He is definitely a very cool prof., addresses us with a Yo! The material isn't that interesting, but he gives us good notes and the textbook is barely used.
I really liked him as a prof. He doesnt expect you to read the textbook, but tells everyone to read it just becasue its cool. Is really laid back and has class games sometimes to get people involved. Good notes
very laid-back
very logical.. if your into that sorta stuff..
Simplifies information very well, makes classes funny and interresting even if the material is not too exciting to begin with. Excellent prof for a first year class.
Great prof, very funny and he teaches class very well. You can always tell when a prof is bad because half the class will be missing but for Dr.Dushoff's classes, they were packed.
He is just a lovable adorable nerd. He doesn't complicate things. The material he taught was about the fungi, which was interesting itself, but he made it interesting. His tests are straight forward and from his notes, and he follows the textbook.
awesome!
really funny, not overly difficult, but definitely not an easy teacher.
He was so cool! Great sense of humour & entertaining way of teaching. So loveable & his classes were always packed! You learned so much because he made the material interesting. Great notes.
Most interesting prof I've ever had in biology!
Honestly, he's one of the funniest and most interesting profs i've met. Keeps classes entertaining and will help you out if you need it! Great Prof! Loved going to his lectures
I used to love ecology, hated it after this class. Horrible at explaining concepts... I don't think the material would be difficult if he taught properly. And its not like I'm stupid, I have close to an 11 average and found it really difficult to understand his lectures. The TA's taught me everything.
Best prof I've had so far (I'm in third year now). What I liked best were his simple, short, and clear notes and how he only tested from them. His tests took just a couple hours to study for (including the exam)!
Great guy, very fair with his tests/marking, but his explanations leave me more confused than when I entered the class. Also his social awkwardness is hard to watch... he's just not meant to lecture.
I took this course like 2 years ago and he was a funny prof but there were some really weird moments. For example, in one of the lectures, nobody could understand what he was saying and he was very frustrated so he ended the class like 20 min early lol. The course itself is boring though.
I am an engineering student who used to just sit in his lectures because I didn't want to walk to the library. Dushoff really made me consider switching into bio!
Somewhat awkward prof, but that's what makes him interesting. The material is pretty straightforward and his lectures notes are very complete. Assignments are pretty easy if you know your material. Tutorials are optional and I found them to be quite useless. Study his notes and do the practice problems and this course should be an easy A+.
Clear lectures and notes that are structured to help you succeed. Such a great prof, really entertaining. The only issue is that he gives long-winded answers to questions in class because he doesn't want to mislead you with an oversimplified answer.
Hes there to help, but his lectures are so boring Midterm was f hard, nothing like what you would expect
He's kinda quirky but I like that about him. His notes are all very clear cut and his tests and exams are straight forward and to the point. His resources for testable content and exam review were literally on the exam as well. Fill in the blanks, read the outlines, do the reviews, and you will get at least an 80%. Trust me, I barely did a thing.
i love him he's amazing. super straightforward, everything you need to know is laid out for you. clear, concise notes. lectures are fun just bc he's so funny (a kind of dry humour that I love). his tests are straightforward, honestly easy if you know your stuff.
Makes u apply knowledge rather than just recall. Notes are concise but u should supplement them with the txtbook for better understanding. Gives practice questions and was an ok professor. Short answer questions were easier than MC. Don't skip class the additional information he adds to his notes is important. Liked the 2nd prof for the course more
Dr. Dushoff ia a good guy who does really try his best. His tests are reasonably fair and he does want you to do well in his class. Tutorials are very helpful and the assignments are a good way to boost your grade. Class isn't really mandatory but it definitely helps to attend. I ticked off hilarious because he really does try.
His lectures are honestly very boring, but having Kolasa teach second term made me yearn for this man to come back and teach. His lecture notes are concise, and he is very truthful on what he will or will not test you on. Textbook reading is not mandatory, but helps explain some stuff better. Overall, a pretty decent prof.
His test questions are hard, lectures aren't the best, he can be funny but it's so hard to actually go to his lectures.
It took me a while to warm up to him, but his awkwardness and dry sense of humour grew on me. He's clear about what you will be tested on; however, test questions can be worded in a confusing way, so read them carefully! Lots of double negatives. His notes are very concise and fill-in-the-blank style. Supplement them with textbook reading.
He's actually pretty funny, and his notes are amazingly straightforward. You can just print out the notes he posts, but going to lecture you really get more out of it because he is so passionate about biology. Shame he only teaches half the course.
Dr. Dushoff was a really good professor. I had him for the first half of Bio 1M03 and although I didn't find the course itself as particularly interesting as I thought his lecture style made the first half quite engaging. He constantly cracks jokes and points out logical fallacies in the historical tract of evolution. Interesting guy to listen to.
bruh his notes suck and he goes off topic
Dr. Dushoff is a funny guy, but not the best lecturer. I found he wandered off topic many times and doesn't really explain anything well. His notes don't really make a lot of sense so I recommend reading the textbook as well to consolidate your learning after every lec. His tests are fair but some mcqs are hard and confusing
Had the displeasure of having him in my first semester. Heard he's a decent lecturer and fair, but this can't be further from the truth. Dushoff is an unorganized professor and does not know how to teach. He is boring, goes off topic, and facilitates stupid arguments like religion vs science and his test questions tend to be ambiguous. He sucks
Not really a tough grader but it's hard to get marks. Questions are always hard, even if you study in advance. You don't need to go to class at all to do well. He does however give good notes which saves you loads of time because the course is content heavy. He's not a bad prof, I just didn't like the course itself because it was too detailed.
