Really knows his material but wants the students to learn the material on their own. Doesn't lecture much. But he is very accessible for help anytime that you need it. He really wants to see his students succeed. Too much weight on quiz grades, but tests were very straight-forward. He just came to GSU, take him for FI if you can!!!
Took him during summer 2008. Great guy, just came to GSU. Likes to let everyone learn by themselves and peers. Rarely ever stay for the full class, but it's summer, can't blame him. Not hard to get a B if that's what you're looking for. Uses textbook a lot, quizzes and tests are multiple choice, test questions basically come from quizzes & hw.
He really knows finance. He talks straight and real world. Expects you to work problems outside of class, but is always available to help in class. Great teacher. Tests hold a lot of weight, but you can do well if you study.
You will not learn anything if you take this guy. You might get a good grade just because he knows he is so bad but be prepared to sit in a classroom and not know what the guy is talking about. He has no interest in teaching students and could care less if the students want to learn.
If you are a slacker student who doesnt want to learn about finance then he is a good choice. If you chose finance as your major and want to graduate with knowledge in Portfolio Mgt then avoid this guy. He is a slacker prof. No syllabus, no slides, no book. He just mumbles some stuff and no one is following. He does not teach.
very nice guy. makes jokes in class and ends class early. He doesnt take the class seriously at all. He puts no effort into his classes and it's obvious that he does not like to teach. He does make himself available outside of class though. If he got a grade as a prof it would be a D.
Great teacher. Extremely laid back, which I really don't mind. He is flexeble in terms of grading. By all means, he is the only teacher at GSU that makes sense at least in the finance department. The reast are just there to make your life miserable. So, please, take his class and get it over with! I did and I got an A with not much of an effort.
This class sucks because of the students. You have general business people taking this class. They are like leeches. They suck the resources from the professor, when this is the only finance class they are required to take. He is nice. His tests aren't hard. The book has so many mistakes! I was annoyed with the book and not the professor!
Great Professor. I actually enjoyed his class and got a lot out of it. I actually understood and appreciated his method of teaching. He always lets the class out early. He is extremely helpful and wants you to do well. This was my 2nd time taking this class because I got a "D" other FI professors are hard to understand.
Good professor and funny too. He is geniune in wanting students to pass and always stays after class to help students. He is also easy to understand. Definently recommend!
Awesome professor!!! I had originally signed up for prof Sandya's class the previous semester, and dropped the class just like over 50% of the students did!!! Prof Godbey is a fantastic teacher, he makes finance fun (and that takes skill!) I would love to have him as a teacher again in the future for other Finance classes... TAKE HIM!!!
Best professor at GSU! Take him... great class!!!
Great professor!
I had Mr. Godbey for Spring 2010 and he's a great teacher. He finds the time after class to help with any questions. I highly recommend this Professor and hope he will continue to teach at GSU for quite sometime
I highly recommend you taking this teacher if you want to pass Finance with a good grade. Took this class Spring '10 and he is wonderful. Very fair with grading, gives you extra quiz to make up.
Great Professor, I actually understand Corporate Finance and I'm far from a Finance major. He doesnt try to trick you, he tries to get everyone to understand and he's also very humorous.
Professor Godbey's teaching style is AMAZING! He has a passion for Finance and that shines through. He creates a fun learning environment and relates the subject to real life events which makes FI more understanable! I did not have any type of interest for the subject before, but wish I would have majored in it now! Highly recommend!!!
Great prof!
Great teacher. He is funny and makes the class laugh often. You have to have the book, but that is the case for any finance 3300 class. Gives you time in class to work on problems, if you want, and is helpful in answering questions. You want to take him for FI.
He covers alot of material. If you study alot you can get an A. He will write the answer on the board without showing the compuations. Test has errors and examples have errors.
One of the best profs I've ever had.
Save yourself take Ruff. He doesn't explain things very well. Also assigns a project that's not even mentioned in the syllabus grading scale worst part is there aren't any written instructions on the project instead he verbally tells you and you have to take notes because he wants it to relate to real life as he is your boss.
