Nice guy, clear notes, tests are kinda hard sometimes, but good class overall
great pace, online notes, ok lectures
ungodly boring, rather have my teeth pulled
In general a very irritating person. Nice enough, but after listening to thousands of nnnnn-kay 's under his breath you feel like strangling him.
Dosent explain well, worst professor Ive had yet
No Comments
ugh, he just regurgetates the bio book, but the tests are completely random. the lecture is boring and so is he...ugh...definitley the opposite of hot
He has his notes online however he is basically just repeating what is in the book. His favorite thing to say is, Know this slide , which means every other slide. Doesn't emphasize points well, you need to know EVERYTHING!!!!
Nice guy, but very boring. Tries to be animated but sometimes it doesn't work. Has a sense of humor if you find biology funny. Not that bad.
Very very HARD. Exams are so difficult to pass. Its like he expects everyone to already know everything. His lectures are greek. He doesn't really explain things well.

i thought this class was going to be easy..steer clear of this guy....i dont know how he teaches cause he is horrible...grades way too hard
Seems like a nice guy but his lectures suck. He doesn't explain anything very well, and his tests are difficult. Very harsh when it comes to grading
Has high expectations for students, but I learned a lot. Will do anything to help a student.
Being his first year here, he has sone GREAT. Not only has he alloted extra credit opportunities, he also is helpful outside of his office hours. Definitely a worth while professor to take. So intelligent.
The best 1st year professor I've had! Always helpful whenever I needed him. He is very warm and silly. If you work with, he'll work with you. Don't give up! His class is definately worth it!
Very hard class. I basically lived and breathed mamm. phys last semester and still didnt do the greatest. Quiz every week! The book helps somewhat but its just a lot of material to learn, especially for non Bio majors.
It is a hard class, but I got an A. You have to be willing to try. He is a sweet man, I liked him alot. He really does care if his class is doing well.
If you like studly teddy bears, you will love Kelty. He has some great undergrad lab assistants. They say you are what you eat, well he loves to eat nerds. If you want to get in good mention fly fishing.
thought this class would be a piece of cake... was my worst grade yet. he needs to realize it is a one hundred level course!!
I think you should realize that you are testing too hard when all of your tests need to be curved because 70% of the class failed. This guys loves to hear himself talk, expects you to know everything because he does, but was helpful when I needed it.
This is a hard class!! But it would be hard with anyone. Kelty is a fairly good teacher and tries to explain things when you don't understand
This professor is the biggest douche ever. He says neurology's impact on human functioning ends at the medulla. Bias, opinionated, completely asinine. Talks down to his class even though it's apparent he's unsuccessfully attempting to use large words.
Serious ****...he spends like two lectures on each topic which should take about five minutes a peace...this class is kinda a joke...it should be like 10 times harder than it is...but im not complaining
Kind of a doorknob. By that I mean, if you were to stereotype a physiologist/biology nerd, he would be it. His exams are pretty tough, but you learn your material pretty well. He can be nice, but anal at the same time. Makes me not enjoy physiology like I used to.
Strange lecture. Study the book; it's better organized. Tests are a total crapshoot and poorly done; half the stuff he says will be on there. Not terribly hard, but ruins physiology. Has a bit of a strange laugh/giggle.
He is really hard. Study everynight for the exams, cause they are really hard. It is almost impossible ot get an A. Classes average d's on the exams!
Not a fun class. Study hard, and mostly the book. Just read the book, because sometimes listening to him will be confusing.
Go to class. It makes everything so much easier. The textbook is really clear and concise, and I highly recommend reading it. Good on tests, if a lot of people miss a question, he just throws it out.
If you can read his mind and you are as smart as he thinks he is, you'll do great.
Okay I think some of you were too harsh. Kelty is a good teacher. He uses simple terms and good everyday explinations the exams were not that hard. go to class and read you'll have no prob he tells you what is on the test almost word for word.
He likes to talk to himself, I think.
well. he is kind of a nice guy.... but i could never concentrate in his class and the way he presented the information and in the order he did so was a little hard to follow. overall, i did not enjoy this class. i dont know if it was the class or him.
good teacher, easy tests, good review sheets if you read the text and fill out the review sheet you will be fine on the test.
Avoid this class at all costs!!! Lectures make no sense at all and are extremely indepth. Study hard and only from the book, tests are practally impossible to pass. One of the most annoying professors ever had, don't take if you can help it.
Kelty is a nice guy. He just presents his information like a guy who's too smart to teach. If you study your notes and the study guides he gives, you should do ok on your exams. But he is very partial to detail on the essay questions. But makes you learn your stuff which is probably a good thing!