Not a fan of his teaching style, lectures were extremely disorganized and he could not figure out how to work Microsoft teams. This was my worst grade so far because of how poorly this course is run. My TA also marked one of my assignments wrong and never got back to me when I asked her about it. Do not take this course unless you have to.
Dr. Dushoff seems to be a good guy but his lectures were quite disorganized because he can go off topic or fixate on one thing for some time (regardless if it's relevant to the lecture). I strongly recommend reading the textbook as his notes were sometimes confusing and relying on them alone doesn't exactly help you understand the material.
Dushoff is a classic absent-minded professor. I don't think he's a bad prof, but very very different than a high school teacher. He's very scattered in lecture content, office hours, and provision of practice material. I barely used the textbook, but went to lecture and that generally worked. His mc is pretty hard though- do lots of practice qs.
Fun prof but he sucks at teaching. His lecture material and the course itself is unorganized. Aside from the exam, the two tests basically make up your grade, and if you don't share the same braincell with this man when answering his test questions, you're pretty much screwed. The second prof, Dr. Kolasa, carried me in this course.
His lecture slides are completely irrelevant with very minimal content.
I personally enjoyed taking the course with him. His lecture notes do a nice job of summarizing the textbook chapters. Most people just don't like his MC because they aren't straight trivia and rather focus on conceptual and problem-based learning approached (aka applied). He's a sweet guy but he probably had a tough time working online.
best prof eva !
he kinda cute
not his fault i got a B tbh
He's really nice, I like his energy, he's just not a good teacher. His notes are very disorganized and he doesn't say that much useful information. You essentially have to reteach yourself the content. Test was terrible, questions were harder than practice tests given.
funnnny and a great prof!
I love professor Dushoff, hes a funny guy and his tests are extremely fair in my opinion. It didnt have anything not covered in lecture, and reading the textbook isnt required as long as you watch his lectures. The only thing is he talks really slow so I stopped going to lecture and started watching the lecture recordings at 2x speed.
I loved Bio 1M03 with Dr. Dushoff. The class might be dry, but Dushoff sets you up for success with template notes, practice tests, and exams. He is very approachable and his tests are very fair. He makes his expectations clear and it is not hard to do well if you follow them.
Not a good teacher. Everything he teaches is never on the test and he cannot explain simple concepts. Kolasas notes are useless for the exam, you could read the textbook. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS ITS NOT WORTH IT AND IT IS DEFINENTELT NOT A LIGHT WEIGHT COURSE
Dushoff does a great job of preparing you for the class, with super organized notes and lecture slides. His part of the course was also much more engaging, he would often go on tangents, but I still actually felt that I learned However, his test mc was so unbelievably unclear and difficult. I would definitely avoid him if you could because of that.
Dushoff was very engaging and made some really nice follow-along type notes for lectures that I really appreciated. He always loved cracking jokes and having a fun time in lecture but you must be careful because his test questions can be tricky, so make sure you do lots of his practice material.
includes every single thing you need to know for tests in his notes/lecture slides. his section of the course was a breeze compared to the second half
He had the notes laid out for each class well and was interesting to listen to. The text book was more of a supplementary tool.
Dr Dushoff is awesome! Lectures were easy to understand and he's super approachable. Tutorials were optional but super helpful. If you attend tutorial, you should get near 100% on the assignments. Plus, any questions you have the TAs will be able to help.
really funny prof. provided lots of practice tests, however, some of his test questions could be a bit tricky/unclear.
he makes the tests very tricky and unclear.
His tests are so hard and extremely unclear (impossible to understand some questions)
His lectures are engaging, and hit lecture notes are well summarized. Some of his test questions can be tricky but overall he was pretty fair. I wish he was the prof for the whole course.
HIS TESTS DO NOT MAKE SENSE, no matter what you do you wont be able to make sense of what he's talking about during lecture or tests/exam.
Confusing explanations and difficult to learn
ok. so he seemed like a nice guy but i didn't like his style of teaching. he just sounded very unsure of himself most the time. However, if you actually take time to comprehend his notes and do a shit ton of practice tests, you may be able to answer his test questions. with that said i wouldnt want to have his as a proff again.
He is an engaging lecturer and made the content interesting. I liked the way his notes were formatted, and he was interesting to listen to. That being said, his testing was challenging and at time unfair. Lots of his answers were slightly subjective or even contradicted his lecturing. He would also give very limited explanations to his answers
I went into BIO1M03 scared since I'd heard fall semester is hard, but I enjoyed it with Dr. Dushoff. His test concepts are taken from his notes and the concepts he goes into during lectures. Just take notes of the stuff he mentions in lectures and you will be okay. As a plus, he's an engaging lecturer and very funny.