Seems like a cool guy. Really laid back. Makes jokes in class. However I come in class to do homework without full explanations. project little details. Syllabus no dates. requires you to teach your self. Iv never failed a class before but it seems like I might. Im really lost in his class went to his offic no solutions to exam..
No lecture slides. No instruction of the assignment, but if you go to every class you will be fine. The class is not hard. No necessary to get the 8 edition of the textbook, 7th edition is OK.
Be on time! Godbey gets right to the point. Pay attention. Consider recording. Watch YOUTUBE videos. He will occasionally make errors, so if you don't understand, say so. This is somewhat advanced Excel work, so be prepared.
The class itself was very intense for a summer session. The textbook he decided to use at the time was not an actual textbook but instead was a "novel" that he and a friend wrote that lacked key concepts. Although Dr. Godbey was very knowledgeable on the subject, he often acted as if we were working in the same field as him.
I have attempted to take this class twice with other professors before taking it with Godbey and did horrible! This time around I have received A's on all of his test and quizzes! His teaching method is much more clear and uses video tutorials to explain every problem. I really appreciate his methods of teaching and would HIGHLY recommend him!!!
Good teacher! I loved the new book & the fact that he works ALL the problems out on his youtube channel. The wording in the book is a little different on quizzes & tests. He did curve the grades because overall the entire class didn't do so well on the final. Take him..he'll answer questions via email at all times of the day & night.
If you want to pass Finance on your first go round you MUST to this professor!! The class will not be easy as it requires a lot of practice to understand the work. However he explains everything through YouTube videos. Before the final my grade was a low C. I watched all the videos on YouTube to grasp the concepts and left the class with a B!
Very good professor. Has videos online and explains everything the way it should be explained. To me this class was really easy because it really is just a repetition of accounting concepts. If you studied for accounting you will do fine here.
The easiest class I took at GSU, only because the work you put in showed directly & immediately. You watch his YouTube videos and come to class for questions and take his chapter quizzes. He gives mock tests and finals that are exactly like the actual tests. I don't know how people didn't end up with an A in his class. The book is required.
He does a "reversed-class" which means that he doesn't teach much in class but expects you to work at home and bring him questions. His Youtube videos are really useful if you take time to understand stuff. Don't be afraid if you're bad at Accounting. He goes over the basics. There are 10 quizzes so you have to be on track through the semester.
He doesn't teach you at all. His you tube videos have nasty coughs and swallows in them that make listening much more dreadful. There are several errors in his videos. Other than his videos there is no further teaching. Worst teacher I've ever had. No books. Hardly any tests and no assignments what so ever. Good luck
Godbey does a great job of explaining concepts. He expects you to do the homework (which is more of a lecture through youtube videos) before class. You are then quizzed over the homework, and it consists of the exact same problems that were on the homework. If something is not clear, he uses all class to let you work individually or teach you.
Class is a reversed class. You're expected to listen to his lectures on youtube. You have quizzes every other class period, questions are similar to the homework questions. Class time is used to ask questions and do your work. Pretty straightforward class.
Learned ALOT from this class. It was probably one of the most useful real world skills classes I've ever taken. That said, it's a lot up to you to learn it. He starts every class by telling you what you're going to do that day and that's basically it. He goes around and helps but doesn't explain much at all.
Very straightforward class once you get used to the format. The videos that he makes for the problems are also very helpful. Pay close attention to those, the practice exams, and understanding how to do the problems and you'll do fine in his class. Doing the problem sets along the way will come in handy for the final exam. Repetition is the key.
I'm not the best math student by far but Godbey made me respect it. He's clear on his expectations and fair. Theres a quiz at the start of every class and weekly online quizzes from a book he wrote. You have to purchase to do quizzes. If you do the quizzes and online practices, you're good. Drops a quiz in class and online. Midterm and Final
I had taken the class with a different professor the prior semester who made it sound like rocket science so I dropped out. Dr G teaches with a flip class, you watch the videos then come to class to take a quiz each class period which forces students to actually do the work and think critically. Prepare very well for the final, you gonna be fine.