Hard Exams and thinks he is funny
He is very helpful when asked. Class gets easier as it goes along. Go to class and do all the assignments and you will do fine. Assignments are easy. Exams are more difficult but if you study, you'll do fine. I'd take another course he taught. He is very fair.
The man is arrogant. Never email him, he don't respond. He spends more time complaining and going on tangents then teaching relevant material.
His exams arent too bad. However, he gives study guides that end up being forever long and not even a quarter of the stuff shows up on the exam. He is incredibly cocky and arrogant. Papers were passed back once before the drop date and since then nothin has been returned. When asked about it, he tells you to come dig through the stacks.
i didnt really enjoy this class at all. the only good thing about it was the final exam because he gave us all of the answers during the previous class. he mixed up what class he was teaching all the time and was unoranized. also, those damn clickers we had to buy were completely a waste...we only used them a few times!
He is super smart. Too smart for us. He speaks to his class like he would to collegues. I don't think he understands that this is a 151 course... not some 300 level. I take the class seriously, but I am bombing everything... especially his exams.
I'm not gonna lie, this class is very time consuming and frustrating at times. If you take this class make sure you keep up with the readings, and listen in class other wise it will be very difficult for you to pass.
This was the hardest 100-level class I have ever taken. I know most of everything from high school classes/previous bio classes, but it is still hard. He takes attendance even though its a big lecture class, by group assigments. There were 2 papers and 4 tests. He also has a optional cumulative final that replaces the lowest test score.
Alright... I didn't find this class too difficult. As long as you read the chapters you'll do fine. I thought he was a pretty good teacher as well. He tried to make the class interesting and not lecture the whole time. The only thing I didn't really like about this class was that he did take attendance and that's not too cool.
A teacher... he is not. Pure genius... but the man cannot teach worth a dang. He could probably help discover some sort of cure for some sort of whatever, but to teach us about how stuff goes on in your body is not this guy's thing. Lots of quizzes and group assignments. Lecture hall makes it hard also.
He is a little weird, and likes to laugh at his own jokes. Clas participation is mandatory, unless you want to lose a lot of in-class group points. HW's are very hard even if you spend hours on them, you have to know every detail. For exams make sure you know everything on his syllabus and how ion channels work, time needs to be spent on studying.
Kelty is an awesome prof, very smart man. Go to class or you'll lose a bunch of in-class participation points. The in class assignments and homework is a lot harder than the tests. Tests questions are taken from mostly the study objectives on the syllabus or from practice exams in the lab
he is not a good teacher point blank..very smart but not a good teacher
DON'T take him.. he thinks his rude jokes are funny and he can't look u in the eyes. HE can be insulting and doesn't teach well at all. He is confusing. I had to teach my self the whole class basically if u are up for that go for it otherwise FIND ANOTHER TEACHER!
I loved Kelty! He is very clear about what you need to know for exams and even gives a study guide. If you take the time to answer all the questions on the study guide you will be fine! I want to take him again for neurophys!
Don't believe his crap about going to class being unimportant. I tried that, and got B's or higher on all my tests but didn't go to class very often. He failed to mention the importance of in-class assignments. Go to class. Tests are easy. Study guides are useful.
Well...I would never thought I would want a teacher that is considered harder. But Kelty is so all over the place, you never know what is really going on. Sure he is easier...but there are more surprises in this class than any other class I've taken. He means well which is nice but still. Don't take him if you plan on taking the MCAT anytime soon.
Kelty is a fun guy to have teaching. Makes huge lectures more barable with videos and in-class demos. Usually willing to give generous curves to exams. Required group work gets to be annoying.
Pompous jerk. He is very smart but a horrible teacher. Has no idea how to effectively teach content. He is all over the place during lecture and doesn't post slides. He keeps class late at least twice a week. You need to be fast or an auditory learner to comprehend lecture. Fine if you have prior knowledge, if not, difficult.
Arrogant. He would rather talk about him and his ex wife than teach phys. Notes are not organized and doesnt prep for lecture-- all old classes notes. Mistakes on every quiz/exam. Exams are difficult because he doesnt cover ANY material-- teach yourself everything. Makes stupid jokes and the labs are terrible. None work! Terrible prof.
I have no interest in studying biology but I have big respect for Jon Kelty. He's a little goofy/quirky/whatever but he knows his stuff. Attendance is optional, but DON'T SKIP!!! Follow the study guides for the exams and put forth some effort, and you'll be fine. Lectures were pretty bland. Easy to work with, above decent prof, wonderful person.
