lol funny guy, hillarious accent. great prof.
WORST PROF EVER. Just copies notes from txt to over heads (which are blurry and cant be read) and just reads those at 100 words / min to the class. And never has time for questions
Very nice guy, quite funny, but he's very hard to follow...
I went to his class once...he was like a tape recorder..I did not understand a word he said..funny lookin' guy
This guy has the funniest look ever!, He isn't good at teaching algebra but gives a good laugh for an hour. Come and join the comical algebra with BuHU... u won't regret it!
nice guy, too bad I might fail
OK teacher but he overuses overheads.
not even worth it
Dont ever take this prof's class. Not good at teaching and very difficult exams. You've been warned
I think he is great, he teaches for the exam and tries everything in his power to help you. I have never seen a prof. who cares more for his students.
WORST PROFESSOR AT RYERSON. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
Very disappointing choice by Ryerson. This prof is difficult to understand and follow, poor course outline, poor teaching abilities. A waste of time and money. If you really want to learn physics take physics with Prof I. Deac !!
Excellent prof. Made the course extremely interesting and clear as compared to other profs.
He is EXCELLENT and very knowledgeble in physics. Very Clear and helpful in the course. The person who commented before me must have failed the course badly to make such a grossly unfair statement to a good professor like him.
Very hard to understand, doesn't answer questions and gives unfair exams, He is really unable to translate his lectures to students...an unacceptable prof
I'm probably gonna fail this class but it would have been a whole lot worste if it was a different teacher. I think he's a great teacher, so far my fave at Ryerson. If you actually listen to what he says, it will make sense. The class is just too long though.
He is a great teacher and very knowledgeable, however, his tests are hard and somewhat unfair.
he's great!!!!!!!!!
HORRIBLE PROF dont even attend class and you can do better
his tests are really tricky.
How can his questions be tricky when almost all problems in exam are from assigned hw and exercises. Be fair to him. You can't find better prof than him!!! He is so so helpful, clear and positive about everything. The whole class can verify it.
He is great and THE BEST!!! Test questions directly from textbook. Very helpful and easy! Wish there more prof like him!!!
Simply great! Lucky me totake his course. So very helpful and understanding to con ed students.
He is just amazing! He helps the students so much that he can practically call everyone of us by our first name in a class of over 80.He makes math so fun by relating it to physics and human relationship. So far my fave at Ryerson.
He knows his stuff really well and he makes physics interesting and easy to understand! One of the best professors at Ryerson!
I was a little worried about taking Math class, let alone Advanced Function. I come from an art background and I know nothing about math. If you're the kind of person who needs good analogies to compare to when dealing with math, this prof is for you. He is witty, hilarious, easy going, passionate about his work, and he is nice to students. A+++
THE BEST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. IF YOU HATE MATH, THIS TEACHER WILL MAKE YOU LOVE IT!
funny guy. sometimes hard to understand. answers questions. loves talking about girlfriends/boyfriends lol
always late in the class..cannot control the class...overall not a good prof
Worst professor I have ever had. He does not care to control the class and just talks through the noise making it very difficult to pay attention and understand. He is very negative and he does not seem to care about the students one bit. Sometimes he will start class on time and other times he will show up 10 minutes late.
Not the best prof but not bad. our class did bad on the first midterm, he allowed us to make the first test worth 20% less and move it to our final test. I think he is a fair teacher, people did bad cause they were never in class.
Great professor! He's always on time and is very positive about answering questions and makes physics easy to understand. The course is hard but I think he's a very fair teacher. I know some people who do badly and complain but that's only because they skip class or don't pay attention and don't study...
Jaws and Chronus are awesome. But where is the mouse? This teacher is kind of ridiculous most of the time, starting 15 mins early for some reason ("Commuter's University" - yeah right), and overall does not seem to care much for the students' concerns. Anyways, at least this is his first 'hot' rating.;) hahaha
This course it not easy. People skip class and do very poorly. His tests are kinda hard. Class avg first test was 57%, other prof teaching this had 70s avg.
Completely Useless. Teaches word by word from textbook with no additional input. Doesnt control class, talks through the noise. Spends 20 minutes each class trying to fix clickers. Better off skipping class and teaching yourself. Loads of sexual innuendo.
He explains through his notes which are impossible to read ! I never understood a word he said. Just a very boring class to be in. Waste of my time and money. Ryerson should look for a new prof to replace him !
The worst prof ever @ Ryerson, I don`t know how the faculty keep him in the field a all !!
I got a 82 in the class, but he is so bad at teaching. No point of attending class, all he does is read off the powerpoints like a robot with an horrible accent.