During lecture, he does move fast but he comes to everyone's desk to help them if needed. He grades slightly tough but He also lets you grade your own exam which opens negotiation if you can explain why you deserve the grade. Videos are super helpful but you should ALWAYS come to class. He is a great professor.
He is so lazy. Unorganized and doesn't provide reasonable material or instructions to complete tasks. He only teaches half the lecture time you pay for which seemed great at first but even in that time he rushes through and most of the class is lost and then he refers us to watch a video which doesn't exist. Yet he has high standards for results
The summer has been a mess, he hasn't taught at all really and the videos only semi-match for the first midterm after that well I hope you caught everything he blurted out in 5 min or you are screwed.
As a person, he is nice and funny. However as a professor he is HARD. unless you are good at excel, this class will be a challenge. He doesn't take attendance but if you miss class, good luck to you. Syllabus is unclear and half of the stuff you do in class is self-taught. he wants you to learn everything on your own! take another elective
Took his online class at Clemson and he didn't grade anything until the week of exams. Our class was told at the end of the semester "You can calculate your own grade. I will not do it for you." He was hard to contact and when he did respond he gave short rude answers. The only reason I got an A in this class was because I taught myself and chegg.
I took Prof. Godbey online at Clemson. We did not know our grade until the last day of classes. He told us that we could calculate our own grade that he will not do it for us. His emails were not professional at all if you asked a question and sometimes it took 2-3 days to get a response and by that time it was too late to turn in the assignment.
This dude was literally THE WORST professor I've had and I'm usually very forgiving to instructors. Never responds to emails , he doesn't have to do anything because the class is taught through a book online, he just posts videos of him solving the problems. Be prepared to put time into his class. MADE US TAKE FINAL WHEN THEY WERE OPTIONAL!!
Clemson btw, this dude sucks. He completely changed the format of the final because the grades were "too good" and he couldn't explain that to his boss. 4 homeworks a week that are annoying, use chegg. Tests take from hw, so just create an excel sheet with the formulas and easy A. Calculate your grade on your own because it will never be on Canvas.
This teacher is so frustrating. He does NOT respond to emails at all, does not give us good studying material, & is not an approachable teacher to ask for help. He waits until the very last minute to enter grades & extremely disorganized. His class was ridiculously easy but it seems like gives easy exams just because he's lazy. I got an A tho.
Easy A, but really bad professor. Discussions were worth 25% of our grade, and he did not grade any of them until the last week of class. All quizzes and test were open book. There was a group project with extremely vague instructions that was worth 20% of our grade. He seemed to have graded it and the discussions pretty easily though.
This is the second time I have taken him and I am once again so disappointed. This man is the most useless teacher on the planet. He moves way too fast, expects you to know everything prior to coming into class, and his exams are ABSURD. Do not take Excel Modeling with him it is miserable.
The maximum grade he'll give you is a 90. He doesn't consider anything perfect and uses that to justify his poorly thought out grading criteria. This is detrimental to anyone who is on the border of a letter grade. Do not take him.
This class is just so hard that I think it would be bad with any teacher but he also is nowhere to help. He doesn't really answer emails. Tests are long but exactly like homeworks.
Absolute worst professor I have ever taken. He doesn't teach you important parts of what you need on your exam, didn't post any course content, expects you to learn without showing you how to use functions. 3 tests weighed at 30% and a project for 10%. He grades based on his own opinion of how you did, not clear criteria. Dont take him.
