I do really well in my classes, but he doesn't test fair. He tests on some things that he doesn't go over, and tries to trick you.
He's all over the place when he teaches and you really have to pay attention and take note on what he's saying as he draws pictures, otherwise you won't be able to depict them later. A study group is necessary to pass the class.
One of the best teachers I've had in science. People complain about how he tests, but biology is a tough subject and it requires a lot of studying so the teacher can't be blamed for that. He is willing to help anyone and always keeps the lectures interesting.
Best biology teacher I've ever had. Doesn't put up with nonsense and covers everything that's on the tests. Highly recommend him if you want to know your biology for the MCAT.
It was a tough class but I'm glad that I took it from Professor Karpel. The tests were hard but if you study you'll get a decent grade. He is always available to talk to offer help or answer questions and is very willing to work with you.
The class is clean-cut and simple. Come to lecture, take notes, do assignments, and study for the tests. The material is presented in a structured and concise matter, and all material on the test is covered in the lecture. Karpel is extremely enthusiastic, and makes a very good effort to help and clarify to students. Class was enjoyable.
Prof Karpel requires students to do a lot of studying, but it is not busy work it is all very applicable to both class and the real world. I came away from this class with a great understanding of the concepts he taught. He was hard but fair. He does get frustrated by dumb questions, but he is happy to answer good questions.
Told us he had a bad reputation up front, not true. He said people often complained he tested on things he didn't teach, but I did the entire class without the text book and aced everything. I think that really speaks for the quality of his lectures. I thought it was easy, even covering all the material in the short summer session.
The first few weeks he was intimidating. Not the class to take if you want an easy A for Gen. Ed. credit. However, he is an excellent teacher. He does have an attitude but he wants you to learn the material, he wants to help you. He frequently encourages going into office hours. Study groups would be a good idea, this class takes a lot of time.
If you think Dr. Karpel's tests are "tricky" then please reconsider becoming a doctor, perhaps you are just not cut out for higher education. He gives you the tools to take the exam. If you can't figure out how to use them then it is a reflection of you not him. Grades are earned in his classes.
Super knowledgeable and nice professor. Very willing to help, and his love of Biology made the lab super fun. He needs to stop putting himself down though.
Best bio professor I ever had! He pushes you to learn and prepares you for success in upper division science. If you want an easy A don't take Karpel he makes you work hard but thats because he genuinely cares for his students, and loves to help students who meet with him during office hours. I didnt use the book much though just study lecture notes
This was my first class as a college student. I should have taken bio 1010 instead of this class meaning that this class was teaching things that were way over my head. However Karpel sat with me for an hour everyday after class to go over the material with me again. EXTREMELY HELPFUL professor.
In my opinion his ego gets in the way of his teaching and grading. He seems to be a decent guy, but he is certainly not my most favorite teacher. He doesn't really care if you're failing because it is clearly all your fault. He seems to also think that if you don't visit him in office hours about work that you don't care. Good luck!
The class was extremely hard. My advice: get a good study group together and meet on a regular basis.
He treats every student in there as if they were a biology major, even though clearly some of us are there just because it's a prerequisite for something else that probably won't even relate to this course. Also treats the class as if it were a three credit course rather than a one credit lab, tons of work, especially research papers.
If you do not make a good first impression, he will not like you. He has super hard tests and expects you to read. He's a great professor if you need a hard Biology Class. But, if you are just looking to for the credits, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM!!!!
First class I ever struggled with. Lectures are good, but he doesn't test you on anything that was covered in lecture. Treats you as if you're a biology major, even though most aren't. Way hard for a prerequisite class. Nice guy, just not clear on the material.
Very tough professor. Do not take the class from him if you are just looking for pre-credits...
Don't take this class without a background in either bio or chem unless you're happy with a C or D. He's full of himself but he knows his stuff.
Before taking Karpel's class, I was so scared because everyone told me how hard he was and to be happy if I get a C+ in that class. It's true that his class is very difficult BUT it's not impossible. I received an A- in the class and haven't taken a bio class since freshman year of high school. Go to class. READ the text book. Go to office hours!
Dr. Karpel can be tough, but if you go to class and do the work you'll be fine. He can be a jerk sometimes and makes you not want to ask questions. Just do the reading beforehand.
He told me he didn't have time to help me and that I needed to ask someone else. He is a harsh grader and tests are ridiculous, might as well memorize the whole book.
I honestly thought he was fine for lab. Pretty laid back during lab, had about 5 quizzes for the reading over the semester. Lab manuscripts can suck, but he's willing to help. Really, just go to lab, ask him questions and don't put off the homework.
