A very clear concise professor. Assignments were hard, tests were alright.
Good prof. Needs new pants though;)
not very socialble but does his job very well
midterms are killer
kind of intimidating...nice though
Loved the class, tough but great prof!!
His sense of humor is HILARIOUS! hahaha he is a GREAT professor
Tough but fair and hilarious
Funny, interesting, loved this class, probably cause he was such a great prof.
Great Lectures, makes sense of difficult stuff.
worst prof i've had
Very nice person, very very smart, great professor
yikes, talks too fast, what does that say on the board???
If you don't think he is funny you are not smart enough to get his jokes.
Awesome teacher! Makes you work but is totally dedicated to students. So funny!
Breathing between sentences would help a lot!
Talks too fast, doesn't explain and treats us like children!
Lectures are hard to follow (even with the handout and p.p.), thinks we're dumb
Very bad lectures, speakes way too fast and is almost imposible to understand his points, nice smart guy, but needs to learn how to teach
Very good teacher, kinda messy writing, funny dude. Makes this an interesting course but you gotta do the work!
Very hard marker. Talks way too quickly, and I can never understand his writing.

He talks SO fast and isn't clear. His writing is basically illegible, and he gets irritated when people keep asking him to re-explain things because they can't read his writing or understand everything he's said.
Very interesting and fair. Talks pretty fast but can you blame him? You try explaining the history of human beings all in a single semester. He's very helpful and funny.
Very clear with his teaching, he always repeats things to make sure it is understood, yes his writing is horrible, but he admits to it and explains himself clearly. His tests are hard but he's fair!
Really great prof, goes fast but explains everything well. You really learn what he teaches you. Tests are fair, if you study hard for them you can do well.
Was in his class last year and he still remembers my name and says hello - I love that. He has a great sense of humour and he makes the material interesting... wish all my Anthropology profs were as dedicated and helpful as him.

I really liked him as a prof. His tests were easy as long as you did the readings, which were interesting. He explained concepts well. I never had done any biology before (only grade 10 science) and he explained that part really well. I pulled an A-
Very hard tests though marked them pretty easily. Very clear and interesting in class. Great prof.
WORST prof...just mean, boring, and hard marker
Midterms were difficult, pop quizzes all the time, ridiculous writing, and mean.
I have had Jonathan for a couple of classes now. The first, he was helpful, but difficult to approach. After that, I got to know him a bit better and found he was a very helpful and caring teacher. He was especially devoted in the field school.
Pretty good prof. Good sense of humour. A little hard to approach at first. Pretty hard marker. Interesting lectures.
Teaching Style is very effective, is VERY approachable, he just doesn't outright give you the answer... which is awesome! Is always up to date.. looking forward to another class!
WORST PROF & CLASS i have ever taken! His writing is soo messy, talks WAY TOO FAST and his pop quizzes are friggin ridiculous. Thought it would be easy 1rst year course but was VERY HARD. All it is about is evolution and biology! Is a control freak and does not help anyone!
Good guy. Tests are very hard so study well. Always prepared for class, and answers questions well. Pop quizzes suck though.
He can teach...but he needs to sure power point...cant read his writing
He knows his material well, answers questions well and though has terrible handwriting, speaks quickly and gives pop quizzes often he's still a good prof and as long as you do the readings you'll be fine, he doesn't pull questions out of nowhere, thought the tests are difficult if you don't study.
That is to say, by virtue of the fact that indeed Professor Haxell uses rather too many 'Haxellisms'in a quasi-authoritative manner. In other words, his vocabulary is the product of an MA from York University, not that it's a bad thing! And overall, he ranks a 15 out of 10 on the annoying scale.

Possibly the most annoying one yet. I felt like I was in boot camp or something

when I think of Jonathan, that is to say Haxell, its pertinant not to think to robust or to gracile, but to rate somewhere in the median. Indeed, Haxell is a difficult teacher. However, that is to say, At least his style is impecible?

An great teacher. One of the best I have had.
The worst professor ever. He is one to make his students feel bad about themselves. Don't even think about asking him a question, he'll give the most rude response and continue on with his lecture. One of the most egotistical teachers I've ever come across in all my years of school.