Clemson here, this professor is a joke. Doesn't respond to emails, forces you to calculate your own grade (w/o explaining the grading scale), and only holds "class" once a week after you learn by yourself. I had to use chegg and build a 30+ page excel sheet to pass and we only passed the final by forcing him to put it online. Terrible teacher, nogo
Horrible Professor. Showed up late to an exam, made typos on 2 of the 3 exams, and throws in concepts he has never mentioned. His syllabus, which he didn't bother posting in the appropriate place, doesn't even have a layout of what topics will be covered on which dates. He doesn't post grades. You have to come in person to find out your scores.
Dude makes you buy his book, which is written in the form of a novel. All this really accomplishes is dumping metric f tons of information on you with zero explanation. He does have videos at the end of chapters walking through problems, however he doesnt explain half of the things he does. \
Hands down one of the worst professors I ever encountered. First of all he lets some graduate assistants teach his course who unfortunately in my case (Soyun Nam) were absolutely terrible in effectively and efficiently conveying concepts and information. Secondly, his explanations are so bad and so unstructured it is just painful to deal with.
The worst professor I've ever had. The class load was light, but we had multiple concerns about assignments not being posted. He would send short and rude emails back when emailing about dates/ issues and even the project's due date. Or he would never reply. Oh, he also won't give credit for missed assignments that weren't posted.
I'm taking finance to learn basic finance concepts, not to read a boring novel. I can't believe FI 3000 professors are having us read Godbey's book - it's a total scam. Also, if you look at the positive reviews on this page, they seem like they were written by the same person, with minor style alterations. Would rate 0 stars if I could
One of the most unorganized professor I have ever taken. Grades barely ever updated, online assignments (discussions / quizzes) posted in different places and forgotten about frequently. Assignments were not terrible difficulty wise and the midterm composed of questions from quizzes. "optional" group project, where you GSU shills for Truist
Easy class but Zero communication with professor and heavy grade on the Group project
I took FIN3060 as a Clemson student and this was an asynchronous online course. I do NOT recommend. Throughout the year, he was rude and uncommunicative with students. Also there was no way to know our grades. If you do get stuck with him, use the Excel for all homework and exams
Very unclear grading criteria and expects you to know stuff without teaching it
I took him for this class instead of financial modeling because I heard he makes that class so ridiculous. This class wasn't too bad because quizzes and midterms were based on readings or videos. You get three attempts on quizzes. Midterm and final questions come straight from the quizzes as it is all open note. There is an optional group project.
Thought it would be easy because it was online, I taught myself more than he taught me. He puts grades in the gradebook that "don't count" so you don't know your actually grade until the end of class, unless you figure it out yourself. Exams are nothing like the homework. Said to study homework problems for final then locked them on McGraw Hill.
Responds to emails promptly. You have an optional group project with other classmates and can earn extra credit by going to virtual FinTech events. You get multiple tries on the quizzes, and he composed the quizzes to make the midterm and final, so make a study guide. Incredibly dull, simple professor overall.
The class is relatively manageable, with weekly quizzes, and exams that are a combination of the quizzes (open book). five discussions and 4 responses each. However, there is a BIG semester-long group project if you want an A. He may not be the most organized individual, but is responsive to emails and knowledgeable.
He is a great professor! Some might say otherwise due to his not allowing phone usage during class time, but his intention is for your own good. He is the only professor who actually cares for his students. He make sure you understand before moving on to next concept. Highly recommend him!
Professor Godbey was extremely helpful this semester. His course was super informative and there is an optional group project if you would like an A.
Horrible professor. Takes 2+ weeks to respond to multiple emails, due dates are different on the syllabus and changes them as he wants. Multiple quizzes, discussions and 1 optional project if you want an A in the class. The final is nothing like any of the quizzes. Feels like he puts 1% into organizing these courses which sets us up for failure.
Professor Godbey is very tough, however he worked with me and helped me when I really needed it. Join all the zooms and ask questions when you have the opportunity. Very kind man.
