He's a nice guy. Talks about the Red Sox a lot during class. MSIS isn't that fun of a subject, but he tries to water it down and give you a lot of examples (actually too many examples) from the text. He doesn't use the big 3-ring book-save yourself $200! I'm sure he'd be willing to help you during his office hours. He teaches Excel and Access too.
And he also gives a study guide before tests, which can be confusing sometimes. Multiple Choice, Fill-In, Short Essays. Homework is easy, and he's easy on grading homework, which are reflection questions
Great professor, first day he takes a picture of all his students so he can memorize their names. HW questions all are reflection questions and he only makes you buy one of the 2 books saves you $$$. Highly recommended
Professor Frankel is a wonderful teacher. He is knowledgeable of his field, he is accomodating to students, he grades fairly, and he makes the classes enjoyable and fun. His tests are not designed to be overly difficult. Anyone who puts effort into the class will get a good grade. I would recommend him to anyone who is taking MSIS subjects.
With no question to ask, this guy is a good prof. in class. However, out of class he cant keep his mouth off from ppl business. Knownledgeful in class, but need to know when n where to tell the joke. I'm sorry prof. but your word harm ppl dignity and feeling.
Prof Frankel is amazing. He teaches in a realistic level, and with real world application. The book was hardly used, and when it was, he would give copies. I wasn't too interested in what this class had to offer, but once I had taken it, I learned more than I thought I would. Definitely take any class with him.
He's a nice guy and does a good job teaching. There was no textbook this semester and he gives photocopied handouts which are a plus.
Professor Frankel is extremely nice. He is very organized, and he makes the class fun. There is not much work at all. He gives you plenty of opportunities to do the work at home so you do not have to come to class. Only a few assignments from the book, but you do need it. Hes great though.
Frankel is the best teacher I've had at UMass. He is very organized, fun and makes the class very interesting. I would definitely reccommend him to anyone!
i like this professor, very very nice polite kind teacher. i like to take his class
he is a very good, polite and kind teacher, he cares about his students. i like to take his class
Prof. Frankel is the ideal professor; he is friendly, fair and proficient in his field. Prof. Frankel is an asset and great representative of the University. Enjoy.
Prof. Frankel is an excellent teacher. I took this class online. All the assignments were organized into a different folder for each week. The assignments and his instructions were extemely clear and he was always quick to respond to any questions. By far the best online class I've taken!
Very good professor. He made everything clear and if you study you will do well, i recommend taking him if you need a requirement you will leave learning a lot
Prof. Frankel is an absolute ideal professor. I had the best time in his class. If you attend every class & actually pay attention you'll get an A. It is not dreadful, he makes it very fun and rlly enjoying. I wish I could have him every semester! 2 days a wk, 1 in the classroom, the other in the lab. He is just a fantastic person!
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!! VERY HELPFUL, KIND AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I WOULD RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS.HE IS JUST GREAT!
This professor is the best. Attendance is not mandatory. He doesn't care if you show up or not. He puts his notes in his blog so you just study that and Ace the tests. Textbook is used only for homeworks. There are 6 homework's and you can skip one. 2 midterms and a final. I recommend taking his class, the one in the auditorium so you don't show up
He is certainly a nice professor!! Strongly recommend!! He doesn't care about the attendance. Just do all of the home work and the test. But I suggest to attend the class if you want to do less work on the review before test. His lecture is helpful for you to understand the course. Final is pretty easy!! I got the grade better than I expected.
Really interesting professor and is always willing to help. His lectures are interesting and even in large classes he gets the class involved in discussion. Online homework from the textbook and MS Excel and Access projects, not too hard if use tutorials and ask him questions. Take this class with him!!
He is a very easy and neat teacher. He shows video clips that is related to the chapter, and teaches the information that you will need to do well on the test.
There is a lot of work, but it is fairly easy to do. 2 quizzes, a cumulative final, homework almost every week, and there is assignments in the computer labs that are mandatory and take a bit of time.
Great Prof! Best one I have had! Take him if you can!
Great professor and great teacher!
