class and also made me super interested in the topic. I'm sure his lecturing works for other people though.
I enjoyed his class so much! He is really passionate about the topic and ensures that you understand the topic before moving on like he'll use multiple analogies or explain things many times until you get it. There were only tests in this class. As long as you pay attention in lectures and take good notes, you'll ace this class easily
Very friendly and good professor. The class is easy since there is no homework and it's only graded on exams. Staying awake in some lectures was tough but other lectures were fun especially with the occasional cursing. Easy class, take notes go to lectures, do the exam previews, you'll be fine.
I like Dr. Dorsey's teaching style! He is very thorough in lectures (if a bit repetitive) and will answer any questions you may have. Students will ask some pretty obscure questions, but he does his best to answer them and steer the class back in the right direction. I think the biggest challenge is learning how to argue in a philosophical way.
Really nice professor, but I fell asleep in almost every lecture. The TA definitely explained the content better and much faster. Only graded on an in-class, timed written exam, take-home paper, and mcq final. Fairly easy, just a little boring.
Only graded assignments were a midterm (week 3), a paper (due week 7), and a multiple choice canvas final (not proctored). Each was 30%, last 10% was discussion attendance. The midterm and the paper weren't too bad but weren't a cakewalk either. Final was super easy. Overall, great class and easy. Good intro to the topics from a passionate teacher!
He is a good professor but beware, some TA's are more helpful than others. Recommend doing the assigned readings but it is not mandatory. Only graded on one midterm, one paper, and the final. Some questions on the final are confusing but it was on Canvas and notes were allowed.
Midterm was graded by an external grader and it seemed they were only interested in preserving the bell curve. He said the final would be more conceptual than it really was which sucks when it is worth 60% of your grade. Bit of a slow lecturer but a nice guy overall.
Professor Dorsey gave really good lectures and was always down to help any student in need. Though there were very few assignments graded by, but none of them were really hard.
Took for the honors course. Very knowledgeable about the content taught. Sometimes got sidetracked with discussions in class. Overall, great job laying out dense content, showed great compassion towards students. Both midterms directly on topics covered in class, one MC and one written answers, practice questions/study guide given beforehand.
Super passionate and nice professor, however still a pretty hard class overall. do not skip your lectures! if you go to lectures and skim the readings you'll be all set to get a good grade. just be aware that it's not a "ignore and cram" type of class.
No homework! No attendance requirement! This man is a saint. I wish him good fortune. If you don't want to come to class, just watch lecture videos. They are interesting to study.
Dr. Dorsey is very knowledgeable and his lectures are engaging and fun. There are a lot of readings for PHI013G, but all of the relevant information is reviewed during lectures, so as long as you take good notes, you will do well in this class. There was a midterm of short answer questions, one five-page paper, and a multiple choice final exam.
Dr. Dorsey is a good lecturer and does a good job explaining complicated topics. He has reasonable expectations and the class isn't too difficult, but sometimes it can feel like the information is irrelevent or unimportant. It's a good introduction to a lot of topics if you want to study more cog sci, but otherwise it's not really worth it.
dorsey's a nice guy, but lectures are terrible. he goes off-topic most of the time and only speaks off of pictures on his slides. grades are determined by exams 2 midterms and 1 cumulative final, so if you screw up, that's that. also, the formatting of his final was so weird, i.e. a) i, b) ii, c) both i and ii, or d) neither i and ii. super weird.
Professor Dorsey often meanders off-topic into things irrelevant to the test. I often have to go back to lectures to capture his main points after looking at the study guide before the test since he jumps around a lot during lectures and includes a lot of convoluted, unnecessary information. Sometimes, its more helpful to just read the textbook.
great guy
dorsey is a very chill dude to talk with - that being said he isn't the greatest instructor. he yaps A LOT during his lectures when he doesn't need to - pretty sure i could've learned the whole course in 3 weeks and got an A. class itself isn't terrible as long as u get a good TA - if u take it w steven, expect him to grade ur midterm harsh asf
Good professor and important to go to lectures instead of looking at recorded ones. Sometimes he writes things on the board which you cannot access through the recordings, he uses visuals and whiteboard examples often. There is a lot of textbook reading and other readings and grading is only based off 2 exams, a final, discussion attendance
I think Prof Dorsey was great, he explained well in lecture and was funny. There is a written midterm, paper, and multiple choice final with an optional written portion. I personally thought my discussion was a big waste because my TA was not great but it was mandatory.
Good prof, easy class, but slow and boring. Past the midterm it felt like little new material was covered. If you want an A take this class. For fun look elsewhere. Section attendance mandatory (10% of grade). Final was hard, but a canvas test (30%). Midterm was an easy bluebook exam (30%). 5-page paper was tedious but easy (30%). Lectures recorded
one 20-40pg reading per week (optional). 1 short q midterm, pretty easy. 1 online final that was medium difficulty. recorded lectures. graded mandatory discussions. take good lecture notes and listen to lecture and you will get an A. 1 5-6 page paper. but he graded it differently due to strike and didn't even read our papers. funny and nice guy!
lectures were really boring and dorsey seems to yap in circles. his 1.5hr lectures can be summarized in a few sentences and its just tiring sitting thru the lectures just to find where the point is. only graded on 3 things - paper, MT(short essays), and final(MC), so beware. dont be like me and cram all the lectures in 2 days for the final.