Clear grading criteria. 10 quizzes, 5 modules discussions, optional opportunity project, midterm exam, and final exam that is live proctored and have to pay $19.75 to take final exam. Log in and check the class EVERYDAY to see what is due. Doesn't remind you what is due. Exam questions are from quizzes so record responses before submitting
Class structure is a mess. There are clear cut grading criteria but it is a mishmash of typical percentile grades and other requirements that can drop you a whole letter by not completing. The group project is "optional" but mandatory for an "A" which for online is a terrible idea. Modules feel disjointed and Prof. has issues replying to emails.
I will never take another course with him. Grading "bundles" were very unclear- if you end the course with an A but didn't do the opportunity project that's OPTIONAL, you won't receive an A in the course. I emailed him multiple times and never got a response. Had to pay $20 to take the mandatory final. I paid almost $600 to take this course too.
This dude was the course coordinator for my course. From what I understand he is inaccessible. He also structured the course where you have homework everyday. You will be dropped if you miss 4 classes (it doesn't matter what the reason is). He also created a mock final for our final exam. However the final exam was nothing like the mock??? Awful.
Imagine getting a high A on every assignment and an 88 on the midterm and receiving a B in the class and you'll have a basic understanding of how dumb and rigid his grade bundle system is. You will have to complete every single assignment near perfectly to get an A, he's super disorganized and the deadlines are inconsistent, not hard but avoid!
I took his financial modeling class and he basically didn't taught us anything. We were doing everything ourselves.i would never take this class again. I recommend nobody should take him.
Temporarily has this teacher and I see why his reviews are negative. He just talks for like 15 min without explaining how to do the problems and expects everyone to understand. Don't waste your time he does not teach.
All he does is have a zoom available once a week, other than that he does nothing. Assignments are posted at beginning of the year and all assignments for a chapter are due on the same date before tests. There is also a group element that makes no sense and is not graded but required. You should probably take this class in person instead of online.
This class isn't even hard, but the way he grades stuff is ridiculous. I was supposed to get a B because I did everything according to his grading system "bundle" and ended up getting a C. I repeat, do not take absolutely terrible.
If there are any other options for professors, take them. His grading system is rigid, not flexible, and quite honestly terrible. Course content is not difficult, however his weekly meetings are not engaging, nor are they helpful. Good luck if you must endure this.
I enjoyed the group project, but the class felt messy and disorganized. Quizzes closed early, had errors, and grading was confusing. The professor rarely replied to messages, even when following the syllabus instructions. I can't recommend this professor, but unfortunately there isn't another option for this required course.
This course was very disorganized, and it was difficult to reach the professor outside of class. All assignments are posted at the beginning of the course and are due before each exam. Class is out of points, so if you mess up one exam, you are screwed. An online Zoom lecture is recorded once a week, but you learn on your own, essentially.
He is awful on all fronts. Everything for his class is online, and quizzes/midterms/finals are essentially the same thing, so easy A there. Doesn't teach and group project dictates if you make a good grade. Just talks about nothing substantive and qualitative about his teaching, and the topics in class are nothing new and important to learn.
Class is very disorganized and the lectures are prerecorded and incredibly dull. Grading system is very irrational.
This was the last class I had to take before graduation. Never felt obligated to leave a poor review about a professor before. Grading system makes no sense. Professor acts inconvenienced when you email with questions. Although is very knowledgeable in the lectures, I would still recommend an alternative course/professor.
In 3 years, this was the worst professor I have ever had.I emailed him 4 times, and never got back any response. Lowest grade was a 95 and still got a B due to his so called grading bundle. There is a group project that determines if you get an A in the course, but with it being on online E core course the class has people from all over the state.
The professor lacks the ability to maintain an organized online course. Follows an arbitrary grading bundle policy that relies on completion of modules that he, on numerous counts, failed to even unlock or grade. Getting an A requires participating in an "optional" group project, for which he gave no criteria besides one side comment.Absolute mess.
Grading system is unnecessarily complicated and inefficient. Vague email responses. Has an optional project but it's necessary to receive an A. Project details are mentioned very briefly in one lecture, and there is zero content/guidelines about it anywhere on the class page. Feels that this professor doesn't care about his students.