Dr. K is a great professor. He expects you to work it out in your mind & make the connections, despite the lack of homework. If you actually study and apply effort you will be fine, but I've seen too many classmates blame him for their short-comings. He is smart & knows his stuff. Seek his help on any concepts you miss the first time.
It's lab so only saw him once a week, most of the time wouldn't go the whole 2 hours. He was pretty clear on what he expected for each lab.
I did more work for this lab than for the lecture class. You are required to read and take quizzes on the reading. The lab reports are graded very harshly and he takes off points very easily. If you go see him he is willing to tell you where you can improve but he does expect A LOT.
The teacher was amazing He is a good lecturer and if you visit him enough he will help you so much
Karpel is a wonderful professor who really cares about his students. If you take this class for an easy way out you will have a hard time. if you do the readings, quizzes and, oh I don't know, actually TRY then you can get a C or higher no problem. He is always open to talk and offers a lot of extra credit. I loved his class
His exams are lecture based, but there are reading quizes. He lectures on what's correct and then asks what's wrong and there's 3 answers.
The exams are horrible, they have nothing to do with what is learned in class or in the textbook and are incredibly confusing. He does his best to make the questions as hard as possible. If you don't know everything about the material you won't pass. Don't take him unless you plan to dedicate your semester completely to this course.
I loved Karpel as a person but he was a difficult professor for me. This is one of the toughest courses I had and most of the time I had to go reread the material because I couldn't understand it the way he explained it. He's a really funny, and he encourages you to come to his office hours.
Dr. Karpel is one of the best professors I've experienced, and a total hotty. I'm serious to all of you freshmen in gen bio: Take it from him. He's a fair grader and actually cares about the outcomes for his students. He gets weirdly defensive about student assessments though- I don't see why he cares as he's got tenure. The Karp's great.
Dr. Karpel is a great professor who is genuinely willing to help you succeed. All exams are based on lecture and are multiple choice as well as critical thinking. Don't rely on lecture, be sure to read the textbook. This class isn't difficult, if you fail, it's probably because you didn't prepare yourself. Do the work and study and you'll be fine.
Karpel is a really great professor. DON'T skip out on his class-his lectures are key to passing his tests. He's a really great teacher, and he gives you everything you need to study for his exams. If you put in the effort, you'll pass this class. Don't miss the reading quizzes-it'll kill your grade. If you show him that you really care, he'll help.
I really enjoyed Dr. Karpel's class. His teaching style is very clear and straightforward and makes taking notes easy. It was a bit challenging, but if you do the homework and read the textbook you'll be fine.
I loved his class he seemed very involved with students and cared
He is a tough professor, however, you will learn the material. He sets a good basic building block for further biology classes. Highley recommend if you have a lot of biology classes ahead of you. Be prepared to study. Everything you are tested on will be things he has written on the board or discussed in class.
This teacher sucks. Do not take him. If you ask him questions he makes you feel so dumb and does not fully answer your question. He says that he wants to help but when you go to ask him questions all he does is bring you down. I would 100% not recommend this professor.
Karpel is a professor that gives great lectures, but if you are lost, sorry bud, you are doomed. The material is not hard and you think you understand it, but no. Walk into that testing center for exams and you know absolutely nothing. I worked my tail off studying several hours a day, meeting with tutors and the professor and I still failed.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. He makes you work for a good grade. You HAVE to go to class. If you don't you will fail everything he gives you because he lectures literally all class. Most of what he taught me has stuck though, so if you want to learn General Biology well, and are willing to work for it, take Karpel.
Would not recommend. He is mean and crude. He lectures the whole class period and if you go to his office hours and ask questions, he makes you feel stupid and laughs at your lack of understanding. He cant answer questions very well. He has an outline for his lectures and thats all he knows to teach so dont bother asking broader questions.
He was a great professor ! Love this guy!
Despite having already taken Biology courses in the past, Karpel explains basic principles in different ways that actually really helped me to understand better. He gives specific feedback on lab reports, and is very willing to help during the actual lab if you go up and ask. Disregard negative predispositions, embrace nerd humor, and lab is good.
Good man. Wasnt in love with teaching style.
I tied to have an open and optimistic attitude towards him but it just got harder and harder as time went on. He is not someone Id take again just for the fact that if you dont understand a concept instead of helping you he grills the class and tells us that we will fail and fall behind if we dont study for hours a day.
This professor is very strict and says he likes it when people come to his office hours, but then gets mad when you show up for help. One of the hardest classes taken ever.
I really liked learning from this professor, he knows what he is talking about. A lot of what is on the test is from lectures as well as your reading from the GRL. If you don't like active learning then I suggest taking this class from another professor. What you get out of this class is what you're willing to put in. Everything I learned stuck.