Very fun class, whether you know nothing about computers or you're obsessed. Jon is super helpful, but there is a lot of terminology you must memorize for "quizzes" (more like exams). Learned a lot.
Great guy, loves what he does and knows his stuff. He emphasizes on teaching you what you will use out in the business world. Only professor at UMASS I have had so far that preps you for the real world, Thank you Professor!
Excellent professor, clearly uses real word experience to help convey what is important to students. Simple labs and assignments, tests are also straight forward. Go to class and listen to him, you will learn all you need to do well. Also puts his notes up on a blog to look at later and study from. Would recommend and take again.
Didn't require you to come to class but it was helpful if you did. Only had two tests and the final. Weekly assignments were online and a breeze.
Frankel is the man. One of the most enjoyable, fun, entertaining, easiest classes you will take in your college career. Attendance isn't mandatory, and he assigns work at the beginning of the semester that isn't due till the last week of the semester. I would take him for every class if I could.
Prof Frankel is the man. I'm pretty sure everyone in my class absolutely loved him. Very cool and mellow guy but also very smart and experienced. A great professor and even a better person. Very reasonable and fair grader. If you show up and act like you care, you'll get the grade you deserve..(most likely an A)
He is a very good professor, he is very easy to talk to and would work with you to help you if you ask
Great Professor, always willing to help, quick response to emails. I will take him again
Wish there were more Professors like him, he is great!!
Easy class and the professor does everything he can to help you. It's pretty vocab heavy but the exams are really easy and he does scale. Home work is super easy.
fun great professor... he makes his lectures very modern and relatable.. funny and helpful. u kno what u have to do and all u have to do is do it! very clear TAKE HIM
Great professor! Very fun lecture. Def would take him again
funny teacher, his class is my kind of class, fun and not stressful, and you will learn a lot of things. In just 1 semester i know how to code in Python and Java. This is what coding is about, suppose to have fun.
Professor Frankel is a great man and wonderful instructor! You will learn a lot. Trust me. Definitely would take again.
Wish every professor was like Jon Frankel. You learn a lot, and yes you have to memorize quite a lot of stuff, but it is all worth it! An easy going class, not stressful at all. Professor Frankel makes everything to keep your attention and make class interesting. U learn a lot, without any kind of stress - isn't it awesome?
He is a good professor that is really good at teaching fairly complex things to beginners. He is very easy going and extremely easy to communicate with. He really wants people to actually learn and succeed.
Great professor, teaches the materials clearly for students to take away from his class. Take him i recommend 10/10.
Great professor! He relates all concepts to real world examples, and keeps you engaged during his lectures. He is very passionate about what he teaches. Not much work in the class, but you have to buy two online codes for homework that are about $90 each! The homework he gives can only be done online through the two course codes.
Assignments each week. Tests are long but answers are online. Organized class and he uses funny videos to help understand topic. More assignments and less time towards end of semester.
This class was very easy. As long as you show up and take notes then it should be easy to pass the quizzes and final. He was very nice and caring. He always brought relevant newspapers to connect with the class lectures. Also, he starts the class with relevant cartoons which was also fun because it doesn't make the class boring.
Very fun class! Show up to class and take notes and you will be fine. The homework online is nothing unbearable, just don't forget to do it by the due date. The material is fun and he always relates it back to present day technology and companies. There are 2 quizzes and a final, plus the online homework. It's a great class!
He is completely amazing. As the grades you may get through homework, quizzes and stuff; you should talk to him in person and he would let you take a look at your current grade as he does not use blackboard. Do your work and study for the quizzes, it is an easy A and great professor. He GIVES you so many chances to improve grade
He is one of the best professor. Very clear instruction and very helpful. He is very good responder to the email. His quizes are easy and its an easy A if you do what he says.. Highly recommmended!
very good teacher
I liked Professor Frankel because he is understandable and help you out if u ask. He is not a tough grader buttttt beware of the excel that you will get that is due almost at the end of the class. Start doing these excel as early as u can because it is a big part of your grade and they are a lottt. However his tests are very easy and managable.
Lectures are easy to keep up with and understand. He posts lecture notes and quiz study guides online. Easy A as long as you keep up with assignments. He's a good teacher and does only quizzes students on material he went over.