Great Prof, honestly one of the nicest human beings on the planet. If you're willing to learn he'll help you alot. Plus he basically tells you what questions are on the exam :) Overall an amazing prof a must have for first year!
He is good and like to help but he is too much toward self study and for example he is telling the teacher assistants to just write the solutions in tutorial and there is too less of explanation specially after mid-term.
Took a subject that could be so interesting and ruined it. The most boring exhausting lectures ever.
An interesting character, talks fast, but if you actually listen you'll see that he is a good instructor. Quite funny aswell, which is nice!
The prof is ok, quite a character in lec, decent during office hours. In lec, very fast talker - around 50% are random but somewhat entertaining comments, The other half is good synopsis of physics material. Not good at answering questions, in fact if you are at the back you will struggle to get his attention.
one of the best profs I've ever had! made me go from hating physics to being able to tolerate it.
Not encouraging, doesnt take interest in his topics and is only concerned with getting through his slides as fast as possible. Tries to joke but seriously, we're university students, and he doesnt view us as such, jokes are all immature and unnecessary.
Worst professor for Physics: Mechanics in Ryerson. I had to go to another professor to actually understand the content and I studied hard o_O
Just attend the lectures and read the textbook. His tests are entirely multiple choice, and directly from his lecture slides. Theres no reason you can't do well in his class. Nice guy as well.
I was excited to jump into this physics course and be interested. Unfortunately I was stuck with an oriental professor who has very boring powerpoints which are created using examples from previous textbooks. Ryerson did not even sell textbook he wanted, so I needed to go out of my way and order it from Amazon. god knows when it wil arrive...
Doesnt provide any info on midterms or exams. All his questions though are straight form the homework which come from the example questions in the textbook.
He is a very bad professor. You'll show up to his class, he'll just read his lecture slides that are posted online and are full of errors. Semi-Thick japanese accent, and course material is unrelated to the required labs. You won't learn much from him. It's all on you in this course so be wary. You learn more from newborns then from this professor.
He was a bad prof, He tried to help! but he couldn't !
It's like being at an auction in Chinatown, talks extremely fast, hard to understand and not very clear, and doesn't care at all for student input
Clearly knows physics very thoroughly, but is often very condescending, and doesn't seem to understand how young people think. Very unforgiving of the fact that some material wasn't covered in previous course that is important prerequisite knowledge for his course; acts as though it's the students' fault that they weren't taught the material.
Long story short, you'd be better off reading his slides yourself and make your own notes. Every lecture he literally reads off his slides, and spends too much time by doing so. Always unprepared for class, spending a lot of time just to set up the iclicker.
Very condescending. Reads from the slides. Does not post slides online until after lecture most times, and often forgets to post them until the students have reminded him several times. Is knowledgeable, but not helpful. Would not recommend taking PCS130 in his section.
Terrible Prof. Couldn't understand a single word that came out of his mouth. Very boring lectures, and doesn't care about his students at all. Many mistakes in his slides, and he sometimes doesn't even post them until the students remind him to. Overall, just a very terrible professor. If it's possible, switch out of his class as soon as you can!
Late to class. He says funny random jokes about boyfriend and girlfriend. Textbook useless because slides are so thorough showing steps, but typo with numbers. He only reads the slides word by word at a slow pace. Class is just a repeat of grade 12 physics in high school. Homework is on web assign. Test questions from web assign. Get to leave early
Forgot to mention that the labs are unrelated to material learned in lectures. For example I had to learn about circuits on my own to prepare for a lab and its quiz. The labs were not on the test and exam.
the worst professor i have had uptil now. change your classes if you have it with him. he just reads from his slides and does not care about the students at all.
One of the most enjoyable mathematics classes I've ever taken. He is always happy to help but you've got to speak up and ask for it or else he'll assume you're following the lecture.
The worst prof i've had at Ryerson, he's not clear at all about what he wants and is rude to students. This course was supposed to be an easy elective and turned out to be hardest course. If you have him, switch out ASAP
If you're not a science/engineering student, you might have a moderately tough time adjusting with him. He's very straightforward and funny at times and explains everything clearly. Tests are fair and if you go through and understand his slides, you're set to get a good grade in the course.
They dont call him Dr. Hu for nothing. Although he always tries to defy the laws of physics but he helps you will all your physics problems.
He's doesn't care about students and will often get irritated really quickly. His tests are confusing and there's no way you can get part marks. If you have him switch sections or drop out ASAP
a midterm, a final exam and some homeworks. pretty straight forward for exams and if you listen to him, can easily get an A+
Was funny at first. Became super dry quickly. Really boring during lectures and just reads off slides. Most of the class doesn't pay much attention or just sleeps. He reads the example problem solutions off the slides which he wastes a lot of time on. He was behind most of the course. Just do the textbook problems and old tests and you'll be fine.