Karpel is a jerk, but he knows it. He's a great professor, organized, keeps to the test/quiz schedule outlined in the syllabus, and has a GRL website that's a great review (and easy points). I learned so much in this class and if I did it again I would definitely take Karpel. He even lowered the bar for what was an A in the class. Very fair.
He gives you extra work so you know the content. It's worth the extra work to actually apply what you're learning instead of just memorizing it. I can see how people wouldn't like his personality, but personally, I think he's really great. Explains things very clearly. I never left class confused about what I just learned. Clear with expectations.
the teacher is very rude
Professor Karpel is a very unique person. He's extremely smart and expects a freshman biology class to be to the level of understanding that he is at. His tests are impossible, regardless of how hard you study. He writes the homework and test with the intention to trick and confuse you and won't help you when you reach out for help.
Karpel's way of teaching may not always click with everyone, but for me, he is very clear and detailed in his lectures. I always had a good understanding of what we went over by the time class ended, and his online GRL assignments are great for studying. Very friendly, funny, and I would recommend anyone to take his class.
He was very knowledgeable about his topics, however I just wasn't able to receive the information in the way he taught. I went to class everyday and still struggled to do well because of the way he taught. His exams are also very challenging, and no matter how long or hard you study, they are still very difficult (so don't just blow it off).
Karpel is the biggest jerk you will ever meet, the lecture isn't clear and then the exams are so confusing. I had to work my butt off to get an A. Not worth it, there are way better professors at SUU.
Expects everyone to know exactly what to do, but it is clear that this is a first class and people won't know what to do by memory. Doesn't make all instructions clear, and doesn't give much feedback. Unless you are better at leaning by teaching yourself, I do not recommend taking him.
Karpel is a pretty good professor. He is willing to help you if you go into his office hours. The exams were doable if you did the online GRL questions and I found the PAL study groups really effective. He drops your lowest exam score including the final so I didn't even have to take the final thanks to this guy. Go to class as it's lecture heavy.
He is great at lecturing, and making the material as clear as possible. There are a decent amount of quizzes that can be a little difficult if not prepared. He has his own online textbook that is mandatory to read, and it is honestly a great study tool, but make sure you keep up with it or you will spend hours catching up.
Very difficult and lectures were very dry. May be a good professor for some but his teaching style was very difficult for me to understand. I would highly suggest getting the book and doing a lot of learning yourself.
Karpel is a good professor no matter what anyone says. Pay attention and study hard and you'll do well. Yes he sometimes rambles and isn't the most specific lecturer, but read the textbook and you'll understand the material. Also, he will take as much time as you need to understand outside of class hours.
Dr. Karpel is a good professor!!! Just do your work and pay attention. He expects a lot but he makes that clear from day 1. He doesnt sugar coat anything. He gives a lot of easy points from the online textbook readings. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Karpel is an awesome professor. He is very knowledgeable and I learned so much in his class. I didn't think this class was extremely difficult, but you definitely have to work hard for an A and keep up on your studying. I suggest studying every day to make sure you know all the material, and see him in his office if you have questions!
I took his class for lab, and it was super nice. I didnt get the full experience of him though due to COVID, so Im not sure how it will be in later years for him. All I can say is the course was a breeze and he was entertaining when I actually had him in person. Only negative was the work could be difficult due to lack of explanation.
The only thing that saved me in this class was the PAL group - I otherwise would have probably failed. Professor Karpel is all over the board when he letures (literally) and it is very hard to take organized notes. He explains content well, but then you see totally different material on the test. Just make sure you study the cell concepts homework!
Took my capstone with him and Ive been warned by many students against Dr Karpel my whole education throughout SUU. But this is not true at all! He is a very good professor, compassionate, knowledgeable and open minded. No exams, he picked a subject and we had to research everything we want around that and write our own. 10/10 great Professor
He expects you to know material before he has taught it. The study guides for tests are very vague and his tests are confusing. I would recommend taking from a different teacher if you can.
Dr. Karpel is not for the weak. He makes you work for your grade, which I highly respect and appreciate. I struggled with his delivery of answers; sometimes, he would almost make you feel stupid for asking a question. However, he clarifies that he wants to help, which is good. Delivery needs some work.
Going to be honest, Professor Karpel is hard! He really makes you work for your grade but if you are going to be a biology major, I 100% recommend taking this class from him. He makes sure that you actually understand the material and is so willing to help if you're lost or confused. Taking this class from him WILL PREPARE YOU for future classes!!
This was a tough class but he is always willing to help you understand. Try your best to do well on all your other tests because he drops an exam and if you do well on the other exams you won't have to take the final. go to the PAL groups that the TA holds because they are so so helpful and I wouldn't have done so well without them.