Nice prof. SHow up to lecture and you will learn. Mostly demos in the class. Some of te projects are hard, however he grades them nicely. Show up, pay attention, and ask questions, and you will pass the class.
Very nice Prof, I recommend
Great professor, highly recommend as his instructions are very clear and precise. As long as you do what is assigned and follow the instructions you will succeed in this course.
He is a great professor. Very clear on what he expects and what is graded. He offers study guides that are VERY helpful for the quizzes. Great teacher overall.
Take him if you have the chance to, good professor and explains what he wants from the students in class and a great professor to go to for help. homework and projects is all on connect
Professor Frankel is probably the best professor I've had at Umass. He's very lenient if you miss an assignment and he's very passionate about what he does. His lectures are amazing, very interesting and he's a fair grader. Also he doesn't really care about attendance. Took two of his classes and I loved them both because of his great lectures.
By far the easiest class I have taken. He gives you the questions before each exam and there is some extra credit. Homework is to read and answer multiple questions on Connect. You also have to do some excel assignments that are easyit just teaches you the basics.
Does not put effort into online course. Work is given all at the beginning of the semester and I felt uninformed and lost throughout the entire semester. I learned nothing. He gave almost no work and then only two weeks in the semester he piled on up to 6 hours of work. Unorganized and not helpful. I do not recommend
Easy A class if you do all the work he assigned on Connect and Simnet (very easy). Spend more time on Excel part because it take a lot of time to complete. Overall, he is a great professor.
Hes a great professor. Hes very clear on what hes want you to do. He replies email fast. Participation grade is based on logging into Blackboard 2.5 hours/week and been online at least 3 times/week, clicked 100 content links, read 200 discussion posts, made 10 posts and made those posts on at least 7 different days.
Awful experience. He handled 11-minute classes every Tuesday. He never taught us anything. He dumped piles of work on us and expected us to learn the material on our own. I dropped the course and took the course again with another professor who is much better now. Can't believe half of these professors are getting paid to do basically nothing.
This class was awful. He holds a nonmandatory office hours meeting on thursdays during the time that we should be having class. That's not the bad part however. For a lot of the assignments and tests, there's a lot of information i seemed to have never learned or even seen in any of the chapters that he expects you to know. wouldn't take this again
This class is just awful. He puts minimal effort into this class, classes are non mandatory he dumps a bunch of work on us and expects us to just know. I would avoid taking him, what a waste of time
One entire semester with him and I might have seen his face twice. He never gives lectures and just dumps loads of homework on you. With that being said, it's easy and if you do it all you'll get an A. Easy class, terrible professor
this was a pretty easy class to take during the remote learning. No mandatory zoom classes and he made it really clear every week what we had to do for that week. The excel and access labs were alot but he gave us plenty of time to do them. He is very good at answering questions and emails. would def take him again
Took it remote but same as in class. You have excel labs but its easy (very helpful for future). You have two quiz and one final exam and its all mostly definition. So if you study them youll be fine. You have weekly homework, literally takes like 10 minute to do because its way too easy (base on textbook.) His grade is straight forward.
Honestly Frankel was the best. I was a freshmen when I took his class and I expected it to be so much harder because of the reviews but it ended up being one of my favs. If you pay attention in class and take notes, for the quizzes really study the guide he gives, and do the labs its an easy A. The work is not hard at all, just time consuming.
I took his class my first semester at UMB and didn't know what to expect. There are 3 labs a week that are not hard. If you are going into business and think that excel labs are a force, you should probably switch your major. Two quizzes and a final with all the answers to the study guide on quizlet. Keep up with the work and you will be fine.
Very good at conveying information in a way that makes sense. Covers a broad range of topics. Taught us Excel.
This is an intro to coding class. The class itself wasn't hard but if you miss a class, and you don't know, it can be challenging. The class itself is a easy going class. Used programming like Python, Java etc. There are at least 3-4 quizzes. Overall enjoyed this class.
