The class is easy, there's not a ton of homework, and he's a pretty nice grader, but he's super unorganized, doesn't plan lessons out at all, and rambles about random things most of the class. It's not hard to pass and his one-on-one discussions are great, but he doesn't really know how to teach a class. Also you can find all the books online

He's very picky about what he wants to discuss and wants students to discuss. It seemed like he was always looking for specific points to be made and seemed irritated when the students couldn't get there. Lots of different readings, very easy to find them all online. While participation was only 10%, he seems to greatly appreciate whoever talks.

For non-English majors, I can understand not liking his classes, but Dr. Gross is one of the most inspirational profs I have had at DePaul. I leave a lot of classes feeling I didn't learn that much. I left THIS class with tons of new perspectives. Tough work, but it's worth it if you're passionate about both history and writing.

Very passionate about the topic, this however led to a ton of rambles that were all over the place. I found this class very interesting but it does rely on class participation so if you don't want the class to drag PARTICIPATE. He is a very nice guy and there wasn't a ton of graded work, just the final essay and the oral reports.

Not horrible, but he's picky. Had a syllabus, but discussion was super disorganized. Cares more about the historical context rather than the actual text. Felt like I was in a history class rather than an English class. You need to have a strong understanding of British history. Majority of the books are from the UK. No diversity in texts.

Absolutely love Dr. Gross! If you want a really easy class this is not that. If you actually want to read books and learn how to analyze them then this class is for you. He can be a bit disorganized but I think that made it better and means we got to focus on discussions. Possible to get an A but you need to research and read beyond the material.