Dr. Dushoff was an energetic and enthusiastic professor, and I genuinely enjoyed his lectures. However, I found his test and exam questions very confusing. They were designed to make you second-guess your choices, leaning towards a more philosophical approach rather than focusing on biological concepts + Test wording was unnecessarily difficult.
Getting a good grade in this class is definitely doable, but is very difficult. All of the material on tests from dushoff's section is purely from lectures. Style of questions is difficult, as they are worded to "prioritize logic", making them unnecessarily confusing. Would avoid taking this class in the fall, winter sem is supposedly a lot easier.
Very engaging prof and I don't understand all the slander bio1m fall students are giving him... A really cool person and although his questions are tough I think they are fair and actually helps you learn. Overall I enjoyed bio1m thoroughly.
Don't listen to comments. I had to work 3x harder compared to other fall STEM classes. Everyone I knew got their behinds handed to us in the first midterm which consisted of only Dushoff's material. The class average was a 28% and had to be curved. NOT worth to take this class if you gave a flying ____ about your gpa.
Dr. Dushoff makes going to lectures enjoyable. The course was split into the first half being with Dushoff and the second half another prof (who was significantly worse at teaching) and so I really appreciated Dushoffs half much more. The testing is fair and if you go to lectures you should be fine in terms of the Dushoff content.
such a cute prof, tries really hard to be funny and engaging. tests are less memorization and more logic and can be confusing but if you pay attention in lecture you can definitely get an A
yeah no. if you have the option of taking this course with another prof, do that.
I'm assuming alot of these individuals who wrote these reviews aren't in a sciences program because this is the easiest course I've taken since gr.11 bio. Also not sure why one of the top tags is "skip class, dont pass" considering how all of the lectures are recorded, and you really only need to go to lab which is standard in every school.
Engaging, funny, mostly good at explaining, & fun. Concepts are taught through a logical way, good for understanding but makes the midterm hard. On a one on one he sounded a little snappy. Take that with a grain of salt as it was my only chat with him as I tried to avoid to do so after that. He most definitely is not like that as a person imo.
Don't listen to the other reviews. Unless you're into evolutionary bio, this class will bore you to death. Although the content at first may seem easy and straightforward, his tests were like solving riddles. They're worded in a way which makes you question yourself if you understand English or not. The MCQ choices are VERY similar to one another.
This part of the course was a bit tougher than average but totally manageable. Dr. Dushoff is an incredible prof; clear, funny, brilliant, and genuinely cares about students. His midterm expectations were fair and true to the slides. He really made a course that I was dreading into one that I genuinely enjoyed. I'll really miss the Friday jokes! :)
doesn't make you really memorize stuff, his tests are more about understanding concepts
Many manyyyyy grammar errors that can be confusing on tests!!!!!!! Other than that, pretty chill.
Tests are so cooked. The questions are so confusing, like riddles among themselves. The results get released and they end up having multiple right answers, then they have to change the marks and the answer key. To me, it just seems very disorganized. It sucks because he's a great teacher and his lectures were interesting, but tests were impossible.
Very funny and knowledgable lecturers, bad communicators. This courses is more about the ability to reasons, logicizes and think critically more than it is about biology and evolutions. The tests questions were fair, but is very logic-heavy in that you need to works around the weird wordings and figuring out what the questions actually means.
Very knowledgeable professor, especially if you visit him during office hours. You genuinely can learn a lot from him by reaching out. His test is more logic focused than recall focused, so as long as you UNDERSTAND the concept his tests are fair and doable. If he makes a mistake on his test, he takes full accountability and gives marks.
Where do I even begin. This guy cannot explain things in a way that is easy to understand. His tests are actually ridiculous and aside from the test content just being hard, the amount of typos and mistakes on both midterms was honestly unacceptable. He's not a bad guy; he's pretty friendly during class. But as a teacher? It's a no from me.
Personally, the tests were not AS hard as much of the other reviews say but I do agree that the wording can mess you up. His questions test you more philosophically than actual terminology and memorization.
Alot of what is on thetest is what you write within his fill in the blank notes in class. At first it is a bit confusing but when you get a hang of his learning style it isnt too bad. Textbook is not mandatory, however, it can be used to verify you understand the material. He is way better than the other prof that comes in midterm of the course.
Great prof, tries his best to make learning fun, he makes notes for you so you just memorize those points, don't memories only bold words, knowing concepts are more important than definition. his mc is tricky but if you do practice test you start to think like him, if he thinks the mc was hard or unfair he does consider curves and bonus points.
Hit or miss tbh. Some students find his testing style suitable for them (the more philosophical thinkers, questioning every single small detail). Other's (who prefer memorization) struggled I assume. Oddly enough, I did better on Dushoff's tests than Kolasa's even though Kolasa's were a lot easier. Either way, avoid taking it in the fall.
I actually liked his lectures. His lecture are more simple logic based and less about memorizing. His note are not too hard to follow but it takes forever for him to get to his point. His test questions are strange and difficult to understand. Do his old test questions to get a feel for how it is.