Lectures are unorganized, makes lots of mistakes on tests, quizzes, and study guides. If you want a good grade in this class, you must read the book and know the concepts by heart since the tests are mostly essay and he is very picky about the essays. However, i guess he is better than scheide so either way this class sucks.
Kelty knows his stuff. His exam multiple choice questions are straight from the weekly quizzes. Sometimes he would have multiple multiple answers for a multiple choice question. He stopped doing that after a few weeks into the course. All you have to do for the exams is memorize the answers he gave you to the essays WORD for WORD. Interesting class
Hes a great guy. I learned so much in his class. Sometimes he can be a little scattered but he's human. His exams are tough but he makes you work. It's not impossible to suceed, but you do have to put work into it. If you have questions he is always willing to help. I definately recommend taking him.
The class is difficult, but not impossible. He posts PowerPoints and scribbles like crazy on the overhead. If you go to class, do the study guide, and actually study, you will be okay. The only things that bothered me are that he makes several spelling mistakes and is not always in his office during OH.
Horrible tests because he can't define terms for people who aren't physiologists. Lecture is very hard to sit through because his personality is so screwy that you just feel embarrassed for him. Pointless to study his notes because he fails at organizing them. So, prepare to teach yourself for this class.
Horrible prof! So unorganized - jumps back and forth through notes -very confusing. Does give study guides, which help, but the exams have tons of errors on them. You pretty much need to teach yourself the material.
What a lazy teacher. Does not respond to emails so don't bother! He is a nice guy, but that does not make someone a good teacher. Does not keep track of grades and is very difficult to get a hold of. He never remembers what is going on or what happened during the last class. He doesn't care if you skip because he posts everything anyway...
Not a good professor at all. I think I know more about his personal life than I do the book. He doesn't cover things that you should know so you will need to do a lot of studying to understand what is going on. He even comes out and says you will be doing everything in this class yourself.
I am a straight A student and struggled to get a B in this class. The class is boring, I was most irritated that he would post assignments on blackboard to do the evening before class (He said he would give 24 hours notice but never did). He is very knowledgeable about the subject though.
Very smart, but never organized. He puts homework assignments online sometimes the night before they are due. Take notes, memorize the book, and go to class.
Very disrespectful at some times, actually talked bad about specific majors as opposed to others...has tenure so doesn't care. I'm an A student but got a B in this class, tests are hard to understand and very wordy. Goes on tangents of stuff that has NOTHING to do with material. Just wants to act smart and wordy. DON'T TAKE WITH HIM.
As a person, great guy. Nice, honest, and straight forward. As a professor, not so great. He's very scattered and all over the place. That being said, he does give a study guide. Just answer those questions and you'll be spot on fine for his exams. I had a 97 average in the class and I never took in class notes.
Easy class, horrible professor. How did he get a PhD? I think he must be dumb because he can't clearly explain anything. Expect to get nothing out of lecture. He doesn't know how to teach anything. Get some lessons from Juris or Dunbar please!
Very very nice guy and is willing to help and be available to any student at the drop of a hat. The down side to this Professor is that he is VERY scatter-brained and doesn't provide the best examples/ways to help you learn the material. Very little need for the book- he had us use online sources. Great guy but iffy on his teaching methods.
If you have to choose between Kelty or Scheide, go with Kelty. His exams are MC, while Scheide's are fill in the blank/drawing diagrams/awful. I took it with both- wish I would have taken Kelty the first time. While his lectures can ramble, the book is good, lab is easy, and showing up for quizzes on Friday mandatory. Semi-difficult class.
Dr. Kelty was a very nice (but socially awkward) professor. Sometimes his wording on his exams/quizzes can be a little weird, but overall he was a pretty good professor. Quizzes once a week, and exams were relatively straight forward as long as you put in the time and effort. I suggest reading the book along with his notes and you should get an A.
He rambles a lot but overall is a good prof. He tries to make class interesting & really wants everyone to understand the material. His exams have a lot of mistakes but he gives extra credit! Quizzes each week were kind of difficult but with extra credit I got almost full points.
This is a tough class. The in-class homework is easy but the take-home essays were quite difficult. The way he phrases questions makes it hard to understand what he is asking.
I've never had such rude, crude insulting feedback from an instructor. Not constructive criticism, just arrogant plus he was incorrect most of the time because Kelty thinks he's an English instructor, newsflash he is poorly worded. Heed these warnings... Do Not Take Kelty as he is Not Recommended and is does not know how to properly teach.
He seems like an OK professor, hes not really bad but hes not good. His test are really hard and ask extremely specific questions. He uses power points and his lectures are pretty boring. The quizzes every week suck and are hard too. I would try to find a better professor to take it with if I was you.