Very lecture heavy. Grading however was a bit unfair but that is just the structure of the class, not necessarily a reflection of him. Dorsey is very nice and a cool guy, but the content can get boring and it is difficult to be texted on. The exams were challenging just because of the format of them. Not exactly difficult, but not exactly easy.
Professor Dorsey really sparks my interests in cognitive science! His lectures are professional and interesting. He also didn't gave us any homework.
I was nervous about 13G going in since the material is a little intimidating, but Dr Dorsey made it so accessible! Genuinely, he is an amazing professor and very knowledgeable in his field. I feel like I learned a lot from his class. Lectures can be long, but again he breaks down the topics to be very understandable. Very interesting!!
Dr. Dorsey was a friendly professor with clear grading criteria. Phi13 was only graded on 2 things: 40% written midterm and 60% multiple choice final. Being graded on two things seemed intimidating at first, but as long as you study for the exams, they were fair. He also curves exams when necessary. Overall, it was a good GE.
Took it as a GE, not too hard, and while concepts can get pretty complex, there honestly not too bad. Just go to discussion sections because those really help. Grade was one midterm one essay some participation and a final. Honestly not bad but not a good GE if your looking for something easy or interesting.
The lectures can be a bit lengthy, but Prof. Dorsey explains concepts clearly. Attend class, take good notes, and use resources like Unstuck AI to prepare for the exams. Easy A if you put in the work.
Seems like a nice guy but too nonchalant because Canvas is empty, not even a direct link to Carnap, no PowerPoints, weekly announcements, or modules to prepare you for lectures. Just talking and trying to do examples from the textbook on the overhead projector. Even the homework and exams are short and easy but count for all of your grade.
Grade is broken down into 3 takehome midterms and a final and 4 homework assignments. Dr. Dorsey goes through each of the homework sections in class and provides ample material on canvas to make sure you do well on midterms. Great Professor overall and funny.
Dr. Dorsey is a great lecturer. He doesn't assign an excessive amount of readings and explains difficult concepts in detail in class. All of his lectures were interesting and most were actively engaging. Would highly recommend!
If you get two test questions wrong, you get an A- which is rough. Homework answers are given in class and Dorsey is funny but lectures can be monotonous- more to do with the topic than professor.
The grade based a lot on the exam, I was not able to submit all question at the last minute which severely affected my whole grade. The Homework is Okay and he would offer you the answer.
I really enjoyed taking PHI12 with him, would recommend. It does, in fact, get harder at like the last week of class lol, but it's not that bad.
Worst professor I have ever taken. Class is graded on very few things and the final was so difficult. Do not take this class with him unless you are willing to put in a lot of time.
easy class overall and he made the class material fun and accessible
I LOVE DORSEY! he is such a precious man who definitely has tons of interest in what he teaches. the class is easy if you go to lectures (or watch them, they're recorded), and look at his study guides. grade is built up on 2 midterms, a final, and discussion attendance. discussion is mandatory, but you're allowed to miss 2 if i recall correctly.
Fine class. Lectures move very slow. Midterm exam and paper weren't bad but final was very tricky and definitely undersold in difficulty in my opinion. Prof made it seem like it would be straightforward but there were a lot of hyper-specific questions. Kind of a tricky professor who makes himself seem easier than he is.
Loved this class! The professor is super fun, honestly, all you need to do is watch his lecture videos and go to discussions. TA was super chill and explained tough concepts with really creative analogies. She made everything soo easy to understand. Overall, this class is an easy A
Dorsey is an amazing professor, but this class was such a pain OMG (mainly because most of the content was very new to me). Discussion with TA was slightly boring + but useful sometimes (?). Test heavy, midterm had three essays, multiple choice final, one paper. Overall, very nice professor!
Took as a GE, and was very computational. I thought it was like a psychology class but it's totally different. Wasn't bad at all, just make sure to study and memorize as much as possible. Discussions were very fun, helpful, and thought provoking.
Class seemed not too difficult after mt exam and mt paper, HOWEVER, the final was a total curveball. Professor made it seem like a review over the material would be sufficient for success, but the test was almost entirely trick questions of super-specific moments. I don't think the professor was bad, but I will never take him again after that.
I will say he's a caring guy who's clearly capable of answering your questions, but he's not the most inspirational professor out there. Also - I'm not sure if this is his format or the course's, but the final was quite a jumpscare considering it was a tricky MCQ exam compared to the written midterms and paper that seemed doable enough.
A nice guy. I'm going through a difficult time with personal issues, and he has been comforting and accommodating. First two exams were pretty easy, and I enjoyed the format. The lectures can get a bit dry, but he's a pretty chill man. Exam heavy, but his previews were excellent.
Professor Dorsey is very passionate about the topic, which made class quite engaging. However, he did not adequately prepare students for the final, which was full of tricky, gimmicky questions. If you do the readings, you'll do fine in the class. It is easy to get behind on the reading (sometimes ~50 pages) so do it as assigned.
A good teacher, however, his final exam didn't have any practice questions available beforehand. Overall, it was a good course, but it involved a lot of reading.
Do not take this professor. I attended every lecture, asked him questions, participated when no one else did, and got shook by an MCQ final when he didn't give us any previous exposure to MCQs. I was 0.1% away from an A, and he didn't give me any mercy. He seems easygoing and kind, but in reality truly lacks any inspiration or clarity.