Probably one of the easiest courses I have taken. You have to pay for 2 textbooks that contain all assignments, but they are super easy and as long as you do them on time you get a 100%. Assigns 2 tests, one easy/small group project, and an easy final. He is really nice, helps with assignments when needed, and quickly replies to emails.
I love this professor! Super nice, caring and understanding. The class consists of a few lectures, and videos. Most projects were group presentations which were easy. He's passionate about his work, and a real gem. TAKE THIS COURSE !
Was easy until the excel works
This professor was super respectful and kind. The work was tedious but it was easy. He gives a few quizzes and a final and one project. Overall I would definitely take this class it was super helpful.
I took the online MSIS 110 class and it worked well for me. There are weekly discussions and assignments on Connect/Simnet. The work isn't hard until you start Excel which can be difficult for some people. He provides study guides for the 2 quizzes and final exam. He responds to emails pretty quickly which is great. 100% recommend him!
Fantastic professor with great lectures. Class had two quizzes and a cumulative final. Do the simnet labs on time and don't let them pile up. You'll thank yourself for this. Studied for like a total of 2 hours per quiz/final and got A's on all of them. Not a hard class but if you aren't organized and have trouble turning in work, than be cautious.
Easy concepts and class. He randomly checks attendance on days not spent in the Lab. Go to both Lab and Lectures to keep up with the homework. He allows a cheat sheet for the final and midterm. Really nice and flexible. He reads his Emails. There is a good amount of homework, easy and all online.
The course itself is actually pretty cool. It gets you started with a lot of things that will be useful once you enter the workforce. The biggest issue with this class is that you are essentially paying around $100 bucks to do the homework. Other than that, Prof. Frankel gives interesting lectures that try to make information systems not boring.
hands down probably the best professor at this school. He actually sets his class and hw up so you learn and at your own pace as well. Not stuck up about attendance and understands shit happens. Id be upset if I got any other professor for MSIS other than Frankel. he da goat fr
Professor Frankel is one of the best professors I've ever had at UMass Boston. He may be fast in class, but you can ask questions at any time. He is patient when answering questions and willing to explain until you understand. I like the ambiance of his class, which is friendly and comfortable.
Hes one of the best for a first years
Bit of a wackadoodle. Funny guy. Pretty easy class, as long as you keep up with the work. There's two quizzes - I recommend studying key terms from the textbook and the study guides on his blog but its not too difficult. Final exam had a crossword so that's something to look forward to.
3 Quizzes (Midterm, about 2 Weeks before Finals, and then Finals). Excel Labs is accessible if you pay attention and take the opportunity of the free Lab time on Thurs. Homework is also easy. The final project includes a Group Project. PAYING ATTENTION IS KEY IN THIS CLASS!
Professor Frankel Is so caring! He is genuinely a great teacher and will help you with anything you need on the Labs when you go into the Lab. The homework each week is so simple and the best part is you can do multiple homework's at once if you like to get ahead. Take him! He is amazing!
Very entertaining lectures; My class format was 2 days a week, one lecture a week and one OPTIONAL lab a week which was amazing. The homework and due dates are very straightforward and independent. Honestly, very easy to do well in his class if you have a consistent work ethic. Would HIGHLY recommend.
Already been lots of great comments about Prf. Frankel, and I want to consolidate those. Amazing lecturer, supportive, and funny. Homework consists of Connect and Simnet, both can be slightly heavy, but if you put in an average amount of time, you're good to go! Most importantly, pay attention in class and take notes, you'll be at least B+ or above
Knew what he was talking, demonstrated experience in the field. The assignments were reasonable and the lectures were interesting.
The homie fr. Honestly a great professor that knew what he was talking about and had interesting lectures, sometimes it would get a little boring but I mean... it's school. Would recommend him to anyone tho he a real one.
Great professor. Gives a decent amount of homework but allows the student to work at their own pace. Very interesting and valuable lectures. Provides a lot of study tools for quizzes making them very straightforward.
SO MANY LABS. takes a lot of time to do. labs each week, attendance is optional but GO TO THEM AND DO NOT FALL BEHIND. don't cheat with the labs (don't use someone else's finished one & put ur name on it, IT SAYS IF U CHEATED ON HIS END. he called someone out for doing it). hw is easy, once a week due friday. boring lectures, but bearable.