This guy is one of the hardest professors I've ever encountered. Honestly, it doesn't matter how long you prepare for his midterms or his final, it's almost impossible to get a decent grade. Tons of pop quizzes too!
Midterms and quizzes are fair, and at times easy as long as you study and understand the material. Is somewhat repetitive during lecture, but if you're listening you remember the material and don't forget it for the midterms. Most of material on exams are from his lectures.
Worst prof at WLU. Classes are boring, he is incredibly rude to students and not helpful at all. He makes students who ask for help feel stupid. The exams are random and difficult. Waste of time
VERY hard. He can be very mean, don't be late for class and don't stand up without permission!!! Watch out for flying chickens!! It was however an interesting class, assuming you could read the board. He is approachable as long as you have something worthwhile to say.
"Kitty doesn't love you. Kitty OWNS you." Awesome teacher, very fair and funny. He's also kind of a genius. But you do have to work HARD in his classes.
Talks way too fast and goes through slides like they're there for show
He speaks incredibly fast and clear, makes a lot of jokes. The exams/tests are fair, but you have to really know your stuff. One of the smartest and technologically savvy profs.
Haxell is like having a cross between TV's Dr. House MD and Weird Al Yankovic for a prof. On the one hand, he's funny as hell. On the other hand, well, think of having Dr. House for a prof! (IE expect to have something worthwhile to say when you go to talk to him, and expect to WORK in his classes)
although he speaks waaaay to fast i think that he does a pretty good job. his exams are killer though
Very full of himself, extremely hard, would not recommend his class
not a terrible teacher - actually interesting to listen to - but he's totally egotistical and not an easy marker. he may be helpful outside of class but i've been unable to get over his unapproachable demeanor
He's funny sometimes, but kind of unapproachable.
what can i say... Haxell is one of a kind. Funny, but Suble jokes. "honey, go and throw a rock at our dinner". I would recommened taking his class simply because of the content. He is rude to people i must say. But thats ok you only have to put up with him for 11 weeks
Professor Haxell is an extremely clear speaker. He is demanding but within reason. I came to university not to "get trained up for a job" but to learn and he caters to this. He also never singles out students, or relies on humiliation as a class control tactic. Excellent instructor. I will look deliberately for classes taught by him.
Not very personable to anyone, but if you ask him for help he will go over it for AGES until you understand. Expects a lot from students, but that's not a bad thing. Talk VERY quickly and it can be tough to keep up. I don't recommend missing a single class because you will miss so much material you will be in trouble for the exams.
If you attend each and every class, do all of your readings and study for the exams, you will do fine. He seems intimidating, and sometimes he isn't very personable, but just asking him will help. I would recommend taking his classes.
A professor you will either love or hate. He speaks quickly but repeats the same idea in many different ways. His tests can be difficult but they are always fair and it is possible to do well if you study. Seems unapproachable but is very helpful one on one. One of the most intelligent people I have ever met. Just be sure to attend class!
This professor gives a lot of information in class. His teaching style is particularly useful as he writes everything down for you to copy. He says points in a couple of different ways and repeats himself often, which is good for a thorough understanding of the material. His tests are quite hard, and textbook reading is essential.
My favorite prof by far.. he is a great teacher who has an answer to every question. If you attend every class your are guaranteed an A in the course.
This guy knows anthropology through and through. You can't ask him anything he doesn't know. Fun to listen to.
One of the most talented teachers I have ever met. The man knows everything, is incredibly witty and the tests are tough but fair. He seems kind of unapproachable and is sometimes kind of a **** if he senses that you're looking to coast but is very very helpful in clearing up things you don't understand. I will take any class he teaches.
Excellent professor! His lectures are structured so that note-taking is very easy, and he makes everything sound fascinating. Loves to talk to students outside of class. If you go to every class, you'll be well-prepared for his exams.
THE BEST!!!
Recently switched to the faculty of archaeology, Haxell is an extremely knowledgable prof. That said, his classes are extremely difficult and you will have to attend every lecture and read every reading. You will learn a lot, but you have to work for it!
Seems to think that he has something to prove...as if too many people told him he was dumb as a child and now he takes it out on the students.
Dr. Haxell for all intents and purposes is exactly what a university professor should be: extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and clear in his explanations. True, his assessments are on the difficult side, but entirely appropriate for the level of education. If you do your work in a timely fashion, you'll be okay.
extremelly high energy, may have a little bit of a napoleon complex but he is honestly a good guy and a passionate teacher
Complete Napoleon complex. The only reason he can fill a 3 hour class is because he says something a complicated way, then says "in other words" and then says it in an equally as complicated but different way. Prof Haxell doesn't teach, but he tells. Avoid him if you can.