Dr. Kelty is a very smart guy who is an ok professor. You are going to have to work very hard in this class. The lab is absolutely horrible, and the amount of material in the class is staggering. If you don't study, you will fail.
Kelty was OK. He is understanding and if you just go talk to him about the material he'll happily answer your questions. I recommend reading the book if you like to skip, but the quizzes every Friday sucked. Although lab was VERY interesting, it required TOO MUCH work and time to only be worth 25% of your grade. It's manageable.
He takes polls and quizzes during class, otherwise its pretty useless showing up. Reading the book is recommended, and there are pdf versions you can find online if you look hard enough. There isn't much homework that I remember. Overall fairly easy class and sufficient curving to do well, but sitting in class is like watching a bad play.
Dr. Kelty never responds to any emails, and its extremely frustrating. His questions on exams are worded extremely confusing even if you know the material. Get ready to teach yourself and a ton of work in lab.
Take him over Scheide. Go to office hours. He's a nice guy and will help. CMU, give your 392 instructors a class on how to teach before more people pay for this bs. Physiology is easy to understand and very interesting. The tests are terribly worded and lecture does not prepare you. I'm doing well and genuinely despise this class.
Kelty is a nice guy, but a terrible professor. He doesn't seem to enjoy teaching which makes it hard to pay attention. His powerpoints and lectures are useless, you should just read the book. Lab was fun, and I learned a lot, but be prepared to put in A LOT of hours on homework and studying to pass this class.
Kelty is a great guy. As long as you read the textbook and show up for class he tells you exactly what you need to know. Just regurgitate what says on the exam and quizzes you'll get an A.
Whatever you do, don't take Kelty. There is a quiz every week. His lectures are okay, but the only way you'll be prepared for the exam is to read to the textbook. The pre-lab/lab report questions he makes for the lab are ridiculous. DON'T TAKE KELTY!
I did not like Kelty the first couple weeks of class. However I slowly realized his teaching style and that he wants us to take incentive in being successful. If you do all the reading before lecture, the lectures are amazingly good supplements to the material. The book is your primary source but in a good way. It is good grad school prep.
Dr. Kelty isn't a bad professor. You have to read the textbook or you won't pass the class. Type of everything he says in lecture, it'll help when studying. He offers great review sessions before exams! I would take Kelty over the other professors!
He is a really cool guy but cannot teach to save his life. Absolutely zero course organization which was stressful and irritating as a student. Spent majority of the semester confused about what we were talking about and did my best to teach myself the material using the textbook.
For the love of God, do not take a class with him if you value your sanity. Changed the schedule constantly, had exams every two weeks, and he always went on tangents during lecture. Never has grades posted in a reasonable amount of time (like a month for homework assignments) and is just overall very unorganized and not worth taking a class with.
Dr. Kelty does an excellent job of outlining his expectations to students. His lectures reinforce the readings very well and he provides excellent study guides for the assessments. You absolutely have to read the book, but that should be expected. He genuinely wants his students to do well, and is hands down the best mam phys professor at CMU.
This class was so interesting, it's a shame that Kelty was the prof. He's so rude and pompous, and at one point told the class we should all leave because he was "tired of watching us drool on ourselves" because no one could answer his question. Test and in class questions are worded so poorly I never know what he is asking. Just take someone else.
Dr. Kelty was a decent professor. Its difficult to pay attention in lecture because he frequently goes off on tangents but if you read the book and do all of the homework you should be just fine.
Mam phys is a textbook heavy class, but more manageable with Kelty. There were 5 exams over the semester, and there was the option to take the final exam as a cumulative or not to better your grade. If you did all the online homework with a 90% average over the semester, he moved a B+ student to a A- student. Very fair professor overall.
Terrible lectures, you leave more confused than anything else. Goes on random rants about things that dont matter. Expects you to be as knowledgeable as him. Very condescending and arrogant. Impossible to study because no study guides and his slides do not have information just questions with no clear answers. Dont recommend kelty to anyone ever
If you can take this class with ANYONE else I would recommend doing so... if you cant I recommend taking it a different semester. Kelty does not provide you with the information you need to take his test. The lecture slides are more so his talking points and will be no help to you, youll end up looking everything up online & will still be unsure.
Hands down the worst professor I've had in my 4.5 years here. I was in his office hours all the time and he is absolutely no help. He specifically told me that the study guides he makes are useless and that they shouldn't be used to study for the exams (we had 7). He said the same about the book and the homework. Lectures are useless but required.
Unhelpful and gets annoyed when asked a question on material. Study guides are useless and his lectures are impossible follow. Spends more time complaining about his students being an inconvenience to spending time with his daughter than trying to make sure people understand. If you like to flounder aimlessly in a hard course kelty is your guy.