He definitely knows his stuff and tries to communicate it the best he can BUT: He spends a lot of time saying that it's our fault if we fail, not his fault. He has no control over the class and carries on with lectures when students are talking amongst themselves. Examples he gives to explain content aren't relative and are often confusing.
He is very passionate about physics and tries his best. If you show up to class and do all the assigned work he is very accommodating. He isn't as easy going with students that don't attend his lectures. Long story short, stay on his good side if you want to pass ;)
He doesn't seem to give breaks in class (in regular two hour lectures), and starts on the hour instead of 10 minutes past (against Ryerson policy). Moves just too quickly through reasonably complex topics to be fair (you can ask questions, but he often just repeats what he said again), and while he's a passionate, nice guy, he's a poor professor.
Dr. Hu incorporates his in- depth knowledge and proficiency in such a way that you would think twice before taking PCS 211 with him. In other words, acids are corrosive.
best guy ever changed my life
I attend class everyday and had emailed the professor about something I was unsure of and was given the rudest reply TWICE. I was extremely polite and professional in the email and was given the rudest reply. Very rude and difficult class.
Okay first year students. Don't believe what people are saying about this prof. Dr. Hu is Super nice and funny. He doesn't care if you show up to his class or not. He does give a lot of homework+Labs+Tutorials. His teaching could be a little better because its hard to understand him at times due to his accent. but overall very passionate.
He is disorganized when teaching lectures (i.e. ch1 slides do not equal ch1 tb). He teaches all around the place and basically reads off the slides. However,I recommend attending lectures as he tells you what to focus on for tests. 2 tests (30 MC only) and 1 essay but weighting is high so you better try hard.
Does not stop people from talking in his class, which makes it difficult to focus in his lectures. Goes through concepts and examples very quickly because people are talking. Sense of humor is ok at first, but gets old quickly. Can be a bit disorganized at times. Others said he was helpful during office hours. Overall, not very effective.
Although this Prof knows his stuff his teaching style is atrocious. He generally reads off the slides, does not explain properly or shows how to get through or attempt math problems. Gets angry at students for not understanding, not getting answers correct or participating. His tests are nothing like what he taught in class. Good freaking luck.
Ah yes, Jonathan "Use your mouth as a clicker" Hu. His in depth knowledge about iclickers and his aptitude for teaching is remarkably unique along with his witty humor enhances the learning experience so much so that you would be better off reading the textbook instead.
Get used to hearing ah in the beginning, middle and end of every sentence that he decides to say, pretty much just get ready to hear ah every 5 seconds. Hes pretty much a joke, no one took him or his lecture seriously. Every was forced to go because of the clickers, which he didnt even know how to operate. Hes good if you go to his office.
He knows everything but if he can use explain in writing instead verbal it would be great
Professor Hu tries to simplify the course. He is clearly knowledgeable about astronomy but sometimes fails to communicate concepts clearly. To do well, you must attend and take notes on his lectures. The tests are fair and he marks the report easy. Offers bonus marks at the end of the semester.
His lectures are a joke and his accent is extremely hard to understand. Shouldn't be allowed to teach. Avoid at all costs.
Don't take him.
Nice person. Horrible teacher. Do not take this with him. Very disorganized. Says one thing and does another. Difficult to understand.
HORRIBLE and UNAPPROACHABLE, Has problems starting and ending Iclicker sessions, Unsympathetic when it comes to WebAssign(most teachers give longer deadlines and shorter versions but this guy gives shorter deadlines for more questions). The only jokes he had were "girlfriend-boyfriend" jokes which were very lame. AVOID IF POSSIBLE
Dr Hu is the worst professor ever. He went way too quickly during lectures, which were basically just reading from his slides. Examples were not thoroughly explained. That was exactly why 2/3 of the class decided not to come to his lectures. Never gonna be in his class ever again.
Every week, few students dropped out of class. He cannot teach. At. All. If you ask him a question, he cannot answer it. Or his answer makes no sense. He gives you a bunch of questions and "solutions" that are hard to follow. If you ask him to explain, you will end up more confused. Expect to learn nothing from his lectures. You're on your own.
STAY AWAY !!! (These two words will sum it up). If you want to feel like you are alone, and if you want feel like you have to read the textbook, and online MasteringPhysics videos than this prof is for you. Twice in lecture, he taught the material incorrectly. Once from his own lecture slides, and second from a textbook question. RUNAWAY!
worst professor, tells you to study certain sections and specific topics but then brings something completely different on the midterms/final.