Oh man. Its like, He hates you when you don't understand, then you ask for him to clarify, and he hates you more. I enjoy his jokes, but thats about it.
He is a great teacher! keeper me awake for a three hour long lecture every time. His test and exams are very hard and he is a very hard marker, but if you pay attention and study you will do fine. He is a very good teacher and very knowledgeable in his field.
Great professor! He knows his stuff for sure! He is also great to talk to but his classes can be hard. I am happy I finished with a B but if you do the work and keep up with the lectures you should be fine.
Haxell is actually a really good prof if you think about it. Ya you have to work really hard to get a good grade, and I have and I have gotten really good marks like A- and A's. In terms of getting your money's worth, he crams a lot of information into each so at least you're learning.
Unprofessionally rude, He choose favorites and is partial in his marking. Doesn’t take time to explain concepts and bombards students with information which rarely if ever gets remembered after the course. He talks and changes slides quickly and expects too much out of students on his 1.5 hour exams (which many do not finish or are forced to rush).
Haxell hated me b/c I was probably the worst student ever, yet overall he is in different to his students. weather he hates you or not, he will mark fair.He is harsh, hates questions, goes way too fast, gives too many readings. trick is copy all the slides, and just study off class notes instead of readings. you'll do well! good luck
He is a really smart teacher and while he expect you to be able to keep up you learn quite a bit in his class and he is really helpful if you go in for help!
Favourite prof at Laurier for Archaeology. He is hard but if you study the lecture notes the way he has written them you will do great on exams. By far one of the most knowledgable profs in what he teaches. You will definitely learn a lot in his courses!
Super hard marker, all exams are long and short answer and he's looking for REALLY specific answers. If you don't give him exactly what he's looking for you won't get marks. But if you're stugling with the class he's open to help you during office hours and will make time outside of that if needed
Marks are fair and if you put time and effort into things that does reflect. However he has GOT to slow down in lectures. Fires slides off like a machine gun and talks a mile a minute which makes it difficult to keep up... on the bright side he loves to see you in office hours to explain what you didn't understand in class.
Haxell goes Very fast in lectures, making kt hard to keep up notes wise, but as long as you take decent notes, you're golden. his exams are difficult, and you will go to the literal last second trying to finish, but he is a fair marker, so if you put in the effort you will do fine. If you ask questions after class, he is always willing to help you.
Does move pretty fast, and knows his stuff. I wouldn't consider myself the smartest guy out there but I worked hard and studied what he taught in class and did my readings and got a A-. His exams are tough but fair and if you study properly you will do well.
I hated Haxell when I first had class with him. I thought he went too fast and didnt care about his students. This changed when I started taking charge of my own education. He expects alot but he is one of the only profs I actually have learned from. He is also really good at explaining things; go to his office hours
Terrible prof. He's too fast and mumbles on about necessary things. He also doesn't post anything online which is a hassle for students when trying to figure out where they stand in the course. The course is interesting and he is a smart prof but he needs to slow down and get to the point. Organized slides would be appreciated as well.
talks to fast, confusing, boring
Haxell is a brilliant guy. But man.. are his tests ever hard. Not very many evaluations, so the tests are worth a huge amount of your grade. Most people seem unable to complete the tests because they are so long. Very long short answer portions, and usually an essay question at the end. Know your stuff and study extensively if you want to pass.
Professor Haxell is extremely knowledgeable and very helpful, but you have to ask for the help, he won't seek you out. His marking is very difficult but appropriate for the education level.
Talks way too fast, mumbles and is rude.
Impossible class, very boring lecture. The material was way too all over the place. Would spring on pop quizzes at the end of 3 hour 7-10 lectures. Tests were impossible. Very unapproachable prof, insanely condescending. Avoid taking his class by any means possible.
Nice professor and is super helpful! A little intimidating at first but is actually funny and approachable as the semester goes on. Tests are super hard though and very heavy (also weighted heavily). Pop quizzes (not weekly) that are mainly on the textbook. The material is very interesting but the tests and exam are so hard. Responds to emails fast
Jonathan is amazing. His class is extremely hard and is not to be made a joke of. He challenges you to become better and to try your best. This course is not an easy A. He is one of the most passionate, amazing professors that I have had the opportunity to learn from, you just need to reach out, but if you do he is always willing to help you.
My fairly young aunt fell into a coma the first week of class, had to leave the province to see her and she ended up dying. Every Prof responded to emails and was helpful except Haxell. Wouldn't send me the syllabus because he gives out physical copies in class, wouldn't respond to help review material. Had to drop because of all this. Not ok.