I've never had a teacher as awful as Kelty in all my years of schooling. I would describe his teaching style as confusing & unhelpful because in the long run you end up having to teach yourself. In his class I looked forward to two things; it being over & getting to fill out SOS forms. Kelty made me question myself and my major. DO NOT take kelty
Everything is in lecture, pre-lecture videos, and the book. Make sure you review difficult concepts. Everything in the lecture will most likely be on the exam. He drops low assignment scores. Also, you can talk to him about your exam grades to get partial points... You have to prove you actually know the material if you got it wrong on the exam.
Kelty is truthfully a great professor, go to class and you'll do good! He is super kind, helpful, and funny. tests are hard but he is willing to help. Lots of papers, but they're kind of fun to write and learn about. He is a bit of a tough grader but he gives good feedback to help you on future assignments!
Dr. Kelty was the worst professor I’ve ever had in the biology department at CMU. As a straight A student, I was unable to get good grades in this class despite utilizing all resources. Dr. Kelty puts information on the exams that we didn’t even discuss in class and gets angry when we don’t know something, before we even learn it.
I think Kelty is a good guy, but this class was just chaotic in the worst way. Pray that you get a good group, because group work is a huge chunk of your grade. There was at least one exam a month, so get ready to cram like never before. He also tends to change due dates, which is awful for scheduling other obligations.
Bio 392 material is hard to grasp at first, but he listens to student feedback. On exams if you got a question wrong you can review and talk about your perspective and possibly get points back. He provides supplemental lectures before lectures. The mini HW assignments are essential to studying for the exams.
Dr. Kelty seems to excel at teaching smaller classes (I had him for 392 as well, which was much larger). Overall, I enjoyed this course. It's reasonably difficult, but as long as you have the textbook and attend lectures you should be okay. I did not like the paper aspect at all - they were often confusing, but at least they were short assignments.
His lecture was dreadful. I am a bio major, and I feel like I learned nothing in his class because of the way it was set up. Daily quizzes and worksheets you basically copied off the board. I would not take him if you're actually trying to learn something and have it presented in an interesting way.
This was the most confusing, unhelpful, unorganized class. He expects you to be prepared for class with daily quizzes yet he's always a mess. By the time you get to that days content there's only 20 minutes left and he uses it to tell you to forget half the stuff he made you read and learn in the book. I walk out knowing less than I walked in with.
Lectures make no sense and always contradict the book. Also just incredibly unorganized.
He thinks he's smarter than the textbook. The only way to succeed in his class is for it to be the only class you're taking or you have nothing to do outside of class other than study. The exams are incredibly hard and very detailed.
NEVER TAKE. Every question on quizzes/exams is a gotcha, his favorite line is "well technically", the information is never presented in an understandable way. Way too much work. On SUNDAY before finals he announced that our exam was going to be 2 3hr sections without telling us. Each class requires like 2-3 hours of work. Not worth it. Lab is easy
Really down to earth and always willing to help explain or simplify material. His goal isn't to fail as many students as possible, rather quite the opposite. Lectures can be redundant and dull, but for the most part easy to take notes with and do well on tests.
AWFUL. If you have a choice, DON'T take his classes. This man thinks he is so funny, but his ego is huge. I spent HOURS each day on just the notes, videos, quizzes, etc. not including studying for his SEVEN exams. There is a lot that goes into the grade book which is nice. Prepare to read, study, work with groups, and take exams every couple weeks
This class ain't easy at all, but Kelty shows up to lecture with great notes, and provides multiple options to learn the material (reading, videos, or just the lecture). If you get a bad grade its simply cause you did not put in the correct effort. 7 exams per semester, very fair questions, all cover material covered.
He knows that the material is boring and easy to understand so he makes you come to class due to a massive amount of the grade being in class participation. Unfortunately for you all, he is the only professor who teaches this awful class. Id switch your major to Biochem or Chem to have this be the second to last terrible BIo class at CMU.
Classes are interactive learning, makes class very interesting. Any premed should take Kelty. He requires you to actually use your brain, don't think you can AI your way or cheat through any of his material. I am blowing through Biology MCAT material strictly from BIO 392/534. Phenomenal professor, just be ready to hustle.Grading is completely fair
Kelty's class is tough, with 7 exams per semester, but he provides great resources like detailed lectures and a textbook. Stay on top of the work, and unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool. Overall, worth the effort for the meaningful learning.
Show up to class because there is a quiz in every class and in in-class assignment, so if you want to do well, you have to show up. He is a good professor and knows what he is taking about. He does ramble sometimes, which is okay.