He literally just reads off the slides and he comes across as very abrasive. There's 1% participation from just answering polls (whether answers are correct or not doesn't matter). Even though I felt decent in terms of understanding concepts, with him I just feel dumb and incapable. If you have him, you'll end up self-teaching the course.
Sometimes hard to understand accent, but great teacher you can tell he is very passionate about the subject. Tough exams tho.
I took this course as an audit student with prior knowledge about the subject. Lecture notes are inaccurate and facts are wrong. Contacted prof for few questions and was told that I should not worry about those questions as they won't be in exams and read book and internet if I want to go into details. Beats around the bush if sm1 ask Q in class
Professor Hu has a lot to work on. His accent is hard to understand but thats ok, he goes very fast during lectures which are not recorded and most of the time he wont answer your qs. He is mean and rude if you ask a question that has been asked and his tests are harder than what you study in class. Avoid him at all cost (honest rate).
Terrible prof, avoid him at all costs. His lectures arent clear, if u ask him a question he just dodges it or tells u to google it, his tests contain information that is either inaccurate or that he didnt even teach, his multiple choice questions are just evil, Uses textbook material but doesnt say which chapters or pages u gotta read
I took this course because people said it was a bird course but boi not with this professor. I feel like the actual course isn't too bad but this professor is so disorganized and terrible at explaining content that it makes the course hard. When confronted with issues, the professor put the blame on the students. Overall, NOT a bird course...
If you want to take astronomy do not take his class by any means. Expects too much out of his students for an astronomy intro course.
Horrible lectures, does not answer questions in class, extremely rude and uncaring. I only showed p to the first 2 weeks of class and never again, meaning you will have to teach yourself to pass. Would most definitely recommend a different professor. Good luck.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. Was very negative that we would have to drop the course if we did not understand. Very rude too. I ended up dropping cause going to his lectures just made me sad
Sometimes it's hard to understand him however he is a very passionate professor. He can be negative at times but who doesn't hate their life in engineering anyways....
Don't expect to pass this class by just going to the lectures and reading off the slides. Professor Hu explains the lecture content pretty well, but reading from the textbook is what's going to get you a good grade.
I dropped out of the course midway. He is a horrible teacher. Very rude, condescending to people asking questions, honestly incomprehensible when he talks unfortunately, which makes it hard to understand what's being taught, terrible with zoom. I basically self-taught myself the entire material. I think majority of the class dropped out midway
Three years of going to Ryerson, this has got to be the most frustrating and non-accommodating professor I have ever met. His zooms are always locked and starts lectures way before Rye Time; if you're late and miss when he let's people in, good luck getting in! He gets mad when you have another opinion or give an incorrect answer.
This prof if by far my worst prof, he is very passionate but honestly i did not understand a single word from him. his zooms are not recorded and he speaks way too fast. Good Luck with him (You're gonna have to read two different books).
avoid like the plague. that's all
My summary of the class/prof in sentences: (sarcasm) 1. Don't question anything, the prof is always right and you're always wrong. 2. Your laptop died during a test? That's too bad. F. 3. Don't ask questions about anything, you'll disrupt the lecture. 4. By the end of this class, you will learn to hate astronomy.
Hu is okay, can't really understand him and he's always yelling at people for asking stupid questions. He cannot figure out zoom or iclickers (which can be both good and bad). Follow the textbook and you'll be fine, it's not really a difficult course.
Redefines the definition of BAD teacher. Honestly have no clue how he has anything above a 1/5. He looks for reasons to take off marks, argues with you and only answers maybe two questions per lecture before he snaps at you and ignores your question. His lectures were useless and I learned everything by reviewing Springer's lectures.
IF YOU HAVE THIS PROF, JUST RUN PLEASE. He is the definition of a BAD teacher. When you ask him a question, he'll shout at you and make you ask yourself why you ask that question. If you have another prof available, get that prof, just not this prof istg save yourself. You will not be able to learn anything from this guy.
Overall, I enjoyed taking his class. He is always willing to help if you ask him for review material or extra help. iClicker was optional but the questions were helpful when reviewing. Tests were fair and as long as you understand the lectures, you'll be good. He does get annoyed when no one answers his questions but other than that, he's okay.
He seems harsh because he can get impatient when nobody answers his questions but is a genuinely nice person one-on-one. He won't go to you to help you out, you have to go to him yourself if you want it. If you put some effort into making formula sheets and understanding concepts, you should do relatively well on the tests. 2 midterms, 1 final.
Your going to pass his class, just send an email after failing and. he will bless you
Terrible professor. The thick accent already makes him hard to understand. He also ripped Dr. Springer's slides changed the font to something less clear, and taught the course poorly. Wouldn't recommend going to his lectures at all, waste of time.