Awesome teacher. Teach well, know what he is doing. He send opportunity to suitable students even after taking his class. I sincerely hope I can take his class again in the future.
The class is graded based on 3 main things: weekly labs, weekly textbook work, and tests. There are 2 tests, each worth 10% and a final worth 20%. The tests are really fair, he posts the study guide online the week before and he takes questions right off the study guide. The labs are excel labs and alongside the homework is all online. Great guy!
easy A as long as you pay attention. all coursework is online which i prefer because you can do it on your own time. its a little tedious but really easy. lectures are relevant to the homeworks and quizzes. one of the better professors ive taken
great instructor!!!! pushes the work necessary put with all the information need to make yourself great. Great feedback and as well as easy to connect to through email with a fast response.
Legitimately one of the most arrogant professors I've ever had. Constantly doubles back on his word, leaves out important information, and then blames you for not seeing it. Dry, boring lectures, and time intensive labs, would not recommend.
I had a great experience with the professor but theres lots of homework and assignments :(
This professor is amazing. Period. The class is not too difficult, just the right amount of difficulty. If you have an issue, he addresses it quickly. He is very understanding, and reasonable. 10/10 would take this class again.
Best professor I have had thus far. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and will help you whenever you need help. Instructions are always very clear, homework very straight forward and if you do the homework and readings you will always do great in the exams (quizzes). 100% recommend taking any of his classes.
Professor is knowledgeable, but assignments and labs can be time-intensive. Lectures are dry but useful. unstuck study helped with study prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Prof Frankel is awesome & an industry expert. Lectures are engaging, exams not difficult & I learned a lot from his class! Homework is demanding but if you're serious about learning, have good study skills/time mgmt you will get an A. There are wkly quizzes/Excel lab reports (multiple tries). Study guide for quizzes/final. I highly recommend him!
In my opinion, his lectures are pretty boring and he just often goes over what you read in the textbook, but otherwise, he's a cool guy. The homework is extremely easy, and there is an excel course he makes you take which takes around 8-10 hours total, but he gives you over a MONTH to do it. Do NOT leave it until the last day. Easy class so far.
He actually talks to us instead of just reading off slide shows, he also sometimes brings props to show us. His class is manageable, very organized, homework wasn't that time-consuming, and he is very clear on what to study for upcoming quizzes. He is also extremely accommodating. Highly recommend
Best lecturer I've had just because it's not all him talking to a wall but I feel like the students were the letdown for not taking advantage of the way he leads his classes. Participate and class will fly by, do nothing and you will be bored out of your mind.
I enjoyed this professor because his teaching style was really helpful to remember what was discussed in class. He writes notes as he goes that way we have notes from what was discussed that day. If you happen to miss class, you can see what happened that day. He is also very nice, tests are straightforward and he gives you a solid study guide.
Great professor, engages with his students. Easy final project. Doesn't read off slides, actually uses his knowledge. MUST TAKE with him if you're doing MSIS110. Brings in his own props to show us. He is organizable, and manageable. bunch of connect assignments but it is very useful. excel assignment. overall very nice and understanding.
Probably the best professor I had as a freshman. He taught clearly and was super helpful and lenient. I actually was able to learn things and its a chill class. I would 100% take another course with him as the professor.
BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!! super enjoyable lectures. Grading and work is straightforward; if you stay on top of your work, the class is very easy. You have connect chapters due at the end of the week and Simnet labs for the month of October. He makes even boring topics very fun and interesting. I would 100% take his class again if I could
Prof. Frankel teaches the material clearly and the course content is reasonable. Unfortunately, his communication is consistently rude and dismissive, and he is largely unapproachable when questions or concerns arise. He does not use Canvas, deadlines are rigid, and expectations lack transparency. Extreme caution advised.
Please disregard whoever wrote that his expectations lack transparency. He is very clear about what he wants. His lectures are interesting and fun, he also try different ways to start the class so he doesn't bore the class. He answer emails within 1-4 hours, depending if he has classes or not. Gives out study guides so you know what to expects.