Cool class! Dr Karpel is super passionate about what he teaches and it helps keep you engaged. The class was tough but once you put some effort in, it's not too bad. Make sure you're prepared for the tests because those can make or break your overall grade in this class. He was helpful in office hours and overall a pretty funny and chill guy.
Dr. Karpel is super lecture heavy, but his lectures are very engaging. The homework is manageable as long as you stay on top of it. The exams are very difficult so make sure to take a good chunk of time to study for them. He does drop your lowest exam score so if you are already at an A then you won't have to take the final.
Professor Karpel is very knowledgeable and genuinely excited about what he teaches. He will help you if you don't understand something. There are many recourses for this class to understand the content: PAL groups, Campbell Biology, Cell concepts GRL, lecture slides, his office hours, and notes from things he writes on the board.
If you take his class be sure to never miss it. Lots of material is provided in class, and you cant get all of the information from PowerPoints. Its a lot of time to devote, but that's pretty expected. He's a fun professor and makes things funny,
He was a great professor. I felt like he gave us access to all materials necessary to succeed and as far as I know, he was available when he said he would be. He is definitely a harder course but again he gives all the necessary resources.
Absolutely loved this class. Dr. Karpel taught this class very well. There is an online textbook that have assignments due every week. He is very clear about what you need to know and what is going to be on the tests. If you enjoy biology, you will love this class. Take an hour or two a day to study and you will be fine.
Exams were pretty tough in this class. I thought Dr Karpel was a pretty good guy. Not my favorite professor but he explained most things in a way that I was able to understand. You have to do the chapter online reading and questions which aren't always relevant to the material which I disliked.
I have now had Dr. Karpel two different times. Once for Biol 1610 and now for Introductory Microbiology. Both times he has been an excellent professor. Dr. Karpel encourages critical thinking and expects you to know the material well but within reason. Attend lectures, ask questions, and do your time studying and you will do great in his class.
He knows his stuff really well and wants his students to succeed. He's a fun guy and he loves biology, but he does not like teaching this class. He can be pretty degrading. He requires much more out of you than other gen bio professors. You will know the material very well. He does drop your lowest exam. You are required to buy the textbook.
Karpel is a solid professor. He is very lecture heavy and goes into a lot of detail in his lessons, but most bio professors are. His classwork is easy to get through and the chapter reading is basically free points. His exams aren't worth that many points and he even drops your lowest exam grade at the end of the semester.
Karpel seemed like he didn't care at all about us or the course content at all. He was not helpful if I didn't understand something in the lab because he didn't even care if we did it right. He literally told me to make something up one time. He was a bad teacher because he couldn't care less... Kinda always had a bad additude.
i loved his lab! he was very funny and super chill. definitely recommend because he was great!
If you're looking for a professor that doesn't care about you here he is. Karpel does not care about you and makes you buy a glorified slideshow that he made for 90$. It's literally text and embedded YouTube videos he put together he makes you buy when it could easily be a slideshow. It has quizzes embedded for 30% of your grade.
Karpel is a really really tough professor, but I do feel like he prepared me with a full knowledge of gen Bio. If you are willing to study your life away for this class you will like Karpel.
Great engaging professor and lectures. He made biology a little easier to understand. I will say the exams are difficult. Study hard in this class.
His teaching style is difficult to follow. Nearly my whole class had to go to the study groups because they didn't quite understand his way of explaining things. I have since had harder classes but had an easier time learning other class material than I did in his class. I feel he grades fairly but exams don't always match up with what he teaches.
BE READY TO READ. Despite how much you read, it helped me solidify the material a little more. My biggest advice is to GO TO CLASS. It may take him a while to find the best teaching style to help your class, but once he finds what you need you're set! This class is not for the casual learner. It can be a lot, so be ready.
I took the class Friday afternoon, when everyone including the professor were ready to be done with the week. It's a pretty easy class where you can get away without doing every assignment (which is why I got a B+). Be sure to find a good group to do the experiments with. That's what made the class personally not enjoyable for me.
The mcgraw hill information is not on the test. He does add some questions from his cell concepts textbook on the test, just beware. The homework and participation take up so much points that you can get Bs on the exams and get a A in the class. He drops the lowest exam grade, so this class wasn't to bad at all. Create flow charts of the material.
Very easy class and tests are not waited as heavy.
This was his first time teaching introductory microbiology and it showed. Listen, the class wasn't hard, but I really did not learn anything. He used someone else's powerpoints so half the time he didn't even know how to teach from them.Everything about the class was fine, I just never felt prepared for exams because of his lackadaisical teaching.
He does not teach off of his PowerPoints very well and just expects everyone to understand without an explanation. His exams feel slightly random with the material on them compared to what he lectured on in class. As long as you go to class, and do all the assignments it's not increbidly difficult to get a good grade.
